7 U.S. Cities That Are Hipper Than You Think

Sick of $400 hotel rooms, tourist-flooded attractions, and overpriced restaurants? Take a trip to one of America’s hippest small towns. Offering equal parts art, culture, and cool factor, towns like Boise, Kansas City, and others are giving XXL metropolises like NYC and LA a run for their money. Here, 7 unexpectedly hip towns worth downsizing for.

Cincinnati has plenty of Old World charm—19th-century Art Deco architecture, historic breweries, European-style neighborhoods. But the city has also seen a great cultural revival in the past couple of years, with buzzy storefronts, boutique hotels, standout restaurants and hip bars popping up. This transformation is no more apparent than in the city’s Over-the-Rhine district—the once epicenter of German immigrant society—where an $80 million revitalization has added cool new shops (we love the craft shop MiCA 12/V ), local art galleries, and charming cafes (check out Iris BookCafé, which has a secret garden replete with sculptures). Stop for a sweet bite at Holtman’s Donuts , a family-owned chain dating back to 1960, before heading to the Zaha Hadid-designed Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center , the first freestanding American museum designed by a woman (inside, you’ll find cutting-edge photography, film, and performance art). Another must-stop: The Video Archive , a Quentin Tarantino-themed speakeasy concealed behind a door in a storefront made to look like a VHS rental shop. Make your home base the art-filled 21C Museum Hotel , where there’s a free contemporary art gallery, a rooftop bar, and a see-and-be-seen restaurant.

Boise has earned a reputation as a culinary hotspot in recent years— its third-wave coffee roasters, gourmet donut shops, and tasting-menu restaurants on par with what you’d find in Portland or Seattle. Start your eatathon off with the three-hour Boise Food Tour , which covers 1.5 miles of downtown and may include stops at Juniper , a farm-to fork restaurant with an emphasis on local ingredients; Guru Donut , which sells cake and vegan varieties inspired by a handwritten 1940s donut recipe; and Mai Thai , home to some of the best Asian food in the city. Work it all off by hiking, running, or biking through The Boise Foothills, which surround the city and offer 180 miles of trails. We recommend you stay at The Modern , a motel-turned boutique hotel in the city’s Linen District, where you can unpack in your retro-chic guest room and grab a drink at the buzzy cocktail bar.

Hot hotels, a booming culinary scene, and an increasingly youthful vibe are transforming the hippest part of North Carolina’s bookish research triangle (which also includes Raleigh and Chapel Hill). Check into the 21c , a 125-key modern stunner occupying a 1930s-landmark building downtown, where contemporary arts and cultural programs are held across 10,500 square feet of exhibition space. There's also  The Durham across the street, with 53 rooms done up in poppy colors—bright yellows, blues and reds—and a slick rooftop bar. Grab a coffee and a sweet bite at Cocoa Cinnamon before heading to the Duke University campus to stroll through the Sarah P. Duke Gardens , one of the premier public gardens in the U.S. with 200-plus colorful plant varieties, and see the latest show at the Nasher Museum of Art, where previous exhibitions have included work by Henri Matisse, Ed Ruscha, and Joan Miró. For dinner, tuck into fresh seasonal dishes like paneer stuffed squash blossoms and farm duck with shiitake mushrooms, wheatberries, and sweet potato mostarda at Piedmont before catching a show at the $48 million Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC).

What's not to love about Louisville? It's got killer food, music, and a unique Southern style. Bardstown Road is lined with lively bars serving local ales, craft cocktails, and, of course, bourbon—just make sure to fill your stomach with a Kentucky Hot Brown sandwich before you set out. As for where to stay? The 21c Museum Hotel Louisville is our favorite crash pad, thanks to its vast contemporary art collection, airy guest rooms with high ceilings and exposed brick, and an award-winning restaurant. If the hotel's art collection isn't cutting it, check out the Speed Art Museum , which recently underwent a $50-million renovation and expansion and has a collection spanning 6,000 years.

Kansas City

KC offers the perfect mix of high and low culture: world-class museums, next-level BBQ joints, lively sports bars, boutique shops, and more fountains than Rome (allegedly). Stay in the heart of the city at The Fontaine , which has design-forward interiors (dark woods, Persian-style carpets, chandeliers made of hand-blow Venetian glass) and an outdoor rooftop pool. From there, take an Uber to the Crossroads arts district to shop at local spots like Coki Bijoux , a French-inspired jewelry boutique tucked away in a brick alley, and Hammerpress for exquisitely designed cards and posters fresh off the printing press. For more shopping, head to Baldwin KC to rifle through stacks of selvedge denim and shop the line’s iconic vintage-inspired “KC” baseball hats. Alternatively, check out the city's thriving art scene: you can catch a concert at the Moshe Safdie-designed Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts  or browse the Bloch Galleries at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art (we especially love the new collection of Impressionist art and Art Nouveau artifacts). Our favorite spot for dinner is Port Fonda , which serves authentic Mexican eats and hosts an unbeatable happy hour with margaritas and carnitas tacos.

Minneapolis

It may be known for its Midwestern friendless and summer lake culture, but Minneapolis has a seriously creative side, too. Just look to the North Loop's Hewing Hotel , a 19th-century logging warehouse that brings together masculine, contemporary design and rustic lake house vibes. The brick-and-timber building has original pine timber beams, walls covered in work by local artists and photographers, and a rooftop Social Club. It’s a great starting point to check out dining hotspots like Bar La Grassa and The Bachelor Farmer , a slick but inviting Scandinavian restaurant. If you're pining for some culture, hit up the Walker Art Center for contemporary works and the Mill City Museum , which is built into the ruins of what was once the world’s largest flour mill, to take in exhibits by local and regional artists.

The funky college town that produced bands like R.E.M. and the B-52s has a personality all its own, which is evident in the quirky shops and restaurants of its Victorian downtown streets. The racks at Dynamite Clothing are a vintage lover’s dream, while midcentury furniture enthusiasts might prefer the digs at Starlite Showroom . If shopping isn’t your thing, grab brunch at Five & Ten , which consistently ranks among the South’s best restaurants, and features an innovative menu driven by sustainable ingredients (order the braised lamb hash with fingerling potatoes, fennel, tatsoi, maitake mushrooms and garlic). Your crash pad is the funky Graduate Athens , a onetime iron foundry with retro-fabulous décor, an outdoor pool, coffee shop, and a music venue that doubles as a restaurant. After checking in, catch a live act at Georgia Theater , an Athens institution, then end your evening with the locals at Normal Bar .

Top 10 Hippie Towns in California: Boho, Counter Culture and Cool

In 1967, San Francisco kicked off the hippie movement with the Summer of Love and our boho culture has been going strong ever since. This is your guide to the top 10 hippie towns in California. Use it to construct a series of weekend getaways and enjoy these counter culture, artsy and bohemian towns in California.

Hippie towns in California green vintage van

Top 10 Hippie Towns in California

Yes, we have a lot of hippie towns in California, but they aren’t part of a monolithic culture. Some are more artsy, some are more peace and love, some have a distinctly new age vibe while others have more of a surfer dude culture. And frankly, some of these town are still high from the 1960’s. So, use our delightfully colorful and completely subjective infographic to find the hippie, artsy town in California that’s right for you.

Bohemian hippie towns in California

The following list of hippie communities is ordered from north to south.

Mount Shasta California-volcano and misty lake

Mount Shasta

Venn diagram zone: Hard core new age.

In addition to being a cool mountain town with winter skiing and summer watersports, Mount Shasta is also the home to quite a variety of legendary beings. There are the ancient Lemurians, who are apparently living in a subterranean hidden city under the huge Mount Shasta volcano. There are the humanoid lizard people, who also live underground. Then of, course there are all of those UFO sightings, the most recent of which occurred in February of 2020. Also, Big Foot lives in this bohemian California town and they have a large wooden sculpture downtown to prove it.

You can learn more about all of these supernatural residents in this article , suffice to say that it’s no wonder that Mount Shasta has been a magnet for mystics, spiritual pilgrims and believers. Have a cozy stay at the McCloud Hotel .

Here are three bohemian things to that you can do in Mount Shasta:

  • Visit one of their six crystal stores and load up on some energy.
  • Visit the creepy abandoned Juniper Lodge Motel in nearby Macdoel.
  • Take a scenic drive to the three McCloud River waterfalls.

Eureka California art town street art festival

Venn diagram zone: Devoted to art.

Even before it became legal, growing pot was was Humboldt County’s primary cash crop. For some towns, the resulting culture entrenched paranoia and an aversion to outsiders. However, for Eureka, the result is a free-spirited artsy community. In 2017, this bohemian California town developed a strategic arts plan designed to foster a renaissance in the community. It includes a hippy, inclusive ethic that values “listening, sharing and supporting”. Stay right in old town in this lovely historic lilac Victorian .

Here are three ways that you can experience Eureka’s arts culture:

  • Check out their series of cool, painted utility boxes.
  • Visit during the Eureka Street Art festival (or at least check out the murals when you visit).
  • Visit the Morris Graves Museum of Art.

Check out this article on where to find the best California street art , which features Eureka and 9 other cities.

Stumptown brewery in Guerneville, California

Sonoma County and Guerneville

Venn diagram zone: Laid back surfer vibe with a locovore ethic and a whiff of smoke.

Narrowing down to just one California hippie town for Sonoma County is a tough call because the whole county has a boho vibe. You can experience the locovore food movement on the California Cheese Trail. Visit the nuclear-free zone in Sebastopol while checking out their Patrick Amiot Junk Art trail. Or tuck away to the tiny, but artsy Occidental, which is in the redwoods on the Bohemian Highway.

If you base yourself in Guerneville for a weekend getaway , you can also soak up some if its LGBTQ history and visit the local funky hot mulch spa. We also recommend visiting Stumptown Brewing for some pulled pork and an intense intellectual conversation about the pros and cons of different marijuana cultivation techniques. Stay right near town in the super-friendly self-catering Cottages on River Road (fire pit included!)

Here are three other things to do in the area:

  • Commune with nature by hiking in the Armstrong Woods State Park.
  • Commune with nature by taking a slow stroll down Somona county’s dog-friendly state park beaches.
  • Drink wine and feel good about it at some of Sonoma County’s organic and biodynamic wineries (like Benziger and Horse and Plow).

Read More : Get the full downlow on all CA parks with our complete California State Parks list (with map).

Marin County Bolinas Stinson Beach

Venn diagram zone: Peace, love, understanding with a great surf break.

Bolinas sits inconspicuously at the tip of the Point Reyes Seashore. It’s truly one of the original hippie towns in California. During the 70’s they had a lot of commune members, artists, writers and other alternative types living in Bolinas. A community moratorium in 1971 ensured no growth for this tiny hippie beach town of 1,600 people, so not changed much since then. If you are staying the night, check out this super cute wood cabin for rent in Bolinas.

If you want to find Bolinas, better Google map it, because the town also voted to remove all street signs leading down from Highway One.

If you do find it, here are three cool things to do there:

  • Go surfing.
  • Check out the Lady of Bolinas Shrine.
  • Chillax on Bolinas Beach.

Bolinas also makes our list of chill Northern California coastal towns . Check out the list for more weekend getaway ideas.

Hippy San Francisco summer of love mural

San Francisco

Venn diagram zone: Peace, love and public nudity.

San Francisco is the most hippy town in California, nay all of the United States. In 1967, San Francisco’s Summer of Love kicked off the hippie movement and its counter culture ethic was a psychedelic swirl of protests, free love, flower power, mind-altering drug trips and the maturation of rock & roll as a major art form. The corner of Haight and Ashbury streets were ground zero for all of that.

Like elsewhere in San Francisco, there has been some gentrification since 1967. However, the neighborhood has retained its hippie flair and there are still plenty of groovy things to do in Haight Ashbury. Here are three ideas for you:

  • The Land of the Sun store has tie-died garb, incense, Grateful Dead merch, Bob Marley posters and bongs.
  • Check out the Grateful Dead house on Ashbury at Waller. It’s a private residence and you can’t go into it. But stand out front, pop in your ear buds, play some Dead and imagine yourself on the street in 1967.
  • Take a San Francisco Love tour in a vintage VW van.

You should also check out this article on unusual things to do in San Francisco , all of these activities have been vetted by locals. Stay in the heart of the Haight in the Stanyan Hotel .

Santa Cruz beach lifeguard

Venn diagram zone: Tree hugger and laid back surfer vibe.

Some of SF’s Summer of Love rolled south to Santa Cruz. The city established itself as a beach resort town in the early 19th century. However it was the opening of the University of California/Santa Cruz campus in 1965, that cemented the city’s reputation as a prime surfer hangout and hippie town in California. The 70’s also brought an environmental movement that helped to pave the way for the establishment of notable state parks and reserves.

Santa Cruz is now a cultural mash-up of surfer dudes, university students, laid back nature-lovers and left-leaning hippies. Discover it for yourself with this weekend getaway in Santa Cruz . Look into renting an amazing Santa Cruz tree house or beach house for your stay there.

Here are three ideas for things to do in Santa Cruz:

  • Watch the sunset at Natural Bridges State park.
  • Commune with the redwood trees in Nisene Marks State Park.
  • Shop local at Bookshop Santa Cruz.

Harmony California sign and cow sculpture

Venn diagram zone: Tenacious artsy town with the smell of salt in the air.

This town’s name alone qualifies it as an artsy town in California– but there’s more to the story than that. Harmony got its start as a dairy region in 1869 and was prosperous until the dairy was shut down in 1955. There was a resurgence in the 1970’s when counter-culture types moved in seeking a slower pace of life and a place to practice traditional crafts.

The whole town was sold in 2014, but it still houses a small population of artisans making and selling art objects, locally hand blown glass, and pottery. They also have some hilarious cow sculptures, with are worth seeing. You can also book a local stay in this cute historic red cottage .

Check out our full guide to the history of Harmony (and how to visit). Just to temp you, here are a few things to do there:

  • Visit the glass blowing works and pottery store.
  • Go wine tasting at Harmony cellars.
  • Add Harmony to a weekend getaway in Cayucos and explore more of the Central Coast.

Ojai hippie town California straw bag

Venn diagram zone: Upscale new age with a boutique addiction.

Ojai is frequently described as a nouveau hippie California town. New age believers are convinced that there is a vortex ley line running through the valley. In 1922, celebrity mystic Jiddu Krishnamurti had an epiphany in Ojai and as a result, famous seekers like Charlie Chaplin and Greta Garbo visited and helped to put it on the map. Since Ojai is only 90 miles from LA, you’ll still find Hollywood gliterati hanging out there for day trips.

Ojai is a small town, but they’ve made room for six spas (including one gives you a Native American narrative during your treatment), herb walks, meditation centers and a metaphysical research library. They also have an adorable, historic downtown center with tons of boutiques featuring artisans, home goods and clothing. Stay at the Ojai Ranch Inn and you’ll be steps from the Ojai trail.

Here are three things to do in Ojai:

  • Gallery and boutique stroll on Ojai Avenue.
  • Take the Friends Ranches farm tour.
  • Take a hike on the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy.

Joshua Tree town Noah Purifoy museum

Joshua Tree

Venn diagram zone: Hard core artsy California town with a strong sense of humor.

Joshua Tree town isn’t just the gateway for visiting Joshua Tree national park , it’s also a very cool artsy town in its own right. The arts culture started with the arrival of mid-century artists who came to the region looking for desert landscapes. A gallery scene arose in 29 Palms during the 1960s. Over the next few decades, galleries and studios spread along the highway 62 corridor.

Today, there are a lot of quirky sculpture gardens, arcane museums and cool art galleries to explore. And if you like your tourism with an intergalactic flair, there is also a UFO landing site and a prisoner of war cabin from an alternative dimension. Here’s what to do there:

  • Start with this list of cool things to do in Joshua Tree , specifically designed for extraterrestrials, culture vultures and weirdos (like me).
  • Tour the Keys Ranch inside the National Park. You’ll get park history with stories regaling the area’s murderous miners.
  • Envelop yourself in kitsch by renting a historic Joshua Tree cabin or a glamping trailer .

Slab City guard gates mural

Venn diagram zone: Live and let live, get high for breakfast and make some art out of found objects.

Slab City is an off-the-grid squatter camp for retirees, disaffected Millennials and general drop-outs. It’s not quite hippie culture, but it’s certainly counter-culture. Some of the full-time residents are living out a creative experiment in how to live and grow food in this extreme desert. Seasonal residents are simply looking for a place to live cheaply away from the trappings of suburban life.

But there is a very creative vibe in Slab City with two music venues, a sculpture garden and a touching artistic monument celebrating one man’s passion for the God. Check out this article, which will give you background and things to do in Slab City . You can also stay on-site at Spyder’s Ponderosa camp .

Here are a few highlights:

  • Salvation Mountain was a passion project created by Leonard Knight, who celebrated his religious fervor by creating a massive colorful monument on the landscape.
  • East Jesus is a sculpture garden full of oddments made of found objects. It’s very Burning Man. Check out our article on the East Jesus artist collective before visiting.
  • Visit the Slab City Library, a free library run by volunteers.

You guys left out the redwoods state park. You can’t get anymore laid back than a trip to them. I live near Garberville which is a total hippie town and has been since the 60’s and before. Love it here. Hope next time you include us. Thanks

Out a site.

Right on, man!

Thanks for the suggestion!

You left out Monterey.. I was there in the late 60’s. Laid back, cool jazz festival, Use to party there many a weekend.

Good suggestion. Thanks for that.

I am looking to retire in a dead head hippie type town in northern CA, I live in Venice for too many years.

Thanks for your California road ideas. So much to see and do in Cali! We loved our two week road trip through California in the summer of 2017 and just today, my daughter said it was time to go back.

I wish big sur was still a hippie town I don’t know what it is now !

“Big Sewer” is now a bigger tourist trap than ever before.

How is Arcata not on this list?

Hey you forgot Grass Valley! A bey chill town in the Sierra foothills😊

Of late it’s been reduced to a parody of itself.

The residents are mostly hippie wannabes and their mindset is so decidedly late 60’s that they eschew so many modern conveniences and they come across as Flower Power Mormons.

San Francisco did not “kick off the hippie movement in 1967,” it began rather quietly at the end of the summer of 1965, and the first so-called “head shop” opened on Haight Street (called the “Psychedelic Shop”) in early January of 1966. At the end of January of 1966, a precursor to the January 1967 “Gathering of the Tribes” was held at the San Francisco Longshoremen’s Hall dubbed the “Trips Festival.”

What about Topanga???

2. negril, jamaica, 3. glastonbury, england, 4. cape maclear, malawi, 5. kathmandu, nepal, 6. dahab, egypt, 7. panajachel, guatemala, 8. ko pha ngan, thailand, 9. siargao, philippines, 10. dali, china, 11. eugene, oregon, usa, 12. jericoacoara, brazil, 13. the cyclades, greece, 14. lamu, kenya, 15. california, usa, 16. christiania, copenhagen, denmark, 17. byron bay, australia, 18. chefchaouen, morocco, 19. istanbul, turkey, 20. gili islands, indonesia.

It may be known as a party hotspot today, but Goa used to be firmly off the beaten track. The relaxed local culture, delicious cuisine and endless white-sand beaches have always attracted chilled-out travellers in need of a break, with an optional side of spiritual exploration.

Whether or not you’re interested in the nightlife, luckily there’s still much of the old, laidback Goa in evidence for the independent-minded traveller today.

This gorgeous beach may be over-developed in some places now, but it goes on for so indulgently long (it’s around four miles end to end) that you only need to wander a bit further to find yourself some peace and quiet.

If you’re feeling particularly active you can join in the water sports on offer, but you may find your schedule is soon pretty packed with sunbathing, walking and, if you're that way inclined, some meditating on this gorgeous beach in Jamaica .

Hear Glastonbury and you think of the festival. Of course, anyone can find their inner happy hippy at this world-famous music and arts festival, especially over in the Green Fields, but this is a year-round destination.

It’s at the heart of the "Isle of Avalon", an area rich in myths and Arthurian legends which attracts Pagans, Wiccans and all manner of New-Agers. Head up to Glastonbury Tor for ley-lines and gorgeous views, or wander along the hippy-tastic High Street.

Diving, kayaking, walking, snorkelling... there’s plenty to do in Cape Maclear, but you may be content just lazing lakeside in a hammock, drinking in the stunning view of Africa ’s third-largest, second-deepest lake. The area’s stayed pretty rustic despite its popularity with backpackers from around the world, and it’s a truly chilled, calm place to while away some time.

Nepal has had many troubles to contend with, not least the 2015 earthquake, but it’s always attracted spiritually curious travellers and probably always will. After all, there’s nowhere in the world quite like it – a truly awe-inspiring natural setting with a view across the Himalayas, a city full of treasures with a kind and welcoming population, and a key site in both Buddhism and Hindusim.

It’s also the perfect base for continuing your spiritual exploration, with treks to Pokhara and onwards to the Himalayas.

Diving in the clear waters of the Gulf of Aqaba; sharing shisha with friends in the evening; sleeping under the stars in Bedouin tents… The laidback pace of life makes Dahab a great place to sit back, relax and enjoy your environment.

Though unrest in the region has resulted in fewer visitors in recent years, there’s little doubt they’ll find their way back soon enough to Egypt .

During the sixties the lakeside Guatemalan town of Panajachel was so popular with itinerant hippies (mostly wandering down the continent from the USA ) that it became known as ‘Gringotenango’.

As the civil war intensified visitor numbers dropped, but from the mid-nineties travellers started coming back in search of relaxation, stunning views of Lago de Atitlán and… well, what else do you need?

Just above Ko Samui in the Gulf of Thailand is this small island, a classic stop on the Hippy Trail. Somewhere between 1983 and 1993 (no one seems sure of the exact date, or particularly bothered) a few travellers started playing music on the beach during the full moon, and year on year the event grew and attracted more visitors. The rest (hard partying, day-glo, chemically-enhanced) is history and Ko Pha Ngan is now one of Thailand 's most visited islands.

For real seclusion, head to Siargao Island in the Philippines . If it’s peace and quiet that you’re after, though, maybe avoid September – the island became famous after word spread among the world’s surfers that there’s a break so good they called it "Cloud 9", and the Siargao Cup global surfing competition is now held there annually.

For the rest of the year it’s sedate and beautiful, a perfect place to find some zen.

A low-key city by Erhai Lake, Dali has long been a popular stop for backpackers and hippies. It’s still not overwhelmed by tourism, despite its gorgeous surroundings and intriguing traditional architecture (the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple are a well-known symbol of the city), which means it’s still a great place to find a bit of calm.

Where Portland is hipster, Eugene is resolutely hippy. It’s the place to go for all your tie-dyeing needs, not to mention New Age philosophy, communal living and herbal remedies. There’s a lot to attract any type of traveller, but to get the most out of the city’s gorgeous natural setting and strong artistic community you should absolutely embrace your inner hippy.

Known for its dazzlingly white beach and impressive sand dunes, Brazil ’s beautiful Jericoacoara has been pulling in hippies and surfers for years. It’s a great spot for windsurfing, as well, and of course for walking, sunbathing and any other chilled-out beach activity you can think of.

It’s also a national park, so it’s reasonably safe from development for now.

Mykonos has always been a traditional stop on the Hippy Trail, but today is perhaps a bit overdeveloped and party-focused for some tastes. Luckily, there are other destinations in this group of gorgeous Greek islands .

Keep going to Andros, for instance, and you’ll find peace, quiet and stunning walks. If you’re really after isolation, though, aim for Anafi. It’s the last ferry stop, and the perfect place for some reflection and relaxation.

The small island of Lamu in Kenya has long been a prime spot for hippy travellers, and though there have been security concerns recently, it’s not hard to see the attraction. There’s not much to do other than take in the gorgeous medieval town, take leisurely dhow rides to nearby islands, and just chill out, man...

California is in many ways the perfect place to find your hippy self. The most hardcore of hippies can chill out in accepting, alternative San Francisco ; those who still love a bit of luxury can head to LA to dabble in meditation and organic green juices; literary hippies can go all Dharma Bums and scale the Matterhorn; and anyone at all can find a bit of inner peace wandering the stunning Yosemite National Park .

Copenhagen is a pretty perfect city for hippy-minded individuals: great cycling, lots of greenery, good food and a thriving music scene. If you really want to get into the hippy lifestyle, though, you need to head to Christiania .

This colourful city-within-a-city has been a commune since 1971, and is showing no signs of slowing down. It’s autonomous and self-governing, to an extent, and a fascinating place to see a long-term social experiment in action.

Byron Bay means one thing: surfing. It’s famous for its long, sandy beach and a local life so laidback it’s almost horizontal. If you feel like even this New Agey, chilled out surfer town isn’t quite hippy enough for you, head to nearby Nimbin for colourful murals, dreadlocks and tie-dye galore.

Nimbin also happens to be known as the marijuana capital of Australia, even holding a "Mardi Grass" festival in May.

Morocco has long been known as a destination for travellers who want to get off the beaten track. Marrakesh and Fez are the obvious places to go, but the travelling hippies of the world have long-preferred Chefchaouen . It’s cheap, cheerful and full of open-air markets and beautiful pale blue buildings. What’s not to like?

The only city in the world to sit on two continents, Istanbul has long intrigued and enticed independent travellers. The "gateway to Asia" was a key point on the Hippy Trail of the sixties, a fork in the road from where some would head back into Europe and others would look onwards to India , Thailand and Vietnam . Today it retains its independent vibe, attracting hippies, hedonists, artists and romantics from all around the world.

These secluded islands off Lombok in Indonesia are pretty perfect if you want to get away from it all. Backpackers and hippies started heading there in the seventies and eighties, and now the islands are an established destination.

They’re perfect for diving, lounging on the beach, and simply doing nothing at all.

The Most Hippie Town in Missouri is Really Far Out, Man

More and more I'm hearing this word used to describe a lifestyle that hasn't been used in nearly 50 years. It's the word "hippie" and there's one part of Missouri that is considered the most "hippie" place in the state and it really is far out - literally.

100.9 The Eagle, The Tri-States' Classic Rock Station logo

I was amused when I saw that Thrillist has shared their new 2023 version of the best hippie towns in each state . So what exactly is a hippie these days? According to Thrillist , "they range from free spirits on college campuses to mountain-dwelling stoners, boomers still living in the '60s, and boomers-turned-yuppies who buy expensive art".

Fair enough, but what Missouri town best represents that famous hippie lifestyle?

According to their list, it's Tecumseh which is the home of East Wind Community which was born during the hippie revolution in 1973.

Here's the mission statement of East Wind Community directly from their official website:

Ultimately, we seek to maintain and continually improve this decades strong, living example of what can happen when people see that working together for a common purpose makes life easier and more fulfilling.

It's worth mentioning that this isn't a community you can just barge into. They offer what they describe as a "path to membership" on their website . You can tell that this is a tight community of people who don't want someone from the outside coming in and messing up their vibe and who can blame them?

The hippie lifestyle has become a hot topic thanks in part to a recent movie starring Kelsey Grammer of Frasier fame that highlighted this movement in the late 1960's and early 1970's.

Perhaps this outlook on life will make a comeback? Anything is possible.

Top 9 Best Hippie Towns In California

Ossiana Tepfenhart

California is the state that everyone associates with hippies, and rightfully so. The Summer of Love happened in California. Hippie culture started here.

It also happens to be one of the most relaxed and festival-friendly states in the Union. Unsurprisingly, there are still a lot of hippie towns that dot the California scenery. If you’re looking to call a hippie place home, then you should check out this article.

If you want to get a taste of hippie culture, hitting up any of these whimsical hippie places will do the trick:

  • San Francisco
  • Mount Shasta
  • Guerneville

Moving to a legit hippie town in California is not going to be something you should do lightly. We decided to take a look at the most hippie-friendly towns in the state. And, while California has some awesome hippie towns, we also wrote a guide about hippie towns in Oregon !

Figuring Out Which City In California Is Most Beatnik

We had to figure out what makes a hippy in order to evaluate the greatest cities for hippies in California. We threw a lot of parameters at this one in the hopes of getting the best, most comprehensive results.

This is the criteria we utilized, which we derived from the Google Places API, the Census Bureau’s 2010-2014 American Community Survey, and voter registration data:

  • Per capita number of organic markets
  • Yoga studios per capita
  • Per capita, the number of secondhand stores is
  • Per capita, the number of vegan eateries is increasing.
  • Per capita, the number of pet adoption centers is
  • The liberal voting population in each city

To obtain accurate data, we counted places within a 4.5-mile radius of a city’s core. The average city in America is about 18 square miles in size.

Studying The Figures

All of these figures are expressed per population, which relates to the number of stores per person in a certain city. The study was likewise confined to non-CDPs with populations of above 5,000 people.

We then averaged the rankings for each location to create a hippie index. Finally, the city with the highest hippy index was voted the ‘Best City for Hippies in California.’ We’re talking about you, Piedmont.

The Best Hippie Towns In California

Now that we’ve gone over that, let’s talk about the most hippie-friendly towns in California.

1. San Francisco

San Francisco is where the hippie movement all started, and where there is a place called “Hippie Hill.”

While most people now associate this city with sky-high rents and pretentious tech people, the truth is that it still has some serious hippie vibes from time to time. There are tons of yoga studios, spiritual retreats, and music venues that are all about the hippie vibe.

Besides, you occasionally can see people driving around hippie busses from time to time. It doesn’t get much more hippie than that.

2. Santa Cruz

top 9 best hippie towns in california

According to the most recent studies , Santa Cruz has a more hippie-friendly ambiance than San Francisco or any other city in the Cali area. The reasons why include more affordable housing, a bustling art community, tons of music, as well as gorgeous vegan eateries that focus on sustainable eating.

When you’re not maxin’ and relaxin’ on the beach, you can expect to hear drum circles and other hippie meetups in the distance. It’s that kind of town, and that’s why people love it.

3. Mount Shasta

Most people know of Mount Shasta from the gorgeous photos that come from people who tour the national park by the same name. However, people forget that Mount Shasta isn’t just a hotspot for hiking and biking.

According to people who live there, the mountain is a major paranormal hotspot that enhances peoples’ spirituality.

The local town is well-aware of the strange and mystical energy that the area is famous for. It bleeds into just about every aspect of life here. If you’re a new-age type of hippie, then you will find this place to be a great area to visit.

via Visit California

This place is known as Hippie Haven, and it’s not a mild honorific, either. If you take a quick look at the area’s headlines, you’re going to see a lot of headlines involving hippies.

There are vegan restaurants, plenty of cool places to go thrifting, and loads of ways to enjoy the art scene.

An ideal place for a crunchy creative, it’s hard to ignore the draw that this town would have to a typical hippie.

5. Guerneville

top 9 best hippie towns in california

For every crazy, extra-crispy crunchy hippie you meet in California, there’s going to be the older type of hippie that will want to have the finer things in life. That’s the type of hippy that Guerneville tends to attract.

This SoCal, Sonoma Valley town is known for its heavy emphasis on the locavore scene—especially when it comes to wine and freshly made cheese.

A major spa hotspot, Guerneville is a little quirky with its ways of getting people to chill out in nature. For example, one of their local spas is famous for a hot mulch bath.

Another major hippie perk that you’ll find here? This region’s pretty popular with the Green Boom, so you can rest assured that you will have a good smoking sesh here.

top 9 best hippie towns in california

Though it’s not as “in your face” as the flower children of San Francisco, there are a lot of ways to do the hippie thing. One of the oldest tropes that are still tied to the hippie movement is the surfer movement.

This is exactly the type of vibe that Bolinas tends to work best with. Bolinas is a surfer city, but it still hosts a lot of hippie-friendly venues, too.

There’s tons of fun to be had in all this surf and sand. If you want to hippie out, get into a guitar circle or smoke a joint. Such is the idyllic, artsy life that comes with living near Bolinas.

Harmony is a hippie village, no matter how you slice or dice it. The entire town is named after a hippie vibe, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

This is the type of hippie village that most of the older crowd retired to, and that’s not a bad thing. The area is a veritable wonderland of art projects.

If you’re an artist and want to get a breath of fresh air, you’ll want to head to Harmony. It’s an amazing place to be.

8. Slab City

Slab City is not exactly a town. It doesn’t exist on an official basis. This is a shantytown that was made by a bunch of homeless families, some artists, and maybe one or two people who had enough of the rat race.

So, it’s more of a commune than anything else. Like most of the communes of yore, there’s not much of a concept when it comes to ownership.

In Slab City, there are not many rules of law. There are also not many constraints when it comes to the overall scope of what you’re allowed to do.

You can make art, sell stuff, or just do you. Because it’s such a loose interpretation of a town, we have to admit that it’s a pretty hippie way to live.

top 9 best hippie towns in california

Ojai, in a lot of ways, is the opposite of what Slab City tends to be. This is a new age hotspot that has a deep love of all things spiritual and mystical. Tarot cards? Yep. Crystals? Oh, you betcha. Burning sage to clear out the bad vibes of a place? Oh, it’s practically a must for anyone who lives here.

The thing about Ojai is that most of the people here live, breathe, and shop by the concept of boutiques. There’s a boutique shop for everything here, but most of them tend to focus on sustainable items.

Needless to say, it’s a lot more structured than Slab City. However that spacey vibe that people adore about hippies is still alive and well here.

What Makes A Place A Hippie Town?

The best way to explain hippie is that you’ll know it when you see it. Hippies are a little bit mystical, a lotta bit musical, and tend to go for “crunchy” living.

If it’s a vegan hotspot, you get even more points. Places that have a history of hippie culture and lore will want to get the most of their rankings, too.

There is no “one way” to be a hippie. I’m a hippie, but I can’t always stand other hippies. Get what I mean? Don’t hate on me for the choices I made.

They tend to be rather egalitarian, but that doesn’t mean they’re for everyone. Most people are pretty shocked to find out how rigid the social structure tends to be around these communities. While communes may seem pretty lax at first, it’s important to remember that they need rules to be halfway decent and sustainable. So, it’s not free for all everyone tends to think it is.

Why did most hippie communes in California fail?

It wasn’t the issue of having social structures fall apart. Rather, public records show that most hippie communes tended to fail as a result of poor money handling as well as an overburdened structure. Many didn’t even make a product to sell, just so that they could pay the taxes on the land they bought. Had they been better funded and better managed, we would likely be seeing a lot more communes today.

30 Hippie Hideouts Across the Globe

From communes to places where weed is legal, the echoes of hippies past affect the culture of today. Here are 30 places to grok the counterculture, wherever you may be!

Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco

Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco

This is widely considered to be the birthplace of the hippie culture. San Francisco still feels these cultural effects today, both in its political outlook and in landmarks like The Strand Bookstore.

Kathmandu, Nepal

Kathmandu, Nepal

Nepal is a favored destination of people seeking a different perspective, a new philosophy, or a change in way of life. As such, it was the epicenter of the Hippie Trail in the ‘70s. Today, you can still find hippies wandering around the “Old Freak Street” square.

Nimbin, Australia

Nimbin, Australia

Nimbin has long been a hippie destination. Although, in recent years, it has become more of a vacation/party destination. But, there’s still Mullumbimby, Channon, Belgrave, and a lot of other towns in the area. If you’re looking for a hippie haven, you’ll definitely find one near Nimbin, if not in Nimbin itself.

Goa, India

With their imaginations fueled by The Beatles’ now-legendary trip to Rishikesh, hippies descended on Goa in numbers strong enough that their presence is still felt on the culture. Today, there are vestiges of what drew them here and enclaves of them in certain parts of town.

Zipolite, Mexico

Zipolite, Mexico

Hippies first descended on Zipolite in the 1960s, but instead of disbanding over the years, they’ve imbued the city with an even stronger sense of eclecticism. Between the marijuana scene and the nude beaches, this laid-back, small town remains free from crowds of visitors.

Nelson, Canada

Nelson, Canada

Nelson has a long countercultural history, from a wave of Russian pacifists in 1908 to draft dodgers in the Vietnam War years. Today, the town retains its status as a countercultural icon, aided by the marijuana, the laid-back attitude, and the phenomenal ski resort nearby.

Orgiva, Spain

Orgiva, Spain

Orgiva is the perfect place to begin exploring the three hippie communities nearby. El Morreon is home to a lot of younger people living in harmony (and buses). Los Cigarrones traditionally holds an annual Dragon Festival, but Beneficio is the most famous. It’s a captivating, commune-esque agricultural community that draws a horde of curious travelers.

Hebden Bridge, UK

Hebden Bridge, UK

Hebden Bridge is a mill town that started faltering in the 60s, until a massive influx of hippies revitalized it. It’s a relatively-rural hub for creative professionals, the “lesbian capital of the U.K,” and the “4th funkiest town in the U.K.” This small, liberal enclave is a haven for those still hoping to live by hippie ideals!

Ruigoord, Netherlands

Ruigoord, Netherlands

In the 60s, Amsterdam evacuated this village with the intent of extending the harbor out to it. When the plans stalled, a group of artists wandered in and started squatting here. Over time, it became a formal village built on the principals of the hippies who “founded” it.

Christiana, Denmark

Christiana, Denmark

In 1971, a bunch of hippies started squatting on an old military installation and declared themselves to be an autonomous community. Denmark has just sort of rolled with it for the most part. However, residents did recently destroy the open cannabis market after a shooting in late August 2016, but the drug market will probably come back at some point.

Glastonbury, England

Glastonbury, England

Glastonbury is perhaps most famous for the Glastonbury Music Festival, which dates back to 1970 when it was founded and funded by upper-class hippies Andrew Kerr and Arabella Churchill as the Pilton Pop, Blues, and Folk Festival. There’s still a strong vein of New Age and Neopagan culture running through this city today!

Metelkova, Slovenia

Metelkova, Slovenia

A group of activists squatted on a disused military barracks in 1993 and declared the area an “autonomous social center.” While the area is autonomous and extremely liberal, it’s also well-regulated by its residents. The current mayor of Ljubljana is supportive of the community, calling it “a center of urban culture” and “a place for critical thinking [and] civic engagement...”

Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville, North Carolina

The ideal hippie lifestyle looks a lot like old-timey America: small farms producing food for their own communities, goods and services made and sold locally, and small towns where everybody says “hello” to their neighbor. It may make some cultural sense, then, that Asheville, North Carolina has emerged as one of the U.S.’s top hippie enclaves.

Gokarna, India

Gokarna, India

Gokarna is located on the Western coast of India, and it’s often regarded as a more laid-back, less-commercialized version of Goa. In other words, it’s the place that hippies want to be going when they end up in Goa. Plus, it has a beautiful beach.

Dahab, Egypt

Dahab, Egypt

Dahab is a Bedouin village on the coast of the Sinai Peninsula. It used to be a fishing village, but it’s now known as a premiere diving location. It’s also known for being more laid back and much cheaper than the rest of Egypt. It’s been a hippie draw since the ‘70s, and that vibe lives on today in the pace and quality of life.

Eugene, Oregon

Eugene, Oregon

For some people, the entire Pacific Northwest probably feels like a hippie hideout, but Eugene, Oregon is where all the real hippies like to hang. From co-ops to organic farming, this mid-size city is perfect for those who want to march to beat of their own drum.

Ibiza, Spain

Ibiza, Spain

In the hippie heyday of the 60s, Ibiza was the place to be. It was a hotspot for creative types of all sorts, and that legacy continues to this day. While Ibiza may be a bit more mainstream then it was back then, hippies should still feel right at home when visiting.

El Bolson, Argentina

El Bolson, Argentina

Hippies have been heading to El Bolson, Argentina since at least the 70s, and there’s no sign that this trend is stopping. Like many of the places on this list, the beautiful, natural views and plenty of farming opportunities is what keeps the hippies coming.

Panajachel, Guatemala

Panajachel, Guatemala

Panajachel is the perfect place for hippies looking to soak up a little sun by the water. This beautiful town is situated on Lake Atitlan in Guatemala, and is also full of fun and unique marketplaces to explore for all kinds of hippie wares.

Burlington, Vermont

Burlington, Vermont

Is it any surprise that the town Ben and Jerry (of ice cream fame) call home is a hippie hideout? This place is so all-in on the culture, that you’ve got to travel to nearby South Burlington to find a McDonalds.

Tulum, Mexico

Tulum, Mexico

White sand beaches, gorgeous views, marketplace shopping--what’s not to love about the hippie paradise of Tulum, Mexico? While it’s still off-the-radar for many travelers, hippies have been heading to this hidden gem of a city for years.

Boulder, Colorado

Boulder, Colorado

Since the legalization of recreational marijuana, the whole state of Colorado feels like it’s been taken by the hippies, but Boulder is still the central hub for hippie activity. And thanks to the high number of college students living in town for their studies, there is no shortage of creative, unusual activities for the wandering hippie to get into.

Vancouver, Canada

Vancouver, Canada

While we might associate hippies more with tropical climates, there are plenty in chillier locales, as well--like Vancouver, Canada. Folks have been flocking to this Canadian town since the Summer of Love, and while things may have died down a bit, there’s still plenty of fun for a modern-day hippie to find here.

Chefchaouen, Morocco

Chefchaouen, Morocco

A visit to Chefchaouen will have you feeling blue--but in the best way possible. Many of the city’s historic buildings are painted in beautiful blue shades that are bound to pique the interest of any self-respecting hippie. It probably doesn’t hurt that hash isn’t in short supply here, either.

Ithaca, New York

Ithaca, New York

Ithaca may be home to the prestigious Cornell University, but that doesn’t mean everyone in the town is that straight-laced. From farmers markets to art collectives to music festivals and more, there’s more than enough fun to be had for hippies at heart.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Sure, we can talk about the beauty of Amsterdam. The history. The culture. But there’s one reason and one reason only why hippies flock to the city, and we all know what it is: the legal drugs.

Olympia, Washington

Olympia, Washington

Although it may be a town of over 50,000, Olympia is a great place to experience the great outdoors. Nestled near the beautiful Mount Rainier, this breathtaking spot is perfect for hippies who are looking to commune with Mother Nature.

Negril, Jamaica

Negril, Jamaica

Negril is a tropical paradise in Jamaica that makes a beautiful destination for hippies and non-hippies alike. If you’re looking to live like Bob Marley for a week, this is the place to go.

Bisbee, Arizona

Bisbee, Arizona

Boca Raton, Florida may be the go-to spot for retirees, but hippies know that Bisbee, Arizona is secretly the best place to live out your twilight years. From the unique architecture to the quirky residents, this is a must-visit spot for folks who march to the beat of their own drum.

Kasol, India

Kasol, India

There’s not a better place to get back to nature than Kasol, India. This small hamlet in the north of the country sits in the Himalayas mountains and has no shortage of breathtaking views for visitors. It’s no surprise this tranquil place has become a hippie hotspot.

Is this love-is this love-is this love that I'm feeling?

Bob Marley was probably referring to a hippie when he sang this song.

The Hippie movement that began in the 1960s has become more than just that. Its a lifestyle, its hope and it's now almost a religion. Non-conformism is their motto and peace is their means towards a better world. Hippies are arguably the happiest people in the world. And not just because of the marijuana and the music.

11 Hippie Destinations Around The World

It was in the 1960s that the hippie culture made its way into the world. It was all about free souls who wandered around the world without any worldly attachments. And let us say, what an amazing thought and lifestyle it must be! Slowly and steadily, one wanderer met another, gradually forming a group that marked the beginnings of a new revolutionary era, The Hippie Revolution. It might have started in Africa, but hippie destinations sprung up in several parts of the world, including Spain, India, and many more countries. That’s how the hippie culture still exists and is so prevalent around the world, and that too in large numbers.

The 60s might be long gone, but the hippie culture has stuck around and still holds the same allure as it did back then. In fact, it’s nothing less than a religion, especially since this is the woke-as-hell 21st century. Do you want to embrace your inner hippie and go on a hippie hiatus? Here are the 11 most exciting and intriguing hippie destinations around the world, including some famous ones in India!

Table of contents

Chefchaouen, morocco, ibiza, spain, istanbul, turkey, negril, jamaica, eugene, oregon, dahab, egypt, cape maclear, malawi, auroville, india, ko pha ngan, thailand.

We begin this list of hippie destinations with a city in Africa, where the hippie movement is said to have originated. Behold Chefchaouen in northern Morocco , which could very well be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Chefchaouen is Morocco’s Blue City ; literally, the entire city is painted in different hues of blue – walls, doors, windows, et al! Later on, it gradually welcomed Jews and Christian converts as well. It’s no wonder it’s one of the Most Colorful Places On Earth .

Founded way back in 1471, the city’s origins were of a small Moorish fortress that saw exiled refugees from Spain . Today, it’s cheap, has a carefree spirit, and is full of open-air markets selling Boho stuff and handicraft products. Ding ding ding! Basically, it ticks all the boxes for being the perfect hippie destination, with the additional perk of not selling or hyping itself. Plus, you get to do nothing all day long happily! That sounds just perfect.

We can have no list of hippie destinations without including one of the OG hippie destinations in India, Goa. Goa might be a party hotspot today, but when it began its meteoric rise as a hippie destination, it was firmly off-the-beaten-path. The gorgeous sandy beaches, delectable seafood cuisine, and relaxed local culture with Portuguese influences, with the addition of delicious local alcohol, are what attracted chilled-out travelers. Even if you aren’t interested in nightlife, there are lots of Things To Do In Goa for the independent-minded traveler even today. Discovering Goa’s rich architectural past, especially its UNESCO-listed churches and the city of Old Goa, is one of the best things to do on Goa’s hippie trail today.

No list of hippie destinations in the world is complete without mentioning the king of them all, the party-central and psychedelic Ibiza . Part of Spain’s Balearic Islands in the Balearic Sea, Ibiza is a lot more than just partying and EDM music. Back in the ’60s, when the culture was just evolving, Ibiza was where raves began and is the go-to spot for all European hippies. Not only does it have lounges and clubs, but it also has wonderful shopping places and marketplaces. But, some say Ibiza’s bohemian culture goes back to the 1930s when Avante-Garde European artists who fled authoritarian regimes found peace and unleashed their creativity on this island. In fact, Ibiza of the 1960s is where adlib fashion was born. Today, the island is famous for its flea markets that sell everything from fashion, original costume jewelry, pottery, handicrafts, and even exotic musical instruments. Rad!

Byzantium to Constantinople to Istanbul , the world’s only city to sit on two continents, has long entranced and intrigued world travelers. The “Gateway to Asia” was one of the most important points on the original overland Hippie Trail that traversed Asia and Europe. Between the ’50s and the 70s, Istanbul in Turkey radiated an independent vibe, attracting romantics, artists, hedonists, and of course, hippies from all around the world. In fact, Istanbul was the fork in the road, from where the road split into the northern and southern routes through Asia. In fact, the melting pot of a Turkish city had, and even today has gathering spots for hippies, such as Yener’s Café and The Pudding Shop. Pilgrims driving Volkswagen vans or old cars would stop here to swap stories and share expenses with other travelers.

Negril, Jamaica, is one of the most localized hippie destinations in the world. After all, it’s a beach – and a long, long one at that! Also known as the Seven Mile Beach, it’s one of the Top Things To Do In Jamaica and is the original Jamaican hippie paradise. In fact, there was no main road connecting the then-rural backwater Negril to the rest of Jamaica until the 1970s there was. So, many adventurous travelers would arrive by local ferry, drop out, and get high. Some of these early pioneers even included Vietnam war vets who were looking for a permanent escape from the crazy world they’d left behind.

Slowly, bars, hotels, and guesthouses sprang up, and a road was built, cementing this place on the global hippie trail. If you find it over-commercialized in some places, walk along the beach. You’ll certainly find a spot where you can find some peace and quiet.

It might sound surprising, but the little town of Eugene in the heart of Oregon is one of the happiest and happiest towns in America. Neighboring Portland might be hipster, but Eugene is an out-and-out hippie! It’s the place to go for all your tie-dyeing requirements, not to mention herbal remedies and New Age philosophy. People here take out-of-the-box ideas of living seriously with eastern healing and communal living. What’s more, the city is home to a strong artistic community, whom you’ll hear talking about healing crystals and philosophy at the local dive bar. If that wasn’t enough, the city’s stunning natural setting is the perfect backdrop for embracing your inner hippie.

One of the most gorgeous hippie destinations is also one of the Breathtaking Places You Must See In Egypt , Dahab. The laidback resort town overlooks the clear waters of the Gulf of Aqaba. One of the top things to do here is diving in the clear waters all day long. Later on, you can share sheesha with your new friends and sleep under the stars in Bedouin tents. This makes Dahab the perfect place to sit back, unwind, and experience the hippie way of life. The golden sandy beaches boast incredible views of the Gulf of Aqaba, all the way to the Hijaz Mountains. What’s more, Dahab is one of the best places to snorkel and scuba dive. For, there are gorgeous marine life and corals right underneath the surface of the water.

When we mention hippie destinations in India, only one place comes to mind – Kasol! Located along the Parvati River, Kasol is like a slice of Israel in India. In fact, you’ll see fluttering Hebrew banners all along the river. The picturesque town has become a hub for backpackers and hikers who’re hiking Yanker, Sar, and Parbati Passes or Kheerganga. This hippie haven has many cafes where you’ll see backpackers and fellow hippies chilling out. These include Buddha Place, Jim Morrison Cafe, Freedom Cafe on the river, and Shiva Shanti Cafe, which is yet another hippie favorite. What’s more, you’ll even see small groups of travelers everywhere. They’ll be smoking sheesha and listening to music, absorbed in the natural beauty of the place.

Diving, snorkeling, kayaking; there’s a lot to do in Cape Maclear, one of the best hippie destinations in Malawi. This hippie town sees backpackers come from far and near to chill on hammocks and talk about life over a few drinks. This bucolic haven lies on the banks of Lake Malawi, the second deepest and third-largest lake in Africa . This lovely little backwater has still stayed pretty rustic, despite its solid popularity with backpackers from around the world. However, it’s developed wonderfully over the years with more facilities and restaurants than earlier, thus with something for everyone. The best bit? This African oasis sits right in the heart of Lake Malawi National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site!

Auroville, a.k.a. ‘The City of Dawn’ is a small town located on India’s Coromandel Coast and is one of the best hippie destinations in India. The idea behind this experimental township is a place of unity and where mankind can thrive. What’s more, the idea is for people to live peacefully without discrimination or borders and with spirituality. Auroville is one of the biggest melting pot cities in India, with hippies coming from far and wide and finding peace. The epicenter of this lush utopia is the golden-domed Matrimandir, which is surrounded by an area called a peace area. Silence is maintained within Matrimandir to help ensure the tranquility of space for whoever steps in there. It’s no wonder that Auroville is one of India’s most popular hippie destinations.

Topping the list of the world’s best hippie destinations is Ko Pha Ngan in Thailand. Sitting just above  Ko Samui  in the Gulf of Thailand, this small island is a classic stop on the eastern hippie trail. Sometime between 1983 and 1993, travelers began playing music on the pristine beaches during the full moon. As the years went by, this tradition is what is now known as the infamous Full Moon Parties! Think chemically-enhanced, day-glo, and hard-partying people in neon with buckets of beer. Today, Ko Pha Ngan is a hippie paradise and a beach retreat, with the epicenter at Hat Ri. This sunset-facing beach at the island’s southern tip is the nucleus of the international hippie scene that offers everything from spirituality and hedonism to tai chi and trance music.
