Owner of popular El Paso restaurant Track One dies

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA)-- The Owner of Track One restaurant, Ken McDermott, died Tuesday, according to a post made by the restaurant via social media.

The post stated the restaurant closed Wednesday in remembrance of McDermott.

The restaurant said he died peacefully along side loved ones.

"He’s been the tip of the spear of Track One for over 3 decades with all its up and downs. Thank you all for the continuous support throughout all these years," the Facebook post said.

The restaurant will return to normal hours Thursday.

Award-winning Le Jefe Tex -Mex restaurant to close permanently after 6 years

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — El Jefe Tex-Mex restaurant announced it will be closing for good on April 28.

The business is located at on Edgewood Avenue South in the historic Murray Hill neighborhood.

“It is with heavy hearts that we make this announcement,” said partner Chef Scott Schwartz. “We would like to thank the wonderful community of Murray Hill and all of our customers for their support.”

El Jefe Tex-Mex opened in the summer of 2018 after completing a renovation of what was formerly the Curry Thomas hardware store.

Shortly after its opening, the award-winning restaurant navigated the COVID-19 pandemic closure by feeding nurses at the State COVID testing center. After reopening, it continued to serve as a beloved neighborhood restaurant.

The establishment has won numerous accolades as one of the best tacos and Tex-Mex restaurants in the City of Jacksonville. It was named “4 Best Tex-Mex Spots in Jacksonville” by First Coast News, “Seven Best Taco Spots in Jax” by Jacksonville Restaurant Reviews and “5 Best Spots for Queso” by Unation.

Known for authentic Tex-Mex cuisine, including puffy tacos and fresh margaritas, the 158-seat restaurant will be closed permanently after dinner service on April 28, 2024.

El Paso health inspectors cited a Mexican restaurant for 19 health violations in April. The violations ranged from the refrigerator temperature out of safe range to an employee with long facial hair prepping food without a beard guard on.

A score of 70 or above is passing. A score of 60 or below will initiate the closure of the establishment.

An inspection conducted on any given day may not represent the establishment's overall, long-term conditions. Restaurants that fail inspections are given an opportunity to address the violations for reinspection.

• Observed: Two onions with black & gray moldlike substance found inside container located on back area shelf. Note: All food items must be in good condition safe for consumers.
• Observed: Raw bacon stored in the same containers as corndogs and ham; found inside reach-in refrigerator. Note: To prevent cross-contamination, raw animal products must be stored below and away from raw or cooked ready-to-eat food.
• Observed: Can opener with foodlike residue on its blade. Two knives with foodlike residue found on knives rack. Ice scoop with foodlike residue. Note: Food-contact surfaces must be properly cleaned and sanitized.
• Observed: Two heavily dented cans of nacho cheese found on cans rack. Note: All dented cans must be removed from display, marked as damaged and/or discarded.
• Observed: Employee did not wash hands before washing dishes and switching work stations. Note: Food employees must properly clean their hands and exposed portions of their arms immediately before engaging in food preparation including working with exposed food, clean equipment and utensils, and unwrapped single-service and single-use articles and after various activities.
• Observed: Unlabeled purple chemical found in spray bottle located in dishwashing area. Note: Toxic substances must be properly labeled.
• Observed: No person with a manager certificate was present while conducting inspection during operating hours. Note: At least one person with a food protection manager must be on the premises at all operating times. Ms. Solis must obtain a manager certificate within 10 days to avoid a citation.
• Observed: Several rags found inside handwashing sink located in back area. Lettuce being dumped in front area handwashing sink. Knife and fork placed inside front area handwashing sink during inspection. Note: Handwashing sinks must only be used for handwashing and no other purpose.
• Observed: Chipped plastic spatula found inside utensil drawer. Note: Multiuse food-contact surfaces must be smooth, free of breaks, easily cleanable, etc.
• Observed: Employee with long facial hair prepping food without a beard guard on. Half-eaten torta found on top of cooking area shelf. Note: Employees must eat and drink only at designated area to avoid contamination.
• Observed: Rags found inside handwashing sink. Unattended used wiping cloths found throughout establishment, such as on top of prep tables and on top of cooking reach-in refrigerator and food. Note: In-between uses, wiping cloths must be stored in sanitizing solution.
• Observed: Onion, lime and chile containers placed directly on back-area floor. Uncovered salt near dishwashing area. Uncovered breading placed below greasy and dusty cooking area shelves with dangling particles. Note: Food must be protected from contamination by storing it in a clean, dry location, at least 6 inches above the floor, and away from sources of contamination.
• Observed: Reach-in refrigerator w/drawers at 43°F; later went up to 45°F; located below flat grill. Note: All cold holding units must be at a temperature of 41°F or below. TCS food found inside was placed in a working cold holding unit during inspection. Hold order was issued and copy given to manager. Must fix ASAP.
• Observed: Unlabeled white powdered food container found on shelf below back area prep table. Unlabeled liquid food containers found inside reach-in refrigerator. Note: All food items must be properly labeled.
• Observed: Shelves with accumulated grease and dust found in cooking area. Hood system with accumulated grease and dust. Note: Non-food contact surfaces must be properly cleaned and sanitized.
• Observed: Ceiling with accumulated dust near hood system. Damaged exposed wall with a hole found near ice machine. Hole in dining area wall, near front counter. Cracked floor tiles found in front counter area. Note: Physical facilities must be kept clean and in good repair. Walls, ceilings and floors must be smooth, non-absorbent and easily cleanable.
• Observed: Three-compartment sink leaking from faucet body when turned on. Note: Plumbing fixtures must be kept in good repair.
• Observed: Missing handwashing sign for cooking area handwashing sink. Note: All handwashing sinks must be supplied with a handwashing advisory sign, visible to all employees.

El Carnicero to close restaurant following Cinco de Mayo after 11 years in Lakewood

LAKEWOOD, Ohio — After 11 years of business, El Carnicero will close for good after one final Cinco de Mayo celebration.

Owner/chef Eric Williams shared the news on Facebook . He is closing the restaurant to focus his time on Momocho at 1835 Fulton Road in Cleveland, as well as spending time with family and friends, according to the post.

“El Carnicero was a successful extension of the mod Mex brand, I’m very proud of our accomplishments, + it’s been an amazing 11 years in Lakewood,” Williams wrote on Facebook. He added he wants to allow a new owner and concept to take over the space in Lakewood at 16918 Detroit Ave.

El Carnicero will be open for regular business hours through Sunday, May 5. The restaurant’s Facebook page also shared a post about the upcoming closure.

“We are extremely humbled that so many embraced ELC + that we were able to celebrate with you + succeed as long as we have,” the post reads. “[It’s] been an honor being a small part of the Lakewood community + for a restaurant to survive + thrive for 11 years is an accomplishment for which we can all be proud; but it’s time for a change.”

Used to only sell burritos, tortas and tacos only, now they are doing too much, and the meat was only pork. I remember the cook back in 86, he had 5 1/2 fingers on one hand. This place used to be great!!

It's a small place, I got Enmoladas and they serve you well with rice and beans too, they were very good would definitely recommend and they have a lot of foods to choose from :)

Menudo, chilaquiles, gordita de chicharrón, carne en su jugo excellent flavor. Just call in advance to order that way don't have to wait 20 min specially on weekendo

Amazing home made Mexican food. Gem of a place! Owners are kind people too. When you walk in, you're immediately greeted with the robust aromas. Grab a table and order the nopales and enjoy the best salsa ever! Oh and their beans are solid too

Feasible and tasty! Authentic and delicious. I had tacos de carne asada, very tasty and authentic. I really can't say much about the service other than when we called in to order there was no fuss and easy to communicate. Our order was ready in minutes.

We've been coming here for years! It is delicious Mexican food. The lady that works here is very nice but not sociable; who cares!? We don't come to socialize, we come to eat!! If you are around Huntington Park you should try this spot! You won't regret it. Unless you are an obnoxious person who thinks that everyone is supposed to be delightful, you will love it. This is the real world. Some people are just not people pleasers and they need a job so get over it. I love the sope with rice and beans. Also, the tacos dorados are yummy. I'm sure the mole and caldo are yummy because my mom always gets it. The people who give this place have good taste in Mexican food and have high standards for it. -have a lovely day!!

Ok.. I just found the best place to eat if u are craving some authentic Mexican food.. the place is tiny but about flavor who cares.. I came with my family and all we were 5 and I paid like 60 buck so is very affordable ... they have caldos and menudo which I tried was the boom.. hand made tortillas just put the cherry on top.. definable I will come back to try all.. Ps : try the birria .. u won't regret it..
