If you’re planning a Bermuda cruise, you’re in luck! Bermuda is an island with a rich history, friendly people and genuine pink sand beaches!

After cruising to Bermuda several times, I’ve put together a list of the very best things to do in Bermuda on a cruise. Whether you are looking for family-friendly activities, Bermuda beach excursions or something off the beaten path, these must-see Bermuda attractions won’t disappoint!

In this guide, I’ve included some useful Bermuda tips and information you need to know about this popular cruise destination, including how to get around and explore on your own.

Why Cruise to Bermuda?

The island of Bermuda has become a popular cruise destination for numerous reasons. A self governing British Overseas Territory, Bermuda has a comfortable sub-tropical climate. A misconception is that Bermuda is located in the Caribbean. However, Bermuda’s location is just 700 miles away from North Carolina, in the Atlantic ocean.

Convenient North-East Departures

Bermuda cruises have North East departures leaving from New York, New Jersey, Boston and Baltimore. This is a convenient for many Americans and Canadians who like to drive to their port or have a short flight.

Overnights in Bermuda

Many cruises to Bermuda offer overnight stays (2-3 days in Bermuda), allowing time for excursions to pink sand beaches, world renowned golf courses, and a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Options for Cruise Lines and Cruise Ships

There are many cruise ships that sail to Bermuda, from large cruise ships that dock in Royal Naval Dockyard, to smaller ships that may dock in Hamilton or St. George.

Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line and Carnival all have regular cruises to Bermuda. Luxury lines like Viking Cruises and Regent Seven Seas have some sailings that include Bermuda as well.

Where Do Cruise Ships Dock?

Most cruise ships dock in King’s Wharf or Heritage Wharf, also known as the Royal Naval Dockyard , or just Dockyard. This cruise port is great spot, within walking distance to the National Museum of Bermuda, Snorkel Park Beach and the Bermuda Craft Market.

Getting Around in Bermuda

King’s Wharf is a short walk to public transportation options. A shuttle or the local bus will take you to the beautiful pink beaches on the south shore of the island. The ferries are the best way to get to Hamilton Parish and St. George, where you’ll find many attractions and natural wonders.

You can purchase 1-3 day passes for the bus and ferry at the visitor’s center in Dockyard, steps away from your cruise ship.

Suggestions for Cruisers When Planning Your Bermuda itinerary

Remember that your ship will be docked at the cruise port for a night or two, depending on your itinerary. It’s a good idea to plan excursions that will be further from the cruise ship on day 1 and day 2. Then save the last day for activities that are close to the ship in the Royal Navy Dockyard .

Top Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise

Here are a few popular must-see Bermuda attractions. Please tailor this Bermuda cruise guide to your interests and pick a few attractions to focus on. If you love Bermuda, simply plan another cruise to return!

1. Horseshoe Bay Beach

Arguably the most famous beach in Bermuda, Horseshoe Bay Beach is about a 15 minute drive from the Royal Naval Dockyard cruise port. You’ll see long stretches of blush pink sand and striking rock formations, jutting out from the turquoise waters close by the shoreline.

You can get there by taking public transportation or a shuttle right from the cruise port. At about 7$ a person from port right down to the beach, the shuttle is very convenient. While there are other beaches nearby, including Warwick and Church Bay which you may also want to visit, you simply must see Horseshoe Bay!

Do not let the crowds scare you off – walk all the way past the crowds to the left. Continue past the first couple rock formations and it is Heaven!

2. Baby Beach

If you have young children check out Baby Beach immediately to the right. The rock formations insulate the cove area from rougher seas at the main beach and provide for great viewing of many fish and crabs!

3. Rum Bum Beach Bar and Beach House Restaurant

While you’re at Horseshoe Bay Beach, you can grab a bite to eat at the on-site take out restaurant along with a pretty good Rum Swizzle from the Beach Bar. While not inexpensive at about 10$ a drink, they’re quite good!

4. Tobacco Bay Beach

Located in St. George’s parish, Tobacco Bay Beach is considered to be one of the best Bermuda Beaches for snorkeling. While Tobacco Bay is known for it’s shallow and clear waters, perfect for seeing marine life, how Tobacco Beach got it’s name is interesting part of Bermuda’s history.

In the early 1600’s, a group of Castaways whose ship wrecked upon the reefs explored the island of Bermuda and it’s beautiful beaches. At this beach, they found wild tobacco growing. Hence, Tobacco Bay Beach was named .

Now don’t go looking for tobacco on your Bermuda cruise. There’s none to be found hundreds of years later, but the name “Tobacco Bay Beach” remains.

5. Hamilton City

Just a ferry ride away from Royal Navy Dockyard is Hamilton, the capital city of Bermuda. This truly is a beautiful small city to explore. If you enjoy history, consider spending a day in Hamilton to see the sights.

As you arrive in Hamilton, you’ll see Front Street, the main street lined with colorful pastel buildings facing the harbour. Hamilton is a great place to shop for jewelry, clothing, crafts made by local artisans, souvenirs and rum.

Tip:  There’s a department store called Marks & Spencers in walking distance from Hamilton Harbour.  It has a section in the back with delicious food imported from the UK. We buy some shortbread and jam cookies and striped mint candies called Humbugs. We bring them back as souvenirs for friends and family back home.

6. City of Hamilton Walking Tour

Spend a couple of hours walking around the city of Hamilton on a self-guided walking tour or take a tour with the local town crier. Start on Front Street, then explore up and down Queen Street, Cedar Avenue and Church Street.

Some interesting sights to see include government buildings such as the Cabinet Building, the Sessions House and the impressive City Hall. An interesting fact about Bermuda’s rich history, is that Bermuda’s parliament is the oldest in the British commonwealth.

If you enjoy museums and art, make sure to stop in at the Bermuda National Gallery.

7. Cathedral of the Holy Trinity

In the parish of Hamilton, you’ll also find some of Bermuda’s oldest historic churches. In particular, the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity is worth a visit. On weekdays it’s open to guests who wish to climb the tower, where you experience incredible views of Hamilton city.

8. Hamilton Harbour Nights

If your cruise ship will be in Bermuda on a Wednesday, you should plan on going to Hamilton’s Harbour Nights Festival. Hamilton Harbour Nights is a fun evening street fair with local vendors of handicrafts and delicious street food.

There are performers and a parade. You will also get to see a parade of local Gombey Dancers in traditional costumes. This is truly one of my all-time favorite Bermuda attractions. You won’t find this anywhere else!

How to get to Hamilton from the cruise port (Dockyard)

You simply take the 25 minute ferry ride from the ship dock to Hamilton. I suggest going a bit early as the ferry line does get long and it will be crowded. The ferry is 5$ per person each way, however depending on what you are planning during your visit to Bermuda, it may be worth buying a multi day pass for the ferry and bus.

If you head into town a couple hours before, you can visit some of the Government buildings and beautiful churches and perhaps do a bit of shopping. You can also check out some of the popular local restaurants and people watch.

9. Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo (BAMZ)

If you are looking for things to do in Bermuda with kids, this Aquarium, Zoo and Museum is a favorite for families. The super large aquarium is the main attraction, and is a living replica of Bermuda’s coral reef – so you’ll see a wide variety of Bermuda marine life here. You’ll see outdoor pools with seals and turtles as well.

Once you see the aquarium, visit the small zoo and interesting museum. Do check their website for opening hours and tour times.

10. Crystal Caves and Fantasy Caves

In the parish of Hamilton, you will find the famous natural beauty of the Crystal Caves. This unique cave, home to underground shimmering stalactites set over a clear ocean fed lake is a sight you won’t soon forget!

You’ll be intrigued to know that Mark Twain himself was the first tourist to visit!

11. The Swizzle Inn

This well known pub and restaurant is home to the famous Rum Swizzle. If you’re planning a day, consider coming here for a casual lunch or dinner after visiting Crystal Caves or another sight. Consider getting a pitcher or original rum swizzles and sharing.

The Swizzle Inn is located across the street from Crystal Caves.

12. Bermuda’s National Drink – the Rum Swizzle

Bermuda is known for 2 drinks, the Rum Swizzle and the Dark and Stormy, both made with Goslings Rum. I’ve had both, but the Rum Swizzle is one of my all time favorites. I now even make a version of this drink at home!

You’ll find Rum Swizzles at quite a few bars and restaurants in Bermuda, however the original is at the Swizzle Inn.

13. Gibb’s Lighthouse

Located about 30 minutes away from the cruise port, accessible by bus or taxi, Gibb’s Lighthouse is a phenomenal spot to get a great bird’s eye view of western Bermuda and the cruise ship port.

There’s even a restaurant where you can enjoy afternoon tea. If you are a lover of Maritime History and British history, be sure to put this on your list of things to do while in Bermuda.

14. Parish of St. George Historical Reenactment

St. George is about 45 minutes away from  by ferry. It is a truly gorgeous ride, so well worth the trip!

St. George is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and this is a good place to do a walking tour. You’ll find historical landmarks and museums, including the T ucker House Museum, The Unfinished Church and Fort-St. Catherine. 

What is the Must-Do ?

This town is quaint and slow paced and has some interesting sites to see, plus one of the quirkiest things you will see anywhere! The Ducking Stool in the town center, King’s Square.

St. George has 18th century historical re-enactments in King’s Square which include a Town Crier and “The Dunking of the Nagging Wench”.

Now, I bring my sense of humor when I travel and we just thought this was totally different.

Local actors participate and school children come watch. They just really have a fun time and involve the “audience” in the show. It is usually on Thursday’s at 12:30, however please check for the current schedule .

Things to do near the cruise ship in Bermuda – Royal Naval Dockyard/King’s Wharf

The Dockyard area near the cruise ship has quite a lot to do and see, however do plan your Bermuda itinerary carefully.

It may surprise you to know that even with 2 and 3 days in port, every year there are cruise passengers who miss the ship , as don’t return to the ship on time.

As a suggestion, use your first day or two to visit places further from the port and do excursions on your own. Your last day and evenings could be spent closer to the ship in the dockyard area.

Just note that the last day in Bermuda is always busier around the cruise port/Dockyard area.

15. Royal Naval Dockyard

The Royal Naval Dockyard has quite a few activities to do and places to visit, all within a short distance of your cruise ship. It’s well worth exploring and taking time to visit this part of Bermuda.

There’s even a free trolley if your feet are just a little tired from exploring Bermuda’s beaches and other attractions. You’ll find really pretty shops with Bermuda crafts and souvenirs, well as some nice, casual restaurants and pubs. There are museums, a beach area and several types of activities!

16. Snorkel Park Beach

This man-made beach is literally a 5 minute walk from the cruise ship dock. It’s a very calm small beach to visit if you have young children as well as if you’re looking for a beach day on the last day of your cruise. At 5$ to enter, its a great deal for nice, fun beach day.

They have snorkel gear that you can rent, or you can bring your own. Kayaks and other water sports equipment is available for rent.

17. Dolphin Quest

Right next to Snorkel Park, you’ll find Dolphin Quest. If you or your children have dreamed of swimming with dolphins and learning about them, this is offered within walking distance of the ship. Booking ahead is suggested.

18. National Museum of Bermuda

If you or your children enjoy learning about Bermuda’s History as well as seeing artifacts from sunken treasures, this is a great way to spend a few hours. There is also a play area for young children. The museum located in the Keep, Royal Naval Dockyard is free for children 16 and under and does have a charge for adults. Check their website for opening hours and rates.

19. Clock-tower Mall and Local Shops in Dockyard

The Clock-tower Mall, which is visible in many of the the pictures you’ll see of the Bermuda Cruise Port, is filled with small local shops. If you want to bring back some Bermuda perfume, some artist’s paintings or prints, handmade jewelry and other crafts, this is the place to find it.

Other shops in Dockyard include a rum cake shop and the glass blowing shop where they demonstrate their work. Some great clothing stores feature nautical themed clothing and made in Bermuda jewelry, candles and other collectibles.

20. Bermuda Treats to Eat or Take Home

My favorite souvenirs to bring home usually include some local treats. You can find some good options right in dockyard, close to your cruise ship.

21. Bermudas’s Moongate in Dockyard

Bermuda has several Moongates located around the island. Lucky for us cruisers, there is one right in Dockyard fairly close to the cruise ships.

Legend has it that if couples walk through the Moongate together, they’ll be blessed with a long and happy life together.

My husband and I first walked through this Moongate in 2008 during our first visit to Bermuda by cruise. Since then we’ve gone through it each and every time we’ve returned.

I’ve come to realize that this Moongate is part of many people’s Bermuda stories, from anniversaries, to engagements to just being together and stopping for a moment to create a vacation memory.

Bermuda Shore Excursions

It’s been said that Bermuda is best seen from the water. There are some great excursions including catamaran snorkeling , wave runners, glass bottom boats and more.

While you certainly don’t have to book and excursion, as there is plenty to do and see on your own, there is value to a local excursion. You can book these with your cruise ship, or directly with a local tour operator.

It can be a good idea to book online before you go as excursions are popular and can sell out.

22. Snorkeling and Boat Excursions

I quite like catamaran and boat excursions as for me it is the right amount of “organization”, local information from the tour operator or guide, and activity to make it an enjoyable part of our visit.

The last couple of years we’ve had great excursions with Rising Son Tours. We’ve appreciated the gorgeous catamarans, friendly and informative crew, and rum swizzles of course!

We were provided with noodles, paddle-boards and had an overall great time floating in the crystal clear waters.

If you’re not fond of getting into the water, consider a romantic Champagne Catamaran excursion at sunset or a boat tour of some of the beautiful and famous homes of Bermuda.

23. Port Royal Golf Course

Bermuda has some of the most beautiful and highly rated golf courses in the world, so if you are a golfer, put this on your wish list. Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton is the closest golf course to the ship and is easily accessible by bus or cab. Golf clubs, shoes and carts are all available to rent. However, if you are cruising to Bermuda it is very easy to bring your own golf clubs on board.

24. Tom Moore’s Jungle/Blue Hole Park

If you are looking for something different that is not often on the cruiser’s radar, make your way to Tom Moore’s Jungle in the parish of Hamilton. This nature reserve has wooded paths, mangroves, caves and grottos, including well known Blue Grotto. You’ll see a variety of birds and fish as well.

There’s always an interesting story in Bermuda: this nature reserve is named after Irish poet Tom Moore, who wrote poetry under a calabash tree in this reserve in 1844. The famous tree was destroyed in a hurricane several years ago, however its branches have begun to grow again.

25. Dining in Bermuda & Local Eats

Bermuda is a bit on the expensive side, as a lot is imported from the US or Britain. Since you are cruising, try to plan your day so that you can take advantage of eating some meals on the ship and some meals in Bermuda.

Some of the most popular pubs for both locals and tourists include the Hog Penny Pub or Flanagan’s Irish Pub in Hamilton. If you want to grab a bite close to the ship, a great spot is The Frog and Onion Pub.

A little place quite close to the cruise port that is distinctively local is Woody’s. It’s only about 5 minutes away by cab. I’ve unfortunately not eaten there yet, however I hear from the locals that they make a fabulous fish sandwich!

My favorite thing o do was on the other end of the island is an old NASA tracking station. Looking around old buildings and tracking equipment from the 60’s was cool. It also has over a two mile long runway from the old space. Shuttle days. Built for emergency landings of shuttle.

Royal Naval Dockyard, Bermuda

This port at the western tip of Bermuda was once a working fort, built by Britain's Royal Navy in the 1830s. Bermuda Shore Excursions?

My family and I (all adults) are going on the Bermuda cruise (docking in Kings Wharf) this summer. Does anyone have suggestions about the best shore excursions? We are planning on booking the Crystal Caves excursion but we have two other open days. The Celebrity website isn't letting us select days or times for excursions but that's another story lol.

Most of what can be done by excursion, can be done DIY, and save money at the same time. For example, you don't need an excursion to go to Crystal Caves. This is something you can easily DIY. Want to do a taxi tour? Hire a 'blue flag' taxi for a tour of the island. An excursion ties you to the times to go and the duration. You should decide when and for how long. JMHO

You can get a three day bus and ferry ticket and can go just about anywhere. Check out the port of calls boards for mort information. I would suggest going to St. George and taking their walking tour, Horseshoe Bay beach ( just beautiful), Crystal Caves, Gibbs Lighthouse.

When myself and my husband went last summer we booked most excursions when we arrived. We went to Horseshoe Bay Beach, Elbow Bay Beach, Segway Tour, and jet skis. We did book our catamaran sunset sail through the ship. The shore excursions offered by Celebrity are great, but you can save money by booking them on your own before you go or after you arrive as you have three days there. We spent our last day exploring the dockyard. If you buy tickets for the ferry or bus you may have more freedom to explore the island (Hamilton, St. George's, etc.) I highly recommend you check out the Bermuda board :)

You do not need a ship's tour in Bemuda. Taxis are freely available at the Dockyard where the ship docks and most of the drivers are certified Blue Flag guides. Just ask at the taxi rank. We were in Bermuda in 2014 on the Summit and on the 2015 Eclipse Transatlantic. We used these taxi tours in 2014 and the guide was very good and he showed us lots. We paid $40 an hour and did a four hour tour. I imagine it will a bit more now but if there are a few if you it would work out quite reasonable.

We also went to Crystal and Fantasy Caves on our second day when the Summit was in Bermuda. It's reachable by bus from Hamilton and St George's . There's also a Swizzle Inn within a minute's walk from the caves and a bus to Hamilton from there.

When we went to the caves we took the ferry to St George's, taxi to the caves, walked a few minutes to Swizzle Inn ( nice food, great rum sizzles), bus back to Hamilton and then ferry back to the ship.

At the time we went you could get a 3 day pass for the ferries and buses.

Bus stops in Bermuda have different coloured poles, blue and pink. Stops with blue poles mean the bus is heading away from Hamilton and pink poles mean bus heading towards Hamilton. The bus stop is only a minute walk from the ship's dock as are the taxis. Another minute or so will take you to the shops etc at the Dockyard at King's Wharf. The ferries leave just a few minutes walk from where the ship docks.

Just an example of how to save cost over the cruise line's excursion.

Token/ for 14 zone zone bus ticket $4.50 each way, or you can opt for the 2 day unlimited transportation pass (good for both ferries and all bus routes) for $31.50 per adult. Another option is the private run shuttles, though not completely sure but I think the dock to attraction "door" shuttles are $20 /adult round trip.

Crystal and Fantasy Caves admission is $22 each or as a combo at $30. A really nice thing with the 2 cave package on your own is you can space the climbs between the 2 caves to your fitness level, taking a break at the snack bar or just sitting in the shade.

If you opt for the unlimited public transport pass you can also easily grab a bus from the caves to go over to the Aquarium and Zoo ($10/adult admission), head over to historic St. Georges, head into Hamilton for shopping or the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (admission $15/adult), or get off at any of the free admission South Shore Beaches (including Horseshoe Bay Beach) to see the pink sand and take a dip.

As for other things to do on the island plan to spend at least 1/2 a day just exploring the Royal Naval Dockyard . Bermuda also has several approved tourist information websites like:

We found it very easy to take the ship's excursions in Bermuda, avoids the lines for public transport.

We did a nice water tour from the pier..saw beautiful homes and landmarks,. Tour ends in Hamilton.,.and tour provides return ferry ticket, Had a great time walking all over Hamilton, enjoyed the public park with moongate ,etc and a tavern lunch. Used our ferry ticket back to the ship.

Also took a full island bus tour,,..hit all the landmarks, photo stops and had time for a quick lunch in St Georges. Easy fun day.

I did the full island mini bus tour also and recommend it. Bermuda is easy to get around on public transportation but not being as young or as mobile as I use to be this was an easy and enjoyable tour which included the light house, different neighborhoods, a stop in St. George for lunch and a quick ride thru Hamilton.

Our first trip to Bermuda, we took an island tour through the cruise line, and got a good feel for the layout of the island. we then rented a scooter, which we parked next to the ship for the 2 days we were in port. this was a LONG time ago, and honestly I would not recommend this. traffic is much heavier now than in '95, and Bermuda is notorious for scooter wrecks.

Public transportation is plentiful, cheap, and extremely easy to navigate. All busses go to Hamilton, and then back out again. every bus route we took had incredible coastline views, the drivers were personable and helpful, and we never found the busses to be crowded. Would you rather travel via boat? you can reach most of the island via ferry as well from the Dockyard. As an earlier poster wrote, you can buy tokens, or multi day passes at the Visitor Information Centers at the Dockyard.

In a pinch or after-hours you can use taxis, but expect to be shocked at the cost. Last year we stayed by St George, and were quoted a cost of $70 to get to Horseshoe Bay by taxi (for 2 ppl)

My wife and I were very disappointed in the SunSet Catamaran Cruise, the Sun Set was beautiful but the Captian and Crew were more suited for a drinking party (we both drink).

What's good for someone with mobility issues (can't do much walking/standing - ferry will be too long of a walk), but wants to see Hamilton, St. Georges, historic sites, and do some photography?

You really need to book with Ricky he meets you with his beautiful van right where you get off the ship. The guy is great and you will have the "time of your life" on beautiful Bermuda. See my previous post. :cool:

another fun thing to do is rent a boston whaler or similar boat for the afternoon. we did this last year and had a blast. we saw the America's cup catamarans practice up close! we used somerset bridge water sports. they are about 20 minutes from the dockyard. would recommend a reservation.

Disembarkation: Everything You Need to Know

Make the most of the day in your disembarkation port, which will run all the more smoothly with a little preparation and planning.

Disembarking a cruise ship is not the same as checking out of a hotel on your last day. Disembarkation day is a carefully choreographed event. It has to be, with sometimes 2,000 guests or more and their luggage to move from the ship to the cruise terminal and beyond in a short time.

Your Celebrity Cruises crew are highly experienced in this logistical exercise, though, and will do all they can to make that bittersweet goodbye as easy as possible.

What is a disembarkation port?

A disembarkation port is a port where a cruise ends. Most passengers will leave the ship here, apart from those who have booked back-to-back cruises.

The ship will then be “turned around”—cleaned top to bottom, refueled, and re-provisioned with everything that’s needed for the next voyage.

Once all the disembarking guests have left, after a brief lull, new arrivals will begin to check in, ready for the next cruise.

Typical disembarkation ports tend to be gateway cities with good air and road access, like Miami, Tampa, and Fort Lauderdale in Florida; Cape Liberty, New Jersey; and San Juan, Puerto Rico in the Caribbean.

In Europe , disembarkation ports include Barcelona, Rome, Athens, and Southampton, England. Sydney, Australia and Singapore are two of Celebrity’s disembarkation ports in the Asia-Pacific region.

What happens on disembarkation day?

Disembarkation day is a busy day on a cruise ship. You’ll be invited to put your luggage outside your stateroom the night before. It will be collected by the crew overnight and will be waiting for you in the terminal when you leave the ship.

You’ll make sure your final bill is settled the day before, pack your carry-on luggage, and have breakfast. When your pre-allocated disembarkation time comes, make your way to the gangway.

You will then identify and claim your luggage in the terminal, clear customs, and take whatever onward transportation you’ve arranged.

How will I know on board what to expect on disembarkation day?

Towards the end of your cruise, there will be a talk on disembarkation procedures. This will be shown on your stateroom TV, too, in case you miss it. You’ll also find details in the daily program.

You will already have been asked about your arrangements on disembarkation day. These might include a transfer to the airport arranged by Celebrity Cruises, or a shore excursion that ends at the airport.

You may have made independent plans, in which case you will need to add your flight details to the form you’ll be given, or the time your private pickup is booked.

A day or so before the voyage ends, your stateroom attendant will deliver a disembarkation letter and a set of colored luggage tags. The letter will tell you what time you are due to disembark. On the day, you will be called by group number or color code. You should stick to these staggered times to avoid congestion at the gangway.

If you’re not happy with the time you have been allocated, take it up with Guest Services as soon as possible rather than waiting until disembarkation day.

Do I have to put my luggage out for collection the night before disembarkation?

The vast majority of cruisers put their luggage outside their stateroom door, color-tagged and locked, the night before disembarkation. It’s more convenient and practical, as dragging heavy bags into crowded elevators and down a sometimes steep gangway is no fun for anybody.

But if you feel strongly about hanging onto your bag, or are perhaps traveling light with only a small wheelie on a short cruise, you can opt for “self disembarkation”. This usually means you can leave the ship as soon as disembarkation has begun.

How long can you stay on the ship on disembarkation day?

Disembarkation day isn’t a time to linger on board as the crew has to work hard to prepare the ship for the next voyage. Normally, there’s a window between around 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. for disembarkation. If your flight isn’t until much later, you will be given a later slot in this window, but this isn’t a day to expect to sleep in.

If you’ve booked a back-to-back cruise, you can relax on board during disembarkation day, or join a shore excursion while the new guests are checking in.

You will normally be asked to vacate your stateroom by 8 a.m. so the stateroom attendant can prepare it for the next guest. If your allocated disembarkation time is later than this, there will be public areas on the ship where you can relax with your carry-on before you leave.

How early can you get off?

A ship will usually only have a short distance to travel from its penultimate port to the disembarkation port to account for any delays or weather issues; no cruise line wants to arrive late on turnaround day. So you may find you’re docked alongside very early in the morning.

But the ship has to be cleared by the local authorities before anybody can leave. Luggage has to be offloaded, too.

When you book your cruise, you will be told about the earliest reasonable flight departure time to choose. A very early morning flight, for example, is usually impractical. If you do have a relatively early flight, this will be factored in when disembarkation groups are allocated.

Disembarkation times vary from port to port, but it is unusual for the process to begin any earlier than 7 a.m.

Is there time for breakfast?

Of course! You are still on vacation and will never be sent away hungry. Most of the usual breakfast venues will be open, including Café al Bacio for coffee to go.

Restaurants may be busier than usual as everybody is preparing to leave within the same short timespan, and some people may have already left their staterooms and will be carrying their hand baggage with them.

What documents do I need for disembarkation and customs?

You will need your passport and receipts for any duty-free goods you have bought, in case you get stopped at customs. Normally, the ship will have been cleared by the local immigration authorities, but you may still be required to show a passport to officials when you disembark.

If you have already checked in for your flight and feel happier with a paper boarding pass, you can print this out in the ship’s internet center. If you’ve parked your car at the port, make sure you have the receipt and know where it is.

You will also need your SeaPass key card to leave the ship for one last time.

How long does it take to get off a cruise ship?

If everybody follows the instructions they have been given and shows up at the gangway when invited, getting off a ship is quick and easy. You should be able to disembark in 15 to 30 minutes, including collecting your baggage in the terminal.

There can be delays, though, and the ship is at the whim of the local immigration authorities. This is another compelling reason for leaving plenty of time between your scheduled disembarkation time and your flight home.

If you have booked an airport transfer or a disembarkation day tour with Celebrity, your transportation will wait until everybody is present.

How do I choose the right disembarkation port for my cruise?

First, to be clear, you can’t choose where to disembark your cruise. Unless there is some kind of personal emergency or you have booked two back-to-back cruises, everybody disembarks on the same day in the same port.

It’s worth thinking about where your cruise ends, though, and what you might want to do to extend your vacation. If, for example, you’ve always wanted to see Athens and you’ve booked a cruise that ends in the Greek capital, you’re not going to actually see Athens unless you extend your stay there. The transfer from the port to the airport will not take you through the city center.

The same applies to Rome and Barcelona . So by all means pick a disembarkation port that you want to see, but bear in mind that unless the ship arrives there the day before the end of the cruise, you will need to add on a night somewhere, or book an evening flight and plan your day carefully.

Can I arrange transportation from the disembarkation port to the airport or other destinations?

Yes, of course. Celebrity Cruises offers airport transfers, which can be pre-booked, either as a group transfer by coach or a private car or van. If you haven’t pre-booked and decide that you would like an airport transfer, this can be done on board through your Guest Account or the Celebrity Cruises app up to five days before the end of the cruise.

In the vast majority of disembarkation ports, taxis will wait to pick up independent travelers. But do your research first; in some instances, the airport is a long way from the seaport. If you disembark in Southampton, England , for example, the drive to London Heathrow Airport is at least one hour and a taxi will be expensive.

What happens if my flight is in the evening?

An evening flight means you have the whole day to enjoy your disembarkation port. But this needs to be planned, as you will most likely have luggage. There’s no fun in going straight to the airport and sitting there for eight hours or so—and your flight check-in will not be open, in any case.

There are various ways to make the most of your time in your disembarkation port. You could go to the airport and deposit your bags in a left luggage locker and then take off for a day in town. This is only practical if the airport is not too far from where you want to go, though.

Booking a day room in a hotel is an option and also means you can freshen up before your evening flight. Be sure to book somewhere that will allow early check-in.

Celebrity Cruises offers tours with airport and sometimes rail station and downtown hotel drop-offs in most ports. In Sydney , for example, you could join a city tour taking in the Opera House and Bondi Beach before being dropped off at the airport.

From Civitavecchia, the port for Rome, Italy , there’s the option of joining a wine-tasting tour in the Italian countryside before heading to the airport.

If your Alaska cruise ends in Vancouver , you could take a trip to the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, deep in the forest, that ends with an airport drop-off.

Best of all, you could extend your stay. Celebrity Cruises offers a comprehensive City Stays program , which means everything will be organized for you.

In Alaska , you could pre-book a Cruisetour to extend your vacation, heading off to the wilds of Denali National Park to see a different face of the 49th state.

What are some things not to do on disembarkation day?

• Don’t pack all your clothes in your suitcase and leave it for collection the night before. Nobody wants to be disembarking in their PJs.
• Similarly, don’t pack your travel documents in your checked luggage. Keep them with you as you may need to show your passport in the customs hall.
• Don’t party too hard on your last night; while it’s tempting, disembarkation day is busy and comes with an early start, so a clear head helps.
• Don’t forget the valuables that you put in the safe on the first day.
• Don’t wait until disembarkation morning to check your final bill. If you need to ask questions about your account, this will delay your disembarkation. You can view your statement on your stateroom TV.
• Do not expect to use the ship’s facilities on disembarkation day; this is not the time for a last swim or a workout, and the onboard shops will be closed when the ship is in port.
• Don’t leave your key card in your stateroom. You will need it to leave the ship for the last time.
• Leave the bathrobe. The slippers are yours to take, but if you walk off with a bathrobe, the cost will be added to your account, even after you have left the ship.

That said, the fact that transatlantic cruises can last as few as seven nights means they may fit in your plans more easily than you may think. There are also some benefits to transatlantic crossings that may not be obvious, including lower nightly rates, more onboard credit, and more time to kick back and relax at a floating luxury resort in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

In May of 2024, Cunard's Queen Mary 2 vessel will offer three different transatlantic crossings of various lengths. The 18-night itinerary is especially interesting, since it lets you depart from the United States and arrive back in Brooklyn in the end with stops in both England and Germany, as well as plenty of sea days in between. Celebrity Cruises’ New Ship Celebrity Ascent Arrives in Europe

C elebrity Cruises’ flagship vessel, Celebrity Ascent , is setting sail for the first time in Europe when the ship arrives in Barcelona on Saturday, April 27.

Celebrity Ascent will start her European adventure with a nine-night Italian Riviera and France itinerary before serving the region throughout the summer. The ship will visit destinations in Spain, Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Turkey.

Onboard, Celebrity Ascent elevates vacations with spaces imagined by world-class designers including Nate Berkus and Kelly Hoppen CBE, culinary excellence from a Michelin-starred chef, and expansive onboard entertainment.

“We’re bringing our latest and greatest Edge Series ship to Europe, enabling guests to discover this diverse region with its stunning coastlines, while enjoying Celebrity Ascent’s premium facilities, elevated food and drink experiences, and wonderful entertainment,” Celebrity President Laura Hodges Bethge said.

The flagship vessel boasts 32 restaurants, bars, and lounges, as well as the cantilevered multi-purpose venue “The Magic Carpet,” which offers a bar, lounge area and al-fresco dining. Celebrity Ascent will also offer nightlife experiences, including three brand-new production shows in The Theatre and the Ascent After Dark: ‘Shine the Night’ parties on the Resort Deck.

The ship will sail a variety of seven- to 12-night escapes to the rocky coves and sandy beaches of the Mediterranean, ancient history in the Aegean, and the coast lining the Atlantic, all departing from key ports across Europe, like Barcelona, Spain; Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy; and Athens (Piraeus), Greece.
