Things to do

Europe is a magnificent continent that's so versatile in what it offers visitors to see and do. Here is just a fraction of the types of places you can visit during your holidays here:

Italy:  A blend of good food, good wine and stunning sights - that's what Italy is famous for and is a must for anyone visiting Europe. There's possibly nowhere else on earth where you will find gelato, pizzas and pastas as delectable as what is available on holidays in Italy. Take a break from eating and visit the sinking city of Venice with its criss-crossing waterways or the ancient city of  Rome  with its world famous Colosseum and Pantheon or perhaps the famous leaning tower of Pisa.

Germany:  Located in the heart of Europe, Germany has become a popular tourist destination for people visiting from across the world. The country combines stunning scenery with a vibrant culture and cities, to create an exciting destination for everyone to visit.  The Black Forest  and Christmas Markets are a particular highlight for people visiting this fascinating country.

France:  Having delighted tourists for decades, France has become a popular destination for anyone holidaying in Europe. With its quaint coffee-shops, patisseries and bistros, France has truly become one of the culinary centres of Europe.  Paris  is one of the many cities within France that features high on every tourists 'to visit list' with famous sights such as the Arc de Triomphe, Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame. The South Coast of France is a hotspot for beach holidays in places such as  St Tropez .

Belgium:  A destination steeped in history, fantastic food and culture, Belgium has become a fascinating place to visit for anyone who happens to find themselves in Europe. With strong connections to the conflicts of World War 1,  Ypres  has thousands of visitors each year who come to see the  Menin Gate . Or perhaps pay a visit to Brussels, Belgium's capital city, steeped in history and full to the brim of cosmopolitan bars and restaurants to relax in.

Tips & Advice

To help you have an enjoyable holiday in Europe, take a look at these useful tips and advice provided by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO):

Health and Travel Insurance When travelling to countries within Europe you should always be sure you have applied for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before leaving. Should you fall ill whilst on holiday, this card will entitle you to basic medical treatment as long as you present it whilst staying in countries within the European Economic Area. However, the card will only entitle you to state provided medical treatment. It is not valid for non-urgent or on-going treatment. Therefore, it is recommended that you always check you have the correct travel insurance which will cover the cost of treatment and repatriation as well should you need it. It is advisable that you have access to additional funds in case you have to pay for treatment whilst you're away.

Crime As with every country you visit it is important that you always remain alert to the risks of crime. In some European destinations, tourists are seen as easy targets, so where possible keep your valuables in the hotel safe and avoid carrying large quantities of cash.

Always buy your own drinks and never leave them unattended. Alcoholic beverages in foreign countries tend to be much stronger than in the UK, so it is wise to know your limits.

It would also be advisable to check the individual country pages before you leave to get a better idea of crime levels for where you are visiting.

Local Laws and Customs Countries across Europe will have different laws and customs so it is best to check the individual country before you travel.

Entry Requirements When British Citizens are travelling to most European Countries, no visa is needed for entry, however when entering Turkey you will need one. Therefore, it is best to check each individual country before travelling.

Passport validity also varies and some countries require a period of validity beyond the date you leave so it is best to check if this applies to the country you are visiting.

Any other nationality looking to visit countries in Europe must contact their local embassy to check visa and passport requirements.

Europe is the second smallest continent in the world and consists of just 4 million square miles.

European Tours for Singles

European tours for singles

Do you feel Europe calling your name, but you’re travelling alone and wondering where to next for a solo travel tour of Europe?   Travelling is one of the most exciting ways to spend those hard earned holiday hours, but alone may not be your idea of fun.   You’ve been entranced by all those wonderful images of Europe, or maybe returning to memories of trips gone by.  And now you’re ready to set off on your own, but not ready to travel alone. Hats off to all the intrepid solo travellers but if European tours for singles is more your travel style then you’re going to want to know how to get it right. What you really want to know is how to seek out the best European tours for singles!  One guarantee on joining group tours for singles in Europe  is that they’re filled with friendly chatter and the ability to share experiences with new friends.

When you’re planning a solo tour of Europe , there’s an intimidating number of tasks that you would normally complete if your making plans on your own, such as organising transport from stop to stop, booking accommodation and planning your itinerary. You skip all this hassle – a singles group for Europe tours can take care of all this for you.

What’s Your Europe Solos Tour Match?

First step, working out what you want from your time away from home? You know you like the comfort and friendliness of travelling with others - the safety and organisation done for you!

Now hone-in on the pace – are the best group tours for singles in Europe with lots of stops and lots of destinations? You love the pace to be fast and the experience to be jam packed. Or is your style more laid back, preferring 2, 3 or even more nights of stay in each place?

When deciding on your solos tour of Europe, spend the time reading the published tour itinerary day by day – you can quickly get a sense of the pace, whether days are filled with activities on the European tours for singles, or you want a deep, rich experience, immersed in one culture and country for your solo tour of Europe. You  want to taste all the delights each place has to offer,  and explore slowly and thoroughly.  There’s no one best European tour for singles – it all gets down to what you want out of your trip. Research the best tour companies for solos in Europe . Look for award winners and traveller testimonials – nothing like hearing from travellers that have gone before you. You can soon work out the best European tours for singles !

Once you narrow the choice with the tour pace, now decide what’s important to you about your night’s rest;  is it budget over quality, and just the essentials is good enough for you, or you like a bit more comfort of true luxe style? You’ve checked off your tour pace and accommodation rating – now a big factor – is big better than small?

Is Big Better than Small?

There’s no right answer when choosing a big coach tour over a small group solos only tour experience – it’s personal choice and pros and cons to each when you’re travelling solo. But, here’s a few pointers to mull over when you’re narrowing down your choices.

  • Small solo travel groups are a great way to get to know all your fellow solo travel buddies, and enjoy a real sense of belonging.
  • Big groups are fun when it comes to party time and may save some dollars but the flip side is that you’re just another one of those big coaches hauling through Europe.
  • Small groups will offer a more authentic experience as you can visit places that the big bus tours simply can’t – like dining in smaller local restaurants, like a local – just can’t be done on a big bus tour.
  • The tour manager on the best European tours for singles is an invaluable resource when it comes to recommending where to go and where to eat. They’ll know what sights to see, how to chat with the locals and how to navigate those maps! This is especially helpful when you’re travelling by yourself because you don’t have someone else to help you make these decisions! Small groups can offer more individual attention, but if you don’t need that then a big coach tour may be for you.

So much to consider but thinking about the group size sounds like a great way to measure the best European tours for singles when it comes to making your pick.

Crunch Time. How Much for Travelling Solo?

Travelling solo and we’re all thinking the same – the dreaded single supplement. The ultimate European tours for singles offer reasonably priced single supplements. It’s mostly unavoidable and a major single traveller’s gripe – paying more because you’re not sharing a room. But the other way to think of it is that we all pay the same price for the hotel, just that if you share a room, you’re sharing the cost.  Hopefully it puts the single supplement in a new light – it’s just that tours and hotels can promote a lower price based on sharing – the price looks appealing but it’s not a reality when you’re travelling solo, and you’re not up for sharing.   So, pay the extra and guarantee you get your own single room while travelling on your solo tours Europe but check you won’t give away too many of your hard earned holiday dollars needlessly. The best tour companies for solo travellers don’t inflate these supplements, and they keep them to a minimum. Alternatively, the best European tours for singles give you the choice to also share with a person of the same sex. For some of us, that’s a happy outcome – you know if you’re a good sharer or not. And if you’re happy to share it’s a nice saving.

Heads Up On The European Room Size

When choosing a company offering group tours of Europe for singles it’s a good idea to enquire what size rooms are offered for solo tours to Europe. Many hotels in Europe have an undesirable selection of single rooms; smaller and pokier than a room for two, and often in the least appealing location of the hotel.  We can’t say why rooms for single travellers whereever built like this, but it happens. And, if you’re travelling solo that last thing you want is to be made to feel like a second class citizen, shuffled off to the least appealing room in the hotel.  Big tip – check with the tour operator how they book rooms for single travellers! Perhaps they’ll offer you double rooms on your solos tour Europe, but perhaps they don’t.  Even better, perhaps the accommodation chosen by your European tours for singles provider are unique and authentic in style and everyone is different!

Making Your Europe Solo Travel Plans

If you’re one that likes to put your own touches to your travel plans then think about ways to plans this for your solo tours Europe. A great way to start out is taking a day or so before your solo travel tour starts. Ease into it – if you’ve got a long flight and time differences, it’s a good idea to pad in a few extra days to recharge and adjust to your new time zone.

Plus, in free time, investigate options to make your own discoveries or even book other half day touring experiences. There’s endless options and in big cities throughout Europe you can find fun experiences to join for a few hours, half a day or more or even night time fun like bar hopping tours – check out tours on AirBNB or TripAdvisor – a great place to start to get the ideas flowing. So now the fun begins! You’ve got a great idea of what your best European tours for singles looks like. You’re armed with suggestions for choosing the group tours of Europe for singles that will be  just right for you!

The best solos tours in Europe are the ones where you’ve down the leg work, narrowed down what you want and how you like to travel but left all the left all the hard yakka to someone else – choose your tour, book on, pack and go!

Europe Escorted Tours & Guided Holidays

Escorted tours & guided holidays to europe.

Scenic beauty, a fascinating artistic heritage and an epic history, all of this and more makes Europe a dream destination for curious travellers wanting a Europe guided tour. Lovely landscapes offer a diverse feast for the eyes, whether you head south to Spain and Italy ,  or east to Croatia and Romania or explore some of it's most beautiful islands such as Sicily, Sardinia or Malta . Alternatively, stay closer to home as you explore the French Riviera .

There are so many options and variety on our European tours. Discover the rich historical sites of Turkey - such as the legendary city of Troy or head to warmer climes to find beaches in all shapes and sizes, from dramatic and rugged to golden and idyllic. Then there’s Italy’s Tuscan hills , which are dotted with Cypress trees, while pastel-shaded houses cling precariously to the glorious  coastline of Amalfi . And if you want to reach really dizzy heights, a holiday to the Swiss Alps offers jaw-dropping views in every direction. There’s a long list of man-made wonders to consider when choosing your European tour, too. Italy is crammed with treasures from top to toe, with Rome’s Colosseum, the  Leaning Tower of Pisa and Florence’s Duomo for starters. The romance of France , and the magnificent Spain’s Alhambra Palace  will leave you utterly spellbound. And you’ll wonder how on earth Greece’s Meteora Monasteries were built on towering rocks in the 11th century. The chance to step back in time is never too far away wherever your travels take you, with well-preserved historic treasures around every corner. Delve into the seemingly endless alleyways in Malta , where the Knights of St John would have roamed in the 14th century. Or stroll through Italy’s myriad medieval villages, which stand to this day untouched by time. Ponder life back in 79AD when the well-to-do  city of Pompeii  was smothered in hot ash by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. And you can walk in gladiators’ footsteps in Roman amphitheatres scattered right across the land. Sightseeing aside, a wonderful way to experience your chosen European holiday hot spot is through its cuisine. A cheese fondue, Kalamata olives, nutty olive oil, sun-ripened tomatoes, fish freshly plucked from the sea, earthy truffles – each country, and each region boasts its own specialities. And nothing quite beats breaking bread with the locals, or drinking a glass of wine in the very vineyard where the grapes were grown.

Destinations in Europe

The Blue Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey

Sitting astride two continents, a position that has given rise to a culture that reflects both East and West, our holiday packages to Turkey show a country where European aspirations mix comfortably with Asian traditions. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia, Bulgaria

With a beguiling blend of nature and history, you're guaranteed an unforgettable adventure in Bulgaria. Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia

An escorted tour to Croatia offers the opportunity to discover a country that has, in recent times, become one of the most popular destinations in Europe thanks to a rewarding mix of sublime scenery and towns and cities that are positively brimming with history.

Tree silhouette , Northern Lights, Finland

From winter magic to irresistible summers; wild beauty to contemporary culture, you can expect vitality and excitement whenever during the year you visit Finland. Colourful clock tower in St. Tropez, France

France is a fantastic place for a holiday. Everywhere you go, there’s something new and exciting to experience. Here no two regions are the same, and whether you prefer captivating countryside chateaus or stylish seaside resorts, you're all but guaranteed a good time. Plus, there’s the added benefit of not having too long a journey; at its shortest, France lies just 20 miles off the coast of Kent and is easily accessible using all major transport methods.

Ancient ruins in Greece

An array of archaeological gems offers much insight into this country’s vast and ancient heritage.

Amalfi coastline Italy

If you’re looking for a holiday packed with adventure, Italy is where you should go. A land of warmth and beauty, Italy is the place for fine art, fine food and fine living – a toast to the heritage of Europe’s favourite (and only!) boot-shaped country! Escorted tours of Italy with Travelsphere are an excellent way to make the most of this enchanting destination.

Church building in Vilnius, Lithuania

If you want to be enchanted on your holidays, Lithuania is the place to go. Tradition and folklore are deeply ingrained into Lithuanian culture; here, songs, stories and tales only serve to enhance the quietly eccentric vibe that abounds within this beautiful country.

Lake and mountain range in Austria

The stuff of fairy tales, Austria is famously beautiful. Characterized by mountain villages, baroque architecture, Imperial history and rugged Alpine terrain, no other country waltzes so elegantly between the urban and the rural mode of life.

Small boat cruising along a German river, Germany

A country where medieval architecture meets the modernity of today’s world, Germany is where fairy-tales come to life. Here treats and temptations are abounding in the form of soul-stirring scenery, spirit-lifting culture and much more.

Hungarian Parliament building at night

The crowning jewel of Central Europe, Hungary is a truly awe-inspiring place to visit; studded with a mixture of architectural landmarks and grand neoclassical buildings, this is the place to be when it comes to enjoying a unique, enriching travel experience. There’s a prominent Turkish and Roman influence in the country’s culture – evident in the popularity of mineral spas – which only serves to make holidaymakers fall in love with it even more.

Waterfall Iceland

Defined by its dramatic landscape with volcanoes, geysers, hot springs and lava fields, Iceland is one of the world's most spectacular places. If you're a nature lover, there's no better place on the planet to admire breathtaking views and dramatic backdrops.

Sun shining in woods, England, UK

United Kingdom

There's a reason why we call the UK our very own green and pleasant land; boasting a unique heritage and unrivalled history, it's the envy of many other nations. From pulsing cities to stunning countryside, you’ll find a wide range of things to see and do here. The shared culture and distinct local flavours that contribute to the UK really must be seen to be believed.

Absolutely amazing trip - Travelsphere took care of everything while we sailed round exquisite islands finding hidden gems or places of historical interest at every stop. Highly recommend Charlotte Field

Europe Touring Holidays Frequently Asked Questions

Europe has an array of exciting destinations from Italy to Turkey to Croatia and many more, here's some good tours for you to choose from.

Italy has so much to offer from the colosseum to Pompeii to Venice – all locations you definitely won’t want to miss! To cover all these you will need to take the Grand Tour of Italy . 15 days exploring the country from Venice to Catania, Rome, Sorrento and Sicily on route!

Turkey tantalises the senses on our Treasures of Turkey holiday . You’ll go from the hustle and bustle of the grand bazaar to watching the sunset with wine in hand at Love valley, enjoying archaeological sites, mosques and hot springs along the way.

If the medieval era is your thing then our Discover Romania and enchanting Transylvania tour will be right up your street. You’ll visit Sibiu, with its 14th century Lutheran Cathedral. Go to Sighisoara, the birthplace of one of Transylvania's most notorious sons, Vlad the Impaler – the real-life inspiration for Dracula and of course you’ll stop off at Bran’s Castle itself! (better known as Dracula’s Castle) and visit a 300-year-old monastery – still home to several monks in Bucharest.

If island hopping is more your dream holiday then our Croatian Island hopping tour may float your boat. Travelling from Split to Solta and back again, on our luxury ship solely for our group! You’ll enjoy kayaking around the walls of Dubrovnik, swimming in secluded coves, bobbing around in an inflatable, and discovering interesting facts like ancient methods of air-conditioning, all accompanied by laughter and cheerful chatter of your shipmates!

There is so much to see and enjoy across Europe from Germany’s architecture, to Frances artistic attractions and an array of historical sites in Italy.

Key attractions not to be missed on your tours are:

Italy – The Colosseum, built in AD 70-80 using travertine, limestone and volcanic rock, seating over 80,000 spectators, it was most famously known for its gladiator fights but it was also the arena for re-enactments of famous battles and executions. More remarkably, it was also the set for simulated sea battles! The arena would be filled with water so vessels could float in during the shows and drained rapidly afterwards. Equally as interesting is the engineering behind this theatre. It had a retractable awning to protect its spectators from the bad weather! Also hidden beneath the colosseum was a warren of tunnels and cells which held the gladiators and animals captive before they were sent to fight.

Another site not to miss in Italy is Pompeii – a 440,000 square meter town that was tragically engulfed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79. Approximately 10 percent of the population died and the city was buried under lava and volcanic ash. The lava preserved the town which means you can walk the streets and see the well-preserved buildings such as the Lupanare (brothel), and thermopolium (the Roman equivalent of fast food).

France - The famous Eiffel Tower, at the centre of Champ de Mars in Paris, built to be the entrance to the World's Fair in1889.This world famous structure has not always been admired though, in fact Engineer Gustave Eiffel was greatly criticised by locals, calling it a monstrosity! Never did he or they imagine quite how successful and important a structure it would be today, with its 81 floors of exhibits, viewing decks, cafes and gift shops.

Venice – The floating city. A romantic location with over 118 islands connected by the canals that run through Venice. Grab a gondola and sit back, relax and take in the scenery.

Romania – Dracula’s Castle - Bram Stoker’s 1897 Gothic, horror novel Dracula may be imaginary, but the castle isn’t. It was the real life setting of the sinister novel and is located just outside of Brasov in Romania. Officially known as Bran Castle it includes all the weapons and armour that is mentioned in Bram’s book. As for the blood-sucker himself, Bram used Vlad the Impaler as his muse. A ruler who was notorious for brutal torture and demise of in excess of 10,000 people during his reign.

Turkey – Turkey has an array of wonders to offer from Mosques to palaces, to hot springs and the famous bazaars

There is so much delicious food to be tasted across Europe and such a variety from one country to another. From delightful seafood in Portugal , Greece and Croatia to perfect pasta dishes in Italy and world-famous desserts in Austria.

While in Romania you can try stuffed cabbage rolls and in Turkey , anyone with a sweet tooth must try the ancient, traditional pastry dessert of baklava.

There really is something for everyone.

Courtesy of Exodus Travels

Traveling solo on an Exodus Travels group trip means access to self-guided and guided excursions around the world for every type of traveler. Choose a walking wine holiday in Portugal or explore Egypt via cruise boat and sleeper train, for example. Additionally, its Exodus Edits collection offers shorter itineraries of up to five days and is geared towards travelers in their 30s and 40s—though they’re ideal for anyone looking for more vigorous activity such as ziplining and surfing in Costa Rica or sampling street eats and beach hopping in Sicily.

There is no single supplement fee when you room with a fellow traveler, and chances are you may end up with your own room anyway. Booking a travel itinerary with UK-based Exodus Travels includes a full refund should the company need to cancel your trip and a complimentary trip transfer to another tour or different person up to 21 days before the scheduled trip. Plus, travelers who book their third or more trips with Exodus receive a 5 percent discount on their next booking.

What’s more, the company works to curate trips that align with a number of United Nations sustainable development goals including goals for responsible consumption and production, empowering local communities, and climate action considerations. Exodus Travels (founded in 1974) was awarded Best Operator in National Geographic Traveller’s sixth annual Reader Awards in 2021.

Best for Ages 35-50 : El Camino Travel

Courtesy of Encounter Travel

According to El Camino Travel ’s founder, Katalina Mayorga, elder millennials are their strongest customer base. That means if you were born between 1980 and 1985 approximately, you’ll find yourself among curious, like-minded solo travelers looking to immerse themselves in destinations like Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia, and the Eastern European nation of Georgia. Some trips even add a professional photographer to capture shareable shots so you can remain in the moment.

All of El Camino’s guided, small group trips max out at 12 participants. They’re also curated with an ethos of preserving and protecting local culture, the environment, and communities. For example, some of their partners include the Environmental Research Institute Charlotteville in Tobago and La Sierra Artist Residency in Santa Marta, Colombia.

Best Sustainable : G Adventures

Courtesy of Intrepid Travel

G Adventures is particularly known for its sustainable, responsible ethos. The company works with small, locally-owned hotels and operators to ensure your travel dollars benefit the community you’re visiting; outlines policies around child and animal welfare practices; aims to reduce single-use plastics, and works to ensure experiences taking place in Indigenous communities align with community goals.

Founded in 1990, G Adventures specializes in small group adventure tours to a host of destinations from Asia to South America and Africa to the Arctic. Nearly half of the travelers on every trip are flying solo, and there’s no single supplement if you choose to bunk with a same-sex roommate. Or, select your own room for a fee.

A Chief Experience Officer leads each group tour and itineraries are searchable by travel style. For example, find wellness-centric trips like nine days of daily yoga, visits to Hindu temples, and partake in traditional healing ceremonies in Bali. Or travel with their partner, National Geographic, for an exclusive guided tour of South Africa’s Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden and a visit to Soweto township in Johannesburg, the home of Nelson Mandela.

G Adventures partnered with hostel booking service Hostelworld in 2021 to launch its Roamies itineraries. Its combination of backpacking and organized travel itineraries includes countries like Albania, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Vietnam. The trips are marketed to 18- to 35-year-olds, though like-minded individuals keen on budget travel and communal environments may enjoy these trips, too.

Best for True Solo Travel : Black Tomato

Courtesy of G Adventures

Black Tomato specializes in bespoke luxury travel experiences. For those interested in traversing around the world solo and willing to pay a premium for tailored itineraries, its adventurous or culturally immersive experiences may just be your ticket.

Your travels might look like hiking and biking in Patagonia, embarking on a spiritual pilgrimage through Bhutan and India, chasing glaciers and geysers in Iceland, or learning to cook Georgia and Armenia’s local dishes or Japan’s regional cuisine.

In 2017, Black Tomato launched its Get Lost adventure travel experience. With the support of a dedicated team, and without prior knowledge of where they're headed, Get Lost participants will find their way home from an undisclosed location. The location is selected based on a pre-travel questionnaire about which environment clients would like to immerse themselves in. Then, they show up at the airport and the adventure begins.

Best for Ages 25-39 : For The Love of Travel

Courtesy of Contiki

With 80 percent of individuals traveling with For The Love of Travel jet -setting solo, each trip is packed with opportunities to meet fellow Millennial and Gen Z travel enthusiasts. For example, within your small “crew” of up to 14 people, make new friends doing snow sports and unwinding in saunas in Lapland or devouring tacos and sipping mezcal in Mexico City. Trips range from four to nine days, including weekends in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain wilderness or an extended weekend in Costa Rica where you’ll hike through rainforests, relax in hammocks, and hike, bike, or surf.

According to company feedback, the average FTLOT traveler is 30 years old and interested in meeting new people while traveling . The company bills itself as a mid-range travel company, where “we might stay in a more basic hotel for a couple of nights so we can include a Michelin-worthy meal and a private catamaran ride.”

In 2022, FTLOT plans to offer at least 10 new itineraries including to Belize, Turkey, and Spain’s Basque Country. And for those with the flexibility, the company launched Sojrn in 2021 featuring month-long, themed stays in destinations like Cape Town—focused on biodiversity—and a fashion-oriented stay in Paris.

FTLOT requires an initial deposit and allows installment payments if not paid in full.

Best for 50+ : Overseas Adventure Travel Rates

Courtesy Flash Pack

Overseas Adventure Travel is primarily aimed at American travelers aged 50 and over. It offers guided itineraries to worldwide destinations, including Africa, Antarctica, Asia, and the South Pacific, with trips ranked by activity level and accompanied by a list of physical requirements to help select an itinerary that is best suited for you. For example, their Japan and South Korea itinerary advise that participants be able to carry their own luggage as the selected hotels do not have porter service.

Some of Overseas Adventure Travel’s most popular trips include 17 days of wending the Adriatic from Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina (think a walking tour in Dubrovnik, sampling traditional Bosnian food in Sarajevo, and exploring the countryside near Zagreb). On another popular trip, you spend 15 days traveling through Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, ending in Helsinki, Finland. All trips offer pre-and post-itinerary extensions, and either waive the single supplement entirely or offer a discount on a private room.

The company offers a free Roommate Matching Program which helps you find a like-minded, same-sex roommate. If they can’t find a match, your single supplement is deducted. Small group sizes typically average 13 travelers.

Overseas Adventure Travel won the Solo Travel Award for Best Tour in 2017 and 2018, thanks in large part to its policy of offering a limited number of single spaces for each itinerary.

Best Female : Wild Women Expeditions

Courtesy of Overseas Adventure Travel

It began as an all-women, Canada-based canoe tripping company in 1991, and Wild Women Expeditions is perfect for boundary-pushing women who want to travel independently and enjoy the safety and support of an organized tour. The company also prioritizes hiring female tour leaders and on-the-ground guides. It offers outdoor adventures for women of all ages and identities and with a range of physical abilities (“whether your greatest skill is tracking a storm or talking up a storm, summiting mountains or summoning courage, keeping your kayak in line or coloring outside the lines,” as the company describes).

The company travels to 31 destinations around the world like Egypt, Tanzania, and the Azores islands. Itineraries are typically adventure-based and are filtered on their website by activity, with options ranging from sailing to cycling and horse riding. Imagine yourself sea kayaking and snorkeling in the Galapagos or scaling glaciers in Alaska.

Most guests are solo travelers and there’s no single supplement to worry about as accommodation is typically in a shared room or cabin. Though if privacy is a priority, you can usually snag your own room for a nominal extra fee. Group sizes are kept small and social with between six and 14 women, depending on the itinerary you choose. The average group size is eight.

Wild Women Expeditions also takes care to curate trips that avoid or minimize the disturbance of wildlife; supports environmental education and advocacy projects; and partners with social justice and women’s rights organizations.

Best for Solo Parent Travel : Intrepid Travel

Courtesy of Wild Women Expeditions

Intrepid ’s family-themed holidays welcome adults traveling with children, including solo parents looking to travel with their kids without the stress of planning and coordinating a trip. Since each family’s travel needs and preferences are different, every itinerary includes an “essential trip information” section where Intrepid outlines whether the trip would be a good fit for you and your kids, as well as a physical rating from least to more strenuous activities.

For example, an itinerary through part of the Amazon Jungle in Peru advises the jungle can be very hot and humid, and that the weather can be unpredictable in the Andes. On the other hand, an 11-day trip to Borneo island in Southeast Asia lists a minimum age of 5 and outlines a range of accommodations from hotels to guesthouses and jungle camps; on a few occasions, travel times between destinations range between four to five hours. Trips to Costa Rica, Tanzania, China, and Morocco are also listed.

Individuals under 17 years typically receive a 10 percent discount, and the company requires that adults have at least one child under 18 years traveling with them. As part of Intrepid’s commitment to responsible travel, itineraries support initiatives surrounding sustainability and conservation, climate education, and preservation of Indigenous culture.

Best of Central Europe

To be honest, part of what made the trip fantastic was our group of 12- could not have had a better group to travel with- which is clearly luck, but a piece of our group being so cohesive was Nejca, our guide. She was perfect! Available but not pushy. Laid back, but willing to assert herself to make our experience the best. She made each person in the group feel special and appreciated. Thank you, Nejca! The itinerary was quite good as well. Although there were places I could have stayed for a day longer, I think it’s important to not stay too long and feel like time is wasted on a certain place on the tour. Transportation was efficient and Nejca did a great job getting us to our destinations easily and without rushing. Accommodations were very good- with the exception of Prague. Although our apartment was nice, it was clear that the residents of Prague feel that their space is being taken over by tourists- which is clearly true. I would have preferred to have stayed in a hotel in Prague-honestly, I would have paid more for it. Other than that, cannot day enough good things about the trip! Thank you!!

The Best of Eastern Europe Tour

The Best of Eastern Europe

Excellent trip covering many capitals and other cities in Central and Eastern Europe. There is a lot of free time included in the itinerary to explore on your own, so be prepared to make your own daily plans and venture out on your own or with fellow travelers. Almost every city has free (tips only) quality guides. Accommodations are all in centrally-located medium-level hotels. Some are better than others. As is common in Europe, around half of the hotels did not have air conditioning, only fans. Availability and quality of hotels differs by regions, and I found these hotels to be better than in tours run by G Adventures in other regions of the world. They are lower in quality to hotels in US and Canada. Don't expect a Ritz Carleton, and you won't be disappointed. Breakfasts are included, and they were fantastic everywhere - all-you-can-eat, with large assortment and excellent quality. All other meals are on your own, although the guide made arrangements to eat as a group on many nights (which is optional). Food is still relatively inexpensive in former Soviet bloc countries, not so in Berlin and Vienna. Transportation was excellent, and varied from private buses, minivans and taxis to public trains, metro, buses and trams. Be prepared to carry/roll your luggage for close to 1 km (about half a mile). In a few cities, larger buses and minivans are not allowed into historic centers of town, where hotels are located, during the day, so we had to walk. One of most memorable experiences for many travelers on our tour was a visit to Auschwitz concentration camp, which was included in the itinerary.

Europe Jewel Tour

Europe Jewel

Having Gustavo Gomes as a Team Leader and combination with Sebastiano as a Coach driver really made a difference in having a memorable experience our first trip in Europe.

Baltic Experience Tour

Baltic Experience

The Baltic Experience tour was a lot of fun! Our Tour Leader, Agata, was superb! The small tour size (we had six participants) meant we got to know each other well. The tour had a perfect mix of planned group activities and time to explore the sites on our own. The on-line tour description was accurate and extensive. Three cautions: Travel insurance is MANDATORY, somewhat expensive, and not included in the tour price. Many, like me, will commit to the tour not knowing this additional cost will be tacked on. Second, the tour sometimes involves significant walking (up to 30 minutes) from transportation facilities to hotels while carrying your own bags (two weeks of baggage), as well as walking tours that sometimes involve climbing as many as 800 steps. This is a tour for fairly young and fit participants. Finally, European hotels and home-stay facilities generally don't have air conditioning or screened windows, meaning sometimes in the summer you will have to choose between sleeping in hot, stuffy rooms or opening the windows for mosquitoes to enter. All that said, this was a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable experience and I would highly recommend it for fit, adventurous people with positive attitudes who can tolerate occasional less-than-luxurious accommodations.

European Cavalcade (End Paris, 18 Days) Tour

European Cavalcade (End Paris, 18 Days)

Excellent 18 days itineraries!

Balkan Kaleidoscope Tour

Balkan Kaleidoscope

This was also few years back touring several Balkan countries Bulgaria, Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, North Macedonia and Albania. If I remembered the hotel that my wife & I stayed in North Macedonia is like an attic room, I mentioned to the tour guide and our hotel in Albania with no elevators, we were in the top floor, not easy for old people to use the stairs. But nothing was done to resolve my complain. Ditto, the bus driver kept on stopping because he wants to smoke. But overall the tour satisfied my curiosity on this part of the globe.

Britain and Ireland Delight (Summer, 8 Days) Tour

Britain and Ireland Delight (Summer, 8 Days)

We had an awesome experience, made possible by our tour director Damian and driver Dave. Damian’s knowledge was exceptional and Dave was an amazing driver.

Absolute Turkey Tour

Absolute Turkey

Absolutely amazing experience in Turkey with a great selection on the itinerary. Our tour guide Ihsan with brilliant too extremely knowledgeable and approachable. Highlights of the trip being the hot air balloon ride and the day out on a boat in Demre visiting a sunken village. I would highly recommend this trip

Essential Britain & Ireland Tour

Essential Britain & Ireland

Liz Ryan is an excellent guide and knows her history of Britain very well. The bus was very comfortable and even had USB ports for charging. And the free bottles of water, as needed, were greatly appreciated. All hotels were very clean with very good provided breakfasts and only one could have used a bathroom upgrade. All beds we used appeared to be queen size. We really enjoyed the optional live Irish dancing and show and dinner at "Taylors Three Rock" in Dublin. Perhaps information on the VAT tax and the procedures to get that refunded should be provided to guests before and after arrival. The tour we were on is called a 10 day tour but is actually only 8 days on the bus. We were impressed and feel it was well worth the cost!

Tour from Athens to Dubrovnik or Split: 7 Balkan countries in 14 days Tour

Tour from Athens to Dubrovnik or Split: 7 Balkan countries in 14 days

Excellent trips around the Balkans. Personal, adapted to my wants with fewer shops and few patron saints, but more castles, battles and genocide. Eri and Sokol were excellent hosts, careful drivers and I cannot fault them in the slightest. My one reservation was the hotels rooms. They were in the 2* to 3* range. The hotel in Delphi was a disaster. They insulted Eri and of a morning there was no hot water. They insisted I pay direct and complained the booking was from Albania but my passport Australian. (I understand this hotel is no longer on the schedule.) The hotel and room in Kotor were excellent but others small. Great trip and really interesting recent history.

Tour from Athens to Belgrade: 7 Balkan countries in 14 days

Our 4 days tour was more than we imagined. The sights, smells, and history were simply stunning, things I will never forget. You will get the most of the Balkans in four days. I will definitely visit Albania again, it is a hidden gem. Lovely experience

The imperial Europe tour was very well designed and organised, with an excellent selection of super interesting locations, good accommodation, a very comfortable coach, a great driver, and an excellent Tour Director - Dino. We were very satisfied.
