Field Trip in Toronto, ON – Review
Field Trip Arts and Music Festival July 9, 2022 Toronto, ON
The Field Trip Arts and Music Festival took place on Saturday, July 9th, at Fort York and it was a great day for live music. The diverse lineup served to unify indie music lovers of all different ages and backgrounds who together formed an extraordinary loving crowd of people. The event was crafted so that kids propped up on their parents’ shoulders with jumbo headphones could enjoy the sets comfortably just as much as the teenagers who collided into one another during those entrancing moments of really feeling the music. From young couples laying under the shade of trees in the grass, to the groups of friends who danced under raining confetti, Field Trip was a festival made for everyone.
Many of the beginning acts have recently released debut albums under Arts & Crafts Productions, the independent record label founded by Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene), who is also owed responsibility for putting on the festival.
The first of these artists supported by Arts & Crafts are OMBIIGIZI , a Canadian indie rock music project who kicked off the festival at the Fort York Stage. They played through songs from their debut album Sewn Back Together , which was released earlier this year.
Starting off the day at the Garrison stage was Georgia Harmer , the Canadian alt/ indie singer-songwriter who is celebrating the release of her debut album Stay In Touch .
Back at the Fort York Stage, American indie pop band Daisy the Great made the most of their long journey to the north with a fun-loving set.
Pierre Kwenders is a Congolese-Canadian musician who showed us a different side of the indie music scene with his unique and complex sound. Kwenders redefines the role of language in lyricism, and his artistic innovations have been appreciated worldwide.
Haviah Mighty is a rapper from Brampton, Ontario, who rose to fame in 2016 as a member of the hip-hop group Sorority. Today, she’s released several EPs independently and, in 2019, won the Polaris Music Prize.
The Rural Alberta Advantage is an indie rock band established in Toronto in 2005 and consists of members Nils Edenloff (vocals and guitar), Amy Cole (keyboard, bass, and backing vocals), and Paul Banwatt (drums). Their set served to de-stress those who lazed in the sun and loosened up festival go-ers who were still arriving on festival grounds.
Formed in Etobicoke in the late 1970s and having disbanded in 2007, it was certainly a treat to have the Rheostatics on the stage at Field Trip. Thankfully for fans, since their reforming in 2016 and new album release, more shows have been cropping up across the province. They’re next due to perform at Elora Riverfest in August.
Lucy Dacus , an American indie folk artist from Richmond, Virginia, captivated listeners with her debut album, No Burden .
Busty and the Bass is an incredibly invigorating electro-soul and hip-hop group from Montreal. The cross-pollination of musical abilities of all of the band’s members created a tremendously replayable performance you couldn’t take your eyes off of.
We were lucky to have American singer-songwriter , Kurt Vile, performing again in Toronto. The indie-folk rock artist was arresting in his performance, leaving us all yearning for more. Kurt Vile is one charming man with a guitar; you just want to listen to him sing under the sun all day long.
Valley is an indie pop band formed in Toronto in 2014 and in 2020, received the Juno award for Breakthrough Group of the Year. If their recorded music wasn’t exciting enough, their live set was mind-blowing. Valley is a remarkably dynamic and talented group of musicians and would urge those seeking wonderful music played live to catch one of their shows.
The sun set over Peach Pit during the most highly anticipated show of the day. Peach Pit is an indie rock band from Vancouver, BC, whose surfy guitar-driven melodies are met with a gentle vocal style. In fact, Christopher Vanderkooy’s guitar drove him all the way over the barricade and into the crowd to rip it on the guitar. The band’s success has been snowballing since the release of their debut EP, Sweet FA, in 2016. The band continues on their tour. Upcoming dates are available here .
The Halluci Nation (formerly Tribe Called Red) combines first nations music with electronic and instrumental hip hop elements to create a distinctive sound you’ve never heard before. Their performance encompasses a DJ booth towards the back of the stage where members Tim “2oolman” Hill and Ehren “Bear Witness” Thomas run the show while first nations dancers occupy the foreground. Haviah Mighty even returned to the stage to perform a song in collaboration with The Halluci Nation and Odario called “Ba Na Na.” The Fort York stage during The Halluci Nation show was the place to be for dancing around in the grass at Field Trip this year.
Wrapping up the festival was Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats all the way from Denver, Colorado. The Night Sweats band is an R&B side project created by Rateliff in 2013, which has since amassed a large following with the success of “S.O.B,” a song featured on their self-titled debut album. After a day full of exciting performances, this was the perfect end to the festival. Folk rock sang with so much soul and gusto, kept spirits high, and allowed everybody to feel absolutely free and happy.

Music + concerts, music + concerts | field trip fest will celebrate community, beer and folk music in san juan capistrano, the single-day music and craft beer festival will feature sets by donavon frankenreiter, nikki lane and robert jon & the wreck at rancho riding park on saturday, march 30..
“Inside our brewery, the largest word written on the wall is ‘community,’ and we’re pretty serious about it,” said Brian Hendon, president and co-founder of San Juan Capistrano’s Docent Brewing, during a recent phone interview.
“A lot of times, people say things, and it’s hard to know if they are true, but trust me, this is what we do everything for. It’s always about the community,” he continued.
This commitment to the community lies at the heart of Docent Brewing, a sentiment that resonates deeply as they gear up to celebrate its 7th anniversary with Field Trip Fest . The festival, set to take place at Rancho Riding Park in San Juan Capistrano on Saturday, March 30, will offer attendees a vibrant blend of folk music and brews.

Docent Brewing began its journey in 2017 and introduced its inaugural Field Trip Fest in 2019 to mark its second anniversary that March. The festival’s name stems from the team’s decision to christen their beer cans ‘field trips’ at the brewery as a playful nod to embracing adventure and exploration outdoors, fostering a connection with childlike wonder. This year, the tradition continues as cans retain the same name, offering fans a familiar experience to enjoy.
The single-day fest will debut at a new location this year, just a stone’s throw from its previous spot. Nestled on the opposite side of the creek from its former home at Reata Park , the larger outdoor space was a strategic move, Hendon shared, as the team wanted to keep the fun in the same vicinity, but just with more space.
Despite the festival’s significant expansion since its reinstatement post the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022, Hendon said that its core objective remains unchanged: to commemorate and celebrate Docent Brewing’s anniversary each year, coincidentally accompanied by a star-studded lineup of folk acts.
The music and craft beer festival will include two stages with performances by alt-country rocker Nikki Lane and singer-songwriter Donavon Frankenreiter , along with performances by Alabama folk outlaw Early James, Orange County rockers Robert Jon & The Wreck , Eric Roebuck, Leroy From The North and Alice Wallace .
“When we first created Field Trip Fest, the initial goal was to create a folk festival, but I personally didn’t think we had many in Southern California,” Hendon said. “I’m originally from West Virginia, and there’s some really great rootsy and folk festivals in Colorado and back east and the Appalachian Mountains, (so we’re) bringing that energy over here. It’s also important for us to bring local acts to the stage, and fans seem to appreciate that sense of community in music.”
Hendon is equally excited about the festival’s Volkswagen bus show produced by the South County Bus Society, where folks can browse through 80 classic Volkswagen buses as well as a handful of eclectic cars.
There will be more than 40 local breweries in attendance, offering those 21-and-older samples of a variety of brews from 1-4:30 p.m. Adding to the culinary list, Heritage BBQ , renowned as one of South Orange County’s premier eateries, will be on the grounds.
As Field Trip Fest commemorates another anniversary, it also honors the inauguration of Docent Brewing’s third brewery in Corona Del Mar, alongside its latest establishment in San Clemente. While expansion is on the horizon, Hendon remains steadfast in his desire for the festival to uphold the values of community, friendship and good music that have defined Field Trip Fest and continue to shape its legacy.
“When we first started, it was just us inviting our closest friends, whether it came to breweries or musicians we knew, and that’s how it’s kind of always stayed. It’s the core of who we are.”

A guide to Moscow’s summer festivals
May 26, 2018 • 4 min read

Believe it or not, in summer Moscow usually gets rather hot. It’s also the season when the city is fully awake, with more events happening than at any other time of the year. Almost every weekend a new market, exhibition or festival takes place, making it pretty hard to choose which one to attend.
Of course, the highlight of this summer in the Russian capital will be the celebration of football, as Moscow gets ready to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup (from 14 June to 15 July) along with 10 other cities across the country. Nevertheless, over the years some big annual events have become an integral – and fun – part of Moscow’s summer culture. Here are our top picks.
Usadba Jazz at Arkhangelskoe
This iconic open-air jazz festival has been taking place in Moscow for over a decade, making it one of the city’s favourite outdoor events. The location is always the same – the gorgeous 19th-century Arkhangelskoe Estate and its surroundings. Apart from some great classical and modern jazz, blues, funk, soul and world music, there’s a new theme each year: in 2017 it was ecology, introducing some local eco-designers and culinary artists to jazz-loving Muscovites.
Dates: 2–3 June 2018
Red Square Book Fest
This year Moscow’s annual book festival will be taking over the historic Red Square for the fourth time. The event celebrates the reading culture, introduces the best local publishing houses, and allows visitors to purchase books, attend masterclasses and listen to some well-known modern Russian writers. The program covers several themes, including fiction, non-fiction, ebooks, children’s and educational literature, antique and secondhand books, as well as Russian regions. Famous Russian museums present their publishing projects and catalogues, and there are live concerts and performances throughout the festival.
Dates: 3–6 June 2018
Moscow Flower Show
Who knew Moscow could be a rose? Last year a new sort of rose was created just to celebrate the 870th anniversary of the Russian capital. This international garden festival is a paradise for the admirers of landscape design and all things green and blooming. Both recognised and up-and-coming landscape designers present their works and compete for the main prize, awarded by an international jury. And visitors get a chance to release their inner flower child.
Dates: 29 June–8 July 2018
Taste of Moscow
This international food festival has been around for a long time, covering 19 cities of the world and gaining huge popularity in Moscow. The city’s 30 best restaurants will take part in the program this year, offering visitors their most renowned dishes and products. You can treat yourself to delicacies from one of the exclusive menus created specifically for the festival, attend degustations or learn how to cook from a professional chef. The interactive program will also include concerts, masterclasses, pop-up performances and children’s activities.
Dates: 26–29 July 2018
Much loved by both locals and visitors to the city, the annual Park Live rock festival has achieved international status in its six years of existence, treating the fans with performances from world-famous and local rock stars. Hosting Muse in 2015 has been the highlight in the festival’s history, while Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lana Del Rey, Limp Bizkit and System of a Down have also headlined. In 2018 revellers will have a chance to see David Guetta, Gorillaz and Massive Attack at the vibrant Gorky Park in the heart of the city.
Dates: 27–29 July 2018
Afisha Picnic
Moscow’s biggest open-air festival is a summer rave for food and music lovers. Organized by Afisha magazine, it’s been expanding year on year, eventually moving from concert halls and stadiums to the vast Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve , a former royal estate and a Unesco World Heritage Site by the Moscow River. The organisers make sure there’s lots going on, so apart from multiple music stages you can find food stalls with local products, a designers’ market, gaming and lecture areas – all with a strict no-alcohol policy.
Dates: 4 August 2018

Times and Epochs
The ultimate historical festival in Russia expands with each passing year, taking over Moscow parks, recreational areas and some of the main streets. It brings together the best from the world of historical re-enactment, boasting more than 6000 geeky participants in 2017 (many of them from abroad). Soldiers, merchants, craftsmen, musicians all walk the streets in traditional costumes, performing or teaching the arts, crafts and games of the past. Best of all, the festival is focused on getting the audience involved in the lifestyles of different eras, from the Stone Age to the Soviet times.
Dates: 10–22 August 2018
Moscow City Day
Moscow turned 870 in 2017, and to celebrate the occasion, the city administration decided to host a 10-day festival under the slogan ‘Moscow is a city where history is being made’. With Russian avant-garde the main theme, dozens of events, lectures, performances and street markets celebrated the history of the capital as well as its prominent inhabitants. Plenty of music, food and modern art is always to be expected on the city streets during this time. Don’t miss the magnificent fireworks.
Dates: 1–10 September 2018
