Detroit MI (aka Motor City) is USA's 7th largest city and a major port on Detroit River. It is located on a navigable waterway that links the Great Lakes with Saint Lawrence Seaway .

The city is also world's foremost car-manufacturing center. The economic growth was aided by city's transport links to USA's interior and its strategic location on Detroit River - the waterway connecting USA's upper and lower Great Lakes.

On Detroit riverfront is located the Civic Center, with Cobo Hall, City-County Building and Arena (one of the largest convention halls in the US). Here also is Henry and Edsel Ford Auditorium and Museum. Ford Museum takes a look at the man behind the assembly line and at how his ingenuity has transformed American life. The collection includes antique and classic cars including the automobile in which JFK was shot, railway locomotives, farm equipment, kitchen appliances, car advertising posters, early car videos. Greenfield Village is adjacent to the museum. It takes tourists back 150 years to reveal the genius of remarkable Americans. Actual structures like Thomas Edison's Menlo Park laboratory, Orville and Wilbur Wright's home and bicycle shop, have been moved to Greenfield. The village also features a paddleboat on the small lake and an operating steam railway.

Also north of downtown are General Motors and Fisher buildings, designed by the German architect Albert Kahn. Pewabic Pottery (1907) is another place of interest, built for ceramicist Mary Chase Perry Stratton. Her glazed tiles were an important element in buildings of 1920s. West of Detroit's downtown area is situated Fort Wayne Military Museum, Midwest's best-preserved pre-American Civil War fort. It houses Great Lakes Indian Museum and Tuskegee Airmen Museum.

The post-COVID 2022 was the most successful year ever for cruises on the Great Lakes. The season featured ~150,000 cruise ship tourists (+25% over 2019) served by 9x boats. Currently, the largest by capacity Great Lakes cruise companies are Viking Cruises USA ( Viking Octantis ), AQV-American Queen Voyages (ships Ocean Navigator , Ocean Voyager ), Pearl Seas Cruises ( Pearl Mist ), and the Canadian company St Lawrence Cruise Lines ( Canadian Empress ). Other travel brands that offer Great Lakes voyages are PONANT and Tauck ( fleet ).

Due to the increased Great Lakes cruise passenger traffic, in 2022 were opened two new US Customs and Border Protection facilities - in Duluth MI and Cleveland OH, in addition to the existing in Detroit MI and Sault Ste Marie MI.

In 2022, Detroit Port Authority reported a successful season with a total of 52 cruise ship calls/handled berthings.

Visited Detroit for a family reunion. One of our outings included the Riverboat. The Lunch boat option was one of highlights for everyone. We were fortunate the weather was perfect a nice sea breeze. Not to mention a lunch buffet that included beef tips, baked chicken, potatoes, and vegetables. It wasn't the best meal we had but it was the total ambience that made the boat ride that much more special. The ride included a special performance from the group Prolific's who did an outstanding job singing memorable Motown by songs from the 60s and 70s that the audience loved. The boat ride lasted 2 hour and twenty minutes but seemed longer. The price was excellent and I would recommend this boat ride if you ever get the opportunity.

I was aboard the ship for my class reunion. It was wonderful to be with friends but there are some things which could be done to improve the experience. Dinner is served buffet style. All of the entrees (baked chicken, vegetable tortellini Alfredo, balsamic roasted Portobello mushrooms, and prime rib) were served lukewarm instead of hot. The same goes for the roasted potatoes and steamed vegetables. Dessert was a very thin slice of pound cake with a tiny scoop of vanilla ice cream and a spoonful of frozen strawberries in syrup. Dinner DOES NOT include soft drinks, but it should for the price! There were lines at the bar because one of the bartenders ONLY accepted cash. He said his "credit card system was down". I think he just didn't want to work! The ship is old but in good condition. The first hour of the cruise is music by a Motown cover band, The Prolifics. These guys could have done a better job according to my friends. There's a break and a DJ takes the stage. He played requests and got us on our feet to wind down the evening.

I was trying to plan a couple of unique experiences for him for a change. Every experience is unique for me. But he's never been on the Detroit Princess so I thought this would be fun. Originally our tickets were for the beer tasting. Well... That cancelled. So we ended up doing the dinner. I was very disappointed that the beer tasting cancelled as I think we would have really enjoyed that. We were a bit worried that we were going to be with a bunch of old women but we were pleasantly surprised by the diversity of the patrons. Dinner was served buffet style. Basic "wedding food". Nothing too special. Nothing really stuck out. It's a cash bar which gets pricey. But also keep people from getting sloppy drunk. Most people were dressed in business casual. Some were quite dressed up and others in shorts and jeans. I guess it depends on your preference. The Detroit Princess is quite large. The view was beautiful. The ride was probably a little longer than either of us were ready for. You board at 6 and can start eating immediately. Once finished, you can wander the boat. The boat leaves at 7. It's a two hour tour. So you dock at 9. Party ends at 9:30. We were probably ready to get off the boat by 8:15 haha. They did have some terrific entertainment. Well, at least I thought so. I love Motown music. I was tapping my toes. It's not really his cup of tea. Like I said, the beer tasting would have been much more to our liking but overall it was a very fun experience. We just won't likely do it again haha. I do think this or something similar is a great idea to really get the full feel of the Detroit skyline. It is an amazing a beautiful city that people don't always appreciate!

The cruise was relaxing and beautiful from the upper decks although the pot aroma was prettier strong at times. The food was good not super special. The Motown music was fun but we were sitting in front of the speakers and it was way too loud so we sat on the upper deck and enjoyed the scenery. The one complaint I'd make was that it was impossible to get a drink. There were only two bartenders and they were very slow I think because they have to split there tips with the other staff. They could have sold so many cocktails had they had more workers and hustled more.

Upper deck sunset with our group. Perfect weather!

We had an amazing time. Food was great. Drinks were great. We seen the Motown show these gentlemen were so amazing. So talented an great to the audience. Ms Sheila went above an beyond to make us feel welcome. An that was before she knew we had a WWE celebrity with us. We will definitely be back if we ever come to Detroit.

Even though we did not have the opportunity to cross into Windsor (Canada)- I was happy knowing that our Motown Dinner Cruise on the Detroit Princess was a success. Thank goodness this suggestion was thrown my way, because I would've never come across this gem. We booked our cruise on their website & as suggested from my friend- she told me to mention in the "Notes" section of my booking that I was part of the NALC group- that way we can all be seated together. And it worked out perfect. Our group had 4 tables next to another! We printed out our passes & it was a breeze getting on board. For $68- was really impressed out how huge the riverboat was. When it said boarding is at 6pm- get there! The food buffet is ready to go!! And they're not messing around! Although some of my companions had their mixed reviews on the food selection & what they thought of quality- I can only review my experience. I made 2 or 3 trips to the food line & got the same damn thing each trip. I indulged in the tossed salad (iceberg lettuce, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, & shredded cheese) and ranch dressing; baked herbed chicken- got my greedy fingers on the wings; & carved prime rib w/ au jus & horseradish. Other dinner selections that night were pork tenderloin, vegetarian lasagna, cheese tortellini, steamed mixed vegetables, dinner rolls, & browned potatoes. The chicken was moist & tender. The prime rib was delicious & went well w/ my spicy gin Bloody Mary. The bartender was really nice- we just waited fort he lines to die down. There was no worscestershire sauce available- her words were "the bar is very limited in selection"- it was all good. She made a stiff one & was kind to give me tons of olives. Entertainment was provided by the Prolifics getting down to unforgettable 60s Motown. We ventured to the 4th level of the boat (we were seated at the 3rd) to catch the wonderful breeze & sights of Canadian homes across the river. Luckily for us- it wasn't a balmy evening. It was cool & no humidity. It was beautiful to watch the sun lowering & passing by the lighthouse.

The stuff is extremely friendly & give you a easy relaxed experience. They went over & beyond working hard @ yesterdays lunch cruise. Thank you for great service! We loved the music & the band the "Prolifics" sparkled the right mood with great songs. The boat is sparkling clean including the bathrooms. The buffet would need some improvement. Overall it was a pleasant experience for me & my honeys birthday.

Just had an enjoy evening on the Princess for a Boat Club's Commodore Ball on level 3. The food was good, the bar service was great and the staff assisting me with my DJ equipment rocked. Beautiful night for a cruise. Thank you staff!!

Photo of Michael T.

I mentioned I had a good experience. The day after I went there,I had a very nasty stomach ache and nausea. I was in bed the whole day. The couple I went with experienced the same symptoms as I (queezy, stomach ache, diarrhea and nausea). The only thing we had in common was eating the beef tips and dessert while on the princess. My wife had other things and did not feel sick at all, but we did. That was the only time we spent with each other in days so we deduced food poisoning of some sort. We drove separate, went home separate, and they did not come with us elsewhere that day, but we all had the same symptoms within 24 hours of each other and it was not a flu. I had a blast on the boat but am concerned the food quality is an issue. Please note I still give a decent review otherwise and as seen in the over 100 other reviews I give that I have not reported similar conditions before. I was hesitant to write this but had shared experiences with others.

This was a very enjoyable experience yesterday. TFC Center was an issue getting through as they were closed and were the recommended parking structure, but otherwise was great. We got on early, did the souvenir picture at the steering wheel, and were taken to our table. Dinner was beef tips and/or chicken, mashed potatoes, salad and steamed veggies, cheese tortellini, mushrooms and rolls. We also had strawberry shortcake. There was a cash bar inside and plenty of water, coffee or tea. The Prolifics played Motown-style music and were fun. They gave a shout out for my birthday as well as other celebrating anniversaries and bachelorette parties. We danced a soul train line at the end and had fun. The cruise itself was nice as were the staff. It cost $57 a ticket for the lunch cruise which we did or $87 if you do dinner with prime rib. The lunch cruise was plenty for me. The music was good, though I wish I would've spent more time on the deck as by the time lunch and music was done, we had about 12 minutes left if boat ride. The view was nice. I added a few pics of my wife and I with friends who were celebrating their anniversary the next day. It's worth it to try this at least once as the views and memories are worth it.

Photo of Megan K.

It was a beautiful day for an evening cruise June 17th and the views from the boat were lovely. Don't forget to go outside and go up all the levels to see a different view and get pictures with the sunset! Can also grab a small table on the deck outside after dinner. I loved the dinner menu, it worked for me. Delicious mushrooms to go with your prime rib, tortellini with a creamy sauce, veggies and salad were good. Also had chicken which was seasoned and baked well. The live band was good, however, the music throughout the entire time was so loud, I wasn't able to easily speak to my family and enjoy their company around the dinner table nearly the whole time unless we went outside. And unfortunately, the time I spent outside observing the view was tainted by a CONSTANT smell of weed everywhere you went. This is my biggest complaint, I am surprised the boat allows this. We had children in our party as well. The extra loud music, and the weed smell everywhere outside is why I gave 3 stars. Fix those issues and this would easily be a more enjoyable boat ride.

Capturing Skylines: The Best Views of Detroit and Windsor Aboard Detroit Princess

Nestled along the shores of the Detroit River, the Detroit Princess Riverboat offers a relaxing and picturesque way to experience the beauty of the Motor City.

In operation through the spring, summer, and fall, this iconic riverboat invites locals and visitors alike to embark on daytime and evening cruises that promise stunning views, delectable dining, live entertainment, and a glimpse into Detroit's rich heritage. While you might have spotted this majestic vessel cruising gracefully along the river or moored at the Detroit International RiverWalk, you'll truly grasp its massive scale when you stand in its presence.

Top Sights Aboard the Detroit Princess Riverboat

As soon as you get on the water and begin your cruise past Belle Isle and further down the river towards Lake St. Clair, you'll see why the Detroit Princess is a must-do for anyone with an affinity for the Motor City! Here’s a sneak peek of the quintessential Detroit views that await you on your cruise:

1. Detroit City Skyline

As the boat pushes off the riverbank, a captivating panorama of the iconic Detroit skyline unfolds before your eyes. The towering skyscrapers, including the renowned Renaissance Center, create a striking contrast against the open sky and shimmering water. Be sure to return in different seasons to witness the high-rises framed by ever-changing greenery.

2. Stunning Sunsets

Evening cruises along the Detroit River are known for their breathtaking sunsets and there's no better vantage point to witness them than from high up on the decks of the Detroit Princess Riverboat. As the sun gracefully dips below the horizon, it bathes the city in warm, glowing hues of orange and pink, conjuring a truly enchanting atmosphere.

3. Detroit International RiverWalk

The Detroit International RiverWalk is a picturesque promenade that traces the riverbanks. From the riverboat's vantage point, you'll enjoy an unobstructed view of this scenic pathway, which is perfect for a leisurely stroll, invigorating run, or delightful bike ride. Along the RiverWalk, you'll find parks, plazas, and open green spaces that promise year-round enjoyment.

4. Ambassador Bridge

The Ambassador Bridge, connecting Detroit to Windsor, Canada, is an engineering marvel. As you cruise beneath this iconic suspension bridge, you'll gain a new appreciation for the international connections that Detroit fosters while getting the opportunity to see two countries simultaneously.

5. Detroit River

The river itself is a sight to behold. This bustling waterway is often filled with freighters, pleasure boats, and kayakers enjoying an aquatic escape. The captivating river activity adds an extra layer of excitement, and people-watching opportunities, to your cruise.

A Look into the History of the Detroit Princess Riverboat

For nearly a century, the Boblo Boats SS Ste. Claire and SS Columbia played host to Detroiters on the river. In 1991, they were sold, leaving behind a void that the beloved Detroit Princess Riverboat eventually filled. Built in 1993 in Louisiana, this majestic vessel boasts a fascinating past as a floating casino known as the "Players Riverboat Casino II." In 2004, the boat embarked on a remarkable voyage to its new home in Detroit. Due to its size, navigating the Mississippi River was impossible, requiring it to be towed around Florida, through the inter-coastal waterway, and across the St. Lawrence Seaway to reach the Great Lakes. After a transformative overhaul, the boat was rechristened as the Detroit Princess Riverboat, heralding a new era of elegance and entertainment on the Detroit River.

A Stunning Backdrop for Events

The Detroit Princess Riverboat isn't just about sightseeing; it's also a versatile venue for events of all sizes. Whether you're planning a wedding , anniversary dinner, corporate gathering , or birthday celebration, the space serves as an unforgettable backdrop for creating lasting memories. Imagine exchanging vows as the sun dips behind the skyline or hosting a corporate dinner framed by the majestic Ambassador Bridge – the possibilities are endless.

According to the Port of Detroit, the Octantis docked around 8 a.m. and is set to leave at 2 p.m., but not before passengers have a chance to explore the city.

A record number of cruises are expected to dock in Detroit this year as part of a growing Great Lakes cruise industry.

Last year, there were a record 52 cruise ships that docked in Detroit, and according to Cruise the Great Lakes and the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority, there will be 67 cruise ships docking during the season.

David Lorenz, the vice president of Travel Michigan, said Cruise the Great Lakes met in Montreal earlier this year to look at the ships that planned to sail the Great Lakes this year. According to Lorenz, they have all the ships they had last year, and a new ship – the Hanseatic Inspiration.

The ships have a variety of routes on the Great Lakes with stops in Michigan including Detroit, Mackinac Island, Muskegon, Sault Ste. Marie and more.

When they stop in Detroit, the team from Visit Detroit works with the Port Authority to provide a welcome for passengers on the dock.

Passengers from the cruises have a variety of options to explore metro Detroit while they're in the area, with locations like The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation, Greenfield Village, the Motown Museum and more.

"Most people from all around the U.S., places like Texas and California, they've heard about places like Michigan, but they might not know the real story about pure Michigan and the rest of the Great Lakes region. So when they come here, they get this two-nation destination experience pretty unique," Lorenz said. "They get to see that people in our region are really friendly and they see this freshwater experience, which not many cruisers around the world really get to see."

The cruise industry doesn't just benefit Michigan and Detroit – it also helps other cities along the Great Lakes like Cleveland and Milwaukee.

According to the Port of Detroit, the cruise ships will continue to dock in the city throughout the summer and last until mid-October.

In all, there will be nine cruises in May, nine in June, 12 in July, 15 in August, 17 in September and five in October. That doesn't include the dinner cruises along the river that use the Port of Detroit.

According to Lorenz, the future of cruising on the Great Lakes is bright, and he thinks the initial visit to Detroit will bring people back.

He also said they're hoping to lure some ships to start and stop their journeys in Detroit in the future.

"I think what you're going to find is that the Port of Detroit is going to continue to make accommodations so that they can lure additional ships, including some of these bigger ships like the Hanseatic Inspiration," he said. "You're going to be able to see more and more ships here. And I tell you, we're going to all benefit from that initial visit because people are going to be able to see Detroit."

Detroit Princess Riverboat

Someone once told me there’s no better way to see a city than from the water. In Detroit, that’s also the way to straddle the border between the United States and Canada ! Take a ride on the Detroit Princess Riverboat and you’ll see downtown, Belle Isle, the city of Windsor, and the entrance to Lake St. Clair. At the right time of year, you’ll also enjoy a stunning sunset over the city skyline. You might even see the singular way the city sparkles at night. Your journey on this historic four-story riverboat includes dinner and dessert, and if you’re lucky it might involve a live performance of MoTown classics. There’s a cash bar and fellow guests on the boat are friendly. It is a wonderful way to meet locals because the riverboat is a popular way for Michigan residents to celebrate special events, dates, anniversaries, and birthdays. Tickets range in price depending on the day and time, with most beginning at around $27.50. They are available to purchase online and at the dock. Dress code is business casual. Don’t forget to spend some time outside the dining rooms, on the spacious decks, to get a little wind in your hair while taking in the wonderful views.

Detroit in the USA

Detroit is the largest city in the state of Michigan and the 23rd most populous city in the United States. It is located on the Detroit River, which separates the city from Canada. It is the seat of Wayne County and a major port on the Great Lakes. The city is known for its contributions to music, particularly Motown and techno, and its automobile industry, which has made Detroit a major center of the American automotive industry. It is also home to a number of major corporations, including General Motors, Chrysler, and Ford. The city was founded in 1701 by French explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac and was named after the Detroit River. It became the center of the French fur trade in the Great Lakes region, and was later ceded to the British in 1760. Detroit was captured by the United States during the War of 1812, and in 1815, it became part of the Michigan Territory. In the 19th century, Detroit's economy was dominated by the automobile industry, and the city became known as the "Motor City." In 1943, the city was the site of the Detroit Race Riot, one of the most destructive race riots in American history. In 1967, Detroit was the site of the 12th Street Riot, the largest civil disturbance in the city's history. Today, Detroit is a major cultural and economic center, and is home to a number of major corporations, including General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler. It is also home to a number of cultural institutions, such as the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the Detroit Opera House.

A decade of Lions first-rounders

After last season’s NFC Championship Game appearance, the Lions are schedule to make their first-round selection as late as they have in the last decade.

If the Lions do not move their draft pick, they will take the No. 29 pick in this year’s draft. The next latest pick in the last decade came at No. 28 in 2015, when the team took guard Laken Tomlinson.

The Lions have had five top-10 picks in the last decade, including four straight seasons from former head coach Matt Patricia’s three years and the first season under current coach Dan Campbell.

For this year’s seven draft picks (pending any trades), here is what MLive Lions reporter Benjamin Raven sees as the needs and priorities for the team.

A Retro Look At Cruises Through The Decades

Posted: November 29, 2023 | Last updated: November 29, 2023

From the earliest transatlantic voyages and golden-age ships to today's glittering juggernauts, we reveal 32 nostalgic images that chronicle cruise history.

Sailing through time

Before passengers began taking to the high seas, now-famous cruise lines principally operated as mail-shipping services. P&O, then the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company, won a contract to deliver mail to the Iberian Peninsula in 1837, a milestone event that would pave the way for commercial travel by ocean. The Black Ball Line, whose ships carried both passengers and mail, also became the first line to schedule a regular trans-Atlantic service. A Black Ball ship is pictured here in 1833.

1830s: the very beginnings

In the first half of the 19th century, most people crossed oceans for business rather than leisure – nevertheless, P&O is credited with launching the first pleasure cruises in this era. Boats bound for the Mediterranean struck out from England in 1844, with on-board passengers dreaming of sun, sand and sea. Pictured here is the P&O passenger liner SS Deccan sailing from Southampton a little later in 1870.

1840s: the first pleasure cruises

This decade also saw some of the biggest names in cruising sail onto the scene. The Cunard Line was founded in 1840, boasting an impressive fleet of steam-powered ships and whisking the likes of Charles Dickens to destinations such as Boston. Pictured here, in 1848, is Europa, one of Cunard's early Atlantic ships. The White Star Line, the operator of the famously ill-fated Titanic, was also founded in 1845.

1840s: a landmark in cruise-line history

Passenger cruising continued to develop through the mid-19th century, with luxuries like on-board lounges and simple entertainment emerging. Shown here, in 1856, is Cunard's RMS Persia, one of the largest ships of her time and an early Blue Riband winner (an award given for high-speed Atlantic crossings).

Business and pleasure weren't the only reasons for taking to the waves, though – in the 1870s, European immigrants were traveling to America in great numbers. Lines like the Holland America Line, launched in 1873, became famous for transporting great waves of people searching for a new life in the New World. This fun advert for the company dates to 1898.

1870s: the New World

In the 1880s, now well-established names like Cunard and P&O continued to make waves. Launched in 1881, and pictured here in 1899, SS Servia was the first Cunard passenger ship to function with electric lighting. To many, she represents an early model of today's modern liners.

1880s: lighting up the ocean

By the end of the 19th century, passenger cruise ships had become an exercise in luxury, with Cunard tipping its liners as "floating palaces". Offerings from competitors like P&O were just as lavish: this 1892 snap shows an opulent smoking room on P&O's Himalaya ship. Notice the plush booths, dark carved wood and intricate ceiling reliefs.

The period from the 1900s to the end of the 1930s is what many consider cruising’s golden age. By this point, the journey had become as important as the destination and passengers would don their finery to take to the seas for weeks on end. Here the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough relax on the deck of P&O's Arabia, en route to Mumbai in 1902.

1900s: entering cruising’s golden age

<p>At the turn of the century, there was still a frisson around cruising and large, buzzy crowds would often gather to see off the ships. This nostalgic photograph was snapped between 1900 and 1915, and shows large steam boats leaving from the White Star Line dock in Detroit, Michigan. Well-dressed passengers fill the ships' upper and lower decks too. <a href="https://www.loveexploring.com/galleries/67628/where-planes-trains-cruise-ships-and-automobiles-go-to-die?page=1">Discover where planes, trains, cruise ships and cars go to die here</a>.</p>

By the 1900s, passenger cruise services were nothing new. But the Prinzessin Victoria Luise (pictured) – a glamorous ship pioneered by the Hamburg America Line – is generally touted as the first purpose-built cruise ship. Launched in the summer of 1900, she was a grand ship with an ornately decorated bow and lavish interiors complete with luxurious first-class cabins. She came out of service in 1906 when she ran aground.

Many early 20th-century cruise ships had plenty of luxury amenities, but the entertainment on offer was a far cry from the glitzy shows and hi-tech attractions we're used to today. Common pastimes included shuffleboard, dancing and games like tug of war. Captured in 1912, these passengers on Cunard's Franconia enjoy a high-jump contest on deck.

1910s: onboard entertainment

<p>One of the most famous and devastating events in cruise history occurred in this decade. Dubbed "unsinkable" by the White Star Line's vice-president, the Titanic set out from Southampton on her maiden voyage on 10 April 1912 to much applause. But just four days later, she collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic: the compartments in her hull filled with water and she tragically sank. The disaster claimed the lives of more than 1,500 people. <a href="https://www.loveexploring.com/gallerylist/72633/secrets-of-the-titanic-life-onboard-the-worlds-most-famous-ship">Now discover the secrets of life onboard the Titanic</a>.</p>

1910s: the Titanic disaster

But just four days later, she collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic: the compartments in her hull filled with water and she tragically sank. The disaster claimed the lives of more than 1,500 people.

Just as cruising was enjoying its heyday, the industry entered troubled waters. The First World War halted progress in commercial cruising as attention was turned to the war effort. Many commercial liners were repurposed as military ships – Fred. Olsen, for example, purportedly lost 23 ships to the conflict. This 1918 photograph shows New York City crowds waiting for the return of Cunard's RMS Mauretania, which was carrying American soldiers back home after the war.

1910s: First World War

Still, against the odds, the cruise industry managed to keep its head above water and, post-war, the upper echelons of society took to the seas once more. Here affluent travelers dance on the deck of Cunard's Aquitania in 1922.

1920s: cruising’s golden age continued

In the Roaring Twenties, onboard entertainment was still focused around fun deck games and sports. Here spectators look on in delight as a pair of women take part in a fencing duel aboard Cunard's Berengaria (formerly Hamburg America Line's Imperator). The shot was taken in 1923.

1920s: setting the bar high

Huge dining rooms and bulging buffets are markers of the modern-day cruise and, in the 1920s, dinnertime was equally important. It was typically a grand affair requiring formal dress and involving course after course of fine food. Here, two chefs on Cunard's Aquitania stand before a splendid festive spread – the star is the giant cake in the shape of the ship.

1920s: a festive feast

Another major milestone came in the 1920s: the very first round-the-world cruise. The Cunard Line's RMS Laconia (pictured here leaving Liverpool circa 1920) sailed around the globe in 1922, calling at 22 ports along the way, and taking 450 lucky passengers with her.

The 1930s unfolded in much the same way as the decades previous, as the golden age of cruising continued: think deck games, dinners and dances. The king of all cruise-ship hobbies was shuffleboard, a game that's still often played on modern-day liners. Here, a couple enjoy a game on a cruise to Gibraltar on Cunard's Aquitania in 1932.

1930s: all games on deck

Today mammoth sun-bed-lined swimming pools – often with twirling water slides for kids – are a cruise-ship staple. But in the first half of the 20th century they were much humbler indeed. It's thought that the earliest cruise-ship swimming pool was installed in 1907, on the White Star Line's Adriatic, but they didn't become commonplace until later. Here passengers sunbathe next to a compact swimming pool onboard a Cunard cruise to the West Indies in 1931.

1930s: making a splash

The Second World War was another blow to commercial cruising: yet again, liners were repurposed as war vessels and pleasure cruising came to an abrupt halt. By the end of the decade, though, surviving ships were returned to their lines and put back into service. Slowly but surely, the appetite for cruising grew again. Here an excited crowd welcomes a ship at a Java seaport in the 1940s.

1940s: post-war cruising

<p>Come the 1950s, cruise ships had another phenomenon to compete with: jet planes. Commercial air travel boomed in this decade, with comfier aircraft and improved routes enticing travelers into the skies. Many cruise liners underwent swish post-war refits in an attempt to stay afloat: this 1950s photo shows the opulent dining room of French liner SS Île de France after a dramatic post-war makeover. <a href="https://www.loveexploring.com/galleries/86315/how-air-travel-has-changed-in-every-decade-from-the-1920s?page=1">See how air travel has changed through the decades</a>.</p>

There was one destination that proved particularly popular in the post-war decades, though. After the conflict, many Europeans decided to make a new life Down Under, with millions cruising to Oz on time-honored lines like P&O between the 1940s and the 1970s. P&O ship Oriana is pictured here in Circular Quay, Sydney circa 1950.

1950s: going Down Under

<p>Though formalized in the 1930s, the Blue Riband – the award for the passenger cruise liner with the fastest Atlantic-crossing time – has its roots right back in the 19th century. The record is still held by SS United States of United States Lines, which first sped across the Atlantic in 1952. She's pictured here on 9 July 1952, docking in Southampton. <a href="https://www.loveexploring.com/galleries/103600/vacation-on-mars-what-holidays-could-look-like-in-the-future?page=1">This is what vacations could look like in 2050</a>.</p>

The record is still held by SS United States of United States Lines, which first sped across the Atlantic in 1952. She's pictured here on 9 July 1952, docking in Southampton.

By the 1960s, the Jet Age had well and truly taken hold, and fewer and fewer passengers were choosing to make trans-Atlantic journeys by boat. Still, though, that didn't stop some major players in the cruise world from launching. The decade saw the founding of brands including Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean and Princess Cruises. This vintage 1960s snap shows the already established SS Île de France sailing for the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique.

1960s: the Jet Age

<p>As flying became more commonplace, the popularity of cruising looked set to dwindle. However, one particular TV series is often credited with keeping travelers' passion for cruising alive. <em>The Love Boat </em>– aired from the 1970s – was a comedy series that followed the crew and passengers of luxury liner SS Pacific Princess. Such was its popularity, some say it brought cruising back into the mainstream once more. This shot shows Cunard Line's Queen Elizabeth 2 in 1975. </p>

By the 1970s, lower costs meant that cruising had opened up to the masses. But the invention of the jumbo jet meant air travel had too, and the latter was the quicker, more convenient choice for traveling overseas. Therefore, the cruise reinvented itself. Ships were no longer marketed as a way to get from A to B, they were destinations in themselves, and the "leisure cruise" was its own phenomena. Here passengers enjoy the deck of P&O's SS Oronsay in 1975.

<p>The 1980s is thought to be the decade that pioneered the "cruise to nowhere", where the ship really was the destination. The SS Norway (pictured) – a lavish mega ship with room for thousands of passengers and amenities like a casino – embarked on a no-docking cruise in this decade. <a href="https://www.loveexploring.com/gallerylist/84317/the-incredible-story-of-how-cruising-has-changed-from-titanic-to-today">This is the incredible story of how cruising has changed since 1912</a>.</p>

By the 1990s Disney was spreading a little magic at sea. Disney Magic, a bold ship with black, yellow and red detailing à la Mickey Mouse, made its maiden voyage in 1998. It's pictured here that same year, cruising through Venice, and is still sailing today, complete with a spa, pools and plenty of shops and themed dining rooms.

<p>Fast-forward to the 2000s and the larger-than-life, no-expense-spared, mega cruise ships we're used to seeing today were sailing onto the scene. Cruise ships continued to expand in the 2010s while cruising itself became the fastest-growing category in the leisure travel market. Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas (pictured here) launched in 2018 as the largest cruise ship in the world (until 2022). The tide began to turn on sustainability, with several cruise ships built to run on liquefied natural gas and battery power. Another health-based factor was reducing onboard smoking to selected areas only.

2010s: bigger, better and healthier

Cruise ship dancer allegedly possessed and distributed child pornography, feds say

cruise ship from detroit

A cruise ship dancer was arrested on child pornography charges.

Law enforcement accused Jamaal Wade of possessing and sharing child sexual abuse material from at least mid-August through late January, according to a criminal complaint signed by FBI Special Agent Matthew Deragon.

Wade, at one point, sent eight videos of children as young as 2 engaging in sexual acts with adults to another user on Telegram, claiming to have “‘way more,’” according to the document filed on April 8.

The user described Wade as a professional dancer living in Washington Heights, New York, in an interview with the FBI. The person said they had exchanged child sexual abuse material with Wade and watched it together in Wade’s home.

An FBI covert employee used the person’s account to communicate with another Telegram user, also believed to be Wade, who sent them a sexually explicit video involving a male minor. Wade allegedly said the boy was 11 or 12 and said he had “‘a ton of videos,’” the complaint said. He later sent eight other videos to the covert employee.

Wade had worked as a dancer on cruise ships and was employed on one at the time of the investigation. The document does not specify which ship he was working on. He allegedly told the covert employee that he “brought his ‘collection’ of CSAM materials on board the ship,” the complaint said.

He is charged with one count of receipt and distribution of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. Case proceedings were moved from the Southern District of Florida to the Southern District of New York.

Robert Berube, an attorney who represented Wade in Florida, said in an email that he “will either retain counsel or have an attorney appointed to represent him” in New York. Another attorney for Wade was not yet listed.

Sexual assault on cruises: Alleged assaults rose last year, according to federal data

Law enforcement also reviewed records showing that Wade had been arrested for molesting an 11-year-old boy in Detroit, Michigan, in 2020, according to the complaint.

The news comes after two Disney Cruise Line crew members were arrested on child pornography charges in January. Federal authorities also said in December that a Celebrity Cruises crew member admitted to molesting children at an onboard youth center.

New deep-water channel allows first ship to pass key bridge wreckage in baltimore.

BALTIMORE – The first cargo ship passed through a newly opened deep-water channel in Baltimore on Thursday after being stuck in the harbor since the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed four weeks ago, halting most maritime traffic through the city’s port.

The Balsa 94, a bulk carrier sailing under a Panama flag, passed through the new 35-foot (12-meter) channel headed for Saint John, Canada. Two more commercial ships followed later Thursday, including a vehicle carrier headed to Panama.

Their long-awaited voyages marked an important step in the ongoing cleanup and recovery effort as crews have been working around the clock to clear thousands of tons of mangled steel and concrete from the entrance to Baltimore’s harbor.

Five vessels that have been stranded for weeks are expected to finally leave Baltimore through the new, temporary channel. Other ships are scheduled to enter the port, which normally processes more cars and farm equipment than any other in the country.

Thousands of longshoremen, truckers and small business owners have seen their jobs impacted by the collapse, prompting local and state officials to prioritize reopening the port and restoring its traffic to normal capacity in hopes of easing the economic ripple effects of the collapse. Officials have also established various assistance programs for unemployed workers and others impacted by the closure.

On Thursday morning, the Balsa 94 moved through the channel guided by two tug boats, one in front and one behind. It glided slowly past the fallen bridge and grounded Dali, the massive container ship that caused the collapse when it slammed into one of the bridge’s support columns.

Pieces of the steel span are still blocking other parts of the port’s main channel, which has a controlling depth of 50 feet (15 meters), enough to accommodate some of the largest cargo and cruise ships on the water.

The Balsa 94 is expected to arrive in Canada on Monday.

The Dali lost power and veered off course shortly after leaving the Port of Baltimore bound for Sri Lanka last month.

Six members of a roadwork crew — all Latino immigrants from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras — plunged to their deaths in the collapse. Four bodies have been recovered from the underwater wreckage while two remain missing.

A memorial for the victims near the south end of the bridge has grown in recent weeks. It now includes six large wooden crosses decorated with flags from the victims’ home countries and other personal items, including the hardhats and work boots that allowed them to provide for their families and chase the American dream. A painted canvas backdrop displays abstract scenes from the bridge collapse and salvage efforts as well as handwritten notes from the men’s loved ones.

“We want to send a message to the world that we’re here and we care,” said the artist, Roberto Marquez, who was visiting the memorial late Thursday morning. “We will be here working until they are all recovered.”

The new channel will remain open until Monday or Tuesday and then close again until roughly May 10. During the closure, crews will work to remove steel spans from the deck of the Dali and refloat the ship, which will then be guided back into the port, officials said earlier this week.

The port’s main channel is set to reopen next month after the Dali has been removed from the collapse site. That will allow for a normal flow of traffic to resume through the port.

But for now, the 35-foot depth is a substantial increase over the three other temporary channels established in recent weeks. It puts the cleanup effort slightly ahead of schedule, as officials previously said they hoped to open a channel of that depth by the end of April.

A hulking vehicle carrier named Carmen that is nearly as long as the Dali became the third commercial ship to traverse the channel Thursday afternoon. Viewed from the deck of a nearby passenger boat, it appeared to sail steadily between the marker buoys, dwarfing the cranes, barges and other wreckage removal equipment that was stationed nearby.

Even with commercial ships chugging past, crews continued the arduous process of clearing debris from the collapse site. On Thursday, they were using a crane apparatus to smash the fallen roadway into more manageable pieces that could be lifted from underwater with a giant claw.

In a court filing Monday, Baltimore’s mayor and city council called for the Dali’s owner and manager to be held fully liable for the bridge collapse, which they said could be devastating for the regional economy. They said the port , which was established before the nation’s founding, has long been an economic driver for Baltimore and the surrounding area. Losing the bridge itself has also disrupted a major east coast trucking route.

The filing came in response to an earlier petition on behalf of the two companies asking a court to cap their liability under a pre-Civil War provision of an 1851 maritime law — a routine procedure for such cases. A federal court in Maryland will ultimately decide who’s responsible and how much they owe.

In the meantime, both the FBI and the National Transportation Safety Board are conducting probes to determine what caused the ship to lose power and strike the bridge.

For the first time, we’re spotlighting new cruise ships on Travel + Leisure ’s It List, as these exceptional vessels become more and more like floating resorts — celebrity chefs, crystal chandeliers, and Rolex boutiques included.

Explora Journeys’ Explora I

Paul Brady/Travel + Leisure

It’s not every day a new cruise line arrives. The debut of the remarkable Explora I was a moment years in the making for Explora Journeys , the upstart luxury operator that aims to bring a European sensibility to the world of vacations at sea. So far, the project is a smashing success, thanks to the ship’s low-key vibe, standout food and beverage, and intriguing itineraries that visit in-demand ports in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. My own August 2023 trip on Explora I , from Copenhagen to Hamburg, Germany, included fulfilling visits to places such as Oslo and the town of Stavanger, Norway, a gateway to adventurous hiking with a postcard-perfect Old Town. The ship itself was also a destination, with its abundance of outdoor space — including an alfresco fitness center — and pools at seemingly every turn. The 461 suites, all of them with balconies, are filled with luxurious touches such as Frette linens and robes, heated marble floors, and Dyson hair dryers. But Explora I truly shines when it comes to food: During the week I was aboard, it was impossible to find a bad meal — and I was often astonished at the quality of, in particular, the pasta served in the Emporium Marketplace and the sushi on offer at Sakura, two of the nine restaurants aboard. The most ambitious of them all is Anthology, a rotating-chef concept that has seen a residency from seafood whiz Mario Ulaissi, known for his Michelin three-starred restaurant on Italy's Adriatic coast, and that recently welcomed Emma Bengtsson, from Aquavit , in New York City. Much has been made of Explora I ’s Rolex boutique — the first on any cruise ship — but for my money, the other shops on board were more interesting: The company has tapped family-owned businesses around the world to create capsule collections of resort wear, handbags, fragrances, sunglasses, and beautiful gifts that can’t be found elsewhere. From $2,050 per person for a six-day sailing. Accessible ship. — Paul Brady

Oceania Cruises’ Vista

Nick Tortajada/Courtesy of Oceania Cruises

The new Oceania Vista is in a class of its own; no really, it’s the first in Oceania Cruises ’ new Allura class. Of its 11 bars and restaurants, three are entirely new to the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings–owned brand — including a high-end cocktail spot called Founders’ Bar, serving 26 intricate drinks that use house-made syrups and top-shelf booze like Whistle Pig and parsley-infused Grey Goose. As Oceania levels up, the cruise line has produced a ship that feels more like a floating resort than the vessels that came before. There’s pickleball; a health-conscious restaurant, Aquamar, serving made-to-order salads and pressed juices; and a coffee shop that looks like one in walking distance of my home in L.A. (marble counters, gold accents, leather bar stools) and pulls an espresso shot of similar quality. Vista has more suites than others in the Oceania fleet, too: There are 14 Oceania Suites (up to 1,200 square feet); eight Vista Suites (up to 1,850 square feet); and three Owner’s Suites with Ralph Lauren Home decor and two massive terraces (2,400 square feet). But the most hotel-like touch? A celebrity chef–driven restaurant, Toscana, where Giada De Laurentiis — the ship’s godmother — supplied two recipes for the menu. As someone who watched a lot of Everyday Italian in the early aughts, I was particularly excited to try her signature, Capri-inspired lemon spaghetti, and lemon-cream sauce with grilled shrimp and capers didn’t disappoint. From $2,499 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur

Courtesy of Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ sixth ship, the Seven Seas Grandeur , sailed its inaugural season in December, joining sibling ships Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor as the newest member of the luxury fleet. The cruise line is a favorite among T+L readers for its gorgeous ships and all-inclusive pricing that covers unlimited shore excursions, dining at specialty restaurants, and even round-trip airfare. Grandeur lives up to its name thanks to stunning, art-filled spaces designed by cruise ship interior experts Studio Dado: signature restaurant Compass Rose is enchanting with interiors inspired by a fairy-tale forest; the Observation Lounge sparkles with an undulating chandelier and swanky bar; and the $11,000-per-night Regent Suite has a private en suite spa and custom Treesse mini pool. As I boarded Grandeur for the ship’s inaugural sailing, I was mesmerized by the grand staircase and glittering chandelier. And with a maximum capacity of 744 guests, I found it easy to take time to myself in the myriad of quiet spots tucked throughout the ship, whether in the Serene Spa and Wellness area, in the Library, or on the Sports Deck overlooking the ocean. Seven restaurants include specialty steakhouse Prime 7, pan-Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, and breakfast and lunch buffet La Veranda, which refines the cruise buffet experience with daily specials like paella and sushi. Several bars and lounges, a pool and hot tubs, a casino, Broadway-style productions, and cooking classes at the Culinary Arts Kitchen make the ship a destination in itself, though guests will want to take advantage of those included excursions on Caribbean, Central American, North American, and European itineraries, ranging from seven to 16 nights, during the ship’s 2024 season. From $4,669 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Elizabeth Rhodes

Silversea’s Silver Nova

Courtesy of Silversea Cruises

Carrying 728 passengers, Silver Nova is big for the luxury sector, but boasts a hugely important metric: a capacious passenger space ratio — that is, the number of guests relative to the size of the ship. Simply put, this ship offers more elbow room per passenger than almost any other cruise vessel. Silver Nova is wrapped in glass, with an asymmetrical layout; the funnel is positioned off-center, so is the pool, offering an expansive, uncluttered pool deck. Many features of the brand-new ship recall previous Silversea successes, my favorite of which is the S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program, expanded for Silver Nova . S.A.L.T. perks include a gorgeous, sea-facing lab for hands-on culinary lessons (at no additional cost), plus a new concept, the Chef’s Table, where an 11-course menu is prepared for just 24 diners. All facets of the S.A.L.T. ecosystem, including ingredients, a bar, lectures, and shore excursions, are keyed to the region Nova is sailing. While food is a drawing card for Silver Nova , accommodations also received a revamp. Tied to the theme of bringing the outside in, there are brilliant new suites found in the aft starboard corner of the ship, with wraparound balconies revealing a 270-degree view.  This is where you can tuck me in when I win the lottery and head off on a world cruise. But until then, Silver Nova will summer in Alaska and spend northern hemisphere winters in Australia and New Zealand, places where top-deck views should prove ceaselessly rewarding. From $3,250 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — David Swanson

New deep-water channel allows first ship to pass Key bridge wreckage in Baltimore

Baltimore — The first cargo ship passed through a newly opened deep-water channel in Baltimore on Thursday after being stuck in the harbor since the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed four weeks ago, halting most maritime traffic through the city’s port.

They said the port, which was established before the nation’s founding, has long been an economic driver for Baltimore and the surrounding area.
