Buyer’s Guide: Factors to consider when choosing a travel pillow

If you are new to this type of product and want a solution to find the perfect travel companion, certain things to consider when choosing a travel pillow.

How to choose?

The first thing is to make sure it provides good support that matches your back and neck.

Consider choosing a fabric that gives comfort according to the weather, size, and weight for convenience and check its durability for long-lasting.

Best travel pillow overall

Cabeau Evolution S3 Travel Pillow, Amazon, $57.95

The Cabeau Travel Pillow is one of the most loved u-pillows online. Picture: TikTok/carinastathis

Loved by everyone from Escape's Associate Digital Editor Simone Mitchell to travel TikTokers, the Cabeau is a clear winner that supports your neck, chin and shoulders with its 360° shaped design and memory foam core.

Armed with high sides and a flat back it keeps your neck upright and reduces "bobble head" which also makes it fantastic for middle seat travellers.

"I was originally dubious as it is super firm and looks a bit like a neck brace – but that is why it’s so good! It keeps your head from lolling around and is super supportive," says Simone. "One of the best travel items I've ever purchased. I put everyone onto them."

Other clever features include an adjustable strap at the back to attach to your chair for added support and a toggle in front to ensure it doesn't separate in use. It packs down to about half its size and comes with a nifty carry bag that you can clip to your backpack.

Travel writer Catherine Best puts it at the front of the pack, calling it the "Rolls-Royce of U-pillows" while TikToker @carinastathis says it's "the best travel purchase I've ever made."

Best travel pillow - runner-up

Cabeau The Neck's Evolution (TNE) S3 Travel Neck Pillow, Amazon, $101.48

Cabeau The Neck's Evolution, TNE S3 Travel Neck Pillow. Picture: Amazon

Far be it from us to have favourites but when you have not one but two of Escape's writers rave about Cabeau your ears prick up. Used by Escape travel writer James  Booth , the TNE (short for The Neck's Evolution) is, you guessed it, an improved version of Cabeau's beloved Evolution pillow.

The raised side supports, flattened back, memory foam core and seat strap are all still in play with the biggest difference being the chin-strap. Designed to stop your head from bobbing here, there and everywhere, it's fully customisable and produces an opening large enough for optimal airflow to reduce overheating.

The fabric dries quickly and is machine washable.

At sub $100 it's one of the most expensive pillows on our list but definitely worth it if you can afford it.

Best head pillow for travel

Go Travel Double Decker Travel Pillow, Amazon, $37.80

Go Travel Double Decker Travel Pillow. Picture: Amazon

As the name suggests, this pillow can be worn in two ways: flat-back and head-rest.

In ‘flat-back’ mode the pillow’s two-tier structure provides 40% more neck support. To enjoy ‘head-rest’ mode, simply unclip the flexible arms and tuck into the rear pocket for additional support at the back of the head.

"Clever and comfy travel pillow," says one customer on Google Reviews. "Very light compared to the bulky memory foam ones I've tested," they go on to say.

Best neck pillow for travel

Trtl Travel Pillow, trtl, $72.99

Leaning into the trtl travel pillow. Picture: Stephanie Yip/Escape

Tried and tested by Stephanie Yip, eComm Travel Writer

Looking more like a scarf than a pillow, the trtl has a curved internal spine that wraps around your neck and chin to offer support with little to no lolling about as you get your zzzs.

It took me a few attempts to get the tightness, tension and position right. I originally had it around my neck only but found winding it above my ear cradled my head and neck better. Once fitted it's quite comfortable and fixes your head in an upright position. Personally, I liked leaving a small amount of give so I could lean into the brace similar to how I would when sleeping on someone's shoulder.

I loved how lightweight it was and how it could be adjusted to your preferences. The fleece material was nice to touch, but being wrapped around my neck was much too warm for a summer car ride. However, I can imagine it would be perfect for an ice-cold plane trip.

As the internal spine sits on one side of your head, it's not for those wiggle around in their seat. You need to commit to leaning your head to one side or suffer having to unwrap and rewrap it to a new position.

The instructions say you can fit it under your chin for a forward sleeping position but this felt wildly uncomfortable to me do to its rigidity and I probably wouldn't recommend it if this is how you prefer to sleep.

Best neck pillow for travel, runner-up

Ostrichpillow Go Travel Pillow, Amazon, $117.68

Ostrichpillow Go Travel Pillow. Picture: Amazon

You may be familiar with Ostrichpillow's revolutionary napping pillow which looks like you've just about buried your head in the sand to get away from it all. While an option on the plane, it might turn one too many heads. An alternative that falls more in line with traditional pillows is the Go Travel Pillow.

This modified u-pillow has a raised back and wraps completely around your neck to prevent neck pain. Over 670 customers give it a 4.6-star rating on the official Ostrichpillow site with customers saying it "looks and feels good" and is "very comfortable and keeps the head stable while sleeping."

As a bonus the cover is machine washable.

Best U-shaped travel pillow

aeris Memory Foam Travel Pillow, Amazon, $66.93

aeris Memory Foam Travel Pillow. Picture: Amazon

A thick memory foam core meets a luxuriously soft velour cover in this highly rated travel pillow that's loved by over a thousand travellers. The material is temperature sensitive to reduce overheating and there's a clip to secure it firmly to your neck. The traditional u-shaped design lets you easily twist it from the back of your neck to the front if you find your head lolling forward, and the handy travel case makes transporting it a breeze.

"Incredibly easy to transport due to its compact size and lightweight design," says one 5-star Amazon reviewer. "It is also soft and comfortable, providing a cozy and supportive experience during long journeys," they also said.

Best memory foam pillow

Fosmon Travel Neck Pillow, Amazon, $42.99

Fosmon Travel Neck Pillow. Picture: Amazon

The standout features are memory foam and a design that supports and cradles the neck. The adjustable strap allows for a snug, regular or relaxed fit and the external mesh vents to reduce overheating. But what really sells it for us is the inclusion of ear plugs so that you can diminish the sounds of the cabin as you drift off to sleep.

Amazon customers rave about it, calling it "very comfortable" with "just the right amount of firmness".

Best kids travel pillow

Infanzia Kids Chin Supporting Travel Neck Pillow, Amazon, $44

Infanzia Kids Chin Supporting Travel Neck Pillow. Photo: Amazon.

This fan favourite has garnered a 4.4 star rating on Amazon across over 8000 reviews and has been ergonomically designed to support small necks. A thicker front supports the head as it flops from side to side and the entire pillow is machine washable. Because we all know how messy kids can get - even at the best of times.

For infants aged 0-1 I recommend the Kakiblin Infant Travel Pillow which is safer for babies and helps keep their neck and head stable in a car seat or pram.

Best inflatable pillow

Sea to Summit Aeros Premium Traveller, Amazon, $59.95

Sea to Summit Aeros Premium Traveller. Picture: Amazon

Inflatable pillows deflate into a compact shell making them one of your most lightweight options. The Sea to Summit takes little to no effort to inflate with Motor1 saying it took just four breaths to get it up to size. It folds down into a handy travel pouch, weighs 100 grams and comes with a lifetime guarantee.

"I originally bought this solely for an abroad trip, but honestly it's so comfortable that I've used it to take naps in the recliner at home as well as car rides," confesses one five star reviewer on Amazon. "It honestly is worth every penny!" they said.

Best lumbar pillow for travel

AirComfy Ease Inflatable Travel Pillow, Amazon, $58.35

AirComfy Ease Inflatable Travel Pillow, Instagram/aircomfytravel

This Amazon favourite comes with a packsack and carabiner to clip onto your carry-on luggage in a snap. Shaped like an infinity symbol it’s filled with inflated foam, as opposed to air, and can be attached to a plane or car headrest or used on the small of your back for lumbar support.

When fully inflated it measures 36cm x 22cm x 9cm.

"Nothing to dislike. Arrived promptly, and has been supporting my back ever since. Love it," said one happy Amazon customer.

Best cheap and affordable travel pillows

Aero Snoozer, Amazon, $11.97

Go Travel Aero Snoozer. Picture: Amazon

The Snoozer inflates and deflates in seconds, provides ample support around the chin as well as the neck and the front clip keeps everything snug. A wide air valves allows you to inflate and deflate it within seconds. It packs up flat for space-saving.

Umerci Memory Foam Neck Pillow, Amazon, $17.89

Umerci Memory Foam Neck Pillow, Amazon

Constructed out of memory foam and soft magnetic therapy cloth Umerci's neck pillow is an Amazon's Choice winner with over 4,000 happy customers giving it an average rating of 4.3 stars. At just over $20, including free delivery, it's a bargain.

There are two support points, one at the front and one at the back to relieve neck fatigue and it comes with an eye mask and ear buds to complete your sleep routine.

Best travel pillow for headphones

BCOZZY Pillow, Amazon, $147.34

BCozzy Chin Supporting Travel Pillow. Picture: Amazon.

Extra long arms fold over each other at the front of your neck adding a second layer of support for your head and chin with this trending j pillow. As the BCOZZY can sit quite low there’s ample room to wear over-ears while enjoying its comfort.

At $150-plus it4s not cheap, but Amazon reviewers say it’s worth it and were impressed by its quality and support in keeping their head upright all flight long.

Best travel pillow for long-haul flights

Travelrest Nest Patented Memory Foam Pillow, Amazon, $176.27

Travelrest Nest Patented Memory Foam Pillow: Picture: Facebook/travelrest.net

A 5-time New York Times Wirecutter winner for the Best Travel Pillow (2018-2022), the Travelrest has a tall wall of memory foam for superior neck support all flight long. A unique dip in the back lets it sit flush against headrests without pushing your head forward into an awkward position.

As it’s not height adjustable it may not fit snugly on all necks, but if you grab it off Amazon it comes with a 100% money back guarantee if it doesn’t work for you.

Best pillow for car travel

Crafty World Travel Neck Pillow, Amazon, $43.89

Crafty World Travel Neck Pillow. Picture: Amazon

Underneath the silky soft cover is a memory foam pillow that conforms to the contours of your head and neck for a perfect fit wherever you’re trying to get some rest.

Motor1 calls it out for being exceptionally soft and over 1,000 Amazon customers give it a 4.3 rating. It comes with an elastic strap to hang it off suitcases or to the back of car seats.

How we chose the best travel pillows

Our team of experienced writers and travellers spend hours researching the best travel pillows to include in articles. We find out what factors make a good product by putting our heads, necks and shoulders on the line and testing them in-the-air and analysing thousands of customer reviews.

What do travel pillows do?

If you can’t afford the flat bed bliss of business or first class, travel pillows allow you to sleep seated by cradling the neck, chin and the head.

What are the main types of travel pillows?

Most neck pillows come in one of two forms. The first is inflatable where you blow them up via a nozzle. The main advantage here is that they pack down to a much smaller space. The second variety are more rigid thanks to filling material such as beads or memory foam.

What's the best filling for travel pillows?

Many travel pillows are filled with small polystyrene beads although there is a growing trend towards memory foam pillows which can conform to the contours of your head and neck for a more comfortable and personalised fit. These pillows are generally firmer to touch and offer more structure.

Are latex pillows the same as memory foam pillows?

Latex and memory foam are both popular materials for sleeping pillows, and while they both offer some level of support and comfort, they do have their differences.

Latex is generally firmer than memory foam and has a faster bounce back time. It's also temperature-neutral, making it more ideal for sleepers who run hot.

Memory foam is a contour pillow that moulds to your shape and therefore can offer a better level of support. However, it does retain heat.

Generally, you'll find most travel pillows for planes, trains and cars are made from memory foam, while sleeping pillows such as those from The Therapeutic Pillow  are made from latex.

Do travel pillows relieve neck pain?

A good travel pillow is designed to support your head, neck and shoulders and provide you with a comfortable sleeping position while on the move. This can reduce your chances of waking up with neck pain and strain.

If you're searching for something to relieve neck pain that's already there, we suggest chatting to your doctor or chiropractor for a solution that suits your situation.

Infinity Pillow Review (Pros and Cons)

Infinity pillow

At times we are compensated for the links you click at no cost to you. Learn more about why you should trust our reviews and view our disclosure page .

If you’re looking for a new way to get some shuteye while traveling then you’ve ended up in the right place. This review is all about the Infinity Pillow , a travel pillow that has a uniquely versatile design.

After extensive testing, our favorite thing about the Infinity Pillow is that you can mold its shape to accommodate whatever space you happen to be in. Our least favorite aspect of the Infinity Pillow is that it didn’t include any instructions or diagrams, making it somewhat non-intuitive to use.

Is the Infinity Pillow the right choice for you?

After trying out the Infinity Pillow and receiving feedback from real customers, we’ve determined that the Infinity Pillow is best for frequent travelers who know that they’ll need to sleep in a variety of different places (window seat, middle seat, car, train, etc).

You should buy the Infinity Pillow if you:

  • Travel frequently
  • Want the freedom to configure your pillow the way you want
  • Suffer from neck pain and need additional support
  • Hate the feel of traditional “horse collar” travel pillows

Features of the Infinity Pillow

The Infinity is a travel pillow that is completely adjustable, meaning that you can alter its shape to better meet your sleeping needs. This pillow was designed by Amsterdam-based BCXSY and definitely has a unique appearance. It’s made out of bamboo fabric, which we felt was much softer than the material that other companies use to make their travel pillows.

It’s available at a very competitive price point – $39. This is definitely a little bit more than you would expect to spend when buying a traditional horseshoe-style travel pillow, but we feel that it’s worth the extra cost.

Now that we’ve got the basics out of the way, let’s take a deep dive and look at all of the different features of the Infinity Pillow.

Rolled up Infinity Pillow above hand

We rate the Infinity Pillow as being a soft level of firmness.

The pillow is made out of a blend of bamboo, polyester, and cotton. We found that this combination gave it an extremely soft feel. The fill seems to be properly distributed since we didn’t notice any clumping of the material while testing it out in a variety of different travel situations (airplane, car, and more).

If you like extremely firm travel pillows you might want to pass on this one. The biggest selling point of the Infinity Pillow (other than being able to mold its shape any way you want) is its softness. If standard horseshoe travel pillows are way too firm for you, then you should definitely consider the Infinity Pillow.

The Infinity Pillow is manufactured out of bamboo fabric (60% nylon, 40% bamboo rayon), lining (95% polyester, 5% cotton), and polyester filling.

We found that it held up well after rigorous use. We ran this pillow through extensive testing during common travel sleeping arrangements (airplane seat, car seat, waiting area at an airport, etc). In all of these situations, we didn’t notice any rips or any other type of damage to the pillow.

The Infinity Pillow is machine-washable at low temperature. The company recommends that you don’t tumble dry the pillow, however.

The feedback we’ve received from real customers who’ve purchased and used the Infinity Pillow confirms that this is a well-constructed product that will hold up well with normal use.

Construction

This pillow is sized at 100 x 17 cm, giving it similar dimensions as a scarf. It’s loop-shaped, which is designed to give you the ability to conform it to the perfect shape for a most common traveling situations.

The best thing about the construction of the Infinity Pillow is that it can be molded and twisted to be any shape you want it to. Even though it’s an extremely soft pillow it still provides a lot of head and neck support. This can be attributed to the materials that Infinity used to construct this pillow: bamboo, cotton, and polyester. The bamboo and cotton give this pillow that super-soft feel, while the polyester fill adds some extra support.

Temperature control

Maintaining a cool body temperature is one of the most important components of sleep hygiene , the best practices you should follow if you want to get a full night of refreshing, restorative sleep.

The soft bamboo and cotton fabric helps make this pillow extremely breathable, even when you have it twisted and wrapped around your head while you’re wedged into a tiny economy class airline seat. We never once woke up from overheating, and we weren’t covered in sweat when we finally woke up after our flight.

Since this pillow conforms to your body shape without allowing you to sink in too deeply, it allows a greater degree of airflow and helps to push heat away from your body. Obviously if you’re using a travel pillow you’re most likely sleeping in a cramped space, so preventing overheating is definitely a priority. When it comes to temperature regulation, the Infinity Pillow definitely delivers.

What sizes and colors are available?

The Infinity Pillow is only available in one size. It weighs in at .55 kg, the dimensions are 20 x 14 x 14 cm, and the pillow size is 100 x 17 cm.

The Infinity Pillow is available in the following colors:

Since it’s a considered a “premium” travel pillow, the Infinity is going to be slightly more expensive than what you’re used to. In our opinion, the extra cost is justified. If you’re on a really tight budget, you might want to pass on this pillow and invest in a standard horseshoe travel pillow instead. But if you have cash and want to invest in your own comfort, the extra price is more than worth it.

How much does the Infinity Pillow cost?

  • Infinity Pillow – $39
  • Bamboo Sleep Mask – $15
  • Travel Case for Infinity Pillow – $8.15

We couldn’t find any information about a manufacturer’s warranty for the Infinity Pillow. We reached out to the company for additional information and we will update this section once we know more.

Care and maintenance

It’s important to take care of your pillow if you want to extend its lifespan. Fortunately Infinity has made their pillow extremely easy to clean .

An unconventional take on a travel pillow that adds plenty of ways to wear and add cushion at home or during your travels. for what it lacks in compactness and portability, it makes up for versatile comfort..

  • Works in more ways than a typical travel pillow
  • comfortable cushioning to use at home or during travel

HUZI INFINITY TRAVELL PILLOW NAVY

The infinite loop design may look unique, however, the Infinity Travel Pillow is one of the best kinds of travel essentials you could have. It provides great comfort in many aspects of travelling, especially in awkward positions as it twists, turns and folds to adapt itself for plushy comforts.

While it isn’t the most space-saving travel pillow out there, it rolls into a more travel-friendly size you can sling around, and offers greater flexibility to how you may want to use it whether you’re on a plane, in the airport, on a coach seat or sleeping on a bed.

Unlooping the infinity travel pillow.

infinity travel pillow australia

The Infinity Travel Pillow comes wrapped in on itself, creating a circular, kind of mesmerising look. The pillow is held together with a bamboo fabric that acts as a strap. You can choose to wrap it rolled into a wheel or folded on its side, both options work and are still travel-friendly.

As for taste, you’ll find it in four colours: Burgundy, Tan, Navy and Grey . The bamboo fabric consists of 60% nylon, 40% bamboo rayon, the filling is made up of polyester and lining 95% polyester, and 5% cotton.

While it comes with the bamboo strap, there’s an optional travel case made of the same bamboo fabric where you can house it inside and a luggage pass-through/ handle for better transportation. It’s reasonably priced and I do recommend the travel case to keep it clean and easier to handle. You can fold and flatten it away so it doesn’t take up any space when not in use too.

Infinite ways to wear.

infinity travel pillow australia

I first thought it might be quite unwieldy to wear, considering the quite thick padding (which is a good thing for comfort). There are 8 suggested ways I can wear the Infinity Travel Pillow so I proceeded to get a hang of each one by one. A little bemused in the beginning, after a bit of time I quickly got the hang of folding, twisting, turning and looping the infinite design in ways that really did add a lot of comfort. Now, it’s effortless to do and when you get to experimenting with all the ways it can give you extra support, padding and cushioning, it shows its true practicality.

I’m wearing it in all-around (general) comfort mode, useful when sitting on a chair or against a wall. Whether you’re sitting at home or travelling, it gives a nice, plush cushion around the neck that is thickly padded enough to rest your head on, reducing the strain and support. It’s not much different style-wise than a snood if you’ve ever heard of that, just more comfier thanks to the bamboo fabric.

It doesn’t irritate the skin, is smooth and gentle against the face. The pillow measures 100 x 17cm and compacts down to 20 x 14 x 14 cm rolled up. The shape and profile mean it plays nicely with other travel accessories you may want to use at the same time like a blanket and together with the Infinity Travel Bamboo Sleep Mask for exceptional sleep.

Don’t hold back at the desk.

infinity travel pillow australia

It can also be useful if you need a little break at work or have just been working yourself a little too hard and need a quick nap, the desk pillow adds that plumpiness and cushioning we tend to crave when resting our head on the table.

Now you have one. Wrap it however you like – I like to let my arms pass through the loop and let my head rest sideways. You could also fold it flat into a makeshift traditional pillow. It makes a great deal of a difference compared to not using anything, that just might give you more energy when you wake up.

It’s a little more fiddly than a normal pillow, but while the Infinity Travel Pillow is much more versatile and adaptable in situations normal pillows just can’t handle well, I can overlook the few extra seconds it takes to bring it together for that plushy cloud feeling against my head.

Effortless sleep.

infinity travel pillow australia

Find yourself sleeping on the couch of a friend’s or maybe a row of chairs at the airport lounge. I’m sure you can relate. Window pillow mode was the most natural and comfortable position I regularly found myself using, providing that extra cushioning for the head and my hand slung upwards without any effort.

It cradles long or short arms nicely without the feeling of hands slipping away from you; instead, all settles so you can rest. The main scenario is sitting in the airplane, window side where it’s awkward to get yourself really settled in. Too distant to really lay your head against the side that it strains your neck. This is a real saver if you’ve struggled previously.

When I think about the Infinity Travel Pillow, it’s one of the most versatile pillows I’ve come across that tries to do many things at once. But by design, it truly offers comfort in all travelling scenarios without any real compromise or the feeling that it suffers from doing too much. It offers comfort in all ways superbly.

Wider pain point support.

infinity travel pillow australia

A great example of this is the back cushion or duo comfort position. Travel pillows usually only benefit around the neck and head, however, the Infinity Travel Pillow supports even the upper back, lower back and to some extent the eyes and ears.

In the case of the lower back, both arms through and let it wrap behind you. Sat down, it reinforces the lumbar region with double cushioning. The pull from the arm wrap offers solid support and comfort.

But my favourite is the duo comfort, which supports both the lower back and neck. Wrap one side of the loop behind your lower back and the other over your shoulders and behind your neck. It’s lightweight, soft and easy to wear sat down and usable even while walking too. May look a little odd but as for comfort, I’d happily wear this while transiting and waiting for my flight.

I just love how adaptable the Infinity Travel Pillow is, one that I underestimated until I finally got to try it in real life. I even sleep in bed with the Infinity Travel Pillow duo comfort mode together with the bamboo sleep mask and can sleep right away.. It’s not just during travels, but even the cooler bamboo fabric and soft wrap help during the warm summer indoors.

Final verdict.

infinity travel pillow australia

If you’re willing to forego a little compactness and size, the Infinity Travel Pillow is a magnificent travel pillow at an affordable price. The wider application I find myself using the Infinity Travel Pillow compared to others I own is indisputable. The navy colour is elegant looking in person so I have no qualms using this while travelling and the infinite design is pure genius.

It’s a little bigger than I’d like to pack but the fact it can downsize well and has a slim profile flattened out makes that easy to overcome for all of the comfort performance it gives me. Even though I’d like to see the bamboo travel case included, I do recommend pairing it with the infinity pillow as it becomes luggage and travel-friendly while keeping the bamboo fabric away from airborne dust and such while transiting.

At £35 / $39 USD / HKD 299 / €40 the premium price is justified and well worth it. It offers usage outside of conventional travel pillows that are left until you travel, whereas the Infinity Travel Pillow is versatile for use in your everyday lifestyle.

You’ll find a lot of comfort and support from its clever, intuitive design and high-quality bamboo fabric to enjoy for many years to come. While travel pillows are limited in their use thanks to generic designs, the infinite loop design means you’ll find it an essential companion you won’t want to leave behind… or be without.

This Travel Pillow Makes Flying Across the Atlantic with a Toddler an Easier Feat

infinity travel pillow australia

Until recently, I’d envied only two kinds of travel pillows . One was the exorbitant cashmere model I was shown at a glossy travel magazine. (Actually, a cashmere bag that you fill with stuff to transform into a pillow .) In that same group was a glorious miniature bed pillow of Canadian white goose down, which I was gifted while working at the same magazine. The second kind of travel pillow was a cheapo made to look like a zebra or a puppy or a pig, and it curled around a fellow passenger’s neck on a long haul for which I’d inevitably — and stupidly — packed no travel pillow. Still, they seemed like too much hassle. Even the goose feathers.

Then I had a kid, however; and sometimes we fly from France to Florida and in reverse, just us. After the first such trips — during which time my daughter slept not at all — I went into the worst migraines of my life: two-day attacks that saw me lurching over the toilet as if poisoned. (I hadn’t known that stress together with sleep deprivation and muscle tension could do that .)

So, this December, before we embarked again, I resolved to do whatever I could to craft a situation onboard in which my 2-year-old and I might pull a Goodnight Moon . For her, that meant ridable toddler luggage that converts a plane seat into bed; for me, it meant neck support in the form of a travel pillow.

Huzi Infinity Pillow in Navy

[Editor’s note: The terracotta shade will ship mid-February.]

After Googling all over the place, and getting distracted by Emilio Pucci (dry-clean-only) offerings, I found the Infinity Pillow on Amazon. I figured its Möbius-loop-like design rendered it more wieldy. It did, and I’d also accidentally found the ideal travel pillow. I chose one in attractive “terra-cotta.”

Designed by the Amsterdam-based cooperative BCXSY , the Infinity is sewn from soft and anti-bacterial nylon bamboo that manages to always feel clean and just the right temp. It’s stuffed with a plushy microfiber that bounces back. Basically, the pillow is a noise-canceling puff coat that you can wind around your neck and/or over your eyes, or prop behind your back for lumbar support. I laundered and slept with it in bed when we got in — that’s how comfortable it is. Into the bargain, it turns out that the Infinity is super for kids.

I ordered my toddler one of her own, since she stole mine on the outbound flights and snoozed in it like a nest. (She’s onto something: Infinitys and Bedboxes go together like PB&J.) Generally, she seems to accord a magical “fairy ring” quality to this fluffy circle, as if, once she’s thrown it over her, she’s staked some space in which things are pretty good. I have to admit, it kind of has that effect on me too.

Travel in Comfort: The Best Travel Pillows of 2023

Hey there! Just a quick heads up that some of the links on this page are affiliate links. That means if you click on them and make a purchase, I may earn a commission, but it won’t cost you anything extra. These links help me keep this site up and running.

Whether for work or adventure, the thrill of travelling is incomparable. But, it is fun only until you realise the agony of cramped seats, screaming babies, lack of space and the never-ending search for a comfortable position. And if, by chance, you manage to fall asleep, you’ll wake up feeling like you just went 12 rounds with Rocky Balboa, thanks to the neck cramps that leave your head stuck in a boxing stance.

Don’t worry, fellow wanderer, we have the solution to all your travel woes: travel pillows! The ultimate travel companion that will help you sleep tight and wake bright on the go.

Whether you’re a die-hard fan of Top Gun Maverick and wish to spend travel time in the air, or you’re more of a Fast & Furious type who loves the open road, we’ve got you covered. Because no matter what kind of traveller you are, there’s a travel pillow out there that’s perfect for you.

How to Choose a Travel Pillow?

Choosing a travel pillow that is perfect for you is really important. It’s like picking the right wand in Harry Potter – you need the one that suits you best to perform your magic. A good travel pillow will keep you comfortable, well-rested, and shielded from deadly neck and back pain.

Here are some significant factors to consider when buying a travel pillow:

  • Types of Travel Pillows

When selecting a travel pillow, it’s essential to explore the wide varieties available to choose the one that works best for you. Let’s look at some of the most commonly used types of travel pillows:

  • Memory Foam Travel Pillows are like a warm embrace for your neck, conforming to your body shape to give individualised support and comfort. They’re ideal for extended flights and long road trips, especially if you suffer from neck stiffness or discomfort when travelling.
  • Inflatable Travel Pillows are the chameleons of the travel pillow world – they’re lightweight, small, and easy to inflate and deflate, making them an excellent choice for people looking to travel light. While not as fluffy as other pillows, they provide enough support and are perfect for plane travel.
  • Microbead Travel Pillows are a bit more unique as they are packed with tiny supporting beads that align to the shape of your body for a personalised sensation. They’re versatile and compact, making them convenient to transport, although some users have found them less supportive than other travel pillows.
  • Microfibre Travel Pillows are exceptionally soft and velvety, making them ideal for snuggling on long flights. While they may not provide as much support as other travel pillows, they more than makeup for it by offering pure comfort. Furthermore, they are lightweight and easy to pack, allowing you to bring them on all your trips without weighing down your luggage.

Just like Iron Man depends upon his suit to keep him safe and comfortable, you also need adequate neck support to ensure a comfortable trip. Without proper neck support, you could end up with a painful kink in your neck, which can put a damper on your travel plans.

Choosing a travel pillow with adequate neck support is critical for avoiding pain and remaining relaxed during lengthy journeys. Whether you want a memory foam pillow that moulds to the contour of your neck or an inflatable pillow that can be altered to the firmness you require, make sure it provides the support you need.

When you’re travelling, feeling comfortable is the key. That’s why choosing a travel pillow that offers maximum comfort is essential. Just like Aladdin relied on his genie, you can rely on the right travel pillow to provide you with the comfort and support you need to make your journey enjoyable and memorable. Whether you’re on a long flight or a road trip, a good travel pillow can make all the difference.

  • Washability

When it comes to choosing the best travel pillow for you, washability is an essential factor. You wouldn’t wear the same shirt for days without cleaning it, so why would you use a travel pillow that can’t be readily cleaned? A washable travel pillow might make all the difference if you spill anything on it or just want to freshen it up after a long ride.

  • Portability

Remember how Harry Potter had to sleep on the train to Hogwarts? Consider how much simpler his journey would have been if he had brought a portable travel pillow!

A lightweight, compact travel pillow that fits neatly into your baggage or backpack may make a big difference in ensuring a smooth trip. So, instead of a bulky cushion, consider a portable travel pillow and enjoy the flexibility and pleasure of genuine travel companionship!

Now that you know how to buy a travel pillow that is perfect for you, we have compiled a list of the best travel pillows to help you choose from.

I actually slept!

Comfortable and very useful. Hated those around the neck pillows and the head bobbing and this erased that. Got some actual sleep on a flight for the first time.

Love this product!

This product made sitting upright in a coach airline seat comfortable! Would definitely recommend to anyone who has a plane right and must sit in coach.

JS Newman (Amazon customer)

Game changer/Best travel pillow

It is so comfortable and I actually fell asleep in the middle seat of the plane! I also used it on a long car ride and it was awesome to help me feel comfortable with my neck supported. Game changer!!

Slept on international flights

I usually can’t sleep for long on international flights, but with this product, ear plugs and an eye mask, I slept for the majority of my flights to and from India (I live in the Midwest).

This is by far the best travel bag I've ever had!

Leroy Holloway

This was the best trip I have ever been on thanks to this great product. Really good value for money. Falling asleep while traveling is always something I get nervous about because I worry about injuring my neck. This product saved me from this and I am going to make sure I pack it for every trip. This really is a must-buy for any traveller. I highly recommend it.

I am so pleased that I bought this travel-pillow for myself as I am away on business on a monthly basis. When I travel I find it hard to get into the right position for sleeping or resting. I was really grateful for this pillow as it made this the most comfortable journey that I have had in a long time. It is made out of super-soft materials and it felt really nice to just lay back in it and enjoy the journey. I will never travel again without it! A great value pillow that fits well into any of my cabin bags. The colour is very smart too which is important to me as I am a professional person. I love this pillow. So cozy!

The 8 best neck pillows for travel.

Avoid a literal pain in the neck with these expert-approved travel pillows.

The Best Neck Pillows for Travel

Woman using red Cabeau Evolution S3 Travel Pillow in window seat of plane.

The Cabeau Evolution S3 Travel Pillow is one of the best neck pillows for travel.

Just like the pillow you use at home , the best neck pillow for travel is the one that makes you feel most comfortable, allowing you to relax, rest and ultimately fall asleep on the go. The difference, however, is that a travel pillow is typically used when sitting up, which means it needs to provide enough support to keep your head from bobbing.

Based on recommendations from travel experts and advice from physicians, these are the best neck pillows for travel.

Best Overall: Cabeau Evolution S3

Best affordable: mvloc travel pillow, best for long flights: trtl travel pillow, best multipurpose: huzi infinity pillow, best inflatable: sunany inflatable travel pillow, best silk: slip jet setter travel pillow, best for backpacking: marchway ultralight inflatable camping pillow, best for kids: bcozzy double support neck pillow.

Cabeau Evolution S3 Travel Pillow in gray and infographic against white background.

Frequent travelers praise the design of the Cabeau Evolution S3, which is made of a special dual-density memory foam. "My pillow at home is made with memory foam so it's like bringing a piece of home on my travels," says travel blogger Jasmine Cheng of The Wandering Girl . "The sides are also raised, which prevents my head from moving when I'm sleeping." Travelers also appreciate the patented seat strap system that attaches the pillow to a seat or chair headrest as well as the slim flattened back, both of which prevent the head from bobbing.

A handy storage pouch on the side of the pillow allows you to keep your earbuds or other small items close by, and the pillow comes with a clasp that attaches to carry-on luggage . The removable pillow cover, which comes in a variety of colors, is machine-washable. What's more, this travel pillow can be stored in an included carry bag that condenses it to half its size.

Price: $39.99 or less Shop now: Amazon | Cabeau

Travelers appreciate the support (and the price tag) of this memory foam travel pillow. An adjustable rope lock allows you to secure the pillow to your neck for maximum support and comfort. The breathable and machine-washable cloth exterior prevents overheating. This travel pillow also comes with earplugs and an eye mask for ultimate relaxation.

Price: $29.99 or less Shop now: Amazon

The patented design of the Trtl Travel Pillow – with a hidden internal neck support surrounded by soft, hypoallergenic fleece – makes it a favorite among travelers, particularly for long flights. "Something about it just hits right in a travel accessory category where nothing previously worked for me," explains Meaghan Clawsie, luxury travel advisor at Elated Escapes . "I no longer have any back or neck pain when resting on long-haul flights." Simply wrap the pillow around your neck like a scarf, secure it in place with its built-in fastener and rest your head on the support.

If you tend to overheat easily, there's also the Trtl Pillow Cool , made with Tencel fibers to keep you at a comfortable temperature; a mesh panel makes the pillow particularly breathable as well. Both pillows are machine-washable.

If you're not sold on the classic U-shaped neck pillows for travel, consider this snake-like option instead. Able to be twisted into a variety of positions, the versatile Huzi Infinity Pillow provides whatever support feels best – even if that means resting your head on the tray table for a bit. You can also wear it around your neck like a scarf for neck and back comfort (even when you're not snoozing), use it as an eye mask, or drape it over your head if you get cold or want to block out noise.

Travelers love the pillow's bamboo fabric, describing it as soft, smooth and cool. Since it's filled with polyester, the whole pillow can be tossed in the washing machine , unlike its memory foam counterparts. The Infinity Pillow is available in nearly a dozen different colors, including gray, navy and pink.

Sunany Inflatable Travel Pillow in blue against white background.

Travelers love the H-shaped design of this inflatable pillow because it allows for use in multiple directions and supports both sides of the head and neck with a flat back. A removable hood on the pillow is a bonus: It encourages a cozy feel and prevents cold drafts from too much air conditioning. For optimal comfort, it is recommended to inflate the pillow about 80% to 90%.

A pocket for your earbud case on this travel pillow provides convenient access for listening to music, and the removable velour cover is machine-washable. The lightweight inflatable pillow can be stored in the included waterproof drawstring bag, which can also be attached to luggage. This travel neck pillow is available in black, gray and blue.

Slip Jet Setter Travel Pillow in pink against white background.

Travel pillows don't get softer than this luxurious new option by Slip. The Jet Setter Travel Pillow is made with the highest-grade long fiber mulberry silk, which helps to prevent skin creases and bedhead. It also comes with a carrying case with handles. The Jet Setter Travel Pillow is available in three prints and a pretty solid blush color.

Price: $99 or less Shop now: Amazon | Slip

While you can often bring your pillow from home for tent camping, backpacking requires something more lightweight, such as this inflatable option by Marchway. "An inflatable pillow is a game-changer when it comes to backpacking, and an ultralight pillow can't be beat," says Leilani Osmundson , digital producer for travel at U.S. News. "The Marchway pillow fits the bill: It's comfortable, packable and extremely lightweight." This pillow is designed for both back and side sleepers, and doubles as a lumbar support for everyday travels and needs. Once it's deflated, you can machine-wash the cover before folding the pillow into an included drawstring bag.

BCOZZY Double Support Neck Pillow in pink with blue hearts design against white background.

Courtesy of BCOZZY

The BCOZZY neck pillow is ideal for all travelers – including kids, with small sizes for youngsters between 3 and 7 years old, and medium options for ages 8 and 12. Travelers like the ergonomic design of the patented pillow, which supports the head and neck by propping the chin up. Overlapping pillow arms, which wrap around the neck and under the chin, can be tightened based on the level of support you need.

If you or your child is a side sleeper, fold the pillow in half, double up the sides and place it on your shoulder, leaning your head to the side. An elevated side option allows you to overlap the pillow arms on top of each other and rotate it 90 degrees to the side for double support for the neck and chin.

This travel pillow is available in a variety of colors and patterns, including light blue and pink hearts. A snap strap attaches the included travel bag to your child's luggage , and you can throw the pillow in the washing machine after your trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Experts agree a supportive pillow is essential for travel. "The biggest issue many travelers experience when sleeping on a plane is that the seats don't recline enough," explains Dr. Alex Dimitriu, a sleep/wake and performance specialist who is dual board certified in psychiatry and sleep medicine. "This often results in the head being just on the brink of tipping forward – which is not a comfortable sleeping position. Because of this insufficient recline, it is important to keep padding behind the head and neck minimal to reduce the tendency for the head to tip forward."

Most travel pillows are designed to be worn around the neck, providing enough support to prevent the head from tipping forward.

When shopping for a neck pillow for travel, experts recommend considering the following factors:

Proper head support:  What's most important is ensuring your head is supported in the right places by your travel pillow – and, in particular, not being pushed forward by excessive padding. "A good pillow would provide support for side sleeping, rather than a lot of padding behind the head, which just pushes the head forward too much," says Dimitriu.

Material: Consider both the external and internal material of the pillow:

External: Chiropractic physician Eric Smith advises to make sure the material of your travel pillow is breathable and won't subject you to an overheated sleep, since one of the main reasons for moving around a lot as you sleep is getting too hot. "When your face gets too hot on one side, even if you're sleeping, you're going to move from it because it's too warm," Smith explains.

There's no real consensus on which material is best for a cool, comfy sleep – and different people will have different preferences – so Smith's advice is to try before you fly (and don't hesitate to request a refund if your chosen pillow isn't working out).

  • Internal: Memory foam pillows tend to offer more firm support – something Smith recommends for anyone, but especially older travelers. "The majority of patients I have that get older, we actually need a more firm pillow, we need a more firm bed, we need more support," Smith says. Pillows filled with microbeads mold more to the neck and head, while inflatable pillows can be adjusted to your preferences based on how much air you use to blow them up.

A travel pillow for your neck isn't considered a carry-on or personal item (and the same generally goes for small, loose items like jackets and umbrellas). That said, it's always best to review your airline's carry-on luggage size restrictions before traveling.

A good neck pillow for travel isn't the only key to achieving a decent sleep while in transit. "From the standpoint of evolution, we're kind of hardwired to be a little bit more on high alert in those situations," explains Rebecca Robbins, an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School and scientist at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital. "We're a little bit more in fight or flight mode; our brain is subconsciously scanning the environment for threats and there are new sounds and new smells."

She recommends finding elements that are relaxing to you, which might include some of the following:

  • Travel blanket: Look for something lightweight, such as the EverSnug Travel Blanket on Amazon. This blanket comes with a carrying case, which can double as a pillow when the blanket is stored inside.
  • Essential or aromatherapy oils: Scents like lavender and peppermint can be especially calming.
  • Earplugs: Choose headphones that block some or all external noise. The Bose QuietComfort 45 Wireless Headphones are especially well rated.
  • White noise app: There are a variety of free apps, or you can try a paid option like Calm (which offers a free trial).
  • Eye mask: An eye mask like this cotton option on Amazon helps to block out the bright light on planes.

Moscow is the financial and political centre of Russia and the countries formerly comprising the Soviet Union. It has a population of around 13 million and an area of 2,511 square kilometres (970 sq mi) after an expansion in 2012. One-tenth of all Russian citizens live in the Moscow metropolitan area. Moscow is the second most populous city in Europe, after Istanbul , and has the most populous metropolitan area in Europe, with some 21 million residents. Moscow is in the UTC+3 time zone; there is no daylight saving time.

Many years since the break up of the Soviet Union, the economy has improved, and the modern era has brought upon a wide variety of construction projects, modern architecture and newer transport systems replacing the derelict ones during Soviet times.

Geography [ edit ]

Moscow is a large metropolis on the Moskva River, which bends its way through the city. The historical center is on the northern bank of the river. The other major waterway is the Yauza River, which flows into the Moskva east of the Kremlin.

Much of Moscow's geography is defined by the 3 'Ring Roads' that circle the city at various distances from the centre, roughly following the outline of the walls that used to surround Moscow. With Red Square and the Kremlin forming the very centre, the innermost ring road is the Boulevard Ring ( Bulvarnoye Koltso ), built in the 1820s where the 16th century walls used to be. It runs from the Christ the Savior Cathedral in south-west central Moscow, to the mouth of the Yauza in south-east central Moscow.

The next ring road, the Garden Ring ( Sadovoe Koltso ), derives its name from the fact that landowners near the road in Tsarist times were obligated to maintain gardens to make the road attractive. In Soviet times, the road was widened, and there are now no gardens there.

The Third Ring Road, completed in 2004, is not much use for tourists but is a heavily used motorway which absorbs a bit of Moscow's traffic. It roughly follows the outline of Kamer-Kollezhsky val , the customs boundary of Moscow in the 18th – early 20th century. The outer edge of Moscow is largely defined by the Moscow Ring Road (widely known by its abbreviation: MKAD-Moskovskaya kolcevaya avto doroga), a motorway which is 108 km (67 mi) long and encircles the entire city (similar to London's M25 and Paris' Périphérique ).

Climate [ edit ]

The climate of Moscow features warm summers and long, cold winters.

By train [ edit ]

infinity travel pillow australia

Moscow is a railway hub, with connections to all parts of Russia and far into Europe and Asia. Due to its hub status, Moscow's train stations are often crowded; trains are the usual form of intercity transport for most Russians. The stations have a reputation for being unsafe but paradoxically the threat of terrorism has improved things: security gates, policing and surveillance deter the casual thugs and villains. Guard your valuables and yourself as you would in any big city.

All long-distance trains are operated by Russian Railways and its subsidiaries, except for a few international trains with other operators. Tickets can be bought at stations or online . For domestic trains, you can show the ticket officer your online boarding pass; however, international trains require a printed ticket. There are usually ticket counters with English-speaking personnel - they may be marked as such, or the clerk may direct you to another counter if they can't cope with your English. See Russia#By train 2 for more details on travelling in Russia by train.

From Europe [ edit ]

All trains from Europe halted since 2020

Train stations in Moscow [ edit ]

Moscow has 10 train stations, 9 of which are near metro stations close to the center of Moscow. Be sure to note the station from which your train is departing, which will be indicated on the ticket, or online . Three stations ( Leningradsky , Yaroslavsky , and Kazansky ) are on one huge square, informally known as the "Three Stations' Square". A running joke among Moscow taxi drivers since the Soviet times is to be able to pick up a fare from one of them to the other, taking the unwary tourist on an elaborate ride in circles. Be prepared for enormous queues trying to enter or exit the Metro at peak times, as people are getting off or on the commuter trains.

By car [ edit ]

Many entry points to Moscow over the Ring Road and into the city feature rotating roadblocks, where teams of traffic police may stop a vehicle, especially if it is not featuring Moscow plates. You may be stopped and questioned but you'll be allowed to proceed if you have all the proper documents.

Foreign cars, especially expensive cars, might attract unwelcome attention, and there is cumbersome paperwork involved to enter Russia by car.

By boat [ edit ]

There is no scheduled passenger service to Moscow by boat; however, cruise ships do provide service to the Northern River Terminal, on the Moscow Canal near the Khimki Reservoir. The pier is not convenient to the city and it can take over 2 hours to reach the city centre by car.

A system of navigable channels and locks connects the Moskva River with the Volga River, which is further connected to the Baltic Sea , White Sea, the Azov, the Black Sea, and the Caspian Sea. In the Soviet times this allowed the official propaganda to refer to Moscow as "a port on the five seas".

By bicycle [ edit ]

Moscow is the easternmost destination of the EuroVelo cycling routes . Eurovelo Route 2 , the Capitals Route, is a 5,500 km (3,400 mi) route starting in Galway , Ireland , passing through Dublin , London , Berlin , Warsaw and Minsk before terminating in Moscow.

By metro [ edit ]

infinity travel pillow australia

The Metro is open from 05:30-01:00. Station entrances are closed at 01:00, and at this time the last trains depart from all of the termini stations. After 01:00, many locals will enter the train station using the exits, which are still open. Service on the ring line runs until 01:30, although entrances are closed at 01:00. The down escalators are also shut off at 01:00.

There is signage in the Metro stations in English and the Latin alphabet, but these signs are not everywhere. Each train carriage has a map in Latin script and there is one near the entrance to each station. Note the direction of the train before you alight. It is worth printing a map of the metro system in both Cyrillic and Latin letters to take with you.

All trains in the system have free WiFi onboard, but you will need to have a Russian phone number to get the authorization code to access the WiFi. Some of the older train cars are not climate controlled.

2 or 3 stations may be connected as transfer points but will each have a different name. There are 2 stations called Smolenskaya and 2 stations called Arbatskaya , but the station pairs are not connected to each other despite having the same name. Some of the stations are very deep underground, and transfer times between certain metro lines can take a lot of time. In the city centre, it can save time to go directly to the above-ground entrance of the line you want to take rather than to enter at a connecting station and transfer underground. On the escalators, stand on the right and walk on the left except for peak hours, when standing on the left side is also allowed.

Some of the train stations include beautiful architecture and it is worth taking a guided tour of the metro system. The most interesting stations in terms of decor are Komsomolskaya (ring line), Novoslobodskaya (ring line), Kievskaya (ring line), Kropotkinskaya (Line #1 - red), Kievskaya (Line #3 - dark blue), Arbatskaya (Line #3 - dark blue), Ploschad' Revolyutsii (Line #3 - dark blue), Mayakovskaya (Line #2 - dark green). Also look at the architecture of the ground entrance building of Arbatskaya (Line #4 - light blue) and Krasnye Vorota (Line #1 - red). History buffs may appreciate that Metro Line #1 (red) has the oldest stations, opened in 1935.

The Vorobyovy Gory Metro Station on Line #1 (red) is unique in that it is on a bridge crossing the Moscow River. This bridge also carries auto traffic road on another level. There is a beautiful view through the transparent sides of the station. A great observing point around Moscow is located nearby on Vorobyovy hills, next to the main building of Lomonosov Moscow State University.

There are a couple of unique trains operating through the system and you will be lucky if you get to ride them. Aquarelle (Watercolor) is a train that includes an art gallery. The train operates daily on Line #3 (dark blue). The Sokolniki Retro Train is a train modeled after the original 1930s trains and it occasionally is placed into service, usually around a major anniversary of the metro system.

The metro is relatively safe, although pickpockets are a problem, as they are in any environment where a lot of people are pressed together. Opportunistic petty crime, such as snatching someone's mobile phone and jumping out just as the doors are closing, is also commonplace. Take the usual precautions at night when gangs of inebriated teenagers may look for an excuse to beat someone up. There is no train guard or conductor, so the first car near the driver may be the safest. Every car is equipped with an intercom to the driver's cabin; they are beige boxes with a grill and a black button near doors, and mostly work, unless visibly vandalized.

By tram [ edit ]

There are several tram routes, although trams are not common in the city centre.

By monorail [ edit ]

Moscow Monorail is a 4.7 km (2.9 mi) monorail line with 6 stations. It is slower, less frequent, and has shorter operating hours when compared with the metro (every 30 min, 08:00-20:00). However, the view is picturesque. It is useful to get to the Ostankino Tower, or to get to the VDNKh exhibition centre from Metro Line #9 (silver). Interchanges between Moscow Metro and Monorail is free, no additional fee will be charged.

By hop-on-hop-off bus [ edit ]

The hop-on-hop-off bus is a convenient way for tourists to see the major sights quickly and efficiently. The buses feature English-speaking guides to answer any questions. A 1 day pass costs $24 for adults and $15 for children.

See [ edit ]

Do [ edit ].

Moscow has many attractions, but many of them are not friendly to a non-Russian-speaker. English-language newspapers like The Moscow Times , Element [dead link] , Moscow News and others can help to navigate towards English-language friendly attractions and services.

Circuses [ edit ]

Theatres [ edit ].

  • Bolshoi Theatre , one of the oldest and best known ballet and opera companies in the world.

Learn [ edit ]

infinity travel pillow australia

Moscow remains the educational center of Russia and the former USSR. There are 222 institutes of higher education, including 60 state universities & 90 colleges. Some of these offer a wide-spectrum of programs, but most are centered around a specific field. This is a hold-over from the days of the USSR, when Sovietwide there were only a handful of wide-spectrum "universities" and a large number of narrow-specialization "institutes" (mostly in Moscow & St.Petersburg). Moscow offers some of the best business/management, science, & arts schools in the world. Moscow is also a popular destination for foreign students to learn Russian.

Work [ edit ]

You will need a work visa which is not an easy process. The visa needs to be arranged well in advance of traveling. It is possible to work in Moscow, you just need to find a good company to support you. The main obstacle for many foreigners will be a mandatory Russian language exam required to obtain a work permit.

Shopping malls [ edit ]

Large shopping malls are common near metro stations.

Tipping [ edit ]

For information on tipping in restaurants, see Russia#Eat .

Ethnic food [ edit ]

Authentic ethnic food from countries of the nearby Caucasus ( Azerbaijan , Georgia , Armenia ) is common in Moscow. Japanese food, including sushi, rolls, tempura, and steakhouses are very popular in Moscow. Other Asian cuisines including Vietnamese, Thai, and Chinese are becoming increasingly more common.

Budget [ edit ]

Street food [ edit ].

Free-standing kiosks serving sausages, meat pies, or kebobs are plentiful, although the origins of the meat served is questionable and the food has been known to occasionally make people sick.

Muscovites are also fond of their ice cream, consumed in any weather, even in the dead of winter, cheap and usually of superior quality; kiosks can be found all over the center and near all Metro stations.

Foodcourts 2.0 [ edit ]

This term is used in articles by local food critics: since 2016, several special food courts were opened with independent and small food chains, for those people who get bored of McDonald's-like food. They offer a wider choice of cuisines.

Clubs [ edit ]

Nightlife in Moscow is bustling, intense and exciting. It starts quite late; it's common for the headliners to start at 02:00-02:00. Most noticeable are areas near Solyanka street and Krasniy Oktyabr' place. At summer time a lot of clubs opening open-air terraces called "verandas". Most of clubs in Moscow are very picky of who they let in, so make sure you have a positive attitude and dress up if you are going to a fancy club.

Gazgolder [dead link] (not far from Kremlin) is among the best.

Cafes [ edit ]

Moscow has several café chains with great coffee including Coffeemania and Coffee Bean [dead link] . Moscow also has a good selection of tea saloons. High-quality infusion teas such as Newby, are widely available in cafes, both in packets and loose.

Asking to add boiling water to the tea you ordered earlier is a practice that some cafes don't welcome, but normally it's acceptable.

Sleep [ edit ]

Stay safe [ edit ].

Moscow enjoys a relatively low crime rate.

infinity travel pillow australia

Drunk people are the most likely sources of problems. In the past years, lots of policemen were corrupt, and it was best to avoid them. Nowadays Moscow has a Tourist Police force, whose officers are able to speak foreign languages and help tourists. Police officers are equipped with body-cameras.

It is preferable to avoid some parts of the outer districts of Moscow, especially in the south. Some of those areas are notorious for gopniks (drunkards notorious for muggings and starting fights with strangers, and will do so seemingly unprovoked), who normally hang out in sparse residential areas and in industrial zones. The same problems can be witnessed in the surrounding regions and in other Russian cities as well.

While traveling in Moscow, as in the rest of Russia, you should always have your passport with you. If you look non-white, your papers may get checked more often than otherwise. The police may demand to see your papers to check if you have been registered within 7 business days of your arrival into Moscow. Always remember that if you stay in a hotel then you are automatically registered and will be handed a confirmation paper at a time of check-in, so don't worry in this case. The police are usually looking for migrants from Central Asia and unless you fit this profile, you are unlikely to be questioned.

Women should take caution walking alone late at night since they may receive unwanted attention from drunk men. Women should also stay clear of large companies of men in front of bars, restaurants, etc. It is best to walk with a friend if possible.

Streets can become very slippery in winter. Wear shoes or, even better, boots with decent grip to prevent twisted ankles. Ice patches can be hard to spot. A waterproof raincoat is also sensible.

Traffic is poorly handled, and vehicle accident rates are very high.

If you need help with translation, ask students or pupils: younger people are more likely to be able to help you than the older generations.

Connect [ edit ]

For information on using telephones and buying SIM cards in Russia, see Russia#Connect .

Mobile Internet is quite affordable in Russia, but you have to buy Russian SIM-card first.

Wireless Internet [ edit ]

Moscow Metro has Wi-Fi in all trains. It is ad-supported.

Mosgortrans has Wi-Fi spots on every bus, trolleybus and tram. Also sometimes you can find Wi-Fi spot on a public transport stop.

Beeline Wi-Fi [dead link] operates the largest network of both paid and free Wi-Fi access points. If there is a charge, you can pay online via credit card.

There is a large network of free Wi-Fi hotspots in the city centre; check your device in the middle of a busy area and you may find one.

Many cafes and restaurants offer Wi-Fi - ask for password. Most bookstores offer free Wi-Fi, including "Dom Knigi" on New Arbat Street or "Respublika" bookstore on Tverskaya near Mayakovskaya Metro Station.

Some establishments that offer free Wi-Fi may require you to verify an authorization code sent to a Russian phone number before gaining access, but for the most part, foreign numbers also work as of 2016.

Cope [ edit ]

Embassies [ edit ].

Moscow is one of the global diplomatic capitals, competing with Berlin , Brussels , Beijing , Paris , London , Tokyo and Washington D.C. . Most of the world's countries have their embassies in the city.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

infinity travel pillow australia

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

infinity travel pillow australia

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

infinity travel pillow australia

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

infinity travel pillow australia

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

infinity travel pillow australia

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

infinity travel pillow australia

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

infinity travel pillow australia

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

infinity travel pillow australia

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

infinity travel pillow australia

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

infinity travel pillow australia

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

infinity travel pillow australia

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

infinity travel pillow australia

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

infinity travel pillow australia

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

infinity travel pillow australia

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

infinity travel pillow australia

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!

Gay Moscow Moscow City Guide

Moscow invariably hits the headlines for all the wrong reasons. And though the Russian capital isn’t particularly LGBTQ-friendly (Vladimir Putin’s annual shirtless photoshoot notwithstanding), we don’t think you should miss out on the most intriguing of Moscow points of interest because of it. Homosexuality is legal, although a vaguely-worded 2013 law prohibits the promotion of ‘non-traditional’ relationships. As such, gay travellers are advised against overt displays of their sexuality. That said, the vast majority of visits remain trouble-free, even for visitors who frequent the city’s less-than-secret gay bar and club scene.

The best hotels in Moscow

The historic exterior of the Hotel Metropol , facing the internationally-celebrated Bolshoi Theatre and close to many of the other main things to do in Moscow, is nothing compared to its sumptuous interiors. Its decor recalls the no-expense-spared philosophy of the grand imperial era that climaxed at the turn of the 1900s. Marble detailing, decorative plasterwork, and a breathtaking stained-glass roof enclosing the vast dining hall is the result. Though the hotel is large – with 365 rooms, there is a different bed for every day of the year – each room is uniquely shaped in the art deco style, ensuring a personal feel. The rooms at the Russo-Balt Hotel are also individually decorated, but in the earlier art nouveau style of swirling floral motifs, blown-glass chandeliers, and richly carved woods. Stand out features include a pillow menu and breakfasts which incorporate produce from the hotel’s private farm.

Rooms at the PR Myasnitsky Boutique Hotel have a more playful, contemporary look, combining bare brick with sleek pieces of modern furniture, all within the large public spaces of the nineteenth-century edifice. Each features a small fridge and capsule coffee machine. As a self-declared design hotel, rest assured that any stay at Akvarel Hotel will be an elegant one, with every detail considered from the moment you step across the threshold. The chic mid-century design flows effortlessly from the lobby bar and summer terrace to the rooms, each of which has been custom-styled with fanciful furnishings. A little further away, on the Third Ring Road in the Basmanny district, is the three-star Boutique Hotel Baumanskiy . The modern building features quirky in-room works of art and the offer of complimentary coffees at reception. The carpeted interiors give this stay a homely ambience, which marries well with breakfast – which is served in your room.
