Three things with Felicity Ward: ‘We dressed up, learnt a lip-sync, and performed it for our parents’
In our weekly interview about objects, the comedian recounts her childhood antics imitating Prince, and her adolescence as a Weezer fan

Y ou may know Felicity Ward from her appearances on TV programs like Spicks and Specks, or one of her many comedy stage shows. Admittedly, however, it’s been a while since Ward got behind the mic in her homeland. The last few years have been full on for the longtime comedian: she had a baby, bought a house and navigated the pandemic while living in the UK.
But this month Ward will make her return to Australian stages. She’s bringing her new show, fittingly titled She’s Back Baby, to the Sydney Comedy Store on 1 July before heading on to Hobart on 6 July and Melbourne on 9 July .
While she now lives in London, Ward grew up in the small town of Killcare on the New South Wales Central Coast. As a teen, she spent her weekends getting the train to music gigs in Sydney and asking the bands to sign a beloved pair of jeans. Decades later, she still has that collection of autographs and now counts it as one of her most prized possessions. Here, Ward tells us about that treasured teenage memento, as well as the story of two other important personal belongings.
What I’d save from my house in a fire
As a teenager, I was the singer in an all-girl grunge band. (If you weren’t in a band with a female bass player, were you even in the 90s?) I lived for live music and spent all the money I had – very little, think babysitting for $3 an hour – on catching the train to Sydney from the Central Coast and seeing my favourite bands and artists play free in store shows or all-ages gigs.
I had this pair of jeans which were too small to wear. I have no idea how – I was like a size minus 50 back then. So I used to take them to gigs to get them signed. They have autographs from Sidewinder and Even – and Custard, whose lead singer now voices Bluey’s dad.
But my prize autograph was from Weezer . I remember lining up, waiting to get their signatures, trying to think of something very cool and original that would make them think, “Hey, this girl is a unicorn. If this is how she thinks, I wonder if she can play and write music? Let’s see if she wants to hang out then maybe … join our band?” Instead I choked and said “Are you enjoying the weather?” Thirty-ish years later and I still blush at the thought.
My most useful object
If I like something I become evangelical about it. You will hear about it, with or against your will.
I have this wireless Bluetooth keyboard, which I know many people have. But mine has a little holder to put your iPad or phone in. It’s not a good or known brand. And every person under 40 probably has one, but I can really impress a group of Gen Xers when I bring out that bad boy.
The item I most regret losing
This one is even worse because it wasn’t mine to lose. In 1991, family friends from our town had an NYE party. There were about five different families. About 10 adults and shitloads of kids. These people were very rich compared to us. They even had a basement that had been converted into a Star Wars Lego room. Sure, the concrete probably had asbestos in it, but it was top-of-the-line asbestos.
We decided that we should all dress up, learn a lip-sync to a song, then perform it for our unwitting parents. It was about 9pm when we demanded their attention, so the parents weren’t nearly as hammered as they were going to – or needed to – be.
None of us really knew what we were singing about but we liked the song and the music video. It was Cream by Prince and the New Power Generation. I played Prince. We copied everything they did in the video – rubbing, groping each other, dry rooting the ground. I suppose we thought it was just some wholesome choreography?
Anyway, they taped it on VHS. It should be here that I tell you the YouTube link to it. Alas, they lent the video to me 10 years ago when I was living in Melbourne. Then I was moving to London so I sent it back to them. I’d literally never had any trouble with Australia Post – but of course it went missing and it has been missing ever since. I’m so sad that deep humiliation is gone.

Felicity Ward Q&A
Felicity Ward
‘famous last words’ with comedian felicity ward….
Following a sell-out and critically acclaimed run in Edinburgh, one of the Fringe’s, and now the UK’s, fastest-growing comedians, Felicity Ward, embarks on her first ever UK tour this autumn with her 50% More Likely To Die show.
Off the back of her highly successful Australian documentary Felicity’s Mental Mission (ABC1/ABC2) about mental illness and irritable bowel syndrome, Felicity delves into the depths of her depression, anxiety and IBS. A follow-on from last year’s total sell-out five star show What If There Is No Toilet? (it was the third-best reviewed show at the Fringe last year!), which recently won the New Zealand Comedy Festival Best International Show, Felicity has proven herself to be… well, neurotic, eccentric and disturbed… but also one of the funniest and finest comics around.
These are her ‘Famous Last Words’…
Last thing you did that made you feel good? Ten pin bowling.
Last thing you’d want to be doing right now? (Please don’t say this questionnaire) You stole my answer.
“I’m not a monster”
Last supper… What are you ordering? Burger. Man I want to be a vegetarian but I could not give up burgers. Maybe I could be a burgertarian.
Last person you’d want to share a drink with? Donald Trump – his pursed lips, so alarming. Oh yeah, and the racism, sexism, homophobia and lies are a little off putting too.
Last time you shed a tear and why? Listening to the podcast ‘This American Life’. They had a story about a Japanese man who lost his family in the tsunami. So he built a phone booth and put it on a hill so he could talk to them (Japan is mostly Buddhist). Then other people heard about it and started coming to talk to their lost loved ones. Then they started recording the conversations. Why did I cry at that? Because I’m not a monster.
Last refuge… where would you go? The beach. May as well have a dip and get a tan as you go down swinging, right?
Last the course… tips on loot, love & life? Loot: Try not to steal if you can help it. Love: it’s heaps good, if even of yourself. Life: I’ll tell you when I finish the last level.
Last but one… random question: Tell us about something that interests you that nobody else knows about. Like Gaelic football… or porcelain. I was a singer/songwriter decades before I was a stand up comedian. So I still play guitar and belt out tunes in my loungeroom. I try not to tell/show many people.
Your Famous Last Words? Thank god I died here and not on stage.

Why travel to Moscow
Contrasts: 12th century monasteries and some of the tallest skyscrapers in Europe can be found side-by-side in this complex and captivating city. The diversity of this mega-city is astounding. Only a few steps away from the solemn red facade of the Kremlin and the sounds of righteous church bells, a buzzing night scene and alternative-fashion boutiques can be found.
Culture: In Moscow only the best goes. Be it a theatre, restaurant or gallery, the standards are certain to be world-class. The Bolshoi ballet company is reputed to be even better than the Mariinsky’s and “MMOMA” (Moscow’s museum of modern art) exhibits works of art as profound as any that could be found in the famed MOMA.
Convenience: Unlike the rest of Russia, it’s easy enough to get by with just English in Moscow and, driving excepted, it is surprisingly safe: the murder rate is lower than in some of America’s major cities.

Why visit Moscow
It would take more than two days to walk around the perimeter of the biggest city in Europe, Moscow. Many of its inhabitants barely know what’s beyond the few blocks around their flat and there are so many attractions that it’s almost impossible to know where to start. If there is such a thing as an antidote to boredom, Moscow City is it. The mind-boggling range and diversity of things to do, places to eat, parks, historical monuments and more means that a vacation in Moscow has a wealth of activities to offer for every type of traveler, from young families to retirees.
Reasons to Vacation in Moscow in 2022
The Bolshoi theatre is familiar to almost everyone as Russia’s grandest theatre, but what people don’t know is that there are many more bolshoi (big) sites in Moscow that are worth travelling all the way to Moscow to see. For more than 100 years, the world’s biggest bell has been hidden behind the Kremlin’s walls and inside Moscow’s main park (which is bigger than some countries!) there is the world’s largest outdoor ice-rink. Travelers that visit Moscow can stay at the Izmailovo, Europe’s biggest hotel, then eat at the largest and most historic McDonald’s in Europe and after that have fun at the largest European indoor theme park!
Ancient Past & Stunning Architecture:
As those who travel to Moscow will see, just because Moscow is a city of record-breaking, glitzy high-rises doesn’t mean that there is no history. On the famous Arbat street, time-worn, wooden storehouses and century-old churches are squashed up against grey, soviet blocks which are then towered over by 21st century office-blocks. Unlike its much younger sibling, St Petersburg, Moscow’s roots stretch way back to the 12th century. Within the walls of the Kremlin, the city’s oldest building the Cathedral of Assumption can be admired in all its 500+ years of age.
Culture & Convenience
For a foreigner who has never visited Russia, Moscow is the perfect stepping stone into this great land of mystery. From the country’s best classical ballet troupes to snow-white troikas trotting through the parks, all the highlights of Russian culture can be had in Moscow without any of the complications that would be expected in other, less developed regions of Russia.
Cheap as Caviar
In Moscow, everything is bargain when with the current foreign exchange rates being what they are. Even caviar doesn’t seem so dear when the exchange rate is at 60rub to the dollar, so go on indulge yourself! Take your 2022 vacation in Moscow and have the best of both worlds, with European luxury at very affordable prices.
Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.
Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.
We had a great time both in Moscow and St Petersburg. Your travel agency was excellent in coordinating the whole trip. Everything worked like clockwork. The guides assigned to us were very nice and friendly. They had a great knowledge of their subjects. The cars and the drivers were great. The hotels were good and the itinerary was good. All in all, it was a wonderful experience. It was nice dealing with you and your company. Thank you very much for a great Russian experience. Have a great future ahead
