Adaptive cruise control allows you to set a constant speed, but will automatically adjust itself in certain scenarios.

For example, if a slower car cuts in front of you on the road, it will automatically lower the set speed to avoid getting too close. Once the other vehicle moves out of the way, it will raise back to your set speed. 

Some adaptive cruise control systems will also slow down around tight curves, or even reduce the speed if the posted speed limit changes.

However, don’t mistake this system with “self-driving!” Adaptive cruise control still requires you to steer your vehicle, and you may need to brake manually if a car ahead of you suddenly brakes. 

As you would probably expect, adaptive cruise control is much more expensive to install than regular cruise control.

At the low end, systems cost around $500. However, the most intuitive systems can cost up to $2,500. 

How Do You Install a Cruise Control System?

If you choose to install your cruise control system yourself, you’ll need to follow the correct steps to ensure it’s done properly. Here is everything you need to do while installing cruise control on your vehicle. 

• Before unhooking your battery, put your key in the accessory power position to unlock your steering wheel. Turn it so that at least one of the airbag screws is facing the floor.
• Next, unhook your battery. Leave it unhooked for at least 10 minutes to ensure all the power is released from the airbags. 
• Now you’ll need to move your steering wheel airbag to allow for proper access. Unscrew the airbag bolts, then lift them away at least six inches. Make sure to unhook the airbag cable connection carefully, and don’t pull out any additional wires or cables.
• Once the airbag has been removed, you’ll have to look inside the wheel to find the white cruise control connector. This is normally close to the horn. If you can’t find it, consult your owner’s manual.
• Place the cruise control switch and attach all wires as directed.
• Now, you can mount the switch securely, using all the included brackets and screws. Once you’ve mounted it, reattach your airbag and put it back inside the steering wheel.
• Tighten all the steering wheel airbag bolts.
• If your kit includes a master switch, install it near the steering column. 
• If your vehicle is not cruise control ready, you’ll need to install the cruise control computer. The location varies by vehicle, but it’s often located near the driver’s side kick panel.
•  Attach any remaining parts required, such as a sub-zero unit, additional switch, or cruise actuator. 
• The last step is to calibrate your vehicle’s computer. This can be a complicated process. Consult online guides for your specific vehicle, or go to the dealer and have them do it for you. 

Although this process may seem complicated, it’s generally not considered difficult to do. Typically, installing this system will take you no longer than an hour.

Can You Install Cruise Control on a Manual Transmission?

If you have a manual transmission vehicle, you’ll be happy to hear that it’s still possible to install cruise control. However, it will be less flexible and typically requires extra sensors, such as a clutch disengagement switch.

How to Install Cruise Control in Your Car

You may think that it is difficult to install cruise control into your car. However, it is not that difficult and you can install cruise control in under an hour. There are kits available that will contain everything you need to install an aftermarket cruise control. The vast majority of vehicles will already have cruise control or are ready for the installation of cruise control.

Step 1 - Unhook the Battery

As with anything connected to the power source, it is important to unhook the battery cable. You need to leave the battery unhooked for about 10 minutes so the power is released from the airbag system. You will need to position your key to the accessory power position so you can have the steering wheel unlock. If the power is off then most steering wheels will not turn. Turn the steering wheel enough so that one of the airbag screws is facing the floor.

Step 2 - Move the Airbag

Unscrew the bolts that secure the airbag and lift this away by about 6 inches. You will be restricted by the cables and wires that connect to the airbag. These connections are very important and you need to be careful you do not pull anything out. Unhook the airbag cable connection and be very careful as it contains a small amount of explosives.

Step 3 - Find the Cruise Control Connection

Inside the wheel should be a white connector that is for the cruise control. This is normally close to the horn mechanism. If you are having difficulties finding the cable, then check with your vehicle manual. You may also need to cut through some mounting hardware in order to place the cruise control switch. This will depend on the vehicle. Attach all the wires.

Step 4 - Mount the Switch

It is very important that the switch is mounted securely. You will have brackets and several mounting screws. Once this is mounted you can reattach the airbag and place it back in the steering wheel . Tighten the bolts and if you have a master switch you can install this near the steering column.

Step 5 - Install a Cruise Control Computer

If your car needs a new system or is not cruise control ready, then you will also need to install the cruise control computer. Normally this is near the driver’s side kick panel, though the location can vary depending on the vehicle. Most cars will have studs where the computer smoothly fits over. There is normally a harness specifically for the computer.

Step 6 - Add Other Parts as Needed

You may also need a sub-zero unit and an additional switch. This is normally by the engine bay and is held in place using three bolts. You also may need a cruise actuator and additional cruise switches. It is best to determine which parts you need first to ensure you have everything you need for the cruise control.

Step 7 - Calibrating the Computer

Setting the program for the computer is fairly complicated. Particularly for those that do not understand programming. You may be able to get the manufacturer to calibrate the computer. There are many online guides that can provide you with the details you need to calibrate the computer properly.

Wiring harness: Most kits come with a wiring harness, complete with colored wires. Instructions will guide you to wire the hot and cold sides of your brake switch. Other wires connect to the ignition “run” contact and ground. A significant step is to splice into a Vehicle Speed Signal (VSS) wire. Most cars of the past 20 years have a VSS. Types of aftermarket cruise controls

Factory fit, steering wheel or dash mounted options

Cruise control is typically an optional extra for many vehicles when they are purchased. Although in many cases the manufacturers still include the capability for cruise control to be added as an aftermarket item by replacing existing switch plates and/or connecting to the wiring circuits of the vehicle. Either way it is possible to add cruise control to classic or modern vehicles including cars, motorcycles, vans and 4WD’s. You can choose from different switch types and sometimes the type of vehicle will dictate the most relevant choice for the application.

An owner of a classic sports car that wants to maintain an original look for the interior of the vehicle may opt for a stand-alone dash-mounted unit that can be concealed or easily removed. Motorcycle owners can have cruise control fitted to the handlebar of the bike with buttons within reach of their fingers.

Aftermarket cruise control install types

Different vehicle types use different methods of cruise control

Every vehicle has a slightly different design but manufacturers will use a few different methods of enabling a driver to control the throttle inputs. Older cars require a cable to be pulled, modern vehicles may have a motor that moves & more recent vehicles work with drive by wire using electronics. 

We have access to a wide range of cruise control products that can suit any type of vehicle set up to make it easy to get aftermarket cruise control installed.

Vacuum Cruise Controls are an easy way of installing a Cruise Control. They simply connect to a Vacuum source off the engine and the Vacuum Actuator draws the cable back which pulls the throttle on as required.

Electric Cruise Controls are very similar to the Vacuum type with the exception that the Actuator is an Electric Stepper motor. When the vehicle’s speed is selected the Electric motor winds the throttle back as required.

DRIVE BY WIRE

DBW controls interface to the electronic throttle system of modern cars. The cruise control simply supplies the correct signals to increase or decrease the throttle position as required.

Control the speed of your classic, muscle or sports cars

Believe it or not governors in some shape or form date back to the 17th century and was used on old steam engines. These days cruise control (sometimes known as speed control) is a system that automatically controls the speed of a car, truck or motorcycle. The system is a servo mechanism that takes over the throttle of the car to maintain a steady speed as set by the driver. Speed control was used in early automobiles such as the Wilson-Pilcher in the early 1900s with a lever on the steering column so the driver could set the speed to be maintained by the engine.

Over the years this evolved and what is considered ‘modern cruise control’ was invented in 1948 by mechanical engineer Ralph Teetor. Apparently he got the idea out of the frustration of riding in a car driven by his lawyer, who kept speeding up and slowing down as he talked (sounds like most Taxi drivers) What really drove its popularity was changes to US speed limits getting imposed during World War II. So the system would make it easier for drivers to adhere to the new requirements.

Avoid speed camera fines 

I know a lot of drivers these days who use cruise control simply because they have a powerful car that can easily go over the speed limit with little effort. Using cruise control can make life a bit easier by controlling the vehicle’s speed so you can pay more attention to what is going on around you. For some drivers I have spoken to they have felt it made them better drivers and more aware.

Improve fuel economy by using cruise control 

We’ve all been in a taxi with one of those drivers that stomps on the throttle pedal, then off again, then on again. They think they are saving petrol by doing so, but in actual fact you use more fuel with that method. So many drivers don’t realise that smooth and steady is the way to save fuel and improve your economy no matter what vehicle you have. The less energy needed to accelerate a vehicle the less fuel you use to build up the energy to move the mass. So if you are gentle with your applications and keep up a fairly constant speed then you can save fuel. A cruise control system can help with this because the car’s electronics will apply light throttle openings to keep the vehicle moving. Its range of sensitivity is generally better than a human’s foot being applied.

When you combine the use of cruise control to really good road awareness ie looking far ahead and pre-empting vehicle movements around you, it becomes easier to flow with the traffic rathe than darting around or accelerating & decelerating quickly.

Honda Civic: How to Install Cruise Control

Although fitting the cruise control feature into a car is a difficult job, there are some obvious benefits. This article demonstrates how to correctly install a cruise control into your Honda Civic.

This article applies to the Honda Civic (1992-2000).

Cruise control is often an overlooked luxury; however, over time, this luxury can save you during those consistent and long commutes to work. But if you want it in your car, you must know how to properly install it. Also, this is not a job not for the impatient. This installation requires customizing a cruise control harness, and splicing it into the stock dash, floor, as well as engine harnesses. The pedal assembly must also be replaced, and cruise actuator must be installed. Although the task may seem daunting, the process is bearable once broken down. Fortunately, the following instructions explain in detail how to properly retrofit the cruise control in your non-cruise Honda Civic.

Materials Needed

• Main cruise control harness from donor Honda Civic EX or Si
• Pedal assembly from donor Civic
• Steering wheel from donor Civic
• Charcoal canister from donor Civic
• Cruise control actuator assembly from donor Civic
• Wire stripper
• Metric socket set
• Electrical tape
• Phillips screwdriver

This article assumes that the driver's side dashboard panels have been removed to access the stock wire harness.

Step 1 – Mark the donor harnesses

The new main harness must be taken from a donor Honda Civic EX or Si with the cruise control feature.

• Lay out the main harness from the donor Honda Civic EX or Si.
• Use a razor blade to remove the wire looms and electrical tape from the wire harnesses.
• Strip and cut the appropriate wires, plugs, and connectors from the wire harnesses. Refer to Figure 2.
• Label all the plugs and connectors. Again, refer to Figure 2.
• Then, disconnect the negative terminal (black) of the battery.

Step 2 – Solder the brake light switch

The cruise control brake light has a 4-pin switch, while the non-cruise control brake light has a 2-pin switch.

• Cut the 2-pin male connector (black) from from your Civic's main harness.
• Solder a new 4-pin female connector in place of the 2-pin connector.
• Plug in the 4-pin male brake light switch to the 4-pin connector.

Step 3 – Wire the fuse box plugs

Strip these three wires from the donor harness:

• Black/Yellow: This wire is the power supply for the cruise control system.
• Light Green: This wire is the power supply to the cruise control module, which is the signal from the ON/OFF switch.
• Red/Blue: This sends a signal to the indicator lamp in the instrument panel.

Remove the blue and green connectors from the fuse box. Insert the stripped wire contacts from the donor harness into the blue and green connectors. Refer to Figures 5 and 6.

• Insert the Light Green and Red/Blue contacts into the blue connector.
• Insert the Black/Yellow contact into the green connector.

Step 4 – Wire the cruise control switch and instrument panel

Wires from the dimmer switch connector must be spliced, and connected to the harness of the cruise control dash switch.

• Unplug the stock dimmer switch connector.
• Splice the Red , Black , and Red/Black wires. Then, snap the dimmer switch wires back into the dimmer switch connector.
• Connect the spliced dimmer switch wires to the harness of the cruise control switch.

The stock instrument panel wire harnesses must be swapped out with the donor Civic's wire harnesses. From the stock wire harnesses:

• Remove the Red/Back wire contacts from the blue instrument panel plug, and connect it to the donor wire plug.
• Remove the Yellow and Black wire contacts from the orange connector of the instrument panel plug. Then, connect it to the donor wire plug.
• Route the Red/Blue wire from the fuse block, and connect it to the instrumental panel plug.

Step 5 – Replace the pedal assembly

The cruise control system uses a special pedal assembly that has an extra lever for the actuator cable. To s wap out the donor cruise pedal assembly with your Civic's stock pedals:

• Remove the driver's seat.
• Disconnect the brake switch assembly.
• Locate all of the 12mm mounting bolts, and remove them with your socket as well as your ratchet.
• Remove the old assembly.
• Install the new assembly, and tighten the 12mm mounting bolts.
• Reconnect the brake switch.

Step 6 – Replace the steering wheel

The stock steering wheel does not have the wiring required for a cruise control installation, so the SRS reel must be swapped out.

• Remove the three Phillips screws that hold the secure the horn cover.
• Use a socket, racket, and extension to remove the steering wheel mounting nut.
• Disconnect the SRS wire clip and horn wire clip.
• Loosen and remove the stock SRS reel.
• Replace the stock SRS reel with a cruise specific unit.
• Reconnect the SRS clip and horn wire clip.
• Install the new steering wheel with the cruise SET/RESUME switch.

Step 7 – Connect the wire harnesses

• Take the completed cruise control sub-harness, and route it through dashboard of the car. Each harness plug should be labeled, so just match them with their corresponding plugs. Use Figures 2 and 12 for reference.
• Mount and connect the cruise control unit to the fuse box.
• Mount the brake and clutch switch to the pedal assembly.
• Connect the grounds.
• Splice the Blue/White wire of the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) an connect it to pin-22 on the C411 connector.
• Route the actuator wire harness through the firewall, and connect it to the fuse box.
• Plug the C411 and C501 connectors into the fuse box.
• Re-install the lower dash panels and trim pieces to hide the wiring.

Step 8 – Install the cruise control actuator

The actuator is a vacuum driven pump that sets the cruise control speed on and off. It uses a cable that connects to the gas pedal, sensing the vehicle's speed and adjusting the airflow inside the actuator to either increase or decrease the cruise level.

• Install a wire harness bracket for the charcoal canister.
• Mount the charcoal canister.
• Mount the actuator bracket.
• Secure the actuator assembly to the chassis with 10mm bolts.
• Route the actuator cable through the firewall, and into the new pedal assembly.
• Route charcoal canister vacuum lines to the actuator assembly as well as the intake manifold.
• Connect the actuator plug.
