Documents such as medical records, banking statements, and bills can be stored in the cloud or on digital thumb drives. However, paper documents still play a role in business and personal life, so it’s important to protect them. Whether looking to secure a will, a visa, a certified copy of a birth certificate, or even valuables like jewelry or a laptop, a fireproof document bag can help.

We decided to test several fireproof document bags to determine which models stood out above the rest. Keep reading to learn how each one performed in our hands-on tests and earned the title of being a best fireproof document bag for inclusion in this guide.

How We Tested the Best Fireproof Document Bags

We knew going into this testing that fireproof document bags are designed to protect shoppers’ most important documents. We also understood the unique nature of this testing: We’d only get one shot to see if each of these six bags would perform as advertised, so we had to ensure we were exposing them to extreme heat—simulating the realistic conditions for which they are designed. However, we also had to test without breathing in chemicals or setting the house ablaze. To safely and accurately complete this testing, we fired up a 68,000 British thermal unit (BTU) propane heater outside and then placed each bag directly in front of it on a concrete surface.

We kept each bag in front of the heater for 10 minutes. Our goal was not merely to see how well the document bag survived the heat but—most importantly—how well the paper we placed inside each document bag stayed intact. After 10 minutes, we moved the bag away from the heat, let it cool, and checked the contents.

It’s important to note that none of these bags are designed to withstand actual flames. Most of them are intended to be kept inside a safe. All of the bags suffered a lot of damage during the testing but still achieved their purpose since the papers inside remained intact.

Our Top Picks

These fireproof document bags all handle intense heat and feature strong, reliable closures. Depending on the specific need, the best fireproof document bag for any shopper might well be among the following models.

Product Specs

  • Heat resistance: 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Size: 10.63 inches tall by 14.17 inches wide by 3.93 inches deep
  • Materials: Silicone-treated fiberglass
  • 4 mesh bags can hold multiple items and documents
  • 2 compartment folders offer plenty of space for larger items
  • Includes a combination lock to keep sensitive documents safe
  • The smaller bag suffered quite a bit of damage, so it would be better used inside the main bag.

Featuring multiple fireproof layers and numerous compartments, the Engpow fireproof document bag is well suited for protecting valuable items while keeping them organized for easy retrieval. It measures 10.63 inches tall by 14.17 inches wide by 3.93 inches deep, offering plenty of room in the main compartment to store letter-size folders and papers.

This model is constructed of two layers of silicone-treated fiberglass that protects the contents from heat up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. It also includes a combination lock to keep the contents

. The inside of the zippered top contains four mesh bags for securing passports or certificates and two additional compartment folders to hold items like business cards and up to four flash drives.

The Engpow bag withstood the heat better than any other full-size bag in our testing. The zipper and its seam melted, but the rest of the bag was almost entirely unscathed. We also liked the dividers inside the bag for organizing documents, IDs, cards, and other important items. It came with an additional smaller bag that we could place inside for extra protection. However, that bag took much more damage—although the paper inside remained intact.

  • Size: 12 inches tall by 15 inches wide by 5 inches deep
  • Materials: Silicone-coated and polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-coated fiberglass
  • Large storage space
  • Combination of zipper and Velcro-type closure ensures a tight seal
  • Includes a comfortable rubber handle and adjustable shoulder strap
  • Storage in a fireproof briefcase or safe recommended

For protecting documents and other valuables from heat up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, shoppers will want to consider this Roloway fireproof document bag. The bag measures 12 inches tall by 15 inches wide by 5 inches deep, which is large enough to store a stack of documents along with other valuables, or even a laptop.

This bag is made from two layers of silicone-coated fiberglass. It features a high-quality, lockable zipper (lock not included) and a Velcro-type closure. It also includes both a handle and an adjustable shoulder strap.

The Roloway did take some damage during our test, especially around the hook and loop flap. It also smoked considerably more than the other bags. We were initially concerned that the smoke was the paper burning inside, but it stayed in perfect condition. Overall, this is a relatively simple bag with a lot of storage space, making it a solid choice for anyone looking to protect quite a few documents in the event of a fire.

  • Size: 15 inches tall by 11 inches wide
  • Materials: Silicone-coated fiberglass and aluminum foil
  • Zipper and flap closure with 2 separate compartments help organize documents
  • Dual-layered design provides additional protection from fire
  • Pockets are large enough to fit legal-size documents
  • Paper was still intact after the testing but did sustain some damage
  • Number of documents the bag can hold is limited by its size

Protecting valuable documents doesn’t have to break the bank. The Colcase fireproof document bag comes with an affordable price tag and resists 2,000 degree Fahrenheit conditions with dual layers of silicone-coated fiberglass.

This 100 percent fireproof bag is 15 inches tall by 11 inches wide, making it suitable for small and large documents, jewelry, or a laptop. To ensure even more protection, it features both a zipper and a flap closure.

The Colcase bag was the only document bag in our testing that allowed the paper inside to burn at all. However, the paper

still intact after the test, which truly surprised us due to the significant damage that the bag sustained. This bag won’t hold many documents, so users will have to prioritize which documents they protect and which they risk (or buy multiple document bags).

Best With Waterproof

Flypal fireproof and water-resistant bag.

  • Size: 12.6 inches tall by 16.6 inches wide by 6.5 inches deep
  • Materials: Silicone gel, fiberglass, aluminum foil, and nonwoven fabric
  • Plenty of interior space for larger items, such as cell phones or hard drives
  • Includes a lock for an extra layer of security
  • Zipper was difficult to use even before being exposed to extreme temperature

The Flypal fireproof and water-resistant document bag is a reliable and secure solution for safeguarding

important documents

and valuables. This bag is capable of withstanding temperatures up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and the impressive features make it a must-have for protecting belongings.

The FlyPal bag is equipped with a lock, providing an added layer of security. With a spacious interior and an additional zipper pouch, this bag is 12.6 inches tall by 16.6 inches wide by 6.5 inches deep, which is large enough to organize documents, cell phones, or even external hard drives and keep them readily accessible.

The first few seconds of our heat test for the FlyPal bag were initially concerning. The hook-and-loop closures failed immediately, and the flap started to funnel hot air right toward the zipper. The lock also started to melt immediately. However, after 10 minutes, it didn’t withstand much more damage and survived the testing quite well. The paper inside was still completely intact. Our biggest complaint with this model was that it was difficult to work the zipper even long before we exposed it to the heat.

DocSafe Multilayer Fireproof Document Bag

  • Size: 12.5 inches tall by 17 inches wide by 7.2 inches deep
  • Large size provides fireproof storage of multiple items and documents
  • Multiple compartments and pockets can neatly store documents, jewelry, and electronics
  • Exterior reflective strip allows for better visibility
  • The reflective strip melted away almost immediately during testing

The DocSafe fireproof document bag is an ideal solution for keeping a large number of important documents and valuables secure and protected. This bag is a generous 12.5 inches tall by 17 inches wide by 7.2 inches deep, offering ample storage capacity for all essential items.

Designed with multiple pockets, slots, and compartments, the bag will help organize belongings with ease—from passports and legal documents to USB drives and jewelry. One notable feature of the DocSafe bag is the reflective strip on its exterior. This strip enhances visibility, so the bag is easier to locate in low-light conditions or emergencies, such as a house fire.

The DocSafe bag was one of the most secure and durable bags in our testing. While the reflective strip only lasted about 30 seconds, the rest of the bag fared well, though it was far from reusable. The closure stayed shut, and the zipper remained mostly functional. Just as was the case with most of the bags in our testing, the paper inside the bag remained in perfect condition.

Roloway Small Fireproof Money Bag

  • Size: 5 inches tall by 8 inches wide
  • Materials: Silicone-coated fiberglass
  • Compact size is suitable for small items and travel
  • Fold-over Velcro-type closure keeps contents securely in place
  • Affordable compared to similar options available
  • Best if stored in a fireproof safe or a larger fireproof bag

Just the right size for safely stowing cash, a passport, or folded documents, the Roloway fireproof bag tucks inside a suitcase or a backpack easily. It measures a diminutive 5 inches tall by 8 inches wide and will protect valuables in temperatures up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

This Roloway money bag is made from silicone-coated fiberglass and features a fold-over Velcro-type closure at the top. Pair it with a larger fireproof bag for added security, or store it in a fireproof safe for even more protection.

After testing the thin Colcase fireproof document bag (our #3 pick), during which the paper sustained some damage, we had similar concerns about this small bag. We feared it would burn quickly, as would the paper inside. However, that wasn’t the case. The bag withstood the flames quite well. The edges of the hook-and-loop flap melted, but the zipper and the paper inside stayed intact. In fact, the bag was mostly reusable, which surprised us.

What to consider when choosing a fireproof document bag .

A fireproof document bag is more “fire-resistant” than fireproof, as this type of protective bag can and will fail to protect its contents from a raging fire. Instead, it offers a modicum of security against intense heat if a fire starts and the document bag is nearby.

Most fireproof document bags are made from silicone-treated fiberglass, and the better ones include two or more layers of treated fiberglass for added heat protection. Some also feature aluminum foil liners. If the bag is amid actual flames, don’t expect the contents to escape unscathed. For absolute fire protection, consider a fireproof safe that is rated to withstand flames for 1 or 2 hours.

Fire-Resistance Rating

No federal regulations exist for testing fireproof document bags, but manufacturers use materials known to be fire-resistant. To determine the level of fireproof protection, look for the maximum amount of heat the bag can withstand, typically between 1,000 and 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Some bags bear a rating of “UL 94,” which means that Underwriters Laboratories, a global safety certification company, has tested and approved the materials for resisting fire and melting. Still, not all bags will have this rating, and the rating is not an assurance of absolute fireproof protection.

Size and Compartments

Fireproof document bags range in size from envelope-size bags with a single compartment to larger briefcase-size bags with multiple zipped compartments or pockets for keeping papers organized. Additionally, some fireproof document bags sell in sets, with a smaller bag the user can tuck inside the larger bag for additional protection.

Water and Heat Resistance

Most manufacturers also advertise their fireproof bags as waterproof or water-resistant, which is an important feature. If the bag is in a burning house or the trunk of a car that’s in flames, the fire is likely to be doused with a water hose, so it’s essential to have a level of water protection for the stored documents in the bag.

Lockability and Closure Style

Fireproof document bags typically close with either a zipper made from fire-resistant materials, or they feature a snug-fitting Velcro-type closure. Some models include more than one type of closure, such as an interior zipper and an additional Velcro-type closure, increasing the bag’s fire resistance.

Items Being Stored

Common items stored in a fireproof document bag include property records, birth certificates, paper money, passports, and notes with written passwords to online accounts. Some bags are large enough to add other valuables, such as jewelry, antique photographs, digital thumb drives, or even tablets or laptops.

Tips for Using a Fireproof Document Bag

Simply storing documents in a fireproof bag offers a measure of protection, but don’t stop there—always store the bag itself in a safe location. A few tips can help users gain the most protection from a fireproof document bag.

  • When selecting a fireproof document bag, consider choosing a size larger than necessary to accommodate additional items in the future.
  • The higher the fire-resistant rating of the bag, the safer the items will be. For optimal protection, look for a bag that can withstand at least 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Fireproof bags can trap moisture inside, making documents smell musty or encouraging mold or mildew. Make sure all papers and valuables are dry before placing them in the bag.

Fireproof document bags offer some protection for essential paperwork and other items against heat damage, but they don’t offer a 100 percent guarantee against a raging fire. Shoppers considering purchasing a fireproof document bag likely have some questions.

Q. Can a fireproof bag replace a fireproof briefcase?

A fireproof bag is not as protective as a fireproof briefcase, but it will still help protect documents and valuables. Storing the bag inside a fireproof safe or a fireproof briefcase will offer additional protection.

Q. How fireproof are fireproof bags?

A quality fireproof bag will protect documents from igniting due to intense heat if they’re near a fire, up to about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temperature rises above that level or the bag falls directly into the fire, its contents could be damaged or destroyed.

Q. What is a fireproof bag made of?

Most fireproof document bags feature one or more layers of silicone-treated fiberglass, which is known for its fire-resistant properties.

Top Pick!

Oxzoh Fireproof Bag with TSA Lock

Fireproof Bag with Lock (TSA Approved) No Key Required | Fireproof Document Bag XXXL Size (17 x 12 x 6 inch), A4 & A5 Size | Water Resistance Fireproof Document Box | Firebox for Document Storage

The Oxzoh Fireproof Bag with Lock (TSA Approved) is the best seller among our readers. It’s large enough to store legal-size papers, has an excellent TSA Lock (far better than many competitors), and can withstand flames up to 2192°F.

In addition, it comes with two smaller bags for cash and passports. It’s suitable for short-term flame resistance, but you must step up to a heavier fireproof briefcase (see below).

Selecting between a soft or hard shell model is the first choice when deciding on the best fireproof bags for your documents. The difference is that while a soft shell fabric bag can withstand flames for short periods, a hard shell model protects against severe fires.

However, hard shells are more expensive because of their superior fireproof features.

The Best Fireproof Bags & Briefcases for Documents

We liked the Honeywell 1104 as the best fireproof briefcase for ourselves for fireproof briefcases. It is the only one on the market we could find with internal dimensions to fit up to legal documents. In addition, it’s both fireproof and waterproof.

The Oxzoh bag is a cut above the competition for fireproof bags. But there are other options, including the more affordable ‘Formline Supply Fireproof Bag,’ which was our choice for a cheap non-lockable option.

We’ve provided full selection criteria at the end of this product review to show you how we came to our choices. But we know you want our picks!

Best Fireproof Document Bags & Briefcases

The best fireproof document bags are:

Reviews of the Best Fireproof Document Bags & Briefcases

1. honeywell 1104 fireproof briefcase.

Quick Review: A hard shell briefcase better protects documents from fires. The best fireproof briefcase is the Honeywell 1104 – it’s got excellent fireproof and waterproof ratings at a reasonable price.

Honeywell Safes & Door Locks LHLP1104G 1 Hour Fire Safe Waterproof Safe Box Chest with Carry Handle, Large, 1104, Black

The Honeywell 1104 is a briefcase for serious fire protection. We like the idea of a hard shell model to protect legal-size documents against accidental house fires. It is more than just flame resistant – it can withstand severe fires.

UL has independently certified it to withstand 1700°F house fires for up to 60 minutes.

It’s the only fireproof briefcase that can hold legal-size documents a few inches longer than A4 documents.

As an example, legal-size documents are typical for bank and mortgage documentation.

What we like:

  • Strongest Fireproof Rating: While soft shell fireproof document bags can withstand flames for short periods, they can fight house fires and infernos. We feel we could use it as a document safe in the home.
  • Holds Legal Size Documents: It’s the only hard shell fireproof briefcase we can find to keep legal-size documents.
  • A Good Shape: It looks like a briefcase that we can fit under a bed.
  • Waterproof Rated: The soft shell bags in the rest of this review are not waterproof rated.

Keep in Mind:

  • Price: A fireproof briefcase with a hard shell is more expensive due to its solid fireproof cover.
  • Weight:  It’s significantly heavier than a soft shell bag, at 56 Lbs. That’s normal for a hard shell fireproof briefcase.
  • Not Theft Proof:  While it will probably deter petty theft, it’s not pry-resistant. You’d need to step up to a fireproof security safe.
  • Moisture Buildup Issues:  As it’s airtight, it will likely need a moisture absorber, such as a silica gel bag , to prevent condensation from building up inside.

2. Oxzoh Fireproof Bag with Lock (TSA Approved)

Quick Review: We think this one is the best fireproof document bag. It’s a sturdy bag with a top-quality TSA lock. In addition, it comes with two smaller fireproof bags for cash and passports.

Fireproof Bag with Lock (TSA Approved) No Key Required | Fireproof Document Bag XXXL Size (17 x 12 x 6 inch), A4 & A5 Size | Water Resistance Fireproof Document Box | Firebox for Document Storage

We were sold by the three-in-one bag here. So we figured we’d use the giant bag for our will and mortgage papers. And then use the smaller ones for valuables like our passports, some cash, and a few USB media drives with essential documents.

We thought the TSA lock would come in handy. We believe the lock would be most beneficial to keep kids’ prying hands out. But it can provide an extra layer of theft protection when a thief comes by.

Unfortunately, the bag is relatively light so thieves could run off with the whole pack!

There’s a TSA lock for many travelers, and an over-the-shoulder strap would be appealing.

However, the bag’s easier to carry around than a fireproof safe because it’s more lightweight, and the over-the-shoulder strap makes it feel like you’re carrying a messenger bag.

  • Safety and Security: The TSA lock pushes this one above many competitors. It’s a sturdy lock that you can take with you traveling.
  • Great Fire Resistance Rating: It is fire-resistant up to 2192°F (UL94 VTM-0 tested), the highest rating in the bags category.
  • Easy to Carry: Lighter than a regular safe and can be carried around with the over-the-shoulder strap (included).
  • Holds Legal Size Documents: Legal size documents are slightly larger than A4 documents. This bag will fit both legal-size and A4 documents comfortably.
  • Bonus Cash and Passport Bags: You’ll get two smaller fireproof bags for storing cash and documents.
  • Price: It’s not the cheapest bag on the list, but it’s got the best value for money, in our opinion. The TSA lock is the best one we have come across for this range of bags, and the two additional bags can come in handy.

3. Trikton Fireproof Document Safe Bag with TSA Lock

Quick Review: This bag was our close runner-up in the soft shell category. It’s got everything we wanted in our top bag, except it doesn’t come with those two extra minor cash and passport bags. However, it is a little cheaper to offset that.

TRIKTON X-Large 16x12x3.5, Fireproof Document Safe Bag with Lock TSA, XL, Full Opening Zipper, Stores Legal Size Files, Visible in The Dark, Fire and Water-Resistant Briefcase | Lock Box for Documents

If we were not interested in the extra cash and passport bags offered by Oxzoh, we might have considered this one. However, it has most of the other benefits provided by the Oxzoh and comes in at a lower price point – so there are a lot of pros to getting this one!

It’s super easy to carry them with an over-the-shoulder strap, and the XL size version is a bit thinner than the Oxzoh so it would be less bulky. Another benefit of its thinness is that it’ll fit more discretely on a bookshelf or safe.

It’s got a decent TSA lock for security and travel. We noticed a few sellers didn’t include the TSA lock in the sale, but we found this one that does, so we think it’s worth going with this seller on Amazon.

Something else that we thought was an interesting idea was the reflective border. Suppose you shine a light on it at night. In that case, it’ll light up, making the recovery of the bag much more manageable during an emergency.

Lastly, the fireproof rating of 2000°F is toward the higher end of the ratings for fire-resistant bags.

  • Safety and Security: The TSA lock pushes this one above many competitors, in our opinion. It’s a sturdy lock that you can take with you when traveling.
  • Easy to Carry: This one is lighter than a regular safe. You can carry it around with the over-the-shoulder strap (included).
  • Thin: The bag comes in XL and XXL. The XL version is lighter than the Oxzoh, making it easier to carry and store discreetly.
  • Holds Legal Size Documents: Legal size documents are slightly larger than A4 documents. This bag can fit both legal-size and A4 documents comfortably.
  • High Fireproof Rating: This model rates as fireproof to 2000°F, the highest fireproof rating in the bags category.
  • Thinner than the Oxzoh: We put this down as a ‘pro.,’ But if we wanted one that holds wide binders, we’d stick to the Oxzoh above or jump up to the XXL size in this model.
  • No Additional Bags: Comes with only one bag, no internal bags for cash and passports.

4. Roloway XL Fireproof Document Bag (with Bonus Mini-Bag)

Quick Review: This is a lovely bag with a bonus passport-size mini-bag. It’s lockable but doesn’t come with a lock.

ROLOWAY Large (17 x 12 x 5.8 inches) Fireproof Bag, Fireproof Document Bags, Fireproof Money Bag, Water Resistant Fireproof Safe Bag for Documents and Valuables Storage

The Roloway bag offers a bit of everything but is not the absolute best in any category, in our opinion.

This bag is the same size as the XXL Trikton / Oxzoh above. So it’ll fit A4 and legal-size documents comfortably, or you could put a binder into the bag for easy storage.

The bag is lockable, but you have to buy the lock separately, unlike the above two packs. Purchasing a separate lock alone would push the price of the Roloway above its competitors, which is probably the main reason we didn’t choose this bag.

Similarly, you get an additional passport-sized fireproof bag – but you get one, while with the Oxzoh, you get two.

Lastly, this bag has a similar fireproof rating of 2000°F using the same UL94 VTM-0 test above. Therefore, the top 3 bags we’ve ranked are equal in the fireproof rating.

  • Good Width: We think you could fit quite a sizeable legal binder.
  • Bonus Passport Bag: We want the bonus passport bag for keeping your passport and some cash fire safe when storing it.
  • Good Fire Resistance Rating: It is fire resistant to 2192°F (UL94 VTM-0 tested), the highest rating in the bags category.
  • Fewer Bonus Bags: The Oxzoh has one additional bonus bag than this one.
  • No Lock Included: This was a deal-breaker for us.

5. Blokkd Fireproof Document Bag with Lock

Quick Review: It has a superior fire-resistance rating to many others and has some tremendous extra pockets. Lock included.

BLOKKD Fireproof Document Bag, Waterproof Fireproof Safe, Document Protection, Fire Proof Safety for Important Documents, Fireproof Box, Fireproof Bag

We were impressed by this bag but decided not to choose it.

It’s a similar size to the other XXL bags on this list and has all the things you’d expect, like the over-the-shoulder carry strap.

But it has some additional features that we like. For example, the back of the bag has cool extra small pockets (you can’t see them in the image above, but the other Amazon images show the pockets on the back).

It’s got a decent fire-resistant rating in a higher and more difficult category than most others. But to be honest, all these bags are only flame resistant and not fireproof, in our opinion.

  • Great Price: We were surprised at this bag’s cheapness, given its decent flame-resistant rating and features that other models don’t include.
  • Great Extra Pockets: We love how many extra pockets are on the back of this bag to store your additional valuables like USB drives.
  • Higher Fire Resistant Rating: It’s got the UL94-V rating higher than the UL94-VTM rating of some other bags on this list.
  • Fits Large Documents: With the diameters of 16.5″ x 14″ x 2.6″, you should be able to A4 and do legal-size documents there.
  • Lock Included: There’s a lock included with this one, but it’s not TSA-compatible.
  • Not a TSA Lock: The included lock is not TSA compatible.

6. Formline Supply Fireproof Briefcase

Quick Review: An affordable choice that’s slightly smaller than competitors and has a lower fire-resistance rating.

Extra Large Fireproof Document Bag/Briefcase by Formline Supply - Storage File Organizer Keeps Important Photos, Folders, Valuables, and Money Protected and Safe. 15x12x5 inch Fire/Water Resistant

A nice sleek-looking bag that could pass as a regular laptop bag that someone takes to and from work. The carry handle and over-the-shoulder strap make it an easy-to-carry accessory for documents or laptops.

It’s got a fire-resistant fiberglass casing to help protect equipment in its time of need.

We like how affordable this bag is. But, on the other hand, its fireproof rating is lower than its competitors and a little smaller. Nonetheless, it should still fit most laptops and documents.

It does not come with a lock.

  • Affordable: It’s one of the most affordable bags on this list.
  • Easy to Carry: The over-the-shoulder carry strap is a good addition that some competitors don’t have. It has a handle for hand-held carrying.
  • Looks Good: We like the stylish look of the above other bags on this list.
  • Low Fire Resistance Rating: This one claims to have fire resistance up to 1000°F. That’s significantly lower than competitors.
  • Smaller than Others: Its width is 15 inches, less than most others on this list. Nonetheless, it’ll still fit A4 and legal documents.
  • Not Lockable: It would be hard to add a lock as only one zipper exists.

Frequently Asked Questions: What are the Best Fireproof Bags?

How ‘fireproof’ is the best fireproof document bags.

Fireproof document bags rate using the UL 94-VTM standard, which tests bags against an open flame for a few seconds. So fireproof bags can’t withstand a home fire or inferno.

Their primary goal is to be flame resistant against a small fire for a short time. So, for example, if you accidentally dropped it in a campfire and pulled it back out.

Suppose you prefer to step up to something that’ll stand a chance to withstand a full-on blaze. In that case, there are fireproof briefcases like the Honeywell 1104. This model has UL tests under more arduous conditions to fight severe fires for up to 1 hour .

Can a fireproof bag replace a fireproof briefcase?

No. Fireproof briefcases are much more resilient against fires. However, you might notice that the above bags aren’t UL-approved for specific lengths. So the fire resistance won’t last as long as you might hope – just minutes.

The benefit of the bags is that they’re much lighter and easier to carry around. Plus, many people choose to put their documents in a bag, then the bag in a more robust, fire-resistant safe .

This double-layer protection is standard for people storing wills or small business people storing articles of incorporation safely.

How fireproof are fireproof bags?

Not very. Your documents may resist flames for a short while. Still, the matter is that these bags are not airtight. Therefore, oxygen (a significant fuel for fires) will carry the fire into the bag before long.

A good fireproof safe is UL tested for either 30 or 60 minutes, giving much surer protection.

The UL test for fireproof bags is much, much lower.

We should call them ‘fire resistant’ or even ‘flame-resistant,’ not fireproof. The point of the test is to check to ensure a bag doesn’t catch fire when exposed to a small flame.

The primary test that these bags are covered by is the UL 94 VTM-0 (Vertical Thin Material) test.

This test will expose the material to a flame for less than 50 seconds cumulatively and less than 10 seconds in a row. Compare that to the UL tests for safes, which expose safes to fire for up to 1 hour.

From what materials are fireproof bags made?

A fireproof bag has fiberglass coated with silicon. Fiberglass is a prevalent fireproofing agent that you’ll find in kitchen fire safety blankets. It is very resilient to fire but is flexible like cloth.

However, it’s very itchy. So, manufacturers cover most fireproof bags with silicone, which gives them a smoother finish.

Why would I use a fireproof bag?

People use fireproof bags for extra security for their valuable documents. Some of these documents can be passports, wills, marriage and birth certificates, or articles of incorporation.

The bags are often stored in a discrete space in the office or inside a larger safe for added fireproof protection.

Others may use the bag as their everyday carry bag if they often work with open flames. For example, if you work in a lab or a factory. In this case, you’ll want to pay extra attention to getting a bag with an over-the-shoulder carry strap.

Our Selection Criteria (Features we Look For)

We look for prices between $15 for the cheap end of the spectrum to about $60 for a better fireproof bag. The average price for fireproof bags is about $39. We don’t provide the exact cost for our reviews as prices vary regularly.

Please check the Amazon links for the current prices for each bag above.

Fire Resistance Rating

As noted above, ‘fireproof’ bags aren’t genuinely fireproof. However, they’re more flame-resistant and won’t catch fire very quickly. So they’re great for having in a lab where you work with open flames regularly, for example, for some protection.

Also, they’re suitable for added protection of documents kept in a safe that’s not fireproof.

The fireproof rating for thin materials is usually UL 94 VTM-0. This test will measure the bag’s resistance against an open flame to see if it burns, scolds, or damages its integrity.

So, we check to see if the bag has that UL 94 VTM-0 rating.

The alternative is to step up to a gun safe or a built-in home safe .

The main concern for size will probably be that it fits either a laptop or a legal-size document. Legal-size documents are a little bigger than A4 documents, coming in at 8.5 x 14.0 inches.

That’s 3 inches longer than the regular A4 size of 8.5 x 11.0 inches. So, we would check to ensure that a bag is at least 14 inches wide if we want to fit legal documents inside.

Pockets or Extra Bags

We like that some bags come with extra pockets. For example, the Blokkd bag comes with external pockets. These will be less fireproof in a big blaze but are convenient for storage.

The other option is bonus bags which you can toss into the giant bag. Our top pick (the Oxzoh) comes with two additional bonus bags for storing passports, USB drives, and cash. We thought this was an outstanding other feature.

Lockability

If we’re buying the bag to store valuables, we’d probably want to be able to lock the bag. But, unfortunately, a lot of bags don’t come with a lock.

The top four bags on this list are lockable, but not all come with a lock.

Something else we consider is a TSA-approved lock if we have any plans to fly with the bag.

The first and second bags on this list come with TSA-approved locks. So, if you plan to fly, we will choose these two above all others.

Portability

If you want to carry your bag around, you must ensure the bag comes with a shoulder strap or carry handle. It’s variable whether the bag comes with this or not. We like how the Formline comes with a handle and shoulder strap.

Our top pick, the Oxzoh, also comes with a handle and shoulder strap.

However, some of these bags are wide. Therefore, if you plan to carry your fireproof suitcase to and from work daily, we recommend using a mid-depth option. Our favorites are the Trikton and the Formline.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, the best fireproof bag for us is the Oxzoh. We like that it comes with two smaller bags for cash and passports and a TSA lock for added security. In addition, it fits legal-size documents comfortably.

But, if we were to want one that’ll honestly resist an inferno, we’d step up to a fireproof briefcase. So, our pick as the best fireproof briefcase for ourselves was the Honeywell 1104. It’s the only one we found that can hold legal-size documents and has an excellent fireproof rating.

We feel that a genuinely fireproof safe is a better option for added protection for valuables against large fires. In addition, it will be much sturdier than any fireproof document bag.

Good luck with your purchasing decision!

Testimonials

Had tried two other fireproof bags, but neither was as large as advertised. This bag was larger than advertised – had room to spare. Seems well-constructed. It provides (hope we never need to find out!) the protection for our important ‘final wishes’ and instructions for the kids. The bag is stored in an expensive safe with only a 45 minute fire rating.

Seems to be well built and spacious. Being soft sided, it holds more than I expected. Cant really speak to the fire resistance, but has a nice finish which appears to resist heat.

The bag is very well-made and has several features I like. It is a good size, has two closures at the top to best protect the interior, has a panel to place in the bottom of the bag to add support and to keep the bag open. The zippers at the top allow for easy access to the interior, which is spacious and contains an extra zippered compartment. The bag itself is lightweight and has a built-in combination lock. I am very pleased with the design and construction of this product.

After reading multiple reviews I purchased several to store important documents in case of fire so I can grab and go. If I’m not home, hopefully they will protect all the important papers, pics, and small irreplaceable items. I like the fact that it has all the features I wanted.

I love it. If I have to evacuate, I can have all important stuff together. And know it will be safe in case of fire or floods.

It’s bigger than most waterproof bags, but yet easy transported. I like the ability to lock the bag. Clever design to lock the zipper. It’s not going to keep someone from taking the whole bag, but does provide some security for the contents.

This is an excellent fire and waterproof document bag looking like a briefcase. The material is similar to many others and is certainly fire and water proof, which doesn’t actually prevent the paper and electronics from being ruined by the fire heat. For this, thick insulated walls of a safe are required. So, if thrown in the fire even for a few minutes, everything inside will be destroyed. And this is true for all such bags.

Flypal bags are very light, portable, and convenient for access and storage. What makes this model superior to what I’ve seen and owned is the quality of workmanship. The hidden zipper and cover with the Velcro closures make it truly highly water resistant. Of course, if immersed into water, it will eventually get in, but the bag should certainly withstand rain, hosing, etc. Also, the material seems to be thicker than in most alternatives with reinforced top and bottom, which makes it much sturdier and more fire resistant.

It’s easy to make this bag waterproof by enclosing the contents into plastic bags. Also, enclosing the contents into smaller fire resistant bag(s) will greatly improve the overall level of fire resistance. The more air, which is an ideal insulator, will be inside around the contents, the less it will be subject to heat from the fire. Even loose paper envelopes should be helpful (until they get charred of course). And it’s not recommended that documents and electronics contact plastic directly because it will melt first and damage what’s inside. Use paper bags as a liner.

This bag holds so much more than the others I’ve looked at. Internal volume is plenty big (soda can for scale) – plenty of space for a couple of big 3″ D-ring binders to fit just fine. I’m impressed by how the closures work as well – the zipper looks very water-tight, and I think would resist water exposure to spray or minor immersion just fine. The velcro fasteners are sturdy, and the design allows for some overlap to protect the closures. I haven’t tested the lock at all – I probably won’t use it, and wasn’t a feature that I was interested in.

This firebox is exactly what I was looking for and just as described. I like the fact that it’s zippered all around, plus it has a flap that folds completely over that for the added protection. The shoulder strap makes it easy to move around, especially in the event of an emergency. We liked it so much, we ordered and received a 2nd one!

There are so many fireproof bags it could be hard to choose one. What I liked about this bag in particular was the top cover’s flap design and the built in combination lock. You can also add another lock on it, so there’s the added flexibility/security. The flap cover ensures that the contents are thoroughly protected since the cover for any given bag could be seen as a chink in the armor. The material is solid with decent design choices for the outside.

A well designed fire & water resistant go-bag for your valuables. Large top opens for easy access. Bag has a handle, shoulder strap and built-in lock. The interior sports a special attached side pouch for your ID, credit cards, passport, cash, etc. I’ll most likely purchase a second bag. It’s seldom a product exceeds my expectations – this purchase was and is a pleasant surprise.

This bag is designed well for carrying large documents or other items safely while traveling. I like that it has a small handle at the top, plus a strap for carrying it on your shoulder. The locking mechanism attaches the two zipper ends in the front and is easy to use, and it has Velcro to securely cover it, as well. The bright red stripes on the bag would make it easy to spot if it were misplaced among other items.

In my opinion, this fire-proof document bag is better than advertised. It is very light weight, and well lined with fire protective material. Although it doesn’t take up an excessive amount of space on the shelf, it is more than large enough to hold everything I wish to store in it, and then some. The combination lock is easy to use, and I’m certain my documents will be entirely safe.

I really like this bag. Holds a lot of documents and things including hanging folders. There’s a zipper closure then another outer closure with side and front velcro.

I was looking for a fireproof, waterproof safe to hold our familys wills, real estate papers which are legal size and larger size photos. This safe fills those requirements. Additionally i can fit a shoebox filled with memories inside as well. A shoe box size is 13×8″ and still have half the safe for other documents. It is lightweight and much easier to carry than our heavier sentry safe. I will being buying another one of these.

It has a good space to cover all the important documents i have and it is easy to access all the documents as the zip opening is around the case not on the center top. It has a small pouch inside to keep cash, passport kind of small items init.

After researching a lot of different fire/waterproof bags, I’m glad I went with this one! It’s very spacious, sturdy, and I feel much more secure having documents/old photos/hard drives/etc in here. I love that the Velcro flaps go all around the 3 sides of the zipper. I didn’t see any other bags that had that added layer of protection. Plus the design is just cool on this bag! I’d recommend it!

This is a great safe way to store anything. I have a growing watch collection and this makes it an easy to store without worrying about a fire or water damage.

We needed to protect an item larger than a 3 ring binder. This bag is perfect for our needs.

A nice bag that is made of good quality. Holds a nice amount of documents. Unfortunately we can’t say much as there is no fire to test it out. I did put a lighter to it and it held up as expected.

Very roomy-lightweight- wide opening makes it easy to insert large items-like portability-seems well made

8 Best Fireproof Document Bags and Envelopes in 2022

April 20, 2022 by Admin Leave a Comment

When it comes to storing important documents and valuables, getting the best fireproof document bag is essential. But how do you choose a fireproof bag and what are your best options? Find out now.

MAVEKK Fireproof Document Bag

There are several paper documents that need protection such as wills, birth certificates, passports, social security cards, and property and insurance records. Whether you’re keeping them at home or bringing them to work, proper safekeeping should be top of mind.

One of the most terrible things that can happen to your important documents and valuables is them getting burned in a fire. Your documents could turn to ashes in seconds, and it would be a pain to try to secure them again. Fortunately, you can use fireproof document bags and envelopes to protect such things in cases of fires.

But since there are too many fireproof bags in the market, ranging in construction, design, and level of fire resistance, we believe it is important that you know what your best options are. And to help you get to that, first, you should know what you need to look for in a fireproof document bag or envelope.

Why Do You Need a Fireproof Document Bag?

paper burning

Fire is like a thief in the night. It can take lives, damage properties, and burn valuables swiftly. Fires can cause panic, so it’s best to try to protect your valuables beforehand.

Using a fireproof document bag is one of the best ways to safely keep important papers. It serves as a fire-resistant storage space for things like your original birth certificates, marriage certificates, property contracts, insurance records, passports, photos, identity cards, and even some cash.

With fireproof document bags, your valuables won’t be as vulnerable to open flames. And if you’re able to evacuate quickly, those important papers and valuables won’t get damaged by fire. But since a fireproof document bag can only withstand fire to some extent, it is best to use it along with a reliable fireproof safe to maximize protection and safety.

How to Choose a Fireproof Document Envelope

Keep important documents, photos, cash, cards, and passports in a fireproof envelope. These envelopes are less bulky than fireproof bags, making them ideal for safekeeping documents at home or when you travel.

Here’s what you need to look for in a fireproof document envelope:

3 Layers of Fireproof Materials

Many products these days only use two materials: silicone coating and fiberglass. The best fireproof document envelopes or bags should have an aluminum layer on the inside to reinforce their ability to protect your documents against heat and fires. Silicone coating and fiberglass cloth are resistant to flames, while aluminum lining gives the bag added protection against fires.

The Thickness of the Silicone Coating

Thin silicone coating can burn easily and feels itchy especially when it only barely covers fiberglass cloth. Also, the thickness of the silicone coating doesn’t just indicate the bag’s ability to tolerate fire, but also how comfortable it would be to carry around.

Fire Resistance of Materials

It is wise to opt for fireproof bags with a UL 94 rating, which indicates that they use materials that are rated to resist fires and melting.

Bonus Features

It is also important to choose a fireproof bag with outstanding lockability mechanisms as you will be storing very important documents here.

Another important thing to consider is that it has waterproof zippers. This gives the bag an extra layer of protection should it get drenched when the sprinklers come on. Having a flap or sturdy velcro over the zippers also further reinforces the security of the bag.

Our manufacturer tested the materials we used to make the bags so they can withstand up to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit for a period of time.

It is also waterproof, thanks to its sealed, water-resistant zippers that keep your legal documents dry and secure even when sprayed with a high-pressure hose.

This particular pouch can keep most of your legal-size files, jewelry, passport, licenses and cards, and cash.

This document bag is fire resistant, thanks to the high-quality fireproof materials used in its construction: PVC coated fiberglass and silicone coated fiberglass. It is also both fireproof and waterproof.

We love that it is easy to carry. It has a sturdy handle so you can carry it with one hand, and you have the option to use the detachable shoulder strap as well. The reflective lining also makes it easy to locate so you can evacuate right away with your important documents.

Perhaps its most unique feature, though, as compared to the other fireproof bags on this list is that the Shieldable Fireproof Document Bag comes with a built-in TSA lock. We think this is a great quality in a fireproof bag as it brings in more sense of security, especially when you’re traveling or staying at an accommodation.

  • Comes with a TSA lock to strengthen its security features.
  • It has a U-shaped opening so you can easily and quickly access your valuables.
  • Made with fireproof and waterproof materials for protection against fire and water damage.
  • Large storage capacity – you can store all your important papers and valuables and carry them all in one go.
  • Some people might find this document bag too bulky to carry daily, especially on a commute.

Fireproof Document Bags and Envelopes Frequently Asked Questions

What is a fireproof document bag.

A fireproof document bag is a bag rated to protect contents from fire and water in a short period of time. This specific document bag is made of fire-resistant materials so that your papers and valuables won’t catch fire easily. It is also often waterproof since there’s also the threat of getting wet when doused by a fire hose or sprinkler system.

Do fireproof bags work?

Yes, fireproof bags work, but only to some extent. Let us remember that anything that’s exposed to high temperatures over a period of time would eventually sustain fire damage. Fireproof bags only work up to a specific temperature level, and often only briefly. It is best to use fireproof document bags and place them inside a fireproof safe to fortify the protection of your valuables.

Are fireproof bags worth it?

Fireproof bags are worth it if you’re looking for a more durable, sturdier place to put your important documents and valuables. A fireproof bag can give you a sense of protection in that your valuables won’t be burned to ashes as easily as most fireproof document bags are made with fire-resistant materials.

Is there such a thing as a fireproof bag?

Even if we hear or read the word fireproof so many times, there is no such thing as truly fireproof . A fireproof document bag can provide added security and an extra layer of protection for your important documents, but if it is exposed to high heat for an extended period of time, your valuables can still get damaged .

We understand that choosing the right fireproof bag can overwhelming, so we hope that this list would give you ideas on what features to look for and how the best fireproof document bags on the market stack against one another.

For smaller document bags, we recommend the Mavekk Document Bag because of its incredible fire resistance and water resistance, premium construction and top-grade materials, and being lightweight and portable. It comes with a cash bag and is a good value for your money.

If you’re looking for bigger document bags with lots of storage, we think that the Shieldable 2021 TSA-Approved Fireproof Document Bag is a wonderful option. This bag has plenty of space to store important documents, it comes with a U-shape opening so you can easily put and place important items, and is highly durable thanks to multiple layers of silicone coated fiberglass it is made with, and also comes with a built-in TSA lock for extra security.

It gives us an immense sense of peace and security to have fireproof document bags to protect our valuables, but we also pray you don’t have to try to test them in a real-life fire emergency. But in any case, investing in fireproof document bags can be one of the best decisions you make today.

fire retardant travel bag

Over time even high quality lithium batteries can become unstable. Wear and tear from normal use of PEV batteries leaves them susceptible to spontaneous combustion! Electric Unicycles, E-skates, E-bikes, and many more can combust at any time. So why would you store these inside of your house without protection?

The firesak is a fire resistant bag meant to act as a storage and transportation solution for large lithium battery-powered devices., if your lithium battery randomly explodes then this bag can help keep surrounding areas safe from fire. you can also use the fireproof handles to drag the fire into a more safe location., note: the firesak is not a perfect fire solution. it is meant to act as one of your many layers of defense against lithium fires. you should not assume you are safe just because your battery is in a firesak. surrounding materials can still catch fire if not properly protected. the bag has only been tested on batteries less than 2000 watt hours. we never recommend charging batteries with known damage, defects, or water exposure..

The Best Non-Toxic Travel Cribs and Play Yards

January 16, 2023 by Shannon

Sharing is caring!

So, you’re committed to attachment parenting but… you need somewhere safe to put your baby while you shower or do any of the other million and one things we parents need to do. Play yards are great for that, as are travel cribs! And travel cribs are also a lifesaver when traveling (duh!) and even for daytime visits to friends and family. Below are the best non-toxic travel cribs for your baby.

Most travel cribs and play yards are mostly plastic, though, with PVC, waterproofing chemicals, and flame retardants. Do you have to compromise your non-toxic lifestyle just to have a safe place for your baby? No!

A handful of companies, such as Baby Bjorn, Nuna, 4moms, and Guava, make non-toxic travel cribs and non-toxic play yards that are a great choice for occasional or even everyday use. I’ll look at these in a minute, but first, here’s what to watch out for when choosing a travel crib or play yard.

Quick Navigation

What to Watch Out For in Travel Cribs or Play Yards

The majority of play yards and travel cribs are made with plastics that are filled with phthalates, bisphenol-A (BPA) and alternatives, and other toxic chemicals. Many feature polyurethane foam mattresses or padding, PVC mesh, polyester, nylon, and questionable stain-repellants, flame retardants, and waterproofing chemicals (DWRs).

Polyurethane Foam and Flame Retardants

Some companies like to boast about using plant-based foam, but let’s be honest; this is just petroleum-based foam with a little soy oil poured into the mix. These foams still hurt the environment, the people making the products, the communities living nearby, and the end-user, i.e., you and your baby.

Even when a company says they don’t use chemical flame retardants, I’m skeptical. After all, I’ve been burned before by Orbit, whose convertible car seat was not free, like they claimed, of toxic flame retardants, which I only found out by testing the foam myself and finding TDCPP, a carcinogenic chemical.

How did this happen? Well, many manufacturers don’t know if their products contain these chemicals because different batches of their materials may have been treated differently by suppliers.

Trisphosphates (TDCPP and TCPP) are still used in polyurethane mattresses and are definitely ones to avoid. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are also used as fire retardants in some products and are especially common in older products.

As such, hand-me-downs might not be the way to go for things like play yards, travel cribs, car seats, and other items that contain foam. Regulations changed in 2014 and newer baby items are less likely to have flame retardants than older items. That doesn’t mean they are all flame retardant free though!

VOCs and DWRs

Even if a travel crib or play yard is free from toxic foam and flame retardants, there are plenty of other causes for concern.

Other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can off-gas from these products thanks to commonly used varnishes, paints, plastic mesh, stain-proofing, and waterproofing (DWR) chemicals.

Durable water repellents (DWRs) are coatings added to fabrics to make them water-resistant. These are common in the base mats of play yards and travel cribs, especially those that can also be used outdoors.

Again, many textiles used in travel cribs and play yards are treated at the factory with DWRs, meaning some companies don’t even know that these chemicals are present.

DWRs are often fluoropolymers (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS) – and these are commonly thin, largely ineffective, and not actually very durable.

PFAS are toxic to humans and the environment and can affect infant birth weight, disrupt thyroid hormone levels, affect immune system activity, increase the risk of cancer, and even increase cholesterol levels.

And there’s zero need for these chemicals in the first place! Some fabrics are naturally water-repellent, and manufacturers can use silicon- and hydrocarbon-based finishes instead or increasingly popular plant-based waxes and treatments. Unfortunately, none of the companies I looked into seem to be using natural DWRs.

To figure out if a play yard or travel crib contains potentially harmful DWRs, check for third-party testing and certification to that effect and/or ask the company directly.

You may be told that the ‘non-toxic play yard’ is PFC-free, but this doesn’t mean it is free from other types of PFAS or other chemicals you’ll want to avoid. Asking what chemicals are used, rather than a shortlist of those not used, offers much more reassurance that this is a truly non-toxic travel crib or play yard.

PVC is super common in travel cribs and play yards because these almost always feature mesh and other thinner fabric components. To make PVC flexible, manufacturers often use phthalates or plasticizers.

Some phthalates, but not all, are banned in the US because of safety concerns. Still, this means that even where brands boast about adherence to Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) standards, and even say that a travel crib or play yard is ‘phthalate-safe,’ this is no guarantee it is free from all PVC and all phthalates.

PVC and phthalates have been linked to worrying health effects, including an increased risk of cancer, birth defects, and disruption of the endocrine system. And PVC production harms workers and the wider environment.

What to Look for in a Non-Toxic Travel Crib or Play Yard

There are a few key things to look for when choosing a non-toxic travel crib or non-toxic play yard. Some of these things will depend on your family’s particular needs.

For instance, you might want a travel crib that also functions as a bedside bassinet for the first few months. This means paying particular attention to the size of the travel crib and any bassinet attachments to ensure it will work in your space.

Ease of Set-Up

It’s also good to look for features such as one-handed setup. Trust me, this makes life way easier than trying to put a complicated travel crib or play yard together while also holding a squirming or sleeping infant.

If you will be moving around a lot with this travel crib, you’ll also want to pay attention to how lightweight it is. Some travel cribs weigh just 13 lbs. or so, while others can easily weigh twice as much and take up much more room. Some even come in a handy backpack, like the Guava Lotus!

Mattress Material

I’d strongly recommend looking for a travel crib without a foam mattress. Some have polyester mattresses with organic cotton covers, and these are arguably the least toxic options out there. Some travel cribs have mesh mattress layers made with polyester, nylon, and other mostly inert materials that are also better than a polyurethane foam mattress.

Certifications

It’s also good practice to look for Oeko-Tex, EcoInstitut certification, or Greenguard Gold certification. These offer some reassurance that a travel crib or play yard is mostly free of the most toxic chemicals and isn’t off-gassing excessive levels of VOCs.

These certifications don’t guarantee that a travel crib or play yard is free from polyurethane and all nasty chemicals, but they are better than nothing.

T he Best N on-Toxic Travel C ribs and Play Yards

It’s practically impossible to find a totally non-toxic travel crib or playard. After all, to keep these things lightweight and relatively affordable, companies resort to making many components from plastic materials. Still, there are some brands that avoid flame retardants, DWRs, phthalates, and most other harmful chemicals.

My top choices for non-toxic travel cribs are Nuna: the COVE Aire, SENA Aire, and SENA Aire Mini, and the Guava Lotus. There are a few key differences between these three though, so make sure to get the one that works for you!

Nuna SENA Aire Travel Crib

Black Nuna non-toxic travel crib

The Nuna SENA Aire is quite possibly the best non-toxic travel crib around. It has a simple central push/pull one-handed set-up and take-down and a bassinet attachment that snaps in to make this suitable for full-time use by your bedside and as a handy option when visiting friends and family.

The full sized SENA Aire travel crib weights 25.3 lbs. with the bassinet and 22 lbs. without. This crib has a strong aluminum frame and non-skid feet.

The SENA Aire is six inches wider than the SENA Mini and measures 41.3″L x 30″W x 29″H, making it a similar size to a regular crib. When folded up, the SENA Aire measures: 13” L x 11” W, x 31.5” H.

The SENA Aire also comes with a GOTS certified organic fitted sheet and essentially functions as a regular crib and a play yard with well-ventilated mesh on all four sides.

The SENA Aire is free of flame retardants, phthalates, lead, PVC, and BPA. It is OEKO-Tex Standard 100 certified, is made with non-toxic dyes and inks, is Greenguard Gold certified and low VOC, and the lining, sheet, and even the travel bag are machine washable.

The SENA Aire non-toxic travel crib can be used from birth to the toddler years, or until your child is 35 inches tall, 30 lbs. in weight, or 3 years old.

Nuna SENA Mini

mom setting up her Nuna non-toxic travel crib

The Nuna SENA Mini weighs just 17.5 lbs. without the bassinet attachment (a couple of pounds heavier with it) and measures 34.5″L x 24″W x 26.4″H. The Mini is a great non-toxic travel crib for smaller spaces and fairly lightweight travel. This model will only last you up until your baby is 18 months or so though as it just isn’t big enough to accommodate an older toddler.

The Mini can be opened with one hand, has an organic cotton sheet, comes with a washable travel bag, and Nuna’s famous triple layered mesh mattress and sturdy aluminum zigzag frame. The mattress panels can be removed easily for cleaning, padded edges help keep little fingers safe (and your fingers too!), and the bassinet attachment folds with the frame.

As with the other Nuna travel cribs, the SENA Mini:

  • IS OEKO-TEX® Standard 100
  • Uses non-toxic dyes and inks
  • Is UL GREENGUARD GOLD Certified.

These cribs are all screened for 10,000 problem chemicals, meaning they are some of the best non-toxic travel cribs around.

Nuna COVE Aire Go

Nuna travel crib

The COVE Aire Go was Nuna’s newest travel crib, launched in 2017, and seems like a great hybrid of the SENA Aire and the SENA Mini.

The COVE Aire Go is free of flame retardants, phthalates, lead, PVC, and BPA. It is OEKO-Tex Standard 100 certified, is made with non-toxic dyes and inks, is Greenguard Gold certified and low VOC, and the lining, sheet, and even the travel bag are machine washable.

The COVE Aire Go is a great option if you struggle to lift a baby in and out of a standard travel crib or are just looking for a crib that brings your baby closer to the height of your bed. That’s because the COVE Aire Go has a clever topper attachment that offers a secure, cozy sleep surface for naptime. The topper isn’t recommended for extended periods of sleep, nor do Nuna recommend leaving your child unattended in the crib.

Take the topper off though and you have a larger bassinet for safe sleep, meaning the COVE Aire Go could work as your full-time crib. It’s also, naturally, portable enough to take with you, giving your baby a familiar sleep environment on the go. And it folds and unfolds with just one hand! Even with the bassinet attached.

The crib is fully ventilated with mesh sides and a mesh mattress with a three-point harness and a customizable recline. It folds up quickly and easily, and it’s actually quite nice to look at, unlike many travel cribs! Like the Nuna SENA Mini, the COVE Aire is about six inches narrower than the Nuna SENA, meaning it’s great if you live in or are visiting a smaller space. The SENA Mini is also shorter and shallower though and the Nuna COVE Aire’s bassinet is positioned higher than either SENA model.

The COVE Aire has a zipper instead of the SENA’s snaps, which makes it way easier to remove. And when your baby is around 5 months or 15 lbs., you can unzip that bassinet and keep using the travel crib as a full-sized sleep or play space for up to 3 years or when your baby is 35 inches tall or 30 lbs. It also has skid-proof feet, so it won’t shuffle around.

The Nuna COVE Aire travel crib kit includes the topper, bassinet and carry bag as well as a GOTS organic cotton sheet. The mattress cover zips off and can be washed and dried in the machine.

The Nuna COVE Aire isn’t light though. It weighs in at 22 pounds and measures: 40″ L x 24.5″ W x 30″ H, making it a few pounds lighter than the SENA Aire and a few pounds heavier than the SENA Mini.

I really hope that Nuna bring back the COVE Aire as it would likely be my top choice for a non-toxic travel crib.

Guava Lotus with Bassinet

woman breaking down the Guava Lotus non-toxic travel crib

The Guava Lotus with Bassinet (sold as a separate kit) is arguably the best non-toxic travel crib to actually travel with. It weighs just 13 lbs. and fits into its own backpack!

This non-toxic travel crib works as both a full-time crib and bassinet that you can take with you to give your baby a sound night’s sleep wherever you’re going (or just for naptime at a friend’s!). The Guava Lotus is Greenguard Gold certified and all materials are free from flame retardants and phthalates, lead and other heavy metals, BPA, and other troublesome chemicals.

The bassinet is good to use up until your baby weighs 18 lbs. or can sit up. The Lotus turns into a crib or play yard super easily and measures 45” x 32” x 25” as a crib and the bassinet measures 45” x 29” x 27”.

If you’re on the shorter side or have difficulty reaching down into a crib, be aware that in crib mode the mattress is basically at floor level. This means you’ll likely need to unzip the side to get to your baby or put them down to sleep. That side zipper is nice though for if you want to lay down beside your baby and help them get to sleep.

The Guava Lotus has a sturdy but lightweight aluminum frame and comes with a thick pad and soft low VOC polyurethane foam mattress. Personally, I’d avoid using this mattress or use a barrier sheet and/or puddle pad to minimize off-gassing.

The Next Best N on-Toxic Travel C ribs and Play Yards

These travel cribs and play yards fall into the next-best category. They aren’t as non-toxic as the ones mentioned above but are still better than most on the market.

The BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light

boy standing up inside of a non-toxic travel crib

BabyBjorn’s Travel Crib Light is an easy to set up play yard and travel crib that is often touted as a non-toxic travel crib, though I’m not quite sure why. The crib fabric is 100% polyester, the mattress is made with polyurethane foam, and the mattress cover is 100% polyester on the bottom, and 50% polyester and 50% polyurethane on top.

Still, this travel crib is certified to OEKO-Tex Standard 100, and the company is at least transparent about its materials, unlike practically every other travel crib maker. The fabric and mat are also machine washable (don’t machine dry, though), and the design is sturdy but still fairly lightweight at just 13 lbs.

BabyBjorn also offers a fitted sheet made with OEKO-Tex Standard 100 (but not GOTS certified) organic cotton that has been custom-made to fit the mattress. The mattress measures 23.5 x 41 x 1.2 in, and the crib measures 32 x 44 x 24 in when opened. Folded down in carry bag, the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light measures 19 x 23.5 x 5.5 in.

There’s no bassinet attachment for this one, so it’s best for babies over five months or so and up to 3 years old. And because it sits on the floor, the limit to use is not based on your child’s weight but on whether they can climb out of the crib!

The BabyBjorn is super similar to the Guava Lotus but doesn’t have that side zipper for easy access. This means you’re going to need decent mobility and fairly long arms to safely use this travel crib (I really wouldn’t recommend this for anyone who has just had a C section! And while the BabyBjorn does come with a carry bag this is not as convenient as the Guava Lotus back pack type travel bag.

4moms Breeze GO

boy standing inside of grey travel crib

The 4moms Breeze GO is a super simple to use travel crib and play yard that you only need one hand to open and close. It has a cushioned polyurethane mattress that is water resistant thanks to a polyester cover (confirmed through email). The crib has mesh sides (likely made from nylon) for good visibility and ventilation.

This travel crib is made with steel and nylon, among other materials, and does not come with sheets, unlike the Nuna cribs.

At first glance there isn’t much to differentiate the 4moms travel cribs as non-toxic. However, according to the company, the Breeze GO travel crib is tested for and is free from phthalates, lead, flame retardants, and formaldehyde.

Like the Nuna SENA Aire and COVE Aire, the Breeze GO can be used from birth to 30 lbs. or 35 inches. It is similar in size to the SENA Aire, measuring 43″ L x 30″ W x 29″ H open and 12.25″ L x 12.75″ W x 29″ H when closed with the mattress. It weighs 23 lbs. and comes with a 1-year manufacturer’s warranty.

Take note that the change table and bassinet associated with the Breeze Plus crib are not compatible with the Breeze GO play yard. This travel crib doesn’t come with sheets but only fits the Breeze sheets which are sold by the company and are made with a polyester blend and unspecified waterproof backing.

4moms Breeze PLUS

black non-toxic travel crib

The Breeze PLUS travel crib is also made with a polyurethane foam mattress with a polyester cover that is water resistant. It is free from phthalates, lead, flame retardants, and formaldehyde, but the company did not confirm that it is free from BPA and BPS, or PVC, nor that it is made with non-toxic dyes and inks as claimed over at The Tot.

The Breeze PLUS has a full-size bassinet and flip-top changer, making it a good choice for smaller spaces and travel. You can open and close it easily with one hand, and it can be used from birth to 30 lbs., with the bassinet and changer suitable for use from birth to 18 lbs.

The Breeze bassinet mattress measures 29″ x 23″ x 0.5″. When open, the Breeze PLUS measures

43″ L x 30″ W x 29″ H. When closed with the mattress, it measures 12.25″ L x 12.75″ W x 29″ H. The Breeze PLUS weighs 23 lbs. without the bassinet and changer and 28.5 lbs. with both.

The Breeze PLUS also has a 1-year manufacturer’s warranty and the company offers a diaper storage caddy that is compatible with all models of the Breeze playards.

Take note that the flip changer portion does not fit into the travel bag with the play yard, and you’ll have to carry this separately, which seems inconvenient. This travel crib doesn’t come with sheets but only fits the Breeze sheets which are sold by the company and are made with a polyester blend and unspecified waterproof backing.

Because the Breeze travel cribs got a seal of approval from The Tot, I contacted the company to ask more about their materials and processes. Unfortunately, The Tot’s claims that these travel cribs were free from polyurethane and several other toxic chemicals didn’t hold up, but the 4moms travel cribs are marginally better than most other options out there, which is why I’ve still included them here.

Non-Toxic Play Yards

I didn’t find a single play yard (not a travel crib) that I can recommend as even approaching non-toxic. So, if you’re looking for something a bit bigger for your baby to crawl around in and not necessarily to sleep, your best bet is likely an old-fashioned wooden or metal baby gate to close off a small space in your home and a non-toxic organic rug to cushion the floor.

The Toddleroo by North States 3-in-1 Superyards is another good option, with multiple configurations available. These are made with either metal (steel with powder coating) or wood .

Final Thoughts on Non-Toxic Travel Cribs

Travel cribs and play yards are an absolute godsend for busy parents (aren’t all parents busy!?), but there are shockingly few companies making a genuine effort to offer non-toxic travel cribs. However, the brands above are making non-toxic travel cribs you can feel good about.

Before I wrap up, just a quick note to say that even a non-toxic travel crib has to be used properly to ensure safety. This typically means only using a bassinet attachment or level up to 15 or 18 lbs. or so and stopping using the play yard or crib entirely once your child is 35 inches tall or weighs more than 30 lbs. (unless the play yard does not have weight limit because it sits flush to the floor). Make sure to check the specifications for any product you buy as some models differ.

Are Sleeping Bags Flammable or Fire-Retardant?

Knowing whether your sleeping bag can catch fire is important for your safety while camping. Fire outbreaks remain a major risk while outdoors, and the best way to minimize it is by choosing fire-retardant gear.

So, let’s explore how flammable sleeping bags are and what makes them fire-retardant.

Article Contents:

What are Sleeping Bags Made From?

North american sleeping bag flammability guidelines.

  • How Far Away Should You Sleep from a Fire?

How to Repair a Sleeping Bag Burn Hole

Sleeping tent inside sleeping bag sleeping pad keep warm tent

A sleeping bag is made from three distinct layers: an outer layer, inner layer, and fill material.

The outer layer or shell of the sleeping bag is made from nylon, polyester, taffeta, ripstop nylon/polyester, or DryLoft material. Most sleeping bags are coated with a layer of DWR (Durable Water Repellent) to repel moisture and combat condensation.

The interior layer or the lining comes in materials such as nylon, synthetic, cotton, or poly-cotton.

The fill materials, which is responsible for providing insulation is typically made from natural (down, cotton, or wool) or synthetic (poly fibre) fibres.

It is the weave and weight of the outer layer that plays a key role in your sleeping bag flammability. Moreover, constant exposure to heat and flames can make any material catch fire – hence not ‘fireproof’ [ Reference ].

Sleeping bags labeled “fire-retardant” don’t necessarily mean “fireproof”. Most of them have chemicals applied over them to resist fire. But, you will also find sleeping bag fire-resistant options without chemicals as they are considered safer for use.

Are Down-Filled Sleeping Bags Flammable?

Down-filled sleeping bags are not considered flammable. Down is actually considered on of the least flammable bedding materials and will show a significant resistance to fire [ Reference ].

However, as mentioned previously, it is the outer material that will dictate the sleeping bag flammability. Tightly woven synthetic fibres don’t ignite easily. Instead they melt and create a burn hole when caught on fire.

Are Synthetic-Filled Sleeping Bags Flammable?

Synthetic-filled sleeping bags have a low flammability rating. Synthetic fill like poly-fiber needs more heat to ignite. When on fire these materials can melt unless they are specially treated to resist fire.

Again, the shell material is a decisive factor of sleeping bag flammability.

bonfire campfire firewood camping

Both the U.SA and Canada have similar guidelines regarding sleeping bag flammability. While some regions don’t mandate it as legislation, the flammability comes under the general safety requirements of camping.

Manufacturers are advised to comply with these guidelines in order to ensure their product is safe for users.

Why are Sleeping Bags Tested for Flammability?

Sleeping bags come in a variety of materials and it can impact their level of flammability. They can accelerate the fire and even remain as an obstacle to escape during fire outbreaks. This is why it’s important to purchase one that has passed the sleeping bag flammability test.

Testing conditions state that a sleeping bag should not exceed a burn rate of 15 centimetres per minute .

How are Sleeping Bags Tested?

In Canada, the Standard Test Method for Flammability of Sleeping Bags ( ASTM F1955-20 ) tests the burn rate of sleeping bag materials. The American equivalent is the Rate of Burn Standard for Sleeping Bags (CPAI-75:1976A).

A sample of the sleeping bag material is set on fire under specified conditions. The burn rate is denoted in centimeters per minute, and the products that comply with the burn rate requirements will be labeled as such to help buyers identify them.

Both the fabric and coatings of sleeping bags play a role in their fire-retardant ability. For this reason, burn rates are tested both before and after sleeping bags are laundered according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • Washing or dry-cleaning sleeping bags multiple times may increase their flammability as the protective coating can wear out

They are even tested following tight storage conditions which might impact the rate of fire spreading.

How Far Away Should You Sleep From a Fire?

sleeping bag fire distance camping safety

Although it might be tempting to pitch your tent or move your sleeping bag closer to the fire during cooler nights, it’s not a good idea. The hot embers and sparks from a camp fire can easily land in your direction. Fire size, type of wood, and wind conditions can also exacerbate the risk.

In general, you should never leave a fire unattended. Even a semi-extinguished fire can pose a considerable hazard.

  • Maintain a minimum distance of 3 meters (10 feet) between the campfire and your sleeping bag
  • If it’s a large fire and the weather conditions are unfavourable, maintain at least 6 meters (20 feet) away

sleeping bag repair tenacious tape burn hole damage

If an ember lands on your sleeping bag and leaves a sizable hole it can cause the insulating material to come out over time.

So, here’s a first-aid measure to prevent further damage and how to repair your sleeping bag. I recommend using Tenacious Tape Repair Patches . The repair process is fairly easy and straightforward.

Here’s how to repair a small hole in a sleeping bag:

  • Locate the hole and prepare it by trimming the edge of any loose fibre filaments if necessary
  • If there’s any debris or moisture near the hole, clean it with water and a cloth then let it dry
  • Insert any fill materials that has come out of the hole
  • Place the tenacious repair tape over the hole, and smooth the edges to eliminate any air bubbles and creases

It’s also important to consider bonus features, like pockets and organizational compartments, and, as Sanz notes, “A crucial function is to ensure that you’re able to hang your garment bag when you arrive at your destination, so that you can prepare your outfits as easily as possible and to ensure that all your clothes are crisp.” Keeping all this in mind, we found the 12 best travel garment bags out there today. Once you start using one of these, you’re never going to go back.

MZ Wallace’s signature quilting isn’t limited to the brand’s totes, appearing here in garment bag form. The thin design is extremely lightweight, ideal for quick trips when you need to bring one to three outfits. There is even an exterior pocket for bonus storage.

Dimensions: 22" × 3" × 39"

Materials: Oxford, leather

What reviewers are saying: “I have been interested in a MZ Wallace garment bag for a while. It is perfect! Just right proportions and size. Thoughtful design and construction details.”

Tumi always delivers premium luggage that will last you over a decade, and this garment bag is no exception. Sanz says: “It’s foldable, with a sturdy handle for easy carrying, making it convenient and compact for every type of travel. I also love that it has several zipper pockets, so I can pack my toiletries and other travel essentials all in one bag. When I arrive at my destination, I hang it in the closet and I know that I will be ready to go.”

Dimensions: 15" x 22" x 6"

Materials: Ballistic nylon

What reviewers are saying: “This bag stores so much for a carry on. I was able to comfortably fit 2 suits and more for a destination wedding!”

This duffel has been receiving high praise ever since its release. A few of the reasons it’s so popular: The duffel is carry-on friendly, water-resistant, and has interior and exterior pockets. And those are only a few of its distinguishing features. Choose an original or compact size for the style that suits your needs.

Dimensions: 22" x 12" x 12"

Materials: Polyester

What reviewers are saying: “The Garment Duffel is a great purchase, especially for anyone in an industry that takes short frequent trips. I was actually able fit quite a bit more clothes than I had anticipated. Took the bag to work and my company bought 20 of them to give to customers. Great purchase.”

Longchamp’s iconic nylon and leather trim takes on a garment bag silhouette. The two-tone design exudes sophistication, with practical touches like a top carry handle, built-in hanger, and front zip pocket.

Dimensions: 23.25" x 41.25"

Materials: Nylon, leather

What reviewers are saying: “I bought this as a gift for my boyfriend who travels a lot and needed a nice garment bag particularly for his suits. This bag is perfect! It fits his suit as well as a few extra shirts. The fabric is an amazing, durable quality, and the leather details make this product look incredible.”

This garment bag is actually designed to fit inside of your carry-on, rather than serving as a stand-alone piece. The water-resistant exterior protects against spills, and exterior zip pockets hold small accessories. It gets the job done, while taking up the least possible amount of space.

Dimensions: 40" x 19"

What reviewers are saying: “I use this bag when I need to workout at work. I go from a suit to athleticwear in minutes.”

Looking for an affordable option that is available ASAP? Amazon’s garment bag holds up to three suits or dresses and boasts multiple zipper compartments.

Dimensions: 40" x 4" x 20.5"

What reviewers are saying: “I bought this bag in 2019 and it has held up incredibly well since then, performs all functions advertised at a great price value. I have taken it on many flights, buses and train rides and have never had an issue with fitting it in the overhead bin on both longer-haul flights and short budget-airline carriers.”

Hartmann’s garment bag adds contemporary touches to an otherwise traditional design. The result? A chic, useful travel accessory that will stand the test of time. The padded shoulder strap and multiple interior pockets enhance the convenience of this style.

Materials: Nylon

What reviewers are saying: “Hartmann was an anniversary gift from my work place, and I am still proud to own it 35 years later.”

Mark & Graham Commuter 2-in-1 Garment Bag

Dimensions: 20.5" x 24" x 9.5"

What reviewers are saying: “It’s easy to maneuver and overall great quality and very neat design (many compartments and zippered areas).”

For golfers and non-golfers alike, Stitch makes a duffel that is water- and stain-resistant, and includes a hanger hook, shoulder strap, elastic shoe pockets, and webbed handles. You can even get it customized with your initials.

Dimensions: 22.5" x 11.5" x 12"

What reviewers are saying: “Love it! Fits into the airplane overhead bin, no trouble bringing it along as a carry-on bag. Very sturdy, zippers are tough enough. Shoulder strap is removable. My suit arrived in top shape using this garment bag. Highly recommended.”

The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro

2 Comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Cities , Travel , Video

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.
