Congo Safari Packages: Our Top Picks

The Republic of the Congo (the Congo, or Congo-Brazzaville) is a small country along the west coast of Africa. This basin is drained by rivers like the Sangha, Mambili, and the mighty Congo, which give a route through the jungle to far-flung national parks like Odzala-Kokoua . The wilderness is especially prized and traditional ways of life are preserved in certain areas. The heavy forested landscape is characterized by swamps, bais, and rivers; this is ideal habitat for western lowland gorillas; and it is the remarkable wildlife interactions accessible here that are attracting more and more tourists to the Congo . The highlight for visitors is gorilla trekking, which should not be missed.

Despite its tumultuous history, the French colony of Congo-Brazzaville is presently seen as tranquil, stable, and fast developing. Brazzaville, the capital, is sometimes referred to as the “Little Paris of Africa” due to the abundance of art, fabric booths, flower markets, cafés, and the aroma of freshly baked baguettes wafting from the city’s many boulangeries.

Still, tourism has only been around for a short while. Its cities may not be up to five-star standards, but its wilderness areas and wildlife encounters are, thanks to its relative isolation for so long. The Congo is an amazing place to visit if you don’t mind getting your hands dirty.

Luxury & Private Republic of the Congo Safaris

Luxury safaris in the Republic of the Congo offer an unparalleled experience exploring this unique African country. The Republic of the Congo (the Congo, or Congo-Brazzaville) is a small country near the west coast of Africa. Rivers such as the Sangha , Mambili, and the mighty Congo drain this basin and provide a means of exploration through dense forests and access to remote national parks such as Odzala-Kokoua .

In these regions—perhaps more than any other—wilderness is the highlight, and traditional cultures persist. Swamps, bais, and rivers characterize the heavily forested landscape, and make it prime western lowland gorilla habitat—and it’s the extraordinary wildlife interactions available here that make the Congo a growing tourist destination. Gorilla trekking is the highlight for travelers here and not to be missed.

What to expect on a luxury safari to Republic of the Congo

A former French colony, Congo-Brazzaville has had a troubled past but is now considered calm, stable, and rapidly developing. Dubbed the “Little Paris of Africa,” its French history is felt most in the capital city of Brazzaville with its vibrant streets lined with art, fabric stalls, flower markets, cafés and the smell of fresh-baked baguettes wafting from one of its many boulangeries.

That said, tourism is still relatively new. Travelers should not expect five-star amenities in the cities, but because it has been off-the-radar for so long, its wilderness areas and wildlife encounters are truly unforgettable adventures. If you can stand to get your hands a little dirty, the Congo won’t disappoint.

Republic of the Congo Travel Tips From Our Experts

  • French is the official language, so we recommend a private guide in the capital.
  • Brazzaville ‘s art scene is on the rise, making gallery visits a good way to explore the capital.
  • Odzala-Kokoua National Park is home to pioneering research of the western lowland gorilla.
  • Luxury & Private Safaris in Republic of the Congo: Travelers who need only five-star accommodation without the hiccups of a developing tourist industry will not like the Congo.
  • If you are not an active, hands-on traveler, or if you want the classic Out of Africa safari experience, the Congo is not a good fit.
  • Prepare to walk in Congo. Much of your experience will be active. Gorilla trekking , exploring the bais, night walks, and kayaking are mainstay activities. Game drives are possible, but the highlights are best accessed on foot.

Is Republic of the Congo the right destination for you?

  • Republic of the Congo is best for adventurous travelers who prioritize unique and remote experiences over top-of-the-line luxury.
  • It is ideal for escaping the usual tourist circuits, and exploring outside of the typical safari game drive.
  • Experiences in the Congo are based primarily around walking, boating, and community interactions.
  • The country is also a must for those who want to track Africa’s western lowland gorilla.
  • For gorilla viewing, a medical requirements form must be completed by the guest’s doctor to confirm that they are free from measles, polio and tuberculosis, and in good health.

What is the Best Time to Visit Republic of the Congo?

Being just north of the equator, the climate at Odzala is fairly consistent throughout the year, hot and humid. Generally, there are four seasons, which are alternating dry and rainy. The dry seasons include November to February and June to August. These are the coolest, driest months in Odzala National Park, which make it our preferred travel time. Just keep in mind that rainfall still occurs and can be quite variable during the dry season.

The rainy seasons are from March to May and September to October. Temperatures tend to be hotter, and humidity high, and tropical rainstorms contrast with sustained periods of clear blue skies – creating beautiful light for photographers .

How much does a trip to the Republic of the Congo cost?

As a safari destination, the Republic of the Congo offers exclusive luxury in remote areas. Naturally, this exclusivity and luxury comes at a premium.

By utilizing scheduled charters in and out of Brazzaville, you can plan a trip that is as short as three nights (although longer is recommended to really explore the area). Monthly special offers are sometimes available for solo travelers.

While the country itself is relatively cheap, to maximize experiences in hard-to-reach locations, such as gorilla trekking in Odzala , we recommend budgeting a minimum of $15,000 per person for a seven-night journey.

The best things to do in the Republic of the Congo

Our favorite way to experience the country is getting deep in the rainforest. Journey from camp to camp in Odzala National Park by vehicle , foot , or kayak , and learn all about the area’s wealth of history and ecological information.

Your guides can take you hiking through jungle trails, tracking gorilla on foot, or cover more ground by motorized boat . However you explore here, it’s all about getting out of the car and moving.

Touring Brazzaville with an expert guide and meeting the city’s sapeurs is one of the best things to do in the Republic of the Congo.

Wildlife in Congo

Western lowland gorillas are the highlight for most travelers in the Congo. With that in mind, you may also encounter other various primates including wild chimpanzee and the putty nose monkey. Forest elephants , bongo, forest buffalo , sitatunga, spotted hyena , red river hog, and even hippos can also be found.

Bird lovers will have the chance to spot the African grey parrot, the green pigeon, and other rare birds. The area also boasts over 400 species of butterflies!

If you decide to head to Sangha, you can trek mangabey, spend time with the onsite pangolin researchers, and possibly find the rare picathartes bird.

Republic of Congo

Republic of congo travel.

Not to be outshone by its ‘Big Brother’ ( Democratic Republic of the Congo – DRC ), the Republic of the Congo has claimed a spot in the top echelons of safari experiences in Africa. Three-quarters of the country is covered in the lush, dense Congo rainforest and bordered by the DRC,  Gabon , Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Angolan enclave of Cabinda.

For those seeking to discover an alluring wildlife wonderland, the rich biodiversity of the “Second Lung of the World” is enclosed in a handful of national parks with Odzala, Conkouati, and the Lefini Faunal Reserve featuring most prominently. They offer encounters with unique species like the famed western lowland gorilla and hundreds of more species of different orders. The mighty Congo river glistens brightly across the country’s landscape. Originating in the highlands of the East African rift and crossing the equator twice, it snakes its way for more than 4,500 kilometres—making it the second-longest river in Africa and the ninth in the world—before ending in the Atlantic ocean.

Brazzaville stands proudly as the safe capital city of the Republic of the Congo. Here, visitors can explore the buzzing markets and purchase a variety of local souvenirs, as well as discover the country’s colonial history. International visitors to the Republic of the Congo are serviced by flights into  Brazzaville . Upon arrival, it is best to make use of pre-arranged transport and services by recognised operators as vehicle hire, with a driver, is expensive.

Congo

Despite  gorilla trekking  being the most popular attraction when planning a safari to the Republic of the Congo, the country has a variety of other activities on offer. Other natural wonders to marvel at include the Diosso Gorge that offers expansive views of the countryside, as well as the Loufoulakari Falls, situated at the confluence of the Congo Loufoulakari River. Some of the biggest tiger fish in the world can be reeled in at the Tiger Fish Congo Camp.

The capital of Brazzaville sometimes referred to as the ‘Little Paris of Africa’ provides an abundance of cultural experiences, from cheerful markets to delving deeper into the varied history. Travellers can also venture to Linzolo where the first Catholic Church was constructed by French priests in 1882. For a laid-back experience, an excursion to the seaside city of Pointe Noire is a must. Travellers can sip on a sundowner while taking in the sights and sounds of the Atlantic ocean.

It is in the Congo Basin, spanning the Republic of the Congo and five other countries in west equatorial Africa, that visitors will set eyes on the wild and wonderful creatures that are dependant on this natural phenomena for their existence. Unspoilt and genuinely wild safaris can be undertaken in Odzala National Park, Louana National Park, Conkouati Douli National Park, Nouabale-Ndoki National Park, and Lefini Faunal Reserve.

The most priceless of wildlife experiences are beyond question getting a glimpse into the unique world of the endangered western lowland gorilla. The posturing of the older yet still impressive silverbacks will be one for the memory bank.

During a trekking expedition, visitors are also bound to sight forest elephants and buffalos among the abundance of trees. More than 700 bird species and 892 different butterflies, of which 20 are endemic, sweep and dart across the skies of the Republic of the Congo. Closer to the country’s spectacular coastline, marine animals like whales, dolphins, and sea turtles are regularly spotted.

International tourism in the Republic of the Congo is seeing an upwards curve and there has subsequently been a marked improvement in accommodation facilities. Most of the more luxurious facilities, however, can still only be found in the larger towns. When venturing outside the concrete jungle, various eco-friendly camps have been developed.

Congo Safari Travel Guide, Tours & Holidays

Despite the prolonged instability over the years in the Congo tourism industry , the security of Congo is bound to improve, especially for open tourist attractions.

So many tourists have always wanted to visit Virunga, but due to the instability in the country, many have backed out and visited neighboring countries instead.

This has been a major hindrance for Congo gorilla trekking tours, except for those that trek with lowland gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega National Park.

You can combine your Congo safari tours with Uganda safaris , Rwanda Safaris , Kenya safaris , Tanzania safaris and Zanzibar beach holidays .

Also check out our combo gorilla trips .

Gorilla Tours and Safaris in Congo

Gorilla Tours in Congo

Besides the actual experience, the best reason to book your gorilla tours in Congo is the fact that you will spend less on your gorilla trekking safari .

A gorilla permit in Congo costs $400 each, which is $200 lower than Uganda’s $700 price and $1100 lower than Rwanda’s $1500 price.

Accommodation in Congo is also affordable unless you book the luxury gorilla trekking lodges like Mikeno Lodge affiliated with Virunga National Park.

In general, Congo is an inexpensive gorilla trekking destination .

Trekking gorillas in Congo is also one way of conserving mountain gorillas.

Over the years, many mountain gorillas in Virunga National Park have been poached for various reasons like bush meat and medicine, causing their numbers to decrease.

The remaining ones are often fearful of humans.

When you go gorilla trekking in Congo , the money you spend on gorilla trekking permits is used to conserve these primates and help their population grow.

You can support Virunga by booking gorilla trips.

You do not always have to donate to them; trekking Congo gorillas is an easy way to show your support.

Where to go for a Gorilla safari in Congo

Virunga National Park

Virunga National Park Travel

Virunga National Park is the number one destination for trekking mountain gorillas in Congo.

There are eight habituated mountain gorilla families in the park where tourists can trek.

Your gorilla trekking adventure in Virunga starts with booking the permit in advance, ideally three months before arriving in the country.

This can be done through Virunga National Park or a trusted local travel agent.

Once you obtain a gorilla permit, you can then plan the dates of your flights and travel to Congo.

Gorilla trekking typically starts with a briefing at the park headquarters early in the morning.

Visitors are allocated to a gorilla family based on factors like age and physical ability.

The ranger guide will lead you through the rain-forests in search of the gorilla family.

When you find the gorilla family, you will have about an hour to observe mountain gorilla behaviors and take photos.

Kahuzi-Biega National Park Travel

Kahuzi-Biega National Park is the best place for trekking eastern lowland gorillas in Congo.

Gorilla trekking in Kahuzi-Biega National Park begins early in the morning with a briefing at Tshivanga Visitor Center, located just outside the park entrance.

A ranger will guide you through established trails in search of the gorilla group.

Similar to mountain gorilla trekking, visitors are given an hour to observe and enjoy the presence of these magnificent creatures.

Maiko National Park Travel

Maiko National Park is home to both eastern lowland gorillas and western lowland gorillas .

However, it’s important to note that the gorilla groups in this park are still in the process of habituation, which means they are not yet fully accustomed to human presence and may not be available for trekking by tourists at this time.

Trekking the Bonobo Chimpanzees of Congo

3 Days Bonobo Chimpanzee Trekking Safari

Chimpanzees are divided into two species: Bonobo chimpanzees and Common chimpanzees .

Although they are similar, they have a few differences in terms of habitat, size, behaviors, and diet.

The Bonobo, also known as dwarf or gracile chimpanzees and sometimes referred to as the Pygmy chimpanzee, is a species of chimpanzee that inhabits the primary and secondary forests of the Congo basin in the Democratic Republic of Congo, located in Central Africa.

Bonobo chimpanzees are distinguished from common chimpanzees by their parted long hair on the head, tail tuft, black face, pink lips, and longer legs.

There has been little research about Bonobo chimpanzees due to their timidity, which has been exacerbated by the political instability in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The estimated population of Bonobos in the wilderness is between 30,000 to 50,000 individuals, categorizing them as an endangered species.

Bonobos have been observed to resolve conflicts through sexual contact, which is a unique behavior compared to other species of chimpanzees that may resort to violence when outsiders encroach on their territories.

Congo Safaris – What to Expect!

Congo Safaris - What to Expect!

If you are looking for an affordable gorilla trekking destination, Congo should be at the top of your bucket list.

Congo gorilla permits cost only $400 each, and in some scenarios, you might be subject to further discounts.

These permits are the cheapest compared to Uganda’s $700 and Rwanda’s $1500.

The mountain gorillas are the same, and I would say the trek in Congo is much more interesting because of Virunga’s scenery.

Congo gorilla trekking hasn’t been experienced by many, making the experience feel more raw.

The gorillas are less visited and won’t try to hide away from humans, unlike in other gorilla tracking destinations.

For all our trips, you arrive through Kigali in Rwanda and drive to Gisenyi .

The following morning is when you cross to Goma and drive to Kibati Patrol Post to commence your Congo gorilla trekking experience .

From here, you can decide to trek and cross over to Rwanda afterward or spend a night in Goma.

Send us an inquiry today , and we shall tailor your dream Congo safari.

Best Time to See Gorillas in Congo

Best Time to See Gorillas in Congo

Congo is a tropical country, hence it experiences two dry seasons and two wet seasons in a year.

Although the park can be visited all year round, some months are better than others.

For example, from June to August and December to February are the best months for visiting the park when the roads leading to the park are in good condition, and the trekking trails are not very slippery and muddy.

Congo Gorilla Permits

When thinking of traveling to Africa to trek mountain gorillas, you need to obtain a gorilla permit that will give you permission to trek gorillas.

Gorilla permits must be booked in advance, at least 3 months prior to arrival, to avoid disappointment at the last moment.

Persons under the age of 15 years will not be allowed to trek gorillas.

You can use a trusted local travel agent that will help with the whole process of getting a permit, transportation, and accommodation as well.

For travelers on a strict budget but who would like to trek mountain gorillas in Africa, Congo offers the cheapest mountain gorilla permits compared to other gorilla trekking destinations.

Gorilla permits cost $400 for foreign non-residents, $200 for foreign residents, and $250 for Congolese citizens.

Congo also offers tourists discounted low season gorilla permits from March 15th to May 15th and from October 15th to December 15th.

Discounted gorilla permits cost $200 per person per trekking for foreign non-residents.

Permits once sold are not returnable except in occasions where the tourists get sick in the morning prior to trekking.

Congo Gorilla Families

Congo Gorilla Families

Mountain gorillas live in groups of 5 to several individuals, dominated by an adult silverback.

These groups have been habituated so that tourists can have the chance to trek mountain gorillas peacefully.

Gorilla groups in Congo can be seen below:

Kabirizi Gorilla Family

Kabirizi gorilla family was initially called Ndugutse mountain gorilla family, though the name was later changed to Kabirizi in loving memory of ICCN director called Kabirizi who died in a traffic accident in the 1990s.

At the time of habituation, the group was dominated by Silverback Ndugutse, who later died in crossfire between the Rwandese rebels and the Congo army within the park in 1997.

Kabirizi is currently facing challenges from another silverback known as Masibo.

Humba Gorilla Family

Humba gorilla family was formed when silverback Humba left Rugendo mountain gorilla family with six members to start up his own in 1998.

Humba expanded his family, and they reached 16 members until 2014 when his brother Nyakamwe left with 10 members to make his own family.

Nyakamwe Gorilla Family

Nyakamwe gorilla family is one of the newly habituated gorilla groups in Virunga national park.

The group was formed when silverback Nyakamwe split from Humba gorilla family to start his own family.

This group can be trekked from Bukima areas of the park.

Bageni Gorilla Family

Bageni gorilla family is one of the interesting gorilla groups to visit while at Virunga because they are many in number.

The group was formed when silverback Bageni split off from Kabirizi mountain gorilla family to start his own.

Munyaga Gorilla Family

Munyaga gorilla family was also one of the lucky groups to have twins in the park although the twins died before barely reaching their first birthday.

The group is dominated by Silverback Gasore, and another interesting factor about this group is the bald-headed silverback known as Kadogo.

Rugendo Gorilla Family

Rugendo gorilla family is one of the early habituated gorilla groups at Virunga national park in 1989.

The group derives its name from silverback Rugendo that dominated the group at the time of habituation.

The group is now dominated by Bukima the silverback, and the former dominating silverback Rugendo is known to have fathered a lot of silverbacks now leading gorilla groups in Virunga.

Lulengo Gorilla Family

Lulengo gorilla family was first known as Masekura gorilla family, but the name was later changed in loving memory of the park technical director who died on a land mine.

Lulengo the dominating silverback of the group stepped in to dominate after the death of his father Rugabo who was killed by poachers.

Lulengo mountain gorilla family can be trekked around Jomba area near the Uganda-Congo border.

Mapuwa Gorilla Family

Mapuwa gorilla family was part of Rugendo gorilla family until silverback Mapuwa decided to take two females with him to start up his own family.

Mapuwa is known for being ambitious, fighting other gorilla groups to grab members to add up to his family.

He one time engaged in a fight with silverback Pilipili and took away all his members, leaving him a lone silverback.

Birding Safaris in Congo

Birding in Congo

With over 1,189 bird species recorded in Congo, there is no better destination we can recommend than this.

These species include endemic birds, those introduced by humans, and accidental species residing in swamps, mountains, forests, and various national parks such as Virunga National Park and Kahuzi-Biega.

With the guidance of an expert birder, some of the bird species you may encounter include Guineafowl, flamingos, geese, ducks, waterfowl, pigeons, nightjars, bustards, turacos, finfoots, thick-knees, plovers, Egyptian plovers, cranes, jacanas, jaegers, skimmers, pratincoles, Anhinga, storks, pelicans, shoebills, shags, hammerkops, egrets, secretary birds, herons, ibises, eagles, osprey, barn-owls, mousebirds, trogons, starlings, wood hoopoes, kingfishers, hornbills, rollers, bee-eaters, bulbuls, African barbets, pittas, honeyguides, falcons, new world parrots, green broadbills, shrikes, reed warblers, tree creepers, and drongos, among others.

Birding safaris are best conducted during the morning hours or in the afternoon with the guidance of an experienced birder.

This is one of the most affordable safari options in the country and can be done either independently or as a combination with any other safari.

Best Time to Visit Congo for Travel Holidays

3 Days Mount Nyiragongo Volcano Hiking & Climbing Tour Congo

The best months for your gorilla safaris in Congo are January to February and May through to September.

The other months are rainy, and given Congo’s road network, visiting during the rainy season is not advisable.

While you can’t predict the weather during your Congo safari, you can reduce uncertainty by booking your safari for the dry months.

Trekking gorillas during the rainy season can be challenging as terrains become muddy and slippery, extending the duration of your hike.

Weather is a crucial consideration when planning your safari in Congo.

You don’t want to trek in the rain, especially in mountainous areas.

Sometimes, rain can persist for the entire day, leaving you drenched during your trek.

Opting for the dry months will spare you from these challenges.

Democratic Republic of Congo

Democratic Republic of Congo Safaris

Introducing democratic republic of congo.

A destination for pioneering travellers, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), offers something truly remarkable for the avid explorer. A complicated region with a huge amount to offer, exploring the eastern edge offers explorers a real life glimpse into the heart of Africa. The DRC is a complex but rewarding destination; a pocket of biodiversity, home to about a quarter of the world's remaining mountain gorillas.

Diverse to its core, DRC is knitted together in a vast array of dense jungles, volcanic peaks, raging rivers and open savannah pains. Home to the oldest national park on the African continent (Albert National Park, now Virunga National Park), DRC is one of the last bastions of ‘real Africa’, putting the modern day explorer through their paces.

As a destination, the DRC is at the forefront of pioneering conservation efforts. Huge investment has gone into the training of the park rangers, ongoing support is given to those widows that have lost their loved ones in the line of duty of protecting the park, and as a result improved security and an increase in wildlife numbers is clear. Whilst improvements have been seen, the challenge is to now expand the boundaries of the park and effect stability throughout the wider region.

Why choose Natural World Safaris for your DRC Safari?

We originally started back in 2005 as World Primate Safaris. Our CEO and Founder Will Bolsover spent many years in the jungles of Central and East Africa, working in the gorilla parks of Uganda and Rwanda, the Eastern Lowland Gorilla and Mountain Gorilla parks of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and tracking the chimpanzees of Tanzania in Mahale and Gombe. He was the first person to lead gorilla treks in Gabon working with Emmanuel de Merode who now runs Virunga National Park in DRC.

Our clients will be accompanied by experienced guides with in-depth knowledge of the region and the issues it faces. It is possible to visit the DRC safely with careful planning and travellers will be accompanied by armed park rangers at all times. Our on-the-ground contacts keep a close eye on the security situation and new, welcoming facilities offer excellent places to stay for pioneering visitors.

How much does Democratic Republic of Congo cost?

For a 7-day safari in the DRC, we recommend a starting price of $5000 per person. This will generally include accommodation at three different lodges, transfers and private guides.

The drc safari experience.

Traveling in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) can be challenging due to various factors such as poor road infrastructure, limited transportation options, and security concerns in some areas. Most visitors arrive in the DRC by air, with international flights serving Kinshasa and Lubumbashi. Domestic flights are also available to some destinations, such as Goma and Kisangani. Once in the country, transportation options include buses, taxis, and private drivers. However, road conditions can be poor and unpredictable, with some areas only accessible by 4WD vehicles. In some areas, river transport is also available. It's important to note that security can be a concern in some parts of the DRC, particularly in the east.

You may wish to include the following in your DRC itinerary:

  • Lava Lakes - Spend the night at the top of Nyiragongo, sleeping on the crater edge to one of the most active lava lakes in the world.
  • Gorilla and Chimpanzee Trekking - The DRC is home to a significant population of endangered mountain gorillas and chimpanzees, which can be seen on guided treks in Virunga National Park and Kahuzi-Biega National Park.
  • Hiking - The DRC boasts stunning landscapes, including the Virunga Mountains and Nyiragongo volcano, which can be explored on hiking tours.
  • River Safaris - The Congo River is the second-longest river in Africa and offers opportunities for boat tours and wildlife viewing.
  • Cultural Tours - The DRC has a rich cultural heritage, with many traditional communities living in rural areas. Visitors can take cultural tours to learn about local customs, music, and cuisine.
  • City Tours - The capital city Kinshasa is a vibrant and bustling metropolis, with attractions such as the National Museum of Congo and the Kinkole Fish Market.

Where to stay in DRC ?

The Democratic Republic of Congo offers a range of accommodation options for travellers, from budget-friendly guesthouses to luxurious safari lodges. For those visiting Virunga National Park, Mikeno Lodge offers a luxurious and eco-friendly stay, with comfortable rooms, gourmet dining, and stunning views of the park's landscapes. Other options include Bukima Tented Camp, which is located near the gorilla trekking starting point, and offers a rustic but comfortable camping experience. In Kahuzi-Biega National Park, visitors can stay at the Orchids Safari Club, a charming and eco-friendly lodge that offers comfortable rooms, delicious food, and a peaceful atmosphere. Another option is the Lwiro Primates, a research centre and guesthouse that offers simple but comfortable accommodation, as well as the opportunity to learn about the park's wildlife and conservation efforts. In Kinshasa, visitors can choose from a range of hotels, including the luxurious Pullman Kinshasa Grand Hotel, the historic Memling Hotel, and the budget-friendly Beatrice Hotel.

While gorilla trekking can offer an incredible and unique experience, it's important to prioritise safety and be well-informed before considering such a trip. It's recommended to stay updated on travel advisories from your government, consult with reputable tour operators who have experience in the region, and follow the advice of local authorities and guides during the trek.

Keep in mind that the security situation in the DRC can change, and it's advisable to have a flexible travel plan and be prepared for unexpected changes. If you are considering gorilla trekking in the DRC, it's essential to conduct thorough research, assess the current situation, and make an informed decision based on safety considerations.

What is the currency of the DRC?

Do you need a visa for the DRC

Most visitors to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) require a visa to enter the country. The specific visa requirements can vary based on your nationality, purpose of visit, and the length of your stay. We recognise that it can be quite overwhelming when starting to plan a trip to africa. there are so many different destinations to choose from, many many different parks and game reserves, and literally thousands of beautiful lodges, it can be difficult to know what is right for you. this is where we come in we have classified each of our tours into four categories to give you an idea of the types of travel style available, so we can help you narrow down your perfect trip.

  • Budget Smart  – These tours offer basic en-suite accommodation, often in walk-in tents or small rondavel style cabins. Accommodations are often located outside of main areas/national parks and tours will be on larger vehicles (9-12 people on safari drives).

About the camp

The hunting camp consists of 3 solid lodges. Each hut has its own air conditioner, bathroom, and toilet. Electricity and satellite phone are also available. Fishing for the Naked Tigerfish can be arranged in the Sangha River, which is 2 hours away from the camp after the hunt has come to an end. The large Tigerfish is known to weigh up to 80kg. and a Piranha-like bite. This is your chance to hunt in the newly discovered Congo-Brazzaville for exotic plains game species, Buffalo-Dwarf and Duiker. This hunt will take place in Northern Congo. This area has been logged in the past, so there is an extensive network of roads to facilitate hunting. The hunt begins the day after your arrival from tall jackals along the Mokoro River or logging roads. The other methods of hunting are stalking and habituation. Bongos can be hunted by searching open areas and roads, as they have a habit of coming out through openings to feed on newly emerged grass at the edges of open areas. This is one of the few areas in Africa where Bongo can be caught using this method. A large amount of logging roads from previous concessions allows for this relatively easy method of hunting no Bongo. For Sitatunga hunting, boats are used to access water and swampy areas that the Sitatunga frequents. You will see Gorillas and a wide variety of exotic wildlife on this Congo hunting safari.

Congo Safaris

Congo Safaris are amazing tour packages that any traveler can decide to book just in case they are interested in gorilla trekking, mountain Hiking, cultural tours in Congo and other amazing safari activities.  The Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the most diverse and amazing countries to visit in Africa. Located in Central Africa, the country is named after the Congo River that flows throughout the country. The Congo has a total area of 2,344,858 square kilometers making it the second-largest country in the continent after Algeria. The country is bordered by up to 9 countries say Uganda , Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, Sudan, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo and Angola.

The Congo has a lot of attractions to offer to travelers, especially to travelers that love to discover and explore: the Congo has this untapped and wildness plus unmatched biodiversity that is very rear to find in most African countries, it is indeed a gem worth a visit. Notwithstanding the on and off volatile situation in the country, the country has a number of tourists that flock it.

Travelers who go on Congo Safaris oftentimes go to do mountain gorilla trekking in Virunga National Park but there is a lot that the country has to offer including hiking the active volcano of Nyiragongo that has a lava lake at its peak, chimpanzee trekking, lowland gorilla trekking in Kahuzi Beiga National Park , game drives, among so many activities.

National Parks in the Congo

The national parks of the Congo offer a wildness that is unmatched in Africa. From the jungle forests of the Virunga National Park that are home to some of the rare and endangered primates like the mountain gorillas to the savanna plains of parks like Maiko National Park that offer splendid game viewing options, you will have a true African safari while on a Congo Safari.

Virunga National Park

This is the top destination in Cong o for one to enjoy their Congo Safaris tours . Virunga National Park that is formerly known as Albert National Park lies in the North-East of the Democratic Republic of the Congo bordering the Rwenzori Mountains of Uganda in the north and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park in the East. The park includes part of Lake Edward , the Semliki River valley, parts of the Rwindi, Ishasha and Rutshuru valleys. Established in 1925, the Virunga National Park is Africa’s very first and therefore oldest national park and it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. The park is managed by the Congolese Institute of Nature and Conservation.

The Virunga National Park has a unique and active chain of volcanoes that are rich in the diversity of inhabitants. Some of the prominent volcanoes include the Nyiragongo mountain that has a lava lake at its peak, mount Sabinyo which is the oldest of all, Nyamuragira which is actually an active volcano and mount Mikeno.

Attractions and Activities in Virunga National Park

Mountain Gorillas

Mountain gorillas are one of the most selling activities in most Congo Tours. Doing a Congo Safari without visiting these endangered mountain gorillas on a gorilla trekking experience in Virunga National Park renders your safari incomplete. With over 200 mountain gorillas, the Virunga National Park has eight habituated mountain gorillas that travelers can trek with the very largest and most common gorilla family being the Kabirizi that has up to 32 members.

congo star safaris

Irrespective of the gorilla group that you are trekking, gorilla trekking experience usually starts with a briefing at the park headquarters early in the morning. After the brief, trekkers embark on the hike to find these endangered mountain gorillas with the help and protection of the rangers. Once they are encountered, travelers are allowed up to one hour to be with them. Travelers are advised to keep in mind the gorilla trekking rules and regulations during the gorilla trekking experience. The hike back to the park headquarters is usually less strenuous but scenic. Gorilla tracking permits in Congo cost only $400 and they can be purchased at the park headquarters but because of the high demand for gorilla trekking, travelers are advised to book in advance to secure your permit availability.

Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage

Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage is the only orphanage center for mountain gorillas in the world that was started in 2010 after there was need to rehabilitate, treat and safeguard the mountain gorilla babies that were left behind after the killing of their elders by rebels in 2007 when the park was used as a hideout for rebels. The orphanage has since taken in a number of orphaned gorillas and also acts as a center for rehabilitation and treating of the hurt lowland gorillas from Kahuzi Beiga National Park that are rescued from poachers and animal traffickers. These are treated and then transferred to the Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Centre which is a center for the orphaned lowland gorillas.

The Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage offers a rear opportunity for travelers to have an amazing time with these orphaned gorillas as they interact with them and learn of their behaviors. The gorillas in this orphanage are very welcoming and are very attached to humans as you will see them with their caretakers. The Senkwekwe gorilla orphanage is located in Virunga national park and travelers that would like to visit or volunteer could inquire at the park headquarters of availability.

Chimpanzees

Chimpanzees are another kind of primates that can be found in Virunga National Park . A Chimpanzee habituation experience in the Virunga will see you hiking the jungles of the park in search for these lively primates under the guidance of the researchers and the game rangers. They are oftentimes playful and noisy as they jump from one tree to another in search for food. Chimpanzee habituation was opened to tourists in 2014 and it starts very early in the morning at 5:30 when the chimps awake and start their search for food. Given their mobility, the chimpanzee habituation experience gives travelers a thrilling and more adventurous encounter. Chimpanzee habituation experience permits in the Virunga National Park cost about $100 only.

Nature Walks

The great diversity in plant and animal life of the Virunga National Park is unbeatable in the whole continent, it, therefore, makes nature walks an interesting and wonderful experience for travelers that they should not miss out on. Taking guided nature walks through secure sections of the park rewards travelers with magnificent scenery and views of landscapes with wonderful sights of volcanoes like the Nyiragongo. While on these nature walks, travelers should be on the lookout for the varied wildlife of primates, mammals, birdlife and a whole lot more.

Mount Nyiragongo

This is stratovolcano whose summit has the world’s largest lava lake with boiling magma and the volcano stands at 6,500ft. Hiking the Nyiragongo for the sole purpose of viewing the lava lake has seen a great number of tourists visiting Virunga National Park. Treks to the summit of the Nyiragongo active volcano begin at Kibati which is about a 30 minutes’ drive from Goma. The rangers lead the hike to the summit and there are porters that can be hired to help you with your luggage such that you have a less burden of stuff while hiking.

congo star safaris

The hike to the top takes about a day and travelers get to spend the night at some shelters at the top of the volcano and then descend the next day which is actually faster as it takes only 3 hours at the very most. Travelers should carry heavy or warm clothes for the summit is very cold- don’t be deceived by the ava lake that it would be warm.

The Batwa Community

The Batwa pygmies are a community of people that were originally forest dwellers who majorly depended on the forest for their livelihood- they are the only known people that ever co-existed with the endangered mountain gorillas and all the other wildlife of the Virunga massif without tampering with them. They were however evicted from the national parks and relocated to nearby communities where they do live though unhappy for they found the jungles their home. The Batwa, therefore, share their life story and skills with those travelers that would like to through the Batwa cultural trail that sees them demonstrating their way of life say how they collected wild honey, hunting skills that they used, the fruits that they depended on plus the various plants that were medicinal to them. They also share on how they cooked and made a fire from just a stick, their dances, and very sad songs that they sing at the end of the trail will leave you mesmerized. Visiting them could prove worthwhile as the funds that are raised go to the education fund for the Batwa children.

Other mammals that can be found in Virunga National Park include the golden monkeys, red-tailed monkey, Dent’s Mona monkey, Central African red colobus, olive baboon, grey-cheeked mangabey, African bush elephants, hippopotamus, giant forest hog, waterbuck, common warthog and African bush elephants among so any others.

Kahuzi Biega National Park

After mountain gorilla trekking in Virunga National Park and the Nyiragongo hike to the lava lake summit, the next best tourist attraction that most tourists ask for in the Congo is the Eastern lowland gorillas and Lwiro Chimpanzee tracking in Kahuzi Biega National Park . Kahuzi Biega National Park is the only place that has the eastern lowland gorillas that can be trekked with Maiko National Park but does not give the option of trekking.

Kahuzi Biega National Park, with a size of 2,316 square miles, lies near the border of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo just next to Lake Kivu in the town of Bukavu. Established in 1970, the park is one of the largest national parks in the country. The park was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the 1980s due to its vast forest and unique mammal species. The name Kahuzi Biega is got from the two dormant volcanoes found in the park edges- Mount Kahuzi and Mount Biega.

The park is managed by the Congolese Institute of Conservation of Nature in partnership with the World Wide Fund and the Wildlife Conservation Society. These face a number of challenges among them the ever-volatile situations that the area faces.

About 137 mammal species and 350 bird species have been recorded to be in the park. The Eastern Lowland gorilla is the most sought after in the park, and these lowland gorillas can be found in two sectors of the park-the highlands and the lowlands.

Major attractions of Kahuzi Biega National Park include the abundant flora that are best seen and experienced when on a nature walk, the wildlife of the park that includes primates, mammals, birds, butterflies and so many more are all attractions worth visiting. Mountain Kahuzi and Biega, waterfalls and a lot more are also worth a visit. The biggest attraction of the park, however, are the Eastern lowland gorillas that tourists travel all the way to visit.

Activities in Kahuzi Biega National Park

Kahuzi Biega is one of Congo’s hidden gems that is less visited and therefore remains relatively virgin with lush green forests, great mountainous landscapes, lakes, and rivers. It is another amazing place to enjoy one's Congo Safaris. The park, when visited, gives you a true African wilderness feeling. Some of the things that attract tourists to Kahuzi Biega are;

Eastern lowland gorilla trekking

This is the reason that most travelers visiting the park go to do. The Eastern lowland gorillas are larger than the mountain gorillas and are also near extinction due to poaching and animal trafficking plus the wars that sometimes wage in these areas. As of 2013, there were 145 eastern lowland gorillas recorded in the highland sector of the park which was a great decline from the 600 that were recorded in 1990.

congo star safaris

Eastern lowland gorilla trekking involves hiking through the dense tropical forest and highlands of Kahuzi Biega National Park in search for the near-extinct eastern lowland gorillas. The trek can take between thirty minutes to up to six hours and travelers are allowed only one hour with them once encountered in which time they are advised to observe the way of life of these gorillas. From the dominant silverback looking out for the safety of his family to the juveniles who play around and may even approach you. Travelers are advised to follow the instructions of the rangers and guides at all times. Permits cost only $400.

Mountain Hiking

The hike to Mount Kahuzi offers breathtaking views of the town of Bukavu and Lake Kivu while enjoying your Congo Safaris tour. Reaching the summit takes about four hours and three hours to descend. Mount Biega, however, takes only six hours to both ascend and descend. The vegetation of both mountains is different. Mount Bugulumiza, at 2400 meters is another mountain worth a climb as it gives awesome views of the surrounding landscape including the mountains of Kahuzi and Biega.

Lwiro Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Located in the south east of the Congo, the sanctuary is close to the park. The center takes care of the orphaned chimpanzees and other small primates that lose their parents to poaching and animal trafficking mostly. The rehabilitation center has since its inception been named as the third most prominent site by the IUCN for its role played in the conservation of chimpanzees in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The sanitary currently protects approximately 105 monkeys of different species along with parrots, turtles, and porcupines.

congo star safaris

Lwiro chimpanzee sanctuary is a haven for chimpanzee lovers as it is a place houses these chimpanzees that are slowly recovering from the trauma. Visiting the chimps here will give you an opportunity to get close to them in the field and also take part in their conservation. Volunteer opportunities are available where you can get to learn of primates.

Bird watching

Congo Birding Safaris are one of the most interesting activities and one can enjoy their best when exploring Lwiro Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Morning and evening birding schedules are scheduled every day where the birders have an opportunity to spot various bird species like the African green broadbill. Binoculars could come in handy.

Nature walks

There are well-established trails that take travelers to see various sceneries and wildlife including primates and birds. Marais Musisi Trail and Tshibati waterfalls trails go through swamps, bamboo forests, and three different but beautiful waterfalls.

Maiko National Park

Congo Safari tours keep getting better and better and when you visit Maiko National Park, you will experience the safari of a lifetime. Maiko National Park is one of the best conservation parks of the Eastern lowland gorillas that find the park a natural habitat. The park stretches to cover an area of 10,400 square kilometers and it extends into three-state provinces of Nord Kivu, Orientale and Mainema provinces. The park was created in 1949 and it inhabits unique wildlife species such as the Eastern lowland gorillas , the Okapi, forest elephants and the Congo peacock. The park is the right place for travelers that are after exploration of the jungle. Some of the tourist activities that Maiko National Park has to offer include;

 Wildlife viewing

The park has untampered vegetation cover that still gives any traveler a true wilderness impression. This impressive vegetation cover harbors a variety of animal species among them the forest elephants, the Okapis, Congo peacock, leopards, aquatic genet, the eastern chimps and lowland gorillas along with so many more you should discover when at the park. The variety and quantity of the wildlife in Maiko National Park makes a wildlife viewing safari amazingly unforgettable.

Given the park’s impressive vegetation, nature walks are a must-do through clearly created trails. Nature walks are a good way to discover and learn of the park plus what it has to offer. Walking through the thickly forested wilderness of Maiko and on the river banks of River Oslo and Lindi, be keen to sight a number of wildlife and birds plus butterflies.

With the vegetation cover of the park, be sure to have a good sight of a number of bird species. Broadbills, Pitas, sparrows, turacos, egrets, kingfishers among so many other birds are what you should look out for. A good pair of binoculars is a must carry.

Maiko National Park has over 800 eastern lowland gorillas but gorilla trekking is not available. If a traveler would like to have an Eastern lowland gorilla trekking experience, Kahuzi Biega is the best place to do it from. Gorilla trekking was banned from Maiko after a gorilla attacked a tourist.

The Democratic Republic of Congo has a number of national parks that have a lot to offer much as they are untapped. Having a Congo Safaris planned out for you would see you discovering a lot more than you could imagine.

I will use them Again

Booked with them a budget trip last minute and was very happy with my trip around the west and south west of Uganda. Considering the money I paid for the trip, I was pleasantly surprised by the good standard of accommodation and food and the guides were courteous and professional. I would definitely consider using Karibu again and would not hesitate to recommend them.

It was an amazing experience

It was an amazing experience! My first interaction with anyone from the company was with Djino and I couldn't have met a more welcoming and nicer man than him. I can't say enough nice things about him. Our driver Peter not only is one of the most patient people as he waited for us to see everything we wanted to see and never driving off too early, but he is incredibly skilled at being able to spot animals far away. For example, he was able to spot a leopard in a tree that no one else would've known was there but after he pointed out the leopard, we were all able to see it. Our cook was also fabulous (and I'm a very hard person to feed because there are so many foods I don't like) and he worked really hard at making our culinary experiences good. It Started In Africa truly gave us an amazing experience and a wonderful vacation. Thank you!

Terrible experience. Stay away

Had a terrible experience with Baraka, sent me to climb a mountain without breakfast, food, enough water or a rain jacket, the guy never even sent me a proper itinerary. He is not a guide, just a broker who brings clients and match them with other vendors, he did not spend a day with me and the "guide" he sent me with barely spoke English and was only a driver. I had to cancel my trip with this company in one point and to find a different guide in the middle of Rwanda. Absolutely not recommended and I regret using this company for my Rwanda and Uganda trip.

Congo (DRC) Gorilla Trekking & Safari Tours

The name Congo evokes images of a vast tropical jungle cut through by the mysterious river for which it is named. Who hasn’t dreamed of setting foot there? Unfortunately, much of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the region’s largest country, is unsafe for travel. Virunga National Park, for instance, was open for mountain gorilla trekking and Nyiragongo volcano climbs for several years prior to closing in 2020, but it is unlikely to reopen anytime soon due to security concerns. The news is better from Kahuzi-Biega National Park, where eastern lowland gorillas can be tracked in the wild with relative ease as an outing from neighboring Rwanda.

6 Questions About Congo (DRC) Gorilla Trekking and Safari Tours

Ariadne van Zandbergen

Answered by

Ariadne van zandbergen.

congo star safaris

What are the main tourist attractions?

“The main attraction of Eastern DRC is gorilla trekking. The region is home to two subspecies of these endangered gentle giants. This includes the eastern lowland gorilla, which is endemic to the DRC (in other words, it occurs nowhere else in the world). The eastern lowland gorilla can only be tracked in Kahuzi-Biega National Park, a short distance northwest of Bukavu (a port city at the southern tip of Lake Kivu on the border with Rwanda). This activity is just as rewarding as visiting the better-known mountain gorillas. Indeed, some might say it is actually more so, as they are even larger than their mountain-dwelling cousins, and low visitor numbers at Kahuzi-Biega make for a more adventurous and less-touristy experience. Eastern DRC is also an important stronghold for mountain gorillas. These live on the bamboo-covered slopes of the Virunga Mountains, a scenic volcanic range that extends into Rwanda and Uganda. Unfortunately, although mountain gorilla trekking is offered in the other two countries, the Congolese portion of the Virungas (protected in Virunga National Park) has been closed to tourism since March 2020 and is likely to remain off-limits for the foreseeable future. When Virunga NP does reopen for gorilla trekking, other activities are likely to include climbs of volcanic Mt Nyiragongo, which contains the world’s largest lava lake, and relaxing on Lake Kivu’s beautiful Tchegera Island.”

How does gorilla trekking in DR Congo compare to other countries?

“The gorilla trekking experience in Kahuzi-Biega (and when it reopens, Virunga NP) is very similar to what is offered in Rwanda and Uganda. The same one-hour time limit to spend with the gorillas applies. However, as visitor numbers are still very low, the Kahuzi-Biega experience feels more exclusive and the setting is more remote. The number of permits allocated per gorilla group is only four to six (less than the eight permits allocated per group in Uganda and Rwanda). A big difference between trekking in Kahuzi-Biega and doing the same activity in Uganda or Rwanda is that you will be visiting eastern lowland gorillas as opposed to mountain gorillas. Based on recent reports, trekking conditions are generally easier in DRC than in Rwanda or Uganda, and you are unlikely to have to walk for more than an hour to locate a gorilla group. Last but not least, a gorilla trekking permit in DRC costs US$400 per person as opposed to US$700 in Uganda or US$1,500 in Rwanda.”

Is a DR Congo safari safe?

“Visiting Kahuzi-Biega has been considered safe for a few years now. In order to attract visitors to this park, security measures have been put in place to make a day or overnight return visit from Rwanda very straightforward and secure. That said, the DRC has a long history of political turbulence and unrest, and most other parts of the country, including Virunga NP, cannot be regarded as safe at the time of writing. Even where Kahuzi-Biega is concerned, the security situation might change, so check with your tour operator before booking.”

Can I extend my East African safari with a trip to Congo (DRC)?

“Most people don’t visit DRC as a stand-alone trip. Instead it makes a perfect extension to a classic safari in Kenya or Tanzania. A short flight from either gets you to Rwanda’s capital city Kigali. From there you can fly or arrange to be driven to the Rwandan border town of Kamembe (also known as Rusizi/Cyangugu), which lies on the Lake Kivu shore near the Congolese port city of Bukavu. Some operators offer gorilla trekking in Kahuzi-Biega as a day trip from Kamembe, while others will arrange overnight accommodations in Bukavu or closer to the park. A gorilla trek in DRC also slots well into an extended holiday in Rwanda, where you can go chimp trekking in Nyungwe National Park, which is very close to Kamembe and Bukavu. You can also enjoy a couple of nights in Akagera National Park, the country’s Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino) destination. Wildlife densities in Akagera are not comparable to the most famous parks in East Africa, but this off-the-beaten-track destination is incredibly scenic and rewarding in its own right.”

How much will a DR Congo safari cost?

“Most visitors to Kahuzi-Biega opt for a 3-day gorilla trekking package out of Rwanda’s capital city Kigali. This typically costs US$1,200 to US$1,500 per person. Another possibility is a 4-day package that also includes chimp trekking in Rwanda’s Nyungwe National Park, which you pass through on the way between Kigali and Kahuzi-Biega. This will add around US$600 to the price. A variety of longer tours incorporating a visit to Kahuzi-Biega are also available.”

What is the best time of the year to visit DR Congo?

“The best time to visit Eastern DRC is during the Dry season from June to September. The area has a very wet climate and it can rain at any time, but June to September is drier and the forest trails tend to be less slippery. March to April and October to November are the peaks of the short and long rains. The drier period between the long and short rains, from December to February, is a great time to travel too. It shouldn’t be too wet and there are very few visitors around at this time. Whenever you visit, make sure you bring lots of waterproof clothing, and be prepared to get wet a few times.”
