Located along the shore of Long Island Sound , Fairfield County is a short drive from New York City. Its boundaries include the towns of Greenwich, Danbury, Southbury, Stratford, Shelton, and Bridgeport, CT . Good restaurants, with a special cluster in the SoNo section of Norwalk, CT , a waterfront area with lots of hip restaurants and shops. Family attractions include Beardsley Zoo, Discovery Museum, and the Barnum Museum in Bridgeport, CT; Maritime Aquarium and the Stepping Stones Museum for Children in Norwalk, CT; and the Stamford Museum & Nature Center in Stamford, CT .

New Haven & South Central CT

North and east of the Fairfield region and also on Long Island Sound, New Haven, CT is home to Yale University , which is loved for its fine architecture and excellent science & art museums, including the Yale Center for British Art and the Yale University Art Gallery . New Haven calls itself the "birthplace of pizza in America" , with the pies served in old legendary pizzerias like Frank Pepe's Pizzeria Napoletana , Sally's Apizza and Modern Apizza . New Haven's downtown and harborfront are bustling with dining and cultural activities, and it is known and loved for its blossoming food truck offerings. As you move along the coast in either direction to the smaller cities and towns, alive with historic New England charm. Mystic Country & Eastern CT

See the world’s last remaining wooden whaling ship

At one time, the fleet of whaling ships regularly sailing in the Atlantic was 2,700. The very last of these, The Charles W. Morgan , can be seen at the Mystic Seaport Museum. It’s actually the largest maritime museum in the United States!

The ship, built in 1841, has the distinction of being the only wooden whale ship still afloat. There are a lot of great things to do in Mystic in general, so don’t miss it when looking for things to do in CT.

Be impressed at Gillette Castle 

Want to visit the epic stone castle of “Sherlock Holmes” high on a cliff? Yep, me too! Gillette Castle is well known among Connecticut attractions and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The actor William Gillette commissioned this home, and it was built in 1914. Gillette was most famous for portraying Sherlock Holmes, thus, the character has become quite attached to the castle.

Avid readers and bookworms (like me) will find heaven on earth at the Book Barn in Niantic, CT. Not only is this used bookstore MASSIVE, with approximately 500,000 books on their shelves, they also have adorable CATS walking around. I mean, this is probably the #1 thing to do in Connecticut as far as I’m concerned. 

Climb aboard the USS Nautilus

Have you ever wanted to tour a submarine? The Submarine Force Library & Museum is home to the USS Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear powered submarine. The self-guided tour of the Nautilus is free, so if you’re looking for places to go in CT with family, this would def be a budget friendly CT activity that would be remembered for years to come!

The largest indoor ropes course in the entire world is located in New Haven, CT. Perhaps surprisingly (and a bit oddly) it’s located at a furniture store!

There are more than 100 things to do at the IT Adventure Indoor Ropes Course , including a “liquid firework show (water show), double catwalk, crisscross angled rope ladders, zig-zag swinging beams, cargo nets, bridges, and so much more.”

This place looks Fun with a capital F, especially when you’re looking for things to do in CT indoors.

Visit the Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center

The Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center is a nonprofit educational center dedicated to the knowledge and celebration of indigienous cultures. It has been open since 1998 and is owned-and-operated by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe.

There’s a lot going on at this museum, which houses an auditorium, gallery, restaurant, classrooms, and plenty of exhibit space. This is the place to go to discover the history of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe and dive deeper into the area’s natural history as well.

Admire Roseland Cottage

Historic homes are a wonderful place to visit, allowing guests to step into the past. The pink-painted Roseland Cottage , located in Woodstock, is a Gothic Revivial home built in 1846. 

You can tour the house and gardens and see what summers were like for Henry and Lucy Bowen and their family; if you’re a fan of gorgeous gardens, add this to your list of things to do in CT in the summer !

The house is simply beautiful, and also boasts the oldest indoor bowling alley in the world. 

Ride a snowbike at Powder Ridge Park

Powder Ridge Park is a perfect place to go when you’re looking for fun things to do in Connecticut in winter . They also have plenty of summer activities, too!

In the winter, the unique thing not to be missed is snowbike riding. This unusual activity is a great way to enjoy the magic of the slopes if you’re not a skiier or snowboarder. It’s just like…riding a bike!

Learn stuff at the Connecticut Science Center

Science museums are a great idea for when you’re looking for what to do on a rainy day in CT: there’s so much to see and do. The Connecticut Science Center is no exception. In addition to exciting traveling exhibits there are over a dozen permanent exhibits, including Exploring Space, Butterfly Encounter, River of Life, Engineering Lab, and Rooftop Garden. Kids will be thrilled about all the interactive stuff that invites them to touch, jump, and even be LOUD (check out the Sight and Sound Exhibit). Definitely should be added to the list of things to do in CT for kids!

Eat some apizza

No, that’s not a typo. “Apizza” is New Haven-style pizza, and it has some pretty interesting distinctions. Check out this definitive guide to find the best place to sample apizza. This is a yummy Connecticut bucket list activity!

Revel in fall colors in Litchfield County

It’s no secret that fall in New England is spectacular. And Connecticut boasts its own fair share of gorgeous autumn foliage. Litchfield County is one of the best places to take in the fall color, with its rolling hills and pastoral scenes everywhere you look. 

Go ice skating at Bushnell Park

When winter arrives, Winterfest hits Hartford. In downtown Bushnell Park, an ice skating rink appears each year, where families can glide on the ice and enjoy one of the best winter activities there is. Best of all, the ice skating and skate rentals are totally free.

This is a unique offering that you don’t see often and it makes it possible for thousands of visitors to enjoy the rink each holiday season; would make a great addition to a list of ideas for fun dates in Connecticut!

Hop aboard Essex Steam Train

All aboard!!!! If you’re a train lover, you’ll want to check out the Essex Steam Train and Riverboat . This railroad dates back to the 20th century, while the actual tracks date back even further than that, and they offer a variety of different rides and events throughout the year.

Catch some live theatre

There is a great deal of excellent professional (and amateur) theatre in the state of Connecticut. Check out Goodspeed Opera House for Broadway-quality productions, Yale Repertory Theatre for some serious drama, and the Ivoryton Playhouse for fun summer stock shows.

Visit a Christmas tree farm

If you’re looking for a great way to experience Connecticut Christmas charm, consider a visit to a Christmas tree farm ! Not only can you pick out your next Christmas tree, but there are often all kinds of fun holiday activities like sleigh rides, hot chocolate sipping, wreath making and more.

Spend time at Bluff Point State Park

Bluff Point State Park is an 800-acre park on a largely undeveloped peninsula between the Poquonnock River and Mumford Cove. Here you’ll discover pleasant trails for biking and hiking, with views over Long Island Sound.

Keep your eyes peeled for plenty of avian wildlife, and if you’re into fishing, bring your poles. Potential species to be caught include bluefish, striped bass, summer and winter flounder, blackfish, and more. With a permit, you can also fish for shellfish here.

One of the things that attracts many visitors to New England is its historic buildings. If you enjoy historic homes, make your way to Old Wethersfield. There you’ll come upon CT’s largest historic district, with over 100 pre-Civil War-era homes. 

Escape to one of CT’s charming small towns

Small towns in New England are such special places. In Connecticut you can find many such villages and towns, perhaps even when you’re not looking for them. But to give you a few hints, here are a couple of the cutest small towns in Connecticut : Old Saybrook , Guilford, Kent, Storrs, and Simsbury.

Personally, I think Guilford is one of the cutest small towns in Connecticut and beyond!

Visit Hammonasset Beach State Park

This is actually the largest shoreline park in the state, and Hammonasset Beach State Park is an excellent CT destination if you’re interested in spectacular Long Island Sound views.

There’s more than just sandy beach at Hammonasset, too, with camping sites, bicycle rentals, and Meigs Point Nature Center , where you’ll find educational programs like nature walks, touch-tank programs, and craft workshops, designed to teach visitors about the natural history and wildlife of coastal Connecticut.

Eat at the cafe that invented the hamburger

Louis’ Lunch in New Haven has the true record: they are the birthplace of the hamburger sandwich and the Library of Congress says so. Grab a classic burger in this small, cute restaurant, but know that they only offer tomato, onion, and cheese so you get the burger’s true flavor; add this to your list of unique and fun experiences in CT!

Go lighthouse hopping

It should come as no surprise that Connecticut has lighthouses in abundance! You can tour some of them or view them from land or by water only in some cases. You may find that one particular lighthouse quickly becomes your favorite.

It might be surprising to you to learn that there are actually quite a few ghost towns in the Nutmeg State!

One of the most intriguing ghost towns in CT to explore is Gay City, and its conveniently now a protected state park so people are able to completely access this lost city!

Take a walk on the Niantic boardwalk

This walk isn’t very long, comprising just over 1 mile, but it’s a pleasant and relaxing place to take in views over Long Island Sound, and certainly one of the prettiest sights in Connecticut. Seriously, I think Niantic is such a darling little town on Long Island Sound!

Stroll downtown Milford

Okay, I absolutely adore Milford! This is such a cute Connecticut town, it definitely needs to be on your CT bucket list.

The Milford Green is one of the most historic greens in the region (and that’s actually saying quite a lot!) and the downtown area has lovely Milford Duck Pond with its very own little waterfall. This is just such a sweet place to explore and feels very quintessential New England.

Sample the delights at Jonathan Edwards Winery

Wine is, to me, one of my favorite parts of travel, if not life itself. The Jonathan Edwards Winery is a fabulous CT winery of a bicoastal nature: much of the harvest still comes from Wine Country itself, California’s Napa Valley.

Enjoy tastings and tours at this beautiful site and take home a bottle of your favorite to remember your Connecticut trip with, if you so choose.

Go camping in Pachaug State Forest

Get out in the wilderness in Connecticut’s largest state forest. Covering 24,000 acres, Pachaug State Forest presents countless opportunities to revel in the great outdoors.

There are several different campgrounds for pitching your tent (or parking your RV) and there is even a horse camp, so equestrians can enjoy the trails over several days. 

Visit the Connecticut Trolley Museum

One of the coolest things to do in Connecticut is to visit the Connecticut Trolley Museum, where you can ride a historic trolley before visiting the museum that showcases the history of what was once the best ride in town.

Explore Kent Falls State Park

Kent Falls State Park is a definite must visit in Connecticut, with a historic covered bridge, 250-feet of cascading waterfalls, and waterfall trails that let you get so close to the falls that you’ll feel the cool mist on your face.

This is hands down, one of the most popular parks in CT.

Visit Lover’s Leap State Park

Situated along the Housatonic River, Lovers Leap State Park was named after a centuries-old legend of a pair of star-crossed lovers who perished together in the river trying to reach one another.

That story has since been thoroughly debunked, but it’s still an interesting story to ponder as you explore this 160-acre state park with its hiking trails, historic ruins, and incredible views of the Housatonic, especially over the historic truss iron bridge that was originally erected in 1895.

Just ninety miles long by 55 miles wide, CONNECTICUT is New England’s southernmost state and the most influenced by New York City; thousands of commuters make the trip each day, and many of the opulent mansions are owned by Wall Street bankers. Connecticut Open House Day takes place on Saturday, June 10. For nearly 20 years, the event has been a chance for Connecticut museums, art galleries, and other tourism attractions to offer a range of deals and discounts .

Here are some of the highlights of Open House Day 2023.

1. Explore the Elizabeth Park Rose Garden

Did you know Connecticut is home to the oldest public rose garden in the US? And, it is entirely free. Elizabeth Park contains tens of thousands of individual rose bushes across many species of the Rosa genus .

The main garden, with a rose-covered gazebo, is the perfect date spot in Connecticut. You can also explore smaller side gardens incorporating startling colors and formations.

While Elizabeth Park is best known for its rose gardens, there are a few other notable sights. There is some nice stonework and archways at the entrances. You can also get a great view of the Hartford skyline from the lookout point across from the main entrance.

Playgrounds, sports fields, and open spaces provide plenty of free areas for whatever outdoor activity you love.

2. Hike a Section of the Appalachian Trail

The Appalachian Trail winds along the Appalachian Mountains for over 2180 miles. It is the longest hiking-only path in the world. The ‘AT’ stretches from Maine to Georgia, crossing 12 other states in the process, including Connecticut.

For about 50 miles through CT’s northwestern corner, the Appalachian Trail passes through towns like Salisbury, Sherman, and Kent.

While hiking any section of the trail will be a challenge, the views are certainly worth it! And, you’ll be able to tell your friends you hiked the Appalachian Trail! Well, sort of.

3. Go on a Paranormal Adventure

Did you know Connecticut is home to many of the spookiest places in the country ? Whether you’re a believer in the paranormal or not, you can spend the day visiting some of these haunted locations.

Here are a few spots to get you started:

• Union Cemetery (Easton, CT) — home of the “The Lady in White.”
• Seventh Day Baptist Cemetery (Burlington, CT) — haunted by the “Green Lady.”
• Center Church (New Haven, CT) — a crypt under the church holds tombstones from 1687
• Fairfield Hills State Hospital (Newtown, CT) — a defunct mental institution with plenty of creepy sights in its halls.

Because these sights draw paranormal enthusiasts from across the state and beyond, access to certain areas may be limited. We recommend only touring these spots during the day to avoid trespassing.

4. Wander Around Mystic, Connecticut

The town of Mystic seems to have a little bit of everything. You can browse the shops downtown or at Olde Mistick Village. Alternatively, you can walk along the boardwalks at the seaport and surrounding areas. There’s even a working drawbridge dividing downtown.

Most people visit Mystic during the summer, when you can enjoy one of the nearby paid attractions, like the Mystic Aquarium or Mystic Seaport. However, winter in Mystic is just as picturesque! The many shops and homes decorate to give the sense of a colonial Christmas in Connecticut.

If you run out of free things to do in Connecticut’s Mystic area, we recommend driving to nearby Stonington. It has its own charm and plenty of views of the water.

5. Visit Yale University

Yale University is another hotspot where there’s no shortage of stuff to do. The prestigious school features castle-like buildings, courtyards, libraries and more. You’ll feel transported somewhere else.

There are also some free museums and other attractions under the Yale banner, like the Yale University Art Gallery and Yale Center for British Art. These buildings also feature the incredible architecture seen throughout the campus.

You can also visit the nearby Center Church or Knights of Colombus Museum —both have free admission.

6. Read a Piece of History at Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library

Another attraction near the Yale bubble is the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. It is an engaging experience from the moment you arrive; the building has a commanding, out-of-place appearance — in the best way possible.

Once inside, the magic of the building continues. The windows are made from marble to reduce outside light that can damage the sensitive manuscripts inside. This creates a truly one-of-a-kind feeling. You’ll swear you stepped into someplace magical.

The actual artifacts in the library include a Gutenberg Bible from 1454, John James Audubon’s Birds of America, and the Voynich Manuscript.

Come for the rare books; stay for the incredible atmosphere!

7. Walk, Ride, and Swim at Kent Falls State Park

If you want to do something outdoorsy, your best bet is Kent Falls State Park. Largely regarded as one of the most beautiful spots in Connecticut, Kent Falls also offers a lot of free fun for everyone.

The park gets its name from the 250-foot falls feeding into the Housatonic River. The falls alone are worth the visit! You can hike to the top or enjoy the water spray at the bottom!

Kent Falls State Park also has a beautiful covered bridge worth viewing. You can find good fishing spots, pedestal grills for cooking, picnic tables, and other amenities.

8. See the Seasonal Offerings from Silverman’s Farm

Silverman’s Farm offers a year-round bounty of farm-fresh goods and activities for visitors. In the spring and summer, you can visit the petting zoo, browse beautiful flower arrangements or take a hayride through the apple orchard.

Once August rolls around, the season for apple picking starts. By October, Silverman’s pumpkin patch is bustling with activity. In the winter, you can browse Christmas trees or visit the country store, which magically transforms with decorations to look like Santa’s own workshop.

No matter when you visit, there’s something here to do, see, and, most importantly, eat!

9. Relax at Lighthouse Point Park

Lighthouse Point Park is one of those hidden shoreline gems. It rarely makes lists of the top CT beaches, but it definitely should! There are plenty of sandy spots to claim, but, if the beach is too crowded, there are also picnic tables and grassy areas nearby. Or, you can head to the other side of the point to find a bench or rock to call your own.

The lighthouse stands near the end of the point, next to a building for weddings and other events, and offers a good backdrop for photos.

Lighthouse Point Park transforms into “Fantasy of Lights” in late November, giving holiday spiriters the chance to drive through many incredible light displays.

It’s worth noting that parking at Lighthouse Point Park may cost a little during peak months. To avoid this, park on one of the roads leading to the entrance instead. It may be a short walk, but you’ll save money!

10. Hike the Sleeping Giant

Just outside New Haven, in Hamden, is the Sleeping Giant. It’s a silly name for a group of hills that give the appearance of, as the name suggests, a sleeping giant.

While the name is worth the visit alone, Sleeping Giant State Park is also one of Connecticut’s favorite hiking spots. The trails are easy and manicured for hiker comfort. It will take you less than an hour to reach the summit.

At the top, an observation tower provides an amazing vantage point for all of your pictures and horizon gazing. It’s a great hike for any time of the year!

11. Get Your Feet Wet at Hammonasset Beach

Hammonasset Beach is the most popular sandy spot in the state. Despite this popularity, you should have no problem finding a place to put down your beach towel because Hammonasset is nearly two miles long!

When you’re done sunning and swimming on the beach, Hammonasset offers facilities for a variety of activities, like camping, fishing, boating, bicycling and more. There’s also a nature center with hands-on programs for younger audiences.

If you’re coming during peak summer months, you may have to pay for parking or find a free spot nearby and walk. In the fall and winter months, Hammonasset Beach is still one of the best places to take a walk in CT.

12. Visit the Museum of Connecticut History

The Museum of Connecticut History is 100% free, making it a great destination for a no-cost outing. It’s also located near the State Capitol building, which is worth a look as well!

While the museum is fairly small, it does contain a few notable artifacts from Connecticut’s history, like the 1662 Royal Charter creating the colony of Connecticut and multiple versions of the State’s own Consitution.

If you love Connecticut or just want to learn more about the place you’re visiting, this history museum is a must-see. There are also exhibits that military history enthusiasts will love!

13. Experience Natural Art at Weir Farm National Historical Park

Weir Farm was the summer home of American artist Julian Alden Weir. It was the inspiration for Weir’s Impressionist artwork (along with paintings by other famous American artists). Its role in the rise of American Impressionist painting makes it a significant landmark for artists.

Today, you can explore the grounds and even tour the Weir house, gaining a full appreciation for why this site was home to so much incredible artwork.

You can even grab some free art supplies (available to visitors) and see what masterpieces you can create!

14. Window Shop on Greenwich Avenue

California has Rodeo Drive. Connecticut has Greenwich Avenue. This stretch of road and sidewalk is littered with stores from some of the most recognizable luxury brands out there.

Despite the high-end boutiques and department stores on either side, Greenwich Avenue maintains the charming atmosphere of most colonial towns in Connecticut.

It’s a really nice place to walk around, window shop, and watch people spend fortunes on luxury clothing and twinkling jewelry. Bring some coffee or snacks from home and park yourself on a bench to enjoy the full Greenwich Ave experience!

15. See Something Medieval at Hubbard Park

In the center of Meriden’s Hubbard Park is a stone structure that looks straight out of the Dark Ages. While King Arthur never visited Connecticut, Walter Hubbard did. He had the tower (named Castle Craig) and park constructed in the 20th century, donating both to the town of Meriden.

There are several trails to reach Castle Craig. You can choose what trail difficulty to use for hiking to the ancient-looking fort.

Aside from Castle Craig, Hubbard Park has all of the beauty, open space, and amenities you can expect from one of the best Connecticut parks. In the winter, you can drive through the park and see several wire statues lit up in festive string lights.

16. Take a Free Trip to the Casino

Going to a casino seems counterproductive when you’re trying to plan a free outing. However, both Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun offer some free activities to visitors. And, it doesn’t cost anything to walk in the door!

Both locations (which are conveniently located next to one another) routinely offer free concerts and shows. You can also wander through the casinos and see incredible glass sculptures, artwork, architecture, and more.

Plus, there are stores you can window shop and plenty of people-watching to be had! Who says the house always has to win?

17. Spot Wildlife at the Connecticut Audobon Society

The Connecticut Audobon Society’s mission is to conserve natural habitats for birds and other animals in CT. Over the years, the Audobon Society has acquired land across the state for these conservation purposes and “science-based education and advocacy.”

In total, there are 8 Audobon centers across the state and several more bird sanctuaries, meaning there’s likely a site nearby where you can visit.

Most Audubon locations offer easy walking trails with ample birdwatching possibilities. Pay attention to the Audobon Society’s monthly calendar. There are always events available to learn about bird conservation in CT and take part in other unique experiences.

18. Watch a Live Farm in Action at the UConn Animal Barn

The University of Connecticut’s Department of Animal Science contains several barns and other facilities with live animals. The UConn Animal Barn invites people to visit and see the day-to-day activities at the farm.

It’s important to note that this is not a petting zoo, nor can you feed any of the animals. That said, you may be able to catch cows being milked via the robotic Voluntary Milking System. You can also see beef cows, sheep, horses, and other animals.

On your way out, don’t forget to stop at the UConn Dairy Bar for ice cream. Many visitors come just for the frozen confections.

19. Enjoy Spectacular Views at Harkness Memorial State Park

Harkness Memorial State Park contains the former summer home of the Harkness family. The estate is truly extravagant and has many gardens and quiet, private spaces that are open to the public.

While you can tour or participate in various events inside the estate’s residence, it is the surrounding areas and views that make the Harkness Memorial State Park a must-visit. The water-side location in Waterford provides panoramic views of Long Island Sound and the shoreline.

It’s a truly unique experience and a great location to spend a day outside!

New England is loved for its waterways, most famously for its waterfront along the Atlantic Ocean, but also the historic Lake Champlain , the mountain-ringed lakes of New Hampshire , the fly-fishing and rafting resource of the Housatonic River , and the many beautiful bays. Maine’s famous windjammers offer cruises, as do boat pilots on Lake Winnipesaukee . Many cruises offer specialty events like sunset views or wine tasting, or a chance to watch lobstermen pull in their catch. Essex, Connecticut , offers a combined land-and-water adventure on am antique train followed by a river paddleboat.

Museums and Shopping

She loves museums; he loves to shop. Let’s start with Boston, MA ’s fabulous arts, history, and science museums. Two favorites are the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum for art and a medieval courtyard and the USS Constitution Museum , with “Old Ironsides” docked nearby. Shopping is grand at Newbury Street and the famous Faneuil Hall Marketplace . It’s not fair, though, to focus on a single city. Art and history and science museums are plentiful and fascinating in Maine , Vermont , New Hampshire , Massachusetts , Rhode Island , and Connecticut .

Colonial and Revolutionary History

You can find stories of the creation of America almost everywhere, along with tales of the region’s seafaring history . Boston, MA has the Freedom Trail among stores, churches and houses where the Revolution of 1776 was planned. The Industrial Revolution was founded at Slater Mill in Rhode Island , when a Brit smuggled plans for a water-powered mill out of England. Living history museums include Plimoth Patuxet . The Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor, ME , is one of several that tell the histories of Native peoples.

Tracking Abortion Bans Across the Country

Twenty-one states ban abortion or restrict the procedure earlier in pregnancy than the standard set by Roe v. Wade, which governed reproductive rights for nearly half a century until the Supreme Court overturned the decision in 2022.

In some states, the fight over abortion access is still taking place in courtrooms, where advocates have sued to block bans and restrictions. Other states have moved to expand access to abortion by adding legal protections.

Latest updates

• The Arizona state legislature voted to repeal an 1864 ban on nearly all abortions. Officials warned that the near-total ban may be briefly enforceable this summer until the repeal takes effect in the fall. A 15-week ban remains in effect.
• A ban on abortion after about six weeks of pregnancy took effect in Florida , following a ruling by the Florida Supreme Court that the privacy protections of the state’s Constitution do not extend to abortion.

The New York Times is tracking abortion laws in each state after the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization , which ended the constitutional right to an abortion.

Where abortion is legal

In a few states that have enacted bans or restrictions, abortion remains legal for now as courts determine whether these laws can take effect. Abortion is legal in the rest of the country, and many states have added new protections since Dobbs.

More details on the current status of abortion in each state are below.

An earlier version of this article misstated the legal status of abortion in Utah. As of 4 p.m. on June 24, the state attorney general had issued a statement saying the state’s abortion ban had been triggered, but it had not yet been authorized by the legislature’s general counsel. By 8:30 p.m., the counsel authorized the ban and it went into effect.

A table in an earlier version of this article misstated which abortion ban is being challenged in Texas state court. Abortion rights supporters are challenging a pre-Roe ban, not the state’s trigger ban.

An earlier version of this article referred incorrectly to the legal status of abortion in Indiana. While Indiana abortion providers stopped offering abortion services in anticipation of an abortion ban taking effect on Aug. 1, the law did not take effect.
