Our Captains

Our Ships' Captains are an integral part of life on board, and you may see them around your cruise ship, and of course at the Captains' Drinks Parties. Featured here are our current Captains, with a brief biography on how they came to work on board Fred. Olsen cruise ships.

Captain Degerlund

Captain Mikael Degerlund started his seafaring career as a Deck Boy in 1981 at the tender age of 16. By 1989 he had gained his Chief Officer’s licence and in 1995 earned his Master’s licence, enabling him to realise his dreams of becoming a Captain. He worked for cruise lines including Viking Line, Norwegian Cruise Line and P&O Cruises before joining Fred. Olsen in March 2012.

Mikael has seen the world from on board our ships, captaining all kinds of cruises from short breaks to epic circumnavigations of the globe. His favourite destinations include the beautiful Baltic countries and the spectacular French Polynesian island of Moorea where, during an Around the World cruise in early 2016, he stepped ashore to get married in paradise. He always enjoys meeting our guests and making them smile, particularly those who return to their ‘home from home at sea’ time and time again.

When he’s not sailing around the world, Captain Degerlund splits his time between his homes in Finland and Spain, spending his days with his wife, two grown-up children and his friends. His hobbies and interests include sailing, golfing, skiing, hiking, gardening and travelling. We've taken the chance to ask Captain Degerlund a few important questions about life on board.

Born and raised in the Romanian city of Constanta, the Black Sea’s biggest port city, Captain Valentin Giuglea – or simply Captain Val, as he likes to be known – grew up by the water, breathing in the sea air, so a seafaring career always seemed like an inevitability for him.

Valentin graduated from the Maritime Institute before starting his career in 1996 as an Electrical Engineer, followed by 6 years as Chief Electrician on cargo vessels. During these formative years however, Valentin realised he wanted his career to sail another route, and decided to study further at The Maritime University. Since graduating in 2002, he’s worked in various roles at sea, on various types of vessels, for a number of companies. Captain Giuglea joined Fred. Olsen in 2013 as a Safety Officer, but was soon promoted to Chief Officer/Staff Captain, and finally made Captain – initially on Black Watch – in August 2018.

Captain Val loves the friendly atmosphere on board our ships, and the relationships built between guests and crews alike. Valentin’s favourite experience so far was being part of the Captains in Cádiz event, while his favourite destination is the Med – although he hopes to cruise Asia in the future.

In his spare time, Valentin likes to spend time at home with his family and trying his hand at all manner of DIY jobs. He also enjoys travelling, reading and music, and keeping his trumpet and bass guitar playing skills up to scratch.

Captain Rommell

Born and raised in the Philippines, Captain Rommel Pineda has enjoyed several years of sailing the world’s oceans with Fred. Olsen so far. After graduating Merchant Maritime College, Rommel joined us in 1996 and has been an important part of our crew ever since. In 2017, Rommel flourished when he was temporarily promoted to Captain, so stepping up to role permanently in 2018 was an easy transition.

Having spent his entire seafaring career with us, Captain Pineda has visited some of the greatest destinations on earth aboard our ships. As a nature lover, Rommel lists Norway, Iceland, Greenland and the stunning South Pacific islands among his best places to visit. In the future, he hopes for a chance to guide guests to the North Pacific region, and take in China, South Korea, Japan and Alaska.

Aside from discovering the world, Captain Pineda relishes building a rapport with his fellow crew members and Fred. Olsen guests alike. He believes what sets working for and cruising with Fred. Olsen apart from the rest of our industry is the welcoming atmosphere of our smaller ships and the friendliness of the people on board; as well as the variety of cruises we offer.

In his spare time, Rommel makes the most of his time at home to catch up with family and friends.

Captain Victor Stoica

Captain Stoica was born in Romania in October 1964 and has been a seafarer for over 30 years. After attending a marine academy from 1983 to 1987, he became a 3rd officer on board cargo ships in 1988 and took his first role on board a passenger ship – the ‘Tropicana’ – in 1999 before joining Fred. Olsen in May 2001.

He enjoys sailing to Norway and presenting guests with the spectacular scenery of the fjordland; visiting the Canary Islands, with their striking landscapes and great climate; and cruising around the UK. Captain Stoica notes the friendly on board atmosphere and the chance to interact with our guests as the things he loves most about being a Captain on board Fred. Olsen’s ships; and he enjoys working for the company because of its rich history and family heritage, which is unique in the cruise industry.

In his free time Victor enjoys travelling with his family, especially visiting new places inland that he might not get to explore when sailing the world’s waterways .

Captain Steffan Ravneng

Captain Steffan Ravneng

Nationality: Norwegian

A proud Norwegian, Captain Steffan Ravneng was born and raised in Sarpsborg, a city in Southern Norway situated on the Glomma – the country’s largest river – and surrounded by the beautiful waterways and landscapes of the fjordland.

Having formed a connection with the water during his formative years, spent enjoying life by the Glomma and the nearby Sarpefossen waterfall, Steffan always aspired for a maritime career. So, after completing his qualifications, he set about becoming a seafarer, which soon led to working in various roles for a number of companies including Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line and Star Cruises.

Since joining Fred. Olsen in March 2016, Steffan has spent time working on board Boudicca , Braemar, Borealis and Bolette in roles such as Senior Safety Officer, Chief Officer and Staff Captain. In 2022, he was delighted and extremely proud to finally become Captain Ravneng, when he took the helm of Balmoral when she returned to service.

Steffan’s favourite Fred. Olsen experiences so far include the memorable Captains in Cádiz event and Amazon River explorations, while he’s looking forward to discovering the paradise islands of the Pacific. When not on board, Captain Ravneng returns to Norway to enjoy time with family and friends, and indulge his passion for home and garden improvements.

Captain Davor

Captain Davor Dubravica

Nationality: Croatian

Captain Davor hails from the coastal city of Rijeka in Croatia, and has been part of the Fred. Olsen family since February 2013. Having previously worked for Princess Cruise Line, he began his Fred. Olsen career as Safety Officer, before a worthy promotion to Chief Officer just a year later.

He has worked on all of Fred. Olsen’s cruise ships except Black Prince, but his favourite is Bolette . He found his time after the pandemic with getting Bolette and Borealis back sailing a huge success, both personally and as part of a great team. Captain Davor loves to meet our guests on board, and seeing so many familiar faces around the ship makes him feel like he’s at home; but meeting new to Fred. Olsen guests warms his heart as it means our family is growing.

Captain Davor particularly enjoys cruising to the Norwegian Fjords – as Fred. Olsen’s homeland it has both nature and scenery that’s breath-taking; and one of the new places he hasn’t visited is the Philippine Archipelago, so this is on his list to visit one day.

During his spare time, Captain Davor enjoys family time at home in Croatia, where they explore Croatian Islands and coast on his boat, and swimming in the area’s blue waters – he’s never far away from the sea! He relishes riding his motorcycle during the colder months, and fishing too.

VIDEO: Fred Olsen Reunites Fleet for ‘Captains in Cadiz’ Celebration

CruiseMapper logo

Fred Olsen celebrated the historic coming together of its 4 ocean cruise ships: Balmoral , Black Watch , Boudicca and  Braemar , in Cadiz Spain on September 10, 2018. Entitled ‘Captains in Cadiz’, this was only the 2nd time ever that the fleet converged in one place, anywhere around the globe.

Fred Olsen’s 4 ships sailed into Cadiz harbour just before 8:00 a.m., carrying 4,000 passengers who were welcomed by ‘Los Sones de Cadiz’ band and a port bedecked with ‘Captains in Cadiz’ fiesta-style bunting and banners.

2018 marks the 170th anniversary of Fred Olsen’s start as a shipping company. Key part of the celebrations was the bringing together of the 8 ships’ Masters from across the fleet. One of the highlights was a ceremonial Plaque Exchange, attended by all 8 Captains, Fred Olsen Junior, Mike Rodwell, Mayor of Cadiz, President of Cadiz Port Authority and other local dignitaries.

At 5:00 p.m., all 4 ships made a dramatic departure from Cadiz in convoy, serenaded by local jazz band. Led out of the harbour by a fire tug boat spraying water cannons, the fleet passed under The Constitution of 1812 Bridge in formation, prior to setting sail for the next destinations: Braemar returning to Southampton; both Black Watch and Balmoral to Lisbon; and Boudicca to Ibiza.

Fred Olsen Cruise Line has already started planning the next fleet reunion, the 3rd such event, in Funchal, Madeira , on April 4, 2020, named ‘Four Fred.s in Funchal’.

All I know is that there has been a very large turnaround in captains over the past 18 months. The FOCL policy of long serving captains seems to have disappeared. Also, all captains used to be Scandinavian but this is no longer the case. Make what you will of that.

They have all gone onto better contracts on much larger ships in the wake of the Concordia outrage.

5,000+ Club

We left black watch on 19th june and mikael degerlund was onboard. Ì was told the captains now do two months on and two off and that he was due to leave the ship at the end of june.

Sorry about typing, but i cannot login on our computer and am struggling onmy husbands ipad which i hate. Anyone else had trouble logging in and if so canyou advise. I had been trying for more than 24 hours and had got a new password in that time. I have only just been able to get in with temp password and change it now onthis. I have sent an email to cruise critic to see if they can do anything. I want to write a review of black watch to canada but it is not viable without a proper keyboard imo. I havve not logged in on our computer for more than5 weeks.

I have now logged in on the 'proper' computer by taking advice here:-

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1060785

It seem they now insist on clicking 'remember me' to set a cookie and that solved the issue. I never like a computer to remember passwords as I think it is safer to put them in fresh each time and have never had trouble before.

I can understand the computer though as I am feeling a bit peckish and a cookie would go down very well with my coffee just now!

  • 2 weeks later...

Just discovered that Fred. has updated their Captain's page. The captain for Black Watch is Henrik Mattson who was the chief officer on Boudicca.

  • 9 months later...

There has been a reshuffle of commands. This should now be correct:

Henrik Mattson
