System Of A Down and Korn kick off US co-headline tour and the setlist is a millennial metalheads' dream

Inside the first night of the Korn/System Of A Down co-headline tour - 41 songs, countless singalongs and the live debut of a new single

Korn

System Of A Down and Korn kicked off their run of US co-headline shows last night at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona. The two bands previously played a run of US dates in October 2021 before being forced to postpone their long-awaited Los Angeles stadium shows when SOAD vocalist Serj Tankian contracted COVID.

In December, an announcement was made that in addition to the rescheduled Los Angeles dates (set for February 4 and 5), the bands would play two further co-headline dates in Phoenix and San Diego, with support from post-metal group Russian Circles.

Last night (January 31) the bands kicked off this short US co-headline run when they played to 18,000 people in Phoenix, Arizona and the setlists are the things millennial metalheads dreams are made of. We're not drowning amidst an ocean of jealousy, honest.

Metal Hammer line break

A spectacle fit for arenas

Put aside the fact that System Of A Down and Korn were two of metal's biggest commercial forces at the turn of the millennium, both bands also represent the most influential and creative forces in our world for the past three decades. That alone should tell you just how special it is to see them sharing a bill, much less playing to 18,000+ people after a drought of shows that has seen most bands (and fans) go nowhere near a venue for two years plus.

Fittingly, the visuals from the shows are everything we could want from a massive metal double-header, stunning visuals reminding us just how excited we should be for any arena-size metal gigs in 2022.

And a combined set that effectively describes the best of millennial metal

With a combined total of 41 songs between them, Korn and System Of A Down weren't mucking about when it came to picking out their setlists. Any double-header that can start with Here To Stay and end on Sugar is one to be admired, but when you consider it also meanders through the likes of Falling Away From Me , Got The Life , Shoots And Ladders , Coming Undone , Freak On A Leash , BYOB, Chop Suey!, Radio/Video, Aerials and Toxicity on the way, jeez. As one fan put it, this setlist is everything.

Fans couldn't be more delighted

Considering the many delays to getting fully on the road (System Of A Down's Los Angeles shows were originally planned for summer 2020), there's a sense of relief inherent just to the fact that the shows happened in the first place. That they went off as well as they did however, is an absolute bonus and the reports on social media were glowing.

Korn/System Of A Down was the best concert I’ve been to in a long time. Completely worth only getting 6 hours of sleep this morning because I was so amped afterwards. February 1, 2022

There's nothing purer than seeing people lose their minds to *that* drop in Korn's set

With Korn's new album Requiem out on Friday, we expect there will be plenty of new jams to get stuck into by the time the band's next headline shows roll around. That said, we can't imagine anything whipping the crowd up into a frenzy quite like that drop at the tail-end of Freak On A Leash . God, we've missed that.

SEEING SYSTEM OF A DOWN AND KORN AGAINNNN MY BAIBES pic.twitter.com/Dj11sQXpX6 January 31, 2022

Korn played 'Start The Healing' for the first time

Put it down to a mad end of year or just the fact time seems entirely arbitrary since the pandemic hit, but it feels like ages since Korn first unveiled Start The Healing - the first single from Requiem . Except, the single actually only came out in November, meaning we've barely had it three months now and last night marked the first time the band played it live. The fact it didn't stick out amidst a tightly-packed 14-song setlist bodes well for the song, Start The Healing already feeling like a crowd-pleaser even before its parent album comes out.

System Of A Down played 27 songs!

You can't help but feel System Of A Down might have pulled a fast one on Korn, considering their set featured no less than 27 songs in the evening (compared to 14 Korn tracks). While we get SOAD can usually blast through a lot of quick numbers to round out the numbers, that's an obscene amount of idiosyncratic brilliance being brought to bear, particularly when the likes of Prison Song , Cigaro , Soldier Side , BYOB and Toxicity all get trotted out. There's nothing like listening to half of System Of A Down's discography in one headline set to remind you why the band are just so brilliant in the first place.

Including a few newer tracks

We don't want to come off as greedy or anything, but System Of A Down's Genocidal Humanoidz came out in November 2020 - almost 14 months ago. We understand that it was a 15-year wait before that, but Korn have a new album out on Friday . C'mon lads, step it up. We're being facetious of course, but it is incredibly gratifying to see the newer songs so proudly displayed in SOAD's set, showing just how great that spark of inspiration still is when the mood strikes the band right.

People still can't quite get their heads around System Of A Down's Sugar

Never mind that Sugar is almost 25 years old (God, when did that happen?), the song remains one of metal's weirdest (but no less wonderful) anthems. That doesn't stop it completely confounding audiences who try to sing along, mind - from spitting the verses until all the words jumble into one or shouting 'sugar!' at the wrong point, its a chaotic mess and we utterly adore it.

Even from the rafters the show looks spectacular

Its an inevitability of arena shows that somebody has to sit in the nosebleeds, but as the below video shows sometimes that just offers a bird's eye view of something spectacular...

We'd quite like System Of A Down back this side of the Atlantic in 2022

Way back in the mists of time, System Of A Down and Korn were both booked for Download 2020. Obviously the pandemic put a hold on that happening, but despite the fact Download has retained mostly the same line-up (Korn are still there, hooray!) the lack of System Of A Down is pretty glaring after seeing all the footage of these shows. But you know what? That's fine - perhaps we can hold out hope of a SOAD headline show or even tour announcement before the end of 2022. It's been 7 years since the band played Wembley Arena and we reckon it's high time we get some more arena dates lined up. Hell, we'd even go for stadiums - Rammstein seem to be doing alright out of it, after all.

Seeing a sea of metalheads *still* gets us insanely emotional

The worst of lockdown might be behind us (we hope!) and live music might have made a return , but it's still been fairly slim pickings for arena-sized rock and metal gigs over the past 12 months. Considering we're still seeing tours cancel or postpone ( Aerosmith , Sabaton ) we're not entirely sure when arena-sized metal gigs will come back to the UK (our fingers are crossed for Ghost , especially after seeing the band's first US date ) but even if we were guaranteed to have some massive shows in the next few weeks, it wouldn't stop us getting a little choked up seeing a full arena gathering to celebrate heavy metal. More of this in 2022, please.

Why Do Concerts Have Opening Acts?

If you’ve recently attended a concert, you might be wondering what the purpose of the opening acts were. Whilst you might not realize it, there are actually a  whole host  of reasons why concerts have opening acts.

So, why do concerts have opening acts?

Concerts have opening acts to provide value for money, cross-promote different artists and ‘warm up’ the audience for the featured artist.

Keep reading for a complete guide on the purpose of opening acts, as well as a full FAQ.

Table of Contents

To Provide Value For Money

The reason ticket prices are often so expensive is because concerts have  massive  overheads. Venue hire rates are sky-high, whilst the musicians themselves will have to be provided with catering, travel, accommodation and a salary.

Despite the substantial costs involved, a featured artist will only be able to perform for between  90 and 120 minutes.  This is for two main reasons:

  • Lack of material: On average, bands & artists will release an album every 1-2 years. As touring generates significantly more revenue than album sales in today’s industry, it’s often prioritized over recording. A band or artist that’s only one or two albums in simply won’t have enough material to last longer than a couple of hours.
  • Fatigue:  Live performance is a physically-demanding activity. Musicians may have to perform energetic choreography whilst coping with the stress of playing in front of a packed audience. Similarly, a singer’s voice will start experiencing fatigue after approximately two hours of performing.

Adding additional acts to the bill is an effective way of making the event look more reasonably-priced.

To Cross-Promote Different Acts

Here’s something you might not know about concerts:

They’re basically a giant ad for a record label, promoter or management company.

One of the quickest, cheapest and most-effective ways for an up-and-coming act to build their following is to play in front of large crowds of people on a regular basis.

Therefore, when a business invests money into a concert for an established artist they manage, they’ll use the opportunity to cross-promote smaller acts on their roster with the intention of growing their audience.

On occasion, the featured artist will be able to choose the opening acts themselves. If this is the case, they’ll usually choose an act who they’re fans of (or, more-cynically, friends with) and feel deserve more exposure.

To ‘Warm Up’ The Audience

Opening acts are  extremely  effective at warming up the audience up for the featured artist. If the audience has already been singing and dancing prior to the featured artist playing, they’re much-more-likely  to continue throughout the entirety of the featured artist’s set.

Similarly, the opening act will usually ‘hype’ the audience up for the featured artist at various points throughout their set. This will often be done by asking the audience how excited they are for the headliner or getting the crowd to chant the featured artist’s name.

The reason opening acts are so effective at building hype is because  they’re trying to win the audience over.  As it’s unlikely the audience will know any of their material, opening acts emphasize audience participation, strong songs and energetic performances.

By the end of their set, the audience will have eased into the concert atmosphere (and likely had time for a couple of drinks) before the featured artist.

Do All Concerts Have Opening Acts?

Whilst  most  concerts will feature opening acts, not  all  of them will. Here are a few types of events that usually won’t feature opening acts:

  • Secret shows:  Secret shows are live performance events that are either announced last-minute or restricted to the general public (tickets are usually won via some form of competition). They’re usually done to promote something (such as a brand, recorded album or an upcoming tour). Secret shows almost-never feature an opening act, instead opting for a brief set from the featured artist.
  • Album launches: Whilst some album launch shows will feature opening acts, many will opt for a meet & greet or signing with the featured artist. Opening acts usually won’t be used in favor of a signing or meet & greet session.
  • Co-headline concerts:  Occasionally, two established bands or artists will tour with each other as co-headliners, taking it in turns to play first. Whilst one band or artist will play before the other, they’re both considered headline acts. This means their set times will usually be of a similar length and the audience will likely know their material.

D o Opening Acts Get Paid?

When supporting an established artist, the opening act will almost-certainly be paid a fee. The fee can range from several hundred to several thousand dollars, depending on the size of the artist they’re supporting.

However, there’s also a controversial practice in the industry called  pay-to-play.  This is where a smaller act pays a more-established one to be their opening act. Whilst this can be an effective way of building a following, it’s very controversial and is generally avoided by established acts.

How Are Opening Acts Chosen?

There are several criteria for choosing an opening act:

  • Relationship to the featured artist:  As previously mentioned, opening acts are usually part of the same label/promotions/management roster as the featured artist. If the featured artist is able to choose their own opening acts for a concert, they’ll generally choose an act their fans of or friends with.
  • Size:  Opening acts are  almost-always  less-established than the featured artist. Therefore, they get the benefit of building their following (which subsequently increases their income).
  • Genre:  Opening acts will usually be required to play a similar style of music to the featured artist (otherwise the crowd won’t like them!)

How Long Do Opening Acts Last?

On average, each opening act will play for between 30 and 45 minutes.

Adrian Vandenberg, Geoff Tate prepare 2024 co-headlining North American tour

Vandenberg presents the official video for “Hit the Ground Running”

Geoff Tate and Adrian Vandenberg have shared personal insights into their planned set lists for the co-headline tour commencing in Clearwater, FL on February 26th. Both artists will be presenting the hits from their historical careers alongside current repertoire.

“Great to be playing all the hits from my fans’ favorite albums. I love being able to have the whole crowd singing along with songs they have known and loved,” Tate offers.

“I’m very excited to finally, finally cross the ocean and tour the States again for the first time since my Whitesnake Slip Of The Tongue Tour in 1990,” Vandenberg adds. “1990. It’s great to have the luxury of being in a position to handpick the blockbuster songs from my 12 years with Whitesnake in their glorious 80s period and from my classic Vandenberg years. I can’t wait to hit the stages with big ones such as ‘Here I Go Again,’ ‘Still Of The Night,’ ‘Is this Love,’ ‘Judgement Day,’ ‘Fool For Your Lovin,’ etc. And of course, some classic Vandenberg hits such as ‘Burning Heart,’ Your Love Is In Vain,’ ‘Wait Till’ the Sh*t Hits The Fan,’ etc. It’s great to have a band together with world-class musicians and a singer who delivers these tracks the way they have to be delivered. And we all know that’s a seriously high standard!. Another huge kick is the amazing reception of my band’s most recent Vandenberg albums 2020 and Sin , so naturally some songs from these albums will be in the set as well. It’s gonna be fantastic to see as many of you as possible on this tour because I missed you guys! Between the songs performed on our end, and Geoff presenting performances from his Queensrÿche years, it is going to be a great show.”

Vandenberg and Music Theories Recordings released Sin  last August. Three reveals were presented in to street date. Vandenberg shared at the time, “Sin. Just a tiny, three-letter word but one with a very comprehensive meaning. Everything in between a little white lie and a murder. So, it deserves a powerful, heavy, epic song to do it justice.”

The band has presented a new music video for the song “Hit The Ground Running.”

Every album paints a picture. Instead of utilizing a brush and canvas, Vandenberg paints with towering vocals, earthquake-like rhythms, and the iconic and instantly recognizable fretwork of guitarist and namesake Adrian Vandenberg. Joined by vocalist Mats Levén, drummer Koen Herfst, and bassist Randy van der Elsen, the influential axe-slinger delivers a vibrant, visceral, and vital vision on the group’s fifth full-length offering, Sin via Mascot Label Group, brought to life in broad strokes of anthemic hard rock and airtight metal and produced by Bob Marlette [Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper, Rob Zombie]

Established in 2000, The Used was brought to life and have since released a collection of albums that pioneered the scene of emo rock. High energy live shows, gut wrenching relatable lyrics, and melodies that blended pop sensibility and hard rock was the perfect combination to make an everlasting impression on fans globally.

The rock icons released their eighth studio album, Heartwork, in 2020 via Big Noise. It arrived with the unbounded spirit of the pair of platinum albums that first introduced The Used to the world, mixed with the dramatic air of their gold-certified third. The emotion, sincerity, and vulnerability found on The Used (2002) and In Love and Death (2004) is more urgent and insistent than ever on Heartwork, a diverse 16-song offering filled of self-examination, hyper-literate exploration, political pyromania, and keenly self-aware yet unrestrained whimsy. The band celebrated a strong first week, locking in #2 spots on both the Current Alternative and Record Label Independent Album charts, #3 on both Current Rock and Top Current Album charts as well as landing in the Billboard Top 200 at the #87 spot.

The Charlatans and Ride have announced plans for a North American co-headline tour, set to begin January 30, 2023 at New York City’s Webster Hall and then continue through a February 18 finale at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, CA. Tickets for all announced dates go on sale Friday, December 2 at 10 am (local).

In 1993, The Charlatans and Ride co-headlined Daytripper—two now-legendary concert events held in the British seaside towns of Brighton and Blackpool. The upcoming North American tour will once again see the two bands trading off the headline slot each night, with both performing classic albums in full–The Charlatans performing 1992’s landmark sophomore LP, Between 10th and 11th , and Ride performing 1990’s debut masterpiece, Nowhere –along with a selection of greatest hits, fan favorites, and more.

The Charlatans have been on a remarkable journey for over three decades, from their beginnings as 1990 Manchester scene hopefuls to their current role as one of the most durable and treasured bands in British music, joined by a passionate and loyal following that has given them lasting success. Somehow, the band have not just carried on during this run but adapted and transformed. The classic Charlatans sound–driving Hammond organ, Northern Soul and house-influenced rhythms, swaggering guitars, and Tim Burgess’s sunny yet somehow yearning vocals–is instantly recognizable.

Hailed by PopMatters as “a certifiable classic,” Between 10th and 11th was originally released in 1992 and features such classic singles as “Tremolo Song,” “I Don’t Want To See The Sights,” and the band’s biggest US hit to date, “Weirdo.” More recently, The Charlatans celebrated their own 30th anniversary with 2021’s career-spanning best-of, A Head Full of Ideas , and a similarly titled 2021-22 world tour.

In addition, frontman Tim Burgess has created the hugely popular Tim’s Twitter Listening Party, an ongoing series of real-time album playbacks via Twitter, featuring stories from bands and fans, rarely seen images, and exclusive insights and anecdotes from the artists who created some of music’s most iconic albums.

The decision to embark on this tour was an easy one for both bands, united by their fresh and acclaimed new records.  VOIVOD , the Canadian heavy metal connoisseurs, recently released their latest album,  “Morgoth Tales” , under the banners of  Century Media ,  The Orchard  and  Sony Music . This record is a testament to their enduring impact in the metal scene, showcasing their evolution and prowess.

Furthermore, VOIVOD ‘s 2022 release, “ Synchro Anarchy “, has garnered significant acclaim, winning the 2023 Juno Award for “Best Hard Rock/Metal Album” in Canada. This recognition is a clear indicator of VOIVOD ‘s undiminished skill and relevance in the genre.

BEARTOOTH Shares New Song 'Sunshine!'

BEARTOOTH has released a new single, "Sunshine!" The track has all the hallmarks of your favorite BEARTOOTH bangers — cranked up to 11. There's a supremely catchy, anthemic singalong chorus and a tectonic plate-shifting breakdown that will have you pumping your fist in the air. Say hello to your feel-good hit of the summer, courtesy of the ' TOOTH !

" 'Sunshine!' is about a lot of things, the most obvious being seasonal depression," says vocalist Caleb Shomo . "It's always been prevalent in my life but as I grow older, it gets more intense. This song is also about moving on from the dark place I was in during 2020-2021. At the end of the day, life should be enjoyed and a BEARTOOTH song doesn't always have to be miserable."

In other BEARTOOTH news, the band was recently nominated for a Libera Award for "Best Heavy Record" for the 2022 hit single "Riptide" , which has garnered over 20 million streams to date. They also wrapped an 18-date, sold-out tour of Europe, where they headlined some of their biggest shows to date, including the iconic Wembley Arena. It marked the band's most successful overseas run its history so far.

BEARTOOTH will next embark on a 38-date U.S. co-headline tour alongside TRIVIUM , which includes a triumphant return home at Sonic Temple festival in Columbus, Ohio. The band will follow the co-headliner with trips to Australia and Europe, while concluding 2023 with an appearance at Blue Ridge Rock Festival in Alton, Virginia.

BEARTOOTH has released four albums thus far: "Disgusting" (2014), "Aggressive" (2016), "Disease" (2018) and "Below" (2021).

The Ohio act recently released a deluxe edition of "Below" . "Below Deluxe" is expanded to include 32 tracks. For this edition, BEARTOOTH added two new bonus tracks, "Fighting Back" and "Permanently Sealed" , as well as a refreshed version of current radio single "Skin (Alternate Universe Version)" , which mixes acoustics and electrics. It also includes the full, 17-track live recordings from the "Live From The Journey Below" livestream, recorded at the historic Clyde Theatre in Fort Wayne, Indiana in July 2021. An exclusive 52-track "Special Video Edition" Apple eMix bundle includes all the official videos plus the videos from "Live From The Journey Below" .

About Twenty One Pilots:

Grammy-Award winning band, Twenty One Pilots, have shifted music and culture as an incomparable creative force and with an ever-evolving vision. The Columbus, OH duo—Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun— have tallied over 33 billion global streams and counting, sold north of three million tickets worldwide, notched dozens of multi-Platinum certifications, and even claimed a spot in the Guinness® Book of World Records. In historic fashion, their quadruple-Platinum breakout LP, Blurryface , took flight as “the first album to notch a RIAA Gold or Platinum certification for every one of its songs ,” while Vessel followed suit and achieved the same distinction. They elevated to rarified air as “one of only 18 artists to earn multiple RIAA Diamond certifications , ” going Diamond with “Stressed Out” and “Heathens.” 2018’s Platinum-certified Trench extended the ambitious concept laid out in Blurryface and delivered the multi-Platinum and Platinum singles: “Chlorine,” “My Blood” and the GRAMMY® Award-nominated “Jumpsuit.” They followed Trench with their Gold-certified LP Scaled And Icy , achieving “the biggest opening week for a rock album in 2021” by capturing #1 on the Billboard Top Rock Albums and Top Alternative Albums charts and crashing the Top 3 of the Billboard 200. Beyond rapturous headline shows at arenas and festivals worldwide, Twenty One Pilots have notably architected an immersive world without comparison, originating a multi-album conceptual arc across Blurryface , Trench , and Scaled And Icy . Exactly nine years to the date of the Blurryface album release, they complete this story on their seventh full-length offering, Clancy [Fueled By Ramen], out May 17, 2024. Led by the single “Overcompensate,” the LP signals the dawn of another era for Twenty One Pilots and alternative rock music at large.

‘The Voice’ Winner Huntley Recreates Iconic Andy Griffith Photo in “Full Circle Moment”

by Erinn Callahan January 31, 2024, 6:00 am

Life has been a whirlwind for Huntley since being crowned The Voice season 24 winner. The last four weeks have seen him belting the national anthem for his favorite NFL team, bringing smiles to the faces of those experiencing homelessness, and performing before two sold-out crowds at the legendary Pioneer Theater in Manteo, North Carolina.

Videos by American Songwriter

Huntley may not have had time to process his “unbelievable” win, but he did take a moment to stand in the shoes of one of his heroes. The alt-rock powerhouse recently posted a photo to his Instagram that showed him recreating an iconic picture of Pioneer Theater staple Andy Griffith.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Michael Huntley (@huntleymusic)

Huntley Does “The Andy”

The black-and-white photo shows Huntley grinning broadly from his vantage point atop a ladder as he points to a marquee featuring his name. The picture replicates one taken of Griffith at the 1957 opening of his first feature film, “Face in the Crowd.”

Local legend Griffith charmed many a Pioneer Theater audience with his folksy demeanor, deep Southern drawl, and lovably gruff voice. The venue is one of the longest-running family-owned movie theaters in the country. It is beloved for its intimate atmosphere, bygone ticket prices ($7 to see a movie), and popcorn “made with love,” according to WAVY.com.

The historic venue seemed delighted to extend the same hospitality to Huntley. In a Facebook post they wrote, “We are honored to be a part of this young man’s dream. Huntley is the real deal. Authentic, humble, gifted are just a few words to describe him.”

Coming Full Circle

The moment likely felt all the more surreal for Huntley. He and his mother bonded over reruns of “The Andy Griffith Show” on Nick At Nite during his childhood in Spring Hill, Florida.

“Another full circle moment!” Huntley wrote in the caption, punctuated with two emojis: a pair of praying hands and the universal “rock on” symbol.

Huntley’s enthusiasm was contagious. “So happy to see your dreams coming true,” one fan commented on Instagram. “Enjoy, you deserve every minute of it.”

“How beautiful to have come full circle and to honor that journey,” another user wrote.
