Steve Hackett Genesis Greats, Lamb Highlights & Solo - 2024 tour

Legendary guitarist Steve Hackett announces the dates for his 2024 UK tour: Steve Hackett - Genesis Greats, Lamb Highlights & Solo . To mark the 50th anniversary of The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway , Hackett is including a selection of highlights from this iconic Genesis album.

Steve Hackett's timeless guitar-work was woven throughout Genesis' classic 70s catalogue of albums. In recent years he and his outstanding touring line-up of Roger King (keyboards), Nad Sylvan (vocals), Jonas Reingold (bass, backing vocals), Rob Townsend (saxophone, flutes, additional keyboards) and Craig Blundell (drums) have brought many of these albums back to the concert hall to great acclaim. Special guest, Amanda Lehmann will be joining the whole of the UK tour on guitar and vocals. Many fans have also been asking for more tracks from The Lamb to be included. What better way to celebrate half-a-century of this remarkable album than to include a selection of Lamb Highlights alongside some of Hackett's finest solo work and unmissable Genesis Greats .

"I'm hugely looking forward to the 2024 tour," says Steve Hackett, "including 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' favourites as well as other iconic Genesis numbers along with solo gems."

Steve Hackett brings “Genesis Revisited” world tour to Albany Sunday

Steve Hackett on stage in 2018.

Progressive rock legend Steve Hackett, best known as a member of Genesis, is bringing his world tour to The Egg in Albany on Sunday. WAMC spoke with him before the gig.

Hackett, 72, is renowned for his expansive, detailed song craft and innovative guitar playing. His sonic palate, rich in color and imagination, stands in stark contrast to where he was raised.

“I grew up in in an area called Pimlico, which was basically center of London on the River Thames. It was a heavily bombed area in the war. When I was growing up in Pimlico, there were lots of bomb sites. I mean, it wasn't exactly like Berlin at the end of the war, but you could see that many of the streets really have been damaged very badly and we grew up in apartments which were newly built. It was a very interesting time. In fact, I grew up in the shadow of what was to become Pink Floyd's most iconic album sleeve, the one with the flying pig in front of the Battersea Power Station. So the Battersea Power Station was the view from my bedroom window as as a kid. And a very powerful image it was too when that was working full steam, as it was in those days. It was one of the one of the biggest pollutants known to man at that point, it was the biggest building in Europe at that time. And I was facing that, the other side of the water, facing that thing belching out the smoke. Light and heat, it was producing all of that, but at the same time, it was creating the ash gray sky above with four smokestacks that were in constant use. And it was an extraordinary sight, both then and now. Now it's been turned into apartments, and it's iconic in a different way.”

A member of Genesis from 1971 to 1977, Hackett contributed to landmark albums like “Selling England by the Pound” and “The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway” before leaving to pursue a solo career. He says he likens his own work more and more to travelogues.

“If I brought it right up to date from those early efforts in the 1970s, the most recent album is 'Surrender of Silence,' where you have the influence of African music, the influence of Russian, oriental, as well as straight rock and electric guitars and all the rest, but a much wider selection of instruments, both orchestral and world music stuff. So, I think I always had this this travel bug ever since- When I was a kid, we emigrated to Canada in 1957. And as emigres, you know, that was a fantastic journey for me, just to be able to travel across the Atlantic on an ocean liner, and to see icebergs for the first time, and then to travel through Canada and to see the Rockies. First time I'd seen mountains, first time I'd seen icebergs, first time I'd seen the ocean- I mean, that was incredible stuff for a boy from the smoke, from the center.”

During the pandemic, Hackett posted a series of videos on YouTube explaining the background of a number of his compositions . Of the song “Behind The Smoke” from his 2017 record “The Night Siren,” Hackett speaks about the importance of supporting and protecting migrants and refugees. He tells WAMC the sentiment emerged from his own family history and the way he was received after moving to Canada as a child.

“The very first day we were there, there were some kids who came and knocked on the door and said, 'Can Steve come out to play?' That was that was extraordinary, very, very welcoming. The Canadians were very welcoming. And so there was a sense of community that was fantastic. There was Jericho Beach just around the corner, which was extraordinary, the vistas of that. But I think my sympathies for migrants, emigres, whatever you want to call it, and refugees, my family on my mother's side in the late 1800s were escaping pogroms in Eastern Europe. They came via Poland, made their way through to Portugal. They were Jewish on my on my mother's side, and then they were absorbed into into London as many people were at that time, into London's East End, where they worked very, very hard. Lost their original names as they were rechristened on the way in, so. And you know, I'm very proud of the heritage. And so when I hear people talking about migrants and economic migrants and the lack of sympathy and the compassion fatigue seems to be paramount in the world at the moment- It seems extraordinary to me that had those people escaped from oppression at that time, and if it were modern days, they would probably be interned somewhere.”

An inveterate traveler, one of Hackett’s favorite places to visit is as steeped in myth and legend as the prog anthems that have defined his career.

“I was at this place in England called Dartmoor. It's probably most famous for the story of, although it's a fictional story, 'The Hound of the Baskervilles,' written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the inventor of Sherlock Holmes. We were on Dartmoor, and my wife wanted to find, it was a particular configuration of standing stones, and quite by chance we happened upon it. We were with friends, and we saw some extraordinary stuff. So, sometimes just on your doorstep, that can be totally wonderful. So, I'm not sure if you can really describe it. I mean, it is a wilderness with wild ponies and the moors and many people have lost their way on it and lost their lives. There's a prison right in the center of it, and they reckon that if you managed to break out, the chances of surviving are pretty remote because it is so wild and desolate and unfriendly, of course. So it has sparked many, many a ghost story.”

On his current world tour, dubbed “Genesis Revisited,” Hackett reconnects with songs he wrote as long as 50 years ago.

A recent Genesis reunion that did not feature Hackett played its final show in London last month.

As he returns to the catalogue that kick started his career, Hackett likens the experience to reminiscing with an old friend.

“It's songs that have not only sprouted legs and have a life of their own, but also sprouted wings. And they have lasted, so they have become classic. Even if I didn't play them, there are tons and tons of tribute bands and schools that have done orchestral versions of these things and jazz versions and orchestras. And so it's music that, it will not lay down and die. It just doesn't do that. It carries on. So that's wonderful for music that we imagined would be here and then gone. And it seems like it's not. It seems like it's in for for the long haul. And people sometimes say, 'Well, this is a classical music of tomorrow.' And I love it when people say that.”

Steve Hackett joined Genesis at the beginning of 1971 and gained an international reputation as the guitarist in the band’s classic line-up alongside Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins. Hackett’s intricate guitar work was a key element of Genesis’ albums from Nursery Cryme (1971) to Wind And Wuthering (1977) including the classic Selling England By The Pound.

After leaving Genesis at the end of 1977, Hackett’s solo career, which now spans more than 30 albums, has demonstrated his extraordinary versatility with both electric and acoustic guitar. Hackett is renowned as both an immensely talented and innovative rock musician and a virtuoso classical guitarist and composer and this was recognised in 2010 when he was inducted into the Rock Hall Of Fame. He has also worked alongside Steve Howe of YES in the supergroup GTR.

Hackett’s compositions take influences from many genres, including jazz, classical and blues. For his later studio works The Night Siren (2017) and At The Edge Of Light (2019) Hackett has explored the influences of world music.

Recent tours have seen Hackett celebrate his time with Genesis including a spectacular 2018 tour in which he realised a long-held ambition to perform the works of Genesis live with his band and an orchestra.

The lockdown enforced by the 2020 global pandemic has proven to be a particularly creative period for Hackett. He began by releasing Selling England by the Pound & Spectral Mornings: Live at Hammersmith, a live recording of 2019’s hugely successful tour celebrating that Genesis classic together with the 40th anniversary of one of his most-loved solo albums.

Lockdown also gave Hackett the opportunity to write and record two new studio albums, the UK Classical Chart hit Under A Mediterranean Sky and the forthcoming Surrender of Silence.

Steve Hackett Flies the Classic Genesis Flag with “Seconds Out + More” Tour

Article contributed by sam a. marshall | published on wednesday, march 30, 2022.

hackettsongs tour

Recently, an amusing social media thread relating to British guitarist Steve Hackett – renowned for his early 1970s work with prog-rock pioneers Genesis – popped up online. The banter centered around the vocal abilities of Swedish rock singer Nad Sylvan, who has been fronting Hackett’s popular solo project Genesis Revisited since 2013. One commenter gushed about Sylvan’s range, praising him for his apparent ability to “channel” the voices of the two mercurial Genesis singers Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins “at the same time.” The other writer was diametrically opposite. “Sorry, mate, not even close!”

Well, everybody’s got one, right?

Since Hackett worked with both vocalists in Genesis’s definitive prog years, 1971 to 1977, he should know exactly what a singer needs to “deliver the goods” in a repertoire that encompasses that era. And if the enthusiastic reports from his band’s European performances on the “ Seconds Out + More” tour are any indication, Hackett must rightly feel that Sylvan was an inspired choice. One cranky Genesis fan’s opinion notwithstanding, Hackett’s fans seem to overwhelmingly agree that Sylvan is the real deal. And, lest we forget, they obviously think the band and their esteemed lead guitarist are pretty good, too!

“All of our tours have been very popular, and not just with longtime fans,” says Hackett, noting that all of his annual Genesis-themed tours since 2013 have done bang-up business globally. And, he adds, “ Seconds Out + More” is certainly competitive among them. “In Poland this year the audiences were very, very young – possibly seeing this music performed for the first time – and very eager for it. Tremendous experience. And, of course, I’m still flying the flag for the music I did with Genesis. I’m a big believer in it.”

Steve Hackett knows the 1977 double-LP live Genesis album Seconds Out holds a special place in the hearts of Genesis fans. Not only does it boast a well-curated set of both Gabriel- and Collins-voiced songs up to that point – but it also captured Hackett in his last live peak with Genesis. So it’s equally special for him. A couple of years ago, as the album’s 50-year mark began to draw closer, he recognized that it was about time to celebrate this personal triumph with full, live run-throughs again. Along with an opening set of music culled from his solo releases, such a long album makes for a long night!

Steve Hackett | Photo by Sam A. Marshall

Although the Seconds Out track list itself should come as no surprise to any die- hard Genesis fan, bonuses still lurk in the first set and the encore. These include breathtaking highlights from Hackett’s 1976 solo debut Voyage of the Acolyte and 1979’s Spectral Mornings, plus standouts from his 2021 album Surrender of Silence, and, of course , a stray Genesis gem or two . And a pleasant surprise for fans who haven’t heard his band perform the core Genesis songs in recent years, says Hackett, is some unexpected instrumental tweaks and re-grooves.

Backing Hackett on this tour are three longtime comrades, plus two more recent arrivals. On board with him since the first Genesis Revisited tour, in 2013, are keyboardist Roger King, saxophonist/flutist/percussionist Rob Townsend and vocalist/dramatist Nad Sylvan. And rounding out the rhythm section are bassist Jonas Reingold and drummer/percussionist Craig Blundell, both of whom first signed on for the 2019 tour. That tour and this one share a number of essential Genesis songs, so the duo were already dialed in for those parts of Seconds Out .

Steve Hackett | Photo by Sam A. Marshall

“There is crossover, and that was useful in putting the new show together,” says Hackett, acknowledging the 2019 tour featured the full 1973 Genesis album Selling England by the Pound plus other classics also on Seconds Out. That was Reingold’s and Blundell’s “boot camp,” in a sense. In the next few months, he adds, the band will still occasionally have a Pound make-up date to drop into the tour. So that’s two-way crossover. “Both Jonas and Craig are powerful performers. I love guys who can really play. And they bring their own experience, influences, and energy.”

When asked about why Genesis could inspire such passion in their fans, Hackett confirms that Italian audiences were among the first to embrace their music deeply in the early ‘70s.

“They heard elements of opera and storytelling in our songs, I think. This was familiar to them, from the music and mythology they knew,” he says, noting that the Genesis buzz in America “took a while longer” for the band to cultivate. A 1973 public endorsement from John Lennon certainly couldn’t have done any harm, either.

“Genesis did longer songs that told stories, and also longer-form things, such as ‘Supper’s Ready,’ in which there’s a journey, a personal odyssey,” he continues, alluding to a fan favorite that looms largely in this tour. “There are Classical music elements in these long pieces, and I’m proud of those influences, such as [Russian composer Sergei] Prokofiev, that I’ve also included on my latest record. I’m still very much a believer in long forms, because people seem to like pieces with many movements, many parts.”

Steve Hackett | Photo by Sam A. Marshall

Speaking of movement, we should note this ambitious, intercontinental tour is in full swing now, if with the occasional hitch. The second of two European Seconds Out legs wrapped in recent weeks, and soon – in the early days of April – Hackett and company will launch a roughly-35-date North American run in Boston, on Saturday, April 2. Originally, the tour had been scheduled for a March 26 start in Canada, but – due to Covid concerns – the four-date, Canadian lead-in series was just pushed back to late November.

Soon after the spring U.S. dates, a small batch of shows in Australia and New Zealand will follow, with possible rescheduling of 2021 Japan dates still TBA. Finally, upon returning from their long journey, the band will lean into more European and UK shows – including festivals – for the remainder of the summer. All in all, that’s nearly 60 more dates since the Fall 2021 and Winter 2022 chapters.

Most notably, tickets sales have been strong, with many shows selling out, reinforcing Hackett’s observation about how every Genesis Revisited tour has been “aces” with audiences. For the upcoming North American tour alone, more than a third of shows have sold through in advance. This suggests that Hackett’s instincts in choosing Seconds Out as a showpiece at this time – like his tapping Sylvan as his very own prog-rock, flag-bearing front man – were on target and that Genesis fans sense this tour is something special which may or may not pass this way again.

But fear not, devoted Hackett and Genesis fans: Dates for Steve Hackett & Genesis Revisited’s UK Fall tour, “ Foxtrot at 50 + More,” slated to begin on September 9, 2022, are already on sale.

Steve Hackett launches ‘Wherever You Are’; second track taken from ‘The Circus and the Nightwhale’

hackettsongs tour

Legendary rock guitarist Steve Hackett has announced that his new studio album ‘The Circus And The Nightwhale’ will be released on February 16th 2024, via InsideOut Music.

Now a brand new track has been released, the second single titled ‘Wherever You Are’, and you can watch the video now here:

Of the track, Steve comments: “’Wherever You Are’ is a song of love winning through, shattering the chains of the physical world… Light obliterating darkness. A new universe has opened up with the hope that such a strong love could even survive death. The dreams of childhood realised, there is a sense of everything coming around full circle… Even the three part harmony guitar at the end of Genesis’ The Musical Box is revisited in spirit with the joy of celebration during this song.”

‘The Circus And The Nightwhale’ is Steve’s first new music in over two years. It follows the beautiful acoustic LP ‘Under A Mediterranean Sky’ from January 2021 – which rose to No 2 in the UK Classical chart – and, in September of that year, his metallic masterpiece Surrender Of Silence, which hit the UK Top 40. His 2023 live album, ‘Foxtrot At Fifty + Hackett Highlights: Live in Brighton’, reached No 2 in the Rock & Metal Chart. Steve’s new LP promises ballads, blues, blistering progressive rock… and healthy measures of theatre and fantasia.

The new album is available to pre-order on several different formats, including a Limited CD+Blu-ray media book (including 5.1 Surround Sound & 24bit high resolution stereo mixes), Standard CD Jewel case, Gatefold 180g Vinyl LP & as Digital Album. All feature the stunning cover painting by Denise Marsh. Pre-order now here: https://stevehackett.lnk.to/TheCircusAndTheNightwhale

The full tracklisting is as follows: 1. People Of The Smoke 2. These Passing Clouds 3. Taking You Down 4. Found And Lost 5. Enter The Ring 6. Get Me Out! 7. Ghost Moon and Living Love 8. Circo Inferno 9. Breakout 10. All At Sea 11. Into The Nightwhale 12. Wherever You Are 13. White Dove

Summing up ‘The Circus And The Nightwhale’, Steve says: “It’s a lovely journey that starts dirty, scratchy and smoky and becomes heavenly and divine. How can you resist it?”

Steve is currently on tour in North America, continuing his ‘Foxtrot At Fifty + Hackett Highlights’ run. Next year he will tour the world extensively, including a brand new UK tour under the name ‘Genesis Greats, Lamb Highlights & Solo’ (that will see him return to the legendary Royal Albert Hall), as well as a return to the US for additional ‘Foxtrot At Fifty’ shows from March 1st through April 13th.
