Jaxport, carnival cruise agree to extend cruise service from jacksonville.

April 15, 2024

carnival cruise from jacksonville to mexico

The Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT) and Carnival Cruise Line have reached an agreement to continue Carnival cruise service from Jacksonville into 2026, with options to extend through 2030.

The 2,697-passenger Carnival Elation will continue offering year-round sailing to The Bahamas from JAXPORT’s North Jacksonville Cruise Terminal. The new contract extends cruise service from Jacksonville for two more years and includes four one-year renewal options.

“The continued growth of our cruise program is another way we create jobs and economic impact for our region and state,” said JAXPORT CEO Eric Green . “JAXPORT has a longstanding partnership with Carnival, and we are grateful for their commitment to serving Jacksonville and providing even more reasons for tourists to visit our great city.”

More than 3 million passengers have sailed from Jacksonville during 20 years of Carnival cruise service at JAXPORT. The port has completed a series of upgrades to the cruise terminal to enhance the passenger experience, including a new parking area with easier access to the terminal, an upgraded VIP Lounge, and an improved boarding platform allowing passengers to enter the ship on the Promenade level.

The cruise industry in Jacksonville supports nearly 800 jobs and more than $187 million in annual economic impact for Northeast Florida.

‘i just wanted to get off the ship’: jacksonville passengers fall ill after cruise to bahamas.

Aleesia Hatcher , Multimedia Journalist

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Carnival cruise that sailed off from Jacksonville’s port on a five-day trip to the Bahamas turned into a nightmare for a lot of people as they became ill on the first night.

MORE: Additional cruise line may be coming to Jacksonville soon, JaxPort CEO says

Patrick Welsh was on the cruise with his wife when he heard the captain on the loudspeaker announcing the discovery of the illness.

“He said that there’s a large portion of the passengers and crew that has what they believed to be the norovirus,” Welsh said. “We noticed a lot of people were missing and then we weren’t feeling very good.”

Welsh also said they mentioned food poisoning so he avoided the buffet bars.

“It didn’t matter what you were eating on there. It wasn’t safe,” Welsh said.

Welsh’s family and other passengers getting sick caused a lot of things to get canceled.

“I just wanted to get off the ship,” Welsh said. “We were looking forward to this for nine or 10 months, and we were all excited. Now we’ve got people they’re like, ‘Oh, no way.’”

He encouraged people planning on taking a cruise to carry their own hand sanitizer, and medicine, and to wear a mask in crowded areas.

Welsh said everyone he was with either has the flu or covid and they are currently recovering.

Carnival Cruise Line will continue sailing from Jacksonville into 2026 after deal with JAXPORT

C arnival Cruise Line and JAXPORT have reached a new contract to continue Carnival's cruise service from Jacksonville into 2026, a news release shared with First Coast News on Monday states.

The 2,697-passenger Carnival Elation will continue offering year-round trips to the Bahamas from JAXPORT's North Jacksonville Cruise Terminal, the release states, as the new contract also comes with four one-year renewal options.

"The continued growth of our cruise program is another way we create jobs and [an] economic impact for our region and state," JAXPORT CEO Eric Green said in the release. "JAXPORT has a longstanding partnership with Carnival, and we are grateful for their commitment to serving Jacksonville and providing even more reasons for tourists to visit our great city."

More than 3 million passengers have sailed from Jacksonville throughout the 20 years Carnival has been at JAXPORT, the release states.

The port has completed a series of upgrades to the cruise terminal to enhance the passenger experience, including a new parking area with easier access to the terminal, an upgraded VIP Lounge and an improved boarding platform allowing passengers to enter the ship on the Promenade level.

The cruise industry in Jacksonville supports nearly 800 jobs and more than $187 million in annual economic impact for Northeast Florida.

What is sargassum and will blobs be on Florida beaches in 2024?

carnival cruise from jacksonville to mexico

While it's finally the time of year of spontaneous and relaxing beach trips for Floridians, it's also the time of year when heavy blankets of smelly seaweed coats our coasts.

Sargassum, a naturally occurring type of macroalgae, is predicted to head to our shorelines in the coming weeks, according to the University of South Florida .

What is sargassum?

According to Ocean Explorer , sargassum seaweed is a brown macroalgae that is made up of many leafy appendages, branches, and round, berry-like structures. It can be found floating on the ocean surface and consists primarily of two species, S. natans and S. fluitans.

"Floating clumps, patches, large rafts, and weedlines of sargassum can be found in the upper parts of the water column. Sometimes these rafts can stretch for miles across the ocean," the description notes. "This floating habitat can provide food, refuge, and breeding grounds for an array of animals such as fishes, sea turtles, marine birds, crabs, shrimp, and more."

Sargassum season hits its peak from April to August, during the warm months.

Look back at the sargassum blob in 2023

Many might remember headlines this time a year ago about the 5,000-mile swath of sargassum along Florida's beaches. It weighed in at an estimated 13 million tons.

Past USA Today reports said the algal blooms are linked to human activities , such as lawn fertilizers, wastewater and agricultural runoff, that increasingly send pollutants into rivers, lakes and oceans.

In addition to the unsightly piles of seaweed along the coast, some species produced toxins that affected the food chain and depleted the oxygen in the water when they started to decay, causing fish kills and the die-off of other marine species.

Is sargassum harmful to humans?

In the water, sargassum is considered harmless to people.

On land, sargassum begins to rot and produces  hydrogen sulfide and ammonia , which smells similar to rotten eggs. It can irritate eyes, ears, and noses. People with asthma or other breathing illnesses may have trouble breathing if they inhale too much of it. In open areas like beaches, however, moving air usually dilutes the gas to non-harmful levels.

The seaweed can also host tiny sea creatures that can cause skin rashes and blisters, according to the Florida Department of Health.

Can you swim in water with sargassum?

If you don't have any open wounds, you should be OK to swim in waters with sargassum. However, it is still recommended by FDOH to avoid touching or swimming near it.

Will there be seaweed on Florida beaches for summer 2024?

The  University of South Florida  monitors, researches and forecasts sargassum blooms to eventually be able to predict when it might pile up on beaches.

In their latest report on April , experts said there is an average abundance of sargassum expected to increase to a total of 9 million metric tons in the Atlantic. They expect continued growth over the next few months as the primary sargassum bloom in the interior Central Atlantic continues to expand.

The swath of seaweed reached a record size in December,  coming to an estimated 5 million metric tons compared to a long-term December average of about 2 million metric tons.

Florida Algal Bloom Map: Last 90 Days

Will there be red tide in Florida during summer?

Karenia brevis is a naturally occurring, single-celled organism belonging to a group of algae called dinoflagellates. Large concentrations can discolor water from red to brown, causing blooms to be called "red tides."

According to USA Today's database,  red tide has not been detected in Florida  as of April 15.

Solar eclipse live: Watch live coverage from path of totality

carnival cruise from jacksonville to mexico

[See eclipse livestream below]

On Monday, millions of people across the United States will get to see a rare total solar eclipse , the first in the U.S. since 2017 and the last until 2044.

And millions of others who aren't in the path of totality will see a partial solar eclipse .

Depending on where you are will determine how much of the sun will be covered by the moon. Those along the path of totality — which stretches from northern Mexico into Texas, the Midwest and East Coast and, finally, southeast Canada before moving out to sea, according to  NASA — will see a total solar eclipse, in which the moon appears the same size as the sun and blocks the entire disk, leading to a period of darkness lasting several minutes.

In Jacksonville and across Northeast Florida, about 62% of the sun will be obscured.

What time does the eclipse start in Jacksonville?

In Jacksonville, the eclipse will begin at 1:47 p.m. and continue to 4:19 p.m. At its peak at 3:05 p.m., about 64% of the sun will be obscured by the moon. ( Search eclipse times by ZIP code .)

Solar eclipse live: Watch a livestream from the path of totality

So if you want to experience the total solar eclipse from the path of totality, you'll want to follow USA TODAY's livestream of the eclipse as it moves across the country.

When will the next solar eclipse happen?

A solar eclipse is a rare phenomenon: it won't happen again in the U.S. again for another 20 years, on Aug. 23, 2044. Even then, its path of totality will stretch across Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota — hundreds of miles northwest from Monday’s eclipse path.

So grab your eclipse glasses and head outside to view it. And view the live stream to see what really makes a solar eclipse so special.

1 dead, several injured in Honolulu after shuttle bus crashes outside cruise terminal

carnival cruise from jacksonville to mexico

One person has died and multiple people were injured in a shuttle bus crash in Honolulu , Hawaii on Friday.

"Nine Carnival Miracle guests were hit by a shuttle bus in the transportation area outside the Honolulu cruise terminal on Friday morning," Matt Lupoli, senior manager of the Carnival Cruise Line , told USA TODAY. "Sadly, one guest has died from her injuries. She was traveling with her husband, who was also injured and is expected to recover."

The shuttle bus crashed into pedestrians and two concrete barriers at the terminal. The shuttle bus driver mistakenly stepped on the gas pedal instead of the break when they attempted to stop the bus from moving, Hawaii News Now reported.

All of the victims were taken to local hospitals and are being treated for their injuries. The victims are in different conditions ranging from serious to stable, the news outlet said.

"Members of the Carnival Care Team are assisting the guests. Our thoughts are with the guests affected and their loved ones," Lupoli said.

USA TODAY has reached out to the  Honolulu Police Department and the Honolulu Emergency Medical Services for comment.

1 dead, 13 injured: After man crashes truck into Texas Department of Public Safety building

Eyewitnesses share their experience after the Honolulu shuttle bus crash, reports state

Eyewitness told KITV Island News that the relaxing Friday morning turned deadly after the shuttle bus crash.

"We heard the tire of a vehicle screeching," Lillian Le, a visitor from Denver told the broadcast station. "We looked and it was a bus running over people and hit against a wall."

An employee at the complex said he has never experienced this before.

"We saw the first responders coming, it was substantial, probably about 10 a.m., four or five ambulances, two fire trucks, ten cop cars, looked pretty bad - it's really distressing," Mark Elwell, an employee at the complex wher the accident occurred. "I've worked here 21 years, I've never seen anything to this magnitude, really sad to see, obviously people were hurt pretty bad to be taken away by ambulance."

Jessica Lani Rich, a visitor at the Aloha Society of Hawaii told KITV Island News that the woman who died was celebrating her 46th wedding anniversary with her husband.
