If you're a parent traveling with teens and tweens, you'll probably want to pick a voyage on one of the big, family activity-filled cruise ships operated by Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line that sail out of Seattle each summer.

If you're looking to get away from families with young children — maybe you're a retiree looking to travel with people your own age — you'd want to check out the itineraries operated by cruise lines that cater more to couples without kids, most notably Holland America and Princess Cruises.

Here we list our top picks for the best Alaska cruises from Seattle for six different types of travelers.

Best for families: Ovation of the Seas

It isn't easy picking the best Alaska cruise out of Seattle for families. There are four world-class family-focused cruise ships in the market, each of which is a contender for the best for families title: Royal Caribbean 's Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas, and Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Bliss.

All four ships are loaded with all sorts of gee-whiz family attractions, from bumper car pavilions and skydiving simulators on the Royal Caribbean vessels to go-kart tracks and laser tag courses on the Norwegian ships.

Unlike the Royal Caribbean ships, the Norwegian ships also have epic waterslides on their top decks, which in theory, might put them over the top in any listing of the best cruise ships for families based in Seattle.

However, keep in mind that Alaska can be chilly, even at the height of summer, and rainy, too. For that reason, we discount the value of some of the family-friendly attractions on the Norwegian ships, which are open to the elements, and consider the Royal Caribbean ships the best of the bunch for Alaska cruises from Seattle.

Both of the Royal Caribbean ships sailing to Alaska from Seattle are loaded with attractions that are protected from the elements, including those bumper car pavilions and skydiving simulators. In fact, both Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas were specifically built to operate in areas of inclement weather.

Of the two ships, which are nearly identical and part of the relatively new Quantum class of vessels, we give the 4,180-passenger Ovation of the Seas the nod for best Alaska family cruise ship sailing from Seattle only because it's a couple of years newer. Newer is almost always better in the cruise world.

A cavernous indoor activity area on each of the two Quantum-class ships called the SeaPlex is home to the aforementioned bumper cars, as well as such family-friendly activities as roller skating, basketball and even trapeze lessons. The two-level complex also has upstairs nooks for playing Xbox, ping pong and foosball. It's like one big play zone for families that will keep your kids busy for hours.

Each of the ships also offers one of the most unusual attractions you'll find at sea: A glass-enclosed capsule mounted on a mechanical arm that will take you and your family soaring into the sky for bird's-eye views. It's called the North Star ride.

All the above come in addition to many of the core Royal Caribbean attractions you'll find on most of the brand's ships, including pools, rock climbing walls, casinos, spas and Broadway-style shows, plus lots of eateries and bars.

Of particular note, given Alaska's weather, is that one of the two main pool areas on each of these Quantum-class ships is enclosed.

Best for budget travelers: Eurodam

Our pick for the best Alaska cruises from Seattle for budget travelers may come as a surprise to many cruise aficionados. That's because it's not the Alaska voyages from Seattle offered by the North American cruise line best known for budget sailings — Carnival Cruise Line .

Carnival does offer cruises to Alaska from Seattle regularly with two ships: Carnival Spirit and Carnival Luminosa. However, while Carnival is the low-cost leader in many cruise destinations, that's not always the case in the market for Alaska cruises from Seattle. Often, the lowest starting prices you'll find on cruises to Alaska from Seattle, on both an absolute and per-day basis, are the cruises offered by Holland America .

For the coming year, for instance, as of this guide's posting, there were lots of Holland America sailings to Alaska from Seattle available for under $750 per person for seven nights — some as low as $429 per person for seven nights.

There were very few Carnival sailings available for under $750 per person, with most Carnival sailings starting around $800 per person or more for seven nights.

We suspect the lower starting prices for Holland America ships as compared to Carnival ships on Alaska sailings out of Seattle is because Alaska cruises from Seattle are round-trip voyages. Many Holland America fans who cruise to Alaska choose a one-way voyage to or from the state that lets them add extra days for touring in Alaska at the start or end of the voyage. Such one-way voyages only are available out of Vancouver, British Columbia.

Holland America — the longtime leader in Alaska cruises, along with its sister company Princess Cruises — is particularly known for "cruisetours" to Alaska that combine a one-way cruise to or from the state with multiple days touring Alaska by motorcoach and train.

Holland America bases two ships in Seattle for cruises to Alaska: the 2,104-passenger Eurodam and 1,964-passenger Westerdam. Starting prices for both are relatively similar, but we give the nod for the best Alaska cruises from Seattle for budget travelers to Eurodam as it's a somewhat newer vessel.

Best for luxury lovers: Norwegian Encore

No luxury-focused cruise ships sail to Alaska out of Seattle. Still, you can get a variation on a luxury cruise experience on a voyage to Alaska from Seattle on Norwegian Cruise Line 's Norwegian Encore.

Yes, the 3,998-passenger Norwegian Encore is a cruise ship that generally caters to the masses, not the luxury crowd. However, it has its own "ship-within-a-ship" luxury zone that offers a much more swanky experience for those willing to pay.

At the top front of the vessel, this private enclave, called The Haven, is home to dozens of upscale suites; a sprawling, two-deck-high pool area; a private lounge and bar; and a private restaurant. Only the deep-pocketed swells who can afford one of the suites get exclusive access to these areas.

The pool area, a true stunner, comes with comfortable padded loungers, a pool and whirlpools. Its retractable glass roof is perfect for cruises to Alaska when the weather is iffy. Guests can enjoy the deck, rain or shine.

If living large is your goal, you're not going to find anything better than this — other than with a cruise on a similar Norwegian vessel that also cruises to Alaska from Seattle. Norwegian Bliss, also based in Washington during the summer, is part of the same Norwegian Breakaway-Plus class of vessels and has a similar Haven enclave.

Why did we pick Norwegian Encore over Norwegian Bliss as the ship offering the best Alaska cruises from Seattle for luxury lovers? Built a year after Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Encore offers one big improvement for the upscale crowd as compared to Norwegian Bliss.

On Norwegian Encore, there's a much bigger version of the exclusive, extra-charge Vibe Beach Club sunning area that's on Norwegian Bliss. Home to a full-service bar, cabanas and two hot tubs, the version of the Vibe Beach Club on Norwegian Encore sprawls across both sides of the ship (instead of just one side on Norwegian Bliss) and extends upward to a partial deck above. It's just $99 or more per day to get in.

It's yet one more stylish and upscale area for cruisers looking for an upgraded experience to retreat.

Note that there is one other option for upscale Alaska cruises out of Seattle: A voyage on Oceania Cruises ' 684-passenger Regatta. While Oceania isn't considered a luxury line on the level of Silversea Cruises or Seabourn Cruise Line , it has an elegant feel. That said, given the ship's age (it dates to 1998) and limited venues, we're still in the camp that favors a Haven stay on a Norwegian ship.

Best for solo travelers: Norwegian Bliss

Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Bliss are also our top picks for ships operating the best Alaska cruises from Seattle for solo travelers. Between these two, it's a tossup, though we put Norwegian Bliss in the headline above since, well, we already gave Norwegian Encore a turn in the limelight with the best-for-luxury category.

Notably, both Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore boast large private zones for solo travelers — something you won't find on any other cruise ship sailing out of Seattle. It's a hallmark of Norwegian's newest and biggest ships.

On each of the ships, the "studio" zones, as Norwegian calls them, are made up of 82 special solo cabins and a private Studio Lounge where solos can gather for happy hours and other events. Only the studio zone on Norwegian's 2010-built Norwegian Epic is bigger.

Passengers staying in solo cabins get exclusive access to the Studio Lounge (using their keycards), meaning a maximum of 82 people will share the space.

A special zone for solo travelers is a rare concept in the cruise world, where almost all rooms for vacationers are designed for two people and sold with per-person fares that are based on two people occupying the room.

The solo cabins in the studio zones are small (measuring 100 square feet) but are superbly designed to maximize storage space (something I learned firsthand staying in one on Norwegian Epic).

Solo passengers on Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Bliss will also find a sometimes rollicking bar scene, with plenty of counter-style seating in bars that are a great place to meet other solo travelers and friendly guests. We recommend the Sugarcane Mojito Bar on Norwegian Bliss. There, the bartender will muddle your mojitos with raspberry, guava, passion fruit or even jalapeno pepper to spice things up when you're sitting with your new solo friends.

One warning if you're considering booking one of the solo cabins: They've become so popular that they often sell out far in advance and at prices that aren't much better than booking a cabin for two.

Best for multigenerational travel: Discovery Princess

Looking for the best Alaska cruise from Seattle if you're bringing three generations of your family along for the ride? We can think of nothing better than a voyage on one of the two Princess Cruises ships that sail out of the city, the 3,660-passenger Discovery Princess and 3,560-passenger Royal Princess.

Both ships are almost identical, but we give Discovery Princess the edge only because it's newer than Royal Princess. The two vessels were built in 2022 and 2013, respectively.

Princess has long been heralded as one of the best cruise lines for multigenerational travel, in part because its ships offer a little something for travelers of all ages.

Unlike the Royal Caribbean and Norwegian ships mentioned above, the two Princess ships sailing from Seattle don't have top decks heavily skewed to family fun. Instead, their top decks offer lots of quiet and relaxing pool and lounge areas where you can enjoy the experience of being at sea without much hustle and bustle.

That makes these ships more appealing to an older demographic that doesn't necessarily want to be on a vessel that's loaded to the gills with children's fun zones and the younger family travelers drawn to that. Notably, the average age of Princess passengers is around 57, and you'll usually see many couples on board in their 50s, 60s and 70s.

Still, unlike some lines that cater to an older crowd, Princess doesn't ignore the children's market. Both Discovery Princess and Royal Princess offer an extensive children's program that gets high marks from parents, with dedicated Discovery Channel-themed Camp Discovery areas where counselors supervise free activities daily for children ages 3 to 17.

When sailing to Alaska, these ships also offer other kid-friendly events, such as Puppies on Princess, when dog mushers and their newest sled dogs come on board for meet-and-greets (and photos!). In partnership with the Discovery Channel and Glacier Bay National Park, the line also adds such kid-friendly fun during Alaska sailings as a Junior Ranger Program, totem pole decorating and a "Deadliest Catch-"themed crab sorting challenge.

In addition, an onboard Klondike Festival brings added family entertainment, including gold nugget arts and crafts projects, a naturalist exhibition, harmonica music classes and North to Alaska dance performances.

In short, Princess provides an Alaska product specifically designed to appeal to a wide age range. It's the line you take if you want an affordable ship that'll appeal to your 70-year-old parents as much as your 12-year-old kid.

Best for retirees: Westerdam

The best Alaska cruises out of Seattle for retirees, in our view, are the sailings offered by Holland America on both the 1,964-passenger Westerdam and 2,104-passenger Eurodam. We give Westerdam the slight edge for reasons we will explain below.

While Holland America draws some families with younger children, the passengers on its ships skew heavily toward middle-aged and older travelers, including many retirees. If you're nearing or already have hit retirement age and prefer to travel mostly with people who are at a similar stage in life as you, you'll feel right at home on a Holland America ship.

The top decks of Holland America vessels, notably, lack many of the kid-focused attractions found on the top decks of more family-focused ships operated by the likes of Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norwegian. That often keeps families with younger kids from booking the ships.

What you will find on the top decks of both Eurodam and Westerdam are more serene sunning areas with pools and whirlpools. Depending on your travel style, that might be all you need.

Both Eurodam and Westerdam mostly sail seven-night trips to Alaska out of Seattle. However, for 2024, Westerdam has added an epic new 28-night Alaska itinerary out of Seattle that will include calls in remote areas that most cruise ships never visit. The new itinerary is one reason we give Westerdam the edge among ships when rating the best Alaska cruises out of Seattle for seniors.

It's the sort of itinerary that specifically appeals to retirees with the time (and money) to book such a long trip.

Westerdam is also a slightly smaller ship than Eurodam, and as a result, its demographics on any given sailing are more likely to skew toward a retired crowd. To the extent that families with younger kids book Holland America ships, they are more likely to book one of its larger vessels.

In addition to Eurodam and Rotterdam, two other good choices for retirees considering Alaska cruises out of Seattle are the two Princess ships that sail on such itineraries: Royal Princess and Discovery Princess. Like the Holland America ships, they aren't loaded with kid-focused attractions that draw families.

Bottom line

Nearly a dozen major cruise ships operate Alaska cruises out of Seattle during the summer months, giving cruisers plenty of choice.

Carnival cruise ships head to Seattle for 2023 season

SEATTLE — It’s almost cruise season in Seattle.

Carnival Cruise Line announced Thursday that the first of two cruise ships that will dock in Seattle for the 2023 season embarked on its voyage.

Carnival Luminosa departed on a 23-day sailing Thursday from Brisbane, Australia, to the Port of Seattle. Carnival said the ship will make several stops along the way before docking in Seattle on May 4 for the start of the 2023 Alaska season.

Carnival Luminosa’s arrival in Seattle will be the first sailing in U.S. waters since the ship joined Carnival’s fleet in November 2022.

Another ship, Carnival Spirit, is scheduled to leave Miami on Sunday for a 16-day cruise to Seattle. Carnival Cruise Line said Spirit will arrive in Seattle just before Luminosa on May 2.

Both Carnival Cruise Line’s Luminosa and Spirit will sail a four-month Alaska cruise schedule. The two Carnival ships and a third that departs from San Francisco will sail a total of 49 Alaskan cruises during the 2023 season, according to Carnival Cruise Line .

Ships from seven different cruise lines will operate along the Seattle waterfront this summer. The city will welcome the first of 288 cruise-ship sailings to Alaska on Saturday, which is about 10% more than last year.

“The industry is back and we’re looking forward to kicking off the season,” said Kelly Craighead, president and CEO of the Cruise Lines International Association .

It’s estimated around 1.4 million passengers will be getting on and off the cruise ships in Seattle between April 15 and Oct. 30.

While such a mass influx of people may, at times, cause traffic jams for locals, the economic benefit to the region is substantial.

Every ship that docks in Seattle is worth about $4 million to the local economy, which adds up to about $900 million to the region by the end of the 2023 season.

“Sixty percent of people who visit a destination on a cruise come back and stay longer for land-based destinations,” Craighead said. “That’s certainly the case in Seattle because you have great restaurants because you have great shopping, and of course the market is awesome.”

Carnival Cruise Line in Alaska: Guide & what you need to know

Carnival Cruise Line is the largest cruise line in the world, with an impressive 26 ships sailing by the end of 2023. Although they are known for their fun Caribbean itineraries, Carnival has numerous sailings to Alaska with a good selection of ports of call and excursions.

Carnival has four Spirit-class ships, which were built specifically for all-weather sailing and are well suited to the cooler climate of this northern region. No matter which Carnival ship you pick, expect the cruise line’s signature attractions and venues, including a number of family-friendly activities with their usual focus on fun. 

With 19 different itineraries to the Last Frontier, Carnival gives guests the option to choose from a variety of scenic itineraries that voyage to top-rated Alaska ports as well as spectacular scenic cruising of glacial landscapes. 

Since there are quite a few different options for a Carnival cruise to the Land of the Midnight Sun, here is a breakdown of what you need to know when picking Carnival for an unforgettable Alaska cruise vacation .

Carnival's sailings to Alaska

Carnival has four ships sailing to Alaska, including Carnival Miracle, Carnival Legend, Carnival Luminosa, and Carnival Spirit, spread across varied itineraries over the next couple of years. 

Embarkation ports include major cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco in California, as well as Seattle, which provides many convenient flight options. As all their cruises start in the United States, each sailing has one stop in Canada, in ports such as picturesque Victoria, British Colombia. 

Many of Canival’s offerings focus on 7-day cruises out of Seattle, as well as longer ones, as much as 14 days. They do not offer one-way cruises, starting or finishing in Alaska, and don’t have add-on land tours, unlike other cruise lines like Princes Cruises. However, they do have a wide range of ports as well as scenic cruising of glaciers and fjords . 

Alaska itineraries 

Many of the Carnival’s cruises sail the calmer waters of the Inside Passage, visiting ports such as Skagway , Juneau , Ketchikan , Icy Strait Point , Haines, and Sitka . They also visit Victoria and Prince Rupert in Canada. Although Victoria is quite common on Alaska sailings, Carnival has added Prince Rupert, a northern Canadian town known for its natural wildlife, fishing, and rainforest.

In addition to numerous ports of call, Carnival’s Alaska cruises provide lots of scenic cruising to spots such as Tracy Arm Fjord,  Endicott Arm Fjord, and the Hubbard Glacier . There are a few longer cruises that head up to the Hubbard Glacier, Valdez, and Seward .

Among their most unique sailings are 14-day cruises leaving from Seattle or Los Angeles. While most of their cruise itineraries focus on the Inside Passage, these sail further north across the Gulf of Alaska to Prince William Sound, with access to College Fjord and Anchorage .  

Alaska excursions

Carnival ships sailing to Alaska 

All of Carnival’s ships sailing to Alaska are part of the cruise line’s Spirit Class, built in the early 2000s. These ships are much smaller than Carnival’s mega-ships of recent times, like Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration, which are more than twice the size of Spirit Class ships. 

These “smaller" ships still welcome around 2,000 passengers, a far more intimate experience by today’s cruise ship standards but large enough to offer amenities and activities that modern cruisers love. One major perk of this class of ships is that they have retractable roofs over the pools that can be closed during cooler weather. 

These ships still offer lots of fun entertainment and activities that Carnival is famous for, like waterparks, slides, family venues, adult areas, and much more. 

Carnival Spirit 

• The namesake of this class, Carnival Spirit, was originally built in 2001 but was refurbished in 2019. It has a capacity for 2,124 guests with 930 crew. It was the first in the Spirit class of ships.
• This ship sails mainly out of Seattle on 7-day cruises, although it has a few longer ones, including a 14-day cruise that ventures to the Gulf of Alaska. 

Carnival Legend 

• Carnival Legend was launched in 2002 and last refurbished in 2014 and welcomes 2,124 passengers. This ship was recently switched to Alaska sailings and now sails exclusively out of San Francisco on 10-day cruises, a great option for those in the California region.
• Similar to other ships in this class, it has a greater number of balcony cabins than the fleet average but also has many inside cabins that are well-priced. 

Carnival Miracle

• The ship was built in 2004 and updated in 2020. It has a guest capacity of 2,124 and a crew of 934, a good ratio for service. It is currently homeporting in San Francisco and Los Angeles for the 2024 Alaska cruise season. 
• Of the Carnival fleet, Carnival Miracle offers a higher percentage of cabins with ocean views, with 64 percent of the cabins having a balcony (fleet average of 50%). A balcony view is a great asset for such a scenic tour. 

Carnival Luminosa

• Built in 2009, Carnival Luminosa moved over from Costa Cruises, a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation, that sails out of Italy. It joined Carnival in 2022, at which time it was refurbished. It is similar in design to the other Spirit-class ships, although it is about 5% bigger in gross tonnage, welcoming 2,260 guests onboard with 926 crew. It sails out of Seattle, mostly on 7-day cruises of the Inside Passage region of Alaska.

They have some of the most competitive prices in the market and lots of choices for cruisers on every budget. Their “fun” ships possess plenty of amenities and activities for adults sailing on their own or for families and multigenerational trips. Here’s what to expect on a Carnival ship: 

• A diverse selection of inclusive dining options like Guy’s Burger Joint, BlueIguana Cantina, Seaday Brunch, and Pizza Pirate, along with the standard buffet and main dining room fare. 
• Specialty dining venues such as sushi, steakhouse, and Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast .
• Extensive entertainment options such as live musical productions, comedy shows, and theme parties, including favorites like  Lip Sync Battle
• Family activities - waterparks, Twister water slides, arcades, Build-A-Bear Workshop, parades, and much more 
• Adult activities include a variety of bars, lounges, nightclubs, spas, adult-only retreats, live entertainment, karaoke, Lip Sync Battle, Comedy Club, Comedy Club Deck/ theme parties, and casinos.
• Lots of additional onboard activities like basketball, volleyball, and mini-golf, numerous pools and hot tubs 
• Variety of cabin categories with lots of balcony options for scenic viewing

What to know when picking a Carnival cruise to Alaska 

Carnival ships sailing to Alaska were designed for all-weather conditions, adding to the comfort of the guests. These smaller ships still have a good variety of onboard venues and dining options, which might be perfect for families or cruisers who love the fun vibe.  There are a couple of important points to consider when considering a Carnival cruise vacation to Alaska, as they differ from other cruise lines sailing to Alaska.

Carnival is famous for its great prices, and their cruise fare includes basic drinks like non-bottled water, lemonade, coffee, and tea, a number of complimentary dining venues, and much of the entertainment. They do not have all-inclusive packages, but rather, drinks and wi-fi are separate. So, while the cruise fares have great advertised prices, add-ons should be considered when budgeting a cruise to Alaska.

They have a good number of itineraries sailing the Inside Passage, but they don’t offer one-way cruises with land tours. However, these Inside Passage cruises can be a great introduction to Alaska cruising with a balance of fun things to do onboard in renovated ships. 

Ships like Carnival Miracle have more balconies than the fleet average, a plus for Alaska cruises. The cruise lines do not have the same suite selection that other cruise lines like Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line are known for in their vast fleets. 

Carnival's mid-sized cruise ships provide a good balance of activities to suit both kids and adults, although some are at an additional cost, such as the Seuss-themed brunch and Deal or No Deal game show. With little significant differences between the ships (beyond age), itineraries and prices may be the bigger driver when booking the ultimate Alaska cruise vacation.

Princess Cruises: 7-Day Voyage of the Glaciers with Glacier Bay

The 2024 cruise season brings Princess' 55th-anniversary sailing to The Great Land, and the line is offering more than 150 Alaska voyages between April and September. The popular Voyage of the Glaciers with Glacier Bay itinerary northbound from Vancouver to Anchorage (Whittier), Alaska , is available on dozens of dates this season on Grand Princess , Royal Princess or Sapphire Princess . The sailing includes stops in the ports of Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway, as well as scenic cruising in beautiful Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and College Fjord in Alaska. If you prefer a smaller ship, choose Grand Princess or Sapphire Princess, which hold 2,610 and 2,680 passengers (double occupancy), respectively. Meanwhile, Royal Princess accommodates 3,560 guests at double occupancy.

The Princess Cruises North to Alaska program features immersive, family-friendly opportunities to learn about the history and traditions of the 49th state. Guests can sample fresh local seafood and meet famous Alaskans such as Libby Riddles, the first woman to win the 1,100-mile Iditarod dog race. Holland America's Koningsdam will sail the line's seven-day Inside Passage itinerary more than 20 times between April and September in 2024. This round-trip voyage embarks in Vancouver and includes multiple days of scenic cruising. You'll sail through the Inside Passage for two days; through Tracy Arm Inlet, where you can disembark for a shore excursion; and through Glacier Bay, where the Junior Ranger Program is a highlight for kids. The ports of call on this itinerary are Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan in Alaska.

Koningsdam features dedicated family staterooms with beds for up to five guests, two bathrooms and extra closet space. The ship carries 2,650 guests at double occupancy and 3,194 passengers at maximum capacity. Carnival's 2024 Alaska season runs from May to September, with the 7-Day Alaska from Seattle itinerary available every month during that time. The round-trip sailing aboard Carnival Luminosa stops in Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan, Alaska, as well as Victoria, British Columbia. You'll enjoy scenic cruising in Victoria and through Tracy Arm Fjord. You'll also have one "fun day at sea" to check out the activities and entertainment on the ship, which offers a double occupancy capacity of 2,260 passengers and a maximum capacity of 2,826 passengers.

Younger sailors ages 2 to 11 can join in on ocean-themed games, songs and programming at Camp Ocean, while tweens and teens (ages 12 to 17) can participate in destination-focused activities at See the World. Celebrity's seven-night Alaska Hubbard Glacier itinerary is available on nine voyages between May and September 2024. The Celebrity Solstice (which holds 2,852 guests at double occupancy) sails round-trip from Vancouver and stops in the ports of Icy Strait Point, Juneau and Ketchikan in Alaska. You'll have two days of scenic cruising in the Inside Passage and around Hubbard Glacier. While in Icy Strait Point, book a guided nature walk excursion along the "Trail of the Bears" in the bush country of the Spasski River Valley. UnCruise Adventures: Glacier Bay Adventure Cruise

If you prefer a small-ship cruise experience without the bells and whistles of some larger vessels, UnCruise offers adventure-style cruises to Alaska on its fleet of safari- and expedition-style ships. With these intimate cruises, you and the kids (ages 8 and older) can get up close to glaciers, wildlife and Alaska's vast wilderness directly from the ship via Zodiacs and kayaks. You may even see wildlife from a short distance away along the shoreline, as UnCruise vessels are able to sail into smaller waterways that are inaccessible to larger ships.

What is the best Alaska cruise for couples? If I could only do one Alaska voyage with my spouse, I know which one I would pick: A seven-night sailing out of Juneau on one of UnCruise Adventures ‘ small ships.

I love the adventure focus of these tiny, no-frills ships, which hold fewer than 100 people and focus on getting travelers into remote parts of Southeast Alaska for hiking, kayaking, whale watching and other outdoorsy pursuits.

That said, an Alaska cruise with UnCruise (so named because its cruises are designed to not be like a typical cruise) isn’t for everyone.

If your idea of the perfect couples cruise to Alaska is being pampered at every turn (and you’re not worried about your budget), you might want to sign up instead for a sailing with an ultra-luxury line such as Silversea Cruises , Seabourn or Regent Seven Seas Cruises .

If you’re looking for an Alaska cruise for couples that won’t break the bank, I’d probably steer you to one of the Holland America ships sailing north to Alaska out of Seattle.

In short, there’s no one answer to the question of what’s the best Alaska cruise for couples. Many cruise ships and itineraries could fit the bill, depending on your vacation preferences.

Here we list our top picks for the best Alaska cruises for couples.

An off-the-beaten-path Alaska adventure with UnCruise

You’ve probably never heard of UnCruise Adventures. It’s such a tiny brand that all the customers who sail the line in a year probably wouldn’t fill a single giant Royal Caribbean ship. But if you’re a couple looking to get off the beaten path in Alaska for adventure, it’s the ship-based travel company you want to get to know.

Specializing in Alaska trips, UnCruise operates a fleet of super-tiny vessels — the biggest carries just 86 people — that are so small they can go to remote, outdoorsy parts of Southeast Alaska that no big ship could visit. We’re talking tiny bays surrounded by miles of forests where you’ll be the only ones around. Or a tiny native settlement that is home to just hundreds of people.

The main focus of UnCruise sailings in Alaska is the Great Outdoors. The company is known for trips into wilderness areas of Southeast Alaska, where passengers can enjoy hiking, kayaking and wildlife-watching. You’ll go days without seeing anyone else but the handful of people on your vessel.

On an UnCruise Adventures trip, the vessel serves as a floating adventure platform that can get you into the most remote areas in a small-group setting. The vessels carry skiffs for exploring and landings, kayaks, paddleboards and other adventure toys.

Just don’t expect anything too fancy. UnCruise vessels are comfortable but no-frills. Many were built decades ago when cruise vessels were more spartan. On most of the vessels, you’ll find a single casual dining area, a lounge that doubles as a bar and basic cabins. That’s it. What you’re paying for is where the ship can get you and the adventure of it all.

By their very nature, these are trips that mostly cater to couples. In fact, because of the adventure focus of the daily activities, the line restricts children on board to those at least 8 years old. The small vessels also do not have any family-focused attractions on board like you’d find on bigger cruise ships.

Note that UnCruise Adventures’ nine small vessels break down roughly into two categories. Ships with Wilderness in their names are more no-frills and described as expedition vessels; those with Safari in their names are higher-end and touted as boutique yachts. My favorites are the Wilderness vessels, which are less pricey, on average. But to each his own.

A luxury Alaska trip with Silversea Cruises

Couples who want the ultimate in pampering when exploring The Last Frontier — and for whom money is no object — might want to look at an Alaska cruise on one of several ultra-luxury ships that sail regularly to Alaska. They cater mostly to older couples and solo travelers and draw relatively few families, though you do sometimes find some children on board.

Silversea Cruises is the leader in this market, with two ships sailing to Alaska in any given year. For the 2023 season, the line is sending one of its newer ships, the 596-passenger Silver Muse and the older, 382-passenger Silver Whisper to Alaska. But in 2024, it’ll swap in its newest, snazziest vessel, the 728-passenger Silver Nova, for Silver Whisper. That’ll give it the most modern fleet of luxury ships in the state.

Other ultra-luxury lines that operate in Alaska are Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Seabourn and Scenic Luxury Cruises, each of which sends one vessel to the state for all or at least part of the summer season.

What all three of the Silversea ships that will sail in Alaska over the next two years have in common is that they offer large, elegant and supremely comfortable suites (and every cabin is a suite on these ships); pampering service (that fancy suite comes with its very own butler); and gourmet cuisine of the sort you find at the finer restaurants in big cities.

Among the standout dining options on board is the modern French eatery La Dame, which offers a Michelin star-style evening that showcases ingredients like France’s sublime Limousin beef, presented with a flourish. The Atlantide restaurant offers such delicacies as caviar and lobster presented beautifully and at no extra cost.

Or if you want to have caviar in bed, your butler will only be too happy to arrange it — and will deliver it with white gloves and in full tuxedo tails.

In short, think of these ships as floating Four Seasons or Ritz-Carlton hotels. They offer those sorts of lodging experiences with the pricing to match.

A low-cost sailing from Seattle with Holland America

Looking for the best cruises to Alaska for couples on a budget? My picks are the seven-night sailings to the state that Holland America offers out of Seattle.

Often, the lowest starting prices for any cruise to Alaska are these sailings, both on an absolute and per-day basis.

For the 2023 season, for instance, many Holland America sailings to Alaska from Seattle are available for under $750 per person for seven nights, as of this guide’s posting. I even found some as low as $429 per person for a weeklong cruise.

That’s even lower than the typical starting prices for Alaska voyages offered by Carnival Cruise Line , which is the low-cost leader for sailings out of most U.S. ports. When I was pricing voyages for this story, I found few Carnival sailings available for under $750 per person, with most Carnival sailings starting around $800 per person or more for seven nights.

With a history in Alaska that goes back more than 70 years, Holland America is one of the longtime leaders in cruises to the state (along with its sister brand, Princess Cruises), and its target market is couples (skewing to the older side, with lots of retirees) rather than families.

Holland America bases two ships in Seattle for cruises to Alaska: the 2,104-passenger Eurodam and 1,964-passenger Westerdam.

A land-and-sea hybrid trip with Princess Cruises

If you’re a couple looking to see more of Alaska than its coastal areas, a hybrid trip combining a cruise with a multi-day land tour to inland areas is your best bet. These “cruisetours” are a specialty of Princess Cruises, as well as its sister company Holland America.

Princess has particularly robust offerings when it comes to such trips because it operates five wilderness resorts in Alaska that it incorporates into its itineraries. The resorts are spread across such iconic inland destinations as Denali National Park and the Kenai Peninsula.

Princess also has its own fleet of buses and rail cars to take you from its ships to its resorts, with all such transportation included in its packages.

The line sells 24 cruisetour itineraries that add three to 10 nights of land touring to a seven-night cruise. The options include Denali National Park-focused “Denali Explorer” routings that include a seven-night cruise; a scenic train ride to Denali National Park; two to four nights at a Princess lodge at Denali National Park; and an additional one or two nights in Anchorage or Fairbanks, Alaska, or both. These trips range from 10 to 13 nights in total.

In addition, Princess offers longer and more far-ranging “Off the Beaten Path” routings that add nights at the remote Copper River Princess Lodge in eastern Alaska near Wrangell-St. Elias National Park or the Kenai Princess Wilderness Lodge on the Kenai Peninsula. These trips range from 13 to 15 nights in total.

Even longer “Connoisseur” cruisetours combine stays at up to five Princess lodges in multiple locations around the state and last up to 17 nights.

All cruisetours are offered in conjunction with one-way voyages between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Alaska — something that Princess offers in abundance each summer during the short Alaska cruise season.

Many of the ships that sail on such itineraries have permission to visit Glacier Bay National Park, a highlight of any Alaska trip. Princess takes more guests to Glacier Bay National Park than any other cruise line, as 74% of all its itineraries include a visit to the park.

A more in-depth Alaska escape with Viking

For couples looking for a more in-depth exploration of Alaska’s coastal areas than most lines offer, Viking may be the perfect choice. A relative newcomer to Alaska sailings, the upscale cruise brand operates longer Alaska sailings than is the norm, with every one of its Alaska departures lasting at least 10 nights.

The longer sailings allow for calls in a broader mix of coastal Alaska towns than you’ll find on the seven-night itineraries that are more typical for cruises to Alaska. In addition to stops at classic Southeast Alaska cruise destinations such as Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan, Viking’s 10-night Alaska itineraries include a visit to Valdez, Alaska — a less touristy coastal town known for its fishing boat fleet that’s home to fewer than 4,000 people — and a cruise into little-visited Yakutat Bay.

Most Viking sailings to Alaska also begin or end with an overnight call in Anchorage, which is too far north for ships on seven-night Alaska itineraries from Seattle and Vancouver to reach. Passengers can visit attractions in and around the city that they couldn’t see on the sailings offered by almost every other line.

Viking, notably, offers included-in-the-fare tours in every one of these ports, allowing every passenger on board to get a guided experience during stops without paying extra. (Generally, Viking voyages are highly inclusive, keeping with its “no nickel-and-diming” philosophy.)

On board, Viking’s programming revolves heavily around what the line calls “cultural enrichment” — lectures by experts on topics related to the places its ships visit (in this case, Alaska), as well as cultural and culinary offerings that often have a local tie-in.

Indeed, Viking is known for catering specifically to a certain type of thoughtful, inquisitive, generally older traveler who is as interested in learning while on vacation as being pampered. Agewise, its sweet spot is travelers (mostly couples) who range from 55 to 75 years in age. So, if you’re on the younger side, this might not be the perfect couples cruise for you.

What Viking ships don’t offer is a lot of onboard amusements aimed at families and younger travelers. In fact, the line doesn’t even allow children under the age of 18 on its ships. It’s one of the only major cruise brands in the world with such a rule. That makes it by definition a cruise line for couples as well as some solo travelers.

For 2023 and 2024, Viking will base one ship in Alaska during the summer (the 930-passenger Viking Orion), but it’ll expand in 2025 with a second vessel (the 930-passenger Viking Sea). In addition to 10-night sailings to Alaska, the ships occasionally offer longer, 22-night sailings that extend beyond Alaska all the way to Japan.

Bottom line

More than a dozen major cruise lines operate Alaska cruises during the spring, summer and fall, giving couples wanting to explore the state on a cruise a wide range of choices.

What is the best Alaska cruise for couples? There is no one right answer. It’s defined by your personal interests and travel style, with the best Alaska cruise for you and your companion depending on how much adventure you prefer on a vacation, how much luxury you require, your budget and more.

Alaska Cruise Port Will Enforce Passenger Limits Starting in 2026

During Juneau’s last cruising season, a record-breaking 1.6 million cruise ship passengers visited the Alaskan capital.

But how will the introduction of cruise passenger limits affect its ability to welcome guests?

According to Juneau Tourism Manager Alix Pierce, there are no hard numbers yet. However, Pierce is optimistic since cruise lines have already committed to a conceptual agreement that places a cap on the number of daily passengers. 

She added that once the agreement is finalized and approved, it will be implemented in 2026. 

Aside from reducing the number of cruise ship passengers, Pierce shared that local officials are trying to make Saturday the least congested day of the week for Juneau.

Local authorities are also using the negotiations to discuss issues the city has been experiencing regarding congestion and hot berthing (when a cruise ship leaves and is replaced by another on the same day).

Alaska’s other attempts to regulate the cruise industry

Last year, Juneau succeeded in introducing a 5-per-day limit on large cruise ships . In February 2024, the city announced that it was able to radically reduce cruise ship trash from 2019 to 2023 by 92%. 

However, not all of Alaska’s attempts to regulate the cruise industry have flourished. In 2023, a resident also tried to impose a limit on the number of cruise guests that Sitka could host. From 560,000 cruise ship visitors, it proposed to introduce a cap of only 240,000 passengers per cruising season. The proposal was rejected by the city last October.

Juneau made a similar move to significantly regulate cruise ship passengers in 2021, but it failed because it wasn’t able to gather enough signatures.

According to a 2023 Economic Impact report , Juneau received over $22 million in revenues associated with cruise ships in 2023.

Cruise season 2024 opens in Seattle

Saturday kicks off the long-awaited summer cruise season in Seattle.

“We’re going to Alaska!” shouted one passenger.

Passengers were eager to be on their way. For some, it was the trip of a lifetime.

“We’re really excited—beyond excited,” says Tina. She and her husband have been planning their first cruise for more than a year.

Even those without a ticket say they’re excited, too.

“Right now it’s especially important as we work to get more feet on the street in Seattle,” says Howard Wright with Seattle Hospitality Group. He says cruises bring thousands of people and pocketbooks to the region.

“Restaurants, stores, the vendors- they will all see upticks in their business, in their customer counts, effective today through the end of October,” says Wright.

Local business owner Dave Riddile, agrees. “Not only do we have the benefit of more tourists down here, we also have the benefit of workers who work at the port there come in and get lunch. We have a few of them that are regulars from last season that we haven’t seen all winter. So they’ll be back soon and we’re excited for that too.” He is the co-owner of ‘Here Today Brewery and Kitchen.’

But not everyone was on board with today’s kickoff.

“The labor exploitation is appalling. The damage to the climate is massive. The dumping of the 4 billion gallons of water pollution each year is massive,” says activist Stacy Oaks.

The group ‘Seattle Cruise Control’ organized a protest outside Pier 66, demanding that the port re-evaluate the toll a thriving cruise season takes on the Puget Sound.

Meanwhile, the Port of Seattle expects 800,000 passengers to take advantage of the 2024 season. It will be their longest cruise season on record, starting earlier and ending later than ever before. The Port of Seattle projects an economic impact of nearly $900 million to the region.
