Disney’s Contemporary Resort: Full Room Tour and Walkthrough

Few resorts scream the unforgettable magic of Walt Disney World like Disney’s Contemporary Resort . One of Walt Disney World’s original resort hotels, Disney’s Contemporary Resort first opened in 1971; and since then has remained one of the most popular deluxe resort hotels on property — undergoing extensive renovations from 2006-2009 that also saw the addition of Bay Lake Tower.

The main lobby, located on the first floor, has a contemporary design to it, just like the name of the resort. It also has The Wave, a restaurant offering fantastic dining options; breakfast, lunch, dinner, and à la carte menus. The lobby also opens to a pool area with a vast pool, slides, and a sand bar which offers a delightful array of specialty alcoholic beverages.

The second floor hosts the conference centers, ballrooms, and gathering spaces. On this floor, you can find doors leading to Bay Lake. Opposite of that is the room that previously held The Pirates and Pals Fireworks Voyage. Also nearby is the check-in desk for the California Grill, a deluxe table-service restaurant that features breathtaking views overlooking the Magic Kingdom and Cinderella Castle. The California grill views are to die for — perfect for celebrating anniversaries, birthdays, honeymoons and other special occasions.

All your troubles and worries about what to eat vanish when you get to the fourth floor — it’s the dining hub of Disney’s Contemporary Resort. Restaurants like Chef Mickey’s (where you can meet the Fab Five over Mickey waffles), Contempo Café (where you can get your quick-service fix), and the Outer Rim (where you can grab a quick beverage) offer a variety of choices for even the pickiest person in your family. You can also find a variety of shopping locations here too — such at the Fantasia Store for kids, the B.V.G for adults, and the Fantasia Market for that tooth brush you forgot to pack. This floor also houses the famed monorail station of Disney’s Contemporary Resort, where you’ll pass through a temperature check and security entrance before boarding. Outside, this floor has a spectacular view of Bay Lake Tower, Magic Kingdom, and the monorail loop.

While the majority of the rooms in Disney’s Contemporary Resort feature to queen-size beds, there are a handful of king-sized rooms. Recently, a large portion of the rooms have been blocked off for an extensive remodel once again — this time to be re-themed to Disney-Pixar’s The Incredibles. Don’t forget to check out Mary Blaire’s artwork that is featured on the prominent wall inside the Contemporary Resort while going to your room. Mary Blaire was one of Disney’s original imagineers who was responsible for the look and feel of It’s A Small World!

Complete Guide to Contemporary Resort (w/ review)

Complete Guide to Contemporary Resort (w/ review)

Disney’s Contemporary Resort is one of the original hotels still standing at Walt Disney World.

It debuted on October 1, 1971, the same day the Magic Kingdom opened its gates. So, you might even say it’s an iconic resort, especially since the Monorail runs straight through it.

This is also 1 of 8 Deluxe Resort hotels (not including Deluxe Villas) on Disney World property. The resort is described as “ultra-modern,” with unforgettable views, an iconic A-frame main tower, and a Garden Wing.

Contemporary is also located next door to Bay Lake Tower , a Disney Vacation Club Resort.

As a Deluxe Resort at Disney World, Contemporary is more expensive and includes different amenities compared to Value and Moderate Resorts.

Here’s everything you need to know about the resort.

In this article

Pros and Cons

Pros:  Can walk to Magic Kingdom, easy to get to most other resorts using monorail or MK buses, views of Magic Kingdom fireworks, can view Electrical Water Pageant from hotel, 50-minute specialty cruises for up to 10-12 people available at the dock, large rooms, salon on site, rooms themed to The Incredibles

Cons:  Cons: Pool isn’t anything special, theming seems sterile to some people, bus transportation can be shared with other hotels, can be noisy from Chef Mickey’s

Resort category:  Deluxe

Resort area:  Magic Kingdom

Address & Phone Number 4600 North World Drive Lake Buena Vista, Florida 32830-8413 (407) 824-1000

You can find the Contemporary in the Magic Kingdom Resort Area and it’s literally located right across from Magic Kingdom park.

The Contemporary is beloved by many and is a popular choice for guests. Not only does the resort have three forms of transportation and a walkway to the Magic Kingdom, but the Contemporary offers great views of Cinderella Castle and Space Mountain. Also located nearby is Bay Lake Tower , a Disney Vacation Club resort.

The resort is also filled with history, including a 90-foot-tall mural designed by legendary Imagineer and artist Mary Blair who was responsible for the overall design of “it’s a small world.”

The Contemporary is definitely a classic. Here’s what else you need to know.

Disney used to have a service where you were able to purchase items in the parks and then have them delivered to your resort’s gift shop. However, that service has been unavailable for several years now.

Although parking at Disney World resort hotels used to cost a nightly fee for resort guests, Disney has changed their policy so that parking is now  free  for all on-site resort guests. This change was implemented on January 10, 2023.

Valet parking is also available for $33 per night.

Complimentary standard self-parking is available for non-resort guests exploring dining, shopping, entertainment, and other experiences during the day.

We also have a complete  Walt Disney World parking  guide you can browse.

Important: Valet parking might not always be available.

Contemporary Buildings

The Contemporary has 2 sections of rooms. These are separate areas from Bay Lake Tower, which is its own individual Disney Vacation Club hotel, even though it is on the same property.

Bay Lake Tower and the main Contemporary Resort Tower are connected by the Sky Way Bridge, allowing for accessibility especially when it comes to dining and other amenities.

As for the Contemporary rooms, they are located in the following buildings:

Contemporary Resort Tower

contemporary resort tower

This is the main tower, where you can find the lobby, the Monorail station (it enters and exits the tower), gift shops, dining, access to buses, views of Magic Kingdom, and more.

The rooms provide different views, including Cinderella Castle and Space Mountain, Bay Lake, and more.

There are interior hallways, which means as soon as you exit your room, you’ll see the hustle and bustle of the second level that houses Chef Mickey’s, the Monorail, and more.

Contemporary Resort Garden Wing

The Garden Wing is adjacent to the main tower with some rooms offering views of Bay Lake, the gardens, the pool, or the marina.

Depending on the room, you may even be within close proximity to the parking lot, which is perfect for those with vehicles.

While not directly connected, there is a covered outdoor walkway that leads to the main tower where dining, transportation, gift shops, and more are located.

Disney’s Contemporary Resort: Main Tower Room Review

Disney’s Contemporary Resort is a popular hotel with unique design, good dining, and a variety of room types within walking distance of Magic Kingdom. Tour our newly remodeled Incredibles Disney’s Contemporary Resort Main Tower room which honors the mid-century modern aesthetic with a fun hint of Disney.

Contemporary Resort Location

The Contemporary Resort is a Magic Kingdom area resort on the Disney World monorail loop.

Disney’s Contemporary Resort Overview

Three lodging options were available when Disney World first opened. Guests chose from Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Disney’s Polynesian Resort , or Fort Wilderness when originally planning an on-site stay .

The distinctive A frame form of Disney's Contemporary Resort Main Tower is easily seen from Magic Kingdom

The sleek modern look of Disney’s Contemporary Resort has always been a key piece of the design. The Contemporary’s unique A-frame appearance, easily seen from Magic Kingdom, makes it instantly recognizable.

Recently remodeled, the lobby has new mid-century modern furniture and colorful, graphic murals. These changes make Contemporary’s lobby an inviting place to relax while waiting for your room or dining reservation.

Updated mid-century modern lobby at Disney's Contemporary Resort

Most of the resort activity takes place on the Contemporary’s fourth floor, better known as the Grand Canyon Concourse. The concourse is full of shops and open to the main tower hotel corridors above.

A multi-story mural adorns the wall of the Grand Canyon Concourse at Contemporary Resort

The most unique feature of Disney’s Contemporary Resort is the Disney World monorail station inside Grand Canyon Concourse. Surprisingly quiet, the monorail glides sneakily through the concourse. Go through security on the fourth floor and then ride an escalator upstairs to board the monorail.

Pro tip: Watch Magic Kingdom fireworks at the fourth floor outdoor viewing area near the Bay Lake Tower walkway.

Contemporary Resort Pools

Contemporary Resort has one of the most lackluster pools in all of Disney World. Feature Pool, which is the main option, has a modest 17 foot high waterslide and not much of a theme. Near Feature Pool, Bay Lake Pool is an all ages leisure pool where guests can relax with a view of Bay Lake.

While we look forward to Stormalong Bay at Beach and Yacht Club we usually skip swimming at Disney’s Contemporary Resort.

Disney’s Contemporary Resort Dining

Delicious fish special at Steakhouse 71 perfectly prepared with vegetables

There are several on-site dining options at Contemporary Resort. Enjoy quick service at Contempo Cafe, character meals at Chef Mickey’s, or fine dining at California Grill or Steakhouse 71.

Chef Mickey’s

Donald Duck waves to guests at Chef Mickey's

Probably the best known Contemporary Resort dining option, Chef Mickey’s is an extremely popular character meal. Meet Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, and Pluto while enjoying the updated, and much improved, menu.

Steakhouse 71

The entrance of Steakhouse 71 off the lobby of Disney's Contemporary Resort leads to a fabulous meal and cocktail

Opened as part of the Disney World 50th Anniversary celebration , Steakhouse 71 is a fabulous addition to the Contemporary Resort. We enjoyed every aspect of our meal and thought the food quality was better than other similarly priced Disney World restaurants.

If you can’t snag a dining reservation, stop by Steakhouse 71 Lounge to check same day availability. Try one of their delicious, creative cocktails and something to eat from a limited lounge menu.

Contempo Cafe

Although Contempo Cafe has an uninspired menu, find tasty specialty themed treats here that change throughout the year. Mobile ordering and some basic options make this a convenient dining option in Contemporary Resort.

Disney’s Contemporary Resort Main Tower Room Review

The Incredibles pose in a large portrait outside the Contemporary Resort Main Tower rooms

The Incredibles theme is immediately evident while walking towards your Disney’s Contemporary Resort Main Tower room. Several Incredibles themed prints line the walls in a style perfectly matched to the new lobby decor.

The cool mid-century modern design from the lobby continues seamlessly into Disney’s Contemporary Resort Main Tower rooms. Entering the room you’ll find a closet on one side of the entrance hall and the bathroom on the other.

The closet is broken into two sections. One is filled with shelving units and an in-room safe while the other has a hanging rod plus drawers.

An adorable Incredibles supersuit decal adorns the back of the Contemporary Resort Main Tower room closet

The closet space is functional, but also adorable since each Incredible’s supersuit hangs inside. This detail is a sophisticated way to incorporate the Incredibles theme into Disney’s Contemporary Resort Main Tower rooms.

Beverage cooler and Keurig coffee maker at Disney's Contemporary Resort Main Tower

Next to the closets is a shelving unit with more Incredibles details. Find a small beverage cooler in a cabinet below and a Keurig coffee maker on the shelf. Coffee supplies are tucked in the middle drawer.

Although small, the beverage cooler is a good place to stash groceries you’ve ordered ahead of time .

Disney’s Contemporary Resort Main Tower Bathroom

Across from the closets is a soft close sliding barn door leading into a large bathroom. The heavy door effectively keeps sound and light from spilling into the bedroom when the door is closed.

Double sink in front of a monorail themed mirror at Disney's Contemporary Resort Main Tower

A large mirror above double sinks has a subtle monorail and Contemporary resort decal. Sleek quartz countertops above and shelves below provide plenty of bathroom storage.

A tub and shower combination with either a rain or handheld showerhead closes with a sliding glass door. Although the spacious shower looks cool, getting in and out is awkward. Unfortunately, this could be difficult for those with mobility issues or small children.

As part of Disney’s commitment to sustainability, the Contemporary Resort Incredibles Main Tower bathrooms have shared toiletries. Instead of individual bottles expect eco-friendly shared shampoo, conditioner, and body wash secured to the shower wall.

A pocket door closes off the toilet from the rest of the Contemporary Resort Main Tower bathroom

A pocket door closes the toilet off from the rest of the bathroom which makes it easy for multiple people to get ready simultaneously. A built-in nightlight is the perfect hint of light for late night bathroom breaks.

Contemporary Resort Incredibles Main Tower Bedroom

The Contemporary Main Tower room layout is functional, but not as spacious as a Contemporary Resort Garden Wing Room . However, being in the main tower instead of the garden wing is a cool experience.

There are two different Contemporary Resort Main Tower bedroom options: a king room or two queen room. Both main tower rooms have a fold down day bed built into the couch.

A convertible couch turns into a fold down day bed at Disney's Contemporary Resort

This additional day bed means room for another guest in each room type. Contemporary Resort Incredibles Main Tower king rooms actually sleep three people while a two queen accommodates up to five guests.

Contemporary Resort Main Tower bedrooms have the same general set up as other remodeled Disney rooms like Disney’s Wilderness Lodge or Grand Californian at Disneyland. Expect platform beds with storage underneath, laminate flooring, and charging stations everywhere.

Two queen beds with Edna Mode and Frozone pillows greet you in a Contemporary Main Tower room

We loved the Frozone and Edna Mode accent pillows as another subtle nod to the Incredibles and a nearly hidden monorail on the lampshade. These fun details give the room a sophisticated theme versus a more over the top design like Art of Animation .

Our two queen Contemporary Resort Main Tower platform beds were very comfortable. We also love the built-in nightstand and charging stations on each side of the beds.

The couch is a great place to relax and part is still usable even when the bed is folded down. A futuristic oval table makes having breakfast in the room or working easy.

Disney’s Contemporary Resort Main Tower Balcony

Disney's Contemporary Resort Main Tower Theme Park view overlooking Space Mountain and Cinderella Castle

One of our favorite things about Disney World deluxe resorts is most of them have a walkout balcony area. Open the sliding door to a small private balcony with two chairs and a side table.

We splurged on a Contemporary Resort Main Tower Theme Park view. Watching Magic Kingdom fireworks from the balcony at night with matching music piped through our TV was wonderful.

Contemporary Resort Main Tower Lake View rooms have sweeping views of Bay Lake during the day. At night watch the Electrical Water Pageant with lights and retro music float by.

Disney’s Contemporary Resort Main Tower Room Cons

The elevators in Disney’s Contemporary Resort Main Tower are painfully slow. Lots of people walk over from Magic Kingdom for meals at Contemporary. This means a steady flow of elevator traffic and not enough capacity. It was not unusual to have to wait several minutes for an elevator during our stay.

We were extremely surprised how quiet our Contemporary Resort Main Tower Room was despite being open to the Grand Canyon Concourse. However, we were on the eighth floor and on the opposite side of the concourse from Chef Mickey. I think guests on lower levels and closer to Chef Mickey’s might have more of a noise issue.

Our Disney’s Contemporary Resort Main Tower room has the following great features:

  • Stunning views
  • Fun Incredibles details
  • Laminate floors
  • Split bathroom with double sinks
  • Beverage cooler
  • Keurig coffee maker
  • Ample plugs

Contemporary Resort In-Room WiFi

In-room WiFi is included in your resort stay. Our WiFi worked well, but we had to log in multiple times per day which was slightly annoying.

Disney’s Contemporary Resort Parking

Self-parking is complimentary for resort guests while valet parking costs $33 per night at Disney’s Boardwalk Inn and Villas

Disney’s Contemporary Resort Transportation To Parks

Disney World monorail glides through the Contemporary Resort on its way to Magic Kingdom

Contemporary Resort to Magic Kingdom

Walking to Magic Kingdom is one of the best things about Disney’s Contemporary Resort. The Magic Kingdom walkway is only about a half mile long plus has its own dedicated security screening area. Walking from Contemporary to Magic Kingdom is the quickest and easiest way to access this popular park.

If you need to save your steps, take the monorail from Disney’s Contemporary Resort to Magic Kingdom. The monorail stops at the Transportation and Ticket Center, Polynesian Resort , and Grand Flordian before dropping guests at Magic Kingdom.

Disney’s Contemporary Resort to Epcot

Getting to Epcot from Contemporary uses the monorail system, but requires a transfer. Hop on the Contemporary Resort monorail and exit at the Transportation and Ticket Center.

Follow the signs to transfer to the Epcot monorail line and then it is a direct trip from the Transportation and Ticket Center to Epcot.

Contemporary Resort to Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, and Disney Springs

Grab a bus to Animal Kingdom, Disney Springs, or Hollywood Studios. The Contemporary Resort bus stop is just outside the lobby on a walkway between Bay Lake Tower and the Contemporary.

Overall Impression Of Disney’s Contemporary Resort Main Tower Rooms

The design, location, and clever use of space makes the Incredibles Contemporary Resort Main Tower room a good choice when visiting Disney World. We appreciate the convenience of walking to Magic Kingdom and the new delicious option of Steakhouse 71.

disney contemporary resort room tour

UPDATE: Check out this tool for determining which room numbers and areas of the Contemporary Resort you’d like to request !

The Contemporary Resort has 500 guest rooms in the 14-story Tower, and 250 guest rooms in the remaining Garden Wing. (Though there used to be two Garden Wings flanking the Contemporary Tower, the South Garden Wing was demolished in 2006/7 to make way for Bay Lake Towers.

ROOM TYPES, BY SECTION

  • Garden Wing: Standard View, Garden Wing King, Garden Wing Deluxe Room, Garden Wing 1 Bedroom Suite (max 7 people), Garden Wing Hospitality Suite (max 6 people).
  • Tower: Standard Room Bay Lake View, Standard Room Magic Kingdom View, Standard Room Atrium Club Level, Magic Kingdom View Atrium Club Level, Standard Room King—Tower Club, Standard Room Tower Club, 1-BR Suite—Bay Lake—Tower Club (sleeps 6), 1-BR Suite—MK View—Tower Club (sleeps 6), 2-BR Suite—MK—Tower Club (sleeps 10), 2-BR Suite—Bay Lake—Tower Club (sleeps 8), VP Suite—Bay Lake—Tower Club (sleeps 8), Presidential Suite—MK—Tower Club (sleeps 8).

ROOM TYPES, BY COST

1. Standard: Standard rooms, with 2 queen beds and a day bed or 1 king bed and a day bed, are the most prevalent at the Contemporary. These offer about 400 sq. ft. of living space.

2. Deluxe: Deluxe rooms can be found in the Garden Wing only.

3. Suites: The Contemporary has suites in both the Tower and the Garden Wing sections of the resorts. The Garden Wing offers one-bedroom and hospitality suites. The Tower offers one- and two-bedroom suites as well as the VP and Presidential suites. As is customary at Disney resorts, better view and more room equals more money! Most suites sleep 6; 2-bedroom suites can sleep 8, 9, or 10 depending on the room (see room types above for specific numbers).

4. Concierge-Level: The Concierge Level Floors are on levels 12 (Atrium Club Concierge) and 14 (Tower Club Concierge) of the Contemporary Tower section. Only standard rooms can be found on the 12th floor. Tthese are exactly the same as the standard rooms on lower floors, but have larger balconies and access to the concierge services and amenities. Floor 14 has both standard rooms and all Tower Suites. Guests on both floors have identical access to concierge services prior to and during their stay, complimentary food items, and concierge lounges. Concierge level amenities also include turndown service.

ROOM PREFERENCE

Tower vs. Garden Wing

Because most of the hotels amenities, restaurants, transportation options (including the Monorail), and shops reside in the Tower, rooms in the Tower are more desirable, and therefore more expensive. Tower rooms also promise a balcony. Garden Wing rooms require and outdoor walk to the Tower and its amenities and do not have balconies. While most guests would prefer staying in a Tower room, guests in Garden Wing rooms have better access to the pool, marina, and beach, and still have the same short walk to the Magic Kingdom!

Guests in the Tower have views of either Bay Lake or the Magic Kingdom/Parking Lot/Seven Seas Lagoon. Guests in the Garden Wing have a water, garden, or parking lot view. As is true in so many Disney resorts, view is paramount at the Contemporary. Disney recently started charging a premium for rooms fronting the Magic Kingdom Theme Park.

Room Amenities

All rooms include a refrigerator, a small safe for valuables, a coffee maker with complimentary coffee and tea, an ironing board and iron, and Wi-Fi access. Although the Contemporary used to outfit every room with a computer, this is no longer the case.

Prices on Contemporary rooms in 2016 range from $400 to $3,545 per night (the highest rate is for a 2-bedroom suite in the Bay Lake Tower Club Level during the winter holidays). Room pricing is based on type of room (standard, suite, concierge), view (Magic Kingdom, Bay Lake, Garden, Parking Lot), and “season.”

Pricing by season is Disney’s way of saying, “when there’s higher demand for the room, we’ll make you pay more!” Disney has several seasons, but most of them fall into three categories: “value season,” including the slowest times of the year (e.g. after Labor Day in September and after New Year’s Day in January); “regular season,” including months like May and October, during which Disney still sees good traffic, but the theme parks are not maxed out; and “peak season,” including most school holidays such as spring break, summer, and the holiday season. Disney is busiest during Christmas!

For more information on pricing, including seasonal rates and in-depth room descriptions, visit DisneyWorld.com’s Contemporary Resort Pricing Page .

ROOM REQUESTS

All Disney resorts take room requests, such as adjoining rooms, rooms on certain floors, rooms in certain sections of the hotel, etc. The only guarantees you have on your room are the guarantees you pay extra for (king bed, certain views, suites, etc.). Make your requests when you first book your room, then call to confirm that your requests have been entered into your reservation information about 5 days prior to your arrival. Once you arrive, work with your front desk check-in Cast Member to get the best room available at your price point.
