If you are looking for a nature holiday, I would most defiantely recommend Borneo. Saw all the wildlife I had hoped for and more. Our CEO with G Adventures, Ricky, was fantastic. Helpful, kind, knowledgable and very calm. Always happy to help and answer any questions regarding the wildlife or history of Borneo. The group was also fantastic, full of laid back, like minded, wildlife lovers, from all over the world. Thank you!!

The 10 day Classic Borneo trip was everything I had hoped for. Our tour leader Stephanie Kam was superb and I saw Orangutans, proboscis monkeys, macaques, silver leaf langurs, pygmy elephants, crocodiles, and snakes. Very happy and would definitely recommend.

The tour was fantabulous! Great sights, great food, excellent tour guides are ingredients for an unforgettable experience. Close encounters with wildlife in the primeval forest of Borneo as well as the mangrove forest in Langkawi are second to none; the boat rides with the help of local guides make for a thrilling adventure. Complementing the awesome nature discovery is the cultural immersion in the distinct cities of Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, Georgetown and Langkawi. A candid preview of Malaysia at its awesome best in two weeks! It is hands-down one of the best uses of one's time, energy, money.
Wow...what an adventure! What was the most inspirational moment of your trip? On the river canoe trip, watching the elephants crossing the river and struggling to get up the muddy bank on the far side. This was a rare event and we watched for ages as the baby struggled up the  bank with the help of the adult herd. Truly amazing! Spending the night in the jungle camp was an experience. No electricity, and only a roof and a mossie net to protect us from the thunder storm is something I'll never forget.  The boat trip back from the island in rough seas, I was dreading, but absolutely loved it...thrilling!! What did you think of your group leader? She was excellent. Very patient and understanding of our needs. She was ready to spring into action at any point and did so with a smile on her face the whole time! Do you have any advice for potential travellers? This is an adventurous holiday and can be quite challenging at times.you need to be prepared for basic accommodation, which is described in the brochure and web site as such, but "showers" were often a barrel of rainwater and a scoop, and toileting was somewhat of an adventure..especially when you find a frog in the toilet! It really makes you appreciate the comforts of life, though, like toilet paper and hot running water! There are a lot of "beasties", most of which love to bite or sting so take some antihistemines just in case! I'd advise breaking up the jouney there with a stopover as the time difference can be difficult. We had a great time in out homestay, the house was clean and comfortable and we played with the children for hours ( learn some good hand clapping games!), so not speaking the language wasnt a problem.  Other families were not so lucky though, so our group had a mixed response to this aspect of the trip. You just need to go with the flow on this part.   We booked the trip so that we could visit Sepilok, but I was disappointed that there were so few orangutans to see and they were quite far away...its so much better to see them in the wild! Is there anything else you would like to add? If you are looking for something out of the ordinary, then Borneo is for you. I am so pleased we had this adventure, it challenged me several times, but looking back on it now I realise how lucky I am to have been there to experience it.

We were really looking forward to this trip , and it didn’t disappoint. From start to finish we had the best time . The orangutans were amazing as well as everything else we saw . Our guide Sevi was so knowledgeable, we enjoyed talking with him. Our guide on the river tour was Leo and again, a lovely guy, friendly and knowledgeable too. Overall we are pleased we did the trips .. Deb and Brett
Way, way, way overpriced. This was not a tour, but just a series of hotel reservations and transfers. You could easily set this up on your own with 2 hours of research and 1/4 of the money. Don’t use this company. I booked another trip through tour radar with Intrepid and it was worth the price. If I could give it zero stars. I would. Don’t do it!

Sepilok seeing orangutan’s up close and we were also lucky enough to see them on trips from Bilit and Tabinin the wild. We also saw proboscis monkeys, macaques and a gibbon in the wild as well as a range of birds and other mammals. The Sun Bear rescue centre was a good addition. The palm oil production was also very interesting given it is a useful product if done right and the need for balance with nature. It was great to finish at Tabin with
Seeing the orangutans, flying squirrels & Rhinoceros & Helmeted Hornbill birds!

Sabah is a tropical state of Malaysia in the Borneo area with Kota Kinabalu as it’s capital. This state is an island with a mix of beaches, waterfronts and mountains and Mount Kinabalu as it’s the highest peak. It is covered with rain forests and is green through most part of the year.

How to reach Sabah:

Flight options for Sabah:

The major flight carriers from Delhi are Air Asia, Malindo Air, and Malaysian Airlines. While Air Asia is usually the cheapest option available, Malindo Air and Malaysian Airlines offer luxury at a good price.

Travel Tip: Carry your blanket and water when traveling by Air Asia as everything onboard is chargeable.

Visa and Immigration:

A Malaysian Tourist visa with single entry or multiple entries is valid to travel to Sabah. You may use the following link to apply for Malaysian Tourist Visa (Entri) which usually takes around 4 hours to process and is for 3000INR approximately. There is a very long queue observed at the Kuala Lumpur airport for immigration so it is recommended to plan your connecting flight in such a way that you don’t end up missing it.

Currency in Sabah:

It is recommended to carry cash from India while traveling to Malaysia as the forex rates offered here are better. The waterfront is overlooking the floating mosque which is an architectural marvel and looks beautiful.

Ultimate Guide to Sabah, Borneo: Top Places & Itineraries

Sabah is one of the most diverse places we have ever visited. It is located in Malaysia , on the northern half of the island of Borneo. We were enticed to go to Sabah to see orangutans and proboscis monkeys in their natural habitat. There are very few places in the world to see these creatures in the wild.

Orangutans are on the critically endangered list and can only be seen in the wild in Sumatra and Borneo. Reminding me of the creepy dude at the bar, proboscis monkeys are endemic to Borneo. These unique monkeys are so amazing to see in real life. However, due to palm plantation deforestation, they are losing their homes at alarming rates.

Sabah also has so much more to offer. It is teeming with exotic wildlife, beautiful beaches, an epic mountain hike, and world-class scuba diving. Sabah is perfect as part of a bigger Malaysia trip or for a Borneo wildlife holiday! Whether you plan to come for a family vacation or a backpacking trip, Sabah is a wonderful destination nestled in Southeast Asia.

Check out this guide to Sabah as it covers all the best places to visit to help you plan your trip!

Best Time to Visit Sabah, Borneo

Travel to Sabah: Mount Kinabalu

The best time to visit Sabah is not as cut and dry as most places. There are different rainy seasons for the east and west of Sabah. When one has more rain, the other is drier. Overall though, March through October is the driest part of the year. Most of Sabah is rainforest, so it is possible for rain at any time of the year.

Currency in Sabah, Borneo

The Malaysian Ringgit (RM) is the national currency in Malaysia and Sabah. As of April 2022, the Ringgit is worth:

  • $1 USD = 4.35 RM
  • €1 = 4.60 RM

Religion and Language in Sabah, Borneo

Visit Sabah: Male Monkey

Sabah is not as conservative as West Malaysia, such as the Kuala Lumpur area. The majority of people are Muslim, but there are also small pockets of practicing Christians. Malay is the official language of Malaysia. However, English is widely spoken in Kota Kinabalu and the majority of tourism and hospitality businesses around the island.

As always, a few phrases in the native language are good to learn. We found that just saying “thank you” in Malay brings a very friendly response.

  • Hello – Helo
  • Good morning – Selamat pagi
  • Good evening – Selamat petang
  • How are you? – Apa khabar
  • Thank you – Terima kasih
  • I am – Saya
  • Your welcome – Sama-sama

Food in Sabah, Borneo

There are typically three types of food you can find in Sabah – traditional Malay, Indian/Bangladeshi, and Chinese. Many of the dishes in Sabah are heavily influenced by Chinese cuisine. Most of the population and places to visit are on the coast, so seafood is widely available.

Malay food is not the best for vegetarians. However, roti canai, similar to a flaky naan beard, was our lifesaver and so delicious. We ate it every day, typically for breakfast and snacking. Also make sure to try teh tarik, a frothy delicious tea.

Some common dishes in Malaysia with typical prices:

  • Roti canai – traditional bread with dipping sauces 4 RM – 6 RM
  • Telur mata – sunny side eggs 4 RM – 6 RM
  • Telur dadar – omelette 8 RM – 10 RM
  • Thosai – similar to Indian dosa 12 RM
  • Mee goreng – fried noodles 12 RM – 20 RM
  • Nasi goreng – fried rice 12 RM – 20 RM
  • Teh Tarik – Black tea with condensed milk (frothy) – 4 RM – 6 RM
  • Teh “O” – tea with sugar – 4 RM – 6 RM
  • Kopi – coffee 4 RM – 6 RM

A few useful words on food/drinks in Malay

  • Panas / Sejuk – Hot/Cold for drinks
  • Sayur – vegetables
  • Tidak ayam – no chicken

Accommodation in Sabah, Borneo

Sabah Trip: Female Orangutan

The accommodation is expensive relative to the rest of Southeast Asia. Budget hostels and dorms start from 20 RM to 36 RM ($5 – $8 USD) depending on the area. Basic private double rooms start from 70 RM ($16 USD) per night. A budget room in Sabah also typically means really poor standards. Not all hotels charge it, but legally, hotels and guesthouses are required to charge a tourist tax of 10 RM per night.

One thing we noticed was that prices were ALWAYS higher as a walk-in. We would book ahead, or walk in to check out the room, and if we decided to stay, book the room online. The best prices typically were on  Booking.com .

Transportation in Sabah, Borneo

Sabah, Borneo Travel Itinerary: Mabul Island

Getting to Sabah is best with AirAsia, a budget airline based in Kuala Lumpur. They have cheap flights to Sabah from different airports in Asia. A flight from Kuala Lumpur to Sabah is 120 RM ($30 USD) when booking 4+ weeks in advance.

Bus Transport  in Sabah is available between all major cities. Bus departures typically leave from Kota Kinabalu each hour to destinations, such as Sandakan, Semporna, or Tawau. There are several bus companies with similar fares. At the time of writing, the fares were as follows:

  • Kota Kinabalu to Mount Kinabalu 25 RM
  • Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan 45 RM
  • Sandakan to Semporna 45 RM
  • Semporna to Tawau 20 RM

Motorbikes  are available for rent in Kota Kinabalu for 45 RM/day.

Car hire companies  are located near the airport in Kota Kinabalu. The price for a small car, such as a Viva, is around 100 RM/day, or a larger Toyota SUV for 200 RM/day.

Grab Car  is excellent and available in all cities in Sabah. When traveling with multiple people, it is often the same price or cheaper than the bus. For example, a Grab Car from Kota Kinabalu to Mount Kinabalu for 80 RM, or from Semporna to Tawau for 65 RM.

Top Places to Visit in Sabah, Borneo

1. what to do in kota kinabalu.

Travel to Sabah: Chili's Night Market

The main city in Sabah – Kota Kinabalu – is filled with hotels, restaurants, and lively night markets. The Filipino market and night market, both centrally located by the waterfront, have local produce, meat, fish, and freshly prepared dinners. There are local BBQ restaurants that cook fresh seafood. Make sure to negotiate.

Gaya street has many bars and Chinese and Malay restaurants. Definitely stop by Yee Fung Laksa on Gaya Street for the best Laksa in all of Malaysia. For 19RM, you get a steaming hot bowl of the good stuff. Trust us on this one! It is worth a stop outside of town to the Kota Kinabalu City Mosque. The reflection of the mosque on the moat is a really awesome photo opportunity.

Visit Sabah: Filipino Night Market

High-End Stay:   Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Resort  is located near the city and with a private beach. Rooms start at 800 RM ($190).

2. The Best Beaches in Sabah at the Tip of Borneo

Sabah, Borneo Travel Itinerary: Tip of Borneo

The Tip of Borneo is a picturesque spot on the northernmost point of Borneo. The rocky shoreline is a perfect backdrop for sunset. Some of the best beaches on mainland Borneo are located just south of the tip. The large Kalampunian Beach has several beach cottages and a few restaurants, although a bit rundown. We preferred a smaller more private beach and tent camping at the Secret Place.

Travel to Sabah: Kudat Beaches

High-End Stay:   Kudat Riviera Beach Villas  is located at private beaches with three stunning villas to choose from starting at 1380 RM ($330).

3. Hiking Mount Kinabalu

Sabah Trip: Mount Kinabalu

Mount Kinabalu is the tallest mountain in Malaysia and one of the highest in Southeast Asia. The hike is expensive at $350 – $400 per person and with limited permits. However, the views from the summit are some of the best of any mountain in SE Asia. Mount Kinabalu is a strenuous hike ascending over 2,200 meters (7,300 feet) and was one of our highlights in Sabah.

Check out our full post on  hiking Mount Kinabalu  for more information.

Sabah, Borneo Travel Itinerary: Mount Kinabalu Summit

High-End Stay:   Sutera Sanctuary Lodges Kinabalu Park  is located in the national park with rooms starting at 200 RM ($50 USD).

4. Borneo Wildlife in Sepilok & Sandakan

Visit Sabah: Pregnant Orangutan

Sandakan is the gateway to visiting several attractions in the area. We found the waterfront to be quite dirty and pretty smelly. Sepilok is popular for animal sanctuaries to visit. The well-known Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center should not be missed.

The orangutan nursery is just too cute and the twice-daily feeding is a great way to get up and close to adult orangutans. The feedings are at 10 AM and 3 PM, the latter of which is less crowded. Located next door is the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Center. Sun Bears are the smallest bears in the world and are threatened by deforestation and illegal hunting. This center is home to 42 sun bears and is open between 10 AM and 3 PM.

There is a proboscis monkey sanctuary in Labuk Bay. However, we do not recommend visiting this attraction. The owner of this “sanctuary” owns the palm plantation surrounding the park, which displaced the monkeys in the first place. Proboscis monkeys can easily be seen in the wild elsewhere in Sabah (see  Kinabatangan River ). From Sandakan, it is possible to visit Turtle Island to see nesting turtles in June.

Sabah Trip: Playful Orangutan

Entrance Costs:  The entry to the Orangutan and Sun Bear conservation are both 30 RM.

High-End Stay:   Sepilok Forest Edge Resort  is located next to the sanctuaries and has chalets starting from 290 RM ($70 USD).

5. Borneo Rainforest Tours at the Kinabatangan River

Travel to Sabah: Female Monkey

Borneo is known for its superb wildlife. The Kinabatangan River is one of the best places in Borneo to see wildlife due to its easy accessibility. Here you can easily see proboscis monkeys, orangutans, pygmy elephants, crocodiles, snakes, exotic birds, and many more in just a couple of days.

Most homestays and resorts are located near Sukau, a village upriver next to palm plantations. There are a few resorts located downriver that are more remote. While staying on the Kinabatangan, resorts usually have an all-inclusive package rate that includes meals, river cruises, and jungle walks. There are a few budget backpackers and homestays on the Kinabatangan, and there are several high-end resorts, leaving few options in between.

Visit Sabah: Grey Monkey

Mid-Range Stay :  Borneo Natural Sukau Bilit Resort  has all-inclusive packages for two people at one of their cottages for 1,060 RM ($250 USD/room).

6. Stunning Beaches and Views at Bohey Dulang

Sabah, Borneo Travel Itinerary: Bohey Dulang

An amazing day trip to the beautiful Bohey Dulang island is definitely worth it. The views are incredible and the beaches are some of the best in Sabah. You can arrange a trip from the port town of Semporna, which is the gateway to Bohey Dulang and Sipadan.

However, if it weren’t for these two things, there is absolutely no reason for anyone to ever visit Semporna. It is a filthy city with no redeeming qualities. Streets are littered with trash and an absurd amount of pollution/plastics in the water. I would avoid the cheapest backpackers here, they are truly horrible. Semporna is the necessary evil to get to some amazing places, so get in and out as fast as possible!

Travel to Sabah: Bohey Dulang

Mid-Range Stay :  The Village  is a new and modern hotel with private rooms for 180 RM ($40 USD).

7. Scuba Diving at Sipadan

Visit Sabah: Scuba Diving

Sipadan is one of the best dive sites in the world. Doesn’t it seem like you hear that in so many countries? With over 150 combined dives in some incredible places, we can attest to it being one of our favorites! With stringent laws for the protection of the marine environment, there are now only 120 daily permits for diving at Sipadan.

Sipadan is known for its incredible marine diversity. The island is an inactive volcano, with a sloping wall that has a drop-off of 600 meters (2,000 feet) to the seabed. It is home to green and hawksbill turtles, massive schools of barracuda and big-eye trevally, manta rays, reef sharks (white tip/blacktip/grey), as well as an occasional spotting of whale sharks and hammerhead sharks.

Several websites state it is cheaper to stay in Semporna, and maybe it is, but we recommend staying on Mabul Island. Mabul Island has diving as well, which is subpar relative to Sipadan, but it’s inexpensive and has tons of massive turtles.

Sabah Trip: Scuba Diving

Mid-Range Stay :  Billabong Scuba  has overwater chalets for 150 RM per person including all meals (price for divers) ($35 USD).

While on a recent trip to Sabah , Malaysia, as part of a Fam Trip along with the other travel bloggers of Travel.Earth, we were given the opportunity to take part in a variety of activities. We went rafting, zip lining, cruising and many more.  While at our stay at the luxurious and absolutely stunning Shangri-La Rasa Ria , we were told that they were going to make sure we took part in as many of their activities during our short stay there as possible, from what I had read, they had many to choose from and I couldn’t wait to see what they had in store for us.  We started off the day with sailing followed by the more aerial kind- parasailing. We then rushed to go kayaking, which left us exhausted but we were told that we still had one activity left to go- The Nature Walk. We all looked at each other apprehensively. How were we going to make it through this??? I for one was sore all over and was not looking forward to another physically challenging activity. That being said, we didn’t want to offend our absolutely wonderful hosts and agreed to go ahead with the Walk. We were asked to meet at the starting point to meet our guide, Leroy. Leroy gave us a basic safety briefing and told us that we were about to take the easiest trek which would take around 50 minutes and that halfway through the trek, we would stop at an observation deck for a breather and return back to the starting point. In all honesty, the only words I heard were ’50 minute trek’ and nothing else, all I wanted to do was lounge in the pool and then soak in our balcony hot tub with the sun in my face. I’ll admit, I was not a very happy camper when we the trek, fortunately, things got better.

green sabah travel

We began our trek with a few tired steps and as we kept going, we slowly realized why we were told that we would regret skipping this particular activity. As we breathed in the fresh, clean air, the effect was almost instant. We started becoming more and more energetic and actually started enjoying ourselves. A few minutes into our trek, we came across a couple of hanging bridges that were enveloped by the surrounding trees with the sun seeping through the canopies. We each took a few minutes to pose and take some pictures as we had such a stunning backdrop. The view was absolutely breathtaking. After clicking our pictures and refueling ourselves with some much-needed H2O, we carried on our journey to the observation deck.

green sabah travel

Throughout our entire walk, our guide Leroy was very informative and kept us motivated. We discovered his flair for accents due to his unique job which we tested and were especially impressed with his British and American accent. He had also told us that he had quite a few Indian friends which we were thrilled to hear. We enjoyed his company and pressed him for more stories about his job and the experiences that came with it and he obliged.

green sabah travel

As we got on with our trek, the route started becoming more and more challenging. The stone pathways became mud pathways and our steps became more and more calculated in order to avoid falling over. Le Roy promised us that the halfway point was near. As we struggled forward, we could see in the distance, an elevated wooden observation deck with two levels. I quickened my pace and made my way to the top of the deck and as I looked around, I let out an audible gasp. The view around us was a culmination of all the beauty we had witnessed on all our previous days in Sabah . It was a panoramic view that consisted of the forest, the river, the private beach, all framed by the majestic mountain ranges. We tried in vain to capture all the beauty on our phone cameras and finally gave up and decided to enjoy it with our built-in cameras- our eyes- and took as many mental pictures as we could.  We all sat in silence for a couple of minutes just taking it all in before we were told that we needed to head back before sunset. As I grudgingly headed back to down and continued our journey back to the hotel, our realized that out of all our activities, the Nature Walk most represented my trip to Sabah . Unassuming, rejuvenating, breathtaking and awe-inspiring, I was already planning my next trip back!

Israel opens crossing into Gaza amid global pressure

Global air cargo demand up 11.9% in february, fed blocks tough global climate rules for us banks.

Lankayan Island is located within the Sugud Islands Marine Conservation Area, or SIMCA.

Imagine being on a small island resort that’s surrounded by crystal clear waters and white sandy beaches. In the morning, when you head to the mess hall for breakfast, you are greeted by lots of fishes and other sea creatures swimming right underneath the planks that you walk on.

Every so often you can even spot a baby shark or two ... doo doo doo.

When noon comes, it is the turtles’ turn to make an appearance (specifically the Hawksbill and Green sea turtles). Add to that some seabirds stopping by the buoys for the humans to take pictures of with their trusty phone cameras.

Frankly, that’s the only thing your phone is good for at this place – there is hardly any mobile network coverage here so you’re “forced” to stay off your devices and enjoy your surroundings instead.

Lankayan Island in Sabah may not be as popular as some of the other islands in the state, but it is by no means an inferior one. It is located in the northeast and is part of the Coral Triangle region, where, among others, 600 species of reef-building corals, over 2,000 species of reef fish, 25 species of seagrass and algae, seven species of giant clams and six of the seven marine turtle species have been found and recorded.

The Coral Triangle is in the western Pacific Ocean and includes the waters of Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste and the Solomon Islands.

Lankayan – about 80km from Sandakan – is also situated within the Sugud Islands Marine Conservation Area or SIMCA, which covers 46,317ha of the Sulu Sea. There are two other islands under SIMCA: Billean and Tegaipil.

What’s special about SIMCA, apart from being the first privately-managed marine protected area in Malaysia, is that this is a “no-take” zone, meaning no fishing, or removal of any coral and other marine life, is allowed in the vicinity. Failure to comply will result in hefty fines or even imprisonment, or both.

On May 19, SIMCA was officially recognised as a well-managed protected area and was named an International Union Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Green List site. This is the first global recognition of its kinds in Malaysia as well as the first in the Coral Triangle.

This recognition is the result of the long-term commitment of a small team of dedicated folks who work for a private, non-profit company called the Reef Guardian, as well as the local government, stakeholders and local communities.

Dr Chung (standing, fourth from left) and her Reef Guardian team members are responsible for managing SIMCA. — Photos: Reef Guardian

Reef Guardian, which has been in Lankayan for nearly 20 years now, was appointed by the Sabah government in 2003 to be, well, the guardians of the area. A large part of what the organisation does is to manage, restrict and control human activities within SIMCA to ensure a balanced co-existence of ecotourism amid coral habitat/marine life.

It’s a unique collaboration and agreement between the government and two private entities. The state or federal government do not directly fund the conservation work at SIMCA, though, but Reef Guardian does work hand-in-hand with the Sabah Wildlife Department to make sure things run smoothly and there is constant enforcement of regulations.

“The island belongs to the government, and they leased it to the Reef Guardian for 30 years. We then rented the island to the resort – this is pretty much how we have been able to sustain most of the conservation work,” explains Dr Achier Chung, the lead marine biologist for Reef Guardian who also manages and oversees all the work done by the team. The lease is at RM60,000 a year, and there is an option to extend it for 10 years.

According to Dr Chung, tourists who stay at the resort would have to pay a conservation fee of merely RM25 per person, per night, which is collected by Reef Guardian. “The money from this is definitely not enough to fund everything as our operational costs can run pretty high at times. However, we do not have to pay for our accommodation or utility bills as these are all undertaken by the resort. Our food is also subsidised by them.

“But even though we get enough support in kind from the resort, we still need to do some fundraising programmes ourselves throughout the year to ensure that we can continue to do conservation work at SIMCA,” Dr Chung notes.

One of the fundraising programmes done this year was the Adopt-A-Reef Campaign, which saw the participation of BALL Watch Malaysia. As part of its CSR efforts, the watchmaker adopted “Reef 38” in November, located about 4km from Lankayan. The medium-sized reef was discovered by Dr Chung herself, back in 2006.

“It is one of the most beautiful reefs out here and is great for divers,” she says.

The adoption, of course, comes at a price, and this money will be channelled to fund some of the work done by the Reef Guardian, including research and training. As part of the package, Reef 38 has been named “BALL Watch Malaysia”, at least for one year.

Evelyn Wang, general manager of BALL Watch Malaysia says, “Through its efforts in documenting the positive outcomes of biodiversity protection and a well-managed and well-governed protected marine area, Reef Guardian proves that ocean conservation is a necessary investment of resources.

“Together with the commitment of local governments and organisations, BALL Watch is proud to play its part in ensuring the reefs within SIMCA are well protected.”

This is where organisations like Reef Guardian come in. For two decades now, the reefs in SIMCA have been protected from illegal activities like fish bombing, a commercial fishing practice that destroys coral reefs and negatively impacts food security for the local population.

Dr Chung and her team (which includes senior marine biologist Davies Austin Spiji and environmental control officer Leony Sikim) carry out regular checks to monitor coral reef health and record reef fishes as well as coral diversity. Almost all the team members are enforcement officers or “Wildlife Wardens”, accredited by the Wildlife Department. This means that they can reprimand anyone who breaks the rules in SIMCA.

Reef Guardian also does educational programmes on-site, teaching tourists at the resort not just about what the team does, but also how everyone can play a part in ensuring our oceans remain amazing for many generations to come.

“The IUCN Green List recognition was a milestone for us and shows that all our efforts have come to fruition over the years,” says Dr Chung. This recognition is not permanent, though; in five years, Reef Guardian must again prove to IUCN that it has either kept to its conservation efforts or increased and improved its work in the area to remain on the Green List. If the organisation fails to do this, then it may be taken off the list.

“We are currently drafting a 10-year management chart, which is split into two five-year projects or plans. All marine parks must have a long-term management plan. For us, we will evaluate ourselves every two years to see whether we are moving on the right track, or whether we need to change our direction,” she says.

For more information on Reef Guardian, check out their website ( reefguardian.com.my ). You can make a donation to the organisation, or ask about their fundraising campaigns. There is also an Adopt-A-Nest campaign, where you adopt a nest of turtle eggs that are kept in the hatchery on the island.

Lankayan is a popular spot for turtles to lay their eggs, and if you happen to be there during nesting season, you may just witness a turtle laying eggs on the beach. These eggs are then kept in the hatchery.

Once they are hatched, the “babies” are immediately set free into the ocean, ready to face the world.

Putting in the effort

The Engineer Master II Diver Chronometer Reefs special edition with the shark and reef image on the watch's face.

The company also recently launched its special edition Engineer Master II Diver Chronometer Reefs watch, which inspires one to care for the ocean's health. This special edition timepiece features two significant marine symbols: the Shark and the Reef. These symbols represent important components of a healthy marine ecosystem.

Coral reefs are a complex structure that provides habitats to diverse marine species. Healthy reefs provide fisheries and recreational activities such as ecotourism. Meanwhile, sharks are the apex predator in the sea that is vital to maintain the ocean's food chain and the marine ecosystem balance. There are over 500 shark species worldwide, and many face threats of extinction due to overfishing, accidental catching and finning.

Only 143 units of the Engineer Master II Diver Chronometer Reefs were produced available. The number represents the 143 species of shark in the world that are listed as endangered and threatened.

Sights of Elektrostal: the history of the city, what to see, photos and reviews

2024 Author : Harold Hamphrey | [email protected] . Last modified: 2023-12-17 10:06

Elektrostal is a fairly large industrial city, which is located near the Vokhonka River and almost 40-50 km from the eastern part of Moscow. There are a lot of powerful factories here, where many residents of Elektrostal work. They are perfectly combined with the most beautiful green boulevards, streets and parks, bright lawns and flower beds that adorn almost the entire town. It is picturesque due to amazing reservoirs and forests. It is worth learning more about the main attractions of Elektrostal, photos of which are in the article.

sights g elektrostal

The city was founded in 1916 thanks to the construction of a metallurgical plant. Previously, this place was the natural boundary of Calm. To start construction, the labor of local peasants was used. In the middle of 1925 herebuilt the first railway line that connected Elektrostal with Moscow. After the onset of 1938, the village turned into a separate city.

It is noteworthy that during the Great Patriotic War, the Electrostal plants produced ammunition that was needed for victory. In particular, it is worth noting the production of the legendary Katyushas.

A new stage for the factories of the city began after the invention of atomic weapons. The local plant was on the list of the main production facilities of the nuclear industry. This led to the fact that in 1954 the production of fuel was launched, which was used for the operation of nuclear power plants.

Image

In 1963, the cultural center "October" was built, and this was done by the masters of the Novo-Kramatorsky plant, named after Stalin. It featured a spacious auditorium that could seat more than 850 people, as well as a unique revolving stage for actors to change scenery in seconds.

At different times, eminent creative groups performed in this cultural center, as well as the Beryozka ensemble, famous at that time. It is noteworthy that even in our time the cultural center is actively functioning, and the square in front of it is considered the most beautiful place in Elektrostal with fountains operating in the summer. In mid-2013, it received the status of a city of labor and military glory.

There are many numerous monuments in the city that tell about the history of this amazing place: a monument to Nikolai Vtorov -the founder of the famous plant "Elektrostal" near the House of Culture, a monument to Tevosyan - the chief engineer, monuments to M. Gorky and K. Marx, a sculpture "Steelworker", a monument to Korneev - Hero of the Soviet Union, as well as a memorial and a monument to soldiers who died in Afghanistan and on North Caucasus.

This is a fairly large and old factory in the city that specializes in the production of fuel for local gas stations. The plant is part of the structure of the company FC "TVEL" of the state corporation "Rosatom". The General Director of the enterprise is O. L. Sedelnikov.

This plant produces nuclear fuel, which is used by many nuclear power plants, transport power plants and research reactors, not only in Russia, but also in other European countries. The company has quality certificates OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001, ISO 9001.

The museum of the plant presents its history, shows old photographs of the streets of the city, there are achievements of workers, as well as photos of significant people, there are many of the most interesting models produced at the machine-building plant. It also stores presentations showing the principles of the enterprise.

This temple - a landmark of Elektrostal - is a single-dome centric church, which is made in the style of Byzantine times. It was erected in the 20th century, in the immediate vicinity of St. Andrew's Church. The temple was designed by T. V. Trubnikov and V. A. Drozdov, according to the developments of which the iconostasis and interior were exactly designed.

The church plays the role of a baptismal church and belongs to the Moscow diocese. The main shrines of the church are the most ancient and valuable icons of Nikandor Gorodnoyezersky and the Great Martyr Panteleimon. In addition, particles of the relics of saints are kept here. Divine services are held in the temple only during religious holidays.

the main attractions of the electric steel

The local park - a landmark of Elektrostal is an ideal place where everyone can stay alone with nature, ride numerous attractions, and also spend time playing slot machines. The park is especially popular in the summer - it is full of families, youth companies and couples in love.

Especially for the summer in 2013, the park was re-planned, which made it possible to accommodate more modern entertainment and interesting playgrounds for young visitors. Swimmers will love the dragon and swans, and trampolines have been installed for more active children.

It is noteworthy that the prices in the local park are quite affordable: the cost of a ticket for various attractions ranges from 30-100 rubles. Today it is called "Wonder Park", and it is divided into a quieter "Quiet Alley" and "Entertainment Alley", where there is an inexpensive cafe, a summer stage, and also quite a lot ofattractions.

sights of electrostal

This cinema is very popular, so it can be called a landmark of Elektrostal. It is located in the shopping center "Elgrad" and consists of 5 spacious halls that can accommodate more than 800 people. To show 2D and 3D films, only modern equipment is used: Dolby Digital Surround EX and MasterImage acoustics, as well as huge screens with a special coating. In all cinema halls, very comfortable conditions for visitors were created: climate control and soft chairs.

In the foyer of the Cinema Gallery there is a play area, a fairly spacious cafe, fast food establishments (Suneki, Tashir-pizza, Rostiks, Kebab-tun, etc.) and popcorn- bar. This is an attractive local leisure center, where the residents of Elektrostal are shown all the latest cinema.

This is a whole complex where you can spend your free time pleasantly and profitably. In addition to the playgrounds, which are fully equipped for playing laser tag and paintball, guests are invited to visit a local cafe where delicious home-cooked dishes are prepared, a banquet menu, karaoke, as well as a relaxing sauna with a warm font.

What do tourists who have visited the city say? It is not tourist, but industrial. Attractions are quite specific, but overall interesting. Tourists were pleased with low prices.

Looking at the photo of the sights of the city of Elektrostal, you may want to go there and spendunforgettable weekend.

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

green sabah travel

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

green sabah travel

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

green sabah travel

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

green sabah travel

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

green sabah travel

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.
