Half a grand is a lot of money for a lot of people - and luckily it can get you a lot of bike. There's a huge range to choose from at this price, from commuting cycles to long-distance tourers, but if you're looking for something a little lighter and sportier you'll be pleased to know that for around £500 you can buy a machine that'll easily cope with distance rides such as sportives, as well as your day to day cycling, with a good dose of style thrown in.

The Trek SL1000, was a winner in Cycling Plus' 2006 budget race bikes of the year. >

Frame >The Trek frame is based on 7005 series aluminium tubing with butted main tubes and is 1,551g in the 56cm size tested. The welding is plain without any smoothing of the joins, and the paint and decals are an improvement on the previous year's model. We like the neatly executed mudguard bridge detailing between the chainstays.

The distinctive and unusual forward-sloping top-tube (it's higher at the seatpost) is an aspect of the 1000-1500 series that you'll either like or loathe, but the short head-tube enables a low riding position for time trialling that simply isn't possible on the Specialized with its taller head-tube. The handlebar height can be altered considerably by flipping the stem through 180 degrees to point upwards, and further adjustments can be effected in small increments by using the headset spacers provided. The inclusion of rack and mudguard eyes is a major plus point as far as versatility for commuting and general cycling is concerned, meaning that this frame is a good all-rounder.

> Equipment >Given that the £500 price point is largely focused on those who are just getting into their cycling, it is appropriate that Trek have specified the SL1000 with a triple chainset, because the range of gears this provides is more important than the small weight saving of a double chainset. The anatomic 'pistol grip' handlebars have a slightly deeper and lower bend than those of the Specialized, and the radically sloping stem provides a greater than average range of handlebar height settings, though it doesn't win points for style. The Shimano Sora levers work well with your hands rested on the hoods, but it's a long reach to the brake hood button levers when your hands are on the drops.

>An eight-speed Shimano cassette means the transition to a smaller gear is a noticeably bigger step than with a 10-speed system, but the testers felt that it hardly affected their ability to maintain a constant pedalling cadence on undulating roads.

> > Wheels >The Trek wheels are of the traditional variety in using 32 spokes per wheel, laced in a 3-cross pattern to strong, reputable Alex rims - each spoke is crossed by two others, between hub and rim - with unbranded but smooth-running hubs. This year's wheels are 115g heavier per pair than those of the previous year's model that were outwardly similar but used Rigida Chrina rims instead. Trek have retained the tried and trusted Bontrager Select tyres that are probably the best budget tyre we have come across for vertical compliance, and they grip tenaciously in the wet. Their slightly larger 25mm width means they are more resistant to pinch punctures than 23mm tyres, but they'll need to be changed for a 23mm tyre if mudguards are to be fitted to provide enough clearance.

> Handling

The Trek's butted tubes make for a lively performance out on the road and were it not for the weight of the components, this could easily be confused with a bike costing twice the price. There really is very little to criticise when ridden on the flat, but at a shade under 21lb its bulk, which is mainly centred on the wheels, makes it harder for the rider to change tempo on a climb. That said, the fun and lively nature of the ride makes you want to take the long way home on a warm balmy summer evening.

Though odd looking, the system of using spacers stacked to give the greatest handlebar height didn't cause our testers any worries, and the time triallists will warm to the fact that the spacers can be omitted completely to get a low, aerodynamic riding position. > > Verdict

The Trek won our budget race bike of 2006 award by virtue of its versatility and now receives a carbon seatpost, but it's 115g heavier overall because of the new wheels. Compared to the previous model year, the Specialized has seen the biggest raft of improvements which, like the Trek, include a carbon seatpost in place of an aluminium one, together with a higher spec and marginally lighter wheels. >Iit's hard to ignore the Trek's inclusion of mudguard and rack eyes. These make the it a very versatile bike, a quality that can't be overlooked if the bike is to be used year-round for different types of riding. If versatility is your bag, the Trek should be right up your street.

Trek Alpha SL Aluminum versus Carbon

I had a 1999 Trek 2300 Alpha SL that I just sold. With the right wheels and tires, there wasn't much difference in it and my carbon Cervelo RS. Those Trek alpha frames were pretty good and I weighed 220 to 230 when riding that frame. Wheels that I have found to be quite good are Mavic open pro, 32 spoke and Velocity Spartacus - the version marketed for heavier riders. The Spartacus is one wheel I would never have guessed would give a quality ride but it does. Terrible were Mavic kysrium elites. The Rolf Vectors were somewhere in-between. My current tire of choice is Vittoria rubino pro slick, 25mm. With all that said, chipseal is going to beat you to death. You can probably fit 28mm tires on that frame - if so, that would be my recommendation. I am also a firm believer in the need for at least two bikes...just in case.

The humble beginning of Trek bicycles took place in the "red barn" - once a carpet warehouse - in Waterloo, USA. The first bikes were steel touring frames , but within three years the brand had expanded substantially.

Eventually outgrowing the barn, Trek moved into a much larger headquarters - still in Waterloo - in the year 1980. From there it began to manufacture road racing bikes, then in 1983 created its first mountain bike before moving into accessories come 1984.

Having started out in steel, Trek moved into developing aluminium bikes in 1985. The first Trek branded full carbon frame came in 1989 - the Trek 5000 had a frame weight of 1.5kg. It was built by an outside manufacturer and discontinued after a year. Trek made its own efforts at carbon, with an in-house production, in 1992 to much greater success.

Now, Trek offers the Madone (aero bike), Domane (endurance bike), Emonda (lightweight race bike) and Checkpoint (gravel bike) as well as the Boone cyclocross and Speed Concept time trial machine.

Trek's carbon bikes have always used their own patented 'OCLV carbon' - this stands for Optimum Compaction Low Void. It believes this carbon creates the best compromise between low weight and high strength and stiffness.

Optimum Compaction refers to the way sheets of carbon are layered into the mould, and optimised via heat and pressure - in Trek's opinion the two treatments are administered to the perfect ratio. Low Void refers to the minimisation of space between the layers of carbon, which might otherwise reduce strength and durability.

In 1995, Trek opened an independent facility inWhitewater, Wisconsin. The idea being that the Waterloo factory would work in frame development only. For those who want to customise their ride, the'Project One' custom paint programme arrived in 2001.

Trek supported now disgraced American cyclist, Lance Armstrong, through his peak years. In 1997, it helped him sign with their sponsored team, US Postal Service Pro Cycling. He won his seven editions of the Tour de Frances on bikes bearing the brand name, but all of said wins were later taken from him following doping violations.

In 2014, the brand sponsored the Trek Factory Racing Team, now calledTrek–Segafredo. In that role, it provided bikes for high profile winners such as Fabian Cancellara and Alberto Contador,as well as Jens Voigt, and notably his Hour Record in September 2014.

In 2020, Trek continued to support the Trek-Segafredo men's and women's race outfits, two highly successful teams.

Trek's acquisitions

Over the years, Trek has made a number of high profile acquisitions. The most famous, perhaps, Gary Fisher bicycles - the mountain bike brand which it took over in 1993.

Later came Bontrager Cycles in 1995 and Electra Bicycle Company in 2014. Bontrager, now Trek's component and apparel brand, maintains the same name as does Electra, the creator of leisure bikes and accessories.

Trek's road bike models

Trek is able to offer a wide range of different bikes, each tuned to a slightly different purpose. Some model families are available in a selection of standards (SLR premium carbon, SL carbon, ALR premium aluminium and AL aluminium), and then these come with assorted levels of componentry to suit your price bracket.

To add even more depth to the range, Trek offers many models in two different 'fits'. The Madone and Émonda come as standard in an H2 (traditional) fit, but there are versions in what it calls 'H1' fit. This is more aggressive, shaving off about 30mm on the head tube to create a longer, lower ride. The Domane comes in an H2 'Endurance' fit, with a few models in 'Pro Endurance', again with a longer and lower stance on offer.

Reasons to avoid.

The Trek Domane was introduced in 2012. It was created to offer a comfortable ride, the key feature being an IsoSpeed decoupler which separated the seat tube from the top tube, thus reducing vibrations and fatigue.

In 2016 it gained theFront IsoSpeed, which helps to reduce vibrations at the front end without impacting handling. This came alongside a new slider, which alters the level of dampening offered by the rear.

In its most recent update , the Domane took notes from the Madone with an aero fork profile, whilst becoming more versatile thanks to clearance for 38mm tyres (without mudguards, 35mm with). It also gained a downtube compartment for stashing tools (or snacks!).

Though comfort is important to the Trek Domane, it's still a racing frame, and its prowess has been demonstrated by UCI WorldTour riders at major one-day Classics, such as Strade Bianche and the Tour of Flanders. The top Domane bikes come with an H1.5 fit, which was developed with the Trek-Segafredo teams to offer the optimal balance between aerodynamics and endurance.

The Trek Domane - available as a men's build or with women's specific componentry - is a fast selling model, which comes in a range of frame materials.

The Domane SLR uses the lightest carbon Trek offers, the SL is one step down, whilst the AL uses aluminium and is the cheapest of the range.

Trek Madone

The Trek Madone is quite another beast, and the bikes come built for men and women; the latter's models with women's saddles and narrower handlebars . With an aggressive geometry and stiffness to boot, it's a road race hero, and aerodynamics have become part of its lifeblood. When we tested five aero bikes , head to head, the Trek Madone came out fastest.

Modern Trek Madone's feature a high level of integration, with the cables tucked away yet reachable via an access point at the top of the down tube.Wind tunnel testing has helped Trek to create theirKVF (Kammtail Virtual Foil) tube shapes, used on the frame and fork. These unconventional tube shapes are designed to further reduce drag, helping the rider/bike unit to slice through the air efficiently.

Because being bumped around doesn't make you faster, the Madone also features an IsoSpeed decoupler at the seat tube and more recently an adjustable one at the head tube, which offers greater compliance whilst still being integrated to prevent adding drag.

The newest model, according to Trek, can offer 17 per cent more compliance through to 21 per cent more stiffness, depending upon your chosen setting. A damper at the seatpost is also said to cut rebound by 13 per cent. All of these stats add up to a bike that can be comfortable and stiff at the same time - and one that earned a place in our 2018 Editor's Choice awards.

The majority of the bikes come in a more relaxed 'H2' geometry, save for the Madone SLR, which is in an 'H1.5' fit - this is designed to allow riders to achieve an H1 fit or an H2, depending upon their set up.

Trek Émonda

Adding more depth to the Trek family is the Trek Émonda, launched in 2014. Designed to be a climbing bike, newer adaptations are capable of negotiating mixed terrains - with disc brakes available and tyre clearance to 28mm.

Trek continues to work on developing the Émonda, dropping the weight of the top end Trek Émonda SLR to 640g in a size 56cm (665g with discs) and 1091g for the Trek Émonda SL (1149g with discs). The weight difference is largely achieved by the use of700 Series OCLV carbon on the SLR, as opposed to 500 series on the SL.

The aluminium model has seen some major work and the result earned it a place in the Editor's Choice 2019 awards. The key characteristic we loved was the way it simply didn't look, or ride, like aluminium. A lot of this is down to Trek's 'Invisible Weld Technology' which increases the surface area of the frame, adding to strength and reducing weight. The ALR model's frame weight comes in at a competitive 1112g, or 1131g with discs, and it uses the brand's 300 Series Alpha Aluminium.

The carbon models are available in 'SLR' build or 'SL', the former being the lightest and the latter more affordable. The majority of Trek Émonda bikes cone in an 'H2' fit, but they can be purchased in an 'H1' geometry, if you choose the top end 'Race Shop' version.

There are a few nods to neatness and integration around, such as the use of 'Blendr Integration' which seamlessly mounts Bontrager’s cycling computer, Ionbike lights or even Garmin computers directly to the handlebars. On SLR versions there's ‘Control Freak Cable Management’ which allows for shifter and brake cables to be housed through the frame.

With gravel and adventure bikes a fast growing category, the Checkpoint is Trek's offering to fill that sector. The crucial element here is that both the SL and ALR frame options come fitted out with 35c gravel tyres, and can accommodate rubber up to 45c. They've all got internal cable routing, to ensure much stays out, whilst the higher end models use 'Control Freak' routing which is neater.

If you opt for the carbon SL model, you get vibration dampening from an IsoSpeed decoupler at the rear, too.  To provide stability and confidence on light trails as well as comfort on all-day adventures, the geometry is not as aggressive as the road bikes elsewhere in the range. Such all-day rides warrant plenty of kit, so there's mounts for racks and mounts. Similar to elsewhere in the range, there's AL, ALR and SL models.

The frames use 500 Series OCLV Carbon, boasting the KVF (Kammtail Virtual Foil) tube shapes described in the Madone, plus a carbon fork with integrated brake and stem - the key goal being cutting through the air quickly.There's space to fit Trek's SC Draft Box and SC Sped Box, largely used by triathletes carrying snacks.

Trek's got plenty of experience in the muddy realm of off-road cycling - and they've got a selection of cyclocross bikes. The Trek Boone 7 model comes with hydraulic disc brakes, a one-by crank and 12-speed cassette and they've all got Bontrager's own 33c cyclocross tyres.

The frame material is Trek's 600 series OCLV carbon, and there's front and rear IsoSpeed decouplers to help riders negotiate the mud without excess transfer of vibration. Combining the mud ready tyres, disc brakes, 'cross focused cable routing and geo into an aluminium package is the Trek Crockett family.

They key differentiation is the frame material, which is300 Series Alpha Aluminium, and there's no decoupler. However, it's still a performance bike that's ready to race.

Trek Bicycle Corporation, established in 1976 by Richard Burke and Bevil Hogg, is a prominent bicycle manufacturer headquartered in Waterloo, Wisconsin, USA. Starting in a small red barn with steel touring frames, Trek has evolved into one of the leading global bike producers, distributing in over 90 countries.

Trek has consistently led in cycling innovations. Key milestones include the 1984 debut of the bonded aluminum Trek 2000 frame, the 1992 launch of the first carbon fiber mountain bike (Trek 9800), the 1999 introduction of the first full-suspension carbon fiber mountain bike (Trek Fuel), and in 2012, the unveiling of the first full-suspension 29er carbon fiber mountain bike (Trek Superfly).

Pricing and Availability

Although Trek no longer sells this bike you can find it quite easily on second-hand websites. While researching for this review I came across around a dozen similar bikes on eBay. They ranged in price from $100 to $250.

The prices will now depend mainly on the age and condition of the parts/paint. These bikes are flexible and will accept off-brand parts if you ever want to resurrect one.

Competing Products

The Trek SL 1000 is a relatively affordable road bike designed for everyday use. It's no longer widely available but Trek kept it simple and reliable with the parts and construction.

There's a large market for bikes like this as they're perfect for adults who aren't fully into road bikes. They can be used for a trip to the shops or commuting to work.

Bought this very model new in 2005 as a new road biker. The bike shop owner (whom I knew) told me it was one of the best bikes for the money that Trek had ever produced. He was a competitive rider and was riding the same bike which said something. Seventeen years later this is still my bike albeit with multiple upgrades and replacements on the components over the years. Still terrific and I won't get another until it gives out, if it ever does. Strengths: In particular, one of the best frames Trek has ever produced.

Stock wheels weren't that great. Hard to keep true. Those were the first things I replaced.

Responsive and effective brakes. I was needing a reliable and dependable daily urban commuter and so far I am not disappointed whatsoever. Highly pleased with this bike. Make sure you wash and lube the chain, gearset, derailleur, as these bikes are older. Acoustic Ceiling Removal

Front fork could be a little more robust. Tires puncture easily by thorns.

Great bike. Mine is primarily aluminum frame with carbon seat stays and fork to help smooth out road vibrations. My bike has a triple chain ring on front to get up the mountains - combined with 105 derailleurs and Ultegra shifters. I've done several triathlons and century rides on this bike. Been a pleasure to own.

Bontrager Race Wheels Bontrager Crank (truvative gxp actually)

Stock the bike came with 105 group except the Bonty standard double crank. I bought it used for a very good price. It was in excellent condition. I've spent $400 upgrading it and find it a great riding bike, though I have limited experience. I feel like I lucked into a real sweet bike. If you have a chance to pick up a Trek 2100 used for under $700 I'd say go for it. You won't be sorry.

Nice smoothe ride. I am a reacreational rider and do not know too much about bikes or components. I knew what I was willing to spend, and went to a bike shop, test rode 5 or 6 models. The 2100 felt the best, so I bought it, and have been happy with it. Although I don't know much about bikes, I am athletic, former college b-ball player, and push it pretty hard. The 2100 responds to my demands- I won a small, local sprint triathlon with it, setting a course record (albeit the field was not too fast, I'm sure a dedicated triathlete would kick my butt).

I first owned a Cannondale Cadd3 frame with Sora Group and a Tiagra rear Derailluer as my first true road bike. I had my eye on a Trek 2100 for a while. I called around for this paticular Bike in 63CM. The Trek Store owner told me he had one and that becuase of its large size no one wanted to buy it so he sold it to me for $1200.00. It retailed for $1699.00 brand new so I new it was a bargain. The ZR9000 alluminum frame is exceptionally light. The carbon forks and the carbon mainstays pick up a lot of vibration from the road and give a nice smooth ride. With the extra money I saved I replaced everything with Ultegra group 6500 lock stock and barrel. I got rid of the triple crankset what an eye sore. I replaced the seat with a Specialized Avatar Gel racing seat feels much better. The Bike rides beautifully. The gearing changes with precise accuracy and precision. There is no chain rub or any creaking coming from the bottom bracket. The Ultegra crankset is as stiff as I have ever felt on a crank. Im 6'3" and way 240lbs and I can put some hurtin on cranksets and so far the Ultegra crankset is worth its weight in gold. Im very happy with this Bike. I would recommend this bike to a friend. Ebay is the place to order 9speed parts and for a good price. If your looking for an entry level racing bike look no further. If you can purchase this bike used and in really good shape under $800.00 I would not pass it up. Ride like the wind and have fun!

I bought this bike to upgrade from my trek 1000. My requirements were an aluminum/carbon combo, and a compact 10 speed drivetrain. I wanted a trek 2.1, but my dealer could'nt get one, but he had this leftover 2100 which was essentially the same bike, for alot less money. The bike has been a dream. I could'nt be more pleased. The only fly in the ointment was that the rear bontrager select wheel has developed some cracks in it, and my shop is working on getting me a new wheel from trek. Other than that, alot of bike for not alot of cash!

Frame, Fork & Bontrager seat post Response Ride 105 Brakes

Saddle Wheels (spokes)

This is the price performance leader. Mine came with 105 brakes with Ultegra levers and Ultegra derailleurs. The 105 brakes are Brembo beasts and pull the bike down quickly without complaint. I swapped out the Bontrager triple with a compact and love it. Off came the saddle, and on went a Douglas Carbon from Colo. Cyclist which is very comfy. I'll add Bontrager's carbon Race X Lite Blade bars for better feel and comfort. I'd also change to tougher DT Swiss wheels with Ultegra hubs but definitely keep the Bontrager Race X Lite hardcase tires. Otherwise, this has been a wonderful ride.

Salsa Las Cruces with Bontrager Race X Lite hardcase tires is my other ride and somewhat similar.

Price Components for the time

After almost a decade of not riding a road bike, almost 30 years of riding one faithfully each day I decided to walk into a bike shop and purchase my Trek 2100. I’ve been an active cyclist for several decades prior, raced in Europe two decades and upon returning to the U.S. decided to take up mountain biking with the children. I totally fell out of the road bike trends and technologies while raising a family. The Trek 2100 or ZR2100 or 9000 …whatever you wish to call it suited immediate needs to get back into the 19 – 21 mph averages in a two or three hours work out here in New England. The bike must’ve been sitting at the local bike store for some time; the carbon fiber seat post was replaced by aluminum Bontrager and there were no pedals. The brakes were Tiagras, by Shimano but I soon replaced the pads and pad holds with Jagwires front and real Dura Ace holders and pads in the rear. Braking was increased incredibly. I also tossed the seat and fitted a real vintage 1996 Flite Ti Sella. I rode this bike 6 days a week, averaged almost 4,000 miles in 6 months in rain or shine. I blew out the rear rim, Bontrager Select ripping the spokes on the cluster side straight out. Trek warranted the break and produced a replacement set of rims, Bontrager SSR’s for a grand total out of pocket $60.00. As for the control and the components, the ZR2100 has extremely good feedback on New England terrain. The bike has been over some very difficult roads with very uneven pavement resulting in velvet smooth feedback on the bars. It’s amazing what a little carbon on a bike can do to resist the vibration and disassociated noise from those steel frames decades earlier. I find the steering to be very quick. I do not advocate the radial front lacing of the rims, the sluggish and whiplash sensation of spokes un-crossed leave a heavier rider vibrating down a mountain side wondering if you’re going to shake loose on descents. Changing over the pads to Jagwires and Dura Ace helped tremendously to smooth out slow downs, especially in turns over 30 mph on descents. The frame gives very controlled feedback and if you’re lucky you’ll get the great component group. I have Shimano 105 brakes levers, Ultegra rear derailleur, 105 front derailleur and Bontrager Select rims. Am I missing something? Perhaps not, but the replacement Bontrager SSR’s that Trek awarded under warranty were barely capable of spinning from delivery. I had to completely repack the bearings both front and back, adjust the cheap cones and finally pull in a good smooth rotation without too much resistance. I had the impression that Bontrager bottom of the line was bottom of their pool. Terrible way to give a set of wheels to a customer that wouldn’t spin freely under warranty. Thank you Phil Wood Grease and a set of 14/15/17 cone wrenches. Over all, good ride.

Excellent price, great components (Ultegra rear derailleur), batman color scheme(!), carbon bits really do help smooth out rides.

Wheels really are not up to par, seat is uncomfortable for me after 20 miles (which is a personal thing)

I absolutely love this bike. It is my first road bike but I spent a good amount of time testing others before deciding on this bike. First things first, I really do love the black and gray color scheme which is lame but its true! The components have all been rock solid, after the initial cable strech adjustment the derailleurs have never missed a shift and work quickly (although sometimes a bit noisily). The bike is tremendously comfortable and after changing the seat out a 50 mile ride leaves me feeling fresh. There really is a perceptible difference between this bike with the OCLV carbon seat stay and the Scot Speedster S20 which is all aluminum. The only negative thing I have to say about the bike is about the wheels. During corners they will flex and rub against the brake calipers and that doesn't really inspire confidence. So far my top speed is 30.5 and I was nervous to go any faster on a moderately curvy road. This is the perfect bike to begin with and a few years down the road I will upgrade and I don't think I will have changed a single thing on this bike.

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.

The possibility of using furfurol for the production of ash-free high-strength active carbons with spheroidal particles as adsorbents and catalyst supports is substantiated. A single-stage process that incorporates the resinification of furfurol, the molding of a spherical product, and its hardening while allowing the process cycle time and the cost of equipment to be reduced is developed. Derivatographic, X-ray diffraction, mercury porometric, and adsorption studies of the carbonization of the molded spherical product are performed to characterize the development of the primary and porous structures of carbon residues. Ash-free active carbons with spheroidal particles, a full volume of sorbing micro- and mesopores (up to 1.50 cm 3 /g), and a uniquely high mechanical strength (its abrasion rate is three orders of magnitude lower than that of industrial active carbons) are obtained via the vapor-gas activation of a carbonized product. The obtained active carbons are superior to all known foreign and domestic analogues and are promising for the production of catalysts that operate under severe regimes, i.e., in moving and fluidized beds.
