Met pijn in ons hart delen we jullie mede dat De Foodstoet stopt te bestaan! Na 7 jaar ontzettend veel plezier te hebben beleefd aan het project en ook aan jullie als trouwe bezoekers, hebben we besloten De Foodstoet niet meer voort te zetten.

Door de huidige marktsituatie is het risicoprofiel van De Foodstoet dusdanig veranderd dat we dit besluit hebben moeten nemen. We organiseren De Foodstoet naast onze draaiende bedrijven en banen en daar hebben we het ook steeds drukker mee waardoor we onvoldoende tijd kunnen besteden aan De Foodstoet om een weerwoord te bieden op het risico.

Daarmee is De Foodstoet stil komen te staan.

Geen rijdende trucks meer – geen gezelligheid meer – geen zweet op het voorhoofd meer omdat we soms toch echt wel hard moesten werken- geen legendarische bands meer- geen toffe bomvolle middagen…

Maar wel een enorme bak vol eindeloos mooie herinneringen van talloze waardevolle momenten die we samen hebben beleefd. We zeggen daarom met trots en met een opgeheven hoofd vaarwel.

Restaurant 1397 is de nieuwe naam van restaurant Hemingway in Grand Hotel en Résidence De Draak in Bergen op Zoom. Het restaurant, dat is gevestigd in het oudste hotel van Nederland, heeft per 6 september 2021 een nieuwe plek gekregen in een prachtig historisch kader, waarbij het culinaire niveau verder wordt verhoogd. De nieuwe naam refereert aan 1397, het jaar waarin De Draak met zekerheid al als horecabedrijf bestond.

Hotel-restaurant Stadspark

Aan de rand van het groene stadspark van Bergen-op-Zoom kun je het hotel en restaurant Stadspark vinden. De locatie is fantastisch. Het is een kleine tien minuten lopen naar de binnenstad, waar je heerlijk kunt genieten van de Brabantse gezelligheid.

Maar daarmee houdt het niet op. Het Scheldestrand bevindt zich namelijk op een steenworp afstand en vanuit het restaurant heb je een fantastisch uitzicht op de Binnenschelde.  

In het sfeervolle en moderne restaurant kun je genieten van een uitgebreide lunch of een heerlijk en smaakvol diner. Wil je alleen langskomen voor een drankje of een cocktail, na een mooie wandeling in het park bijvoorbeeld? Dan kun je terecht in de strak ingerichte brasserie. Voor ieder wat wils!

't Geheim van Bergen

Bij 't Geheim van Bergen staat puur kwaliteits eten op de eerste plaats. Met vlees van de eigen boerderij krijg je het nergens anders beter! Ze zijn dan ook heel trots op hun eigen vlees! De dieren lopen vrij rond en dat proef je!

Wanneer je geen tijd hebt om uitgebreid te dineren in het restaurant, kun je ook de ingrediënten halen in de boerderijwinkel. Zo mis je nooit het beste lekkerste gerecht!

Havenkwartier

Bergen op Zoom was ooit een bloeiende havenstad aan de Westerschelde. Dat kun je nog goed zien aan de oude pakhuizen waarmee Bergen versierd is. Één van deze pakhuizen is het Havenkwartier, aan de Zuidzijde Haven. Het oude pakhuis is het perfecte decor om lekker te genieten van de lekkerste gerechten en wijnen!  

Bij het Havenkwartier is het eten en drinken elke dag een verrassing. Vooral doordat de chefs met seizoensgebonden streekproducten werken. Hierdoor kun je iedere dag iets anders op je bord verwachten!

Het restaurant beschikt over een groot terras waar je zomers nog lang kunt genieten. Niet te vergeten is de sfeer binnen ook perfect om te dineren, en wordt je even meegenomen in de geschiedenis van het pand. Alles werkt samen voor de belevenis van een heerlijk avondje uit!

Bij Oase kun je terecht voor de goede dingen van het leven. Bijzondere lunchgerechten, mooie wijnen en Amerikaans craftbeer. Hier voelt iedereen zich direct thuis. Al kom je voor een rustig kopje koffie en de krant, lekker bij te kletsen met je vrienden en vriendinnen, of gezellig avondje met je familie. Alles is mogelijk!  

Oase ligt in een gezellig straatje, vlak bij de Grote Markt. Het lichte interieur en de grote glazen pui, maakt Oase een aanlokkelijk plekje. Nee, dit is geen fata morgana!

Dineren in een ongedwongen sfeer. Dat is wat eigenaren Donny en Roos voor ogen hebben, als ze jou in de watten komen leggen! Het doet ook zeker eer aan de naam, want hier kun je genieten in alle rust, Oase!

Gastrobar De Moor

Gezelligheid, warmte, en gastronomie. Dit alles kan je mee maken bij Gastrobar De Moor in Bergen op Zoom. Geniet in de aangrenzende stadstuin, of op het terras op de Grote Markt. En laat je verassen door kunsten van de chef, gepaard met heerlijke wijnen. 

Stadsbrasserie Thalia

In de Romeinse mythologie, is Thalia de dochter van Bacchus, de God van de wijn. Vanzelfsprekend kom je Bij Stadsbrasserie Thalia helemaal tot rust en geniet je van vele geluksmomenten. Met de prachtige locatie midden in het centrum van Bergen op Zoom kun je hier heerlijk genieten.  

Of je nou aan het shoppen bent of aan het slenteren door de stad, bij Thalia ben je altijd welkom! Lekker zitten. Kopje koffie. Biertje. Wijntje. Tapasplankje. Want heel veel meer is niet nodig, om je gelukzalig te voelen.  

Het is er altijd gezellig en je kunt er terecht voor een uitgebreid diner, bedrijfsborrel of zelfs een high wine! Kortom iedereen is hier welkom!

De Gouverneur

Restaurant de Gouverneur opende haar deuren in het jaar 2023 en heeft zo de bewoners van Bergen op Zoom rijker gemaakt met een restaurant die geeft om vakmanschap en beleving.Het restaurant ligt gelegen in de Bergse binnenstad met uitzicht op de dikke boom, die zo'n anderhalve eeuw geleden geplant is en de bekende peperbus. De locatie van De Gouverneur heeft een rijke geschiedenis. De locatie is een rijksmonument dat was begonnen als gouvernementshuis en toen werd omgebouwd naar een Latijnse school in de 16e eeuw. Toen de school niet meer in gebruik was werd het gebouw gebruikt als militair hospitaal en vervolgens de plek voor de administratieve diensten van defensie. Hierna is het gebouw ook gebruikt als bankkantoor en sportschool maar nu is het tijd voor dit sfeervolle restaurant. Bij de Gouverneur kan je terecht voor bites,lunch en diner en als je dit doet moet je zeker de beste taco van Nederland op basis van soft shell krab proeven. Als voorgerecht een kreeftensoep en voor het hoofdgerecht de specialiteit van de chef, de gebakken scheermesjes met Thaise vinaigrette en botersaus. Hierna sluit je je diner af met een dessert zoals de Italiaanse klassieker.  

Bravoure, gelegen bij de Spiritustoren in Bergen op Zoom, is een nieuw en sfeervol restaurant dat zich onderscheidt door zijn focus op verrukkelijke steaks en eerlijke producten van lokale boeren. The best things to do in 24 hours in Bergen op Zoom, The Netherlands

Bergen op Zoom is a small city in the province of Noord- Brabant, The Netherlands, and has around 50.000 inhabitants. Historians think that Bergen op Zoom obtained its city rights somewhere between 1198 and 1212. The exact time is unsure because there was a big fire that demolished almost the entire city back in 1397. But because the oldest reference to Bergen op Zoom as a city dates back to 1213, people think this beautiful city in Noord-Brabant got its city rights in the beginning of the 13th century.

One of the things that Bergen op Zoom is famous for is its food, but also for carnaval. The tower of the Gertrudiskerk (church) of Bergen op Zoom is dressed up as a doll with colourful clothes. And the name changes from Bergen op Zoom, to Krabbegat.

Inspire Coffee

There are quite a few nice breakfast cafes and restaurants in Bergen op Zoom, but my favourite has to be Inspire Coffee. Not only do you have a great view on the so-called Peperbus (the tower of the Sint-Gertrudis church), it is located in the centre of Bergen op Zoom. They offer a simple, but nice breakfast. And they even have glutenfree or lactose free options for breakfast, lunch and their lattes. Don’t forget to buy some of the homemade cakes. But be aware, not all of them are home-made, but most of them are. And they are to die for!

Self guided walking tour through Bergen op Zoom

We start our walking tour through Bergen op Zoom from inspire Coffee. Walk in the direction of Kremerstraat 20A , then continue your walk to Sint-Catharinaplein 2 . From there you head towards one of the most beautiful streets of Bergen op Zoom, Engelsestraat 19 . After you visited and walked there, you should continue towards Blauwehandstraat 9 and then walk to Zuivelplein 2A . Start walking in the direction of Koevoetstraat 23 , afterwards you have to continue to the Synagoge of Bergen op Zoom.

After the synagoge you will walk to Hoogstraat 7 , continue to Kerkstraat 1 and then you will walk to see the main church of Bergen op Zoom. The Gertrudiskerk (kerk means church) can be found on the Grote Markt. You can climb the tower of this church in Bergen op Zoom, called De Peperbus. In 2019 from the 27th of April until the 31st of October from Thursday – Sunday 13:00 – 16:00. So I would recommend you to climb the tower of the church either before or after the Grebbe tour. Other buildings you have to see when you’re on the Grote Markt are the Stadhuis (city hall) and Hotel De Draak .

Hotel De Draak is the oldest hotel and company in The Netherlands and has offered accommodation to visitors for over 600 years already! It is also housed in one of the oldest buildings of Bergen op Zoom and dates back to at least the 13th century. Another fun fact about Hotel De Draak in Bergen op Zoom is that it’s one of the only buildings that survived the destructive city fire of 1397. Almost the entire city burned down, except for two buildings. De Draak and De Olifant (the building next to De Draak).

After enjoying the beautiful surroundings of Bergen op Zoom on the Grote Markt, you have to walk to Theater De Maagd.  Continue your free city tour through Bergen op Zoom via Fortuinstraat 5 , Potterstraat 22 , Lievevrouwestraat 9 , to end up at the most beautiful monument of Bergen op Zoom. The Gevangenpoort (or prisoner gate) is the oldest monument of Bergen op Zoom and dates back to the 14th century. It is also the only city gate that is still left in Bergen op Zoom.

Now walk towards Rijkebuurtstraat 9, Zuidzijde Haven 7 and Noordzijde Haven 22 . Although I can definitely recommend you to walk a little bit further, up until the canal starts. It’s pretty beautiful there. After that you walk via Dubbelstraat 57, Dubbelstraat 4, Moeregrebstraat 86 to the Arsenaal . The Arsenaal of Bergen op Zoom was built in 1764 and transformed into barracks in 1880.

Then you walk via Steenbergsestraat 9 , to end up at the most important monument and museum of Bergen op Zoom. The Markiezenhof . More about this city palace in The Netherlands can be found a few paragraphs below.

The Markiezenhof

The Markiezenhof is the oldest city palace of The Netherlands and incredibly beautiful. This city palace in Bergen op Zoom is located in the historical heart of one of the most beautiful cities of The Netherlands. The building dates back to the late middle ages. Within the Markiezenhof you can find several things, not only is the VVV (tourism office) of Bergen op Zoom located here, but there is also a museum that is worth a visit.

In the Markiezenhof museum you will discover the history of Bergen op Zoom and its region, the Markiezen, rooms completely in the style of the middle ages and plenty of more. There is also a large permanent exhibition on the history of fairs, which is cute and interesting to see. You will also find temporary exhibitions that will often feature local artists.

Accessibility

As the Markiezenhof dates back to the Middle Ages, the building is restricted to wheelchair users and disabled people. The ground floor and French garden are completely accessible. There’s an elevator to the first floor, where most rooms are also accessible. The second floor, and some rooms of the first floor, are unfortunately not accessible for wheelchair users and disabled people.

What I love about Cafe Helene is that it’s small and located in a bookstore, named Quist. When you enter the bookstore you have no idea that there’s a cute and very good cafe located upstairs, but you have to check it out. Not only do they have very tasty cakes, but you will find that the food they offer at Cafe Helene in Bergen op Zoom are perfect for a nice lunch. Not to mention that the staff is so nice and it’s a perfect way to discover and buy new books.

Brownies & Downies

Another fun place to get lunch in Bergen op Zoom is Brownies & Downies. This lunch restaurant in Bergen op Zoom is run by people with disabilities and offers a great lunch in a cosy spot. The people are friendly, the food if good and the atmosphere is very warm and welcoming. Combine that with its location and a building that is one big open space with big windows, and you won’t want to leave.

The Old Bakery is also a cute lunch spot that has the best high tea of Bergen op Zoom.

Discover the Grebbe below the city of Bergen op Zoom

The Grebbe is a restored waterway and sewage system. It was dug in the 13th century. Mainly to transport peat to the harbour of Bergen op Zoom. Painters, tanners and other craftsmen took water that they needed from the Grebbe for their work and later on beer brewers did the same.

But with work there comes waste. And this was also dumped in the Grebbe, not only by craftsmen but also by the ever growing population of Bergen op Zoom. You can visit the largest monument of Bergen op Zoom with a guide from Stichting Bezichtiging Monumenten. Nowadays only the rainwater from Bergen op Zoom comes in here, so when it rains hard no tours are given. The tours will be given in 2019 on every Saturday from the 27th of April until the 26th of October at 13:00 and at 15:00.

For more information or to book a tour on the day itself (it’s possible that it’s full or that there is still a spot left) you can go to the Tourist Office of Bergen op Zoom, that can be found inside the city palace.

Buy some typical souvenirs in Bergen op Zoom

Bergen op Zoom is a city that is known for its Bourgondian food. This city has its own specialties and one of them has to be bought as a souvenir. Bergen op Zoom has some traditional cakes and cookies. And one of them is this kind of pudding cookie that is called ‘platte tieten’, or (literal translation) flat boobs. For the real platte tieten you’d have to visit Bakker Groffen . You can usually find the platte tieten in different colours and with different toppings.

When you visit the market of Bergen op Zoom (every Thursday around the Wouwsestraat, Van der Rijtstraat, Stationsstraat, Korenbeursplein), you have to buy worstenbroodjes as well. These are traditional for the province of Noord- Brabant and it’s a sausage inside bread. But so much better than you can imagine.

When you’re visiting Bergen op Zoom during the asparagus season (end of April – end of June) you have to buy some fresh one from the market as well. Together with strawberries, but these will arrive a little bit later on the market. Bergen op Zoom is well known for it’s three A’s: Asperges, Aardbeien & Anjovis, or asparagus, strawberries & anjovis. That’s why you should at least buy one thing of that list.

Eat dinner at one of the best restaurants of Bergen op Zoom

There are plenty of great restaurants to be found in Bergen op Zoom. So if you’re looking for great places to go for dinner in Bergen op Zoom, then you’re in the right place. I’ve included two great restaurants below, but of course there are plenty of other great places to eat in Bergen op Zoom.

‘t Zusje

If you’re interested in eating and discovering some of the food of several continents, then you’ll love ‘t Zusje. They serve tapas from several European and Asian countries. And the food is, in my opinion, very good. Although I know some people who don’t like different flavour combinations. I personally am a huge fan of discovering new flavours. Be aware that this restaurant is very busy, especially during the weekends. So if you want to dine here during the weekend, I can recommend you to reserve a spot up front. What I also love is that there are a lot of vegetarian options in this restaurant in Bergen op Zoom, not to mention that the staff is very nice.

‘t Geheim van Bergen

Another great restaurant in Bergen op Zoom is ‘t Geheim van Bergen. They have a relatively small menu, which is something that makes choosing way easier. The restaurant itself is ver nice, but what I mainly love is that this restaurant works together with local farmers to get the best ingredients for their customers. And that is something you can taste. I would recommend you to at least take the asparagus and the oysters at this restaurant as those are the most local and traditional dishes that you can get. With oysters from the province of Zeeland and asparagus from just outside of Bergen op Zoom.

Retire your day in Bergen op Zoom with a drink

Oase is a restaurant in Bergen op Zoom, but I think it’s a great location for a drink as well. Get to the basement or outside on the terrace, order a wine or one of their greats beers and just enjoy the final hours of your day in Bergen op Zoom.

Biercafe ‘t Locomotiefke

The best cafe of Bergen op Zoom is in my opinion Biercafe ‘t Locomotiefke. Not only is is a typical and authentic Brabants (the province where Bergen op Zoom is located) cafe, but they have the best beer of Bergen op Zoom. They have lots of different craft beers and it’s the best place in Bergen op Zoom to go for drinks.

There are many other unusual things you can do in Bergen op Zoom and its surroundings. With these tips below it’s easy to stay one weekend in Bergen op Zoom. Or if you have already visited Bergen op Zoom for 24 hours or longer, then I hope these activities make it on your Bergen op Zoom bucketlist. Discover Noord- Brabant at its best!

Estate Mattemburgh

Just South of Bergen op Zoom you will find Landgoed Mattemburgh. This estate is surrounded by one of the best preserved gardens of The Netherlands. The estate was founded by a major of Bergen op Zoom, called Petrus Cuypers. His son, Louis, created the gardens. The major named the estate after his mom, Maria van Mattemburgh. As of now the 400 hectares is owned by Brabants Landschap. The forest at the Eastern side of the A58 is the oldest forest reserve of The Netherlands. The best time to visit Estate Mattemburgh is between June and mid-October, as many plants are blooming, which makes the area more magical.

You will discover both English and French styled gardens. You can also find restaurant De Orangerie here when you’re in need of some refreshments and food. The park of the estate and the gardens are opened when the De Orangerie is opened.

Fort de Roovere

Fortress De Roovere is the largest fortress of the West-Brabantse waterlinie and is located 4,6 km from Bergen op Zoom. It was restored back in 2010 and is mainly famous for the Mozes bridge. The Mozus bridge is located in the water, but when you walk over it, your feet stay dry. The entrance of the fortress is located at the Ligneweg, however pedestrians can enter the fortress via the Mozesbrug which is located on the Eastern side of the restored fortress. Don’t forget to climb to the top of the newly built tower for the best view of this fortress in Noord- Brabant, The Netherlands.

On the last Sunday of May you will find demonstrations on Fortress De Roovere. You will discover how the fortress looked like during the 80-year war against the Spanish.

Visit Halsteren and estate De Hertgang

In Halsteren you can also visit the estate called De Hertgang. They have beautiful gardens that are opened during the summer. Click here for the opening times of estate De Hertgang. The green dates mean that it’s opened from 13:00 – 17:00 and there is a tour with a guide at 14:00. The red data means that the gardens open from 11:00 – 17:00 and there is a tour with a guide at 14:00. The entry fee to the gardens of the estate is 4 euros.

Relax in a park 

Bergen op Zoom isn’t home to many parks, whether that’s because there are many estates and forests in the surroundings of the city or not, it’s a fact. But if you want to relax in a park in Bergen op Zoom, then you have to bring a visit to the Anton van Duinkerken park. It’s not the biggest, but it will definitely help you relax at least a little.

Get your tan on at the beach

While the centre of Bergen op Zoom doesn’t lay next to the beach, a little walk towards the Western part of the city will lead you to the beach of Bergen op Zoom. So whether you’re interested to explore the beach, or just want to cool down during the hot days, visiting the beach in this beautiful Dutch city is always a good idea.

Visit the local market in Bergen op Zoom

When I’m visiting a new city I love it when I planned it accordingly, so that I can visit one of the weekly markets. Every Thursday from 09:00 – 16:00 you can find a market in the centre of Bergen op Zoom. The market is held around the Wouwsestraat, Van Der Rijtstraat, Stationsstraat and on the Korenbeursplein (square).

Buy the freshest cheese, stroopwafels, bread, fish, meat, clothing, fabrics and plenty of other things. Don’t forget to buy one of the three AAA’s during their season.

Explore the food festival in Bergen op Zoom 

Every last weekend of May there is an amazing food festival in Bergen op Zoom, called ProefMei. During this time of the year you can order the entire AAA menu (strawberries, anjovis & asparagus) and the whole town is celebrating. You will find music, dancing, many stalls with bites and plenty of more. The festival is held around the Markiezenhof (city palace) in Bergen op Zoom. So, if you happen to visit Bergen op Zoom during the last weekend of May, make sure to visit this festival.

Eat freshly harvested food in the middle of asparagus fields

This is one of the best experiences you can have in the surroundings of Bergen op Zoom. Every year there’s a pop-up restaurant created in the village of Wouw. You will eat your lunch or dinner in the middle of asparagus fields. The restaurant is opened for only three weeks. This is the time period that the white asparagus are harvested. In Dutch we call them ‘het witte goud’, or the white gold.

From the second weekend of May until the first weekend of June you can have the best asparagus dishes of The Netherlands in Wouw. The chefs make the white and green asparagus taste even more heavenly than they normally do. You can reserve a spot, most often, from the first Monday or Tuesday of January. But be aware, many people are interested in those tickets.

Lunch is served between 11:30 and 14:30. Dinner is served between 17:00 and 21:00. The restaurant itself is opened until 23:00. A three course meal is 30 euros and a 4 course meal 37,50. Keep in mind that this is the price of 2019.

How to get to Bergen op Zoom, The Netherlands

Bergen op Zoom is home to a train station and other forms of public transport. The city is easy to reach from the train station of Bergen op Zoom, as you walk straight from the train station into the centre.

From Amsterdam : If you’re looking at travelling to Bergen op Zoom from Amsterdam by train, I would recommend you to take the direct intercity train from Amsterdam central train station in the direction of Vlissingen. Get out at Bergen op Zoom. This will take you around 2:10 hours.

From Utrecht :  To get from Utrecht to the city of Bergen op Zoom by train you’d have to change trains at least once. Take the train from Utrecht Centraal in the direction of Rotterdam Centraal. Change at Rotterdam Centraal to the intercity in the direction of Vlissingen. Get out at Bergen op Zoom train station. This will take you around 1:42 hours.

From Middelburg :  Although Middelburg is a beautiful city that is worth a visit, so is Bergen op Zoom. It’s very easy to visit Bergen op Zoom on a day trip from Middelburg. Take the intercity train in the direction of Amsterdam Centraal from Middelburg train station. Get out at Bergen op Zoom. This will take you around 43 minutes.

Bergen op Zoom can be visited as a day trip from Eindhoven , Tilburg, Breda, Den Bosch and other cities. However, I always recommend you to spend the night in a city. This way you are able to completely discover the city, during every moment of the day. Bergen op Zoom is a beautiful Dutch city in Noord- Brabant that can be visited during spring, summer, autumn and winter. No matter what time of the year it is, Bergen op Zoom is beautiful. However, keep in mind that autumn and winter are low season. Thus, the places you can visit in Bergen op Zoom and the landmarks are mostly opened for a shorter time.

A Perfect Day Trip To Bergen Op Zoom, Netherlands

A day trip to Bergen op Zoom? What do you think about it? What? Never heard about it?

No worries, me neither! At least, not before a friend of mine told me about a friend of her, who were in Bergen op Zoom the other day and that it should be a charming little town and perfect for a day out if you don´t want to stay at home but can´t travel too far! 

So, my friend and I took the car and drove about two hours (from my hometown Düsseldorf ) into the Netherlands and had a fantastic day in this beautiful town.

A Perfect Day Trip To Bergen Op Zoom

I didn´t know anything about the town except what my friend told me. A friend of hers visited Bergen op Zoom a few times already, and she loved it. Because of that, the next Saturday, I grabbed my best friend, and we drove over to the Netherlands.

Facts About Bergen Op Zoom

Bergen op Zoom is a beautiful and historic city, with about 66 000 inhabitants, a lot of monumental buildings, plenty of shopping opportunities, and many chances to fuel your body and soul with delicious food and drinks.

Where Is Bergen Op Zoom

The city is located in the Dutch province of North-Brabant and on the border of the neighboring province Zeeland.

The closest cities are Rotterdam and Antwerp, but also from Amsterdam ; it´s only a short drive. However, as the Netherlands is a pretty small country, everything around is pretty close. Even from the western parts of Germany, like Düsseldorf , it´s only a two hours drive.

Also, Bergen op Zoom lies on the hills of the Brabantse Wal, which is surrounded by the river Schelde and the sea. With loads of historic estates and natural reserves, this area is an ideal spot for hiking enthusiasts and nature lovers.

How To Get To Bergen Op Zoom

The easiest way to visit Bergen op Zoom is probably going by car. Whether with your own or a rental car like I did, as I don´t own a car myself. Don´t worry about parking. There are huge garages near the city center at Grote Markt and De Parade. Just ask your GPS, and it will lead you to it. The parking fees for the entire day are less than 10 € and quite affordable.

You can also go by train or bus. The central bus station is close to the main train station, and both are in less than 1-kilometer walking distance from Grote Markt, which might be your starting point for a walking tour anyways.

When To visit Bergen Op Zoom

You can make a day trip to Bergen op Zoom at any time in the year. But to get the full experience you might prefer visiting the city in the high season, which is from April to October. In the off-season, most shops and other attractions are closed or limited opening times, and you can explore only a few of them.

Things To Do In Bergen Op Zoom

Besides a little bit of shopping, hopping from one café to the other and fuel your body with delicious food in one of the many restaurants, the one thing you should do in this beautiful little town is strolling through the streets and wonder about the cute but historic buildings. The following attractions and things to do might be too much for only one day trip. But who says you can visit only once? Therefore, read on and find this as a travel guide to Bergen op Zoom and t hings to do in one day in this Dutch city in Noord- Brabant.

Grote Markt

The best starting point is the Grote Markt from where you can head in any direction. It´s the central square situated in the middle of the old town and surrounded by Saint Gertrude´s Church, the Town Hall, Hotel De Draak, Theater De Maagd, and many cafés and restaurants. On a sunny summer day, you can soak in the vibrant and lively atmosphere while hanging around and drink a coffee or a cold refreshing drink.

Saint Gertrude’s Church

In 1219, the church was mentioned in the speech of a priest. But the first official reference was in 1370. However, an old legend tells about Saint Gertrud, who was the abbess of the abbey in Nivelles and founded the church in 654.

The oldest part of the church is the tower. The church itself may look like it´s from former times and historical, but it´s not. Several times it was burnt down and built up again, destroyed, and once again restored.

The highlight, except the beautiful interior, is the tower, also called “Pepperbox” due to its look. For a small obolus of 2 €, you can climb up the 183 steps of the tower, and you´ll be rewarded with a stunning 360 degrees view of the city.

The Town Hall

The Stadhuis is a building complex of three different houses. It´s still used today, and a tour of the inside is pretty worth it.

Theater De Maagd

The Theater De Maagd sits in a former Roman Catholic church. Nowadays, it´s an intimate theater with about 650 seats.

Hotel De Draak

Some people say that hotel De Draak is the oldest one in the Netherlands. It has been offering accommodation to visitors for over 600 years now. But the building itself is even older as it dates back to at least the 13th century.  

The Prison Gate

Lievevrouwepoort (or Gevangenpoort) is the oldest monument in town and was part of the fortifications around the city that was built in 1335. Over time, it became a prison. Today, it´s the only gate that is leftover from the city walls.

It´s also home to Escape the Gate , where you can see how fast you can escape this medieval city gate and prison.

The Markiezenhof

The Markiezenhof is the oldest city palace of the Netherlands and was built in the 15 th century. The building dates back to the late medieval period. It was the home of the Marquise of Bergen op Zoom. Today, it hosts a museum that shows the history of the town and region and a large permanent exhibition on the history of fairs.

Ravelijn op den Zoom

Ravelijin op den Zoom is the last fortification and surrounded the city until the end of the 19th century. It was built in 1702 by Menno van Coehoorn. The underground tunnels, cannon cellars, arched roofs, casemates, a vantage point, and a floating bridge can be visited. Check the tourist information at Markiezenhof.

The Grebbe is a restored waterway and sewage system that was installed in the 13th century. It connects the historic town and the surrounded waters, including the harbor. You can visit and explore the part between the Prison Gate and Markiezenhof on a guided tour.

The Harbor District

The former harbor district consists of a lot of beautiful and historic buildings. A lot of those houses were potteries in the early days. A small watergate from 1951 connects the open and the filled up part of the harbor. From the Prison Gate to the harbor district, it´s about a 10-minute walk.

The Old Town

Exploring the old town is a must-do while visiting Bergen op Zoom for a day. Even if you can´t make it to all the other attractions, this one you can´t miss. And it´s an easy one! Just leave the Grote Markt and stroll the streets. You´ll see colorful houses, shops, and many more! Wandering the Engelsestraat or Lievevrouwestraat will amaze and stun you!

Only a few minutes from the historic city center, whether by bike or by car, you´ll find the beach! Yes, Bergen op Zoom has even a beach! Isn´t that the perfect destination for hanging out a day or an entire weekend? Ok, for a day trip it might be too much to visit both the beach and the city center! But no one says you can´t visit more than once!

The Brabantse Wal

Another area outside the city is the Brabantse Wal. Located south of Bergen op Zoom, it´s a hilly area that separates the clay area of Zeeland and the sandy soils of Brabant. It is home to a wide range of plants and bird species. The highlights of this area are the Kraaijenberg and the Mattemburgh estate. The estate offers a beautiful English and French garden, a pond, coach houses, an English Tea House, and an Orangery.

Eat At Brownies & Downies

My newest favorite restaurant, café, and coffee dealer in the Netherlands is Brownies & Downies . Why do I like it? Well, not only is the food delicious, with incredibly tasty and crazy choices. It is also is an inclusive training center for people with intellectual disabilities. They learn how to work in a restaurant and eventually actually work and run them. 

Bonus Tip 1: Carnival

During the carnival season, they rename the city to Krabbegat, which means Crab Hole . The traditional dress code during the carnival is a scarf of a lace curtain and a red handkerchief.

Bonus Tip 2: Local Market

When you´re fancy an excellent and local market and have time going to Bergen Op Zoom during the week, you should spend some time in the market. It takes place every Thursday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. In the center of the city. You can find it around Wouwsestraat, Van Der Rijtstraat, Stationsstraat, and on the Korenbeursplein (square).

De Gastrobar en de Gastroboutique zijn geopend van woensdag tot en met zaterdag.

Op minder dan 1 minuut loopafstand heb je de keuze tussen de parkeerterreinen Sint Catharinaplein en de Korenmarkt. In het gehele centrum is betaald parkeren van toepassing. Foodtruckfestival RRRollend – 30 augustus t/m 1 september

Een zomers foodtruckfestival dat ieder jaar weer een groot feest is​..

Voor diegenen die er even uit willen. Diegenen die elkaar gemist hebben. Voor diegenen die zin hebben in een lekker hapje en drankje of diegenen die even lekker willen dansen. Voor diegenen die er al het hele jaar naar uitkijken en diegenen die er nog nooit geweest is.

Diegenen die gewoon een keertje gaan kijken en de trouwste fans. Voor diegenen met kleine kinderen en een druk leven en de studenten die iets minder hebben om uit te geven. Of je nou wilt eten of drinken, dansen of zingen. Je vrienden zien of juist niet.

​Om nieuwe mensen te leren kennen of juist die oude bekenden tegen wilt komen. Iets nieuws wilt proeven maar tegelijk ook je lokale favoriete tentje wilt steunen. Precies voor die mensen is Rrrollend. En ook voor iedereen die dit niet is.

Charif Food

De noten specialist sinds 1989

Charif Food is een familiebedrijf dat bestaat sinds 1989. Wat begon als kleine kruidenierszaak in de binnenstad van Bergen op Zoom groeide later uit tot een groothandel in kruiden, noten, peulvruchten, gedroogde vruchten en superfood.

Wij voorzien al ruim 20 jaar kleine winkels, supermarkten, bakkerijen en restaurants van verse noten, zaden & pitten, peulvruchten, gedroogde vruchten en superfoods. Wij krijgen dagelijks verse handel binnen en daarmee bent u verzekerd van goede en verse producten.

Wij kopen groot in en hebben goede contacten in onze branche, waardoor wij goede kwaliteit tegen zeer scherpe prijzen kunnen aanbieden voor kleine en grote hoeveelheden. Wij zijn een begrip in gebrande noten, ongebrande noten, zaden & pitten, peulvruchten, gedroogde vruchten en superfoods.
