Situated on the northern bank of the Orange River just 48 km north-east of Colesberg and 28km from Tzamenkomst, is the town of Gariep. It is nestled between the hills and scattered around the tip of the southern Free State. It is for being home to the largest manmade dam in South Africa, the Gariep Dam.

Interestingly enough, Gariep was never meant to be a town. It was only because of the dam, that the town came into existence and this all happened almost by accident. When the dam was constructed, a prefab town was set up to house the workers. This was to be a temporary measure just until the dam was completed. The demolition of some of these houses was carried out soon after the project was completed in 1969. By this time, the dam had already attracted a lot of people to the area so it was decided to keep the rest of the houses intact. Gariep has since grown from a town that almost never was, into a place with tremendous tourism potential. If you are staying at Tzamenkomst, it is definitely worth a visit.

About Gariep Dam

The Gariep Dam can only be described as a masterpiece of civil engineering. The sheer magnificence of this 100km long and 24km wide dam can testify to that. If you travel at around 100km per hour, it will take you almost an hour to pass the dam. It is the largest storage reservoir in South Africa and arguably the most picturesque and impressive body of water you may ever see. Formerly known as “Hendrik Verwoerd Dam,” the name was officially changed on the 4 th of October 1996 to Gariep Dam.

The spectacular beauty of Gariep Dam draws visitors from all around the country and all over the world. From the early days, the Gariep Dam has played a crucial role in the lives of many South Africans. It provides power, water, jobs and almost endless tourism potential. Tzamenkomst is strategically placed between Gariep Damd and Colesberg.

There are clean toilet facilities and a braai area in case you get the urge to throw some meat on the coals. A camera is a must as the dam wall and the scenery around it are truly something to be remembered.

Visit the Gariep Dam Nature Reserve

Situated on the northern banks of the Gariep Dam is the Gariep Dam Nature Reserve. Neighboured by small stock farmers and private land owners, the reserve provides a variety of game and birds for viewing.

Most of the reserve incorporates the massive Gariep Dam and game sanctuary with the vegetation being typical of a dry Karoo landscape. It offers visitors an array of activities including bird-watching, angling, bush camp picnics, game drives, water sports, and the chance to view the spectacular wildlife.

Gariep Dam Reserve provides a sanctuary to wildlife that includes to the endangered Cape mountain zebra, ostriches, blue wildebeest, eland, springbok, hartebeest and more. If you’re lucky enough, you can spot rarely sighted animals such as the bat-eared fox, the aardwolf, a few species of wild cats as well as other small mammals.

The reserve is also a bird lover’s paradise and boasts as many as 242 different species. Expect to see fish eagles, blue cranes, martial eagles, bustards and many more. For the water bird enthusiasts there are Egyptian geese, spur winged geese, Cape teals, and yellow billed and white-faced ducks among many others. Species of fish include mudfish, yellowfish, barbell, and carp.

The Lake Gariep tourism route is a circular route on the banks of the lake. The town, Gariep Dam, is the ideal location to use as a basis to explore this unique tourism route. The tourism route is rich in culture, recent history and offers various adventure tourism activities and eco-tourism activities in three provincial game reserves on the shores of the lake. From Gariep Dam, the route takes one to Oviston. Here one can appreciate the inlet to the Fish River Tunnel. From Oviston, one drives through the little town of Venterstad on-route to South Africa’s longest bridge at Bethulie. Near Bethulie, one can visit the concentration camp graveyard, which is together with the graveyard at Norvalspont, a sullen reminder of the Anglo Boer war of 1899 to 1902.

More About Gariepdam

‘The place of great dryness’, ‘Nu-Gariep’ and the ‘plains of Camdeboo’ are names which have, in the past, been given to this vast land of flat-topped koppies and stunned vegetation. Ironically enough, this vast dryness became the spot for South Africa’s largest inland lake:

The name ‘Gariep’ is derived from the San explanation of ‘Red Waters’. The Gariep Dam is located within the Karoo Heartland and is the largest fresh water expanse in South Africa. It is situated on the Orange River with a shoreline of 435 km and a surface area of 360 square km. Construction was completed in 1971 and officially opened on the 4th of March 1972. It is known as one of the country’s greatest civil engineering projects. The dam wall has a height of 88 metres, and the length of the wall is 914 metres. Two underground tunnels deposit water into the Fish-and-Sundays Rivers, thus enabling substantial irrigation farming in the remote areas of the Eastern Cape Province. The hydro-electric power generated supplies areas as far as Cape Town and Gauteng Province.

The little town of Gariep Dam was one of eight construction towns that were built in the early 1960’s to house the construction workers of the Orange River Scheme. It was decided during the planning phases of the project that the Gariep Dam, together with its construction town, would become an inland tourist haven. Development was, however, hindered by the fact that nobody could get ownership of their property.

The proclaiming of Gariep Dam as Municipality in 1994 was a great step forward and after the property was officially transferred to the Municipality in 2000, the ball was set for development.

Consequently Gariep Dam is the youngest town in the entire Free State Province and was presented with the ‘Volksblad town of the year’ award. It is situated a mere 5 km off the N1, on tarred roads. It is approximately 185 km south of Bloemfontein and 45 km north of Colesberg. Gariep Dam boasts with an Airfield with a 2 km tarred runway.

South Africa’s largest water storage reservoir, the Gariep Dam, is placed on the Orange River between the Northern Cape and the Free State just 30 kilometres east of Colesberg.

Apart from serving an important function - supplying water to parts of the Vaal, Fish and Sundays catchments and irrigation along the Orange River itself - the Gariep Dam also lies in one of the most beautiful gorges at the entrance to the Ruigte Valley. The Gariep Dam is a concrete gravity-arch hybrid design, chosen because the gorge was too wide for a complete arch, hence the use of flanking walls that stand 88 meters high with a crest length of 914 meters.

These measures may be of interest but they conceal the beauty of this incredible man-made lake that is more than 100 kilometers long and 24 kilometers wide and provides a body of water over which to glide - international gliding championships take place here every year - and for water sports.

The Town by the name Gariep Dam was built here during the 1960s, one of the youngest villages in the country built to house the dam’s labour force and now a holiday resort that serves the dam.

We thoroughly enjoyed our overnight stay at View Lodge. The 180 degree view is superb. Lana the host is lovely and so helpful. The view of the sunrise over Gariep Dam was amazing. Very comfortable and well appointed room. We would definitely stay over again!

Room was very comfortable, Hostess very friendly, breakfast excellent.

The current host at View Lodge is Lana and I have to say that after the welcome she gave us we'd have loved it regardless! It's a great place to stay, great views, interesting history too. Coffee plunger AND ground coffee supplied which is extremely rare in my (world-wide 🤣) experience. We definitely recommend it.

We had lovely stay. Will for sure come again and for longer.

We had a really nice time at View Lodge. It's clean and neat and the views are lovely. The area is quiet and peaceful and was a nice getaway from the hustle and bustle. The host was friendly and helpful and I appreciated that they cared about the little things like soap in the bathroom and dishwashing liquid, milk, water and water in the fridge and even went as far as to leave a sweet on the bed for each guest. They even had an electric blanket on the bed which I loved! I found it very thoughtful and appreciate the effort as not all guesthouses and lodges bother with the finer details. So I would definitely recommend View Lodge !

GARIEP DAM NATURE RESERVE/RESORT

What climatic conditions can be expected.

The climate is also typical of the Karoo with high summer and low winter temperatures. The annual rainfall varies between 300mm and 500mm per annum.

The landscape, plants and animals

The reserve is 16500 ha in size and is neighbored by private land owners, mostly small stock farmers. It is divided into two management sections of which the one part of 6000ha is fenced off with a game proof fence. This section is accessible to the public and provides a variety of game and birds for viewing. The other section is not accessible to the public and is mainly utilized as a breeding camp for some of the largest herds of springbok and black wildebeest in the Free State.

This reserve of contrasts with its multiple kopjes and rocky ridges are connected by planes and the vegetation varies from grasses, herbs, small to medium sized shrubs and a few single standing trees, typical of a dry Karoo landscape.

Gariep Dam was completed in 1972 and is the largest human made water body in South Africa and with full capacity has a surface area of just over 36000ha. The 914m long and 88m high concrete construction forms a retaining wall that blocks up the water for about 80km.

  Wild olive and especially karee grows along the ridges, while the open veld consists of grass interspersed with Karoo bushes.

Animals that can be seen are eland, kudu, gemsbok, blue wildebeest, red hartebeest, blesbok, impala, springbok, mountain reedbuck, klipspringer, steenbok and duiker.   Other animals that also occur in this area but are not so regularly seen include the aardwolf, cape fox, bat-eared fox, porcupine, aardvark, brown hyena, and various species of wild cats, mongoose and other small mammals.

Gariep Nature Reserve also boasts with a bird population with as many as 242 different species.  Amongst these species are raptors such as the scarce tawny eagles, martial eagles, black eagles and numerous fish eagles with their call so peculiar to Africa. Larger bird species such as ostriches, blue cranes, secretary birds and bustards are regularly seen. Further is this reserve also the second recorded place in the Free State Province where the Namaqua sandgrouse breeds.  The water bird population includes a variety of water birds such as spur winged geese, Egyptian geese, South African shelducks, whitefaced ducks, yellow billed ducks, cape teals and lots more.

Fish species include carp, barbel, yellow fish and mudfish.

What facilities are available?

• Boardroom which can accommodate 16 people for meetings.
• Fully equipped 7 self catering chalets with carport and braai area:
• Three 4-bed chalets – two single beds per room
• Four luxury 6-bed chalets – two single beds per room(two rooms) and two single beds on upper level

For those who rather prefer camping there is a camping area with 15 stands supplied with electricity. There is also a communal ablution facility.

For the anglers there is an angling shore of about 10km.

Slipways and boathouses are available for the boating enthusiast.

No shops are available and visitors must bring their own provisions.

• The dam offers the serious angler a big challenge and hours of relaxation to the rest of the family.
• Visitors are welcome to walk through the reserve and enjoy the nature.
• 25 Kilometers of tourist roads allow visitors ample opportunity for game viewing.
• The retaining wall with 13.2km of passages inside the wall.
• The hydro-electric power station of ESKOM that supplies electricity to destinations as far as Gauteng and Cape Town. (Guided tours for the above-mentioned, can be booked at Water Affairs and ESKOM respectively)
• Gariep State Fish Hatchery.
• The Rubber-duck Nationals – The Gariep 500 is hosted annually in February.
• The international Gliding Championships is also hosted in December / Early January each year.

Karoo Queen Houseboat is a luxury houseboat located on the waters of the Gariep Dam. The Karoo Queen cruises for 2 nights, anchoring at different islands on the dam each night, giving guests the opportunity to enjoy their natural surroundings while experiencing true Karoo hospitality and cuisine. She consists of 7 bedrooms that can comfortably accommodate 14 guests. All the bedrooms are furnished with 2 single beds, and 6 rooms have an open-plan, en-suite shower. The seventh room has a separate bathroom fitted with a shower. Meals are served in the spacious living area with ample seating and dining space, which boasts all-around views of the dam. tHE eXPERIENCE eVENT sPACE dESCRIPTION

Welcome aboard The Experience, our 1,400 sqft two-story floating event space, situated on the stunning Lake Lanier. Our interior boasts a modern design with a focus on natural light, the 12 large picture frame windows provide breathtaking lake views to serve as your décor. The white marble floors with dramatic blue-gray veining complement the white leather furniture with chrome accents, as well as the cobalt blue barrel chairs and illuminated columns that adapt to every theme combining color and movement. 

For your comfort, our space is centrally heated and cooled and equipped with an 86-inch monitor for presentations, slideshows, or your favorite sports events. The interior also offers over 12 feet of serving space for catered events and a VIP lounge on the bow with breathtaking views of Lake Lanier while underway. 

The 2 bathrooms and smokers' lounge on the stern add to the convenience and luxury of our event space. The stern also features a bar and bartender area, a swim platform, and access to the spiral staircase that transports guests up to our party deck, providing 630 square feet of space for dancing, lounging, and soaking up the rays or entering the 2-story water slide that plunges you into the refreshing waters of Lake Lanier. 

The partially covered deck also boasts the latest and greatest club light technology for the ultimate nightclub experience leveraging our sound system that pumps out 10,000 watts of crisp sound you can feel in your chest.  Lastly, the entire vessel is wrapped with 10k pixel lights that can be choreographed to any song, providing your guests with a jaw-dropping visualization while on a beach, dockside or just drawing the attention of other boaters. 

The space is highly configurable to meet the needs of a wedding, celebration, casual get-together, or corporate outing.

• The party deck has 6 cafe tables and 40 chairs.  In warmer months, the deck is partially shaded in colder seasons, propane heaters and fire pits to keep guests warm in a partial enclosure.

• 2-story water slide and access to inflatable rafts, rings, etc.
• 1 Large 6'x2' cooler

EVENT AMENITIES

• Event planning services.   The event planning services have staff members who are affiliated with the National Event and Caterers Association.
• Customized itinerary for your Lake Lanier Experience
• Assistance with loading supplies, using transport equipment, and setting up for an event. They will also help package leftovers and load them into vehicles after the event.
• Island beaching or anchoring to allow for water activities and a complimentary group photo. (weather permitting)
• Guest of Honor entrance with walk-on music
• Electronic welcome banner displayed on interior 86" monitor to highlight event (Happy Birthday, Congratulations, etc.)
• Slideshow of up to 250 photos  highlighting the guest of honor, guests, customers, etc. on our monitors

Ice Package - $30

Don't bother with the inconvenience of sourcing your own ice - purchase our service and let us take care of everything for you. We keep a stock of 100lbs in our deep freeze to ensure we always have enough on hand, leaving you with one less thing to worry about on your hot summer cruise. No need to lug around 50lbs of ice - let us do the driving and the heavy lifting.

Jet Tubing- $225

Whether you're a novice or an experienced adrenaline junkie, hop onto our one or two-person tubes and get ready for a thrilling ride. Our skilled jet ski operator will tailor the ride to your age and level of ability, pushing you to test your physical and mental limits with every heart-pumping moment. Enjoy 15 exhilarating rides, each lasting two to three minutes. Get ready to hang on tight and feel the rush!

Pick Up/Drop Off- $125 - $500

Say goodbye to worries about driving after a night of celebration. If you're staying at a Lakehouse or any spot with a dock, we can pick you up and provide a safe ride back after the party. Consider the round trip time it takes us to reach your location as part of your access time or extend the fun by booking us for additional hours. Let the good times roll!

Clean Up Package- $300

 You've organized the party, you set up the party, you worked the crowd, had some fun yourself and now you just want to grab what's important to you and walk off the boat. $300 gets you that luxury. Walk off the boat with your crew and leave the aftermath to us. This fee also gives you the ability to smoke on the upper deck, without it, smokers are relegated to back 1st deck on the stern of the boat. 

What to Expect - Booking and Planning your Event

The party boat cannot be booked online.  With over 1,600 cruises under our belt,  our formula for success begins with a quick conversation with an event planning  specialists to ensure we can meet the needs of your event.  Whether its just a group of friends chilling out or a wedding, we are here to support your needs.  Specialists can be contacted Tuesday- Sunday between 10AM and 6PM at 678-882-8062 /Select option 3 or drop us an email at [email protected] to schedule an appointment. 

During the booking process we will cover the following:

• Confirm your event date/time and cruise length.
• Identify the basic needs of the event
• Schedule 3 planning sessions for a  deeper dive into your event needs.  These sessions will be done in person or via a virtual meeting/conference call from the party boat.
• Discuss inclement weather and cancelation  policies
• Collect payment information

Within 24 hours of your booking, you will receive:

• A confirmation email.  This will serve as our contract
• Project Plan
• Event Questionnaire
• Google Drive Link
• Catering Menus and Preferred Caterer Listing
• Beverage Order form
• General Liability Waivers

We recommend you complete the questionnaire and review the confirmation email prior to your first consult meeting in order to maximize the time.

The goal of these sessions is to familairize you with the boat and for us to understand your needs so we can ensure you are maximizing  everything The Experience offers.  The result is a detailed written itinerary that we use as a blueprint for a successful and memorable event that leaves your guests wondering how they will top it.

You choose your time slot

Access time may BEGIN anytime between the following and then extend through the length of your cruise:

• Afternoon Cruises start between 9AM  and 12PM 
• Evening and Sunset cruises start between 6PM - 8PM

Additional time can be added as well 

What to Expect - Day of Cruise

Your cruise will begin at Aqualand Marina, located in Flowery Branch.  Your resource team will meet you and your personal support team (your besties) of 4 in the parking lot 30 minutes prior to your start time to help you load in your supplies.  You will use this time to place your own personal touch, like decorations, food and drink.  

Your guests will remain on land  gathering in our waiting area until your Captain meets with your guests, provides a quick safety briefing and captures signatures on the general liability waivers.  The Captain will then escort your guests and together with the crew welcomes everyone on board.  Once all boarding activities are completed we sound the horn and depart to the beat of your playlist and cruise picturesque Lake Lanier. 

Enjoy your cruise to the beat of your own music over our multi-zone, Bluetooth enabled sound system as we meander around the islands of Lanier, taking advantage of all the photo ops the lake has to offer.  If interested, you can add on features to our standard 4 hour base package, to enhance your outing.  

At the conclusion of your cruise, we will arrive at the same location from where we departed about 15 minutes prior to your scheduled end time ,to give you and your guests a little time to gather belongings and disembark with the glow of Lake Lanier upon your soul.

Situated on Lake Allatoona,  Atlanta Yacht Club  has been home to small-boat pleasure and racing sailors for over 70 years.   All through the year  our shores are dappled with one-design sailing craft heading out for an afternoon on the water with friends and family.  

Whether they come for friendly competition, sailing classes, or just an opportunity to relax with a day on the lake, what binds our members and families to AYC is their commitment to the sport of sailing and their choice to spend their leisure time in an activity where everyone in the family can “play”.

The Atlanta Yacht Club is home to several active one-design racing fleets: Snipe, Thistle, Y-Flyer, Flying Scot, Laser, and Sunfish. The Junior Yacht Club trains in 420s and Optimist prams.  The club also hosts fleet-sponsored national regattas throughout the year.  We are known for our competitive racing and our hospitality!

My House Boat Party is an 86-foot by 16-foot space and can accommodate up to 70 wedding guests on the entire houseboat or between 25 to 30 people in the enclosed cabin. The houseboat’s upper deck features a partial shade cover, tables, chairs, and sun loungers are available. The boat also features a newly refurbished living room area with a television and poker table, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a full kitchen with a dining table, and a bar area.

My House Boat Party is ideal for hosting intimate wedding celebrations, such as small ceremonies and receptions. They offer a variety of event services to couples planning their special day in the Atlanta area including onboard DJ services by DJ Lionz himself, a boat captain, and a four-hour cruise on the houseboat. My House Boat Party also offers dock parties that include a DJ, which includes full access to everything on the boat. My House Boat Party recommends working with their preferred vendors who may offer special incentives and discounts for wedding events held on the boat. All fuel costs are included with the rental of the houseboat and additional services they are able to provide include lighting and sound equipment, food stations with servers, bar service with bartenders, event rentals, getting ready rooms, and parking.

Why Democrats Are Hopeful in North Carolina and Nervous in Georgia

President Biden’s campaign and its allies are targeting both battlegrounds — but only one state has a highly controversial Republican nominee lower on the ballot.

Democrats are starting to dream that President Biden can wrench North Carolina away from Donald J. Trump in November.

They’re less confident that Mr. Biden can hold on to Georgia.

The two Southern battlegrounds are creating a tricky strategic calculus for Mr. Biden’s campaign as it grinds into higher gear and decides where to direct its money, advertising and foot soldiers on the political map. The subtle, early tension is leading to no small amount of jealousy among Democratic allies of Mr. Biden in each state as they jockey for cash and attention.

“I would certainly advocate for North Carolina over Georgia right now with the Biden campaign,” Roy Cooper, the Tar Heel State’s governor, said in a recent interview, pointing out that Mr. Biden’s defeat there by just a percentage point in 2020 was his closest in the nation. “Obviously, I’m a little biased. They’re going to have to make those decisions. I think Georgia is still an extremely important state to the president and can help put him over the top.”

North Carolina looks like a more appealing target this year, even though a Democratic presidential candidate has not won the state since 2008. But Republicans recently nominated a candidate for governor with a well-documented history of antisemitic comments, staunch opposition to abortion and anti-L.G.B.T.Q. views, and Democrats hope he will drag down the Republican ticket to Mr. Biden’s advantage.

Georgia now appears a little less enticing, despite a narrow Biden victory there in 2020 that gave Democrats new ambitions of winning in the South. That year, Mr. Biden ran alongside two Democratic candidates for Senate with control of the chamber at stake, prompting both die-hard Democrats and infrequent voters to surge to the polls. This year, there is no marquee down-ballot race to help Mr. Biden, and liberal organizers in the state have warned of money problems and lagging grass-roots energy .

Both Sun Belt states are growing more racially diverse, a demographic shift that favors Democrats. But the rising Democratic belief in North Carolina, and pessimism in Georgia, show how the party is especially reliant this year on down-ballot races to increase turnout as Mr. Biden fights anemic approval ratings. It is possible he loses both states, with polls showing Mr. Trump ahead in each.

Mr. Biden’s campaign and its allies have poured more money in Georgia, spending nearly $24 million on television advertising there compared with over $5.6 million in North Carolina. But the campaign’s staffing is more robust in North Carolina, where it announced the hiring of three full-time employees in January, including a campaign manager and senior adviser positions. In Georgia, the campaign has so far hired just one staff member, a senior adviser, with the election less than eight months away.

“It’s frustrating as a Georgian because we put so much into Georgia,” said Erick Allen, the former chair of the Cobb County Democratic Party, who is now running for a county commission seat. “But I understand, because if you think about the 2020 election, the momentum that Biden was able to tap into here was also because of the energy in the statewide races,” he said, referring to Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff’s campaigns for Senate.

Mr. Allen added: “You need that extra energy statewide in order to really make a play. And Georgia doesn’t have that this cycle.”

Mr. Biden’s campaign has not written off Georgia and maintains that it remains a top priority. The president visited the state for a rally in Atlanta on Saturday, one week after Jill Biden, the first lady, hosted an event there. Vice President Kamala Harris has visited the state twice this year and 11 times since being elected. A slew of surrogates, including Doug Emhoff, Ms. Harris’s husband, and Gov. Wes Moore of Maryland have traversed Georgia in recent weeks.

“The president is in the right place,” Mr. Warnock told Democrats in Atlanta before Mr. Biden’s speech on Saturday. “Because we know that the road to the White House goes through Georgia.”

Several top campaign aides, including Quentin Fulks, Mr. Biden’s principal deputy campaign manager, and Michael Tyler, his communications director, are also Georgia natives. Mr. Fulks said in an interview that both North Carolina and Georgia, each of which offers 16 electoral votes, were “at the top of the list” of priority.

“President Biden was the top of the ticket in 2020, and he’s going to be at the top of the ticket again in 2024 regardless of what state you’re looking at,” he said, adding that the campaign would have a “more robust presence” in Georgia this month. “I see a pretty bright pathway to Georgia, but our campaign is under no illusions. We have to get in there, we have to do the work, we have to have a presence there.”

But wary Georgia Democrats, pointing to the delay in hiring full-time staff on the ground and lagging voter enthusiasm, say that if Mr. Biden’s campaign does not redouble its efforts, he might not hold a state he carried by fewer than 12,000 votes four years ago.

“The fact is, Georgia is still in play, and of course we want to maintain Georgia,” said Van Johnson, the mayor of Savannah. “But that doesn’t happen by osmosis. It happens by intentional investment.”

He added: “North Carolina is important. There is a governor’s race there — that’s important. But you can’t cut off your right hand and help your left hand. You need both.”

Democrats in both states are often diplomatic about discussing the sensitive intraparty topic. Governor Cooper said that he had urged Mr. Biden to treat North Carolina as a top goal and that it ranked “very high” on the list of battleground states the campaign believes it can win.

And while he was careful to mention that Georgia was also important, he noted that Mr. Biden would not have the benefit of running alongside a strong Senate candidate in the state.

“You don’t have Raphael Warnock on the ballot in 2024,” he said.

Before Barack Obama won North Carolina in 2008, Democrats had fallen short in the state in every presidential cycle since 1976. They have found much more success at the state level, winning the governor’s race in seven of the last eight campaign cycles. The last two Senate elections in the state, in 2022 and 2020 , have been close, with the Republican candidate winning by under four points each time.

Prominent Democratic groups are planning to target North Carolina, particularly because of the involvement of Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, the Republican nominee for governor. His inflammatory comments and politically toxic positions stand out even in a party that has put forward many flawed nominees for top offices in recent years.

Among other things, Mr. Robinson has quoted Hitler on Facebook, flirted with Holocaust denial and referred to “transgenderism” and “homosexuality” as “filth.” He has also expressed support for a six-week abortion ban, a stance Democrats have already seized on.

Pat Dennis, the president of American Bridge 21st Century, a liberal group that digs into the histories of Republican candidates, said Mr. Robinson was a “dream” for opposition researchers, adding that candidates like him who hold right-wing views on abortion “really help define the race in the suburbs, which I think is where North Carolina will be won or lost.”

Mr. Robinson’s campaign brushed off Democrats’ plans to highlight his offensive past statements, and tried to link Josh Stein, the Democratic nominee for governor and the state’s attorney general, to Mr. Biden.

“Joe Biden, Josh Stein and the Democrats are so desperate to distract the voters from their massive failures like unchecked illegal immigration, crippling inflation, and more that they’re relentlessly churning out lies to smear Mark Robinson instead of talking about the real issues of this campaign,” Mike Lonergan, Mr. Robinson’s communications director, said in a statement.

Demographic trends also explain why Mr. Biden would expand his political map to North Carolina, the nation’s ninth most populous state.

North Carolina’s population growth continues to outpace that of the rest of the country, and much of it has been led by people of color. That boom has been even more pronounced in cities: The Charlotte and Raleigh areas were among the top 10 metro areas nationally for population growth, according to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . Many of the new residents are from blue states like New York and California.

Marc Farinella, the North Carolina state director for Mr. Obama’s 2008 campaign, said that Mr. Biden had a “plausible” case for victory in both Southern states at this point in the race.

During Mr. Obama’s first campaign, when Georgia was more reliably red, senior advisers who did not see a path forward there redeployed resources to North Carolina and other states that seemed more winnable just weeks before the election.

“You take an expansive view and as you get closer to Election Day, your view narrows,” Mr. Farinella said.

Biden and Trump clinch nominations, sealing presidential rematch in 2024 election

President and ex-president capture nearly all votes in Georgia, Mississippi, Washington and Hawaii

Both Joe Biden and Donald Trump won primary elections in Georgia, Mississippi and Washington state on Tuesday, solidifying a rematch a majority of voters aren’t looking forward to.

Both men captured nearly all the votes cast so far in what had become token state primaries, along with the primary for Democrats abroad and the Republican caucus in Hawaii. Biden also won the Northern Mariana Islands primary on Tuesday morning, earning 11 delegates.

In Georgia, a nascent effort to register opposition to the Biden administration’s support for the war in Gaza could not be easily expressed with “no preference” protest votes in that state, because the ballot does not provide a way to do so. One woman in Roswell, Georgia, described voting for Representative Dean Phillips, who dropped out of the Democratic contest last week, as a substitute.

“I voted a protest vote against the war in Gaza because I think it is horrible what is happening and I’m ashamed of my country right now,” said Robin Hawking, 56, a software developer. She said she is normally a Republican voter. “I’m hoping if enough people vote for not-Biden, he’ll get the message that he’s going to lose this election unless he does a ceasefire.”

Uchenna Nwosu, a gynecologist, said her decision was a no-brainer.

“It’s clear that I couldn’t vote for somebody who repealed women’s rights for abortion, for instance, for healthcare,” she said. “I don’t know why Trump should be in the race. I mean, that alone is a good reason. He doesn’t stand for anything that I stand for. So that’s it.”

Trump ran unopposed in Georgia, though other names still appeared on the ballot, attracting a few voters.

Scott Carpenter of Roswell voted for former ambassador Nikki Haley because he hated Trump, he said. He voted for Biden in 2020. “I don’t like Trump. I don’t like Biden. I just wanted a different choice,” he said.

Travis Foreman, 46, an attorney in Alpharetta, said he thought Trump was good for America and expressed frustration with the Democratic party.

“I don’t agree with the party and some of their core beliefs,” Foreman said, adding that he’s voted Democratic and independent during his life. “And it’s hard for me as a preacher’s kid from south Georgia to just agree with some of their core fundamental beliefs that they want me to. A whole gender ideology, movement – I just have a problem with it. I don’t mind what anyone chooses to do with their lives and how they live their lives, but don’t try to force me to accept certain things against my own principles. It just came to me that’s the No 1 issue.”

Biden won enough delegates in Georgia almost immediately to win the Democratic nomination, which requires 1,968 on the first ballot to win.

Trump was also on track to secure the required 1,215 delegates needed for the Republican nomination.

Trump and Biden clinch 2024 presidential nominations

The general election rematch between former President Donald Trump and President Biden is now official.

Both men have now secured the required delegates to be their respective party's nominee.

Biden and Trump won nearly every contest in the presidential nominating calendar so far but the important threshold of winning a majority of delegates to the party conventions this summer has finally been met. Tuesday's contests included primaries in Georgia , a key swing state for both parties, as well as Washington state and Mississippi .

Trump has been a de facto incumbent throughout the process, holding off several challengers though ceding a meaningful share of votes to former S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley.

Biden did not face serious opposition in the primaries, but opposition to his policies around Israel and Gaza has led to some delegates going to "uncommitted."

In Biden's response to securing the nomination earlier tonight he took a swipe at his expected challenger, front-runner Trump.

"Despite the challenges we faced when I took office, we're in the middle of a comeback: wages are rising faster than inflation, jobs are coming back, consumer confidence has soared," Biden said. "Amid this progress, we face a sobering reality: Freedom and democracy are at risk here at home in a way they have not been since the Civil War. Donald Trump is running a campaign of resentment, revenge, and retribution that threatens the very idea of America."

Similarly, Trump lashed out at Biden.

"It is my great honor to be representing the Republican Party as its Presidential Nominee. Our Party is UNITED and STRONG, and fully understands that we are running against the Worst, Most Incompetent, Corrupt, and Destructive President in the History of the United States." Trump said, citing border security, high interest rates and inflation — and without proof, that the U.S. was "a Third World Nation, which uses the Injustice System to go after his political opponent, ME!"

How it played out

Georgia's polls closed at 7 p.m. ET, Mississippi's closed at 8 p.m. ET, with Washington closed at 11 p.m. ET and the Hawaii GOP caucus concluding at 2 a.m. ET. Wednesday. Biden secured the nomination not long after winning the primary in Georgia.

Heading into Tuesday, Biden had an estimated 1,866 delegates out of the 1,968 needed to clinch the Democratic nomination. There were 254 delegates at stake in the March 12 Democratic contests, and Biden won all six of the delegates from the Northern Mariana Islands Tuesday morning.

For Trump, he needed 137 delegates heading into Tuesday. There were 161 up for grabs in the March 12 Republican contests. Trump secured the nomination just after Washington state's polls closed — not long after winning Mississippi as well as Georgia, a state where he faces criminal charges for a failed attempt to overturn the 2020 election and other obstacles to winning in November.

This is the third presidential cycle in a row where Trump will be the GOP nominee. And as he secures the nomination on March 12, he becomes the second earliest Republican and third earliest candidate overall — in the modern era — to clinch his party's spot at the top of the ticket.

Joe Biden clinches easy Democratic primary wins in Georgia, Mississippi

President Joe Biden clinched the Democratic presidential nomination in the 2024 election on Tuesday night after winning primary races in Georgia, Mississippi, Washington and the Northern Mariana Islands. He will not officially become the nominee until the Democratic National Convention delegates vote this summer.

The incumbent president won his second nomination, surpassing the 1,968 delegates required to secure his spot as the presumptive Democratic candidate.

The Democratic Party has 4,672 delegates in total, and the presidential nominee must win the majority of delegates at the DNC in Chicago in August to officially accept the nomination.

The GOP frontrunner, Donald Trump, is expected to secure the nomination following Tuesday evening’s results of the Hawaii caucus.

“We are facing a sobering reality,” Biden said in a statement Tuesday after winning the nomination. “Freedom and democracy are at risk here at home in a way they have not been since the Civil War. Donald Trump is running a campaign of resentment, revenge, and retribution that threatens the very idea of America.”

“I believe that the American people will choose to keep us moving into the future,” he added.

Biden will not be officially the Democratic nominee until the DNC delegation votes this summer.

DNC chair urges support for Biden-Harris ticket

DNC Chair Minyon Moore celebrated the win and encouraged Democrats to support the Biden-Harris ticket.

“As we face another battle for the soul of our nation, we encourage every American to tune in to the Democratic National Convention this summer to celebrate the Biden-Harris ticket and rally around Democrats’ vision of a free and fair America,” Moore wrote in a statement.

Biden win comes after release of Robert Hur interview transcript

Biden’s victory comes after the House Judiciary Committee released the full transcript of his two-day interview with special counsel Robert Hur last October regarding his handling of classified documents.

Transcripts showed that the president told Hur that he didn’t purposely keep the classified information after his tenure as vice president ended. In a report released last month, the special counsel said Biden shouldn’t face criminal charges for mishandling documents and described him as a “sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”

Biden and Trump clinch 2024 presidential nominations, teeing up general election rematch

President Biden and former President Donald Trump are barreling toward a November election rematch after their primary wins Tuesday night.

CBS News estimates that Trump will be the presumptive 2024 Republican nominee after his win in Washington, amassing the 1,125 delegates needed to clinch the GOP nomination. He also won the day's Georgia and Mississippi primaries, CBS News projected.

In a video posted to social media by the Trump campaign, Trump called it a "great day of victory," but said "we're not going to take time to celebrate. We'll celebrate in eight months when the election is over."

Mr. Biden clinched the Democratic Party's nomination earlier Tuesday. He picked up wins in Washington, Georgia and Mississippi, CBS News projected. 

With these wins, and the nominations settled, this will now be one of the longest general election campaigns in modern history. There are 238 days until Nov. 5, the day of the presidential election.

Trump's path to the nomination  

It's been an unconventional path to the nomination for Trump, who is the first former president in history to be indicted on criminal charges. 

Trump held a commanding lead in the polls over every primary challenger since launching his reelection campaign in November 2022. And those polls weren't even close: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis managed to come within a 15-point difference of Trump in a Fox News poll released in February 2023, long before DeSantis actually jumped into the race. 

Then Trump was indicted in four separate criminal proceedings — facing a total of 91 felony charges. With each indictment, Trump saw a boost in his primary poll numbers and was able to raise millions off of perceived efforts to unfairly target the former president. 

With a larger war chest of cash and assertive lead in the polls, Trump was emboldened to ignore his primary rivals, declaring the primary over before it effectively started. He refused to participate in any of the debates sanctioned by the Republican National Committee or to sign a pledge to support the party's eventual nominee.

Trump also rarely appeared on the campaign trail. The former president campaigned in Iowa only 26 times this cycle, compared to Gov. DeSantis who visited all 99 counties in the Hawkeye State. 

Ultimately, Trump won the Iowa caucus by the largest margin of any Republican ever, crushing his rivals by winning 51% of Iowa caucus-goers.

The former president steamrolled through the early nominating contests, winning all but two of the primaries in his path. Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, the last Republican to square off against Trump before dropping out the day after Super Tuesday , only won two GOP primaries, in Vermont and Washington, D.C. 

Now, Trump officially turns his focus to Mr. Biden, who defeated Trump in 2020 by flipping key battleground states Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Georgia and Arizona. 

Polling currently shows Trump leading Mr. Biden in a head-to-head matchup. A CBS News poll released earlier in March shows Trump with his largest lead yet, besting Mr. Biden 52% to 48% among likely voters.

Biden's reelection campaign is underway

Clinching the Democratic nomination was more of a formality for Mr. Biden. 

The incumbent president faced two longshot challengers in Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota and author Marianne Williamson, but has overwhelmingly won every Democratic primary and caucus thus far (except for in American Samoa, where he split delegates with venture capitalist Jason Palmer , although Palmer won more of the 91 votes cast). 

A movement to vote "uncommitted" on some state ballots to protest Mr. Biden's response to the Israel-Hamas war has been the second top vote-getter in some states (Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Hawaii), though with a wide gap between the president and this option. 

Mr. Biden's path to 1,968 delegates also began with an adjusted calendar he pushed for in 2022 – with South Carolina taking the first slot followed by Nevada and Michigan.

With its "first in the nation" law , New Hampshire was technically the first state to hold a Democratic nominating contest. While the president's name was not on the ballot and no delegates were awarded, due to the state breaking the DNC's new rules, Mr. Biden won anyway with a write-in vote.

Following his State of the Union address last Thursday, the president and his campaign have  shifted into full general election mode .

He has ramped up his battleground state travel, with trips to Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin and Michigan slated so far this month. Vice President Kamala Harris was in Arizona and Nevada over the weekend.

The campaign announced a $30 million ad buy over the next six weeks, with the first ad looking to tackle concerns about the president's age, 81. The campaign has a goal of opening 100 new offices across the battleground states and adding 350 new staffers this month.

Underscoring the campaign's pivot to the general election mode is a severe cash advantage for Mr. Biden, with over $130 million cash on hand according to campaign finance records in combination with the DNC, nearly doubling Mr. Trump's war chest.

But the incumbent president is still stuck in a tight battle with his 2020 opponent according to national and battleground state polling — in part due to waning enthusiasm from his winning Democratic coalition in 2020.

Mr. Biden has already started putting his contrasts with Trump front and center in his campaign. He referred frequently to "my predecessor" in his State of the Union address and has continued his criticism of Trump on the campaign trail.

"Donald Trump has a different constituency. Here's the guy who's kicking off his general election campaign in the road up with Marjorie Taylor Greene. It can tell you a lot about a person who he keeps company with," Mr. Biden said during a campaign event in Atlanta on Saturday.
