You have seen enough of the Reeperbahn and the harbour, the Elbe Philharmonic Hall and the "Michel"? Do you want to go out into the countryside? No problem - not only in the city, there are also plenty of green oases at the gates of Hamburg that invite you to take a breather!

72 hours

Even though Hamburg is always worth a trip on its own, a short holiday in the Elbe metropolis can be wonderfully combined with a cruise. Three days offer enough time to explore all facets of Hamburg. It is not only there that you will enjoy music at its finest. Hamburg is a real cultural metropolis: you can experience music, art and culture at over 300 locations in the city. Have you ever been to the "Factory" in Altona or the Mikiko Sato Gallery on Klosterwall? Arriving in Hamburg on the Elbe

Arriving in Hamburg on the Elbe

107 kilometres - this is the distance from the Elbe estuary at the mouth of the North Sea to the port of Hamburg. Enjoy the view from aboard the ship as the "Old Land" ("Altes Land") passes you by - a beautiful spot of earth at the gates of Hamburg, enchanting with its apple orchards and thatched houses. Just before arriving in Hamburg, please listen carefully: for 60 years, at the "Willkomm-Höft" (the ship welcoming station) every ship has been greeted via loudspeakers with its national anthem and the hoisted national flag!

Welcome to Hamburg!

Where to watch ships

The Queen Mary 2 passes by majestically on her journey through the Port of Hamburg, while on land countless onlookers wave enthusiastically - and take pictures. If you are not on board this time, there is no need to be sad, as there are numerous places from land where you can get close to your beloved cruise liners. We will tell you the best spots for this.

Leaving Hamburg on the Elbe

Leaving Hamburg on the Elbe

From Hamburg into the world. No matter whether you are going on a round-the-world-trip or "just" on a small cruise into the North Sea. The journey begins as soon as you depart at the cruise terminal and leave the port of Hamburg. You will pass by the wonderful villas on the bank of the river Elbe, see local residents enjoying a walk on the beach to then pass the Hanseatic and medieval town of Stade in the "Old Land" ("Altes Land"), until the ship finally reaches the "Kugelbake" in Cuxhaven, a wooden lighthouse that marks the beginning of the North Sea - and, in earlier times, showed seafarers the way.

Cruise Gate Hamburg (Germany) hosts record number of cruise ship calls

CruiseMapper logo

CGH-Cruise Gate Hamburg (Germany) welcomed a record 280 cruise ship calls in 2022, surpassing pre-COVID levels which hit a high of 210 visits in 2019.

In total, 49 cruise ships from 20 different lines visited the Port of Hamburg. Highlights of the season included 1 christening, 10 maiden calls, and 41 cruise calls by river ships. The port also hosted ~750,000 passengers.

Simone Maraschi, managing director of CGH said they were very happy about the high demand for cruises departing from Hamburg.

“For us it is proof that the enormous efforts and the adaptability demonstrated by the entire industry during the Covid-19 pandemic are truly appreciated.”

CGH expects to beat the record again over the next year, with 283 calls already booked, along with an additional 37 from riverboats. The port will host 8 maiden calls, including 2 from new brands - Explora Journeys’ Explora I and Albatros Expeditions’ Ocean Albatros .

Hamburg is making progress toward achieving its sustainability goals. In 2022, 30 ships were connected to onshore electricity supplied by the power station at Altona cruise terminal. 4 vessels carried out integration tests, while 12 will undergo this process next year. Once tests are complete, cruise ships can be fully certified to use the s hore power station while docked at the port. The port plans to electrify all of its permanent terminals by 2040.

Port of Hamburg (Germany)

According to Jens Meier, CEO of the Hamburg Port Authority, ports played a crucial role in decarbonization and keeping the air clean.

“Shoreside electricity enables us to significantly reduce ships’ emissions while they are docking at the Port of Hamburg. We are looking forward to being one of Europe’s first ports to offer both cruise ships and container vessels shore-based power at the berth in 2025.”

Cruise Gate Hamburg: End-of-Season Record Call at the Hanseatic city

December 21, 2023

The Christmas holiday voyages on December 22 and December 29 set a new record of passenger turnaround per day at Hamburg’s cruise terminals operated by Cruise Gate Hamburg (CGH). In addition to the thousands of guests disembarking and embarking the ship on these days, staff will unload and load some 8,800 suitcases and accept 16 truckloads of food and drinks per each voyage.

Simone Maraschi , Managing Director of CGH, “Ending this eventful cruise season with such a highlight is noteworthy on two counts. On one hand, it shows just how attractive and sought-after cruise trips departing from Hamburg are, even in winter. On the other hand, the logistics achievements of the employees are outstanding. Our well-practised processes at the terminal and the excellent co-operation of all parties involved make it possible to ensure efficient luggage services and smooth provisioning operations even on extremely busy turnaround days such as these. We want our guests to have the very best experience here, and we will do our utmost to make sure that they can set off on their Christmas holiday cruise carefree and relaxed.”

Felix Eichhorn , President of AIDA Cruises, “We are delighted to see so many guests wanting to spend Christmas and the New Year with us. Since 2016 when we launched our AIDAprima we, in conjunction with the city and CGH, the terminal operator, have been putting a lot of effort into making Hamburg a year-round destination. Roughly half of all cruise ships calling at Hamburg are AIDA ships, and we offer a wide range of cruise options from the Hanseatic city throughout the year. At the same time, we are one of the key drivers of tourism in the city; more than every second cruise passenger is an AIDA guest.”

Hamburg has been AIDAnova’s home port for the winter season since 11 November 2023, a first for the ship. Up until 4 May 2024 she will sail 26 times to major west European cities as well as Norway and Denmark on an alternate weekly schedule. The ship is powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and has the required equipment to run on shore power while docking at Cruise Center Steinwerder. Apart from Altona, the terminal in Steinwerder is Hamburg’s second cruise centre with shoreside power infrastructure. Cruise Center HafenCity, which is currently under construction, will also sport a shore power facility. As ships can use shore power while at the berth in the Port of Hamburg, their emissions will be cut to almost zero.

The 2023 cruise season in Hamburg started on January 1st; the last ships will be turned around on December 31st. Hamburg is a year-round destination that offers season-independent cruise trips to attractive places.

At the moment 268 calls are scheduled for the 2024 season, of which nine cruise ships will sail to Hamburg on their maiden voyages, among them the Azamara Onward, COSTA Favolosa, Mein Schiff 7, Ocean Albatros, Queen Anne, Seabourn Quest, Sirena and Sky Princess – as well as one ship from Disney Cruise Line whose Disney Dream is scheduled to call at Hamburg for the first time on 3 September 2024.

Hamburg Set for Big Winter of Cruising

  • November 13, 2021

cruise gate hamburg newsletter

Hamburg is set for a historic winter of cruising with itineraries leaving the German port and heading to the Baltic Sea, the Norwegian Fjords, the Arctic Circle, the British Isles, destinations in Western Europe as well as the Canary Islands and the Azores from a variety of different cruise lines.

“We are pleased that the season continues beyond the turn of the year and that guests can choose from a wide portfolio of special winter cruising programs from Hamburg,” said Simone Maraschi, Managing Director of Cruise Gate Hamburg (CGH), which has 36 more calls before 2022.

“In 2022, ship calls will be at a solid level again, which makes us look ahead to the coming year in a spirit of optimism. We can see that the cruise lines are returning to their original schedules,” said Maraschi. The port expects around 300 ship calls in 2022.

Among key health and safety measures, in addition to a negative COVID-19 test required to be presented prior to arrival, testing in the terminal is part of the embarkation process and mandatory for all guests.

Winter Highlights

  • The AIDAprima will be departing Hamburg for 26 week-long European metropolis itineraries.
  • Two longer winter sailings to the Caribbean will be carried out from/to Hamburg with AIDAsol: the first transatlantic voyage will last a full 43 days – starting Nov. 25 over Christmas and New Year’s Eve – followed by the second voyage of 43 days beginning directly upon return of the AIDAsol  on Jan. 7 2022.
  • The 2021 winter program by AIDA also includes new voyages aboard the AIDAnova from Hamburg.
  • For the first time, MSC Cruises will have based a ship in a German port during the winter months with the MSC Magnifica.
  • With the Hanseatic Spirit, the latest addition to the Hapag-Lloyd Cruises expedition fleet, guests can set off from Hamburg on Scandinavian winter adventures.
  • Hurtigruten Expeditions has made Hamburg its homeport and will be offering year-round cruises from the Hanseatic city to Norway with the hybrid expedition ship MS Otto Sverdrup.
  • Phoenix Reisen also serves different destinations with its ships from Hamburg: The MS Amadea sets course for the German north in November and to Nice in December. Aboard MS Artania, guests can spend Christmas and New Years in the sunny south – including Funchal, San Sebastian, Las Palmas – or travel to the Canary Islands and Madeira in January. Cruises from Hamburg to Gothenburg, Oslo, Bergen and the North Cape will be added by MS Amera.
  • As far as winter cruising is concerned, Cunard has scheduled 4 calls at Hamburg by Queen Mary 2 in the first three months of the 2022 season.

Hamburg ends 2023 cruise season with record-breaking guest numbers

Christmas holiday calls from AIDA Cruises’ AIDAnova will see thousands of passengers using the port

Hamburg ends 2023 cruise season with record-breaking guest numbers

Cruise Gate Hamburg

By Laura Hyde | 22 December 2023

Hamburg Port is closing its 2023 cruise season with two calls from AIDA Cruises’ AIDAnova.

The Christmas holiday voyages on 22 and 29 December will see record-breaking passenger turnaround per day at the German city’s cruise terminals, which are operated by Cruise Gate Hamburg. The ship, which has a maximum capacity of 5,200 passengers, is fully booked so thousands of guests are expected to disembark and embark, with port staff unloading and loading some 8,800 suitcases for each voyage.

“Ending this eventful cruise season with such a highlight is noteworthy on two counts,” said Simone Maraschi, managing director of CGH. “On one hand, it shows just how attractive and sought-after cruise trips departing from Hamburg are, even in winter. On the other hand, the logistics achievements of the employees are outstanding. We want our guests to have the very best experience here, and we will do our utmost to make sure that they can set off on their Christmas holiday cruise carefree and relaxed.”

Hamburg has been AIDAnova’s homeport since the ship arrived on 11 November 2023. In September 2023, AIDA Cruises signed a five-year agreement to continue bringing the same volume of ships and passengers to the port .

“We are delighted to see so many guests wanting to spend Christmas and the New Year with us,” said Felix Eichhorn, president of AIDA Cruises. “Since 2016 when we launched AIDAprima we, in conjunction with the city and CGH, the terminal operator, have been putting a lot of effort into making Hamburg a year-round destination. We are one of the key drivers of tourism in the city; more than every second cruise passenger is an AIDA guest.”

So far, 268 cruise calls are scheduled at Hamburg for the 2024 season, of which nine cruise ships will make their maiden voyage to the port, including Azamara Cruises’ Azamara Onward, Costa Cruises’ Costa Favolosa, TUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff 7, Albatros Expeditions’ Ocean Albatros, Cunard’s Queen Anne, Seabourn Cruises’ Seabourn Quest, Oceania Cruises’ Sirena, Princess Cruises’ Sky Princess and Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Dream, which is scheduled to call at Hamburg for the first time on 3 September 2024.
