In 2018, Jamaican singer  Dalton Harris  won X Factor when he was considered one of the most consistent contestants on the show who impressed judges every time he got on stage.  Dalton’s Dream  is a  documentary  film that delves into the life of the former X Factor winner to explore themes of fame, celebrity culture, and the music career through Harris’ life over the years.

According to the closing credits of the documentary, Dalton Harris is currently pursuing regional theatre in the UK , as stated in a review in The Guardian . The film also shows him moving into a luxurious apartment in London after his 2018 win. Moreover, the documentary deals with his experiences with homophobia, depression, suicidal thoughts, and overcoming childhood abuse.

Growing up as one of 22 siblings, Dalton Harris had a prolonged and close experience with poverty. He reportedly spent the first fifteen years of his life in two rooms. He shared the rooms with five other siblings as well as frequent lodgers. Electricity was never a facility, and food was sometimes unavailable. The siblings sometimes had to bring water from the river, as per what Dalton told the judges and audience, the Mirror reported.

During his late teenage years, Dalton Harris slept beside the river in basements, shops, and churches. His signing skills were reportedly highlighted at a Sunday school, where he was encouraged to pursue the profession.

In 2011, Dalton Harris won one million Jamaican dollars at a national talent show. This was after a teacher heard him sing and entered him into a competition. By the time he was 18, he had turned into a workaholic, following which he decided to make it to X Factor.

Dalton Harris was the last winner of X Factor as the show was canceled post-2018 owing to declining viewership. Anthony Russell and Scarlett Lee were his fellow finalists in the final season of X Factor. After his win, he reportedly won a record deal with Simon Cowell’s Syco Music, the  Caribbean National Weekly  reported.

Following his success, Dalton Harris reportedly focused on his stage career and became an active advocate of mental well-being. In 2020, he came out as pansexual. However, after he came out, the singer reportedly faced much backlash from Jamaica. Two years later, in August 2022, he announced that he is now a father to a daughter.

Earlier, Dalton Harris had expressed that he was abused as a child and that he still bears bruises from the time when he was repeatedly beaten. Although he chose not to reveal who the perpetrator was, Harris said on X Factor that he bears numerous cuts across his body. As per the Mirror, he became homeless at the age of 15. However, he managed to survive by recycling school jotters and painting houses. He carved the jotters into hearts and sold them as diaries.

Dalton’s Dream was released in UK Cinemas on February 2, 2024. The documentary also features the singer returning to Jamaica for a gig following his coming out as a pansexual person, a move widely considered brave owing to the homophobic criticism he faced following the announcement in 2020.

About Dalton Harris

A talented vocalist, Dalton Harris went from his dancehall roots to winning the 2018 final of the U.K. X-Factor, wowing audiences with his covers of Elton John, Prince, Radiohead, and Beyoncé. Born and raised in Jamaica, Harris had a difficult childhood, being one of 22 siblings and growing up in an impoverished household. Moving out at the age of 15, he pursued his education in the capital, Kingston, where he earned decent grades in school. While there he met Donovan Germain, owner of Penthouse Records. Realizing his talent, Germain managed Harris, with the young star entering 2010's Digicel Rising Stars competition. Harris came out on top, winning the show and promptly releasing a handful of singles over the next few years, including the 2014 dancehall chart number one "Pauper." More singles followed and in 2018 he teamed up with guitarist Mike Needler for the release of the album Unintentional Astronaut. That same year, Harris entered the U.K. X-Factor. Wowing the judges with his rendition of Elton John's "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word," Harris made his way to the final, performing with Emeli Sandé and James Arthur, eventually winning the show. Dalton Harris on ‘The X Factor’

UK documentary director Kim Longinotto is self-financing and shooting a feature about singer and reality star Dalton Harris

The film has the working title Dalton’s Dream and follows the Jamaican-British singer who won the UK edition of The X Factor in 2018.

Longinotto revealed details of the new project to Screen ahead of IDFA, which will screen her latest documentary, Shooting The Mafia , which debuted at Sundance.

The director describes Dalton’s Dream as an “antidote” to films like Amy , Whitney and Kurt & Courtney , which “celebrate people after they’re dead.”

“We want to know why all these people are destroyed by the industry,” said the filmmaker. “They’re all vulnerable people and their vulnerability is what attracts us to them.”

But rather than “celebrate people who crash and burn” and who are “victims,” her film about Harris is intended as a portrait of a star at the beginning of his career.

“He is a wonderful person, he has the most beautiful voice and I really hope he survives,” said Longinotto, who spotted the star while watching the reality show.

“It was love at first sight. I thought, I really love this person and I want to make a film with them about what is going to happen next. If there is any justice in the world, he will succeed.”

Longinotto is also producing the feature and shooting guerrilla style, without outside funding.

Harris is happy to be followed by the camera. “He is a free spirit and wants a witness to this journey,” said the director. “It will be a great thing for him to have in 30 or 40 years’ time, to have this really precious part of his life [documented].”

The director has followed the singer back to home in Jamaica to film him there. Longinotto added: “What Dalton has done is taken us into his life, trusted us and taken us on this journey with him.”

NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE  Singer Dalton Harris, winner of The X-Factor in 2018, shares an emotional journey of self-acceptance against the backdrop of a fickle music industry. The film follows Harris over three years as he moves from Jamaica to London to capitalize on his newfound fame, while hiding his sexual identity and battling anxiety and depression. Dalton’s story is a poignant reflection on the violence of homophobia and the possibility of personal growth. – Karen McMullen  

The first screening will be followed by a Q&A with co-director Franky M. Brown, producer Lorine Plagnol and executive producer Kevin Jennings.

Dalton’s Dream review – sensitive documentary about a vulnerable X Factor winner

The young Jamaican singer’s 2018 victory is not all it seems in this thoughtful study of a troubled life in the mass entertainment spotlight

T he acclaimed British documentary film-maker Kim Longinotto ( Divorce Iranian Style, Sisters in Law ) joins forces with director Franky Murray Brown on this pensive study of the career hopes and the cost of fame for 2018 X Factor winner Dalton Harris. Jamaican-born Harris endured an abusive childhood that left him all but estranged from his mother. His success during The X Factor reopens the wounds of his early life, and adds a few more for good measure as he becomes the target of vitriolic homophobic abuse from his home country.

The film’s handling of Harris’s embattled mental health is admirably compassionate; its observational approach captures, with uncomfortable intimacy, an increasingly isolated and vulnerable young man who lacks any kind of support system aside from the management company hoping to cash in on his talent. Dalton’s Dream prompts troubling questions about the ethics of feeding sensitive young people into the voracious celebritainment machine.

Dalton Harris shot to fame when he appeared on The X Factor in 2018, and was eventually crowned winner of the ITV show after quickly becoming a fan favourite.

The Jamaican-born singer wowed the judges week after week, and was praised by music icon and guest star Nile Rodgers who said he delivered a perfect performance every time he stood on the stage.

Dalton inadvertently became the last-ever winner of The X Factor, as creator and judge Simon Cowell announced last year there were “no plans” to renew the show, which had suffered from declining viewing figures over the years.

The musician had a hard start in life , and was one of 22 children growing up in poverty.

But he worked hard to get his big break, and Dalton beat off stiff competition from fellow finalists Anthony Russell and Scarlett Lee to win the 15th series of the long-running talent show.

His winner’s song was The Power of Love, a duet with James Arthur, who won The X Factor in 2012, and Dalton went on to release another track, Cry, in 2019.

He decided to stay out of the limelight following his win, and has instead focused on a stage career, as well as becoming an advocate for mental wellbeing.

In 2020, Dalton took to social media to announce he was pansexual, and told his fans he had a “deep realisation” about his mental health as he admitted he had contemplated suicide.

“The only reason I didn’t take my life today is because I spoke with GOD and I decided to make the biggest change I will ever make in my life,” he posted on Twitter .

“I want to live my life not running away from pain inflicted on me or the pain I inflict on anyone [sic],” he continued.

He said he had ended a relationship that was “the best thing that ever happened to me”, and vowed to stay true to himself and his feelings going forward.

“I want to experience live and be honest with myself and everyone around me in my intentions. Not hide or mask feelings and or flaws. Not judge myself. Not abuse myself and or anyone else. I am thankful for my family and everyone who is around me,” he wrote.

“Today I am deciding to change my life. And live better. And sharing this is the first step because it was hard,” Dalton told his followers.

He then shared a picture of the pansexual flag, and had a message for those who were “still attacking my sexuality”.

“My privacy is my business and whoever enters my bedroom will get there because of how I feel about them… my life is mine to live,” Dalton fired.

It was recently announced he would be joining stage icon Ruthie Henshall’s upcoming revival of the show Passion, which will take place in Manchester.

Dalton will play Count Ludovic/Lieutenant Barri in the eagerly-awaited production, set to begin in May at the Hope Mill Theatre.

“I am so excited and honoured to be playing this role in the @passionamusical and I am equally as honoured to be representing my country, my community and myself on such an incredible platform,” he wrote on Instagram , as he confirmed the exciting career news.

“I hope young performers and musicians and creatives in Jamaica see and understand my journey and know they can also create a space for themselves anywhere and not place limits on themselves,” Dalton added.

He’s also starred in the digital revival of Broadway musical Closer Than Ever, alongside Lee Mead, and teased his fans with the possibility of new music this year.

Fans of The X Factor are dying to know what happened to Dalton Harris after his journey on the series. This Jamaican singer is one of the least-known winners of The X Factor , since he stayed out of the limelight after the show. Recently, he became a father and came out as pansexual. He Now Has an Independent Musical Career

Eight years after that, Harris entered The X Factor and became the final winner of the UK-based singing competition.

Dalton Harris Became a Father, Came Out as Pansexual

The X Factor 2018 winner announced he is focusing on becoming a great father to his daughter. In addition to that, he’s also currently trying to improve on his emotional state of mind.

“I am trying to focus on being a great father to my daughter, a supportive friend/brother/son, and building a better relationship with myself,” he said.

Dalton shared selfie picture along with announcing the news on social media, he revealed that his time off was for his loved ones. Being there for his family while taking care of his mental health is a very smart move from the singer .

In October 2020, Harris came out as pansexual, which was a freeing and empowering decision for the 28-year-old singer. He even considered himself as an advocate for human equality and respect.

“I live more freely and happily now. I feel so much more empowered and just full of life.” Harris said. “I can experience more healthy relationships as well. But also I now receive more death threats and hate than ever but it is how it is.”

He revealed that despite feeling good about coming out, the downside is that is comes with hate and death threats. He relocated to UK because it allowed him to feel more accepted than in his home country of Jamaica.

Jamaica’s Digicel Rising Star and UK X-Factor winner, Dalton Harris has revealed that he’s now a father of a daughter.

The singer made the announcement on Sunday on Instagram.

“I am trying to focus on being a great father to my daughter, a supportive friend/brother/son and building a better relationship with myself,” Harris, 28, wrote alongside two recent photos of himself.

“The past few months have been the most poignant of my life, I have grown so much since then and changed as well, during that time. It’s never this easy to notice the difference in yourself but I do,” he continued.

In 2010, Harris became the youngest winner of talent competition Digicel Rising Stars and was awarded a cash prize of J$1.5 million. Eight years later he entered X Factor in the United Kingdom and won . In addition to a cash prize, he landed a record deal with Simon Cowell’s record label Syco Music.

Harris, who came out as pansexual in October 2020, said he had taken time away from social media to be “more present and [to] show up” for himself and those in his life.

“I have never been one to put on a façade , but I also am learning how and what to share whilst being transparent enough for my core supporters,” he wrote.

Harris further added that social media is low on his list of priorities, but social media is how he communicates with his supporters.

“TBH, social media has been low on the list of things I care about as well – I do not check social media or wake up and go to the phone – If it isn’t work or family related, I do not pick up or touch the phone. Other than to watch astrophysics updates. But I also value that social media is how I communicate with you all.”

  Over the years, Harris has released a few recordings such as T he Power of Love, Girl Like You , and Cry which all peaked in the top 10 of iTunes charts.

He subsequently severed ties with Simon Cowell’s record label Syco Music and has remained independent since.

“I am no longer with a label, but I will remain independent as long as I feel [it] is right. I will not release music to chase momentum or popularity. And no, I was not dropped, so please do not turn this into something it isn’t you beautiful YouTube blog folks. Good vibes to you as well,” he added.

Journey to Paris: 100 days until the start of the 2024 Summer Olympics

NEW YORK CITY, NY (WAVY) – Wednesday, April 17 marks a big milestone in the journey to Paris: 100 days until the start of the 2024 Summer Olympics.

At the Team USA Media Summit in New York City, athletes say they are ready for their shot at Olympic glory.

“I’m really excited for just like being in that Olympic atmosphere and seeing what the city is like with the games happening there,” said Fiona O’Keefe, who has qualified for Team USA in the marathon.

Officials with the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) say they’re ready to take hundreds of athletes to the City of Light.  They’ve created a training center for Olympic and Paralympic athletes to use while there.

“So in Paris, we have a high performance center and a world class facility called Athletica, where we essentially transport our Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs to Paris,” said Rocky Harris, USOPC Chief of Sport and Athlete Services.  “It has everything from sports medicine, nutrition training facilities.”

This will be the first Olympics with family and friends in the stands, since the Winter Olympics in South Korea in 2018, which is a welcome change for all involved.

“The Tokyo year, you know, I got the silver medal,” said printer Kenny Bednarek.  “It was just awkward just because the fans weren’t there, you know, it was the final race, you know, big moment and then you hear crickets… you’re kind of like ain’t nobody here.”

More people means more security challenges, something organizers are thinking about.

Nicole Deal, USOPC Chief of Security and Athlete Services, said, “We’ve been working closely with French security, the organizing committee, the State Department, especially, Diplomatic Security, and ensuring that we have a comprehensive security plan in place for Team USA.”

This will also be the first Games since South Korea without COVID testing for the athletes.  It’s a relief, but keeping athletes physically and mentally healthy is a top priority.

“All of our psychological services providers are duly certified in mental health and sports psychology,” said USOPC Chief Medical Officer Jonathan Finnoff.  “We have a ton of other resources that we provide to Team USA athletes to keep them both physically and mentally healthy.”

Organizers say there are more than 800 team USA athletes who will complete in the Paris Olympics and Paralympics.  So far, only about 15% of the team has been named, so it will be a busy few months ahead.

Tribeca Festival has revealed its feature film lineup for its 2024 festival, which includes films from actors Lily Gladstone and Michael Cera and documentaries featuring Prince, Carlos Santana and Dolly Parton.

The opening night film is documentary “Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge,” directed by Tribeca alumna Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Trish Dalton.

This year’s festival, which runs from June 5-16 in New York City, has a program of 103 feature films from 114 filmmakers spanning 48 countries. The lineup features 86 world premieres, two international premieres, six North American premieres and eight New York premieres.

“In a year of record high submissions, despite industry-wide challenges, and global tumult, our incredible filmmaking community delivered again with some of the most surprising, inspiring, hilarious, galvanizing, boundary-breaking and downright entertaining work we’ve had the privilege to feature at the festival,” said Cara Cusumano, Tribeca Festival director and SVP of programming. “Whether grappling with everything from the crisis of global democracy to the most intimate of human dramas, it was heartening to be reminded of the undeniable power of a great film to illuminate our world.”

The 23rd edition of Tribeca reflects a running theme of political activism and the power of art to spark change in the face of global catastrophe. Part of this year’s lineup is “The Cranes Call,” directed by Laura Warner, which spotlights war crimes investigators for the Clooney Foundation for Justice, led by Amal and George Clooney, as they risk their lives traveling across Ukraine to build cases against Russian soldiers and commanders, and “America’s Burning,” directed by David Smick and narrated by Michael Douglas, which dives into the economic root of hate and division.

“Each year, the Tribeca Festival reflects our culture, capturing the essence of the present moment. We’re thrilled to showcase our 23rd edition, delving into captivating explorations of artificial intelligence with Demis Hassabis, thought-provoking discussions on the future of democracy, and so much more,” said Jane Rosenthal, Tribeca Co-Founder and CEO. “Storytelling possesses a remarkable ability to bring us together, offering hope in these challenging times. Hacking Hate, (Sweden, Denmark, Norway) – World Premiere. Simon Klose’s kinetic and socially-pressing documentary follows award-winning Swedish journalist My Vingren as she goes undercover online as a white supremacist in order to expose a network of neo-Nazis and far-right organizations that are viciously fostering hate speech and extremism on a global scale. New Wave, (United States) – World Premiere. With depth and emotional resonance, Elizabeth Ai’s lively first feature is both an endearingly nostalgic exploration of the defiant Vietnamese new wave music scene, as well as a vulnerable and personal look at the filmmaker and her community’s revisiting of their unexamined past. Pirópolis, (Chile) – World Premiere. Nicolás Molina’s visually astounding Pirópolis drops the viewer in the fiery port city of Valparaíso, Chile and observes a pack of determined volunteer firefighters as they band together to combat turbulent wildfires ravaging the city. Quad Gods, (United States) – World Premiere. As the world’s first all quadriplegic esports gaming team, the Quad Gods are fierce competitors in this captivating story that challenges assumptions about disability, and spotlights the restorative power of resilience, passion and found community. Sabbath Queen, (United States) – World Premiere. Sabbath Queen is a remarkable 20 year journey in the life of Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie, a 39th generation Orthodox rabbi — and drag queen. Directed and produced by Sandi DuBowski.
