Dinosaur Safari Description

Dinosaur Safari is a 1996 computer game released by Creative Multimedia Corporation and Mindscape. It was released for the Macintosh and PC. Designed by scientists from the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, Dinosaur Safari is an educational video game intended for children.

In Dinosaur Safari, the player travels in time and photographs images of dinosaurs and other ancient reptiles for the "National Chronographic Society." Some of the more aggressive dinosaur species will attack the player's vehicle, the Kronos Sphere. As more species are photographed, the player gains access to power-ups such as a video recorder and a call to attract dinosaurs. Captured images and video footage of the dinosaurs are stored on crystals in the National Chronographic headquarters.

Dinosaur Safari is designed to recreate the world that you would encounter if time travel were really possible. Instead of bringing the Dinosaurs to the modern world, Dinosaur Safari takes you to the world of the DInosaurs. Developed in collaboration with designers and scientists from the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, this multimedia adventure provides hours of enjoyment travelling through time, hunting dinosaurs, and collecting their photos. Dinosaurs are seen in realistic environments which reflect current knowledge of Mesozoic plant and animal life, geography, and ecology. Filled with information about the appearance, behavior, and classification of Dinosaurs and other extinct reptiles, as well as the geography and geology of the Mesozoic Era in which they lived, people of all ages will learn something new each time they play!

Dinosaurs. There pretty much aint a kid around who wasn't at one point or another utterly fascinated with these giant reptiles.

Of course, where children find fun, companies quickly find money. That is the usual course of things, and "dinomania" is no exception. Hence we get dinosaur movies, comic books... and (how else?) computer games.

Some of you may assume basing on this games' name that we're going to hunt for cute reptiles (like the oh-so-friendly Tyranosaurus - look, he's just begging for a pat on the head!). Fortunately, that is not so - all we are "hunting" for are pictures and videos of whole sixty species of these overgrown lizards.

Initially you only have access to a basic camera to take your pictures with, but as the game progresses several more devices will appear - a video camera (which can record movies), a detector which will help you find your way to the critter you are looking for at the time, and finally a lure which is perfect for getting that shy Velociraptor (or another Deinonychus) out of hiding.

The game's difficulty level has been geared towards children, and for their ease of gameplay the CD also includes several savegames pre-engineered by the authors. These allow access to all the extra devices and large amounts of energy credits (used for movement, taking photos and the use of special devices) right away.

It is also worth noting that while there is no background music and the SFX aren't of too high quality, all the dinosaur entries have voiced descriptions - simply click and hold with your mouse over the box in the entry that you want to have read.

While the pre-rendered graphics and scarce sound won't impress anyone these days, Dinosaur Safari is still a source of great fun for kids - thus the ideal way to get that younger sibling, visiting brat or your own growing successor occupied for a couple hours when you attend to more important matters.

And who knows, maybe you yourself will enjoy a bit of dinosaur-stalking fun?

Description

Dinosaur Safari is an educational title produced in partnership with the Oregon Museum of Science that that teaches children about dinosaurs. It sends the player's character back in time to photograph dinosaurs and other types of prehistoric reptiles as a member of the National Chronographic Society.

By taking photographs and progressing power-ups can be unlocked, such as a call to attract dinosaurs, a radar device to find dinosaurs more easily and a video recorders. Certain animals are aggressive and will attack the Kronos Sphere, the player character's vehicle. The captured images and videos are stored on crystals in the National Chronographic headquarters. There is a large dinosaur index where all information is brought together.

The game is played from a first-person perspective and most of the actions are performed through menu structures, clicking actions in the interface. About two thirds of the game is used to display the environment, the rest is the HUD with buttons and a world map.

Adventure/puzzler with dinosaurs

Dinosaur Safari, as the name suggests, will allow you to visit dinosaurs in their natural habitat, or, rather, what the producers thought their habitat might have looked like. In terms of interaction with the game, Dinosaur Safari feels like an adventure, though at times you might not feel as if you are in a game, but rather in a multimedia presentation. Therefore, the game is a cool combination of edutainment, though rather shallow, with a few interesting puzzles brought forth to keep you from becoming too bored. The game, graphically, looks OK, with static backgrounds and animated dinos, but noting too fancy. For a 94 released game it looks not at its best, and the graphic engine is probably keeping this one at bay a bit too much. At any rate, if you liked classics such as Myst, you might enjoy the brand of interactivity this game/suite has to offer. Make sure however you are interested in dinosaurs and that you will not mind puzzles that seem a little out of context at times. Dinosaur Safari is definitely an ok game, but it is not for everyone, that is certain.

Wow, what a lousy update. Graphics are all messed up. As you pan around there are trees climbing into the sky at weird angles and there are walls that look like force fields that appear and disappear.

EXCELLENT SCRIPT, OPTICS, AND CONTROLS! A GREAT GAME!!!

DId I read from the other review that were no controls, or a guide...whoa? Of course there are :) One has to accumulate enough Sunga (money) to unlock all the features and dinosaurs, That is of course a matter of downing them. There are literally two scrolls of upgrades and cool add ons. The horse is expensive though @25 Sunga. By the way this is THEE BEST dinosaur game I have EVER seen with tons of diverse effects, akin to MIST. The software giveaway is quite unbelievable and keep in mind also that the script is very well suited for Mac***, meaning the computer doesn't run hot. That’s a BIG plus, and a great job well done, especially for such huge graphics, and mobile dexterity of the man. Rather than for me to go into all the great details of this fine game, which includes some very attractive scenes, cool music, and specials effects, one of which turns the landscape from day into night, along with nice optical lens effects, this is quite simply a great game. Do not hesitate to download it, you will be amazed at the precision, and detail, and finally it’s great fun, you will not be disappointed at all :)

Description

Dino Safari first opened its doors in 1994 to capitalise on the mainstream obsession with all things prehistoric, and is proudly still going strong today. This beloved local location is one of the area’s premier tourist attractions, transporting kids and adults alike into a bygone time around its proud central volcano. There are four main zones containing eight dinosaurs whose grounds need maintaining… if you’re brave enough! T-Rex Paddock The notorious Tyrannosaurus Rex is the favourite dinosaur of many, and you can follow its footprints into the T-Rex Paddock. Carefully trim around these prints to keep them visible and pristine for Dino Safari’s guests! Cretaceous Canyon The Cretaceous Canyon is called home not only to more unique archaic creatures but also the park’s Cretaceous Café, where all ages can enjoy a bite to eat. Unfortunately, some of the guests’ manners could also be described as archaic – so you’ll have to make sure to keep the area in tip-top shape with both cutting and litter contracts. Herbivore Valley Herds of gentle giants ‘roam’ through Herbivore Valley - and Dino Safari’s guests often enjoy a shaded seat under a Brachiosaurus, or a picnic with a Parasaurolophus. Dino Safari’s youngest patrons can also use Herbivore Valley’s play area, so it’s vital that this zone remains as clean and tidy as possible. Raptor Enclosure Follow the winding trail through thick bushes to the Raptor Enclosure; possibly the most dangerous of all Dino Safari zones. Make sure that even the most petrified of guests stop for a second to admire the pristine surroundings before continuing their escape from the resident Velociraptors.
