Lightsaber training Inosanto’s love for Star Wars and its place on her journey as a martial artist dates back to the first film’s release. “Star Wars was one of those things that I got to bond with my dad [Dan Inosanto] about,” she says. As a child, Inosanto would travel with her father as he conducted international martial arts seminars. During a stop in Aspen, Colorado, the two saw A New Hope for the first time in theaters. “And it was incredible…that kind of energy was like a rock concert.” Her father was particularly enamored with the lightsaber combat. Months later, he returned home one day with two extendable plastic lightsabers. “He goes, ‘Come on, honey! Let’s work out.’ And so that’s how he was training me in martial arts.” When Inosanto grew up and became a mother herself, she introduced her children to the galaxy. “My oldest son has autism and for whatever reason he really gravitated toward the whole Star Wars universe,” she says. “I loved sitting down and watching The Clone Wars and later on Rebels. They’re almost like modern-day Aesop’s Fables. There’s always some cool life lesson. And I think it’s even more amazing that, down the road when I would be asked to audition for Mandalorian, in the beginning, it was my son that I would read lines [with to prepare].”

Becoming Ezra Fans and co-stars alike frequently comment on how much Esfandi is like his character in the series. To embody Ezra Bridger, the actor studied up as if Bridger and his family were real historical figures. “I did not watch Rebels ad nauseam because I didn’t want to get too much of the younger version of the character locked into my body,” he says. “But I watched key episodes that Dave recommended so I could understand the relationship between Ahsoka and Sabine and the rest of his crew. And I also researched Ezra like a public figure. I read all these articles… and then watched a ton of videos on YouTube about the Force, and interviews with George [Lucas] and interviews with Dave. I inundated myself with all things Star Wars to understand the tone and the idea of the show.”

Ahsoka  star Diana Lee Inosanto literally trained her whole life to enter the  Star Wars  galaxy

The actress studied martial arts by practicing with plastic lightsabers as a kid. Now, she plays the menacing Magistrate Morgan Elsbeth on Ahsoka.

Devan Coggan (rhymes with seven slogan) is a senior writer at Entertainment Weekly. Most of her personality is just John Mulaney quotes and Lord of the Rings references.

diana lee inosanto star trek

Diana Lee Inosanto jokes that she's sort of been training for her Star Wars role all her life. The daughter of martial arts legend Dan Inosanto and goddaughter of Bruce Lee , the actress now stars as Magistrate Morgan Elsbeth, one of the menacing villains of Ahsoka . Inosanto first appeared in a single episode of The Mandalorian , facing off against Rosario Dawson's former Jedi, and now, she steps into the spotlight on Ahsoka — where she'll soon get to show off even more of her skills.

In an interview conducted prior to the start of the SAG-AFTRA strike, Inosanto told EW that she and her father bonded over their love of the original Star Wars trilogy. As a young girl her dad took her and a group of his martial arts students to see the original film in theaters. When they returned home, he immediately ran out to buy some plastic lightsabers to use for training.

"I love the irony that he was training me with these double-staff, plastic lightsabers, and who knew that down the road, I would actually be doing this fight scene with Rosario?" Inosanto, 57, says with a laugh. "Maybe the Force is really out there."

Inosanto explains she was first hired for The Mandalorian for her extensive martial arts background, which was on full display in the fight between Morgan and Ahsoka. Still, she knew little about Morgan's history — and for a while, she didn't even know her character's name. Ahsoka takes a deeper dive into who Morgan is, revealing that she has ties to the Nightsisters of Dathomir, a group of powerful witches. The character is currently working with mercenaries Baylan Skoll (the late Ray Stevenson ) and his apprentice Shin Hati ( Ivanna Sakhno ), searching for the whereabouts of the nefarious Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen).

Inosanto teases that Morgan is driven by her "unwavering allegiance to Thrawn," adding that "she's definitely somebody who's very faithful to his causes and ideals." She also found inspiration for Morgan's imposing stature in powerful leaders throughout history, including Julius Caesar and Catherine the Great.

And, she adds, Ahsoka required her to train even harder than The Mandalorian. "There's a long, involved fight scene," she teases with a smile. "It's pretty intense."

The Magistrate: Interview with Diana Lee Inosanto

Diana Lee Inosanto shared her journey to become Morgan Elsbeth, aka the Magistrate in The Mandalorian—from watching the original 1977 Star Wars with her father to dueling with Ahsoka Tano.

Fabio Fiori

Fabio Fiori

The Mandalorian Chapter 13: The Jedi was arguably one of the most pivotal episodes of the series and of Star Wars television as a whole—bringing fan favorite animated character Ahsoka Tano to live-action, revealing the Child’s name, Grogu, and introducing an incredibly fascinating new villain into the galaxy far, far away: The Magistrate, aka Morgan Elsbeth, played by Diana Lee Inosanto.

Daughter of Jeet Kune Do and Filipino martial arts legend Dan Inosanto and goddaughter of beloved global icon Bruce Lee, Diana Lee Inosanto grew up with Star Wars . Seeing the original 1977 movie in Aspen, Colorado after her family attended an international martial arts camp captured her imagination and allowed her to make a special connection with her father—the duel between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader inspired him to train her in martial arts using sticks and toy lightsabers. “I think of it as the precursor to me doing the fight scene with Rosario [Dawson] in The Mandalorian ,” Diana Lee Inosanto shared in an interview with Tatooine Times.

Since experiencing Star Wars for the first time, Diana Lee Inosanto has had a lustrous career as a stunt performer ( Buffy the Vampire Slayer , Walker, Texas Ranger , Face/Off ), later becoming a “Sensei to the Stars,” preparing the who’s who in Hollywood for their action roles, and finally writing, directing, and starring in her first indie film The Sensei . Diana Lee Inosanto shared, “When I look back, it’s interesting because people didn’t always know I was an actress, and then to survive in this business as a mom with a son who has autism was really hard. Back in the 90s they weren’t really interested in casting my type … I’m half European and half Asian Pacific Islander descent. So stunt work really was something that catered to my family’s needs. I used my time on the set with every show and movie I worked on as my training ground. I was trying to be the sponge that absorbed everything and that remarkably prepared me to direct The Sensei and then here I am now, enjoying the whole accolades with the Star Wars universe. It’s been amazing, you know.”

The actress recalled the moment she got the life-changing call from Lucasfilm about the mysterious role in an equally mysterious TV series: “I’m in my fifties, so when I got the call I actually thought it was a joke. I couldn’t get a talent agent at all because of my age; it was really a struggle. I thought my career really was done, so I didn’t realize this was the real thing until I was sent an NDA. I had three days to prepare and the script was so disguised you would never know in a million years that it was Star Wars . I went in and auditioned, then I had to meditate just to keep myself calm because I realized this was the real deal. You can imagine how stunned I was when I got a call three or four days later that I got the job, but I still didn’t know what the job was, what the character was.” Diana Lee Inosanto continued, “I had no idea until about a month later, and then they asked me to come in and to train with the stunt team, but little did I know it was really to meet Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni. I then found out that Dave came across a trailer of The Sensei . They were committed to finding a real martial artist who could hopefully act, and thank goodness because of my aunt I had the acting chops, and then of course the martial arts part of it comes from dad and my godfather. I’m very lucky that the stars and the planets aligned for me, and here we are.”

Diana Lee Inosanto brought such elegance and imposing presence to the character of the Magistrate. The actress revealed the inspiration behind her portrayal of the villain, studying world leaders while trying to embody Lady Eboshi of the Studio Ghibli masterpiece Princess Mononoke , which was part Dave Filoni’s influence for Chapter 13 . “I kept examining her character, especially her ambition. She has her own agenda that she thinks makes sense to her. It’s the same thing with the Magistrate in many ways. That is what really helped me have some internal understanding of this character and where she might be,” Diana Lee Inosanto said.

The actress admitted that she had no idea at the time that the Magistrate was named Morgan Elsbeth: ”It stunned me on the night that it aired; everybody was making such a big deal about Grogu, but I’m over here ecstatic about learning my name [laughs]. I had no idea … kind of smart that Dave kept that a secret.”

The culmination of Chapter 13: The Jedi was undoubtedly the duel between Ahsoka Tano and Morgan Elsbeth—quickly becoming one of the most iconic moments in Star Wars history. Diana Lee Inosanto reflected upon the importance of the scene for the franchise: “I loved being a partner with Rosario because this was so important for the fans. I think it was in our hands to really make this fight scene something that the fans can really sink their teeth into.” She then delved into the developmental challenges of a scene of this caliber: “When I heard Lauren [Kim] was gonna be my double it made sense that she would be by my side and a part of this journey because she’s a really talented student under my father … It was like having my little sister next to me. When you’re doing a fight scene, it’s like being a boxer; you have to have the endurance and the choreography for a long time. I was on that set for 17 hours when that fight scene happened. I’m so happy that Lauren was there for me, you know what I mean? Same thing with Caitlin [Dechelle] for Rosario … this is really a team effort when you are putting out a fight scene of that kind of magnitude. [Stunt Coordinator Ryan Watson] was amazing. He was always open to new ideas. They really groomed the fight scene to my sensibilities.”

Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) vs the Magistrate (Diana Lee Inosanto) in The Mandalorian Chapter 13: The Jedi - Lucasfilm Ltd.

Diana Lee Inosanto was welcomed by the Star Wars fans with open arms—she was inducted into the 501st Golden Gate Garrison in Northern California and met other Garrisons at C2E2 in 2021. “Fans are the best because I can relate to their organic and endless enthusiasm for this universe. In a way I feel like I’m the fan that got really, really lucky and blessed to be a part of this franchise, and I still pinch myself every day. At C2E2 I met Timothy [Zahn], Giancarlo [Esposito], and Hayden [Christensen], but most importantly the fans. I was meeting so many families that were in the same walk as me, where they had special needs children. Some of the fans were people with autism … I feel this personal connection, you know, just knowing each other’s struggles. What can I say? I love the fans,” she said.

At the end of the episode, the Magistrate’s fate is unclear. Diana Lee Inosanto shared her hopes for the character moving forward: “I would love to see her definitely in books and comics for sure, more extensively part of the Star Wars universe. It would be great to see if there’s an unveiling of what her background is: Where did she come from? Who is she? What makes her feel vulnerable? What makes her mad even more? I think this is a woman that definitely holds a lot of secrets and doesn’t reveal everything that’s on her agenda. But we will see what will happen. My fingers are crossed.”

Diana Lee Inosanto’s love and appreciation for Morgan Elsbeth and Star Wars is inspirational, and we can’t wait to find out if she will return as the mysterious villain in future projects. In the meantime, make sure to follow her on Instagram .

Inside Ahsoka: Eman Esfandi and Diana Lee Inosanto on Finding Ezra Bridger and Morgan Elsbeth

Inside ahsoka : eman esfandi and diana lee inosanto on finding ezra bridger and morgan elsbeth.

Kristin Baver

The Disney+ series stars talk about their emotional link to the Jedi and the Nightsister and the magic of being cast in their dream roles.

Beyond their fictional connections to Grand Admiral Thrawn , Eman Esfandi and Diana Lee Inosanto share immense gratitude for landing in the universe of Ahsoka . Esfandi, who plays Ezra Bridger in the Disney+ series, and Inosanto, reprising the role of Morgan Elsbeth she first played in The Mandalorian , were both trying to find their footing in film when they were cast.

“Who would've ever thought? Our world is so strange and so mysterious,” Inosanto tells StarWars.com. Ten years after writing, producing, and starring in her own independent film, The Sensei, Ahsoka creator Dave Filoni and executive producer Jon Favreau found Inosanto’s indie film trailer online just as Inosanto was about to give up hope. “I've always loved acting, but I could never find my break and my voice as an artist. I was honestly thinking, ‘I guess I'll go back to college. I'll continue teaching martial arts,’” she says. “But here I am. And it's just been magical for me to be able to have this newfound career and to be able to be an actress in something I love so much. I've loved [ Star Wars ] since I was a child, and it's just a real miracle for me.”

We are so proud to announce our next guest for Comic Con Brussels.

All Star Wars fans have probably guessed it by her spear from Beskar, and she also had a notable role in the last series of Ahsoka as Morgan Elsbeth.

This role did not just fall into her lap, but it is very much the real-life culmination of 30 years of dedication and hard work.

As the goddaughter of Bruce Lee and daughter of Dan Inosanto, the Filipino American martial arts icon and Bruce Lee’s protege and training partner, martial arts was inspired and taught at the highest level.

As an American actress, director, writer, martial artist, stunt woman, and children’s book author, Diana paved a way in the Hollywood ecosystem that is unique, modern, and inclusive.

A very strong actress who does her own stunts in a galaxy far far away, we are talking about the one and only Diana Lee Inosanto.

Diana will be present at Comic Con Brussels on both days to meet all Ashoka and The Mandalorian fans.

Profile: Diana Lee Inosanto

Date of birth: May 29, 1966 (Torrance, California, US)

Other names: Diana Lee; D. Lee Inosanto

Occupation: Actor, stunt performer, fight choreographer, martial arts instructor, producer.

Style: Jeet Kune Do, Kali, Eskrima, Silat, boxing, kickboxing, Wing Chun.

Biography: Diana Lee Inosanto was born in Torrance, California, and raised in Carson. Diana’s mother is Sue Ann Reveal and her father is the Filipino-American martial arts expert Dan Inosanto, who was a close friend of Bruce Lee . The two were such close friends that Dan Inosanto named his daughter, Diana Lee, after him. Bruce Lee was also Diana’s first godfather. Dan Inosanto trained and studied the martial arts with Bruce Lee and was one of only a few qualified Jeet Kune Do instructors.

When Bruce Lee died in 1973, the Inosanto family moved to Harbor City, California, where she attended Narbonne High School. Her father opened his first martial arts school, the Filipino Kali Academy, in Harbor City with Diana’s second godfather, Richard Bustillo. This is when Diana started to learn a number of different martial arts styles, including Jeet Kune Do, Kali, Eskrima, Silat, boxing, kickboxing and Wing Chun. In 2009, Diana was named Woman of the Year by Black Belt magazine.

Inspired by her aunt – the actress Lilia Inosanto – Diana started to study acting with the Broadway coach and author, Michael Shurtleff. Her first acting performance was in the TV series, Moonlighting , in 1987. In the 1990s, Diana moved into the film industry as an actor and stunt performer. Her film credits as a stunt performer include Barb Wire (1996), Face/Off (1997), Blade (1998), and Wild Wild West (1999). She has also worked on TV shows including Walker, Texas Ranger , Buffy the Vampire Slayer , ER , and Star Trek: Enterprise . Diana has also worked as a fight choreographer on films including Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) and Sinners and Saints (2010). She was Melissa McCarthy’s martial arts trainer for the film, Spy (2015), and trained Aaron Eckhart for the film I, Frankenstein (2014).

In 2008, Diana Lee Inosanto made her directorial debut on the independent film, The Sensei . She also wrote, produced and starred in the film, the first from her own production company, Zen Mountain LLC. The film won awards at international film festivals including LA Femme International Film Fest, Hoboken International Film Festival, Philadelphia Asian American Film Fest, San Francisco’s Frameline, Germany’s Verzaubert Film Festival and New York’s Newfest. Because of the film’s strong humanitarian message, Diana was awarded the 2011 American Courage Award in Washington, D.C. by the Asian American Justice Centre.

Diana continues to be active in the California theatre scene as a member of the Asian American theatre group, Lodestone Theater Ensemble. In 2008, she worked as a fight choreographer with East West Players on the world premiere of the Dan Kwong play, Be Like Water .

In 1995, Diana married the martial artist, producer, stunt performer and former Deputy Sheriff, Ron Balicki, who had trained with her father. She has two children.

Speech! On teaching the martial arts: “The way my father will talk about it is it is important to evolve… and also try and understand what is best for you as an individual… It was about removing any restrictions and getting out of these hardline styles and forms.” In conversation with Kung Fu Movie Guide , 2018.

Star wars: tales of the empire theory retcons one clone wars story as the birth of the inquisitors.

One theory concerning Tales of the Empire links a crucial turning point of the Clone Wars to the birth of Star Wars’ Imperial Inquisitors.

  • Barriss Offee and the Grand Inquisitor are linked through a theory that suggests a connection to the Jedi Temple bombing in the Clone Wars era.
  • The Grand Inquisitor's dark path may have been initiated during the bombing, shedding light on his fall from grace.
  • Tales of the Empire will explore these connections and the origins of the Inquisitors, premiering on Disney+ in 2024.

A theory linking Tales of the Empire to Star Wars: The Clone Wars could explain the birth of the Imperial Inquisitors. Since their creation in Rebels season 1, Star Wars' Inquisitors have become integral parts of several stories in a galaxy far, far away. The Inquisitors have become so vital to the Dark Times of the galaxy that they are even set to have an impact on upcoming Star Wars TV shows .

One such show is the Tales of the Empire story , the pseudo-sequel to Tales of the Jedi . These tales will focus on two key Imperials in different areas of the Star Wars timeline. Morgan Elsbeth, known for her appearances in The Mandalorian and Ahsoka , is one of these characters, while the other brings a seemingly long-forgotten Jedi Padawan back, linking to the timeline of Star Wars: The Clone Wars . This character is none other than Barriss Offee, with one theory about her story in Tales of the Empire potentially linking the Clone Wars to the birth of the Inquisitor program.

Barriss Offee’s Jedi Temple Bombing Could Be Linked To The Grand Inquisitor

The grand inquisitor has ties to the jedi order of the republic..

The crux of this theory about Tales of the Empire is the Grand Inquisitor , a character confirmed to appear in the TV show. The Grand Inquisitor was also introduced in Star Wars Rebels and appeared in Obi-Wan Kenobi as the leader of the Inquisitorius program. With Tales of the Empire being set before both shows and his death in Rebels , the Grand Inquisitor will appear as the person responsible for inducting Barriss Offee into his order of dark side users.

Star Wars: The Grand Inquisitor's Fall To The Dark Side & Order 66 Connection Explained

Interestingly though, Barriss and the Grand Inquisitor may unknowingly be acquainted with one another as hinted at by one reveal in Star Wars Rebels . In Rebels, it was confirmed that the Grand Inquisitor was once a Jedi Temple Guard. These yellow lightsaber-wielding guards stood watch over the Jedi Temple on Coruscant during the time of the Republic - including when Barriss Offee bombed the building in The Clone Wars . Other than the brief reveal in Rebels , little about the Grand Inquisitor's Jedi past has been revealed, with Tales of the Empire being the prime opportunity to do so.

This Can Be Retconned As The Moment The Grand Inquisitor Was "Born"

The grand inquisitor's fall to darkness could be tied to barriss' star wars story..

If it is indeed mentioned that the Grand Inquisitor was still a Jedi Temple Guard when Barriss bombed the Temple, Tales of the Empire could tie his fall from the light to the same moment as Barriss' . Barriss' rage primarily drove the Jedi Temple bombing as she believed the Jedi had lost sight of what they were supposed to be. This caused further discourse, such as Ahsoka Tano being framed and subsequently becoming disillusioned with the Jedi herself. With two people already losing faith in the Jedi Order, it could be written that the same happened to the Grand Inquisitor.

All six of Tales of the Empire's animated shorts will begin streaming on May 4, 2024, on Disney+.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars could be retconned by revealing that one of the guards in the blast was the Grand Inquisitor, with the potential death of his peers putting him on a dark path. Similarly, the Grand Inquisitor could be revealed as one of the guards who arrested Barriss and witnessed her trial alongside Anakin Skywalker, witnessing the disillusionment of the Jedi Order firsthand. All of this could have driven the Grand Inquisitor to abandon the Jedi himself, putting him on the path to the Inquisitorius long before the events of Tales of the Empire .

Tales of the Empire (2024)

Star Wars: Tales of the Empire is an animated follow-up to 2022's Tales of the Jedi. The series focuses on Barriss Offee, a former Jedi, and Morgan Elsbeth as they navigate their separate paths through the Galactic Empire. The series will also see the return of other iconic Star Wars characters such as General Grievous, Ahsoka Tano, Grand Admiral Thrawn, and Darth Vader.
