  • Safety, emergencies, and basics

Freeport is a regularly visited cruise port of call in the Caribbean during the Fall-Winter season, with as many as 400,000 passengers and over 150 cruise ships visits in 2019.

The cruise port terminal has a delightful ambiance, the area is very clean and immaculately kept. On the whole, Freeport is safe but it is advisable to use caution in crowded areas considering that there have been reports of tourists having purses snatched.

The local population is good-natured, polite, helpful, and speak English extremely well. After all, English is the country's official language. For those cruising with families, there is a lot to do. Cruise passengers with disabilities or with walking difficulties will find it relatively simple to wander around in Freeport on their own.

Where is Freeport and the cruise port

Freeport, a major port city with a population of around 26,900, is located in The Bahamas northwest region. The port is on the southwest coast of Grand Bahama Island, 80 miles (129 km) east of the Florida coast, directly across Boyton Beach.

How far is Freeport from highlights

Although the cruise terminal in Freeport has a number of attractions, namely restaurants-grills and shops, the city itself, most highlights and things to do are between 3 and 11 miles from where cruise ships dock.

Ships dock on a medium-sized mixed (ferry and cruise port) with quays for up to 3 cruise ships to moor. The Freeport cruise terminal is on Lucaya Harbor and many times confused with the Port Lucaya Marketplace and with the Port Lucaya Marina (both in downtown Freeport).

Freeport cruise terminal services and amenities

There is nothing to do or see right outside the exit gates of the cruise port. And the city of Freeport is not within walking distance. The cruise terminal is on a large open area with different buildings where cruise travelers will find the following services and amenities:

  • Tourist info kiosk
  • Beach tours
  • Duty-free shopping
  • Souvenirs shops
  • Drug Stores
  • Arts and crafts stores
  • Señor Frogs
  • Fat Tuesday
  • Caribbean Barrel restaurant and bar
  • Tropical juices and drinks bars
  • Seafood shaks

Although you may read outdated reviews stating that cruise lines provide a shuttle bus to downtown Freeport city, for more than a decade that shuttle buses are not in operation.

Freeport Cruise Port (Bahamas) | 10 Best Things To Do In Freeport

freeport bahamas cruise port

Welcome to Freeport cruise port, the Bahamas!

Freeport is the capital of Grand Bahama Island and the second-largest Bahamian port of call after Nassau (New Providence Island). Due to its proximity to the coast of Florida and the port of Miami which lies 110 miles to the west (2.5 hours by boat), Freeport is a popular stop in the Caribbean cruise itineraries. In this article, read about:

  • Freeport cruise port (Freeport cruise terminal, getting around, helpful info)

Freeport Cruise Port

Cruise ships dock at Freeport Harbour (also referred to as Harbour Village and Lucayan Harbour), a medium-sized cruise port that can accommodate up to 3 cruise vessels at a time.

The Freeport cruise ship terminal is well-developed and safe, with amenities such as a tourist information kiosk, car rental/tour booth, restrooms, souvenir and duty-free shops, restaurants and bars (Señor Frog’s, Fat Tuesday’s, Bucks Sports Bar, etc.).

It is a beautiful area to walk around, filled with multicolored houses, palm trees, food and drink stands, arts and crafts stores, and places to sit and relax. The taxi rank and bus parking (which is usually a shore excursion meeting place unless indicated differently on your tour ticket) are located within the port complex, a short walking distance from your ship.

Besides the well-developed cruise terminal area, there’s not much to see and do around the port itself. Freeport is primarily an industrial area and there is no actual “downtown”.

The hub of tourist activities in Freeport is centered around Port Lucaya Marina and Port Lucaya Marketplace , both located around 16 km/10 miles (a 20-minute drive) from the cruise terminal. Unless you are taking an organized shore excursion, you’ll probably want to spend your day here.

There are plenty of taxis waiting to take you to Port Lucaya and Lucaya Beach , one of the best beaches on Grand Bahama Island, located in Port Lucaya.

The port of Freeport is also famous for its Grand Bahama Shipyard, often used by Bahamas-flagged cruise vessels for ship repairs, maintenance and drydock refurbishment works. You’ll be able to spot the shipyard from your cruise terminal.

Getting Around Freeport Bahamas

  • The port area is flat and easy to navigate for people with walking difficulties/wheelchair users.
  • Cruise lines DO NOT provide shuttle buses from Freeport Harbour to Port Lucaya. In addition, there is NO official public transportation in Freeport cruise port, so your only option is to either take a taxi or book a shore excursion to one of the nearby attractions.
  • Taxis in Freeport are metered and a ride to Port Lucaya can cost you from $5-10 per person each way, depending on the number of people you share a taxi with (taxis are either regular or minivan-style). A taxi ride takes about 20 minutes and the drop-off point is usually Port Lucaya Marketplace. It is advisable to agree on the price with the taxi driver in advance.
  • Alternatively, you can rent a car if you feel comfortable exploring on your own. Keep in mind that driving is on the left. Check out Freeport Bahamas rent-a-car deals and prices
  • The official language in the Bahamas is English.
  • Since Freeport Harbour is in an industrial area, there are no beaches within walking distance of the ship. The nearest beaches and beach resorts are located in Port Lucaya, including Lucaya Beach and Taino Beach .
  • There are two most popular shopping areas in Freeport cruise port: Port Lucaya Marketplace (a 20-minute drive from the port), and Freeport cruise terminal area (Delsol, Cariloha, arts and crafts, jewelry, souvenirs…). In some port reviews, you may read about the International Bazaar which is located in downtown Freeport, a 15-minute drive from the cruise terminal. However, this bazaar has been abandoned and is not in use anymore.
  • Note: As mentioned above, the major tourist activities are centered in Port Lucaya, so there’s not much to do in the official downtown area. The downtown area is located around 7 km/4.3 miles away from Port Lucaya and its beaches.
  • The majority of restaurants in Freeport and generally the Bahamas will automatically add a 15% service charge to your bill. Tipping is at your discretion.
  • The official currency in the Bahamas is the Bahamian Dollar (BSD). 1 USD equals 1 BSD. US dollars and credit cards are widely accepted. ATMs are available in Port Lucaya.
  • The high season in Freeport lasts from mid-December to mid-April, with warm and dry weather. The Bahamas lies within the hurricane belt, so hurricanes and heavy rains may occur from June to November.
  • Grand Bahama Airport is the only international airport on Grand Bahama Island and is located 9 km/5.6 miles (less than a 15-minute drive) northeast of Freeport cruise port.

10 Best Things to Do in Freeport Cruise Port

1. port lucaya marketplace & marina.

Port Lucaya lies on Grand Bahama Island’s southern coast, a 20-minute drive southeast of Freeport Harbour. Port Lucaya Marketplace is a large, 9.5-acre open-air shopping facility that consists of dozens of colorful little buildings and tents housing clothing, jewelry, liquor, souvenirs, and other types of shops.

Visit a straw market and shop for authentic Bahamian products including arts and crafts, before tasting local specialties in one of the numerous eateries and bars in the area.

Within walking distance, you can visit the Bahamas Maritime Museum and stroll around Port Lucaya Marina dotted with colorful buildings, boats and yachts. Count Basie Square is where you can enjoy some live music and performances. This bustling place is a shopping paradise and one of the highlights of Freeport.

Port Lucaya Marketplace at sunset

Right across the road from the entrance to the marketplace, you’ll see several large hotel resorts including Lighthouse Pointe at Grand Lucayan Resort where you can enjoy a beach day pass with an all-inclusive service.

In case you don’t need an all-day pass which normally includes unlimited food and drinks, you can still enjoy the hotel’s outdoor pool, hot tub, bar and sunbed/umbrellas for a regular charge. The resort overlooks a long, sandy Lucaya Beach , and I enjoyed it so much that I highly recommend it to everyone looking to spend a relaxing beach day.

2. Freeport Beaches and Resorts

There are no beaches in the industrial area of Freeport Harbour and the nearest beaches are located in Port Lucaya. The beaches boast crystal clear, warm turquoise waters and are mostly nestled on the Grand Bahama’s southern coast. There are also a few beach resorts offering all-inclusive beach day passes. Below is a selection of the main beaches and resorts in Freeport.

Lucaya Beach – A 4-mile long sandy beach runs parallel to the main road in Port Lucaya and is located a 5-minute walk from Port Lucaya Marketplace. This beautiful beach lines waterfront hotel resorts and offers a variety of watersports including paddleboards and jet skis. Make sure you check out the legendary Billy Joe’s Beach Restaurant & Bar, a hotspot for both locals and tourists popular for its delicious conch, beer, and sweeping sea views.

Taino Beach – This popular beach is located a few miles away from Lucaya Beach and ranks among the top-rated beaches in Freeport. It is located a 25-minute drive from Freeport Harbour and features watersports, beach resorts and entertainment parks (Pirate’s Cove Zipline and Water Park, Taino Beach Resort and Clubs, Tony Macaroni’s Conch Experience, The Stoned Crab Restaurant, Bernie’s TikiHut, and others).

Fortune Beach – For those of you who seek to escape the hustle and bustle of crowded places, Fortune Beach offers a laid-back atmosphere. Fortune Beach is located a 30-minute drive from the Freeport Harbour cruise terminal.

Xanadu Beach – It is the closest beach to Freeport Harbour (only a 15-minute drive). The beach is a popular spot for families due to its warm, shallow waters and relaxed vibe.

3. Snorkeling and Scuba Diving

Port Lucaya is a great place for snorkeling and scuba diving , yet the best snorkeling is in the open sea. Hop aboard one of the boats or catamarans, and go for a half-day snorkeling/diving tour that will take you to the best snorkeling and scuba diving locations including Peterson Cay National Park, Paradise Cove, and a few others. S

norkel past beautiful coral reefs and look out for Green Sea Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle, and other impressive aquatic wildlife. The best way is to book an organized tour but you can also snorkel on your own from the beach (I did it from Lucaya Beach).

Alternatively, if you don’t want to get wet, you can book one of the boat, catamaran, or glass bottom boat tours that will take you to the open sea where you will be able to spot dolphins, giant sea turtles, stingrays and other wildlife.

In addition, fishing and deep-sea fishing rank among the top-rated attractions. The best place for that activity is the deep North-West Providence Channel where you can catch local fish such as snappers, barracudas, groupers, tunas, and more.

Guide to Freeport, Grand Bahama’s Cruise Port

Port Lucaya is located in the industrial part of Freeport. Given the location of the cruise port on the island, I highly recommend to pre-book your excursion or transportation given the location of the port. The beach is not walkable from the cruise port.

Once you exit the cruise ship, there are a few shops to eat and purchase souvenirs but outside of that area, there are no surrounding landmarks or walkable locations.

Garden of the Groves is rated the number one attraction in Freeport and is about a thirty minute drive from the cruise port. If you want to see nature and wildlife, I recommend to go here.

Pirate’s Cove Zipline and Water Park is located on Taino Beach and is a very popular location if you are traveling from the cruise port. If you choose to go to this location, I recommend to book your taxi ride when you arrive in port and do not pay more than $20 per person ROUND TRIP for transportation to go to Pirate’s Cove. Visiting Taino Beach is rated the number two sight to see at Freeport. The benefit with going to Pirate’s Cove as opposed to another location is it’s close to the cruise port, popular among other cruise passengers so you feel safe, and have a common idea of when to head back to the ship without having to book a tour. Pirate’s Cove also has free wifi, a bar, and food available for purchase.

Paradise Cove is a great destination for snorkeling and is about a 25 minute drive from the cruise port. The photo taken is from Taino Beach at Pirate’s Cove.

Swim with Pigs at Crystal Beach.

No matter what you decide to do at Freeport, make sure you have your itinerary planned beforehand.

Freeport Cruise Port: Tips, Excursions, Weather

The Freeport cruise port on Grand Bahama Island is the second most popular tourist destination in the Bahamas after Nassau.

Grand Bahama is one of the northernmost islands of the Bahamas . It is known for two areas in particular – the resort center at Freeport and the suburb of Lucaya. Cruise visitors will have a chance to see both of them.

Freeport is the dominant city on Grand Bahama with its own cruise terminal and the Grand Bahama Island International Airport. Lucaya also has a cruise terminal and is a major hub for cruise ships, shopping, restaurants, hotels and entertainment.

Although Freeport is the second most popular Bahamas port, it is mainly popular for two types of cruises. The first type is short-term cruises such as three to five nights that embark from the eastern coast of Florida and that go only to the Bahamas. These Florida embarkation ports include Miami, Jacksonville and Port Canaveral.

The second type is longer seven-night cruises that go only to the Bahamas and embark from northern U.S. cruise ports such as Baltimore, Bayonne, New Jersey and Virginia Beach. A small number of five-night cruises embark from Charleston, South Carolina.

The short-term cruises have appeal to people who already live in the southeastern United States or longer-term Florida visitors who want to combine a short cruise with Florida beach vacations.

Where is Freeport, Grand Bahama Island?

Freeport is only 111 miles northeast of the Miami FL cruise port. The close distance makes Freeport a common stop for short-term cruises to the Bahamas. It is 185 miles northwest of Nassau on Paradise Island, which is why cruises to the Bahamas often include both ports.

A cruise ship traveling at 22 knots or 25 miles per hour could reach Freeport in less than five hours from Miami.

Quick Travel Tips

Attractions and shore excursions.

The Freeport cruise port has modest offerings for cruise visitors, so they are more likely to get transportation and go elsewhere to enjoy the island.

The best-known attraction on the island is Port Lucaya Marketplace, a large complex of shops, restaurants and entertainment options. We took a shuttle bus there for the afternoon and found plenty to do for several hours.

Port Lucaya is about 25 minutes from the Freeport cruise docks. It isn’t as large as the Nassau tourism district, but it does compare well to other shopping and dining districts in the Caribbean.

Other than the Lucaya Marketplace, Freeport attractions include Lucayan National Park, which has one of the world’s largest underwater cave systems. Peterson Cay National Park is a protected area with coral reefs and opportunities for picnicking, snorkeling and scuba diving.

Bahamas Dolphin Tours has swimming and diving with dolphins. It’s a common excursion from the cruise lines. The facility is a short ferry ride from Lucaya. Prices depend on the program and range from less than $100 per person to more than $300.

Other favorite attractions are Rand Nature Center or the Garden of the Groves.

Rand Nature Center, 25 minutes from Freeport Harbor, is a common cruise line shore excursion. The 100-acre facility is a nature reserve with hiking trails and rotating visual art, cultural and educational exhibits.

Garden of the Groves, seven miles east of Port Lucaya Marketplace, is a botanical garden and family attraction with more than 10,000 species of plants and animals. It has 12 acres of waterfalls, gardens, a meditation labyrinth, petting zoo and playground. This four-hour shore excursion will cost about $55 per person depending on sailing date and other factors.

Golfers can use two courses – the Grand Lucayan Reef Golf Course or Ruby Golf Course. Grand Lucayan near the Port Lucaya Marketplace has large and flat greens. Out of 18 holes, 13 play off water. The 18-hole Ruby Golf Course is closest to the Freeport Cruise Port at five miles or 12 minutes away. Both courses are par 72 and nearly 7,000 yards long.

Beaches Near the Cruise Port

Freeport cruise port map.

Grand Bahama has 90 miles of beaches on its southern shores that offer many options for anyone with transportation on their own. Otherwise, cruise lines offer plenty of excursion possibilities.

A typical beach excursion costs about $40 to $50 per person including transportation. Some cost more if they add amenities such as snacks, lunch or beach umbrellas.

Xanadu Beach is the closest major beach to the Freeport Cruise Port at 15 minutes or six miles away. This public beach is three miles from the International Bazaar, offering water sports, straw goods, food and beverages.

Anyone who visits the Port Lucaya Marketplace can take a short walk to Lucaya Beach.

The respectable Gold Rock Beach is a stretch for time at 30 miles or 40 minutes east of the cruise port.

Bahamas Ministry of Tourism recommends the smaller Paradise Cove Beach 13 miles or less than 30 minutes west of the port.

Finally, Taino Beach in Lucaya has a children’s playground, nature preserve and bird sanctuary. One tour operator offered a visit to Taino Beach Resort for about $65. It has a pool, lazy river and beach access among other attractions.

Shopping / Restaurants

Shoppers will find plenty to browse and buy at the 12-acre Port Lucaya Marketplace. It is the place to go for any shoppers visiting Freeport by cruise and is a common cruise shore excursion.

Port Lucaya Marketplace is a nice shopping and restaurant district, although not nearly as big as the one in Nassau and other major ports. Still, visitors will find plenty to see and do both in the marketplace and at nearby attractions within walking distance such as Lucaya Beach and Windsor Park.

Getting Around / Transportation

Taxi rates are metered and set by the government. Meter fares start at $3; each extra mile is 40 cent. Rates include another charge for every passenger over the age of two years old.

Grand Bahama has a bus system that runs from 7 a.m. to sunset. The fare is $1 in the Freeport and Lucaya areas and $2 in the west and east ends. Cruise visitors who disembark at the Freeport cruise port can take a bus or taxi to the Port Lucaya Marketplace.

Cruise visitors to Freeport will find plenty of warm weather throughout the year. Even during the winter, the average high temperature reaches the mid-70s Fahrenheit.

But nighttime temperatures are cool and bring the temperatures of seawater down to the chilly level. So winter is not the best time to visit for swimmers.

Average daytime temperatures eventually climb into the upper 80s Fahrenheit or low 30s Celsius in the summer. But it’s not the temperatures that may keep people away during some months of the year. It’s the rainfall.

Rainfall averages two to three inches a month during the dry season from December through April. It rains less than 10 days a month during this time.

Rainfall begins to climb in May to four inches and eventually reaches the highest point of more than eight inches in August and September. They are the worst months to visit Freeport.

Cruise travelers planning to visit Grand Bahama will find that the best weather for a combination of warm temperatures and low risk of rain is in March and April.

The Story of Freeport Bahamas Cruise Port: From Quiet Island to Tourist Hotspot

The tale of Freeport in the Bahamas is a fascinating one. It’s about how a quiet place turned into one of the top spots for cruise ships. This change has helped both the city of Freeport and the Bahamas grow.

The Start and Growth

Freeport became a city in 1955. The Bahamian government decided to make a prominent area on Grand Bahama Island a free trade zone.

Thanks to Wallace Groves, an American businessman, and a special agreement, this area went from mostly swamps to a busy, modern city. This agreement, which is essential for Freeport’s growth, is set to last until 2054.

Early History

Long before Freeport was built, Grand Bahama Island had a long and eventful history. Christopher Columbus came here in 1492, and after that, the original Lucayan people faced tough times.

The island saw Spanish and then British control and even pirates before Freeport underwent significant changes in the 20th century. These changes made the island a lively place for tourists and business.

A Place for Fun and Business

When Freeport started, it helped the island’s economy, especially with tourists. Places like Port Lucaya became even more popular, with great hotels, water sports, and quiet beaches.

Also, the Lucayan National Park , known for its incredible underwater caves, shows off the island’s natural beauty, attracting more visitors.

Freeport Now: A Top Spot for Cruises

jetsetterjourneys

Nowadays, Freeport is known for being close to Florida, making it a perfect place for business and a favorite stop for cruise ships. This has made Freeport and the Bahamas more famous and helped its economy. It’s a place full of adventure, relaxation, and discovery for people from all over.

Freeport shows us how, with a good vision, investment, and natural beauty, a place can become a beloved destination for tourists and an excellent spot for businesses, making it a jewel of the Caribbean.

Well lucky you! Freeport is bustling with unique experiences of all kinds, from culinary adventures, shopping opportunities, to historical tours, and of course white sand beaches, crystal-clear waters and outdoorsy activities galore.

For Those Wanting to Dig their Toes in the Sand

It’s probably a safe bet that you booked your Caribbean cruise with the idyllic beach in mind. If so, Freeport is sure to deliver, with pristine white sand beaches that will feel soft under your feet or blanket.

Here are some of our favorites.

Peterson Cay National Park

About a mile offshore from Grand Bahama, you’ll find Peterson Cay National Park . This tiny island covers just 1.5 acres and is the smallest park in the Bahamas, but it boasts a wealth of diving and snorkeling opportunities in its active coral reefs. Peterson Cay is reachable by boat or even jet ski, with some tours giving you the option to make your way onto the beach to relax after you’ve had your fill of viewing the aquatic wildlife.

You’ll find more remote beaches here where you can potentially even have some space to yourself. If you’re looking to get away from your fellow shipmates for a bit and enjoy some peace and quiet, Peterson Cay might just be the ticket.

Junkanoo Beach

Just looking to spend a relaxing day at the beach? Try Junkanoo Beach, which on top of having a very fun name to say, offers a beautiful white sand beach and activities for the whole family.

(And yes, there is a Junkanoo Beach on Nassau as well.  We aren’t confused)

Just a short trip from the port, Junkanoo offers beach rentals such as kayaks, paddle boards, jet skis, and more, giving you options if you aren’t the type to grab a chair and layout. For those that are perfectly content catching some fun, beach chairs aplenty are available for rent, as well as towels. You’ll often be able to talk your way into a special combo where if you rent a chair and/or umbrella, you can get 30 minutes on a kayak or paddleboard for free.

When you get hungry, there is a decent restaurant offering local and familiar fare, from delightful conch fritters to surprisingly good pizza. Prices here will be quite modest as well, giving you a good bang for your day-in-Freeport buck.

Paradise Cove

For another beach options, try Paradise Cove. A bit more of a trek from the port, you will still be able to easily find a variety of round-trip transfer options right there in the port.

Paradise Cove has a beautiful white sand beach with the same options for relaxing and has other activities, such as beach volleyball, couples’ paddle boats, and unbelievable snorkeling at Deadman’s Reef. Naturally, there is also a restaurant to help you from going hungry.

Lucayan National Park

One of the most popular destinations in Freeport is and for good reason. Lucayan is one of the most beautiful eco-systems you’ll find in all of the Caribbean, let alone the Bahamas.

On these beautiful 42-acres you’ll find lush foliage and plants that you will only see here, a picturesque beach, hundreds of species of birds, and even one of the world’s longest underwater cave systems. For the bird enthusiasts, in particular, three restricted birds reside here — including the Thick-billed Vireo, the Bahama Swallow, and the Olive-capped Warbler.

Gold Rock Beach, located within the park, is routinely voted as being one of the best beaches in the world. After you’ve explored the park, you can cool off in the teal waters or stroll along miles of white-sand beach. Once you’ve had your fill, just hop back on your bus to return to the port. is great for kids as well, offering you a great opportunity to enjoy unique nature with the whole family. Roundtrip transfers will be readily available in the port.

For Those Looking for More Vitamin Sea

Looking to stretch your sea legs even further? Consider these options on the water.

Book a Private or Small Group Sailing Adventure

If you haven’t had enough time out on the sea, but want something a little more intimate, consider taking a small group or private sailing tour out of Freeport. You’ll simply hop off your cruise liner, find your guide, and jump onto their boat to set sail!

Most of these adventures will be all-inclusive with food and drink and take you to some favorite snorkeling spots so you can enjoy the incredible underwater wildlife viewing. Pick and choose the package that best suits you, enjoy your day on the beautiful Bahamian waters, and you’ll be back in time to catch your ship.

Keep Things Environmentally Friendly with an Eco Tour

An eco-tour is a new wave of tourism that allows you to sample some of Freeport’s finer environmental offerings while minimizing your impact on the area. Tours will offer short boat rides to various points in and around Freeport so you can enjoy the main attractions on land and in the water.

Many tours will involve a short ferryboat ride to Water Cay, lying just off the coast from Grand Bahama. This tiny island, with just 25 inhabitants, has an interesting story to tell and a remarkable array of wildlife. Encompassing just 2 square miles, Water Cay boasts blue holes and reefs with a wide variety of coral and fish, lush mangroves, and even the opportunity to go bottom fishing.

On land, you’ll step back in time to a place with no motor vehicles, a single church, and school, modest limestone homes, a corn mill, water well, and friendly residents. You can learn about the unique history of Water Cay, which dates back to the 1800s, as well as how it manages to maintain its simple way of life.

Stay Dry While Viewing the Fishies

Want to see the aquatic life but don’t necessarily feel like getting wet? Try out a glass-bottom boat tour. These special vessels are equipped with glass bottoms, allowing you a clear view of the activity below. You’ll spot numerous fish, coral, and perhaps even a shipwreck.

Enjoy a Dolphin Encounter

Dolphins have long been one of the most beloved creatures in the sea, and if you’ve never met one up close and personal then you simply must! Dolphins are incredibly intelligent animals with great personalities, and a dolphin encounter in Freeport allows you to get to know them intimately.

You can’t get any more interactive, as you’ll literally be in the water with them, learning about these playful creatures as they swim around you in their lagoon habitat.

The 9-acre lagoon has 14 different dolphins at Sanctuary Bay.  Bring your cameras and a thirst for knowledge as you learn about these amazing creatures.  You can even get a kiss from a dolphin.

Take a Swim with the Pigs

No, that’s not a typo. You can literally swim with the pigs here in Grand Bahama.

If you’re looking for something completely different, there are half-day tours out of Freeport that take you to a remote spot on Crystal Beach where you can swim with the resident wild pigs. These pigs are very friendly and used to interacting with people and will be excited to see you pulling in (likely because they know the guides have treats for them). Just imagine the photo opportunities here!

For Those Seeking Adventures On Land

Need a break from the water for a bit but don’t want to sit around? Check out the following ideas, giving you options to find adventure or keeping things chill.

The Garden of the Groves

Looking to just chill out during your time in Freeport but want something other than a crowded beach? The is for you. In fact, it’s so popular that most city tours will include a stop here.

This little oasis offers shady paths, waterfalls, fountains, and tons of beautiful trees and plants — everything you need to unwind. You can wander the Garden’s many trails, get to know the local birds, and even grab a drink and bite to eat at the garden cafe. Kick back and relax — you’re on vacation, after all.

This garden has been certified as a Wildlife Habitat by the U.S. Wildlife Federation. This means the new operators are providing the four basic habitat elements needed for wildlife to thrive: food, water, cover, and places to raise young. You can take a walk down into the cool fern grove and admire the imposing limestone boulders that tower over both sides of the trail, or relax on the “Lofty Fig” deck, where you will have the opportunity to purchase local delicacies and Bahamian refreshments.

Visit the Rand Nature Center

For those looking to get to know the local flora and fauna, a short trip from the port to the Rand Nature Center is just the ticket. An absolute paradise for nature lovers, the picturesque 100 acres here can satisfy your birding fix, offering viewing opportunities for dozens of species that reside in the park year round.

The Rand Nature Center also offers a 2,000-foot trail through the pine forest that has educational signs and exhibits to learn about the flora and fauna on view as well as traditional Bahamian culture, and even exhibits from local visual artists.

Take a Tour of Freeport

If you’re looking to get to know the local culture, a tour of Freeport will be the way to go. You’ll knock off all of Freeport’s highlights and landmarks during a 3-hour sightseeing tour of the island. Tours will be routed and customized differently, but in general, all will include some mix of the following attractions.

Millionaires Row, Freeport’s version of Beverly Hills, is a popular tour stop to admire the mansions as well as enjoying some duty-free shopping at a local liquor shop (for fans of Caribbean rum), and a bustling open-air fruit market for those looking for some local, fresh treats. You’ll also waltz through the ever-popular Garden of the Groves to get to know the local birds and plants, as well as visiting a gorgeous little hillside chapel. You can even visit entertainer Count Baisie’s home all while getting information and fun tidbits from your guide.

Make sure you don’t miss out on visiting a conch vendor along the way to sample some conch salad, a local delicacy. You might even drop into Downtown Freeport to see the commercial business center and see how the locals go to work, the beach suburb of Port Lucaya, and tons of shops, restaurants, and more.

Tour Freeport on Four Wheels

Want a little extra adventure with your tour of Grand Bahama? Then we recommend taking a ride on an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) tour.

You’ll be amazed by the variety in terrain you’ll encounter on your tour through the island, from Grand Lucayan Waterway out through the thick jungle and all the way out to the lovely Garden of the Groves, picture-perfect beaches, stopping at panoramic viewpoints along the way. Keep an eye out for wildlife while you soak up the sun and drive past lush vegetation, waterfalls, and more.

You’ll get a brief lesson on how to drive your ATV and some practice time before you venture out on your tour, but no prior experience is required. Most tours will also include transfer to and from the port.

Go for a Ride on Four Legs at Pinetree Stables

Looking for a more romantic way to explore the island? How about via horseback?

Pinetree Stables gives you the opportunity to ride local born and bred horses to some of the most beautiful parts of Freeport during a 2-hour ride. Make your way through a variety of terrain, including sand dunes to the ocean and a pine forest. You’ll need reservations for this one!   Check out this .

For Those Looking to Shop and Eat

Shopping and local delicacies are no doubt some of the biggest reasons people visit Freeport. And boy does Freeport ever deliver on both ends!

Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth

If you’re craving a little something sweet, make sure you stop into Bootleg Chocolates & Café located in the Port Lucaya Marketplace. This longtime family owned and operated establishment has been serving up hand-crafted treats for generations, using fine European chocolate as well as fresh ingredients and spices native to the Bahamas, giving these sweets a true Caribbean twist.

A Unique Christmas Tale

Can’t get enough of the holiday spirit? Check out the Junkanoo Museum of the Bahamas for a bit of a different take on Christmas. Here’s a preview:

“Junkanoo” refers to a celebration for slaves who were given time off at Christmas. The museum will educate visitors on this tradition as well as other aspects of Bahamian culture. Here you can sample traditional garments and fabrics as well as make masks and learn to dance to traditional Bahamian music. Tours are typically self-guided, but for a more immersive experience, we recommend hiring a guide.

Treat Yourself at Port Lucaya Marketplace

Looking to do some shopping while you’re on land! Port Lucaya Marketplace is the place to do it in Freeport. Located 12 miles from the harbor, Port Lucaya Marketplace offers more than 40 boutique shops and over 100 vendors selling everything from leather goods to handcrafted garments. There are also over a dozen restaurants to choose from if you need to break for a bite to eat. And the beach is just a short walk away once you’ve had your fix.

A Note on Bahamian Currency

Payment options in the Bahamas are fairly standard, as the Bahamian dollar is pegged to the U.S. dollar, meaning they are always equivalent. Since there are no exchange rates to worry about, you can use American cash if you’d like. There are also plenty of ATMs near the port so you can grab local currency when you arrive. It’s always a good idea to check with your bank for partner institutions when on vacation so you can draw cash without incurring transaction fees.

The islands do also accept most major credit cards, so if you prefer to pay plastic, you will be all set here. However, having some cash handy is advised to handle petty expenses, such as tipping guides, drivers, etc., and is the preferred method of payment in areas such as the Port Lucaya Marketplace, especially if you plan to haggle on prices (and you should).

Transportation Options in Freeport

It’s pretty easy to get around in Freeport, and as we mentioned, round-trip transportation will be included in most tours. However, if you prefer to go the DIY route, you will have several options available to you when you arrive.

Taxi rates are managed by the Bahamian government and will be metered, so you will have no problem finding a trustworthy ride. Taxis will be readily available in the port.

You can also rent a car if you choose or give public transportation a try if you are traveling from Freeport to Lucaya, but just make sure you give yourself enough time to get back to your ship on time for departure. Another fun and popular option is to rent a scooter to get around Grand Bahama’s flat, well-paved roads. There are dozens of scooter outfitters available right in the port.

Of, if you choose, Freeport is easily navigable on foot. Stretch your legs on land after spending some time at sea, but if you plan to go to Lucaya, you will need to arrange transportation to get there, as it is around 25 miles away.

Lies lies lies!!! I’m in Freeport for the last week and can’t even find something decent to eat. All and I mean all of the food and juices at our run down “resort” ocean seas is expired. Went to the so-called best restaurant on the island and it was horrible. Tried to order fish and they said they don’t have any. I repeat we are on an island and the restaurant doesn’t even have fish??!!?? Ended up spending a small fortune to get my family out of here early, but by far the best decision I have made this summer. Believe me I wish somebody could prove me wrong. What a waste of time and money.

The 9 best Bahamas cruises for every type of traveler

Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with the latest information.

The best Bahamas cru ises take you away from the daily grind, transporting you to theme park-like private islands and beach-lined paradises. Cruise choices include new and jazzed-up ships sailing an array of short and weeklong Bahamas itineraries. Cruising to the Bahamas is so easy you may even be able to go without a passport .

Family-friendly lines, such as Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Line, offer cruises focused on the Bahamas all year. So do newcomers Virgin Voyages, with its adults-only sailings, and Margaritaville at Sea, offering short two-night hops and longer cruise-and-stay packages. The winter and early spring seasons bring a handful of itineraries on premium lines like Celebrity Cruises and Holland America.

The only cruise lines that don’t regularly offer Bahamas cruises are the luxury lines. But don’t worry, luxe lovers: Many of the ships we included on our list of the best Bahamas cruises offer suites that come with concierge services, private enclaves or special spa privileges. If a luxury cruise to the Bahamas is your goal, look at the top suite options on a mainstream or premium line.

Whether you’re looking for a quick and cheap getaway or a week at the beach, here are the best Bahamas cruise itineraries to start your search, in order from shortest to longest.

2-night cruises on Margaritaville at Sea Paradise from Palm Beach, Florida

Though cruising is relatively new to the Margaritaville travel and hospitality franchise, cruise line Margaritaville at Sea is essentially a rebranding of the old Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line. Its refurbished ship, Paradise, originally debuted in the 1990s for Costa Cruises.

One Jimmy Buffett-themed makeover later, the ship is a perfect fit for the laid-back vibe of the Bahamas. Grab a drink or a bite to eat from the 5 o’Clock Somewhere Bar & Grill, try your luck at the Par-A-Dice Casino and enjoy plenty of entertainment, including the musical production, “Tales from Margaritaville: Jimmy’s Ship Show.” There’s a kids club, a teen club, a spa and two pools stocked with beach balls and inflatable parrots.

The two-night cruise itinerary includes one day in Freeport, where you can shop, hit the casino, enjoy water sports or chill on the beach. The ship offers shore excursions, or you can explore independently. Margaritaville at Sea also offers cruise-and-stay itineraries of either four or six nights (including the two nights onboard the ship). These packages let you choose between two partner hotels in Freeport, where you’ll stay two or four nights on land, then hop back on the ship for your return night at sea.

Margaritaville at Sea Paradise carries around 1,300 passengers in an assortment of inside and ocean-view cabins, all around 176 square feet, which is larger than the average for those categories on most mainstream ships. Ten suites with balconies are also available, with 524 square feet of space.

Who should go? Obviously, Parrotheads are gonna want to try this ship, with all its Jimmy Buffett-inspired themes and decor, but it’s also a good trial run for anyone on the fence about cruising. Pricing makes this a great cruise to enjoy an escape without spending a fortune. We found weekday sailings that begin at $99 per person based on double occupancy for an inside cabin.

3- or 4-night cruises on Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas from Miami

This itinerary may be the best overall short Bahamas cruise. Both the three- and four-night cruises have stops at Nassau and Royal Caribbean ‘s massive private island — Perfect Day at CocoCay . Those two stops combined give cruisers the opportunity to enjoy water sports, spend some time at the beach and experience a bit of Bahamian culture.

Freedom of the Seas has plenty of onboard fun to occupy travelers of all ages on sea days. It’s loaded with top-deck slides and water features, specialty restaurant choices and more entertainment options than you can take in on a short cruise. Carrying around 4,000 cruise guests, Freedom of the Seas is big enough to impress without being overwhelming.

Plus, logistics for cruising out of Miami are simple enough for even first-time cruisers. From flight choices to pre- or post-cruise hotels, it’s a city that caters to tourists, especially the cruising ones.

Who should go? From first-timers to veteran cruisers, anyone looking for a short but fun-filled hop to the Bahamas should give Freedom of the Seas a look. Families looking for a quick escape will find entertainment and activities for toddlers to teens. The ship is also ideal for family reunions, bachelorette parties and birthday cruises. Couples will love the adults-only Solarium with its extra-large hot tubs looking out over the sea.

3- or 4-night cruises on Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas from Port Canaveral, Florida

When Royal Caribbean’ s giant Utopia of the Seas debuts in July 2024, it will offer a bevy of short sailings, including three- and four-night sailings from Port Canaveral, Florida. The 236,860-ton, 5,669-passenger vessel will be the second-largest cruise ship in the world and offer more exciting amenities than any other cruise ship sailing short itineraries in North America.

Why? The newest, biggest ships in the world typically sail longer cruises. Offering short cruises on its humongous Oasis Class ships is new for Royal Caribbean; sister ship Allure of the Seas will test out the concept before Utopia launches.

Families with kids will definitely go bananas over the choices on board the new ship. The top deck alone will feature three separate pool areas, a surfing simulator, a kiddie splash zone, a basketball court, two rock walls, a miniature golf course and even a zip line.

The ship will also boast an extensive selection of restaurants, bars, lounges and shops. Additionally, there will be an indoor skating rink, a spa and a showroom with Broadway-style shows.

Utopia of the Seas’ inaugural voyage is set for July 22, 2024, and will be a four-night cruise to Nassau and the line’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay. The second sailing will be a three-night cruise to the Bahamas that departs on July 26, 2024.

Who should go?  Short sailings on this new ship will appeal to all sorts of cruisers. Historically, new ships are reserved for longer itineraries, so this is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy a snack-size sampling of a brand-new ship without spending the money on a longer sailing.

Families craving a quick getaway where the entire brood is satisfied will not be disappointed. In addition to seemingly endless kid-friendly amenities and top-notch children’s programming, Utopia of the Seas will feature a casino and adults-only spaces.

3- or 4-night cruises on Disney Wish from Port Canaveral, Florida

Disney waited a decade to build its next new ship, but Disney dreamers had their wish granted in 2022. Even better, the new Disney Wish cruises to the Bahamas. Designed to be the perfect complement to a visit to Orlando’s Disney theme parks, these short cruises visit Nassau and Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay. The four-night itinerary adds a sea day to enjoy the ship.

Disney Wish is designed to immerse cruisers in the various Disney worlds through technology. An onboard augmented reality game turns the Disney Cruise Line Navigator smartphone app into a virtual spyglass that lets cruisers participate in a fantasy adventure with Disney and Pixar characters. The AquaMouse waterslide combines a splashy tube ride in a two-seater raft with a pre-adventure tale told through screens at the beginning of the ride. Diners at the Worlds of Marvel restaurant take part in an interactive Avengers-themed experience through videos and special effects.

Wish carries 4,000 passengers in cabins and suites designed to simplify cruising with kids. But never fear, adult Disney fans; you’ll also find your spot on board. From the “Star Wars”-themed Hyperspace Lounge to the Quiet Cove adults-only sun deck, Disney manages to cater to grownups as well as kids.

Who should go ? This is obviously the best Bahamas cruise for lovers of all things Disney, including “Star Wars” and Marvel fans.

3- or 4-night cruises on Celebrity Reflection from Fort Lauderdale

Beginning in April 2024, Celebrity Cruises will sail three- and four-night voyages round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, year-round.

The 3,046-passenger Celebrity Reflection will offer a consistent rotation of three-night weekend cruises (departing each Friday and returning each Monday morning) and four-night weekday sailings (departing each Monday and returning each Friday morning).

Itineraries will include stops at Key West in Florida and Nassau and Bimini in the Bahamas.

Celebrity appeals mostly to the 40-plus set sans small children. It’s light on the kid-centric attractions (such as waterslides, go-karts and laser tag) that other big-ship lines include. The line offers instead lots of quiet and relaxing pool and lounge areas. (If you do have kids in tow, you can take advantage of the extensive children’s program, Camp at Sea. It provides supervised activities daily for children ages 3-12 in dedicated spaces.)

Celebrity Reflection is the line’s last and largest Solstice Class cruise ship. The Solstice C lass ships feature some of the most stylish outdoor pool decks at sea, with indoor, adults-only pool areas that, notably, are topped with glass panels embedded with solar panels that contribute to the ship’s power grid. You’ll also find large spas, casinos, showrooms and a nice selection of restaurants on board.

This ship also boasts one of the most spectacular suites in the cruising world — the 1,646-square-foot Reflection Suite. It was the first two-bedroom suite on a Celebrity Cruises vessel.

Who should go? This an ideal cruise for older travelers who are new to cruising and want to sample one or frequent cruisers who might prefer a shorter time at sea. Although Celebrity doesn’t draw many families with young children, the shorter Bahamas itineraries are also perfect for multigenerational family groups seeking an affordable cruise that appeals to all ages.

4-night cruises on Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady from Miami

Virgin Voyages aimed to be a disrupter in the cruise market from the beginning — creating a product designed to please even those who claim they would never set foot on a cruise ship. Yet the itinerary for this four-night Bahamas cruise on Scarlet Lady is fairly ordinary. Ports of call include Key West and a private beach club on the Bahamian island of Bimini.

It’s the ship itself that sets this cruise apart from the pack. You’ll find unique cabins (with balcony hammocks), brash red livery and one-of-a-kind onboard activities, such as tattoo parlors, drag shows and ‘80s-themed fitness classes, to keep its 2,700 sailors (as Virgin calls its passengers) entertained.

Who should go ? This is the best Bahamas cruise for the non-cruiser who is either young at heart or young and eager to party aboard this glitzy ship. If you’re easily offended by loud music, round-the-clock partying or sexual innuendo, this is not your Bahamas cruise.

4-day cruises on Norwegian Jade from Miami

Norwegian Cruise Line offers four-day sailings from Miami aboard Norwegian Jade. Ports of call include Key West and Great Stirrup Cay, the line’s private island.

Port diversions consist of touring the Key West Shipwreck Treasures Museum and the Key West Aquarium, shopping along Nassau’s Bay Street and exploring the white-sand beaches and pristine waters on Great Stirrup Cay.

The 2,402-passenger vessel is part of the line’s Jewel class of ships. Though the ship launched in 2006, it received a substantial refurbishment in 2017 that included a cabin remodel, new and expanded dining and a design overhaul.

Norwegian Jewel might not have the extensive top-deck attractions of newer ships, like Norwegian Prima, or as many restaurants and bars. However, passengers will find plenty to occupy their time onboard with scheduled activities, a casino, spa and pool areas.

Who should go? Families, couples and friend groups will appreciate the unstructured nature of a Norwegian cruise. The line’s “freestyle cruising” mantra — cruising without rigid dining schedules, dress codes and formal nights — is perfectly suited for short sailings. With a wide range of eateries and no assigned seating times, passengers have lots of flexibility for their limited time at sea.

Related: Best time to cruise to the Bahamas

5-night cruises on Carnival Sunshine from South Carolina

I am a huge lover of five-night sailings. They are long enough to scratch the cruise itch and short enough to account for travel time to and from the port without adding any extra vacation days. Plus, the slightly longer itineraries are less popular with hard partiers who can be disruptive on shorter Bahamas cruises.

Carnival Cruise Line offers 10 different five-night sailings from Charleston, South Carolina, aboard the 3,002-passenger Carnival Sunshine. It’s currently Carnival’s oldest ship (it debuted in 1996 under the name Carnival Destiny). However, in 2013, the line gave it a $200 million bow-to-stern glow-up and renamed it Carnival Sunshine. The overhaul produced a new top-deck WaterWorks water park, a comedy club and several bars, lounges and restaurants.

Depending on which itinerary you choose, you can chill out on the beaches of Bimini, shop Nassau’s iconic straw market or go horseback riding by the shore of Carnival’s private island, Half Moon Cay. Consider a pre- or post-cruise stay in Charleston to take in the city’s historic landmarks, epic dining and charming cobblestone streets.

Who should go? These cruises are the best Bahamas sailings for those who prefer the intimacy of an older ship and don’t care about flashy amenities and onboard attractions on newer vessels. Plus, they’re ideal for travelers who live north of Florida and are looking for a more convenient drive-to departure port.

8-night cruises on Carnival Venezia from New York City

The 4,090-passenger Carnival Venezia is a bit of an outlier in Carnival Cruise Line’s fleet. Originally built for Italy-based Costa Cruises and launched in 2019, it joined the Carnival family in May 2023. (Carnival Corporation is the parent company of both Costa and Carnival.)

The ship was renovated to add many of Carnival’s signature venues. However, many of its Costa-aligned, Italian-themed designs remain, including a real gondola “sailing” down the middle of its main dining room and a pool deck built to look like a Venetian boulevard.

Guests might feel like they’ve been whisked away to Italy thanks to regional touches like the handmade Italian gelato at JavaBlue Cafe and the Italian liqueur-infused concoctions found at many bars.

Two eight-night voyages out of New York City include stops at Freeport, Nassau and Half Moon Cay.

Who should go? This Bahamas cruise is ideal for anyone looking for a different Carnival experience during a weeklong cruise. It’s almost like traveling to Italy and the Bahamas in one trip.

Bottom line

The best Bahamas cruises offer something cruisers can’t quite get enough of — whether it’s beach time or party time. While short sailings are still the most popular Bahamas itineraries, you can find options for almost every cruising style. Lucaya: The Best Free Public Beach for your Day in Freeport

by Prof. Cruise · Published March 29, 2019 · Updated June 26, 2019

freeport bahamas cruise port

On our first cruise to Freeport, aboard the Carnival Sensation, we were planning a beach day. If we ever made it!

A Rescue at Sea

A lot of things broke down that morning and Prof. Cruise’s T.A. “H” wondered if he’d ever get to eat sand again. We arrived in Freeport two hours late because we stopped to render aid to a small boat in distress.  Well done Captain, but step on the gas – we’ve had our shovel and bucket packed for 3 months!

freeport bahamas cruise port

And on Land!

As you know by now, Prof. Cruise is cheap, so she was particularly excited for this free-port and was confused as to why they were pushing expensive excursions. Eric, the unfortunate man who wedded Prof. Cruise, who is also a lawyer, gave up on trying to explain to her why she couldn’t sue for false advertising and suggested she let it go so we could head to the public beach at Lucaya which he assured her was, in fact, free.

We got in line for a shared taxi, and watched as the newer model vans passed us by. Instead, we got directed to a van born before Prof. Cruise (and she’s oooooooooold). There was a strong smell of gasoline in the air, but a petroleum storage facility was nearby, so we just chose to believe it was coming from there.

freeport bahamas cruise port

Denial is a powerful thing, people – Prof. Cruise’s gray hairs are “highlights” and this van – that was probably sold to the taxi company after being donated to “Cars for Kids” for the tax write-off after it died and sat on someone’s front lawn for 15 years – will get us to Lucaya beach. After a spirited, but ultimately futile “I think I can, I think I can,” our van bit the dust right in front of the petroleum tanks. Go figure.

Prof. Cruise gave her (the van) a quick pep talk about the perks of retirement, “you can eat dinner at 3:45pm and only get charged the lunch price and you’ll have more time to travel,” and we were ushered into a newer model. I guess you could call her the trophy wife of vans.

freeport bahamas cruise port

The Free Beach at Free port

Our van dropped off at the Casino where Eric was never to be seen again.  Just kidding, he only went in there to “use the restroom.”  Eric paid our $10 each (round trip – lap kids are free) out of sight of Prof. Cruise to avoid, “what part of free don’t these people understand,” then we walked across the parking lot and down a little concrete path to the beach.

We plopped our towels next to some fancy lounge chairs and before H could even refuse to put on his sun hat, we were asked to leave. It was a private section of the beach, not for the likes of Prof. Cruise! So we moved on and found a spot among the rest of the underlings…

freeport bahamas cruise port

…where the sand was just as soft, the sun just as warm, the view just as beautiful, and the sounds of a very happy H, just as sweet.

freeport bahamas cruise port

Lucaya Beach in Freeport, Take Two

We didn’t have any travel delays on our second trip to Freeport, this time aboard the Carnival Pride. But you should know that Freeport is one of those ports where, when the captain pulls in, you might be thinking, “did we take a wrong turn?” And you might ask yourself if anyone signed up for excursions to the shipping yard and refinery. “No wonder this place is free.”

freeport bahamas cruise port

Not H, though, he was EXCITED to wake up to a pristine view of “lifters” loading up a giant container ship. And Prof. Cruise was happy to be in a place where real people live and work, with a little taste (and smell) of “gritty” to help one appreciate the natural beauty of the place. I mean, H wouldn’t appreciate orange sherbet so much on vacation if Prof. Cruise didn’t make him eat tofu and flax seeds at home.

Shared Vans for Hire in Freeport

Anyway, our plan was to take a van to Lucuya beach again. Here’s a photo of where the vans pick you up.  There was list of destinations and prices posted – Lucaya was $10 round trip per person again. Lap kids were free.

freeport bahamas cruise port

Our van driver, J.H. (the John Heald of the Bahamas, perhaps?), wasn’t an overly friendly, oddly sized talking animal dressed in clothes akin to Mickey, but he was definitely a character. We lucked out because it was Bahamas Independence Day, so we got a history lesson on the way to the beach.  And the same one on the return trip, as we had the same driver.

The Bahamas gained independence after 325 years of British rule on July 10, 1973 with NO BLOOD SHED. J.H. was very proud of that and mentioned it several hundred times. He also discussed many other interesting things about the island and answered questions.  Prof. Cruise really enjoyed it the first time around and, because her memory is so bad, the second time around too.

CRUISE PASSENGER GOES MISSING IN FREEPORT! Last Seen: Casino Near Lucaya

freeport bahamas cruise port

After getting dropped off at the Casino (now closed) where Eric was never to be seen again – that joke never gets old – we made our way through the parking lot, behind the police station, down a narrow concrete path, to, seemingly nowhere, and across the sand to one of the most beautiful beaches H had ever seen (he’d only seen, like, 4, but still, it was really pretty).

freeport bahamas cruise port

Like Grand Turk , the last time we visited Lucaya in Freeport we turned LEFT. This time we turned RIGHT. With a similar result.

freeport bahamas cruise port

If you turn LEFT at Lucaya you will pass a private resort beach (you can get day passes to this place, so that’s an option if you’re not holding Freeport to that “free” part) and, after a bit of a long walk, will land at a very small, somewhat crowded, public section. If you turn RIGHT, on the other hand, you will walk mere steps to a much more secluded public section of beach (although there are some water activities/private excursions that launch from this area…another option) with perfect sand, water, views, and free lounge chairs, AKA giant rocks.

freeport bahamas cruise port

Some people stay on the ship at more popular ports to have the place to themselves. At Freeport, get off the ship – because many people choose to stay on – and have the right side of Lucaya beach almost totally to yourself. Freeport may not actually be free, but it can still be pretty great!

Just a heads up, there are no Private beaches in the Bahamas. you can sit anywhere you like on any beach. now, you can’t use the chairs and the umbrellas, but you can use the sand.

I have vacationed in the bahamas since 2004 so i’ve been to most beaches on the island.

Thanks for the info. That’s great to know! I wonder why they booted us out? Hopefully others will now know to say, “sorry if you think I’m trashing up the place, but it’s a public beach and I’ll sit here if I like.”

The Best Cruises You Don't Need a Passport For

U.S. travelers don't need passports to take these memorable cruise itineraries—even though they make international stops.

By Gwen Pratesi

July 17, 2024

If you’re among the 52% of Americans without a passport , you might think that taking a cruise is out of the question for you.

But that’s not true—and we’re not only referring to sailings within U.S. waters (though, of course, passengers without passports can absolutely board cruises on U.S. rivers and coastlines as well as to Hawaii and Alaska).

Depending on the destination and the type of cruise, there are many options for ocean journeys that don’t require a passport even though they go to international destinations in the Caribbean, Mexico, and Canada.

We’ve rounded up some of your best bets for passport-free cruises at home and abroad.

How to Cruise Internationally Without a Passport: Book a "Closed-Loop" Cruise

A “closed-loop” cruise is a round-trip voyage that begins and ends in the same U.S. port. As U.S. Customs and Border Protection explains , U.S. citizens do not need a valid passport to take a closed-loop cruise, even if the ship makes stops at foreign ports of call along the way, provided those stops are in the Western Hemisphere.

For an example, the federal agency states that if you board a cruise ship in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and, after visiting, say, Bermuda or Mexico’s Caribbean coast, the ship returns to Fort Lauderdale, you’ve taken a closed-loop cruise. No passport required.

“However,” the agency continues, “if you board a cruise ship in San Diego, California, sail through the Panama Canal (stopping at a foreign port during the cruise), and end the cruise in Miami, Florida, you have not taken a closed loop cruise.” Every passenger on board will need a valid passport, even though the voyage starts and ends in the United States.

For the closed-loop option, however, a passenger needs only proof of U.S. citizenship, such as an Enhanced Driver’s License or a certified copy of a government-issued birth certificate along with a photo ID, such as a state-issued valid driver’s license. Passengers under age 16 can get by with an “original, notarized or certified” birth certificate.

Keep in mind that these are the policies of U.S. Customs and Border Protection only. It’s possible that a foreign destination on your itinerary may still require a passport to enter, even on a closed-loop cruise. Always confirm entry requirements with your cruise line and destination country before you book a trip.

And if you do have a passport, it’s smart to bring it along on a cruise with international stops even if you won’t need to produce the document. After all, a passport will come in handy if there’s an emergency and you need to fly back into the U.S. from a foreign country.

freeport bahamas cruise port

The Best International Destinations for Closed-Loop Cruises from the U.S.

Here are a few examples of itineraries where you can sail without a passport on a closed-loop cruise.

The Caribbean

Round-trip voyages to Caribbean destinations such as the British Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic, and the Cayman Islands are available from many ports in the U.S., including New Orleans; Galveston, Texas; and several cities in Florida. Departing from Miami, you can reserve a stateroom on one of the larger vessels from the likes of Celebrity Cruises, MSC Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, Virgin Voyages, and Holland America Line.

Some Caribbean itineraries might be for just 4 or 5 days in length, but there are longer weeklong voyages, too. To hit a pretty wide range of foreign ports without a passport on a single trip, consider one of Royal Caribbean’s 7-day Western Caribbean round-trip sailings from Miami, with stops in Cozumel, Mexico; Belize City, Belize; Roatán, Honduras; and Costa Maya, Mexico.

If the cruise line has its own private island, like MSC’s Ocean Cay , the sailing might include a stop there as well. For example, MSC’s round-trip Eastern Caribbean and Bahamas cruise departs from Miami and stops at Ocean Cay as well as Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Nassau, Bahamas.

Other cruise lines with private islands include Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Disney, Princess, and Holland America.

Remember that since Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are part of the United States, you won’t need a passport to go there, even if your ship isn’t on a closed loop (provided the departure city and return city are both in the U.S., of course).

Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and Princess Cruises offer round-trip voyages from Los Angeles that visit popular Pacific Coast and Baja destinations such as Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, and Mazatlán. You’ll also find Baja Peninsula itineraries sailing round-trip from San Diego with Holland America .

If you prefer to sail from ports in Florida or Galveston, Texas, consider Caribbean itineraries that include destinations in Mexico, such as Royal Caribbean’s Western Caribbean voyage from Miami mentioned above. Some lines, like Carnival , also include the town of Progreso , near the Yucatán capital of Mérida, on departures from Galveston.

The Bahamas

For cruises to the Bahamas, one appealing option is to embark in Port Canaveral, Florida, where you can book shorter 3- and 4-night cruises with several lines, including Norwegian . That company’s 4-night itineraries visit the Bahamas ports of Nassau, Freeport, and Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian’s private island.

Disney fans with kids in tow can book a 6-day Bahamas voyage with Disney Cruise Line that goes from Port Canaveral to both of the company’s private islands: Castaway Cay and the new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.

Set sail to see Bermuda’ s famed pink sand beaches from Atlantic Coast ports including New York City; Bayonne, New Jersey; Boston; Baltimore; and Port Canaveral, Florida. Seven-day sailings from New York operated by MSC and Norwegian feature time at sea as well as 3 days moored at the Royal Naval Dockyard in Bermuda’s West End.

With 3 days in port on an island that’s just 21 miles in length, you’ll have plenty of time to explore iconic Horseshoe Bay beach, go diving in the shipwreck capital of the Atlantic, and stroll among the pastel-colored buildings in the capital city of Hamilton.

Atlantic Canada

In the fall, leaf peepers can depart round-trip from several East Coast ports, including New York City, Baltimore, and Boston, for cruises showing off the seasonal splendor of New England as well as Nova Scotia and other parts of Maritime Canada. Princess, MSC, Norwegian, and Carnival are among your best bets for these popular itineraries.

If you book your cruise for earlier in the season (through October), keep an eye out for several species of whales, including humpbacks and minkes, when sailing through the Bay of Fundy. No matter when you sail, you’ll have plenty of chances to sample local seafood specialties such as clam chowder, Maine lobster, and Prince Edward Island mussels.

The Best U.S. Cruise Destinations—No Passport Required

Travelers in search of unforgettable landscapes, remote wilderness areas, abundant wildlife, and once-in-a-lifetime adventures (such as dog-sledding on a glacier), can book a cruise to Alaska from the Port of Seattle. Seven-day Inside Passage voyages are available with several lines, including Holland America, Norwegian, Celebrity, and Royal Caribbean. If you want to go with a line that’s an expert in the region, Holland America has been sailing to Alaska for more than 75 years. Princess is a close second with 65 years of experience.

Ports of call and scenic cruising day locations vary, depending on the line, but voyages typically include stops in Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan, and Victoria, British Columbia. For longer 10- or 11-day cruises, opt for a round-trip itinerary departing from San Francisco.

A few cruise lines, including Celebrity and Norwegian, operate round-trip itineraries from Honolulu. If you’d prefer not to fly to Hawaii , you can set sail on a longer cruise from the West Coast.

Princess ’s 16-day voyages depart from either Los Angeles or San Francisco and include stops in four islands in Hawaii as well as the port of Ensenada, Mexico. Carnival has a similar 14-day voyage from Los Angeles.

For the ultimate Hawaiian cruise, Holland America’s 18-day Circle Hawaii itinerary from San Diego visits five ports of call on four Hawaiian Islands, plus Ensenada, before returning to San Diego.

U.S. Rivers and Coastal Waters

In the Lower 48, travelers have plenty of options to travel the country’s waterways aboard a small-ship river or coastal cruise.

American Cruise Lines maintains a portfolio of more than 50 itineraries plied by a fleet of riverboats, coastal cruise ships, and classic paddlewheelers accommodating 90 to 180 guests at a time. You can sail the Lower or Upper Mississippi River, head for the Pacific Northwest’s Snake and Columbia rivers, take a fall cruise to see the foliage along the Hudson River Valley in New York State, and more.

You can even travel between several national parks on a land-and-sea adventure that includes visits to Yellowstone, Glacier, and Grand Teton national parks. For a coastal cruise, the line features itineraries in New England, the Southeast, Florida, Alaska, along the Chesapeake Bay, and in Washington State’s Puget Sound to visit the San Juan Islands. None of the voyages from American Cruise Lines requires a passport.

Viking has 10 river cruise options along the Mississippi, ranging from 8 to 22 days in length and running from New Orleans to the Midwest. And UnCruise Adventures offers passport-free voyages that sail exclusively within the U.S., too, with itineraries in Hawaii as well as Alaska voyages that do not sail into Canadian waters.
