Accommodation

Whether traversing the Great Ocean Walk , walking in Japan, exploring the Blue Mountains or walking in the remote wilderness of the outback, guests will be pampered at the end of the day in comfortable accommodation, in unique locations. We know the accommodation is important but not if we have to sacrifice the experience. We use the most authentic, characterful and intimate accommodations available. We know a friendly welcome, and all the comforts of home are worth their weight in gold, and that personality and family run is better than polished and impersonal.

We believe meals are to be remembered not just consumed. Meals are often accompanied with exceptional views or in a beautiful setting and you can be assured that fresh, locally sourced and high-quality ingredients are used. Local professional chefs prepare most breakfasts and dinners which enhances the food experience but also leaves more time for our guides to do what they love, that’s to guide.

We’re committed to creating and running our own trips

We have been designing walking holidays for nearly 30 years, so we know that the details are important. That’s why we have won more than a dozen tourism awards and are in the Adventure Tourism Hall of Fame. We create these once in a lifetime walking journeys which means we are hands-on with regard to our trips. We take pride in what we do, we’ve walked the tracks over and over (& over) to create the best possible experience for our walkers.

Slow travel

We love the idea of slow travel and we have perfected the notion of walking pack free at the perfect pace. Travelling on foot without a heavy pack means you slow down and really experience the world around you, the place and its people. Exploring pack free on foot is both eco-friendly and human-friendly. Carrying a very small backpack with less than a couple of kilos enhances the walking experience profoundly as does having access to a hot shower, a glass of wine, a good meal and a comfortable nights sleep.

Testimonials

What a fabulous trip – amazing hiking country and the alpine flowers in bloom made it stunningly pretty! We loved visiting the old cattlemen huts along the way and learning about the gold mining history of the region. All the accommodation and transport arrangements worked smoothly and we didn’t have to worry about a thing! Great standard of accommodation and food along the way and the local Auswalk contacts were so friendly, helpful, and supportive and very flexible to ensure our needs were met! Their local knowledge was invaluable. We felt very well looked after! Would definitely recommend this walk!

Had a great time doing this walk(despite of one rainy day) thanks to AUSWALK who had put together a great package of accommodation with luggage transfer. Nothing to do but enjoy the walk and at the end a good meal from friendly hosts.  I had a great time. Great job thanks Sanyana.

Just back from an impulsively-booked 7 day Snowies/Mt Kosciuszko walk with Auswalk. How else could one book an impulsive walking holiday in a longed-for destination and yet be thoroughly assured that the walk notes would be honed from years of expertise and local knowledge and contain everything to get us from A to Z. Meals beautifully catered with due care to any intolerances and chair-lift options already ticketed for those days when that last long steep and arduous ascent or descent is just a step too far after a long day spent revelling in the beauties and spectacles and bush picnics in the most idyllic settings! Never a doubt that our accommodation will be anything less than impeccable, nor that those responsible for smoothing and catering for our holiday and sending us on our way each day will be capable, reliable, punctual, knowledgeable and sincerely concerned for our wellbeing. Thank you Auswalk. Such a relief to be able to leave the plethora of intricate arrangements necessary for that 7 days of blissful freedom in your capable hands in the assurance that nothing would be forgotten.

My Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair trip was the first time I had used Auswalk. Very impressed with their professionalism. Very good communicators. Any questions are answered very promptly. Very easy to navigated booking and payment systems and best of all – all the arrangements they had made for my trip in Tasmania ran like clockwork. A good team using good people to deliver the promised services. Once you are in their care at the agreed starting point, you have no further worries, just enjoy the wonderful scenery of your walk until they deliver you back to an agreed finishing point. Very impressed, would certainly use Auswalk again and have no hesitation in highly recommending them.

This is my second Auswalk and again I can not fault the attention to detail of the Auswalk staff in the office and on the ground. A fabulous walk and excellent accommodation, great food and wine and the trail was challenging enough to make you feel like you earned what came next. The bonus is that you are submerged in the most stunning of environments with your friends and at the end of the day you get to sit back and be pampered and enjoy a night filled with laughter and conversation, 2 course meals and of course a few drinks,  One of the best walking holidays I’ve ever had and all in all a soul nourishing experience.

The Great Alpine Walk was fantastic. Being skiers who regularly spend time on the mountains in winter, it was very special to experience them in summer. Having completed many walking holidays, Auswalk continues to be the most professional, detail-oriented and experienced walking holiday company out there. Nothing is too hard.  The accommodation was great, and all the hosts (particularly in the mountains) were lovely. Being able to enjoy a glass of wine or two and a good meal at the end of a day’s hiking is the only way to do it!

This is the second walk with Auswalk we have done, and we are already planning our third (and fourth, and fifth…).

Maddie H – Great Alpine Walk

Absolutely amazing – have been raving about it all week to everyone I have met since returning home.

Nyla B  –  Gold Coast Hinterland

I had the BEST holiday with Auswalk exploring this beautiful country, up close and personal. Thanks Auswalk, especially our guides Katie and Bill. Fun group of fellow walkers, lots of laughs, smiles and stories to tell.

Therese D –  Flinders Ranges

Another fantastic experience walking on Lord Howe Island with Auswalk. Marie and Paul were excellent guides and I’ll certainly be doing another walk in the future.

Simone S – Lord Howe Island

Our Great Ocean Walk was excellent – we had a very friendly group of nine, led by guides Katie and Merel. The weather, scenery and environment all contributed to a wonderful week of hiking along a beautiful coastline. Our guides were experienced, caring, well organised and catered for our needs. Highly recommended.

Peter A –  Great Ocean Walk

Everything about this trip was fantastic and exceeded our expectations. It covered all the main areas in the Red Centre and covered all of the best walks possible. The guides were excellent and the food and accommodation enhanced this uniquely Australian experience.

I had a wonderful week and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. I would have no hesitation recommending Auswalk. The guides were fantastic and everything was extremely well organised from start to finish.

Luci W – Great Ocean Walk

This is my third self-guided walk with Auswalk and I’ve enjoyed every one. Auswalk had planned all itineraries and covered every contingency. All walks had spectacular scenery, delightful accommodation and delicious meals.

Leslie  – Grampians

Auswalk takes great care in providing the best experience possible, organising all the details so the walk is stress free and most enjoyable. Their guides are welcoming, professional and knowledgeable.

John and Trish P – Cape to Cape

I’ve done five walks with Auswalk and they’re a terrific company to deal with. All the guides share the same passion for their work and are always very informative and helpful. I thoroughly recommend Auswalk to anyone who is looking for the kind of holiday where all you have to do is turn up and walk. They take care of everything else.

Cathy R –  Flinders Ranges & Great Ocean Road Walk

Our walk was a wonderful experience. Auswalk did a great job organising everything and we felt well prepared with all the information they provided. There was so much diversity in flora, fauna, interesting landscapes and geology. We stayed in lovely accommodation and were fed delicious food with access to great local wines.

Caroline H – Cape to Cape

The trip was well organised and the information and the notes were well documented and very accurate.  It is clear that Auswalk updated their notes regularly. The accommodation was luxurious and the meals were delicious. There was a good variety and large servings of food, all combined to make this a very memorable trip.

Walking Tour 1 in Victoria

Walking Tour 1: The Inner Harbour

Start & Finish : The Visitor Centre (812 Wharf St.) on the Inner Harbour.

Time : 2 hours, not including shopping, museum, and pub breaks.

Best Time : Late afternoon, when the golden summer sunlight shines on the Fairmont Empress.

Worst Time : Late in the evening, when the shops close and the streets empty.

Victoria was born on the Inner Harbour. When the Hudson's Bay Company's west coast head of operations, James Douglas, happened across this sheltered inlet in 1843 while searching for a new corporate HQ, it was love at first sight. "The place appears a perfect Eden," he wrote to a friend. High praise indeed, although as Douglas was pretty deep into local real estate, his words should be taken with a wee pinch of salt. His confidence in the location certainly paid off, however, for less than 20 years after Douglas set foot onshore, the native stands of Garry oak had been supplanted by small farms, the town was choked with miners and mariners, and the harbor was full of ships, many of which had circled the globe. This tour circumnavigates the Inner Harbour, showing some of its lesser-known nooks and crannies while providing an opportunity to enjoy the same view seen by many a Victorian sailor.

1. Victoria Visitor Centre

At 812 Wharf St., this is without a doubt one of the finest-looking visitor centers in the world -- a masterful Art Deco pavilion topped with a shining white obelisk rising high above the Inner Harbour. It would be a tribute to the taste and vision of city tourism officials, except that it started out life as a gas station.

From the Visitor Centre, thread your way south through the jugglers and musicians on the causeway until you're opposite 721 Government St., where stands:

2. The Fairmont Empress

"There is a view, when the morning mists peel off the harbor, where the steamers tie up, of the Houses of Parliament on one hand, and a huge hotel on the other, which is an example of cunningly fitted-in waterfronts and facades worth a very long journey." Thus spoke Rudyard Kipling during a visit to the city in 1908. If he'd come only 5 years earlier, he would've been looking at a nasty, garbage-choked swamp. The causeway was then a narrow bridge over the tidal inlet, and as Victorians made a habit of pitching their refuse over the rail, the bay was, not surprisingly, a stinking cesspit of slime. In 1900, the ever-shrewd Canadian Pacific Railway made an offer to the city -- we'll build a causeway and fill in the stinky bay if you let us keep the land. The city jumped at the offer. Little was expected -- the land was swamp, after all. But taking their cue from the good folks in Amsterdam, the CPR drove long pilings down through the muck to provide a solid foundation. And on top of that, they built the Fairmont Empress. The architect was Francis Rattenbury, and his design was masterful, complementing his own Provincial Legislature Buildings to create the view that has defined the city ever since.

Around the south side of the Fairmont Empress is a formal rose garden -- worth putting your nose in for a sniff. Cut through the garden, cross over Belleville St. and continue another half-block east to the corner of Douglas St., where you'll find:

3. Thunderbird Park

The park is instantly recognizable by its forest of totem poles. Even if you've overdosed on the ubiquitous 15cm (6-in.) souvenir totem, take a second look at these. The original poles on this site had been collected in the early 1900s from various villages up and down the coast. Some decades later, when officials decided the severely weathered poles needed restoring, they discovered the art of native carving had eroded even more than their collection of poles. From all the thousands of carvers on the coast, only one man still carried on the craft. In 1952, Kwakiutl artist Mungo Martin set up a carving shed on the park grounds and began the work of restoration. Martin replaced or repaired all the existing poles while teaching his son and step-grandson-in-law to carve. Seeing them at work renewed public interest in the form. Other young artists came to learn and train, which led to a revival of totem carving and native artistry among coastal natives.

All poles have a purpose; most tell a story. The stories associated with the poles in Thunderbird Park have unfortunately been lost, but many of the figures are easily recognized, including Thunderbird (look for the outstretched wings and curly horns on the head), Raven, Bear, and Killer Whale. On the edge of the park is the shed where Martin carved many of the poles. Feel free to poke your head in to take a look and ask the carvers what they're up to. The artists generally welcome questions and enjoy sharing their stories.

Farther back in the park, at 638 Elliott St. Sq., stands the:

4. Helmcken House

This simple woodframe house, the oldest house in BC still standing in its original position, was built by Dr. John Sebastian Helmcken in 1852. A surgeon with the Hudson's Bay Company, Helmcken married the daughter of Governor James Douglas and went on to become a statesman and an important figure in the negotiations to allow British Columbia to become a province of Canada. The house, originally a three-room log cabin, is open daily from May through September noon to 4pm; admission is by donation (C$5 suggested).

Walk west along Belleville past the modern-looking Carillon Tower (a gift from the Dutch people who settled in BC) and the not-to-be-missed Royal BC Museum; cross Government St. You're now standing in front of 501 Belleville St. at the:

5. Provincial Legislature Buildings (Parliament)

In 1892, a 25-year-old Yorkshireman arrived on the west coast just as an architectural competition for a new Legislature Building in Victoria was announced. Francis Mawson Rattenbury had no professional credentials but was blessed with both talent and ambition. He submitted a set of drawings and, to the surprise of all, beat out 65 other entries from around the continent. The Provincial Legislature Buildings are open for tours 9am to 5pm. In summer, the 40-minute tours start every 20 minutes.

From the Legislature lawn, make your way past the horse-drawn calèches parked on Menzies St. and walk west on Belleville St. for 2 blocks to Pendray St. The road takes a sharp right, but follow the path leading down to a waterfront walkway as it curves around Laurel Point. Continuing around the pathway past the first few jetties takes you to the:

6. Coast Hotel Docks

Here is one of several ports of call for the Victoria Harbour Ferries (tel. 250/708-0201 ). From here, the official Frommer's route is to take the ferry all the way across the harbor to West Bay (the next stop on this tour). If the weather's clear, you'll enjoy views of the Olympic Mountains to the south and possibly spot a seal or bald eagle. You have several options here: You can take a short hop out to Fisherman's Wharf , where just-caught fish is sold when in season; go directly across to Spinnakers Brewpub (stop 8) on the far shore; take the ferry across to Songhees Point (stop 9); or go directly to Canoe (stop 11). You can even give up on your feet entirely and take the full Harbour Ferries tour.

If you stick with the program, however, the next stop is:

7. West Bay

While a pleasant little residential neighborhood with a picturesque marina, West Bay isn't anything to write home about. What is worthwhile, however, is the waterfront walkway that winds its way from here back east toward the city. The trail twists and curves through several parks, and views south through the harbor look out to the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Olympic Mountains beyond. After about 20 minutes of walking, it may be time to take a break:

8. Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub

Excellent beer brewed on the premises, combined with an above-average patio, make Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub a dangerously time-consuming port of call. For those looking for more substantial fare, the pub grub's very good, and the entrees are above average. The on-site bakery makes inspired beer bread, as well as a range of more delicate goods. 308 Catherine St. tel. 250/386-BREW (250/386-2739).

From the pub, continue along the shoreline until you see the totem pole standing at:

9. Songhees Point

The point is named for the First Nations tribe that once lived on the site. The Songhees had originally set up their village close to Fort Victoria, near the current site of Bastion Square, but relations with the Hudson's Bay Company were always strained. In 1844, a dispute over a pair of company oxen slaughtered by the Songhees was settled only after Commander Roderick Finlayson blew up the chief's house. A few years later, after a fire started in the native village, spread, and nearly burned down the fort, Finlayson told the Songhees to relocate across the Inner Harbour. They refused at first, pointing out quite rightly that as it was their land, they could live wherever they liked. They assented to the move only after Finlayson agreed to help dismantle and transport the Songhees' longhouses. The totem pole here is called the Spirit of Lakwammen, presented to the city to commemorate the 1994 Commonwealth Games.

Continue on the pathway around the corner. The patio of the Delta Victoria Ocean Pointe Resort provides a great view of the Fairmont Empress. A little farther on is the:

10. Johnson Street Bridge

The same guy who designed San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge also designed Victoria's Johnson Street Bridge. Alas, while the soaring Golden Gate span is justly famous for its elegance, this misshapen lump of steel and concrete is something designer Joseph Strauss would likely wish forgotten.

Cross the bridge, walk past the Esquimalt and Nanaimo (E&N) Railway station and turn left onto Store St. Walk 1 block north to Swift St., turn left and walk downhill to the end of the street:

While having a drink at Canoe, it's hard to know whom to admire more: the 19th-century engineers who built everything with brick and beam, and always twice as thick as it had to be; the restorers who took this old building (once the site of the City Light Company) and turned it into a sunlit cathedral of a room; the owner, who had the vision to pay the restorers; the chef, who made the delicious plate of appetizers now quickly disappearing from your table; or the brew master, whose copper cauldrons produce such a superior brew. Try the taster option -- six small glasses of different brews for about the price of a pint -- and toast them all. 450 Swift St. tel. 250/361-1940.

Salutations complete, wander back up Swift St., turn right and continue south down Store St. for 2 blocks, where Store St. becomes Wharf St. Walk another 3 blocks until you reach:

12. Bastion Square

This pleasant public space stands on the site of the Hudson's Bay Company's original Fort Victoria. The fort was demolished in 1863 and the land sold off for development. When the BC government bought and renovated the Rithet Building on the southwest corner of the square, workers uncovered Fort Victoria's original water well, complete with mechanical pump. It's now in the building's lobby. The square is home to the Maritime Museum..

Continue south on Wharf St. another 2 blocks until you come to the pinkish Dominion Customs House. Built in 1876, the Second Empire style was meant to impart a touch of European civilization in the midst of this raw wilderness town. Take the walkway by the Customs house down to the waterline and walk out on the:

13. Floatplane Docks

Early in the morning, these docks buzz with activity as floatplanes fly in and out on their way to and from Seattle, Vancouver, and points farther north. The docks are also the place to come to arrange diving and whale-watching tours.

Back up on Wharf St., you're just a hop, skip, and a jump from the Visitor Centre tower, where the tour began.

10 Top-Rated Hiking Trails near Victoria, BC

Written by Lana Law Updated Dec 23, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Surrounded by ocean and mountain views, Victoria is one of Canada's most scenic cities. Hiking trails in and around the city take advantage of the area's natural beauty and allow for quick escapes to mountaintops, waterfalls, and even historic sites. Some of the trails are in Victoria; others are up to 1.5 hours away. No matter where you go, the trails will quickly transport you from the hustle and bustle of the city to the peace and serenity of the wild.

The trails range from seaside or lakeside jaunts to forest walks through ancient trees and even heart-pumping mountain hikes. Different trails offer different experiences, but hikers of all levels of ability can find what they're looking for. Trailheads are well signposted, usually with maps, and trails are very well maintained. Most hiking trails are open year-round and are dog-friendly as long as pets are on a leash. Plan your day with our list of the best hikes around Victoria.

1. Coast Trail, Sooke

2. mount work hiking trail, 3. thetis lake hiking trail, 4. mount doug hiking trails, 5. niagara falls hiking trail, goldstream provincial park, 6. mount finlayson hiking trail, 7. kinsol trestle bridge trail, 8. mount tolmie, 9. mystic beach and sandcut beach hikes, 10. durrance lake hiking trail, where to stay in victoria, map of hiking trails near victoria, bc, victoria - climate chart.

Coast Trail near Aylard Farm

While many of the trails around Victoria take you to peaks or inland attractions, hiking along the coast is spectacular. The Coast Trail near Sooke is one of the most beautiful areas for hiking, with outstanding views to the snow-capped Olympic Mountains and soft-sand beaches to relax and take a break.

This is a 10-kilometer one-way trail, but most people only complete a section of it. The most popular area is accessed from Aylard Farm. Here, the trail begins at a lovely beach area, which is very popular on warm days, and then leads along the coast, meandering through trees and popping out onto rocks here and there.

One popular site along this hike is the petroglyphs. Out on a point overlooking the Juan De Fuca Strait, you'll see ancient images of a seal and a whale inscribed on the rocks. It's easy to miss, but a plaque marks the area.

The start of the hike is located in East Sooke Regional Park, set on a peninsula about 25 minutes from downtown Sooke or 45 minutes from downtown Victoria. The end of the hike is at Iron Mine Bay, a spectacular small cove at the far end of the park. The hike can also be tackled in the reverse direction, however the section from Iron Mine Bay heading south is much more difficult.

View from first lookout on Mount Work

For scenery and a modest workout, look no further than Mount Work. From the top, views to the south look out to the spectacular Olympic Mountains, and views to the north extend down Saanich Inlet. This is a wonderful 4.5-kilometer trail, which winds its way up through assorted large fir, arbutus, and cedar trees to two lookout areas.

The summit view provides the big vistas, where on a clear day, you can see beyond the ocean to the Olympic Mountains. The second view, just short of the top, looks in the opposite direction to Saanich Inlet and Mount Finlayson.

The lookouts offer wide-open areas of exposed rock, perfect for having lunch or just relaxing on a nice day. The trail is a fairly steady climb with the occasional steep section followed by a mellow area of gentle inclines. Total elevation gain is 230 meters. The trailhead is at the Ross Durrance Road Parking Lot in Mount Work Regional Park.

Thetis Lake Hiking Trail

Thetis Lake Regional Park is another multi-use area. Some people simply come to enjoy the beaches near the start of the trail, and others lace up their hiking boots and hike around the lake, which is divided into Upper and Lower Thetis Lakes. While there are several trails in the area, the longer trail takes you from the water's edge up to high rocks that offer fantastic lookouts over the lake and loops around Lower and Upper Thetis Lakes.

Unlike the ocean, the water here is warm and wonderful for swimming. Many people swim off the rocky shoreline along the hike. Arbutus trees add to the scenery. The five-kilometer loop trail is well maintained and gains and loses elevation as it circles the lakes. One of the most scenic parts of the trail follows along the east side of the lake, where you ascend to the top of a rocky bluff.

View out to sea from Mount Doug

The Mount Doug hiking trail provides one of the best views of Victoria, the surrounding areas, the Olympic Mountains, and if you are lucky, the massive dome of Mount Baker.

Mount Doug is crisscrossed with a multitude of hiking trails, so finding your way to the top can be confusing. An excellent, detailed map is right at the entrance by the big sign welcoming you to the park at the main parking lot off Cedar Hills road.

To get to the top, you have several choices, none of them easy. Count on a tough uphill walk that will get your heart pumping on the way up and your knees aching on the way down.

If your route-finding skills are not up to the task and you prefer a level surface, just continue walking up Churchill Drive beyond the gate as it twists and turns its way 1.5 kilometers to the top. To come back down, just walk the same way.

View over Victoria from Mount Doug

Should you prefer a more traditional hiking trail that winds its way through large trees, follow the Irvine trail . The trailhead for this route leaves from Churchill drive on the right, just past the bicycle racks in the parking lot. Irvine trail crosses Churchill Drive; you have to make sure to stay to the right of the road heading uphill. If you go left, you'll still make it to the top, but the route is longer, and you will need to connect with both the Whitaker and Glendenning trails, which can be quite steep.

A good option that many people enjoy is to take Irvine trail to the top and walk back down Churchill Drive.

If all this feels a bit overwhelming, you can actually drive to almost the top of the mountain, and walk the final short stretch. Churchill Drive is open to cars from 12 noon to dusk seven days a week.

Niagara Falls

The name of this trail is a bit grandiose; nevertheless, it's definitely worth doing and even includes walking through a tunnel. The trail is relatively easy at 1.3 kilometers round trip, perfect for a family outing.

This is an easy hike to a spectacular 47-meter waterfall tumbling off a sheer cliff face, surrounded by lush vegetation. Depending on how nimble you are, you can walk and scramble right up to the deep pool at the base of the falls.

The falls can be accessed from two parking areas, although one is small and unmarked, making it difficult to find. Most people begin at the day use area on the north side of the highway. This short hike follows a path through a large but short tunnel under the highway, and then continues up the usually dry riverbed towards the falls. If the river is flowing due to recent heavy rains, you'll need to park at the small unmarked parking area on the south side of the highway. From this parking area, it's just a few hundred meters to the falls.

Above Niagara Falls is an abandoned railway bridge from 1910. Many people used to continue on past the falls to this bridge for the thrill of walking out it, and for the views of Mount Finlayson. However, this trail is no longer an option. The access to the bridge has now been blocked, and the trails leading to the area are decommissioned.

Mount Finlayson

Mount Finlayson is a steep, four-kilometer round-trip hike with significant elevation but provides 360-degree views out over the surrounding areas, and on a clear day, even Mount Baker can be seen in the distance.

There are two routes to the top. The route leaving from the day use area ascends 410 meters, weaving its way through the forest before it emerges onto an open and exposed rock. Some areas will require using your hands to help with the steep climb. The other route, leaving from Finlayson Arm, is a gentler, less busy route and more like a traditional hiking trail. It's recommended that you go up and back the same way in order to end up back at your original trailhead.

Kinsol Trestle Bridge

This three-kilometer round-trip hike follows an old railbed. As you can imagine, it's flat and wide and a great trail for any level of ability. People bike, ride their horse, or push a stroller along the path. And while the trail might not be particularly dynamic, the wooden trestle bridge at the end of the path is. One of the world's tallest free-standing timber trestle bridges, it stands 44 meters high and is 187 meters long.

One of the unique features of the design, apart from the size, is the seven-degree curve of the structure. You can walk over the bridge, which no longer has railroad ties but a flat boardwalk instead. At the far end of the bridge, a trail leads down the bank to the river, so you can walk below the bridge. Historical information boards at the start of the trail and on the bridge itself provide background and history of how the bridge was built and later restored.

View from Mount Tolmie

Mount Tolmie is a wonderful walking area right in the city. For hikers who don't want to venture out into the wilderness on their own, this is an attractive alternative. You can drive yourself to the top of Mount Tolmie for 360-degree views out over Victoria and then start your hike. The road twists and turns as it takes you through a beautiful neighborhood and emerges at the top.

Short trails from the parking area and around the peak can be combined to make a 1.2-kilometer loop. You'll see benches and scenic areas along the way where you can relax and enjoy the views. One area of interest at the top is a huge concrete slab dating from WWII, once part of the Canadian defense system. Parking at the very top is relatively limited, however, a larger lot is located a short distance down the hill.

Mystic Falls on the Mystic Beach hike

If you don't mind venturing out from Victoria, two of the most spectacular hikes along the Juan de Fuca Strait will be your reward. The two hikes are located near Jordan River, just over an hour from downtown Victoria. Both can be tackled in one day, as one is much shorter than the other.

The most impressive is the hike to Mystic Beach to see Mystic Falls . Try to time this hike for low tide and preferably in the afternoon when the sun is hitting the falls.

This is a lovely four-kilometer round-trip hike along the Juan de Fuca Trail, to Mystic Falls. The trail cuts through the forest and over an endless tangle of roots carpeting the forest floor at the base of the huge trees that tower overhead. Along the way, a long suspension bridge crosses over scenic Pete Wolfe Creek. Closer to the beach, the trail descends rapidly over a series of boardwalks and down a long set of stairs, some of which are carved into a giant tree trunk.

Eventually you'll emerge onto Mystic Beach and fantastic views of the Olympic Mountains. Turn left, and walk a short distance to where you'll see Mystic Falls tumbling off a high ledge to the sand below. The falls are in a particularly spectacular setting, with the tumbling surf on one side and dark, rocky headlands to the other.

If you've packed a picnic lunch, grab one of the smooth rocks nearby, or set up under the cliffs and enjoy your meal while keeping an eye out for curious seals in the shallows just offshore. Return the same way you came.

It's very important to wear appropriate footwear on this hike; the trail is full of slippery tree roots and its very easy to turn an ankle. The trail starts at the parking lot for the beginning of the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail. This is the first parking lot on the right you come to when you turn off at the China Beach signs. Follow the signs to the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail; you will not see any signs indicating Mystic Beach, it's only one spot on the longer trail.

This trail can be almost cut in half if you take an unmarked route that leaves from the highway just past the Pete Wolf Creek bridge. Just keep an eye out for cars parked in this area, and you'll know you've found the right spot.

A hiker on Sandcut Beach

After visiting Mystic Falls, jump back in the car and head back towards Victoria to the trailhead for Sandcut Beach . This is a delightful two-kilometer round-trip trail perfect for families with small children. Most people reach the falls in about 15 minutes. The trail is fun; some of it is on boardwalks, and some is on the back of massive fallen trees.

The trail is easy to follow as it winds its way through huge, moss-covered trees past gurgling streams, eventually ending at a long set of stairs leading to the ocean. This beach is a local's favorite owing to its ease of access and relative obscurity.

At this point, facing the ocean, turn left and walk along the beach to the falls, approximately 500 meters away. The falls tumble majestically off a small ledge onto the beach. The ledge creates a dry area in behind the falls, which is fun to explore and great for photos. To return to the parking area, just retrace your steps.

Durrance Lake

Durrance Lake, in Durance Lake Regional Park, is an easy and short hike around a sparkling blue lake surrounded by tall trees. The trail passes by a picnic area and a small beach near the start and provides views of Mount Werk. The lake warms up in the summer, so bring your bathing suit or at the very least pack a lunch to have at the picnic tables set just back from the water.

The 1.7-kilometer trail begins wide and then narrows as it loops around the backside of the lake. This trail is perfect for all levels of hikers. The parking lot fills up quickly on warm weekends and note that there is no parking allowed on the access road.

Luxury Hotels:

  • For the quintessential Victoria experience, staying on the Inner Harbour is the best choice. This is where you'll find the landmark Fairmont Empress . This historical hotel oozes charm, elegance, and luxury.
  • Across the harbor from the Empress is the Delta Hotels Victoria Ocean Pointe Resort . This modern hotel boasts rooms with incredible views, a well-respected restaurant, and is within walking distance of restaurants and shops.
  • Those looking for a boutique luxury hotel for a romantic getaway or relaxing retreat will enjoy Abigail's Hotel . This adult-only property is set in a 1930s Tudor Mansion in a beautiful residential neighborhood, and only a 15-minute walk from the harbor area.

Mid-Range Hotels:

  • Close to the harbor is the pet-friendly Huntingdon Manor , with a classic and elegant style that sets it apart from other properties in the area. You can choose from recently renovated standard rooms or two-story suites with lofts, and some rooms offer views of the harbor.
  • The eco-conscious Hotel Rialto is a boutique hotel in a convenient location in the city center. Rooms come with mini-fridge and microwaves, and staff members are happy to help arrange tours and activities.
  • If you are more interested in long walks along the seashore than exploring the harbor, the Oak Bay Beach Hotel is a good seaside option. This hotel is located near the trendy shops of Oak Bay and is noted for its mineral pools and amazing views out over the Juan de Fuca Strait.

Budget Hotels:

  • Most of the budget hotels are back a bit from the Inner Harbour, however, this is not really a big issue as Victoria is a compact city, and nothing is much more than a 15-minute drive. With decent rooms and a good location, close to the harbor and near the Save On Memorial Arena, is the Capital City Center Hotel.
  • The Days Inn by Wyndham Victoria Uptown is on the main bus route to downtown and has spacious rooms along with a pool and sauna.
  • The Arbutus Inn is another decent budget hotel and close to an excellent assortment of restaurants.

The cost of bread, biscuits and beer could increase this year due to the impact of the unusually wet autumn and winter on UK harvests.

Research suggests that production of wheat, oats, barley and oilseed rape could drop by four million tonnes (17.5%) compared with 2023.

The wet weather has resulted in lower levels of planting, while flooding and storms over winter caused farmers more losses.

The predictions come just as the rate of price increases on many food items begins to slow as inflation falls.

The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) analysed forecasts from the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHBD) and government yield data.

It found a "real risk" of beer, biscuits and bread becoming more expensive if the poor harvest increases costs for producers, according to its lead analyst Tom Lancaster.

Beer prices could be affected because the wet weather is still disrupting the planting of spring crops such as barley, the ECIU said.

And potatoes might also see a price hike in the coming months, with growers warning of a major shortage in the autumn due to persistent wet weather.

When I think about the toys of my childhood - my pink Barbie car, my Gameboy Micro, my collection of Pokemon cards - I can't tell you where they went.

Maybe they were shipped off to a charity shop at some point... Or perhaps they're in the attic?

While my hot pink Gameboy Micro is lost to the void of time (or a cardboard box somewhere in my mum's house), other versions of it are selling on eBay for £100 or more.

And there are Pokemon cards selling for anything from a tenner to hundreds or even thousands of pounds.

It's possible you also have items at home that are a collector's dream.

Gumtree says its collectables category is already proving to be a "hotbed of activity" this year, with listings up 22% in 2024 so far.

Its most popular items include rare stamps, coins, war memorabilia and Pokemon cards.

Spring is often the most popular time for buying and selling collectibles, with demand spiking in March and April.

We've enlisted the help of TV presenter and collectables expert Tracy Martin to give an idea of what could make you an easy buck.

Old toys making a 'retro comeback'

Tracy explains that while trends change, vintage toys tend to stand the test of time.

"Toys are always going to be popular because they tap into nostalgia, our childhood memories," she says, explaining that adults like to buy the toys they used to have.

Perhaps you were into cars, and you've got some old diecast vehicles from Matchbox, Corgi or Dinky Toys.

A quick look on toy auction site Vectis.co.uk shows a Corgi Toys "James Bond" Aston Martin estimated to sell for between £600 to £700 - while others are likely to fetch £50 to £60.

Sindy dolls are also particularly sought after - particularly those from the 1960s - and Barbie dolls from the 1990s too.

Pokemon cards have seen a "massive surge", Tracy says, with people paying "thousands and thousands of pounds" for good unopened sets.

She's even seen examples of people paying £16,000 upwards.

Another up-and-coming market is games consoles, such as Gameboys, vintage consoles and PlayStations, which are making a "retro comeback".

What else could earn you some cash?

Tracy says there's currently a surge in people wanting to buy "mid century" furniture, which is dated to roughly 1945 to 1965 and typically uses clean lines and has a timeless feel.

Vintage Danish furniture is sought after, particularly tables and chairs with good designer names such as Wegner, Verner Panton and Arne Jacobsen.

Prices range from the low hundreds into the thousands.

People will also look out for vintage framed prints by artists such as Tretchikoff, J.H. Lynch and Shabner - these can range in price from £50 upwards to a few hundred pounds plus.

Vintage clothes, handbags and shoes can fetch a good price - but you can also invest in modern pieces.

Tracy suggests looking out for good classic designs with high-end designer names such as Gucci, Chanel, Dior and Louis Vuitton.

Modern designers such as Irregular Choice, Vendula and Lulu Guinness are also collected.

Collaborations with designers and celebrities can do well as they're often limited edition.

For example, Tracy says the H&M x Paco Rabanne maxi silver sequin dress retailed at £279.99 last year but now sells for in excess of £600.

When it comes to shoes, "the quirkier the design the better" - so look out for brands such as Irregular Choice and Joe Browns.

Converse and Dr Martens collaborations also do well, depending on the design and condition, as well as Adidas and Nike limited edition trainers.

What's the best way to sell?

Tracy recommends to always research before selling your items, as they might perform better on different platforms and you can also get an idea of how much they sell for.

For example, Vinted can be a good place to sell clothes and shoes, while other items might be better suited for sale on Gumtree, eBay or Etsy.

Tracy's favourite way to sell is through auction - especially if there are specialist sales.

Vectis is one of the biggest and most popular for toy selling.

Interests in different periods and items can go up and down, but for the time being vintage pieces from the 1980s and 90s are popular.

How much you'll be able to get from an item often takes into account its rarity, condition, whether it reflects a period in time, and if it's got a good name behind it.

You never know - you might be sitting on a treasure trove.

Annual mortgage repayments have increased by up to 70% since 2021, according to new data from Zoopla .

The biggest impact of rising interest rates has been in southern England where house prices are higher.

Across the South West, South East and East of England, the annual mortgage cost for an average home is £5,000 higher than previously. This rises to £7,500 in London.

But the universal uptick in mortgage costs has been less pronounced in other parts of the UK, with the North East seeing a £2,350 increase.

In a bid to tackle inflation, the Bank of England has raised the base rate from 0.1% in December 2021 to a 16-year high of 5.25% now.

The Zoopla research looked at the average home buyer taking out a 70% loan-to-value mortgage.

This week seems to be starting where last week left off - with three major lenders announcing further hikes in mortgage rates.

Amid uncertainty of the timing of interest rate cuts from the Bank of England  this year, swap rates (which dictate how much it costs lenders to lend) have been rising in recent weeks.

Financial markets currently see two rate cuts by the Bank of England this year.

We've reported on a string of rate bumps from the high street over the last 10 days, and this morning NatWest, Santander and Nationwide moved.

In its second hikes announcement in less than a week, NatWest laid out increases across its full range of residential and buy-to-let fixed deals of up to 0.22%.

Santander, meanwhile, announced increases for both fixed and tracker deals across their residential and buy-to-let products - up to 0.25%.

The same hikes are being imposed for a range of Nationwide deals.

All of these will kick in tomorrow.

Amit Patel, adviser at Trinity Finance, told Newspage it was "not a great start to the week".

"This is not good news for borrowers," he said.

Where will the base rate go this year?

The majority of the bets, according to LSEG data, are on the first cut coming in August (previously this was June) and the second in December.

This would take Bank rate from the current level of 5.25% to 4.75%.

Disabled people could receive vouchers instead of monthly payments under proposed changes to Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

The changes could see people being provided with either one-off grants for specific costs such as home adaptation, or being directed to "alternative means of support" rather than financial support.

Work and Pensions Secretary Mel Stride is set to announce plans today to overhaul the way disability benefits work.

In a Green Paper due to be published alongside Mr Stride's statement to the Commons, ministers will set out plans to reform Personal Independence Payments (PIP), the main disability benefit, through changes to eligibility criteria and assessments.

The plans also include proposals to "move away from a fixed cash benefit system", meaning people with some conditions, such as depression and anxiety, will no longer receive regular payments but rather get improved access to treatment if their condition does not involve extra costs.

Speaking to Sky News earlier, Mr Stride said: "I want us to have a grown-up, sensible conversation about a benefit called PIP that has not been reviewed in over a decade.

"And I want to ask the question, is it fit for purpose given the world that we're in today, in which mental health issues sadly present more of an issue than they did a decade ago."

A fresh high for the FTSE 100 to start the week.

The index of leading shares in London was 0.5% up at 8,179 in early dealing.

The gains were led by miners and financial stocks.

Dragging on the performance were some consumer-facing brands including JD Sports and Flutter Entertainment.

One other development of note to mention is that stubbornly high oil price.

A barrel of Brent crude is currently trading almost 1% down on the day.

But it remains at $88 a barrel.

The market has been pulled by various forces this month, with hopes of a rebound in demand in China among them.

The latest decline is said to reflect peace talks being held between Israel and Hamas.

A demand for smaller homes has driven growth in UK property prices early in 2024, according to research by Halifax.

Data from the bank's house price index suggests annual property price growth hit 1.9% in February this year - a significant rise from -4.1% just three months prior.

That equates to a rise in prices of £5,318 over the past year.

It follows interest rates stabilising, Halifax says, after a sharp rise over the past two years which squeezed mortgage affordability.

A key driver behind rising prices, Halifax says, has been first-time buyers, who made up 53% of all homes bought with a mortgage in 2023 - the highest proportion since 1995.

And it's smaller homes that have recorded the biggest increases in price growth in the early part of this year - with buyers adjusting their expectations to compensate for higher borrowing costs.

Flats and terraced houses made up 57% of all homes purchased by first-time buyers last year.

This varies by region - for example, in London, flats and terraced homes accounted for 90% of all first-time buyer purchases.

Challenges remain

However, Amanda Bryden, head of Halifax mortgages, said "it's important not to gloss over the challenges" facing the UK housing market, given the "impact of higher interest rates on mortgage affordability" and "continued lack of supply of new homes".

"But scratch beneath the surface and there is a more nuanced story, one which shows that demand for different property types in different parts of the country can vary hugely," she added.

"As interest rates have stabilised and buyers adjust to the new economic reality of owning a home, one way to compensate for higher borrowing costs is to target smaller properties.

"This is especially true among first-time buyers, who have proven to be resilient over recent years, and now account for the largest proportion of homes purchased with a mortgage in almost 30 years."

Every Monday we get an expert to answer your money problems or consumer disputes. Find out how to submit yours at the bottom of this post. Today's question is...

I had a company coat the exterior of my house with a rubberised paint product in November 2022. The original cost was £3,280 - though there was a discount. This came with a written 10-year warranty. The product started to fail after five months (peeling off). I first contacted them one year ago, on 3 April 2023, and the company keeps fobbing me off, blaming bad weather for not resolving issues. They don't come round when they say they will. What can I do? Robert Anderson, 77, Scotland

We asked consumer disputes expert Scott Dixon, from complaintsresolver.co.uk , to pick up this one...

This falls under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 which states that any faults found within the first six months are considered to have been there at the point of purchase (or in this case, application).

You are entitled to one free repair under S49 Consumer Rights Act 2015 which states that every contract to supply a service is to be treated as including a term that the trader must perform the service with reasonable care and skill.

Traders can only have one crack at the same fault - if that fails, you are entitled to a refund/replacement.

You have two options: make a warranty claim/pursue a remedy under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

How did you pay for it? If you paid (even just the deposit) by credit card, you can make a S75 claim against the credit card provider who is jointly liable under S75 Consumer Credit Act 1974.

If the trader is unwilling to remedy it, seek at least three quotes from other traders to price putting the job right. You can get another trader to remedy the job and invoice the original trader for the work.

I know what you're thinking: what happens if they refuse to pay?

Options and next steps

If all else fails... You could take your case to the small claims court if it was England, or follow Simple Procedure in Scotland .

Before you file a claim, send screenshots to the company of the court papers setting your case out and demanding a refund within seven days. Tell the company that if they fail to do so, you will lodge a claim via Simple Procedure.

It is a relatively easy, inexpensive route and is designed for disputes such as this. Court fees are based on the amount of money you want to claim.

This may resolve the dispute. If it does not, you can proceed and file the small claim papers online.

Another option is to file for their bankruptcy as a creditor, which is free. It effectively freezes their bank accounts and credit lines and locks their business down until it is resolved. You can find an SD1 form to do this here .

I have done this before and it works like a charm. You need to send any documents by recorded delivery. This is a last resort if you cannot resolve your dispute.

I would also report this firm to Trading Standards. Ensure that you point out that they are deliberately selling products and carrying out defective work without due care and skill, which is fraudulent and illegal. You have proof of this so make sure you provide it.

Finally, leave reviews online too.

Money team note : We got in touch with the company involved, who said they had agreed to recoat the building at no cost but that dry days were needed before and after to fit the product in line with the manufacturer's guidelines. They said they had contacted Mr Anderson last week. We decided not to name the company as it is a small business - but we'll follow up this case in summer.

This feature is not intended as financial advice - the aim is to give an overview of the things you should think about.  Submit your dilemma or consumer dispute via - and please leave your contact details as we cannot follow up consumer disputes without them.

Britons could face higher food prices, and even empty supermarket shelves, as new post-Brexit border fees are introduced this week, industry figures have warned.

A maximum charge of £145 will apply on imports of plant and animal products, such as cheese and fish, entering the UK through the Port of Dover and Eurotunnel from Tuesday.

"The fundamental change is huge to the nation's food supply," Nigel Jenney, chief executive of the Fresh Produce Consortium (FPC), told the Money blog when we first covered this story in January.

"I would certainly expect to see price rises because these costs simply couldn't be absorbed by the industry."

James Barnes, chairman of the Horticultural Trades Association, said this month that the policy "feels like it is constructed on the back of an envelope at best" and that the charges would "undoubtedly increase costs" and increase the likelihood of empty shelves in supermarkets.

He said as well as higher prices and a more limited variety of products available in UK shops and restaurants, "we now might begin to observe a decline of EU businesses trading into the UK, simply because they have been priced out".

The new rules explained

The new rules, known as the Border Target Operating Model (BTOM), are intended to protect biosecurity by imposing controls on plant and animal products considered a "medium" risk. These include five categories of cut flowers, cheese and other dairy produce, chilled and frozen meat, and fish.

From 31 January, each shipment had to be accompanied by a health certificate, provided by a local vet in the case of animal produce, and, from Tuesday, shipments will be subject to physical checks at the British border.

There is also the prospect of delays caused by inspections of faulty paperwork, which could derail supply chains that rely entirely on fast turnaround of goods.

The policy has been delayed multiple times and earlier this month the Financial Times reported that the government would not "turn on" the checks this week because border systems were not fully ready. The government said this was not true - but indicated they would initially focus on higher-risk products.

The fee will be charged per type of product imported, and will vary from £10 to £29 depending on the risk products present. It will be capped at £145 for mixed consignments.

A government spokesperson said this was "within and at the bottom end of the range which we consulted with industry on".

They added: "The charge is designed to recover the costs of operating our world-class border facilities where essential biosecurity checks will protect our food supply, farmers and environment against costly disease outbreaks entering the UK through the short straits."

The fees will not apply to goods brought into the UK for personal use, the government said.

EU business 'could stop trading with UK'

Marc Forgione, director general of the Institute of Export and International Trade (IEIT), said there was another risk beyond price rises and potential shrinkflation.

He told the Money blog earlier this year: "There is also a concern that has been raised with me by some UK-based businesses that their suppliers in the EU will frankly take a view that it's too complicated to deal with these changes and withdraw from the market."

Mr Forgione said that over time the UK will have "the most efficient border in the world", due to digitisation and the BTOM's assessment of goods based on risk, but it will create friction for EU businesses where there was none.

What has the government said?

A spokesperson told us when we first covered this story in January: "We remain committed to delivering the most advanced border in the world.

"The changes we're bringing in will help keep the UK safe, while protecting our food supply chains and our agricultural sector from disease outbreaks that would cause significant economic harm."
