Day trips from Townsville By Car

Magnetic Island is one of our top picks for Australian island holidays . However, if you only have one day, there are several affordable and easy-to-purchase packages with SeaLink.

Magnetic Island near Townsville Queensland

  • Ferry to Magnetic Island return (from $39.50 per adult)
  • Ferry to Magnetic Island, a drink, and all-day car hire (from $111 per 2 adults)
  • Ferry to Magnetic Island and Aquascene Snorkel Tour

Check the Sealink QLD website for the full details, including concession rates and family passes.

While visiting Magnetic Island, we used the Sunbus to travel end-to-end from Picnic Bay to Horseshoe Bay. Getting off at The Forts, we walked along the short trail while spotting sleeping koalas in tree branches close to the ground. From The Forts car park, you can continue walking along Radical Bay Road to access Arthur Bay (700 m), Florence Bay (1.8 km) and Radical Bay (3 km) before finishing with a cold beer at Horseshoe Bay.

Local tip: Take plenty of water for your walks. There is a refill point near The Forts walk, but we didn’t find any along Radical Bay Road. The walk from The Forts car park to Horseshoe Bay via Radical Bay Road can take over two hours without stopping.

Florence Bay Magnetic Island Chantell Collins

If choosing a hire car, keep in mind that vehicle access for these rental cars is not allowed beyond The Forts car park to Arthur, Florence and Radical Bays. All the beaches are uniquely beautiful, and this section is especially remote if you are looking to escape the crowds.

Distance from Townsville: Nelly Bay Ferry Terminal on Magnetic Island is 13 km by sea from Breakwater Terminal in Townsville. The SeaLink ferry takes approximately 30 minutes.

If your Townsville holiday coincides with whale season, between mid-July and late August, why not take a whale watching tour? In the peak season, SeaLink has a 99% success rate of spotting these gentle giants. The three-hour boat tour includes morning or afternoon tea, depending on the time of day.

The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s most extensive living coral system stretching 2,300 kilometres along the coastline as far south as Bundaberg. While in Townsville, there are multiple ways to enjoy the Great Barrier Reef, such as a scenic helicopter, snorkelling off Magnetic Island or scuba diving at the Museum of Underwater Art (MOUA).

Museum of Underwater Art (MOUA)

MOUA is Australia’s only underwater museum. It was created by the world’s leading underwater sculptor, Jason deCaires Taylor, to help support reef restoration. There are a number of day trips to MOUA’s largest installation, The Coral Greenhouse. This includes snorkelling or scuba diving up to 20 meters in the coral reef , then scuba diving at the world heritage-listed MOUA.

Experienced divers will be thrilled to add the SS Yongala wreck dive to their Townsville list. The SS Yongala sank off Cape Bowling Green in 1911 and now rests within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Due to the remoteness of the location and the age and size of the structure, it’s home to an abundance of marine life.

Diving SS Yongala

This makes it one of the world’s top 10 dives. SeaLink’s day trip to the SS Yongala is for divers with an Open Water Diver license and a minimum of six logged dives.

Bowen is an unexpected treat and one of our favourite North Queensland day trips. The regional town has a sleepy feel to it with wide empty streets during the hot days. You’ll find the locals cooling down in the crystal blue waters of Horseshoe Bay Beach in the afternoon or boisterously clinking beer glasses at the Grand View Hotel by night.

Rotary Lookout Bowen Chantell Collins

Here are a few other recommendations for your day trip to Bowen:

  • Stop at Mount Inkerman Scenic Lookout on your way down from Townsville
  • Visit the giant mango at the Bowen Visitor Information Centre
  • Pick up the tourism guidebook at the Bowen Visitor Information Centre and follow the street art trail
  • Walk the Mother Beddock Loop (4.6 km) including Rose Bay, Murray’s Bay, and Gray’s Bay
  • See the best views of Horseshoe Bay Beach from Rotary Lookout
  • Grab a coffee and cake at Le Sorelle Coffee House

Watertank Lookout Point Bowen Chantell Colllins

Local tip: Watch the sunset from Watertank Lookout Point. This is not in the guidebook, but provides incredible 360-degree views of both the coast and farmlands.

Distance from Townsville: Bowen is 200 km from Townsville, with Mount Inkerman Scenic Lookout on the way. The entire drive takes approximately 2.5 hours.

For a shorter day trip with a relaxing drive through the mountains, check out Herverys Range Heritage Tea Rooms . The building was established in 1865 as the Eureka Hotel and has changed many hands before being restored and reopened as Herveys Range Heritage Tea Rooms in 2005.

They have an all-day breakfast menu, but the real draw card is the scones! We shared one plane scone with plum jam and cream, finding the portion size satisfying for two people. You can also order flavoured scones with a variety of sweet and savoury. Wash it down with a pot of tea or a hot cup of coffee.

Local tip: Herveys Range Heritage Tea Rooms is often fully booked, especially on weeks and during peak season. Call ahead to make a reservation to avoid missing out.

After a delicious morning tea, take a stroll along the grassy walkway throughout the property. This gentle 1.5 km trail is well signed, sharing plenty of historical tidbits and taking you via a pond.

Distance from Townsville:  The entire drive takes approximately 45 minutes. Herveys Range Heritage Tea Rooms is 45 km from Townsville, with Pipers Lookout on the way.

Take a day trip to the Australian outback and former gold rush town of Charters Towers. This historic town is best explored on foot with over sixty heritage-style buildings on or around Mosman and Gill Streets. On Mossman Street, you’ll also find the Charters Towers Visitor Information Centre, which is the starting point for the Ghosts of Gold Heritage Trail .

Charters Towers

The Towers Hill Lookout is a five-minute drive south of the town center, providing the best views, engaging storyboards, WWII bunkers, and picnic tables to enjoy a packed lunch.

Distance from Townsville: Charters Towers is 137 km from Townsville and takes approximately 1.5 hours by car.

Once you start heading North of Townsville along the Bruce Highway, you’re on The Great Green Way . This patch of highway from Townsville to Cairns has been dubbed nature’s playground due to the high concentration of natural attractions, tropical islands, and national parks.

Little Crystal Creek, Paluma - Andrew Watson

One of the first national parks you’ll encounter is Paluma Range National Park in the southern part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area . Being in the dry end of the tropics, you may notice that the forests are different with hoop pines compared to kauri pines in the northern Wet Tropics.

Paluma Range National Park has enough waterfalls, walking tracks, and viewpoints to keep you occupied for days. However, if you are short on time, we’d recommend Little Crystal Creek, Big Crystal Creek, and Jourama Falls as they are closer to the road and require less driving time.

  • Little Crystal Creek: A freshwater creek framed by a stone arch bridge built in the 1930s. Take a refreshing dip in the swimming holes below the waterfalls
  • McClellands Lookout: From the car park, it’s just a 300 m walk to McClellands Lookout with views of Halifax Bay and the Palm Islands
  • Cloudy Creek Falls: This 4 km track begins close to McClellands and leads to a small series of waterfalls.
  • Birthday Creek Falls: A short 1 km walk to Birthday Creek Falls where you can swim at the base of the waterfall.
  • Big Crystal Creek: There are two main attractions at Big Crystal Creek. The Rockslides walking track is 400 m return to swimming holes with smooth rocks that act as natural slides. Then Paradise Water Hole is a wider pool of water where you can snorkel to see fish and turtles
  • Jourama Falls : After turning off the Bruce Highway, there is a short 6 km drive to the day area which includes 3 km of gravel road and a small water crossing. We visited in a 2WD in September without issues but it may be more difficult in the wet season. There is a 3 km track to Jourama Falls lookout. Visitors also walk through riverbeds to swim upstream in the rock pools.

 Jourama Falls

Distance from Townsville: Jourama Falls is the further point north from Townsville at 93 km and is about a one hour and fifteen-minute drive.

Next on The Great Green Way is the town of Ingham – not related to Ingham’s Chickens. This is a proud cane growing region with a strong history of Italian immigration. A visit to Mercer Lane Mosaics is a fun way to learn about Ingham. While you’re here, visit TYTO Wetlands and Parklands for spotting birds and agile wallabies.

Driving west from Ingham, it’s another hour to reach Wallaman Falls. This is the highest permanent, single-drop waterfall in Australia. After parking in the day-use area for the Wallaman Falls lookout, we recommend taking the Djyinda walk, which ends at the base of the falls. It’s a steep 3.2km return track but well worth it for the heart-thumping view at the bottom. For a gentler walk, there’s the 800m return Banggurru track close to the camping area.

Wallerman Falls North Queensland

Distance from Townsville: Ingham is 112 km, with Wallaman another 51 km from Townsville. The entire drive takes approximately two hours and fifteen minutes one way.

Another 53 km north of Ingham is the coastal town of Cardwell. Walk the Cardwell Jetty and foreshore, enjoying the views of Rockingham Bay and Hinchinbrook Island. Along the path, there are memorials and sculptures, including three large Bagu, which were inspired by the fire-making of the Traditional Owners of North Queensland.

Cardwell is a great place to stop for lunch, with many local restaurants and takeaways. We recommend Jesse’s Cardwell Pies. He parks his van closer to the southern end of the foreshore and usually sells out of his delicious pastries by 1 pm.

Local tip: During the dry season, the Cardwell Spa Pool can look more like a brown puddle so check recent reviews on Google Maps before going.

The Cardwell Forest Drive is 26 km if you complete the entire loop with stops at Cardwell Lookout, Attie Creek Falls, Dead Horse Creek, and Cardwell Spa Pool. As we were short of time and cautious of the gravel road with a 2WD, we only visited Cardwell Spa Pool from Ellerbeck Road. This swimming hole is mainly well known because of its striking blue colour when full.

Distance from Townsville: Cardwell Spa Pool is the further point north of Townsville at 175 km and is about a two-hour drive.

Australia has so many wild and wonderful islands; it’s hard to know which ones are deserving of a full day of your holiday itinerary. What makes Hinchinbrook unique is the Jurassic-like landscape and cloud-covered mountains. There are no resorts or restaurants in this completely undeveloped paradise. Only remote camping areas with a maximum of 40 people are allowed at one time.

Hinchinbrook North Queensland

In the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, Hinchinbrook is most well-known for the 32km Thorsborne Trail. This is one of the best multi-day hikes in the world and top 10 in Australia . The Thorsborne trail is usually completed over four days, starting at Ramsay Bay in the north and ending at George Point at the island’s south end.

Hitchinbrook Island North Queensland (1)

Day-trippers can also visit Hinchinbrook is with a fishing charter company.

Distance from Townsville: A day trip from Townsville to Hinchinbrook Island will require an especially early start. You’ll need to drive 140km to the Dungeness boat ramp to board your vessel, which takes approximately one hour and 45 minutes. All Westofish trips to Hinchinbrook Island depart at 7 am unless a private tour is booked.

2. Castle Hill

Castle Hill Lookout Townsville

If you want to exercise, consider hiking up to Castle Hill. We saw plenty of people walking, jogging and biking up the hill. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t reach the top on my first attempt! Hats off to all the people that do.

This iconic rock-red monolith rises 286 meters above sea level and makes for amazing pictures for the gram.

It’s an easy hike because the walking track is well-maintained. However, it is steep in many places. You’ll get a beautiful 360-degree view of the town, the surrounding islands, and the Coral Sea from the top. We think it’s a breathtaking view, especially out to sea.

3. Brunch At Harvey’s Range Heritage Tea Rooms

High tea

After working up an appetite at Castle Hill, head to Harvey’s Heritage Tea Rooms, one of the top-rated coffee places in town. Try their famous Kopi Luwak Coffee, or book a Hi-Tea and enjoy their Victorian selection of cakes, savouries, scones and sandwiches.

Start your tour by renting a car to explore more of the Island. There are 23 incredible bays to discover during your magnetic island day trip from Townsville. The island is a beautiful place to explore for a day or a few days if you want to take your car and van over.

The most popular ones include Alma Bay (for the crystal-clear waters and healthy reef), Geoffrey Bay (more reef and friendly wallabies), and Horseshoe Bay (for kayaking to secluded bays and reefs).

Remember that rental vehicles aren’t allowed to pass further than The Forts car park, so check the rules before renting.

6. Yongala Wreck Dive Trip

1 9

If you’re an experienced diver and want to explore the Great Barrier Reef from Townsville, you’ll enjoy the SS Yongala dive , which is one of the world’s top 10 dives. Kev’s done this dive and thoroughly enjoyed the day.

The Yongala was a luxury passenger steamship that sank off Cape Bowling Green in 1911 and wasn’t found for decades. It now rests within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Because the area is remote (almost 3 hours away), the wreck is populated with rich, colourful marine life.

Due to the depth, you’ll need an Open Water Diver license or six logged dives to access it. You can choose your pickup spot in Townsville, and the tour company’s team will pick you up in the vessel, brief you and send you with a dive leader to the wreck.

Kev did the Yongala dive a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. He saw the largest number of sea snakes he’s ever seen diving there.

Finding Things To Do In Townsville

day-trips-from-townsville

Townsville is a destination which is glazed over by most who visit North Queensland. It’s a place that often serves as a fuel stop and a break between the long drive from Airlie Beach to Cairns. But, while most people would just pass through, Townsville is a spot that should be on everybody’s radar!

You’ll find so many things to do in Townsville. Think of islands on par with the tropical islands of the Caribbean and misty rainforest towns with secluded and tranquil waterfall gems even the locals aren’t aware of. Discover country towns that embody the true meaning of country living only a heartbeat away, and not to mention the largest World Heritage Site in the world, the Great Barrier Reef is just off the shore!

With so many incredible day trips from Townsville to discover, as a local, I’m going to share some of the best with you in this article.

1. Visit Magnetic Island

20minute ferry ride from Townsville

day-trips-from-townsville-magnetic-island

When it comes to day trips from Townsville, Magnetic Island, or ‘Maggie’ as the locals say, is an absolute must visit. It’s a popular destination for backpackers in Australia, but it also packs a punch for holidays for Aussies too. With it being just a 20 minute ferry ride away from the Townsville Terminal via Sealink Queensland, it’s an easy place to getaway from it all.

I recommend starting your day at Alma Bay, one of the most beautiful beaches in North Queensland. There are lifeguards on duty year-round, crystal clear water, giant boulders to climb, and a healthy fringing reef that follows the rocks on either side of the bay. Adjacent to Alma Bay is Geoffrey Bay, home to more reef, and an abundance of stingrays and rock wallabies. We recommend taking a stroll around here to feed the rock wallabies and watch the stingrays float gracefully by the shore, however if possible, dusk is the best time to do so.

Horseshoe bay is the next stop on the list. Here you can swim, hire jet skis and kayaks, and take a hike to one of the more secluded bays. If you are someone who loves the water, hiring a one-hour kayak is a great way to explore some of the more hidden Coral bays nearby. There is also the option for hiking to even more secluded bays from Horseshoe.

Strap on your hiking shoes and venture into the gumtrees to explore Balding Bay (a nude beach) and Radical bay (the most stunning crystal waters). Access to this 4-km trail can be found on the far right side of the bay. After a delicious pub meal at the Marlin Bar Tavern in Horseshoe Bay, we recommend tackling the 4km Forts Walk- a fascinating historic WWII complex that was used between 1943 and the end of the Pacific War in 1945. The 360-degree rainforest and reef views here are stunning. Just don’t forget to look up; the path is home to one of the largest numbers of koalas in Australia!

If you are planning on visiting Magnetic Island for a longer period of time, additional spots to visit would include Picnic Bay and Bungalow Bay Koala Sanctuary where you can have breakfast with the Koalas. And don’t forget to the famous cane toad races on Wednesday nights, held at The Arcadia Hotel.

2. Indulge In The Luxury Orpheus Island

day-trips-from-townsville-orpheus-island

Discover the luxury Great Barrier Reef Island called Orpheus Island, located just 80km north of Townsville. Although you might be thinking it’s going to cost a fortune to visit, you can actually take an Orpheus Island day trip with Sealink Queensland. Orpheus Island is the kind of place that should be on your Australia bucket list. They hold wellness retreats here as it’s got the kind of vibe to get away from it all in paradise.

You’ll have access to morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea, scientific presentations on the biology of the reef, as well as plenty of snorkelling and hiking. The tour allows you several hours of pure paradise exploring. Swim and snorkel amongst the turtles and sharks of the coral reef. Hike the tropical rainforest around the island with a guide, or relax under the shade of the palm trees.

The Orpheus Island day tour runs during the winter months during humpback whale season. If you happen to stumble upon migrating whales during your tour, most guides will meander around them so you can take photos!

If you choose to stay at the resort, you can only get there via helicopter, which is an opportunity to see the Great Barrier Reef in all its glory! The resort is all-inclusive and limited to 28 people at a time as a way of preserving the natural environment and keeping it exclusive and secluded.

3. Dive At Two Insane Great Barrier Reef Diving Spots

1h20m drive South // 100km

MOUA-museum-of-underwater-art-queensland

Discover two of the best place to dive in Great Barrier Reef, just off Townsville! With the first Museum Of Underwater Art in Australia (known as MOUA), and the best dive wreck in Australia at Yongala Dive, you’re literally spoilt for choice at these incredible sites to choose between.

The Museum of Underwater Art (MOUA) is the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and acts as a platform to encourage discussion around reef conservation and restoration, as well as the indigenous history and their connection to the reef. The MOUA is located approximately 80k off Townsville on the John Brewer Reef and is essentially an underwater greenhouse with a beautiful mix of art and science. The structure is a staggering 72m and fringed by coral reef- able to be snorkelled and dived while on your tour.

The second-and equally unique- attraction along the Great Barrier Reef is the Yongala Dive site. This famous Great Barrier Reef dive site is 89km South-East of Townsville and is a world-famous shipwreck of what was once a luxury passenger steamship that sank during a cyclone.

In the early 1900s, the shipwreck disappeared with no survivors and wasn’t found for decades. It has since earned itself a reputation for being home to some of the best diving in Australia as it is mostly intact and now has a flourishing eco-system of underwater wildlife. While the site is a popular destination for many tourists, it is only accessible by those that have a dive certificate.

Check availability for Yongala Dive here on Get Your Guide.

4. Explore Paluma Range National Park Waterfalls & Walks

1h20m drive North // 85km

ethel-creek-falls-day-trips-from-Townsville

The Paluma village and rainforest is a very special place that is certainly worth visiting on a day trip from Townsville. Nestled in the misty rainforest the village is embedded in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area and surrounded by National Parks.

The good news is, the weather is significantly cooler than the heat Townsville faces, so if you’re looking to cool down in the Summer months, it’s a good idea to head here. In many months of the year when the mountain is covered in mist, you can smell the smoke from wood stoves and backyard fires throughout the village.

While there aren’t tours that do day trip to Paluma, it is well worth hiring a car for a day and checking it out. If you choose to visit Paluma, the McClelland’s Lookout is one of the best spots to take it all in. The lookout is surrounded by picnic tables, toilets, and plenty of grassy areas for a picnic, so it is a great location to stop for a little while and take in the views. From McClelland’s Lookout, you can continue along the surrounding rainforest paths in several directions, but we recommend taking the Witt’s Lookout path which has both an upper and lower lookout worth visiting.

The tracks through the Paluma rainforest are abundant with rainforest life, including bush turkeys, and hundreds of species of birds. Be sure to take your time to appreciate the sounds and smells the place provides. Take the opportunity to discover some of the best Paluma National Park waterfalls including the stunning Cloudy Creek Falls, the Ethel Creek Falls, and the beautiful 20-metre cascading Birthday Creek Falls. I recommend making a day of it and packing plenty of food and water to get you through the adventuring!

5. Swim At Little and Big Crystal Creek

1h drive North // 75km

Little-Crystal-Creek-day-trips-from-townsville

Did you know Little and Big Crystal Creek are two of the most popular day trips from Townsville? While you can pair these with your trip to the Paluma Rainforest, it is worthwhile doing them separately so you can fully appreciate both. These two are some of the best rainforest waterfalls in Townsville to swim in on hot days.

Big Crystal Creek is located 1 hour (approximately 70km) north of Townsville and is a large swimming hole and creek with crystal clear freshwater, rockslides, and a camping day-use area with picnic tables, toilets, and showers.

Little Crystal Creek, despite its name, is actually much bigger than its brother, Big Crystal Creek. The Little Crystal Creek area is further north, along the road to Paluma, and features a stunning waterfall, more rockslides, and an arched bridge that makes photo opportunities incredible.

As some of the best waterfalls in Queensland to swim in, with waterholes scattered along the river next to plenty of picnic seating, the best spots are the ones you find by meandering up the river a little bit. You can spend hours admiring the rainforest, watching the fish swim circles around you, and basking in the sunshine with refreshing water at your fingertips.

Make sure you pack plenty of snacks and water to combat the year-round North Queensland sun and ensure that the car is filled with enough fuel, as servo stations are limited along the Bruce Highway

6. Wander Up Jourama Falls

1h15m drive North // 95km

journama-falls-day-trips-from-townsville

Jourama Falls is probably one of the most famous day trips from Townsville. Despite being a little over an hour from Townsville, it is well worth the trip, with many people often including this on their day trip to the two Crystal Creeks. However, a trip to Jourama falls should be one on its own. The falls are 99m tall and abundant in their secluded swimming holes.

When arriving at Jourama Falls in Townsville, you’ll find yourself next to campgrounds with normal camp amenities like a toilet. You wander through the rainforest on a 2km track over magical boardwalks and creeks that feel as though you’re stepping into another world. This track takes you up to the surrounding rocks nearby the falls. The track continues up to the falls lookout, or you can wander upstream to find a spot for a refreshing dip.

The Townsville day trip consists of relaxation, picnic foods, and swimming, and I recommend packing accordingly for all three. Finally, don’t forget to take a quick stop at Frosty Mango on the way home, just a few km up the road. The mango smoothies are to die for, with fresh, homegrown Bowen mangoes and the most delicious fruit ice cream of tropical flavours you’ll ever try. Don’t forget to take a snap in front of the giant mango either!

7. Marvel At The Incredible Wallaman Falls

2h drive North // 155km

Wallaman-Falls-day-trips-from-townsville

Wallaman Falls in Queensland is one of the best places to visit on your East Coast of Australia road trip. It is Australia’s largest single drop waterfall and is located just around 2 hours from Townsville, outside of Ingham. The falls are magnificent and make for a once-in-a-lifetime day trip.

Located within the Girringin National Park, Wallaman Falls is in the mountains of the UNESCO World Heritage Wet Tropics, and although the drive may seem long, it is well worth it. Upon arriving at the falls, there is a lookout at the top where you get incredible views over the 268-metre tall single plugging waterfall. Due to the significant height and the volume of water North Queensland Tropics receives in the wet season, the mist often rises to coat the surrounding rainforest in clouds, but when it clears, it is a sight to behold.

Depending on your hiking ability, there is a 3.2km trail right down to the base of the falls. While the track is steep in sections and means climbing over slippery rocks, it winds through the rainforest and offers sneaky glances up at the waterfall above as you get closer and closer to it. And, when you reach the base, it makes every slippery step worth it. The views are absolutely incredible!

If you choose to do the hike, allow several hours to do it safely and still have some time at the bottom. Just make sure you travel prepared with enough food and water for the day, as well as swimmers and some sturdy hiking shoes.

8. Swim at Abergowrie State forest

1h50m drive North // 145km

Broadwater-Creek-walk-day-trips-from-townsville

The Abergowrie State Forest, located in the scenic Herbert River Valley is a beautiful day trip from Townsville which can be paired with your visit to Wallaman Falls. The forest is 2-hours from Townsville and is rarely visited by locals so is often a secluded and tranquil day spent solely amongst nature.

The state forest consists of an open eucalyptus forest, an exotic pine plantation, the winding Broadwater Creek and rest area. It is in the heart of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, near the Hinchinbrook channel. The day rest and camping area is a great spot to relax, swim, and have a picnic.

If you choose to visit Broadwater, you can cool off with a swim in the pools along Broadwater Creek, birdwatch in the rainforest, or take the 1.6km return walk through the rainforest to admire the magnificent Broadwater fig tree. Whatever you choose to do, be sure to take the time to listen to the sounds of the forest come alive around you.

9. Brunch At Hervey’s Range Heritage Tea Rooms

45min drive West // 50km

Hervey's-Range-Tea-Rooms-day-trips-from-Townsville

The Hervey’s Range Heritage Tea Rooms is one of the oldest buildings in Queensland and is one of the best day trips from Townsville. The tea rooms are located 30 minutes from Townsville along the Hervey’s Ranges and were a structure that was built in 1865 just one year after Townsville was settled.

Back in the days of the Goldrush, the tea rooms were a pivotal stopping point between Townsville and the Goldfields but now stands as a mountain-top café with an extensive garden. If you visit the tea rooms on a day trip from Townsville, make sure to stop at Piper’s Lookout on your way to the tea rooms for panoramic views over the town. There are a large variety of teas available, as well as a full brunch menu. If you choose to visit, make sure to try the scones. They are absolutely delicious.

10. Explore Country Town, Charters Towers

1h30m drive South West // 136km

Drive-in-theatre-Charters-Towers

When it comes to day trips from Townsville, nothing is better than adventuring into the heart of country Australia. Charters Towers, a small country town just one hour away from Townsville, is exactly that- and there is so much to do here. Charters Towers was an old gold mining town back in the gold rush days and was once one of the biggest and most thriving towns in all of Queensland.

To truly appreciate Charters Towers, dedicate at least two days for exploring. While the town itself has heritage-listed buildings and beautiful views, one of the highlights of Charters Towers is visiting the Texas Longhorns that are just 10km from the town at Leighton Park.

Leighton Park is home to Australia’s largest herd of purebred Longhorns and is a family-owned business that loves teaching locals about them. They offer a horse-drawn wagon ride that transports you back to the wild west. You can enjoy a traditional Australian meal of cooked damper and billy tea. Or, you can dress up in full cowboy gear and pretend you’re a true cowboy living in the country while admiring the magnificent animals.

One of the best things to do in Charters Towers which cannot be missed is the Tors Drive-In Cinema, the oldest drive-in theatre in Australia! It’s been open continuously since 1966! The drive-in theatre is also family-owned and aims to recapture the nostalgia of the drive-in era. They have a snack-bar with traditional drive-in foods, as well as two blockbuster movies each night to choose from. If you stay overnight, there is plenty of accommodation available, as well as free camping spots along the Burdekin River such as the popular Macrossan Bridge.

11. Visit Hinchinbrook Island

1h40m drive North (to the Hinchinbrook Lookout) // 128km

zoe-falls-hinchinbrook-island-queensland

If there’s one place you should make the effort to visit when looking for day trips from Townsville, it’s Hinchinbrook Island. This incredible Queensland island looks like something from the dinosaur era. Although it’s famed for being home to the Thorsborne Trail, a four day hike…

…the 32km Great Walk is known as being one of the top ten walks in the world!

It’s not for the faint hearted though. You’ll need to carry everything for this difficult hike, including water and camping gear.

But, did you know you can do a Hinchinbrook Island day trip? You’ll need to book the Hinchinbrook Island day trip with Absolute North Charters. They offer an afforable day trip to Hinchinbrook Island, which will drop you off at the famous Zoe Bay. Climb up the steep 500 metres and you’ll be able to experience the best infinity pool in the world (in my eyes!).

12. Cardwell Spa Pools

2hr drive North // 175km

cardwell-spa-pools-day-trips-from-townsville

Cardwell Spa Pools became a bit of an Instagram institution! The turquoise waters are a sight to be seen! You’ll drive through the Cardwell Forest, before coming to the famous swimming hole in Queensland. Be careful if visiting during wet season as you might not make it to the pools if there is flooding along the river.

13. Enjoy The Beaches In Bowen

2h30m Drive South // 200km

bowen-day-trip-from-townsville

Although Bowen is a 2h30m drive from Townsville, it’s worth mentioning because it’s home to some stunning beaches. Although the town is a little forgotten about, there’s a fantastic caravan park at the beautiful Horseshoe Bay. It’s becoming increasingly popular spot to stop off at on an East Coast road trip and has seen popularity on Instagram a lot recently.

Make sure you take a photo at The Big Mango when you come into town, and buy some frozen mango inside the tourist information centre there, it’s delicious!

Further Away

We’re adding in a couple of nearby places to include on your road trip in Queensland, which could also easily tag onto day trips from Townsville too.

14. Airlie Beach

3h30m drive from Townsville // 272km

ocean-rafting-whitsundays-south-whitehaven-beach

Although Airlie Beach and Whitsundays are a good 3h30m drive from Townsville, it’s worth mentioning. If you’re looking for places to visit in Queensland, or places to visit on East Coast of Australia, you’ll more than likely stop off in Airlie Beach on your travels to visit Whitsundays.

With plenty of things to do in Airlie Beach and Whitsundays, you could easily spend a good five days here. Check out some of our guides below for inspiration:

Check Out Our Airlie Beach And Whitsundays Guides 37 Best Things To Do In Airlie Beach & Whitsundays 21 Best Whitsundays Tours In 2021 (The Ultimate Guide) Is Ocean Rafting Whitsundays Day Trip Worth It?

15. Mission Beach

2h50m drive North // 235km

mission-beach-day-trips-from-Townsville

Whilst many people drive straight from Townsville to Cairns, definitely stop off in Mission Beach. This little gem of a place is home to the famous cassowary animal. You’ll see loads of signs in and around town asking you to be careful whilst driving around as they often pop out of the trees and onto the road with their babies. This is one of the only places in Australia you might be lucky enough to spot them.

There’s loads of beaches in Mission Beach to choose from, hikes and so much more!

Get Exploring. Here are 7 Of the Best Day Trips Around Townsville

By [email protected].

day trips out of townsville

Guest blog by Alicia Masters – North Queensland Tours

We are lucky enough to live in one of the most magical parts of the world, but have you ventured past the bright(ish) lights of Townsville lately?  Have you had family or friends come to stay and become unstuck as to where to take them or what to show them? Fear not! We have teamed up with North Queensland Tours to show you some of the best day trips and activities that Townsville and its surrounding areas have to offer. North Queensland Tours can research, book, and manage your holiday to ensure that it’s one to remember.

Now, lets get exploring!

Wallaman Falls

TLC said you shouldn’t go chasing waterfalls, but we strongly encourage you to chase away! Wallaman Falls is the highest single drop waterfall in Australia at 268 metres. That means it’s big, extremely spectacular and you can hear the huge amounts of water rushing over the edge as you stand at the viewpoint gazing across the gorge and the Herbert River Valley. You will need a vehicle to experience the falls. Once you arrive you can do rainforest walks and if you fancy taking your own packed lunch you can enjoy a picnic.

Little Crystal Creek and Paluma

day trips out of townsville

The clear waters and pristine waterfalls at Little Crystal Creek make for the perfect weekend getaway. Seasoned Towsnvillians know that it is the perfect place to cool off in the summer heat, however in winter it can get quite chilly (or perhaps it’s the perfect temperature if you’re coming from the cooler temps of the southern states!).  The mountain water cascades under a picturesque heritage-listed stone arch bridge built in the 1930s and makes the perfect spot for a happy snap. If you’re a history buff or keen bird watcher, the day trip to Crystal Creek and Paluma includes a stop at the local Paluma Community Hall for a quick lesson in all things local as well as plenty of opportunities to spot some local wildlife. You will need a vehicle to experience Little Crystal Creek and Paluma.

Sailing Island Tours

With a backyard that includes Cleveland Bay and the white beaches of Magnetic Island, a sailing boat is the perfect way to get out there and explore. With everything from half day tours, sunset sailing tours and private charters, NQ Tours has a tour to set every occasion. Now that you mention it, who needs an occasion?! Grab your gang and book a sunset sail and watch the day fade away, whilst sipping on a glass of bubbles.

Kayak Tours

Once you’ve finished hitting the high seas of Cleveland Bay and are ready for something a little more hands on, why not book a kayaking tour around Townsville or Magnetic Island? Take a leisurely paddle out to Horseshoe Bay Point before drifting back over coral gardens to see sea turtles, or enjoy a paddle around the northern bays such as Balding Bay or Radical Bay? If you fancy staying on the mainland, perhaps a sunset kayaking tour on the Ross River is more your style.

Snorkelling and Great Barrier Reef Tours

day trips out of townsville

You don’t need to head to Cairns to experience first-hand the beauty and wonder of the Great Barrier Reef. Lodestone Reef is part of the central section of the Great Barrier Reef and features white coral sand sea floors, occupied by hundreds of reef fish, and colourful coral walls and marine animals.

Depths at Lodestone range from 1 metre to 20 metres making it ideal for snorkellers, beginner as well as experienced divers. Big schools of trevally and bait fish are common as are a myriad of colourful reef fish including Parrot fish, Maori wrasse, Clown fish, Angel fish, Turtles, Stingrays, White tip and Black tip reef sharks. Full day trips to the reef include, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, as well as all your snorkelling equipment.

Reef Fishing

Fancy trawling for Spanish Mackrel or reeling in a large mouth Nannygai? Reef fishing off Townsville is popular for good reason. With close proximity to the reef, there are a wide variety of fish to be caught including Red Emperor, Coral Trout and plenty of cods. With everything from a 12 hour trip to a 5 day trip, your dream fishing expedition is only moments away.

Outback Tours

Escape the big smoke and head west.  Ravenswood was once a thriving gold mining town, however today it is a beautifully preserved, magical gold mining ghost town with some beautiful country pubs and a whole lot of history.  Explore the historic town on a day trip or stay overnight in a local haunted hotel! Whilst your out west why not swing by Charters Towers to get up close and personal with some Texas Longhorns!

North Queensland Tours is owned and operated by Alecia and Josh Masters who are proud Townsville locals and share a passion for all things outdoors and adventure. Not only can they help you experience the best their region has to offer, they can book and manage any of the tours described above, plus many more, along with accommodation, transfers and ferry tickets. With tours to suit all budgets and interests, you can guarantee that you will be experiencing North Queensland the best way – the local way.

Special event: Townsville to Australian Italian Festival – 1.25-hour drive

Hot on the heels of the Sweet Days, Hot Nights Festival is the Australian Italian Festival, one of the longest running festivals of its kind in Australia. Held annually in June, the festival celebrates Italian culture and mouth-watering locally produced food. To get there, head north on the Bruce Highway (A1) to Ingham.

The predominant culture in the Hinchinbrook Shire is Italian. This is a result of the many Italian immigrants who came to Ingham in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s to work in the cane fields, and who stayed to raise their families in North Queensland. While the Australian Italian Festival’s focus is on the Italian culture, it is also inclusive of our First Nations people and other immigrants who have made Ingham and the Hinchinbrook Shire so culturally diverse.

Over the festival weekend, the TYTO Parklands are transformed into a huge piazza with nonstop world-class entertainment, concerts, competitions, free amusement rides for the children, market stalls, Italian food from professional Italian chefs and from the best local Italian Nonna’s!

Cost : Adults from $9 per person, children under 18 free

Opening Hours : Saturday and Sunday of the festival weekend

Address : 73/75 Mcilwraith Street, Ingham

You can stroll through the tropical fruit orchards before heading into the café, where you can also purchase a range of seasonal and unusual tropical fruits. Grumichana anyone?

5 Amazing Day Trips From Townsville, Australia

Exploring Magnetic Island National Park

Located on the Great Barrier Reef in North Queensland, there are plenty of places to explore around Townsville. Go west to historic Charters Towers, east to the Great Barrier Reef, and north to Paluma. Here are the five best day trips you need to take from Townsville.

Paluma is a 45-minute drive north of Townsville. 1,000 metres (3,280 feet) above sea level, Paluma is found at the southern edge of the Wet Tropics of Queensland , a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The rainforest hideaway is home to bushwalks, diverse birdlife, and cute cafes. Leading up to the village, you’ll pass Little Crystal Creek, with its 1930s stone arch bridge, waterfalls, and freshwater swimming hole. Big Crystal Creek also has a large swimming hole and picnic area, and is always filled with locals on weekends.

Little Crystal Creek in Paluma

Magnetic Island

The most popular day trip from Townsville is to Magnetic Island , which is only a 20-minute ferry ride from the mainland. More than half of the island is protected by Magnetic Island National Park. The most popular activities on the island include bushwalking, koala spotting , swimming in one of the 23 sheltered bays, hand feeding wallabies , and enjoying watersports at Horseshoe Bay. Although you can get a bus to Magnetic Island’s main bays, for an unforgettable experience, hire a topless Barbie car from Tropical Travel .

Exploring Magnetic Island National Park

Orpheus Island

Orpheus Island is located between Cairns and Townsville on the Great Barrier Reef . It’s surrounded by fringing reef, so it’s a great place to snorkel and dive. You can expect to see 1,100 of the Great Barrier Reef’s 1,500 fish species swimming around Orpheus Island. SeaLink Queensland does organised day trips from Townsville to Orpheus Island’s Yanks Jetty, which includes a buffet lunch and lots of free time for snorkelling and swimming. For a more luxurious day trip to Orpheus Island, there’s the option to arrive via helicopter. There’s a gourmet picnic lunch and snorkelling included in that day trip as well.

Charters Towers

Located about a 1.5-hour drive west of Townsville, Charters Towers is a historic outback town. It boomed and became a gold rush town at the end of the 19th century, and was Queensland’s second largest town for awhile. Fortunately, many of Charters Towers’ heritage buildings are still intact, including the Stock Exchange Building and Arcade, and Lyall’s Store. When in Charters Towers, pan for gold at the The Miners Cottage , and check out the views from Towers Hill Lookout.

Great Barrier Reef

Explore the Great Barrier Reef on a day trip with Adrenalin Dive . The local company does tours to Lodestone Reef several times a week. With depths from one to 20 metres (three to 65 feet), this spot is great for snorkelers, as well as introductory and certified dives. Some of the fish regularly spotted include parrotfish, Maori wrasse , angelfish, and clownfish. You may also see turtles, and white and blacktip reef sharks. For avid divers, Adrenalin Dive also does day trips to the SS Yongala Wreck, which is one of the world’s best dive sites .

Every weekend is an adventure

One day in townsville: things to do in the capital of north queensland.

  • Post published: 31 March 2022
  • Post category: Australia / Oceania/South Pacific / Queensland

There are many amazing day trips from Townsville . But you’ll also need to find things to do in Townsville city at least for your arrival or departure day. I visited the capital of North Queensland a few times and spent one day in Townsville before visiting Magnetic Island and diving the SS Yongala .

There’s a map at the end of the post to help you plan your visit and tips on where to stay in Townsville too if you haven’t booked your accommodation yet.

Here are my favourite things to do in Townsville when you only have one day in the city:

1. walk along the strand.

day trips out of townsville

Townsville has a lovely beachfront walking path. For more than two kilometres, you get superb views of Magnetic Island. The palm trees and magnificent fig trees make The Strand look very tropical. I prefer to walk towards Kissing Point rather than the port as I find the views look better this way.

Along the Strand, you’ll find a saltwater rockpool, beaches with nets where you can swim even during the marine stinger season, playgrounds for kids, outdoor exercise equipment (including a basketball field) for adults…

If you don’t want to walk, Neuron and Beam e-bikes and scooters are available along The Strand.

New to Beam? You can download their app here and use the referral code ydXTF (it’s case-sensitive). We’ll both get free credits! New to Neuron? Register here or use the coupon code 12D5HSYE, and we’ll both get a free 10-minute ride.

2. Brunch, lunch or coffee with a view

C-bar in Townsville next to the water

It’s good timing to feel hungry before, after or during your walk on the Strand. There are many restaurants, cafés and small shops to buy food and drinks. We particularly liked the views from Longboard Bar and Grill and C-Bar . The  Watermark and Anelay rooftop across the road can be good choices too. Surf Clubs are often an excellent option to eat with sea views in Australia, and Townsville Surf Club seems to be open for breakfast.

But if you want a drink in the evening, Flinders Street is known to be a lively street after 9 pm.

3. The Strand Jetty and the Ocean Siren sculpture

The Ocean Siren sculpture in the water next to the Strand Jetty in Townsville

If you don’t have time to enjoy the Strand walking path, you should still check out the jetty and sculpture next to it. The jetty is a good spot for fishing, but also to enjoy the ocean views. The Ocean Siren sculpture is part of the Museum of Underwater Art. The museum’s objective is to highlight reef conservation, restoration and education. The sculpture near the jetty changes colour aligned with the changes in sea temperatures at Davies Reef.

4. Jezzine Way Coastal Boardwalk and Kissing Point

There’s a boardwalk on the headland at the northern end of the Strand. It’s an easy walk along the coast to get stunning views of the ocean with Magnetic Island in the background. You’ll find signs along the boardwalk to learn more about the barracks and the history of Townsville.

At the top of the hill, at Kissing Point, you’ll find remains of a bunker and gun emplacements installed in the late 1800s. It’s also a good spot to enjoy views of the ocean and Townsville City.

You should allow about one hour to explore the boardwalk and the top of the hill.

5. Explore Castle Hill lookouts

day trips out of townsville

Castle Hill lookout is a must-do when visiting Townsville. It’s quite unique to have such a natural landmark in a town. From the lookouts at the top, you get 360° views really help better understand the geography around Townsville with the flat zones, the river and the ranges nearby.

They say you can walk to the top of Castle Hill (about 6km return). I had planned to do it but got stopped by the rain. After seeing many people (and dogs) sharing the winding road with vehicles when we drove up there for sunset, I kind of found it unpleasant and slightly unsafe. So I ended up only doing the short walk to lookouts at the top. If you don’t have a car and don’t want to walk, you can book a cab to take you there (I could book one online using 13cabs , but their app didn’t work).

It took us about 30 minutes to walk the 1.2 km at a very slow pace to enjoy the views from all the lookouts at the top of Castle Hill. The paths were all well maintained and safe. One lookout is easily accessible from the car park, but you’ll have to walk up and down stairs to get the 360° views.

If it’s raining in Townsville or if you want to enjoy the refreshing air-con, you may be interested in visiting museums. The two most popular museums in Townsville are the Maritime Museum of Townsville (with info about the HMAS Townsville and the SS Yongala ) and the Museum of Tropical Queensland .

If you want to see fish, it’s always better to go snorkelling or diving when the Great Barrier Reef isn’t far. But Reef HQ may be a good alternative if trips to the Reef are cancelled. It’s known to be the world’s largest living coral reef aquarium. They have been closed for a few years for refurbishment and will reopen in 2023.

If you want to just chill during your day in Townsville, how about enjoying a tour of Cleveland Bay on a sailing boat? Check out these morning or lunch sailing tours * and sunset sailing tours *.

Other things to do just outside Townsville

The list of things to do in the capital of North Queensland above should be enough to keep you busy if you only have one day in Townsville. If you’re staying for longer, I highly recommend considering a day trip from Townsville . But if you’re trying to find last-minute ideas of things to do in Townsville, here are a few other places near Townsville that made it to my list of plan Bs (full disclosure: I haven’t been to these places).

Ross River Parkway

There are a few walks along the Ross River just outside Townsville city. As I haven’t been there, I cannot comment on their quality but the council has published a map ( first page here and the second page here ) to help you plan your visit.

Botanic Gardens

I rarely take the time to visit botanic gardens when I’m in a new city. I usually prefer to hike in natural areas rather than a stroll in man-made gardens. However, I was agreeably surprised by my visit to Bundaberg Botanic Gardens which made me reconsider my choice of rarely visiting botanic gardens. I didn’t have time to check out the botanic gardens in Townsville. But maybe they would have been a good surprise too.

Anderson Gardens is the largest in the city. Here’s a map to help you plan your visit. If you love palms (I do!), you may prefer the Palmetum featuring 60 species native to Australia ( map here ).

Ross River Dam

The best place to see wildlife near Townsville is on Magnetic Island . We spotted koalas and rock wallabies during both of our visits. But if you don’t want to take a ferry while you’re in Townsville but still want to see wildlife, the Ross River dam could be an alternative. It takes just over 30 minutes to drive there from The Strand.

You can walk over to the Ross River Dam and look for turtles in the dam. Rock wallabies live nearby too, and baby crocodiles have been spotted in the Ross River.

Mount Stuart lookout

A 30-minute drive from Townsville city will take you to Mount Stuart Lookout. The panoramic views from up there are reputed to be as good as Castle Hill, but with fewer people.

Where to stay in townsville.

For those on a budget, I recommend the  Civic Guesthouse* . It’s very simple, but it has all you need for a good night at a reasonable price.

The Esplanade (North Ward) is the best place to stay in Townsville. It’s near the main activities, the restaurants and the bars. It’s lively when you go out but quiet enough to have a good night’s sleep. You may want to treat yourself to a room with a view at  Aquarius on the Beach *.

Looking to get out of Memphis for a day? Here are some fun and quirky trips to take

Memphis is central to numerous fun and interesting towns. Many of which are less than two hours away. If you want to learn more about Civil Way history, explore the Delta, and listen to some Blues here are a few day trips to try out.

Wilson, Arkansas

Wilson , a quaint, nostalgic Southern town and cultural hub is tucked away in the thick of the Arkansas Delta. About a 45-minute drive from Memphis via Interstate 55, Wilson is a fusion of sophistication and Southern charm. The storefronts in the historic town square are designed with Tudor-style architecture, reminiscent of a quiet English village.

Wilson Cafe embodies the farm-to-table charm the town is known for. The menu pays homage to Wilson's agricultural heritage and includes a wine selection from the Napa Valley. The Grange at Wilson Gardens is another local place to eat. According to its website, the Grange strives to uphold a "farm fresh flavor profile" in its extensive menu.

White's Mercantile is designed to be a one-stop nostalgic retail experience built inside an old Wilson gas station. Holly Williams, daughter of country singer Hank Williams Jr., opened the Wilson location in 2017. The pet-friendly "general store for the modern-day tastemaker" serves guests and Wilson natives alike, whether they need placemats, clothing, or children's books.

The Hampson Archeological Museum State Park is known nationwide for its collection of artifacts, interactive exhibits, and vintage photographs from the Nodena site. This Nodena site is "a 15-acre palisaded village that once thrived on the Mississippi River in what is today Mississippi County," according to the Museum's website. Admission is free and private and group tours are available.

Cleveland, Mississippi

Cleveland is possibly more of an eclectic small town than Wilson and is also on the Highway 61 route. This day trip is a little bit farther from Memphis than most on this list, about a two-hour drive via U.S. 61. Cleveland hosts Southern-style restaurants with a small-town feel and a collection of niche museums.

Have a casual, classic Delta lunch at Airport Grocery , or for a slightly more elevated experience, check out the Delta Meat Market in the Cotton House Hotel. Award-winning owner and Executive Chef Cole Ellis opened the restaurant, bar, and boutique grocer of fine southern foods. His newest culinary concept, Bar Fontaine , is on the rooftop of the Cotton House Hotel.

Beyond its award-winning restaurants, Cleveland is home to several unusual attractions. The GRAMMY Museum of Mississippi opened in 2016 and aims to promote Mississippi's rich history of music. Other attractions to check out on your visit are the Railroad Heritage Museum , Mississippi Delta Chinese Heritage Museum , Matthews-Sanders Sculpture Garden , and the Planetarium at Delta State .

Corinth, Mississippi

The town of Corinth has several nicknames: Cross City, the Crossroads of the South, the Gateway City, and Little Chicago. A link between the North and the South during the Civil War, Corinth is steeped in history. It is less than a 2-hour drive from Memphis on Highway 72.

The legendary Slugburger Cafe is a staple in northeast Mississippi. The term "slug burger" was coined during the Great Depression when Mississippians added extenders to the patties. The "slug" is fried in oil and traditionally served with pickles, onions, and mustard on a white bun. SlugBurger Cafe and Borrums Drug Store and Soda Fountain are two Corinth establishments where you can try the "slug burger."

Abe's Grill is Slugburger Cafe's hole-in-the-wall counterpart, decorated endearingly with Coca-Cola signage and worn license plates. Abe's serves homemade biscuits, cheeseburgers, and fries, among many other classic American dishes.

To dive into Corinth's Civil War history, visit The Crossroads Museum and the Historic Corinth Depot, the numerous Civil War sites, the Corinth Contraband Museum , and the Shilo National Military Park .

Helena, Arkansas

Mark Twain described Helena as “one of the prettiest situations on the Mississippi” in his book "Life on the Mississippi." Helena is about a 90-minute drive via  U.S. 61. Similar to Cleveland, the town is filled with the history of the Civil War. Moreover, there are many historic homes and churches to visit or wildlife to wander through.

Spend part of your day strolling down the picturesque Cherry Street popping in and out of restaurants and shops. Bella , a women's clothing boutique, is a must-see as well as other local boutiques, Handworks and Something Special. Then check out the Delta Dirt Distillery a family-owned craft distillery and farm, dating back to the late 1800s.

More: 5 offbeat things to do in Memphis, from a miniature Mississippi to Christmas all year

Closer to home: Antique and thrift stores are full of hidden gems. Why these 5 in DeSoto are worth visiting

Helena has several historic structures to explore such as Beth El Heritage Hall , Edwardian Inn , Pillow Thompson House , and St. John’s Episcopal Church . To do something a little more athletic, take advantage of Helena's canoe tours on the Mississippi River. On this guided tour, you will paddle one mile upstream in a handmade Quapaw canoe until you reach Buck Island. To continue your outdoor adventures, check out the Helena adventure trails that connect to the local network of parks and forests.

Oxford, Mississippi

Oxford is only about an hour and a half away from Memphis via I-55 and U.S. 278. It is home to the University of Mississippi, affectionately dubbed "Ole Miss," the home of William Faulkner, and all four branches of Square Books . The bustling college town is a great option if you are looking to take a day trip out of Memphis.

Rowanoak , the house of Faulkner, the famous southern author, is always a popular destination for visitors. Open Tuesday through Sunday, Rowanoak and the surrounding grounds are a great stop to make on your trip. Visit the Historic Town Square and eat at a few Oxford classics like Ajax Diner and City Grocery .

A lesser-known attraction just outside of the town is Wall Doxy State Park. Not only is visiting the park a chance to participate in outdoor activities, but visitors can also take part in Synchronis Firefly Hikes depending on the time of year.

Honorable Mentions

Walk the trails as they wind through forest with huge rocks, peaceful waterfalls and lush greenery. Visit a depot and a mill.

Roscoe Village

Phone : 740-622-7644, Visitors Center

Website : roscoevillage.com

Roscoe Village, an 1830s canal town, that has living history tours, horse-drawn canal boat rides, museums, gardens and much more. It is located along the Ohio & Erie Canal. In 1913, a flood wiped out the canal, and the city suffered years of decline.

About 50 years ago townspeople joined to restore the area. There are now restored buildings, annual festivals and events, most notably Canal Days, the Hay Activity Center, The Gardens of Roscoe, Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum and a downtown thriving with shops, restaurants and historic buildings.

Roscoe’s main street is named Whitewoman Street to honor Mary Harris, who is considered to be the first white woman resident in the Ohio Country.

Phone: 419-562-6891

Website: www.bucyruscopperkettle.com

Bucyrus Copper Kettle Works has been making handmade copper items for over 140 years. The trade began at its location as an outgrowth of a hardware store that was meeting a demand for apple butter kettles that had to be purchased in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The hardware store's owners decided its tinsmiths could be retrained as coppersmiths and the store could manufacture their own kettles, according to the shop's website.

Tours by appointment to watch the coppersmiths at work are available. Tour hours are 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Monday-Friday. The cost is $10 and includes a commemorative coin.

Kyle Larson makes another trip to Indianapolis as Brickyard 400 returns to speedway's oval

By michael marot, associated press | updated - july 18, 2024 at 2:34 p.m. | posted - july 18, 2024 at 1:37 p.m..

Estimated read time: 4-5 minutes

INDIANAPOLIS — Kyle Larson spent May trying to become the second driver to complete 1,100 miles of racing in a single day.

Rain in Indianapolis and Charlotte washed away his big dream.

Now the 2021 NASCAR champion is back in town for the first time since finishing his inaugural Indianapolis 500 with a new vision, a new challenge and a new appreciation for the track's historic 2.5-mile oval.

"To this point, I haven't really had any thoughts about the 500 and what that's going to mean this week or if I'll have a different perspective when I get there," Larson said in the lead up to Sunday's Brickyard 400. "Everybody there has just taken it from being already the greatest facility to stretching away from the competition."

Larson's mission this week is about more than logistics and aesthetics.

He has only one win since finishing the 500 , June 9 at Sonoma, California, and Larson has only one top-five finish in his last five races — a fourth at New Hampshire.

Things got even worse over the past two weeks for the California native. The world's most versatile driver finished 39th in Chicago and 13th at Pocono, leaving him second in the Cup standings — three points behind Hendrick Motorsports teammate Chase Elliott, the 2020 NASCAR champ.

It's not just close at the top, either.

Tyler Reddick and Denny Hamlin trail Elliott by just 15 and 20 points and William Byron, another Hendrick driver, enters this weekend in fifth.

While some believe Larson's experience from earlier this year in Indy could give him a leg up on the competition when the Brickyard moves back to the traditional oval NASCAR ran 200-mile races after three years on the track's road course, Larson downplays the notion.

The lone practice session is scheduled for Friday afternoon with qualifying set for Saturday, a far cry from the weeklong six-hour practice sessions and two days of qualifying Larson had leading up to the 500.

"Even though, the IndyCar and Cup car feel similar, it's different in the fact that in IndyCar you're running wide open," he said. "We're going to be lifting in every corner in the stock car and still, I think, we'll feel the weight a lot there (in the corners). I think the line will be similar, but it will be similar to what it was with the previous generation car. So, no, I don't think the laps I have in the IndyCar really mean anything this weekend."

Indianapolis has not been kind to Larson through the years.

In nine career Brickyard starts, he has just two top-fives with a career best third coming in 2021, the first road course race. On the oval, his top finish was fifth in 2016.

Changing series didn't help much, either. An impressive qualifying weekend allowed Larson to start fifth in May, but he was relegated to an 18th-place finish in part because of a late pit lane speeding violation. The four-hour rain delay in Indianapolis made him a late arrival in Charlotte where he failed to record a lap in the rain-shortened Coca-Cola 600.

He called it one of the most disappointing days he'd ever experienced.

While Larson's busy schedule has allowed him to cast aside most of those bad memories, one concern lingers.

"I'm still anxious about the weather because we're supposed to leave for Italy on Monday, so we don't need any rain," Larson said.

Fortunately for Larson, the weekend forecast looks picture perfect. High temperatures are expected to be in the low to mid-80s with rain chances under 10% all three days.

Weather won't be the only major difference as Larson drives through the speedway tunnel.

Though many Cup drivers believe the move back to the oval track will restore the race's prestige and the elimination of the NASCAR-IndyCar doubleheader again gives Cup teams the exclusive stage, Larson knows the atmosphere won't be the same even in front of one of the series' biggest crowds.

"I've always understood how massive the Indianapolis 500 is," he said. "But it was really amazing to see how big it is from start to finish with 350,000-plus people there. Every practice was a big deal and Carb Day and then, too, I just appreciate the facility every time I go there. I appreciate it more and more because it's the most beautiful facility we go to on the schedule."

Looking for a break from the Delaware beaches? These trips can all be done in a day

Portrait of Isabel Hughes

The Delaware beaches are always a good time.

But maybe you got a little too much sun and a day in the sand doesn’t sound appealing. Or maybe you’re one of those people who can only sit still for so long, and a few days of lounging around has you antsy.

No matter the reason for your departure, these day trips – all within driving distance of the Delaware beaches – will give you a temporary break from the salt and sand.

Maryland’s Eastern Shore

Consisting of all counties east of the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland’s Eastern Shore is full of small, cobblestone-filled towns that are perfect for a day visit.

First on the list is Cambridge , which dates back to 1684, making it one of the oldest colonial cities in Maryland . Originally a seaport community, it celebrates its rich maritime history with the Richardson Maritime Museum and Ruark Boatworks, part of the museum.

Visitors can watch as volunteers restore and build traditional wooden boats or hop across the creek for a ride on Skipjack Nathan of Dorchester, an oyster dredge boat.

For history nerds, there’s a museum honoring Underground Railroad conductor Harriet Tubman, who was born near Cambridge.

5 Maryland Day Trips: Quick summer getaways close to Delaware

About an hour north of Cambridge is the charming Rock Hall , a waterfront town located directly on the Chesapeake Bay. Known as the Pearl of the Chesapeake, you’ll find some of the freshest seafood around along its numerous waterfront restaurants, such as the funky Harbor Shack.

Other popular towns include St. Michaels , Easton and Oxford .

Elsewhere along the Chesapeake Bay

Located at the mouth of the Susquehanna River and the head of Chesapeake Bay, Havre De Grace is a must-see.

Another waterfront village, you'll be sure to find some top-notch seafood. Not a seafood lover? The village has many other options, too!

This wouldn’t be a proper list without mentioning Annapolis , Maryland’s capital city.

Known as the sailing capital of the U.S., visitors can explore the area by foot or by boat.

Annapolis is home to the U.S. Naval Academy, and visitors can take a stroll around the beautiful grounds. Or, take a tour of the Maryland State House.

Main Street is also bustling, with numerous eateries, shops and galleries.

Chincoteague, Virginia

This island — and town by the same name — is located on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

Its national wildlife refuge is known for wild ponies, which reside on Assateague Island. Two herds call the island home, one of which is located in Maryland and the other in Virginia. The Maryland herd is managed by the National Park Service, while the Virginia herd is owned by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company.

Each year, there’s an annual pony swim where “Saltwater Cowboys" on horseback round up the ponies and swim them from Assateague Island to Chincoteague Island.

This year’s 99th annual swim will be on Wednesday, July 24, though festivities kick off in late June with the Chincoteague Fireman's Carnival. The town’s annual pony auction will be held July 25.

For a complete guide to the events, visit chincoteaguechamber.com/pony-event-schedule .

Aside from the ponies, the town boasts numerous waterfront eateries, farmers markets, a blueberry festival , a water park, minigolf and many other outdoor activities.

Cape May, New Jersey

If you’re already at the Delaware beaches but you’ve never been to Cape May, New Jersey, this is the perfect time to check it out.

A ferry will take visitors between the town and Lewes. The ride is about 85 minutes. Reservations are required year-round and can be made at cmlf.com .

Cape May-Lewes Ferry guide: What to know about pricing, schedules, amenities and terminals

The town is known for its beaches, but has plenty more to do.

Its downtown area is bustling with shops and restaurants, as well as eye-catching Victorian homes .

A little further out is Willow Creek Winery and Farm , which offers tours, tastings and fire pit Fridays and Saturdays, often accompanied by live music.

And don’t forget to check out the Cape May Lighthouse , located in Cape May Point, where visitors can climb the 199-step cast iron spiral staircase to a remarkable view of the Delaware Bay.
