The best fall foliage cruises in the U.S.

From dedicated voyages to afternoons on the water, the best fall foliage cruises in America offer up a delightful way to peep the changing leaves

Lauren Dana

Fall is here, which means apple-picking opportunities abound, pumpkin spice lattes are officially back in season and wrapping yourself in a scarf large enough to double as a blanket is acceptable. But perhaps the best part of the season is the vibrant foliage that comes with it. All across the country, leaves transform color (think burnt reds, rusty oranges, brilliant coppers and bright yellows). The best way to experience the changing of the seasons is from out on the water, offering expansive views of the fall hues plus the surrounding landscapes, be it tree-lined mountains, valleys, or stunning stretches of coast. Short hours-long sailings in major cities like Boston and New York to longer 12-day voyages that cross into Canada, here are the best fall foliage cruises to book this season.

Seabourn’s 12-Day Canada & New England Fall Foliage

1.  Seabourn’s 12-Day Canada & New England Fall Foliage

Sailing from New York, New York to Montreal, Quebec, 12-Day Canada & New England Fall Foliage itinerary features three U.S. ports of call in Newport, RI (with its quaint tree-lined downtown and Gilded Age mansions that are made all the more charming come autumn), Boston, MA (where history buffs can tour important landmarks while leaf-peeping); and Bar Harbor; ME (where travelers can explore the expansive Arcadia National Park, which teems with fiery foliage each fall). Then, it’s off to Canada with an overnight in Halifax, Nova Scotia, followed by stops in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; Saguenay, Quebec; Quebec City, Quebec; and Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, before disembarking in magnificent Montreal. Bonus: In between Saguenay and Quebec City, passengers will enjoy scenic cruising through the Saguenay Fjord National Park, where they can spot wildlife like whales, seals, wolves and bears while admiring the changing colors of the towering trees.

Lindblad Expeditions’ Columbia and Snake Rivers Journey

2.  Lindblad Expeditions’ Columbia and Snake Rivers Journey

Experience the best of the Pacific Northwest—and its ample leaf-peeping opps—aboard Lindblad Expeditions’ Columbia and Snake Rivers Journey. History lovers and adventure enthusiasts alike will appreciate this bucket-list cruise, which features an onboard historian, geologist and team of naturalists. Admire Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams, both of which are flooded with vibrant foliage come September and October, right from the bow of the ship. The spectacular ports of call—Astoria, OR (where travelers can savor local beers and oysters while catching a glimpse of the awe-inspiring Cape Disappointment); Walla Walla, WA (where wine tasting opps abound and harvest season is in full swing ); and Clarkston, WA (where you can admire Hells Canyon, North America’s deepest river gorge)—are best explored on foot, kayak, Zodiac or jet boat. The itinerary also includes scenic cruising through the Hood River, Columbia River Gorge and the Palouse River.

3.  Charles Riverboat Company’s Fall Foliage Cruises

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Charles Riverboat Company (@charlesriverboatcompany)

Searching for some of the best fall activities in Boston ? Head out on the water and set sail on a 90-minute ride with the Charles Riverboat Company along the Charles River. These foliage-themed cruises offer some of Boston and Cambridge's best (read: most Instagrammable) views. With tickets from $30 per adult, this short but scenic sailing is the most wallet-friendly option on our list. And, since it’s just an hour and a half long, you’ll be back long before dinnertime (may we suggest booking a table at one of Boston’s best new restaurants to cap off the fun-filled day?). This cruise is an excellent option for those tight on time but still craving some fall fun—all without having to leave the city.

Royal Caribbean’s 10-Night Fall Foliage Northbound Cruise

4.  Royal Caribbean’s 10-Night Fall Foliage Northbound Cruise

For a fun-filled fall foliage cruise for the entire family, look no further than this 10-night sailing from Royal Caribbean. The 10-night voyage sails from Cape Liberty, NJ, to Quebec City, Quebec, aboard Jewel of the Seas, offering a rock climbing wall, mini-golf, several pools, state-of-the-art entertainment and many bars and restaurants. Off the ship, explore stunning ports of call like Boston (MA) and Portland (ME) before heading off to some of the most awe-inspiring locales in Canada (Saint John, New Brunswick; Sydney, Nova Scotia; Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; and Saguaney, Quebec). These destinations feature some of North America's best fall foliage views, thanks to their vast landscapes. While on board, sit back, relax, and take in the breathtaking scenery from the comfort of your stateroom balcony.

Oceania Cruises’ Autumn in Canada & New England

5.  Oceania Cruises’ Autumn in Canada & New England

Oceania Cruises’ aptly named Autumn in Canada & New England itinerary is perfect for passengers eager to catch a glimpse of the region’s changing leaves over the course of 11 days. Upon embarkation from New York, you’ll travel to Newport before cruising the Cape Cod Canal. After, the ship makes its way to Portland, where cruisers can tour Bar Harbor & Acadia National Park. Then it’s off to Canada to visit New Brunswick (Saint John) Nova Scotia (Shelbourne and Sydney, where, in the later, cruisers can take a shore excursion to Cape Breton Island to admire some of North America’s most vibrant foliage coupled with sweeping ocean vistas). The trip's final leg includes Newfoundland (Corner Brook, which features orange, yellow, and bright red-hued leaves in peak season) and Quebec (Saguenay and Quebec City).

City Experiences’ New York Fall Foliage Lunch Cruise

6.  City Experiences’ New York Fall Foliage Lunch Cruise

City Experiences’ New York Fall Foliage Lunch Cruise is among the best fall day trips from New York City . The three-hour cruise, which takes place on October 21, 2023, sails roundtrip from Manhattan’s Chelsea Piers and cruises up the Hudson River. Along the scenic route, passengers can sip cider and savor pumpkin pie while surrounded by seasonal décor, adding to the festive fall vibes. For the best leaf-peeping views, head up to the open-air rooftop lounge— and prepare to be dazzled by the kaleidoscope of autumnal hues. Additional onboard highlights include a buffet lunch, live DJ entertainment and a selection of creative cocktails (additional cost). Oh, and did we mention tickets start at under $100 apiece?

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Canada & New England: Newport & Portland

7.  Norwegian Cruise Line’s Canada & New England: Newport & Portland

Embark on a fantastic foliage-filled journey through New England and Canada aboard this epic itinerary from Norwegian Cruise Line. The seven-day voyage—which has fares as low as $429 per person—conveniently sails roundtrip from New York aboard the family-friendly Norwegian Escape, stopping in three other American ports (Newport, Portland and Bar Harbor). From there, the ship sails to Canada (Saint John and Halifax) before returning to The Big Apple. Throughout the weeklong sailing, passengers will have the incredible opportunity to admire the colorful leaves while heading out on bucket-list-worthy excursions like whale-watching and hiking; otherwise, consider more laid-back albeit equally fun activities like shopping or attending an authentic New England lobster bake.

8.  Circle Line’s Hudson River Fall Foliage Cruise

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Circle Line Sightseeing (@circlelinenyc)

Circle Line’s Hudson River Fall Foliage Cruise is one of the best things to do in NYC this fall . The four-hour cruise—which Circle Line dubbed “New York's floating Oktoberfest”—sails 40 miles up the Hudson River. For the sailing, passengers can enjoy live music and Oktoberfest-themed food like Bavarian pretzels, bratwursts, and pork schnitzel while sipping on German brews. Take in the Instagram-worthy foliage—and breathe in the crisp fall air—from one of the expansive outdoor decks. Cruisers may even spot a bald eagle amongst the colorful trees and mountain landscapes if they're lucky.

Crystal’s New York to Quebec City

9.  Crystal’s New York to Quebec City

Enjoy a New York to Quebec City sailing with luxury cruise line Crystal, which recently relaunched just a few months earlier. This specific eight-night voyage takes place onboard the revamped Crystal Serenity , which calls on Newport, Boston, Halifax (where it will stay overnight), Sydney and Quebec City (where it will also remain overnight before disembarking the following day), In between the Sydney and Quebec City port stops, Serenity will cruise along the tree-lined St. Lawrence River, where the turning of the leaves will be on full display. While the ports of call alone are reason enough to book this voyage, you should also consider that all staterooms have ocean views. Other ship amenities include a fine-dining restaurant helmed by Nobu (yes, that Nobu), a tranquil spa and chic common areas where cruisers can leaf-peep and sip cocktails in style.

10.  Classic Harbor Line’s Fall Foliage Brunch Cruise

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Classic Harbor Line (@classicharborline)

New Yorkers looking for a romantic way to experience the surrounding region’s fall foliage can —and certainly should! —book the Classic Harbor Line Fall Foliage Brunch Cruise. The two-and-a-half-hour sailing takes place aboard an elegant ‘20s-style yacht (either one of two aptly named vessels, the Manhattan or Manhattan II ), making it one of the most glamorous ways to go leaf-peeping. As part of the ticket price, cruisers will enjoy a three-course prix fixe brunch—served at their own private table—and, as a bonus, one complimentary Bloody Mary, mimosa, beer, wine or glass of bubbly. (Cheers!) Lastly, while indoor and outdoor seating is available, keep in mind that it is assigned.

Fall’s the Season For Driving New Jersey’s Scenic Byways and Back Roads Login or Register to save this to your Favorites.

Discover vibrant fall foliage, intriguing history and delightful treasures as you cruise along three of New Jersey’s Scenic Byways, two of which have also been awarded the federal designation. These three drives showcase the state’s cultural contributions, rich heritage and natural beauty—plus, they offer ideal landscapes for prime leaf peeping! Plan to stop along the way to fuel your energy and imagination, or make your fall foliage tour a romantic weekend getaway with a  B&B stay . New Jersey’s foliage usually peaks in mid to late October, but get the latest conditions at  The Foliage Network .

FALL FOLIAGE DRIVE #1: DELAWARE RIVER SCENIC BYWAY (32.8 MILES)

Meander along the Delaware River from Trenton north to Frenchtown on one of New Jersey’s two National Scenic Byways. You’ll pass by historic sites, recreational areas, farms and one of the  largest flea markets  on the East Coast. Of course, fall foliage reflecting on the Delaware River is the key attraction as you cruise through the historic towns of Titusville, Lambertville, Stockton and Raven Rock, ending in Frenchtown. Much of the way, you’ll parallel the historic  Delaware and Raritan Canal . Stop at  Washington Crossing Park  to see where George Washington made his famous foray that changed the American Revolution. Explore galleries and antique shops in  Lambertville and pass Stockton’s historic  Prallsville Mills . Cross the walking bridge over the Delaware at  Bull’s Island Recreational Area  for perfect photo ops. Last stop:  Frenchtown , a charming town for walking, dining and exploring boutiques. See  map link .

FALL FOLIAGE DRIVE #2: MILLSTONE VALLEY SCENIC BYWAY (27.5 MILES)

This National Scenic Byway also lets you time-travel to Revolutionary War times and America’s canal era. It loops the Millstone River from Kingston to Millstone borough. Here you’ll see another part of the  Delaware and Raritan Canal  system that crosses through the center of the state and is ideal for walking, biking, kayaking and birding. And, yes, George Washington definitely slept here—and among the houses built in the 1700s that you’ll drive by is the beautifully restored  Rockingham , General Washington’s last wartime headquarters. As you head north to Millstone, take detours to enjoy fall foliage as you stroll through  Colonial Park & Garden  or learn about environmental stewardship at  Duke Farms . You’ll find dining options as you drive through hamlets or explore nearby  Princeton's  dining and shopping options. As this drive takes you on several roads, access the byways  map  created by the New Jersey Department of Transportation. See  map link .

FALL FOLIAGE DRIVE #3: PALISADES SCENIC BYWAY (NJ SECTION, 13 MILES)

A palisade is defined as “a line of bold cliffs.” And nowhere will you see a bolder, better view than from New Jersey’s section of  Palisades Interstate Park , a National Historic Landmark. The Palisades Scenic Byway includes 10 miles along the Palisades Interstate Parkway and another 8.5 miles on Henry Hudson Drive. Fall Foliage Brunch Cruise

Stop right here - don’t go! The website is misleading - it states this cruise goes up the Hudson all the way to West Point. It does not – we turned around just after the Tappan Zee Bridge. Our party and other passengers were so disappointed. The website clearly states the turnaround point at West Point, and the tour guide at the beginning of the cruise highlighted that we would be going under four bridges, including the Bear Mountain Bridge, turning around at West Point. We never got to the Bear Mountain Bridge, and of course did not get to West Point. Their own website states how magnificent West Point is – too bad we never got to see it. When I saw the boat turning around, I asked the guide why and she said she didn’t know. We never got any information for the rest of the trip about why it turned around early. When we got back to the port I asked another person who I thought was an official on the ferry, and he gave the reason as being we were short on time. Seriously? The website says an approximate return time of 4 PM, we were back at 3:30. The sound quality on the ship was terrible – we hardly could hear what the guide was saying, through no fault of her own. When several passenger stated they couldn’t hear the guide, one of the officials on the ship said they were aware of the problem but hadn’t yet fixed it. so unless you were standing within feet of the guide, you really didn’t hear the narration and had to figure things out for yourself where you are. Let’s just say having Google maps up and running on my phone was very helpful. We have contacted customer service to express our extreme dissatisfaction four times – we’ve yet to get a call back even acknowledging our complaint. do yourself a favor – spend $119 per person on a nice restaurant in the West Point area. You’ll get the beautiful view and decent food without the disappointments and empty promises of the Sea Streak ferry.

We were a group of seven and went on the Fall Foliage cruise on a beautiful Sunday. We took the 7:30 ferry from Rockaway and arrived at Pier 11 at 8:30. There was a table set up to get your pre-ordered, pre-paid tickets for Seastreak. There was a bit of a wait to board, and ppl were already onboard from Jersey so most of the good seats were taken. The seating on the boat was similar to seating on a plane, and we sat in the middle rows. There were a few seats with tables near the windows and almost of the seats had the pull down tray in front if you wanted to use it to eat. You can bring your own breakfast, as some ppl did or there was coffee, bagels and croissants, drinks and hot dogs sold at the snack bar. There were only a few seats outside, but it is a long ride to sit outside the whole time. We left our seat a few times to go outside. It did get stuffy inside, so it felt good to go outside and get some fresh air. The window were large but dirty. There were only three bathrooms so there was usually a wait and they did get quite dirty. Our tour guide was informative, told us about landmarks and a little history. West Point was impressive. The acoustics were bad and it was hard to understand him though out the ride. I saw him talking to a few ppl and he would gladly answer any questions. We arrived at Cold Springs on time and were told to be back at dock at 2:45, which was early since the boat departed at 3:30. We had googled restaurants and made reservations ahead of time. There was enough time to eat, walk around the quaint town and wait on line for ice-cream. There were many ppl ahead us waiting to board, so again we sat in the middle rows. We arrived back at Pier 11 on time. The crew was not friendly, but did their job. The AC unit began dripping over my head, but I just moved my seat. It was an enjoyable day with good friends. I would recommend to arrive early and grab the better seats.

I decided to give 2 stars just for the tour guide who was the only good thing Bout seastreak fall foliage cruise to Cold Spring. 1. Asked to add on a passenger a day before, was told it was fully booked. On the day of, more than half seats were available upon arrival. 2. Going and returning, air condition was on full blast even though it was a cold rainy day. Did not keep the temperature comfortable even after requesting a few times. Not advisable if traveling with elderly or infants/toddlers. 3. Water leaked upon our seat from a.c. unit above and from a corner near stairs where we stood. In stead of taking care of the matter/cleaning, was told it's ok. 4. For the rate charged per person, not even one free beverage offered on board (3.5/4hrs each way). All items for purchase only. Overall NOT RECOMMENDED. Wish I knew of these conditions before buying 10 tickets... I would not have put my family through this horrible experience...

I was on the Cold Springs outing earlier this week. I have the following things to say about the trip. - The "guided tour" was a joke. The dude was rambling and not very interesting; in addition, the PA system on the top floor of the boat was broken/distorted, making every time he spoke a chore/annoyance rather than an welcome intrusion. Plus he didn't give any fresh insights into anything (when I could actually make out what he was saying). - The 1st and 2nd floors (inside) were stuffy and uncomfortable, so my two friends and I wound up staying on the top deck the whole time. - The exhaust system on the top deck on the way back was extremely loud and was blowing hot air everywhere. Not sure why it only kicked in on the return trip, but it was really unpleasant. - The bathrooms were horrifyingly disgusting. I noticed that by the end of the trip, all those seated anywhere nearby were spraying perfume, holding their noses, etc. It's pretty clear to me that they are using commuter boats meant for shorter outings for these excursions. I can definitely understand paying about $40 for the round trip to Cold Spring, but there was nothing about the experience that warranted the $85 charge. I sent the above to Seastreak LLC, and got no response... hey Seastreak, I want my $$$ back!!

We took the The Fall Foliage cruise yesterday which cost $85 per person, picked up at the Highlands, ended at Cold Springs, and did not include any food. There was food for purchase and a bar. Upon boarding at 9am I asked for a coffee, bagel and cream cheese and was told they were already out of cream cheese. I chose a seat and realized the windows were all filthy. The whole idea of this cruise is to see the scenery and the windows are filthy? The lines for the bathroom were approximately 20 minutes long and they too were filthy and smelled horrible. The tour guide narrating was informative and interesting but spoke non stop, even when he had nothing to say. I could hear others on the boat saying "is this guy every gonna stop talking for a minute". But worse was his obsession with the "poop" in the water. It was unfortunate enough that the leaves had not yet turned color, but I would at least like to enjoy a nice ride on the Hudson River looking at the tree line, the NY skyline, and watching the sun glistening on the water, without this guy repeatedly talking about the "poop" in the water. "As recently as the 70's and 80's we were dumping raw sewage in this water". This kind of talk was a recurring theme throughout the entire ride. He was aware of this because he himself would say "ok, enough about waste in the water", but then would go right back to it 20 minutes later. When we got to Cold Springs, we could only find 6 restaurants and they all had a 1-2 hr wait. This was disappointing as we were told that there were 21 restaurants to chose from. We finally found someplace to eat but felt misinformed about our opportunities. Between the unpleasant boat ride and food limitations in town, the overall experience was very disappointing and not worth the money. If not for the company of our friends, this would have been a miserable day.

Took this fall foliage cruise from Highlands, NJ to Cold Spring NY and back yesterday, with three other couples (picked them up at Wall St, NYC). Boat was on time, no problems with timing, cleanliness, etc. of the boat. The bar/snack bar on the boat was fine. Unfortunately, the boat had only three restrooms (all unisex, thankfully), for over 200 people. There was always a line (10, sometimes 20 people long) to use them. Also, not enough seats on the upper open deck to accommodate all those who wanted to stay there for any period of time. The town of Cold Spring was neat, with plenty of places to explore and eat. The tour guide was terrible. Basically, he mentioned the names of several points of interest, and maybe two or three towns we past, with no explanation of the history or a story associated with it. All along the coast of Manhattan, there were plenty of interesting buildings, and sights, with nothing from him. Then, he pointed out the exact same ones both ways, with exactly the same comments (basically the name of it, but no history, etc. to make it interesting). Then, he asked for a tip at the end of the cruise? Also, we took the 8 AM cruise. There was another boat (same size) following right after, at 9 AM. Fortunately, we choose to eat as soon as we got to Cold Spring. Many did some exploring and shopping for an hour or more, then tried to eat. Those people told us on the boat afterwards, that all the restaurants were full, with 20 to 30 minute waits to get in, then 20 to 30 minutes to be served, because the second boat load of people arrived an hour later, and the crowds at the eateries were a mob scene. They should have recommended to us, before we departed the boat at Cold Spring to eat first, then explore, so no one would run into that problem. A major omission on their part.

If you go to Boston, the North End is a Little Italy of pasta, pastries and cafes.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO See New England Like a Local

Autumn is one of the best times to visit New England, with comfortable temperatures, crisp air and colorful fall foliage. Most New England cruises start, stop or finish in Canada, so make sure you have both Canadian and U.S. currency on hand. Depending on the season during your New England cruise, you'll need different clothes and footwear. Make sure to pack comfortable walking shoes as many New England ports are best experienced on foot. Packing layers is a good idea when visiting the region too. In the summer months, the weather can cool down at night so it's always best to have a sweater or light jacket on hand!

When visiting Boston, the easiest way to get around is by the subway or "the T" as the locals call it.

FRESH, FRIED AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN

Take advantage of New England's coastal locales by diving into some lobster rolls, oysters and clam chowder. Once you've had your fill of raw delicacies, indulge in the many fried options that the area has to offer, from donuts and cannolis to plentiful French fries.

Traditional Italian Cannoli from a Boston Pastry

Holy Cannoli

Once you've made it to Boston, you must try the delicious chocolate chip cookies at Chipyard located in Faneuil Hall. Another must-try are the cannolis at Modern Pastry in the North End, but be prepared to wait — these are not Boston's best-kept secret.

Fresh Oysters on a Plate

A Shucking Fun Time

Fresh fish and seafood is plentiful in Maine, especially in Portland. Head to The Shop, a raw bar and shellfish shop. The oysters are hand-picked daily — only the best for their customers!
