European tour offers boost in prize money, new minimum pay
- Associated Press
The European tour will offer $150,000 against players' earnings and pay $1,500 to other players if they miss the cut as part of a new schedule announced Thursday that boosts prize money and returns to Australia and parts of Asia.
The tour said prize money would be $144.2 million, not including the four majors and the World Golf Championship in Texas.
The four Rolex Series events -- Abu Dhabi, Dubai, the Scottish Open and BMW PGA Championship -- get $1 million increases to $9 million, with the season-ending DP World Tour Championship having a $10 million purse.
The tour also said $6 million from a bonus pool would be distributed among the leading eight players in the DP World Tour rankings at the end of the year.
The changes reflect alliances Europe has established with the PGA Tour and tours in South Africa and Australia amid new competition from Saudi-funded LIV Golf.
Most significant is an "Earnings Assurance Program" that provides $150,000 to full members that count against tournament earnings. It is similar to what the PGA Tour announced for this season, with a few changes.
The U.S. tour is offering $500,000 up front for rookies and players who earned their card back from the Korn Ferry Tour. Everyone else will be paid the difference if they don't earn $500,000 in the season.
The European tour is offering $20,000 at the start of the season for rookies, Challenge Tour graduates and those who make it through qualifying school. Everyone else will get paid the difference if the don't earn $150,000 at the end of the season.
"For us to be able to offer our members record prize funds and enhanced earning opportunities is massive, particularly when global economies are still feeling the effects of the pandemic and with the new challenge of rising inflation significantly putting pressure on costs in all facets of our business," said Keith Pelley, the chief executive of the European tour.
He said the overall prize fund is some $50 million more than two years ago.
The new season begins Nov. 24-27 -- one week after the current season ends -- with consecutive weeks of co-sanctioned events in South Africa and Australia. The Australian PGA Championship is the same week as the Joburg Open, while the Australian Open is the same week as the South African Open.
It will be the first time the Australian Open is co-sanctioned by Europe, while the Australian PGA was on the European schedule from 2015 through 2019. Neither event has been held since 2019 because of the pandemic.
Also new to the European tour -- officially the DP World Tour because of its umbrella sponsorship -- are tournaments in Singapore, Japan, Thailand and Korea.
That puts the 39 tournaments in 26 countries on five continents.
The new year starts with the Hero Cup, patterned after the former Seve Trophy to give European tour members a taste of the Ryder Cup format.
The Italian Open will be May 4-7, significant because it is at Marco Simone outside Rome, which hosts the Ryder Cup at the end of September. It's the same week as the Wells Fargo Championship on the PGA Tour, an elevated event worth $20 million, which would make it difficult for Americans -- along with American-based Europeans -- to play.
Missing from the schedule is a Spanish stop at Valderrama, which is likely to be used by LIV Golf next year.
The European tour also has a three-week break after the British Open, a break Pelley said was sought by players.
Ryder Cup qualifying ends Sept. 3 at the Omega European Masters in Switzerland. After that, players have the Irish Open, BMW PGA Championship, the French Open and then the Ryder Cup.

A star-studded field heads to Royal Porthcawl in Wales for the 36th edition of the senior Major
- Sign up to Golf Monthly Newsletter Newsletter
The 36th edition of The Senior Open takes place at Royal Porthcawl in Wales, the second time it has hosted the Major after it was chosen for the 2017 tournament.
Back then German legend Bernhard Langer claimed his third Senior Open title following a three-shot win over Corey Pavin. Langer has won a fourth title since then, in 2019, and few would bet against him claiming a fifth this week, particularly as he only won the US Senior Open title a matter of weeks ago .
Not only did that hand him his 12th senior Major title, but it also made him the player with the most wins in PGA Tour Champions history with 46, surpassing Hale Irwin.
One player who’ll be hoping to stop Langer will be 2022 champion Darren Clarke. The Northern Irishman beat Padraig Harrington by one shot in the Gleneagles tournament , and he will be hopeful of more success here.
As for Harrington, he'll be expected to challenge strongly. Indeed, the Irishman has been in such excellent form that he’s even been touted as one of Luke Donald’s six captain’s picks for the Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club. Harrington finished second at the Senior PGA Championship in May, and he’ll be hopeful of building on that – and his victory in the 2022 US Senior Open – as he looks for his second senior Major title.
Padraig Harrington will hope to continue his recent good form in the Senior Open
Local hopes will surely rest largely with Stephen Dodd. The Welshman beat Spaniard Miguel Angel Jiminez by one shot two years ago and he’ll be confident of a similarly strong performance in his homeland.
Jiminez plays this year too, as he goes in search of his second Senior Open title after he won the tournament five years ago, while another legendary Spaniard, two-time Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal , is also in the field.

As well as Dodd, another Welshman, 1991 Masters champion Ian Woosnam, will also surely receive plenty of encouragement from the crowd as the 65-year-old aims to roll back the years.
Other previous winners in the field include 2016 champion Paul Broadhurst and 2011 winner Russ Cochran, while there are plenty more big-name players hoping to impress, including former World No.2 Colin Montgomerie and 2018 European Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjorn .
Steven Alker will also fancy his chances. The New Zealander may have only achieved a career high of 120th in the world rankings, but his success in senior Majors is phenomenal. So far, he has top-10 finishes in all but two of the senior Majors he has played, including a win in the Senior PGA Championship in 2022.
Paul Lawrie, who won the 1999 Open, and two-time US Open winner Retief Goosen also play.
Players are competing for a purse of $2.75m, an increase of $250,000 on the 2022 tournament. The winner will receive $447,800.

2024 Zurich Classic purse: Payout info, winner’s share
Luke List and Henrik Norlander are in the hunt at the 2024 Zurich Classic.

The Zurich Classic occupies a unique spot on the PGA Tour schedule. It’s the only team event of the year, and that means there are a couple of specifics that make it different to individual medal play.
While the winning team is still entitled to PGA Tour exemptions and FedEx points, there are no world-ranking point s awarded at this tournament. Prize money is also slightly more complicated, with the winning team sharing the money generally earmarked for first and second place, the second-place team splitting the money for third and fourth place, and so on.
This week, there’s an $8.9 million purse up for grabs, with $1.268 million going to each player on the winning team. The drop-off to second is pretty steep, with $525,100 for each player on the runner-up team. (Compare that to last week’s Signature Event purse in Hilton Head , where every player in the top 10 make $541,000 or more.)
To clear six figures in New Orleans this week, players will have to finish in the top 11.
Below, you can check out the complete payout breakdown for this week’s Zurich Classic played at TPC Louisiana.

Here’s the prize money payout for each golfer at the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans
Tracy Wilcox
It was team time on the PGA Tour, where, after two weeks of the top stars playing against each other in massive events, there was a brief respite for a week to play in a different format for four days in a much more relaxed atmosphere. Not that they weren’t attempting to bring home the hardware at the Zurich Classic, but the previous two weeks were spent grinding at a major championship and a signature event.
At TPC Louisiana, however, there were some bigger names in the field than usual, with five of the top 15 players in the world in action. Two of those bigger names—Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry—ultimately won, defeating Martin Trainer and Chad Ramey on the first hole of a playoff. The Irishmen shot a final-round 68 in the Sunday alternate-shot format to end at 25-under-par total. They each took home $1.286 million from the overall purse of $8.9 million.

Dustin johnson, patrick reed lead liv golf's list of top prize money earners in its debut regular season, share this article.
DORAL, Fla. — With $4 million going to the winner and $120,000 going to last place at each event, players were bound to make a ridiculous amount of money in LIV Golf’s first year. And they did.
Of the 68 players to tee it up on the upstart circuit led by Greg Norman and backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, a whopping 48 players made more than $1 million, with 15 making more than $4 million, including Pat Perez, who earned $961,000 for his individual performances and $3,062,500 for team bonuses. Dustin Johnson, LIV’s inaugural regular-season champion and the captain of Perez and the 4Aces, blew away the field thanks to $10,575,267 in individual earnings for a $13,637,767 total.
This week, LIV Golf will host its team championship event at Trump National Doral in Miami , where teams will make at minimum $1 million ($250,000 per player). If a team advances to the semifinals, they’ll earn $3 million ($750,000 per player), with $4 million going to fourth place ($1 million per player), $6 million to third ($1.5 million per player), $8 million to the runner up ($2 million per player) and $16 million to the winners ($4 million per player).
Here’s how much money each player earned on the course in LIV Golf’s first regular season.
1 Dustin Johnson - $13,637,767
DJ was LIV Golf’s inaugural season-long individual champion, claiming the $18 million bonus prize before the final regular season event in Saudi Arabia.
The 38-year-old made a total of $13,637,767 over seven events, $10,575,267 for his individual efforts and another $3,062,500 thanks to the performances of his stacked 4Aces team, who won four straight team titles midway through the season.

2 Patrick Reed - $8,210,714
Reed played in one less event than most at the top of this list but cashed in with Johnson and the 4Aces, earning $3,062,500 in team money and $5,148,214 as an individual to jump into second with $8,210,714. The 32-year-old was third in Portland, fifth in Bedminster and second in Bangkok.

3 Branden Grace - $7,634,666
Grace made his big money early, finishing third in LIV’s opener in London before winning the second event in Portland. Since then, his finishes have been a lackluster 13-12-18-WD-28 (remember, 48-player fields), but that was still enough to bank $6,509,666 individually and $1,125,000 with his team for a total of $7,634,666.
His total earnings on Tour since turning pro in 2007, you ask? $12,299,597.

4 Peter Uihlein - $7,314,786
Uihlein, who never won on the PGA Tour, has found his footing against the smaller fields on LIV, where he finished runner-up in two of the last three events, as well as fourth at the opener in London. Despite two finishes in the 40s (once again, 48-player fields), that’s still good enough for $7,314,786 ($5,814,786 as an individual and $1,500,000 in team bonuses).

5 Charl Schwartzel - $7,135,000
Speaking of people who won early, Charl Schwartzel was LIV’s first winner in London and went on to bank a total of $7,135,000 thanks to three top-10 finishes in the final three regular-season events.

6 Brooks Koepka - $6,776,100
Koepka took down Uihlein in a playoff at the regular-season finale in Saudi Arabia to put the cap on his $6,776,100 season. His only other top-10 finish came in Bangkok the week prior.

7 Talor Gooch - $6,374,500
Gooch was just about even with his earnings from the 4Aces team wins ($3,062,500) and his own individual performances ($3,312,000), earning a total of $6,374,500. The 30-year-old made $9,536,506 on the PGA Tour before making the move this summer.

8 Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra - $6,182,000
Lopez-Chacarra went straight from college to LIV and has made the most of his six starts, earning $4,807,000 on his own thanks to a three-shot win in Bangkok as well as $1,375,000 in team bonuses to come in at $6,182,000 in his first year as a professional.

9 Carlos Ortiz - $5,385,314
Another player who struggled for the majority of the season, Ortiz bagged a runner-up finish in Portland and finished fourth in Bedminster to earn $4,010,314 as an individual and $1,375,000 with his team to finish the season at $5,385,314. His next best finishes? A pair of T-18s to close out the year.

10 Sergio Garcia - $5,378,786
After struggling to finishes of 24th and 26th in the first to events, Garcia found some form over the last five where he finished inside the top 10 four times with a pair of top-4 finishes. That bagged the Spaniard a total of $5,378,786 to just squeak into the top 10 for the season.
