The Ford Excursion is still alive and it's available with six doors

Sean Szymkowski

The last Ford Excursion rolled off the assembly line in 2005, but one Oklahoma-based shop hasn't let the hulking SUV die.

Based in Guthrie, Oklahoma, Custom Autos by Tim continues to make "new" Ford Excursions. The Detroit News profiled the shop in a Tuesday report. The shop typically marries an older Excursion body to a new F-Series Super Duty pickup chassis to create a "new" vehicle. Buyers have a few options. Current owners can bring their SUVs to owner Tim Huskey for a total rebuild, the shop can start from scratch with a Super Duty chassis the buyer provides, or the shop can use one of its stockpile of Super Duty chassis that it offers to buyers. The shop's biggest hook, however, is the fact that it will use the Super Duty chassis to create a stretched Excursion with six doors.

Prices start at $40,000 for buyers who bring their own vehicles, but Huskey said most people spend between $50,000 and $100,000 for a conversion. The business, to put it bluntly, is quite stable.

Huskey said he's certain he has enough business to last him for the next five years. It takes two months to complete each build, and right now, there's a two-month waiting list. The shop does about 40 Excursions each year.

The work varies for each customer, but Huskey is a master fabricator when it comes to building the "new" models. For example, one Excursion kept the original SUV's engine, dashboard, and transmission, while the rest was made up of used Excursions and F-Series Super Duties that had been scrapped due to damage. With business booming, Huskey said he'll need to start using F-650 chassis since they still match up with the Excursion's body. Unfortunately, he added he's not able to work with the latest trucks from Ford with their aluminum bodies .

At Ford, there's reportedly no regret for ending production of the mammoth SUV more than a decade ago. For Huskey, it created an opportunity.

2000-2005 Ford Excursion: Quick FAQ Review

2000-2005 ford excursion

The Ford Excursion is a big, tough extended-length SUV which  Ford Motor Company produced from 2005 to 2005, started for the North American marketplace. The Ford Excursion was the heaviest and longest SUV to get into mass production. The Excursion was founded upon the Ford F-250 Super Duty pickup truck. A 3/4-ton chassis vehicle, the Ford Excursion was created as a rival for its 2500-series (additionally a 3/4-ton) Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL.

The lowest-selling of Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln SUVs throughout its manufacturing, the Excursion was removed following the 2005 model year (a brief 2006 production series was created for Mexico). For the 2007 model year, Ford made the extended-length Expedition EL/MAX to coincide with the Chevrolet Suburban dimensions.

Because of criticism of its large size, poor fuel economy, and declining sales, the Ford Excursion was discontinued after the 2005 model year in America. For the 2007 model year, the Excursion was mostly replaced as Ford introduced an extended-length version of the Ford Expedition, called the Max for its 2019 model year.

All Ford Excursions were constructed at the Kentucky Truck Plant which is located in Louisville, KY.

Ford Excursion Frequently Asked Questions

ford excursion 2000-2005

The Ford Excursion is a pretty cool SUV and I still see diesel models going for good money on Craigslist. Although it’s been nearly 15 years since the last Ford Excursion rolled off the assembly line, the search volume and the number of people interested in this old-school SUV is higher than you’d think. That said, I’ve compiled a list of common FAQ below.

When did they stop making Ford Excursions?

Ford stopped making the Excursion in 2005 in North America and 2006 in Mexico.

Is Ford making excursion again?

It seemed like in 2018 that were trying to work on a relaunch, but it’s since gone quiet. There are currently no plans for a new Ford Excursion. I don’t think the Excursion will make a return. The Ford Expedition Max is the replacement.

What is the gas mileage of a Ford Excursion?

Ford Excursion MPG. Together with the 260-horsepower 4.0L V6 engine, 5-speed shiftable automatic transmission, and rear-wheel drive, the 2005 Ford Excursion was averaging 16.5 MPG.

How many does a Ford Excursion seat?

A full-size SUV with seating for around nine, the 2002 Ford Excursion comes standard with a 5.4L V8 engine and is accessible with a 7.3L petrol engine.

Why did they discontinue the Ford Excursion?

Due to criticism of its substantial dimensions, lousy fuel economy, and falling earnings, the Ford Excursion was stopped after the 2005 model year in the USA. The Ford Excursion was replaced by the Ford Expedition.

What was the last year of Ford Excursion?

2005 in the US and 06′ in South America.

What frame is the Ford Excursion built on?

The Ford Excursion is an SUV Which was Made by Ford from 2000 to 2005, and the Excursion was built upon the Ford F-250 Super Duty pickup truck.

Ford Excursion Chassis

ford excursion chassis

The Ford Excursion was created sharing the stage design of the F-250 Super Duty pickup truck. Sharing almost all of its own chassis parts and measurements with the F-250, the Excursion shares a frequent width, wheelbase, and front/rear track with its F-250 counterpart. Other shared assemblies include front and back suspension, together with the steering equipment. The back axle for all Excursions was a Sterling 10.5 axle. The four-wheel drive models were outfitted with an NV-273 transfer case and Dana 50 front axle.

Throughout its entire production, the 5.4L Triton V8 was standard, with the 6.8L V10 as an alternative. As a running change during the 2003 model year, the Navistar-sourced Powerstroke diesel V8 was changed in the 7.3L V8 into the 6.0L V8. The 4-speed 4R100 automatic was standard with the Triton engines and the 7.3L diesel; a 5R110W 5-speed automatic was paired with the 6.0L diesel.

Although using the 3/4 ton chassis of this F-250, the Excursion was rated using a GVWR of 8,900 lb (4,000 kg) when equipped with gasoline engines, and 9,200 lb (4,200 kg) with equipped with diesel engines. As its GVWR was over 8,500 pounds, the Excursion was exempt from EPA fuel economy ratings; reviewers mentioned fuel economy in the array of 12-15mpg using the V10 gas engine.

More About the Ford Excursion

ford excursion

Concerning size, the Ford Excursion is the king of big sport-utilities. Supremely stable at speed, it feels safe and secure on the open highway. Whether you’ve got a good deal of cargo to carry, a lot of family to transport, a big trailer to pull, or all the above, the 2000-2005 Ford Excursion is ready for whatever you throw its way.

The Excursion seats eight or nine passengers, depending on how it’s configured. It can tow up to 11,000 lbs. Options include a strong gasoline-fueled V-10 and a state-of-the-art turbo-diesel V8. While the Excursion is too big for serious off-road riding, its discretionary four-wheel-drive and all-terrain tires allow it to deal with scenic shale roads, snowy highways, and slippery boat ramps, those areas which are accessible by a heavy-duty Ford pickup.

The Excursion is a beast, however, taking up more garage space, parking space, and street space than anything else this side of a dually. It is no minivan. The Excursion is best suited to families who tow boats, horses or other trailers.

Ford Excursion Configurations

ford excursion configurations

The Ford Excursion comes chiefly in four model levels: XLS , XLT , Eddie Bauer , and Limited . Each is available with rear-wheel drive (2WD) or four-wheel drive (4WD).

XLS 2WD ($36,585) and XLS 4WD ($39,840) include a moderate amount of standard equipment, such as four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes (ABS), tilt steering wheel, cruise control, a 40/20/40 split front bench seat, a 60/40 split-folding second-row chair, a folding/removable third-row chair, power/heated mirrors, capability windows and door locks, remote keyless entry, AM/FM/cassette/CD stereo, and an overhead console. XLS is identified by body-color side moldings, black running boards, and 16-inch chromed steel wheels and tires.

XLT 2WD ($37,575) and XLT 4WD ($40,830) add ability adjustable front bucket seats with a floor console, automatic headlamps, and rear-seat sound controls. Recognize an XLT by its platinum-finish body-side cladding and 16-inch aluminum wheels and tires.

Eddie Bauer

Eddie Bauer 2WD ($40,660) and 4WD ($43,760) add power rear quarter windows, Reverse Sensing System, automatic climate control, trip computer, power-adjustable pedals, Auto-dimming rearview mirror, two-tone leather seating surfaces, and cherry woodgrain interior decoration. Arizona Beige front and rear bumpers, grille, body cladding, and wheel lips offer outside identity, as well as illuminated running boards.

Limited 2WD ($41,985) and 4WD ($45,085) include a premium stereo with an in-dash six-disc CD changer, heated front seats, memory seats and pedals, climate and audio controls on the steering wheel, premium leather seating surfaces and a HomeLink transmitter. Body cladding and wheel lips revert to body color, but with a chrome insert. Bumpers and grille are body-color, also.

Engine Choices

Three engines are available: a 5.4-liter V8, a 6.8-liter V10, and a 6.0-liter turbocharged diesel V8. The 5.4-liter V8 is standard in XLS, XLT, and 2WD versions of the Eddie Bauer and Limited. The V10 is standard in 4WD Eddie Bauer and Limited models, optional ($585) on other models. The petrol ($4,755-$5,345) is available for many versions. All Excursions come with automatic transmission: a four-speed automatic with the gas engines, a five-speed automatic with the diesel.

Lots of the deluxe-model luxuries are available as features on the basic XLS, for instance, adjustable pedals ($120), and six-disc CD changer ($255). The DVD entertainment system ($1500) is available on all models except the XLS; wireless headphones are added to the system for 2004. All Ford Excursions come with a seven-wire trailer harness. An optional 4WD Trailer Tow Group ($275) includes manually telescoping trailer mirrors with heated glass, integrated turn signals and clearance lights; and a rear anti-roll bar. The mirrors are also available by themselves ($220).

Ford Excursion Interior

ford excursion interior

The 2000-2005 Ford Excursion comes with a nicely designed interior. The dash is attractive and well designed and all the controls are easy to locate and operate.

The chairs are comfortable. It doesn’t matter whether you are sitting in the front seats, second row or third row, all the seats offer generous legroom, headroom and elbow room. Six adults can ride in comfort with 48 cubic feet of cargo space. For shorter trips, like going to a restaurant, the Excursion can seat eight, or nine if you opt for the XLS.

Remove the third-row seat, and the Excursion can easily carry five and more than 100 cubic feet of gear. Removing the third-row seat is easy: Flip the seatback forward, yank a bar and pull the seat toward the rear of the vehicle. The seat weighs 75 lbs.

Final Thoughts

Ford’s gargantuan sport-utility is a stable platform for towing heavy trailers. At the same time, it can also carry a truckload of fishermen. It rides fairly well for a heavy-duty truck and it’s luxurious and comfortable. For those who wish to tow trailers up to 11,000 pounds, the Ford Excursion is a good alternative to a pickup with a cap. Ford says it’s going to continue to create the Excursion through the 2005 model year.

The Ford Excursion shouldn’t, however, be considered an alternative to a minivan. It’s far too thirsty, and its dimensions, weight and design make for poor maneuverability and handling when compared with minivans and light-duty SUVs.

Ford Excursion

ford excursion

No matter what the new Ford Excursion's virtues may be--and there are many--a fair number of folks seem to have a problem seeing past the sheer mass of this thing. Some of these same folks raised an almighty furor when Ford's new imperial-size utility vehicle--now the absolute monarch of the motorized mastodons--was unveiled earlier this year. They portrayed the Excursion as an unmitigated menace to smaller vehicles and, with fuel economy unlikely to top 18 mpg, a serious spewer of carbon dioxide--the so-called greenhouse gas--despite the Excursion's Low-Emission Vehicle status.

To be sure, there's no denying the Excursion's dimensions. At 226.7 inches by 80.0 inches by 77.4 inches (including roof rack), it's 7.2 inches longer, 3.3 inches wider, and between 5.4 and 5.8 inches taller than the current General Motors Suburban. It's also heavier, with curb weights crowding the four-ton frontier.

But let's acquire a little perspective here. The Excursion is one big bopper, for sure, but the Suburban is no wraith, and it's had the full-size-sport-utility market cornered for about 65 years. Although Ford did grab a chunk of the full-size-SUV business with the Expedition and the Lincoln Navigator, Suburban sales continued to soar, topping 150,000 last year. Ford execs couldn't see any reason to allow GM to define and dominate a steadily expanding segment.

"This has been essentially a one-vehicle segment for a long time," says Ford Division president Jim O'Connor. "That's simply unheard of in this business."

Ford's entry into the mastodon market is driven by a couple of compelling motives. First, the Expedition/Navigator program, which succeeded beyond Ford's wildest dreams, proves that the market for king-size sport-utilities still has a considerable potential for growth. People want the big utes for heavy-duty chores, such as towing, that the smaller ones can't handle, or can't handle as well. The Expedition's upper towing limit, for example, is 8300 pounds; a suitably equipped Excursion can drag a trailer weighing up to 10,000. The same goes for the Suburban.

Second, there's money to be made on big expensive SUVs based on large-volume pickups. Financial analysts calculate that every Navigator nets almost $15,000 for FoMoCo. It's not unreasonable to assume that each Excursion will contribute almost as much cash to the corporate bottom line. You don't make that kind of money on Escorts, folks. Or on Explorers.

There are a couple other ironies relative to the initial Excursion backlash. Although it's heftier, the Excursion's dimensions are about the same as those of the largest Ford Econoline van, a vehicle type that has thus far failed to provoke righteous indignation among the self-appointed environmental ombudsmen. For that matter, there are Ford full-size pickups that are a root and a half longer than the Excursion. Where were these people when the civilian edition of the AM General Hummer came along? Of course, the Sierra Club doesn't go after companies that sell only a handful of $70,000-to-$85,000 vehicles.

Speaking of safety, one of the major concerns of the anti-ute hysteria is what happens when a giant SUV, with its high ground clearance, smites an ordinary passenger car. We think Ford has a pretty good answer in the Excursion's patented BlockerBeam system, a tubular steel fixture mounted below and behind the front bumper. If or when hard contact occurs, the beam is designed to prevent the Excursion from riding up and over a smaller vehicle. In the rear, a modified Class IV trailer hitch serves the same function.

The Excursion can ingest up to 165 cubic feet of car go with its center seats folded forward and its rearmost seat removed. Thanks to a pair of rollers, one person can manage the removal task, although it entails crawling inside to lift the base free of the latches. There's room for those ubiquitous four-by-eight-foot sheets of building material on the almost-flat floor, despite the inside spare-tire stowage (which helped to make space for the 44-gallon fuel tank).

He however recommends that you always use synthetic oil when you need to refill the oil filter.

How Soon to Expect Rust on a Ford Excursion

You won’t find rust on your Ford Excursion until about 15 years after its production.

When rust eventually appears, it does severe damage to the vehicle such that you might have to dispose of it.

The first signs of rust show up on the rock panel of the truck, then moves up to the rear door in a short while.

Some users say they had to do an expensive repaint job to restore their Excursion to its previous condition.

Others say their mechanics advised them to get a replacement.

How Long Do Ford Excursions Last Compared to Similar Cars?

Compared to other large SUVs, Ford Excursions last longer. Let’s look at the following comparisons:

Ford Excursion vs. Chevrolet Suburban

The Ford Excursion lasts longer than the Chevrolet Suburban.

On average, the distance a Suburban can last is 200,000 miles. Research also shows that the possibility of the Suburban lasting for 300,00 miles is very rare, even with adequate maintenance.

The shortest mileage reported for the Ford Excursion is 300,000 miles. If you give your Ford Excursion proper care, you can stretch its service life to 600,000 miles.

In relation to gas mileage, the Suburban wins. The Chevrolet Suburban will last longer on a gallon of fuel than the Ford Excursion on the road.

While Ford Excursion offers just 11 miles per gallon in the city, the Chevy Suburban boasts a mileage of 15 mpg.

Ford Excursion vs. GMC Yukon

Once again, the Excursion lasts longer than the GMC Yukon. Ford Excursions will last for 300,000 miles at the very least. The GMC Yukon is only durable for 200,000 miles.

In contrast, the GMC Yukon trumps the Ford Excursion in gas mileage.

A gallon of fuel will last for 14 miles if you are driving a Yukon in the city. The Ford Excursion can take you 11 miles on city roads with the same amount of fuel.

Regarding rust, Ford Excursions fare better than Yukons. Depending on the severity of manufacturing defects, rust appears on the Yukon from 3 to 12 years after production.

You won’t find rust on your Ford Excursion until about 15 years after production.

Ford Excursion vs. Dodge Durango

The Dodge Durango may last long, but it still doesn’t come close to the Ford Excursion in durability. The Ford Excursion can last as long as 600,000 miles, but the best the Durango can do is 250,000 miles.

It appears Ford does not offer the best gas mileage, as even the Dodge Durango offers better fuel efficiency than the Ford Excursion.

On the highway, you can expect your Durango to last for 23 miles on a gallon of fuel. However, Ford Excursion will only last for 15 miles per gallon on the highway.

Ford Excursion may be very durable. However, for a car that lasts so long, it offers poor gas mileage. This is not surprising though, considering the Excursion’s hulking size and powerful engine.

Please also read our article about how long the Chevrolet Impala lasts .

Is Ford Excursion Reliable?

Ford Excursions are reliable, but their reliability is only about average. For example, RepairPal rates the Ford Excursion only a 3.5 out of 5 in reliability.

On the plus side, Ford Excursion trucks are very durable. Compared to similar cars, they last very long.

For example, while the Excursion lasts 300,000 miles at least, the Chevrolet Suburban, a similar SUV, may struggle to reach 300,000 miles.

In contrast, they deliver poor gas mileage. The average MPG (mile per gallon) is for the Suburban is 21 miles on the highway, but the best Ford Excursion can offer is 15 mpg.

The Best and Worst Years for the Ford Excursion

2004 was the worst year for Ford Excursions. Even though it did not receive the highest number of complaints, the problems reported were serious and required expensive repairs.

Customers complained about high repair costs of individual car parts and the less-than-standard gas mileage.

Other complaints focused on oil leakages and engine failures. For instance, it costs $1,300 to fix an engine oil leak.

The best model year for Ford Excursions was 2005. First, it had few complaints. In addition, the high number of positive reviews the model year garnered put its performance rate at 4.8 out of 5.

The 2005 model year offers sufficient room for luggage and passenger, and a strong build to haul heavy loads. On the downside, the gas mileage the model year offers is very low.

What About Recalls for these Models?

The Ford Excursion has witnessed 12 recalls. Some of the recalls involved steering column problems, speed control deactivation switch, and camshaft position sensor.

Below is a table listing the number of recalls by model year:

 Ford Excursion Model Year

The following are the model years of the Ford Excursion:

  • 2000 Ford Excursion
  • 2001 Ford Excursion
  • 2002 Ford Excursion
  • 2003 Ford Excursion
  • 2004 Ford Excursion
  • 2005 Ford Excursion
  • 2006 Ford Excursion

Are Ford Excursions Expensive to Maintain?

No, Ford Excursions aren’t expensive to maintain.

The average cost for yearly maintenance on large SUVs is $1,127. Average yearly maintenance only costs about $605 for the Excursion.

However, paying for the repair of faulty parts in Ford Excursions is another story. For instance, the average cost of repairing an engine oil leakage is $1,300.

How Long Do Brakes Last?

The service life for Excursion brakes ranges from 30,000 to 60,000 miles. However, you can make your brakes last longer by going gentle on them when you drive.

If you avoid staying too close to other cars on the road, you won’t need to stomp on your brakes in traffic. The practice of stomping on your brakes is actually the reason your brakes wear out faster.

In case you need to replace your brake pads, Ford Excursion brake pads can cost between $23 to $60.

How Long Do Batteries Last?

The batteries on Ford Excursion can last for about 2-3 years depending on how you maintain your vehicle. One way to make your batteries last longer is to ensure that you turn off all engine lights before you exit your car.

How Long Do Tires Last?

The most common tires Ford Excursions use are Firestone tires and they can last for about 12,000-15,000 miles.

If you want to make your tires last longer, you need to check what season the tires are suitable for. For instance, if the tires are all-season, then you might be safe using them year round.

However, if you live in an area characterized by extreme weather conditions, get tires that fit the bill. For chilly and wet terrain, get winter tires.

How Long Do Transmissions Last?

Ford Excursion transmissions last for 130,000-180,000 miles. Your transmissions will last longer if you take them for servicing after every 7,500 miles.

How Long Do Spark Plugs Last?

Your Ford Excursion spark plugs can last for 100,000 miles if there are no production defects.

What Is the Insurance Cost for Ford Excursion?

Your Ford Excursion insurance can cost between $1,000 to $5,000 per year.

Certain factors determine how much you will pay to insure your car:

  • The vehicle’s age: A newer model will cost more to insure than an older model.
  • Your location: The place you live can also affect your insurance cost. For instance, users in Georgia pay less than users in Detroit.
  • Discounts:  Insuring all your insurables such as your life and your home might earn you a discount.
  • Credit history: Your age, and credit history can affect how much you pay for your car insurance.

Tips on how to Prolong the Service Life of your Vehicle

Here are tips to help you get maximum longevity from your vehicle:

  • Ensure you change your oil filter regularly. Ford advises that you do an oil change every time your car hits the 7,500-mile mark.
  • Always remember to rotate your tires every time you take your car for servicing. This practice will increase your driving speed and make your tires last longer.
  • Change your air filter every time your car reaches 15,000 to 30,000 miles.

how many ford excursions were made

Let’s take a trip back to 1999. Bill Clinton was President, Ask Jeeves is the largest search engine on the internet and Google just became a thing. The average price of gasoline is $1.17 per gallon across the U.S. People still have pagers, and it won’t be for eight more years till the first iPhone is released. It was a different time, it was the best of times. It was a time when Ford decided to make an SUV based on the Super Duty pickup line, and boy did they.

Based on the F250 Super Duty pickup, the Excursion is considered a heavy duty Class 2 truck. A 3/4 ton chassis with front and rear beam axles and engine options ranging from the 5.4L Triton V-8, the 6.8L Triton V-10 and the dreamy 7.3L Power Stroke V-8 Turbo Diesel. It featured a Dana 50 front axle (it is like a Dana 60 housing with Dana 44 insides), and a Ford/Sterling 10.5 rear axle, it shared three quarters of its frame with the F250, and most of its hard components were the same as well.

how many ford excursions were made

Unfortunately, in 2005, due to mixed feelings on the Excursion because of its size and poor fuel economy, especially when the life of excess was coming under fire due to a tumbling economy and rapidly rising fuel costs, the decision was made to cancel the Excursion and focus on the F-150 deprived Expedition going forward.

The 7.3L and 6.8L-powered Excursions are hot items in the Overland world, and those that have not been modified or tuned and are rust free are going up in value just as fast as a comparable Land Cruiser. It is not uncommon to find ‘00 and ‘01 7.3L Eddie Bauer trimmed Excursions selling for close to $20,000, regardless of mileage.

Being the ultimate plus-sized SUV, we can understand why. These monstrosities combined all the best parts of American diesel full-sized trucks, and mixed it with the legacy of big SUVs. Suddenly with that power stroke under the hood, you had a massive SUV that was infinitely reliable, could tow exceptionally well, and still managed to get over 20 miles per gallon. There is not a single vehicle like the Excursion, as it was, in a class all its own, and forever will be. Who might dethrone the king of excess? We do not know, but our money is on Rivian.

Why were so many metro stations in Moscow renamed?

Okhotny Ryad station in Soviet times and today.

Okhotny Ryad station in Soviet times and today.

The Moscow metro system has 275 stations, and 28 of them have been renamed at some point or other—and several times in some cases. Most of these are the oldest stations, which opened in 1935.

The politics of place names

The first station to change its name was Ulitsa Kominterna (Comintern Street). The Comintern was an international communist organization that ceased to exist in 1943, and after the war Moscow authorities decided to call the street named after it something else. In 1946, the station was renamed Kalininskaya. Then for several days in 1990, the station was called Vozdvizhenka, before eventually settling on Aleksandrovsky Sad, which is what it is called today.

The banner on the entraince reads:

The banner on the entraince reads: "Kalininskaya station." Now it's Alexandrovsky Sad.

Until 1957, Kropotkinskaya station was called Dvorets Sovetov ( Palace of Soviets ). There were plans to build a monumental Stalinist high-rise on the site of the nearby Cathedral of Christ the Saviour , which had been demolished. However, the project never got off the ground, and after Stalin's death the station was named after Kropotkinskaya Street, which passes above it.

Dvorets Sovetov station, 1935. Letters on the entrance:

Of course, politics was the main reason for changing station names. Initially, the Moscow Metro itself was named after Lazar Kaganovich, Joseph Stalin’s right-hand man. Kaganovich supervised the construction of the first metro line and was in charge of drawing up a master plan for reconstructing Moscow as the "capital of the proletariat."

In 1955, under Nikita Khrushchev's rule and during the denunciation of Stalin's personality cult, the Moscow Metro was named in honor of Vladimir Lenin.

New Metro stations that have been opened since the collapse of the Soviet Union simply say "Moscow Metro," although the metro's affiliation with Vladimir Lenin has never officially been dropped.

Zyablikovo station. On the entrance, there are no more signs that the metro is named after Lenin.

Stations that bore the names of Stalin's associates were also renamed under Khrushchev. Additionally, some stations were named after a neighborhood or street and if these underwent name changes, the stations themselves had to be renamed as well.

Until 1961 the Moscow Metro had a Stalinskaya station that was adorned by a five-meter statue of the supreme leader. It is now called Semyonovskaya station.

Left: Stalinskaya station. Right: Now it's Semyonovskaya.

Left: Stalinskaya station. Right: Now it's Semyonovskaya.

The biggest wholesale renaming of stations took place in 1990, when Moscow’s government decided to get rid of Soviet names. Overnight, 11 metro stations named after revolutionaries were given new names. Shcherbakovskaya became Alekseyevskaya, Gorkovskaya became Tverskaya, Ploshchad Nogina became Kitay-Gorod and Kirovskaya turned into Chistye Prudy. This seriously confused passengers, to put it mildly, and some older Muscovites still call Lubyanka station Dzerzhinskaya for old times' sake.

At the same time, certain stations have held onto their Soviet names. Marksistskaya and Kropotkinskaya, for instance, although there were plans to rename them too at one point.

"I still sometimes mix up Teatralnaya and Tverskaya stations,” one Moscow resident recalls .

“Both have been renamed and both start with a ‘T.’ Vykhino still grates on the ear and, when in 1991 on the last day of my final year at school, we went to Kitay-Gorod to go on the river cruise boats, my classmates couldn’t believe that a station with that name existed."

The city government submitted a station name change for public discussion for the first time in 2015. The station in question was Voykovskaya, whose name derives from the revolutionary figure Pyotr Voykov. In the end, city residents voted against the name change, evidently not out of any affection for Voykov personally, but mainly because that was the name they were used to.

What stations changed their name most frequently?

Some stations have changed names three times. Apart from the above-mentioned Aleksandrovsky Sad (Ulitsa Kominterna->Kalininskaya->Vozdvizhenka->Aleksandrovsky Sad), a similar fate befell Partizanskaya station in the east of Moscow. Opened in 1944, it initially bore the ridiculously long name Izmaylovsky PKiO im. Stalina (Izmaylovsky Park of Culture and Rest Named After Stalin). In 1947, the station was renamed and simplified for convenience to Izmaylovskaya. Then in 1963 it was renamed yet again—this time to Izmaylovsky Park, having "donated" its previous name to the next station on the line. And in 2005 it was rechristened Partizanskaya to mark the 60th anniversary of victory in World War II.

Partizanskaya metro station, nowadays.

Another interesting story involves Alekseyevskaya metro station. This name was originally proposed for the station, which opened in 1958, since a village with this name had been located here. It was then decided to call the station Shcherbakovskaya in honor of Aleksandr Shcherbakov, a politician who had been an associate of Stalin. Nikita Khrushchev had strained relations with Shcherbakov, however, and when he got word of it literally a few days before the station opening the builders had to hastily change all the signs. It ended up with the concise and politically correct name of Mir (Peace).

The name Shcherbakovskaya was restored in 1966 after Khrushchev's fall from power. It then became Alekseyevskaya in 1990.

But the station that holds the record for the most name changes is Okhotny Ryad, which opened in 1935 on the site of a cluster of market shops. When the metro system was renamed in honor of Lenin in 1955, this station was renamed after Kaganovich by way of compensation. The name lasted just two years though because in 1957 Kaganovich fell out of favor with Khrushchev, and the previous name was returned. But in 1961 it was rechristened yet again, this time in honor of Prospekt Marksa, which had just been built nearby.

In 1990, two historical street names—Teatralny Proyezd and Mokhovaya Street—were revived to replace Prospekt Marksa, and the station once again became Okhotny Ryad.

‘Total Disgrace’: Anger, Frustration as Mass Heating Failures Across Russia Leave Thousands in the Cold

P ODOLSK, Moscow region – Residents throughout Russia affected by unprecedented winter heating outages in recent days have expressed their frustration and urged local authorities to restore heating in their homes.

In Podolsk, a town some 30 kilometers south of the capital Moscow, at least 149,000 residents — nearly half of its population — were left without heating when a heating main burst at a nearby private ammunition plant.

“It’s a total disgrace. There is no heating and no hot water. We have to sleep in sleeping bags,” Yuri, a local resident, told The Moscow Times.

“I have no words to describe how bad the situation is," said Yuri, who declined to provide his surname. "We have had no heating for almost six days."

Heating issues have affected residents in the Moscow region, where temperatures have plunged to as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius in the past week, as well as people in the Far East Primorye region , the cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg , Penza , the southern Voronezh and Volgograd regions and more.

In the Tver region, a group of residents filmed an appeal to President Vladimir Putin, saying that they “are freezing from the cold” in the village of Novozavidovsky.

“We're literally being killed by the cold,” a woman in the video said, adding that they have been sending requests to local authorities since September after their houses were connected to a boiler room whose power was reportedly insufficient.

“This is some kind of torture and extermination of the population 100 kilometers from Moscow,” she added.

Residents of the Moscow region town of Elektrostal lit a fire in the street to draw the authorities’ attention to the heating problem.

“It’s impossible to stay in our houses. We're freezing!” a group of women in the video said.

Suffering from subzero temperatures, residents are placing the blame on local authorities and utility services for failing to take necessary precautions and not taking action to resolve the situation.

“We are sending complaints everywhere but no one listens to us. We have portable heaters working in every room, but the temperature inside is still 10 degrees Celsius,” Yelena from Podolsk said.

“There is a clinic and a hospital, as well as kindergartens, where there is no heating. And we have no answers, no assistance, no explanation,” Yelena added.

Podolsk authorities opened temporary heating centers and declared a state of emergency.

Local authorities linked the heating problems to the fact that the town is heated by a boiler plant owned by the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant, a private ammunition factory and one of the largest weapon cartridge production enterprises in the country.

“The facility is under tight security conditions, which limits our ability to oversee winter preparations,” the Moscow region’s Vice Governor Yevgeny Khromushin said last week. “We were unaware of the problem for nearly a day.”

An unidentified Moscow region official and two senior executives at the plant were arrested on suspicion of providing unsafe services, Russia’s Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes, said in a statement Tuesday.

Investigators said that Podolsk’s deputy mayor was accused of misusing authority by issuing a readiness certificate for the boiler house at the plant.

In the neighboring Tver region, the authorities opened a criminal case over the laundering of over 84 million rubles ($938,993) in heating bills paid by residents, the Astra Telegram channel reported this week, citing unidentified sources. According to investigators, the heads of the local water intake and boiler house misappropriated the heating payments for personal use.

Reacting to the heating failures, Putin on Tuesday asked Emergency Situations Minister Alexander Kurenkov to provide heat and electricity to the affected residents.

The outages appear to be the latest effect of several decades of crumbling infrastructure in Russia which have been linked to endemic corruption and mismanagement.

The overall decay of Russia's municipal infrastructure surpassed 70% in 2022, the pro-Kremlin newspaper Izvestia reported .

According to Sergei Pakhomov, head of the State Duma’s Construction, Housing and Utilities Committee, water pipes that were 90 years old or even older were still in use as recently as two years ago in some cases.

Housing, utilities and communal services are a common source of problems for Russians during the winter.

In St. Petersburg, residents regularly complain about extensive ice coverage on city streets and sidewalks, with many people ending up in the hospital over the years due to slipping and falling accidents.

In the Siberian republic of Khakassia, two villages were left without electricity last month due to apparent issues with outdated communication systems.

In the winter of 2020, five people in the Perm region were killed after a pipe burst.

When asked about the latest heating outages, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the problems and linked them to poor municipal infrastructure, saying that people “had to endure a lot of inconvenience in the cold and without electricity.”

"Despite all the titanic efforts to update all housing and communal services systems, there's still a certain part that remains considerably deteriorated. These programs will continue, but it is impossible to update all pipes and all housing and communal services systems in 10-15 years,” Peskov said.

As for now, residents affected by heating issues appear to lack optimism that the problems will be solved efficiently.

"It's been a week since we've had heating, and the temperature in my apartment is around 11 degrees Celsius,” Podolsk resident Lidiya told The Moscow Times.

“Unfortunately, no one knows when it will be repaired,” she added.
