Traveling to the Maldives – A Month-by-Month Guide to the Best Times to Go

The Maldives is hot and sunny all year, with average temperatures of between 23ºC / 74ºF and 31ºC / 88 ºF, making it an ideal year-round destination for some fun in the sun. There are, however, better times of the year to travel to the Maldives, as some months see higher rainfall and winds than others. The island nation enjoys the best weather between November and April with full days of sunshine, warm air and sea temperatures, and very little rainfall. The monsoon season runs between May and October, peaking around June, with the northern atolls seeing the highest rainfall between May and November, and the southern atolls between November and March.

Dry Season and Wet Season

The dry season in the Maldives typically runs from around mid-December through early May, but these tend to change each year. The Northeast Monsoon season, which is most prevalent in the northern atolls, actually occurs between November and March, but due to being the dry season, it rarely amounts to anything more than a quick downpour or shower,  a couple times a week. The rainy season in the Maldives runs from early May through mid-December, with the Southwest Monsoon season (in the southern atolls) officially being in July and August.

Cloudbursts and Sunshine

Typical of the tropics, when it rains in the Maldives, it pours down heavily for a short time and then clears up just as quickly. Even during the dry season, it is not unusual to have a brief, torrential downpour in the afternoon, followed by a beautifully clear and balmy evening. During the rainy season, it tends to rain more at night, so days are sunny and bright with just a few interspersed clouds and some light rainfall. It’s rare to have more than a few cloudy days per week with sunny days in between.

It is relatively humid all year round in the Maldives with a typically muggy tropical feel, which takes a few days to become acclimatized to. The temperature, however, rarely peaks much above the averages, so even the high humidity is never unbearable like it can be in Mediterranean Europe during the hottest summer months.

Being an archipelagic island nation strung through a vast portion of the Indian Ocean, steady winds cross through the Maldives throughout the year, bringing cool breezes to the islands. During the Southern Hemisphere winter, which lasts from March until October, the North-East and South-West monsoons bring off-shore winds that create beautiful, peaking surfing waves for those who are there to surf.

The Maldives’ weather in January sees hot, sunny days with low humidity and plenty of sunshine. There might be a slight chance of some rain, but this tends to occur in the afternoons and passes over quickly. The ocean is clear and warm with excellent visibility and is perfect for snorkeling and scuba-diving .

February is probably one of the best months to visit the Maldives. It’s the nation’s driest month, with less than 70 mm of monthly rainfall, around 10 hours of sunshine every day, and balmy temperatures of 30°C / 86°F plus. Visibility is excellent for snorkeling and scuba-diving .

March in the Maldives sees temperatures rising to an average of 30°C / 88°F which are great for long, lazy days on the beach, sunbathing, snorkeling and swimming. There might be a few possible short bursts of rain, which offer relief from the steaming temperatures, and visibility is excellent for snorkeling and scuba-diving . March is also the beginning of the surfing season in the Maldives, which brings beautiful waves and last until October. During this ‘surfing season,’ the biggest waves are most likely to occur between June and August, caused by storms in the Roaring Forties bringing big swells to the archipelago.

This is another gorgeously hot month in the Maldives with temperatures reaching into the mid-30s / 80s. April is officially the end of the dry season, and frequent showers begin to occur around the middle of the month. The air also becomes more humid, however, visibility for snorkeling and scuba-diving is excellent.

May is officially the beginning of the wet season with hot, muggy days, average temperatures of 31°C / 88°F, and a high risk of heavy rainfall and storms during the day. Due to the heavy rainfall and higher levels of plankton in the water, visibility for snorkeling and scuba-diving is slightly reduced, but still enjoyable. Be aware that if there are thunderstorms in the area, it’s not a good idea to be in the water, so head down to the beach for some water-based activities. May also sees the start of the holy month of Ramadan (known as Ramazan in the Maldives), bringing some restrictions to local islands.

While June has a high chance of rainfall and reduced visibility due to the plankton in the water, this is a fantastic time to dive with manta rays and whale sharks that come to feed on the vast amounts of plankton in the water. This month sees many of the resorts offering special deals where visitors can enjoy the plethora of non-beach and water-based amenities that they have to offer. The holy month of Ramadan (Ramazan) continues into June.

• The Maldives in July

The Maldives’ weather in July is hot and humid, with short heavy downpours. This is a particularly good time of the year for surfers with the largest waves stemming from the storms in the Roaring Forties bringing big swells to the archipelago. Swell is amazingly consistent during this time of the year, with the average wave measuring two to eight-foot in height. It is also still a great time to dive with manta rays and whale sharks that come to feed on the enormous amounts of plankton in the water. The 26th July is the Maldivian Independence Day and sees parades and public celebrations on most of the resort islands.

August is hot, humid and wet, with an average of seven hours of sunshine each day and short heavy downpours throughout the day. Visibility is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water, but many of the resorts offer enticing deals, making it a favorite time to visit.

September in the Maldives is one of the wettest months with average maximum temperatures of 30°C / 86°F and around seven hours of sunshine each day. Due to the heavy rainfall and higher levels of plankton in the water, visibility for snorkeling and scuba-diving is slightly reduced, but still enjoyable with excellent chances of seeing manta rays and whale sharks.

October is the Maldives’ wettest month, with high humidity and full days of rain. This is the last month of the Maldives’ surfing season, with the South-West monsoons, which occur between May and October, providing outstanding surfing the Northern and Central Atolls. Due to the heavy rainfall and higher levels of plankton in the water, visibility for snorkeling and scuba-diving is slightly reduced, but still, a great time to dive with manta rays and whale sharks.

The Maldives is one of the world's most picture-perfect luxury travel destinations. To experience the idyllic tropical scenes you've no doubt admired, the best time to visit the Maldives is in the "dry season" from December to April. Not surprisingly, this is also peak season when rates skyrocket. Therefore, if budget is an issue, traveling at a different time may be preferable. You should plan your visit according to the various things to do in the Maldives . Most people are willing to pay the higher prices for good weather, as outdoor activities are limited when it rains. However, one of the benefits of visiting the Maldives during the wet season are the dramatic sunsets after the rain clears.

The weather in the Maldives is split into two distinct seasons by two monsoons, in which the wind changes to the opposite direction.

• The dry northeast monsoon from January to March. This is labeled the "dry season" but it doesn't mean it won't rain. The reality is that the weather is more stable and there's less chance of it raining. Short afternoon and evening showers are frequent in the southern atolls. If you really want to avoid the rain, your best bet is February and March in the northern atolls. December and April are considered transitional months between the monsoons.
• The windy, wet southwest monsoon from mid-May to November. This monsoon is characterized by intense stormy periods that can be brief or last for a few days followed by perfect sunny spells. The weather is unpredictable and the conditions can alter at any minute, although it tends to rain more at night during the wet season. The transitional months from October to early December can be particularly unsettled, with quite a few bursts of rain, before the season transforms completely.

However, it's important to keep in mind that the islands in the Maldives are situated over a considerable distance of more than 800 kilometers (almost 500 miles) from north to south. This means that the weather will vary across the country, and even from island to island in the same area. The southern atolls receive more annual rain than the northern atolls. Yet, rain tends to be less frequent in the southern atolls during the wet season, as they're less exposed to the southwest monsoon. As a result, they're sunnier and not as windy.

What doesn't vary much is the temperature in the Maldives, due to the country's location right on the equator. It stays warm throughout the year, with average temperatures rarely dropping below 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) at night or rising above 88 degrees Fahrenheit (31 degrees Celsius) in the day.

The level of humidity also remains constant, and high, at about 80 percent. The water is warm too, with an average temperature of about 82 degrees F (28 degrees C).

There are some extra things to consider if you're planning on scuba diving in the Maldives , which has some of the most remarkable dive sites in the world. In particular, visibility and marine life change according to the season.

Visibility is generally superior in the dry season , and is especially good along the northeastern atolls during that time. February is the pick of the months for diving there. However, the wet season is a better time to see sharks and manta rays, especially on the southwestern side of the Maldives (around South Ari Atoll) from May to October. The manta rays are attracted by the plentiful availability of plankton to feed on.

If you're lucky, you might get to see a whale shark. The Maldives is one of the few places on earth where this is possible. These massive sharks are mostly found on the western side of the Maldives from May to December, and on the eastern side up until April. The protected area off the coast of Maamigili Island in South Ari Atoll has whale shark sightings year-round.

Unfortunately, getting to the Maldives from the U.S. is quite an ordeal as there are no direct flights. Be prepared for travel to take a considerable amount of time (up to 30 hours) and money (from about $1,200 if you fly out of a major international hub such as New York, Boston, or Los Angeles). If you have limited funds, you may want to think about going to the Maldives for a couple of weeks during the cheaper, wet season rather than going for just a week during peak season.

Prices for accommodations in the Maldives generally drop substantially at the start of May, on the fringe of the low season. It's often the case that the weather is still decent then, as the wet season doesn't set in until the second half of May. Plus, if you have your heart set on a certain resort in the Maldives, the low season will make it more affordable.

May and June tend to be the cheapest months, with deals for over-water bungalows at top-rated resorts running up to 50 percent off high season prices. Do compare prices (including flight prices) though, as they rise during summer break.

The most popular islands in the Maldives book up well in advance during the high season. While flash sales and last-minute offers come up throughout the year, these are more common for the commercial mass-market resorts. Of course, this isn't an issue if you're flexible in regards to your accommodations and travel dates. If you can drop everything and book within six weeks of travel, you may be able to score yourself a super deal as resorts (even the top-end ones) constantly adjust their prices to maximize occupancy levels. So, make a note of a handful of resorts you're interested in (here are some really beautiful hotels or take a look at the Maldives Tourism website for inspiration) and monitor them.

The fact that accommodations are spread over many islands in the Maldives means that it never feels too crowded there, even during peak season.

January is a very popular time to visit the Maldives, as people want to escape the winter at home. Prices are especially high over the New Year period. Make sure you book well in advance. The weather stabilizes in January, resulting in mostly calm and clear sunny days. While you can expect about three rainy days during the month in the north, this increases up to 10 days in the south.

Events to check out:

• Huravee Day is a tribute to Sultan Hussain Izzuddin, who freed the Maldives from brief South Indian occupation in 1752. It features traditional music, food, and dance. The date is based on the Islamic calendar and varies each year, but it's always celebrated on the third day of the sixth month which generally falls in late December or early January.

February is regarded as the driest and least humid month to visit the Maldives. Statistically, the north only experiences a couple of rainy days during the month. The number of rainy days in the south also drops to about five, and these are usually short showers in the southeast part. Prices are high, reflecting the fact that it's peak tourist season.

• Valentines Day: Many resorts offer special (and costly!) romantic packages for Valentine's Day.

The number of rainy days remains pretty constant in the north but starts to rise to an average of eight in the south. Again, the rain is usually restricted to short bursts that bring relief from the heat, rather than lengthy downpours. The surfing season gets underway in the Maldives in March. Some resorts offer special deals, as peak season winds down later in the month.

The temperature and humidity are slightly higher in April, as the transition from the dry northeast monsoon to the wet southwest monsoon commences. This produces a lot more rain, consisting of afternoon showers that increase in frequency from mid-month. The number of rainy days per month averages about six in the north and 12 in the south. Keep an eye out for additional special deals, as long as you avoid traveling around Easter.

• Ramadan: The Maldives is an Islamic country and the holy month of Ramadan begins early April in 2022 (the exact date varies each year according to the Islamic calendar). Resort islands aren't affected but restaurants will be closed on local islands, as Muslims fast all day.

Resorts drop their prices in early May. The southwest monsoon usually arrives in the Maldives during the second half of the month. It reaches the southern part of the country first and proceeds north. The second half of May can be particularly wet, with high possibility of storms and whole days of rain. Diving visibility is reduced. Ramadan concludes on Eid in early May 2022, with families gathering to feast.

The southwest monsoon covers the whole country by early June. Expect quite a lot of clouds, morning and evening drizzle, and some torrential downpours. Resorts continue to offer discounted rates to entice guests. If you're planning to visit the Maldives in June, the southern atolls are preferable. The number of rainy days per month jumps to as many as 18 in the north, compared to only 10 or so in the south. Sharks and manta rays are a draw for scuba divers in the south.

The rain continues similar to June but eases off slightly in the north during July, bringing the number of rainy days down to about 15 or 16. The south experiences a couple of extra rainy days throughout the month though, averaging around 12. Rates can be higher in July, as families go on summer vacation. This month is great for surfing, as the storms produce reliable big swells.

• Independence Day (July 26) marks the day the Maldives gained independence from the British in 1965, after 77 years of protection. Cultural events take place across the country.

August is another popular off-season month for summer vacation in the Maldives, which may result in fewer discounted deals. The number of rainy days continues to reduce slightly in the north, especially towards the end of August. However, it remains constant at about 12 in the south. Downpours are short and heavy.

The weather in the Maldives is quite unpredictable in September. It can rain heavily, or alternatively you may get only an hour of rain some days. There are less tourists, and this is reflected in discounted rates for accommodations. The number of rainy days is about the same in the north and south, averaging around 13 during the month.

• National Day celebrates the end of 15 years of Portuguese occupation in the Maldives, in 1573. The date is set according to the Islamic calendar and varies each year. In 2022, it falls on Sept. 27. There are patriotic parades and marches throughout the Maldives, especially in the capital city Male.

The wet southwest monsoon begins to withdraw in October, producing unsettled weather. The number of rainy days jumps to an average of 15 in the south, exceeding that in the north. The surfing season draws to a close in October. It's also the final month for good sharks and manta ray sightings in the south. Expect rates at top resorts to rise towards the end of October.

The swap in wind direction, associated with the transition from southwest monsoon to northeast monsoon in November, reduces the number of rainy days in the north to about eight. It remains high, at about 15, in the south though. There are heavy downpours that tend to pass quickly in the afternoons. This is the last month to find a cheap deal (if you're lucky) before peak season really kicks in.

Events to check out :

• Victory Day (Nov. 3) commemorates the defeat of an attempted coup by a terrorist group from Sri Lanka in 1988. A military march, drills, traditional dances, and processions are held in Male.
• Republic Day (Nov. 11) marks the day Sultanate rule was replaced with a republic government in 1968. Marching bands and vibrant parades are highlights in Male.

December is the start of the "dry," peak season in the Maldives. You'll still get some rain at the beginning of the month (and it can be heavy at times) before the weather transforms completely. However, it lessens in the north as the month goes on. Many tourists visit the Maldives for the Christmas-New Year period. The resorts hold special buffets and gala dinners for these occasions. In addition to super high prices, it's common for resorts to have minimum stay length requirements.

• Fishermen’s Day (Dec. 10) honors the country's fishermen, who contribute greatly to the economy. Educational and fun events about traditional fishing are organized. You'll be able to devour delicious seafood too!

If you want good weather, visit during the dry season from December to April. However, prices are at their highest during these months.

The Maldives are expensive year-round, but September is the best time to find deals on flights and hotels. However, it's also the peak of the rainy season and the weather can be unpredictable.

The monsoon season begins mid-May and lasts until November. During these months, rainstorms are frequent and can last a couple of minutes or a couple of days, but the weather during these months is sporadic.

First things first: there's not really any such thing as a bad time to visit the Maldives . Whether your holiday to the Indian Ocean’s pièce de résistance is a romantic escape, a getaway with friends or a solo adventure, you're in for an incredible experience.

That said, it’s worth spending a moment researching the advantages of visiting during specific times, maybe to optimize amazing wildlife sightings or find the best snorkeling conditions. Our seasonal guide to the Maldives will ensure you don't pick the wrong month for a relaxing honeymoon or miss out on the underwater experience of your dreams.

All that’s left for you to decide is  which island is right for you . Just a word of warning – with 1192 to choose from, this is easier said than done…

January to March is the best time for fantastic weather

If warm weather and sun-drenched beaches are a priority, you can’t go wrong with a visit to the Maldives in January, February or March. These months fall outside the monsoon period and are typically when the islands get the most hours of sun. Full disclosure – monsoon season tails off in late November but this is when prices start to creep up due to the demand for winter sun holidays, while rates also get higher closer to Christmas.

Another reason this is an excellent time to visit is because this is when the water is at its clearest and calmest – the snorkeling and diving are fantastic. Atolls such as the Raa Atoll, famous for its diverse marine life and spectacular coral formations, are great destinations to check out at this time of year. But if you’re a beach bum who prefers to stay close to their sun lounger, you’re also in luck – on average you can expect around nine hours of sunshine during these months, while humidity levels remain low and average temperatures hover around 29°C (84°F).

April to August is a great time to bag a bargain

Late April is when the first showers of the year start to appear but April to August is still a wonderful time to book a holiday to the Maldives, simply because it’s one of the cheapest times to visit. Even with the higher chance of rainfall, you’ll still enjoy between seven and eight hours of sunshine every day.

It’s worth bearing in mind that if you’re a keen snorkeler or scuba diver, water visibility is often reduced during these months (although the average sea temperature at this time – a bath-warm 30°C (86°F) – means it’s still a fantastic time for a dip in the ocean). This is an excellent season for travelers with a limited budget – airfares and resort rates are significantly lower and resorts are less crowded. Finding a spot at the bar from which to soak up those gorgeous sunset views won’t be a problem and complimentary room upgrades are more likely.

Don’t forget that the Maldives isn’t just about the great outdoors, either: resorts offer a staggering range of activities (most of which don’t depend on the weather) and there are often more on offer between April and August, ranging from cookery masterclasses to art workshops. Fancy embracing paint power? Cora Cora Maldives , on the Raa Atoll, is a great option and runs a series of art classes with a local artist who daubed his beautiful designs onto the resort’s villas.

June and July are when to hang ten in the Maldives

June and July are ideal months to try surfing in the Maldives because this is when the waves are at their highest. A growing number of resorts now have surf schools, although one of our favorite spots is Laamu Atoll. This is where you’ll find the Six Senses Laamu , which was one of the first resorts in the Maldives with a surf school. Generally, the northern and central atolls are the best destinations for surfing in the Maldives.

July is the perfect time to join in with Independence Day celebrations

The Maldives’ Independence Day is on July 26 and parades, parties and cultural performances transform this island nation as everyone celebrates together, with some of the most colorful celebrations held at the country’s resorts. Typically, there’s a wider range of cultural activities for guests to enjoy around this time, whether it’s masterclasses led by traditional lacquer artists or lessons in leaf-folding, which involves creating elaborate sculptures from palm leaves. Trust us – your average piece of Japanese origami will look rather plain after this.

Independence Day is also a great time to sample local cuisine, as many resorts will roll out special celebratory menus. Highlights will often include delicious cakes adorned with the colors of the Maldivian flag (the cutting of this cake is usually one of the most important events) and there will be endless opportunities to sample traditional dishes such as saagu bondai bai , a delicious sago dessert made with coconut milk, rose water and cardamom.

October and November are brilliant months for wildlife spotting

Yes, there’s a higher risk of rainfall and thunderstorms during these months, but they’re generally short, sharp downpours. You can expect between six and eight hours of sun a day, while the mercury will hover around 27°C (80°F). The major advantage to visiting at this time of year is the wildlife-spotting opportunities. Whale sharks and manta rays are regularly sighted as they feast on plankton. For some of the best sightings head to the Raa Atoll – this is a prime manta-spotting territory, and the northern tip’s proximity to the Baa Atoll (a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve) ramps up the wow factor.

If seeing the region’s marine life is a priority, stay at a resort that operates conservation programs or other schemes designed with wildlife in mind. The InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort , for example, is regarded as one of the best places to see manta rays. But don’t just take our word for it – this is where UK-based charity The Manta Trust chose to set up its first base in the Maldives, and visitors can sign up for a wide range of manta-themed activities, including manta-spotting snorkeling excursions and presentations about the charity’s work.

December means plenty of opportunities for festive fun

Yes, December is one of the more expensive times to visit the Maldives, but we’re firm believers this period should never be ruled out. It’s a fantastic time to spot marine life and the region’s resorts go all out when it comes to festive fun. When to find the best weather in the Maldives

The Maldives is often warm and sunny throughout the year, but its climate is split into a wet season and a dry season. During the dry season, from November through April, temperatures hover in the mid- to upper 80s. Average precipitation is lowest from January through March, but even during the dry season, an afternoon rain is possible.

During the wet season, from May through October, some islands may experience upward of nine inches of precipitation in a single month. Although this sounds like enough to ruin a vacation , most rain comes from fast-moving afternoon storms, allowing visitors to enjoy sunshine and warm temperatures the rest of the day.

In the southern atolls, the wet and dry seasons become slightly less pronounced. Rainfall is fairly consistent (and on the higher side) throughout the year.

When to travel to the Maldives to avoid the crowds

The wet season generally tends to be the slow season. There might be slightly less sunshine this time of year and rates tend to be lower and the crowds thinner .

Even during the wet season, it's not uncommon for there to be multiple sunny days in a row — especially toward the beginning and end of the season (May and October or November) — so don't let the season deter you.

When to visit the Maldives for water sports

Thanks to the Maldives' geographic location, it's a popular destination for water-fueled adventure.

The surf season runs from mid-February through November, which is when the largest swells can be found. If you're looking to canoe or kayak offshore, you may want to avoid visiting during surf season. Waters are calmer during December and January.

A number of remote islands and an abundance of marine life make diving and snorkeling popular in the Maldives. Diving is great year-round, but visibility increases slightly during the dry season — specifically, January through April.

When to visit the Maldives for events

The Maldives, which is largely a Muslim country, has a number of religious holidays and events throughout the year. Many are based on the Islamic lunar calendar, which differs from the Gregorian calendar many of us are familiar with. If there's a specific religious event you'd like to experience in the Maldives, be sure to check the exact date before booking travel.

For Maldivians, Independence Day is one of the most important days of the year. The holiday is usually celebrated on July 26, which is when the country gained its independence from Britain in 1965. During Independence Day, there are festivities, parades and performances across all the islands. The capital city, Malé, is one of the best places to experience the holiday.

Republic Day, which occurs in November, celebrates the establishment of the Republic of Maldives in 1968. Festivities include marching bands, parades, speeches, ceremonies and children walking the streets wearing their best clothes — a true display of the country's culture, heritage and pride.

Huravee Day, which signifies the day Sultan Hassan Izzuddeen freed the country from the occupation of South India in 1752, is celebrated with dancing and traditional meals. The celebration date is based on the Islamic lunar calendar, so it varies annually. In 2020, Huravee Day was celebrated on Jan. 28. In 2021, the holiday will fall on Jan. 16.

Since the Maldives is a Muslim country, Ramadan is an extremely significant holiday. The actual date varies with the Islamic calendar (it takes place on the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar). The holiday is usually celebrated for about a month in the spring. During Ramadan, locals fast during the day, but restaurants and resorts operate as normal. Many restaurants do offer special meals for Iftar — the evening meal breaking each daily fast — which often comprise local foods and juices not typically served the rest of the year.

When to visit the Maldives to see bioluminescence

In oceans and bays around the world, bioluminescent plankton illuminate the water, almost like an aquatic imitation of the aurora borealis. While many animals on both land and sea emit a bioluminescent light (think: fireflies and jellyfish), the plankton often appear at the water's surface, giving it a bluish glow.

One of the most popular places to view the plankton is off of Vaadhoo Island in the Raa Atoll, although it's possible to see the phenomenon in any of the atolls. Your best bet is to visit between June and October, which is when the plankton are typically present.

Bioluminescence can only be seen in turbulent water, such as in the waves on the shoreline or wake from a boat. It can also appear after stirring the water with your foot or hand.

Cheapest time to visit the Maldives

Affordable airfare.

Flights to Malé are generally cheapest in the late fall and winter, although the exact months vary depending on where you are flying from.

According to Skyscanner.com , flights from Miami, New York City and Chicago are cheapest in February. Average airfare from New York is $642, $710 from Chicago and $739 from Miami.

Flights from the West Coast — Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles — are cheapest in November. Los Angeles is the cheapest city to fly out of overall, with the average cost of airfare around $385. From Seattle and San Francisco, expect to pay around $710 and $700, respectively.

Affordable lodging

Lodging prices vary, depending on exactly where you're staying, but it's a safe bet to say the wet season — specifically, May through August — is the cheapest time to stay in the Maldives. According to travel search site Kayak , average hotel prices are at their lowest in May, when you can expect to pay $369 per night. Prices peak at around $705 per night in December. With the exception of November, when prices are in the mid-$500 range, expect to pay in the mid-$600 range the rest of the year.

When you’re weighing up the best time to visit the Maldives, it’s important to remember that all weather data is based on past conditions, and it’s impossible to predict the future. So while the wet season months of May to November typically see more unsettled weather with higher rainfall, you could have back-to-back days of sunshine. Equally, you could experience grey skies and showers in the dry season – there’s no way to know for sure what will happen. 

Bear in mind that the Maldives is a long, thin chain of islands spanning more than 500 miles from north to south. Just as you’d expect different cities to have different weather, the same is true from one atoll to another and even neighbouring islands!

Some destinations are just gorgeous year-round, but when is the best time to go to the Maldives to make the most of the weather in this dream destination? Whether your goal is to relax with perfect sunshine, or you'd ideally like to skip peak season to avoid crowds, planning in advance is important ahead of a trip as big as this.

Chances are, you want to go the the Maldives because you've seen how truly beautiful it is. Dotted like ink blots in the clear, tropical waters of the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is an archipelago made up of more than 1,000 islands, 200 of which are inhabited. For many, the best time to visit the Maldives is December to April, as that's dry season, with little rain and low humidity leading to bright blue skies, cloudless days and still, balmy evenings. Wet season starts in May and ends in October, with considerably more rain and occasionally strong winds. For scuba divers and snorkelers, visibility is particularly good during the dry season, too, as a result of currents flowing from the northeast (the eastern atolls enjoy the best visibility, with whale sharks and manta rays most commonly spotted between August and November).

November and April are considered ‘shoulder season’, when room rates and flight prices are lower, travelers can make serious savings and weather still averages 88°F.

The cheapest time to visit the Maldives is during the low season, which is May to November. The low season sees hotel rates drop substantially, with free transfers, free nights and room upgrades thrown in regularly. The underwater marine life was our highlight on the second day. It goes without saying that a trip to Maldives is incomplete without taking a dip into the crystal clear blue waters that merge with the rich marine life of Maldives. Home to about 1200 islands, it has some of the best beaches in the world with a stunning underwater marine life that will captivate your soul. The magical underwater world of Maldive is bound to cast a spell on you. It boasts a myriad of marine life which is considered to be the best for snorkeling, diving and recreational activities. Take a dip and swim freely into the depth of the ocean and discover the magical wonders of the underwater world, witness a spectacle of vibrant coral reefs, sea turtles, reef sharks, stingrays and other species!

2. The Luxurious Water Villas

The overwater villas were the highlight on the third day. A staycation in Maldives is all about living life in the lap of luxury and amidst the surreal waters. The overwater villas are an escape to experience an ultimate Maldivian lifestyle. Waking up to the sound of waves lapping against your resort and the cool sea breeze greeting you gently in the morning, this is what heaven feels like.

The watersports was our highlight on the fourth day. Maldives is a gem for enjoying watersports, we indulged in windsurfing, canoeing, snorkeling and lots of exciting water sport activities. Water sports is definitely among the top reasons to visit Maldives, you can truly make the best of water sports like kayaking, snorkeling, jet-skiing, rollerblading, canoeing, windsurfing, sea bobbing and more. The resorts have instructors to guide you through all the activities.

4. The Food

Nothing beats the Maldivian cuisine, relish the local food like the Maldivian curry with Tuna or gorge on the fresh seafood platter that includes a delicious fish soup accompanied by lime, chili, rice, curry leaves, onions and a coconut. We got arrangement in bagicha restaurant and our package included breakfast, lunch and dinner so we didn’t have to spend a single penny on food. It was absolutely delicious.

5. Paradise Island Resort

The whole paradise island resort was the highlight on the fifth day as it was our last day. Imagine an island in the middle of an ocean, with pristine white beaches and deep blue horizons along with soaring coconut palm trees. You can have all of this at the Paradise Island Resort & Spa which is an ultimate destination for travelers looking to unwind in the lap of luxury and nature.

We visited the maldives in may 2021 and its starting of the monsoon. The weather is a little bit humid and couple of pleasant shower made our day. You’ll have quite a bit of rain if you’re going in May, although it doesn’t usually rain for long and you’ll still get plenty of hot and sunny weather. The average high in the capital, Malé, is 31ºC in May, so it’s a great time to go if you love the heat.

The Maldives has an incredibly tropical climate, which means that while there’s a wet and dry season, temperatures remain fairly constant throughout the year.

Even in ‘winter,’ temperatures average around 30 degrees Celsius. 

The dry season is from November to April, and the peak of tourist season will often run from December through to March. Prices are higher in the dry season, and availability is lower, but the weather will be perfect.

November in the Maldives

November is the start of dry season, but it can be the best time to visit Maldives if you’re looking for bargains. The peak tourist season has yet to begin, but there’s little chance of rain, and plenty of deals to draw in the travelers!

You might be able to catch the last whale sharks around the Maldives before they start heading elsewhere in search of food. The manta rays are still in town, too.

Diving coral reefs still isn’t great, because the water has yet to clear up, but it’s definitely much better than previous months.

In December, you can expect the tourist season to begin in earnest as the countdown to Christmas holidays begins.

While the Maldives is a Muslim nation, a majority of their visitors are often from Western countries, and they make use of their Christmas holidays to visit. 

The weather is lovely in December. The rains are over, and there are bright skies and sunshine almost every day of the week. Take some time off, book into a luxury resort, and enjoy the beautiful weather.

May is the start of the rainy season, but the reality is that you’d be pretty unlucky to get caught in a monsoon deluge straight away!

The water definitely starts to get choppier, but experienced divers will still have a great time enjoying the dive sites, as the water is still exceptionally clear.

In July, the weather gets worse. This isn’t the best time to visit Maldives if it’s clear skies and sparkling sunshine that you’re looking for. 

Expect heavy thunderstorms and lots of rain. Scuba diving is challenging because of the rough seas and lack of visibility, but you will be able to spot whale sharks and manta rays as they start to appear to feed on the ever-growing mass of plankton in the waters. 

Prices are reasonable in July, and 26th July is Independence Day; you can participate in nation-wide festivities and cultural events!

August sees a bit of a respite from the rain and the monsoon, although the weather can still be quite rough.

As it’s the school holidays in many parts of the world, tourist numbers start to pick up in August, so prices can begin to climb, despite this being the rainy season. 

Unless you can only travel in August, though, there’s no real benefit to visiting the Maldives right now. You’re better off waiting for the drier weather or scoring a few bargains in earlier months of the wet season.

This might be your last chance to see whale sharks and manta rays, as they tend to disappear at the end of October (at least in large numbers). You can also take advantage of the big waves to enjoy the fledgling surf scene in the Maldives. 

For many people, October can be a great time to visit to save money, as prices are often at their lowest.

Unlike in other parts of the world, the country only has two distinct seasons — the dry and wet season. The wet season generally falls under the months of mid-May to November, while the dry season is from January to March. December and April are considered the transitional periods between the two seasons.

In terms of temperature, it typically fluctuates between highs of 88°F to lows of 80°F. Over the course of the year, Maldives temperature rarely soars above 90°F and dips below 77°F.

Here’s a breakdown of what to expect during each month in Maldives. 

January 

January is the official start of the dry season . The average temperature in Maldives fluctuates between highs of 86°F and lows of 80°F. Throughout the month, you can expect around six rainy days with about two inches of accumulated precipitation.

Weather in Maldives in February is predominantly dry. As the driest month of the year, there are only three rainfall days with only 0.04 inches of precipitation. Average temperature during this month isn’t much different from January, with average highs increasing to 87°F while lows remain at a steady 80°F.

With an average high of 88°F, March is one of the warmest months of the year in the Maldives. There’s little chance of rain with an accumulated precipitation of just over an inch. In addition, March likewise experiences the calmest wind conditions during the year.

April is the transitional period from the dry to wet season . It’s still a hot month with average temperatures varying between highs of 88°F and lows of 82°F. Although, April does see slightly higher chances of rain, particularly toward the end of the month.

Maldives weather in May still has plenty of warm sunshine, but the arrival of the southwest monsoon around the second half of the month signals the start of the wet or monsoon season . As such, expect higher risks of rainfall and thunderstorms.

August is well into monsoon season in Maldives. Temperatures are still warm but the average high does decrease slightly to 86°F, while average lows remain a steady 81°F. The weather in Maldives in August also has higher levels of humidity.

September is typically the wettest month in Maldives, with an average precipitation of 5.5 inches and an average of 13 rainy days throughout. The Maldives weather in September is still considerably warm, with average highs of 86°F and lows of 80°F.

October experiences practically the same average temperatures as September. When it comes to the Maldives weather in October , there’s still high chances of rain storms with high humidity.

When’s The Cheapest Time to Visit the Maldives?

If you’re on a budget or looking for a quieter experience, consider visiting during the “shoulder” seasons – late April through May or October through early December. 

These months offer mostly great weather (it’s still warm!) without as many tourists vying for space. Hotel prices drop significantly during these months, so finding good deals is much easier. Plus, you’ll have more personal space on the beach.

If you’re trying to save some cash, your best bet is travelling during the monsoon season (May through September).

It all makes for the perfect recipe for a beachside getaway. If you wanna escape the 9-5 grind and come back with your batteries recharged, then look no further than Maldives. You might be wondering though, how is Maldives like in May in 2024? Is it a good time to be there? Well, this is a guide that should answer all of the common questions that you might have. How’s the Weather in May in Maldives in 2024?

Well, May is the monsoon season in Maldives and is considered to be an offseason. Towards the end of May and till the beginning of August is when you can expect some rain in Maldives.

Temperatures aren’t too different from the rest of the year though. May is still quite hot and sunny with temperatures averaging about 28-31 degrees celsius. This is because the monsoon season in Maldives isn’t quite like the ones we have here in India.

You can expect some light showers in the early mornings or late evenings that last for 10-20 mins on average. A continuous downpour isn’t that common even in the monsoon season. To put numbers to this, India gets an average rainfall of 65cm while Maldives gets an average rainfall of about 20cm in a year. There is however a small risk, weather is a force of nature after all but the same risk stands across the year as we have seen heavy rains and storms even during peak seasons. Majorly though, rainfall in Maldives is going to be light showers.

May being an offseason in Maldives is less crowded. Since most of you will be staying in Private island resorts . There is also a case to be made for less crowded resorts. During peak season times, resorts are sometimes known to be so crowded that it’s hard getting tables during meal times at the restaurants, beaches being crowded and overall a more chaotic experience. However, During May when occupancy in the Maldives resorts are lower, you might be one of the few guests there. The experience of being on an island resort with very few people around and all the attention of the staff being focused and showered on just a few guests does make the experience more intimate and enjoyable.

As a result of the offseason, prices for resorts and stays, in general, will also be on the cheaper side. To give you an example, orange juice might end up costing you anywhere between 10-20 USD based on the resort. So you might end up paying more on trip if you don’t pick the right meal plan.
• Booking an all-inclusive meal plan is a must if you consume alcohol. Maldives being a Muslim country doesn’t serve alcohol or allow the purchase of it on any of its public islands. Private island resorts have special licenses to sell liquor and they can be very pricey with beers starting at 15 USD. May, being one of the months that fall under Ramadan, might leave you wondering if it will affect your vacation in any way. The short answer is no, Maldives being a very tourism-focused nation makes sure that Ramadan doesn’t get in the way of the guest’s experiences. It’s business as usual and the only thing you might have to bear is dinner being pushed by an hour to around 7 pm to accommodate the prayer times for the Muslims working at the resorts.

Scuba diving in Maldives are largely not affected due to rains. If the clouds completely cover the sky, visibility might take a hit but it also opens up the possibility of seeing some aquatic life that only comes out only during the night. Generally though, rain or overcast skies don’t hinder the experience of a scuba dive by much. You should be more cautious of winds though as they might result in more turbulent waters and also make it harder to get to the dive spots.

The experience compares to the rest of the year isn’t too different and the occasional light showers are quite nice. Diving in the Maldives

These idyllic coral islands rank amongst the best dive destinations in the world. When conditions are good, the underwater visibility is at the highest level – sometimes exceeding 50 metres – and the warm water temperatures year-round make diving in the Maldives a pleasure. The North Malé Atoll is home to the Lion’s Head and Wattaru Kandu dive sites, both of which are frequented by reef sharks. Wattaru Kandu is also home to stingrays and garden eels whilst Lankanfinokhu, or Manta Point as it’s known locally, is a great place to see manta rays being cleaned by local colonies of cleaner fish.

In the South Malé Atoll, Hukrueli is another place to see rays and cleaner fish, and Maaya Thila, a protected marine area, is home to white-tip sharks, turtles, zebra morays and the elusive guitar shark. Hanifaru lagoon in the Baa Atoll is one of the best places to see whale sharks and manta rays – June to September being the best time as this is during the monsoon season and equinox when the lagoon is filled with plankton.

The Scuba Diver course provides pre-entry level certification in three days and on completion you can then upgrade to an Open Water Diver qualification by taking the additional five day course. Temperatures in the Maldives stay at a wonderfully warm 25-30°Cyear-round and only drop a few degrees at night. There’s an average of 8 hours of sunshine every day and the water temperature barely falls below 25°C. There are distinct wet (south-west monsoon) and dry (north-east monsoon) seasons; peak season for the Maldives is between December and April when the climate is drier, it’s less windy and the weather is hotter. Most travellers see this as the best time to go, but there are other factors to consider when choosing the time of year to travel here – like when to see specific marine life and when you’ll find the best value offers. Each island in the archipelago has its own microclimate, but there are general patterns that occur throughout the year.

The Maldives in January The Maldives’ weather in January is hot, with low humidity and plenty of sunshine. There may be some rain, but at this time of year it passes very quickly. The Maldives in February February is an excellent time to travel to the Maldives. It’s the Maldives’ driest month, with less than 70mm of monthly rainfall, average maximum temperatures of 30°C and around 10 hours of sunshine each day. Visibility for diving and snorkelling is excellent.

The Maldives in March In March, temperatures in the Maldives rise to an average maximum of 31°C – great for long days on the beach. Possible short bursts of rain offer relief from the hot temperatures. Visibility for diving and snorkelling is excellent and March also sees the start of the surfing season in the Maldives.

The Maldives in April April is another wonderfully hot month in the Maldives. This is the end of the Maldives’ official dry season and there are often showers mid-month. It’s also a little more humid. Water visibility for diving and snorkelling is still very good.

The Maldives in May May is hot, with average maximum temperatures of 31°C, but is the start of the Maldives’ official wet season and comes with risks of storms and possible whole days of rain. Diving visibility is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water.

The Maldives in June June is another month in the Maldives with a high chance of rainfall. It’s a good time to take advantage of the best value offers if you’re willing to spend as much time enjoying your resort’s facilities as on the beach. Diving visibility is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water, however there’s a huge advantage for divers as manta rays and whale sharks come to feed on the plankton.

The Maldives in July The Maldives’ weather in July is hot and humid, with short heavy downpours. This is another time to check for great value offers and is particularly good for surfers. Water visibility for diving is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water, but the big draw underwater is the presence of manta rays and whale sharks. 26July is Independence Day and you may see small parades and public celebrations on resort islands.

The Maldives in August August in the Maldives is hot and humid, with an average 7 hours of sunshine each day and short heavy downpours. Diving visibility is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water, but enticing offers mean this is still a popular time to visit.

The Maldives in September September is one of the Maldives’ wettest months. It sees average maximum temperatures of 30°C, and there’s still an average 7 hours of sunshine each day. Diving visibility is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water, but there are great opportunities to spot whale sharks and manta rays feeding on the plankton.

The Maldives in October October is the Maldives’ wettest month, with high humidity and with possible whole days of rain. It’s a good time to take advantage of the best value offers if you’re willing to spend as much time enjoying your resort’s facilities as on the beach. October is the last month of the Maldives’ surfing season and the last month of the year for good sightings of whale sharks and manta rays.

A note on Ramadam The exact date of the holy month of Ramadan (known as Ramazan in the Maldives) changes each year. Guests visiting Maldives’ resorts during the holy month are unlikely to notice anything different to any other month – meals and alcohol are served as usual. Visiting the Maldives in January

Weather:   With plenty of sunshine and warmth, January is a great time for the Maldives holiday. The weather is hot, with quite comfortable humidity (75%) and cooling ocean breeze. There may be some rain, but at this time of year it passes very quickly while winds from the northeast blow away any clouds, meaning skies are clear and blue.

Despite being the coolest month of the year, a daily average temperature of around 27ºC - 29ºC during daylight hours, so make sure you pack plenty of sunscreen. The sea temperature remains a warm 27ºC. During January, the islands have nine hours of sunshine a day while rainfall averages around 75mm, with just around five wet days in the month.

Hotels:  January in the Maldives is peak season. This is due not only to finest weather, but also to the onset of holidays. Hotel prices are at their top, so it is recommended to book in advance , especially the festive packages Many go to the Maldives to celebrate the New Year and Christmas, which will certainly affect the cost of living. After January 10, hotel prices fall by about 15-20% of the Christmas and New Year offers and keep this way throughout February until early March.

Things to Do:  Start the year in the best possible ways. A calm January cannot boast of significant waves, but if you are not coming here to compete, there will be plenty of waves for surfing in North Male. Lohifushi Island has high stable waves, where the international prestigious O'Neill Deep Blue Open tournament is held. Also popular is the so-called "police island" where surfers can enjoy the waves. Male has a sandy bottom without corals, which is an indisputable plus for a surfer. Also in January you can go windsurfing, water skiing, canoeing, catamaran, scooter and banana boat rides.

Diving & Snorkeling:   The visibility for diving and snorkelling is great. From December to March the water currents flow through the atolls from east to west, this creates fantastic visibility along the eastern atolls. The current is usually strongest over this period. During this time many shark species gather in the eastern side channel entrances in large numbers while the mantas are attracted to the western side where the plankton flows out to the open ocean.

Highlights:   Locals celebrate New Year in the Maldives differently from the rest of the world. Their New Year comes in April, according to the lunar calendar. Therefore, all events taking place from December 31 to January 1 are designed exclusively for tourists. But don't worry about fireworks and New Year's celebrations. The Maldives hosts chic celebrations, New Years parties and masquerades in hotels. It is there that you can enjoy the atmosphere of the New Year under the palm trees.

Visiting the Maldives in February

Weather:   If you visit Maldives during the month of February the weather is at its most reliable with most days having clear blue skies, the occasional white fluffy cloud and very little rain. With plenty of sunshine and warmth, this is a great time for a beach holiday.

Hotels:   February is one of the best months to visit the Maldives, so hotel rates stay consistently high. This is a very popular time for travelling and booking in advance is advised.

Things to Do:   Calm water flat seas around the Maldives during high season are perfect for boat trips of any kind – the surface of the water is often like a mirror and perfect for spotting dolphins jumping in the distance, or turtles coming to the surface for a breath, before diving back down to the reef. Kayaking and paddle-boarding adventures are a must this time

Diving & Snorkeling:   The snorkelling conditions are likely to be better than you could ever dream of. Although the visibility is good for most of the year, in high season it is simply stunning with both divers and snorkelers able to to enjoy diving with manta rays, whale sharks and other tropical marine life, in calmer conditions.

Weather:  In March, temperatures in the Maldives rise to an average maximum of 31°C – great for long days on the beach. Rare short rains of rain offer relief from the hot temperatures.

Hotels:  High season rumbles on, with accommodation booked out across the country. From March 1, hotel prices fall by another 10-12% from the February offerings and remain so until mid-May.

Things to Do:  March sees the start of the surfing season in the Maldives. The finest weather coupled with nine hours of uninterrupted sunlight makes Maldives in march a perfect destination to try out all outdoor activities and spend some cherished moments with your loved ones. The clear skies and soothing breeze creates a perfect ambiance for sunbathing as well.

Diving & Snorkeling:   Weather remains idyllic with perfect conditions for snorkelling and diving

Visiting the Maldives in April

Weather:   April is another wonderfully hot month in the Maldives, with plenty of sunshine and good water visibility; however, there is a slightly increased risk of rain, especially toward the end of the month. This is the official end of the Maldives’ dry season and also a little more humid. Expect more rains towards end of April.

Hotels:  From March 1, hotel prices fall by another 10-12% from the February offerings and remain so until mid-May.

Things to Do:  Fewer travellers venture to the Maldives in April, but it's a great time to visit with overall pleasant weather, good diving visibility, fun surf conditions, and agreeable sailing weather.

Diving & Snorkeling:   Water visibility for diving and snorkelling is still very good.

Highlights:   The spirit of Easter in The Maldives is all about hope, love and joyful living. The celebration comes with a special Easter dinner followed by beach orpool parties with the in-house bands and DJ and a treasure hunt to make your day more fun-filled and entertaining.

Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr. Ramadan takes place in the ninth month of the lunar calendar. It lasts for a sacred 30 days during which Muslims must observe strict fasting. Only children, the elderly, pregnant women and those who are not able to fast for medical reasons are exempt from it. During this period, during daylight hours, it is forbidden to eat, quench thirst, smoke, listen to music loudly ... and a number of other prohibitions. After Ramadan comes the Great Feast, or Eid al-Fitr - the holiday of the end of Ramadan. Festivities on this occasion usually last for several days. This is the weekend when the Maldivians are just feasting and having fun from the heart.

Visiting the Maldives in May

Weather:   May is hot, with average maximum temperatures of 31°C, but is the start of the Maldives’ official wet season and comes with risks of heavy rainfall, but storms usually move through the archipelago quickly.

Hotels:  From mid-May, hotel prices fall again by 50% and stay until early August

Things to Do:  This month has a lot going for it: Fairly reasonable prices, fewer people at the resorts and optimal surf and scuba conditions are just some of the perks.

Diving & Snorkeling:   Diving visibility is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water.

Highlights:   The holy month of Ramadan (known as Ramazan in the Maldives) begins in May although the exact date changes each year. Guests visiting Maldives’ resorts during the holy month are unlikely to notice anything different to any other month – meals and alcohol are served as usual. If you’re visiting a local island, there will be some restrictions that you’ll understandably be asked to respect.

During Ramadan, shops closer earlier and you won't be able to drink or eat in public on the inhabited islands.

Visiting the Maldives in June

Weather:   With choppy seas, hot, humid and windy weather June is the time of south-west monsoon season in Maldives. June is not the best month to travel to the Maldives, as the winds pick up, for the most part can be quite cloudy and rainfalls are frequent in June, but there is still many sunny days are common and temperatures warm too.

Things to Do:  Surf season continues in Central Male atolls and room rates remain low. Manta ray spotting season begins in the Northern Atolls. June is is an excellent time to indulge in activities like whale shark and dolphin trips, deep-sea fishing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing. The surface swells during this time can get to about 1-2m especially during June and July which is the main rainy season.

Diving & Snorkeling:   Diving visibility in June in Maldives is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water, however there’s a huge advantage for divers as manta rays and whale sharks come to feed on the plankton.

During June to November the currents move easterly through the channels. During this time Hanifaru Bay in UNESCO Biosphere reserve on Baa atoll offers some of the best sightings of mantas and whale sharks. They come to the protected area to feed on plankton that has been built up from the southwest monsoon. The underwater visibility is also much better on the western side during this season.

Visiting the Maldives in July

Weather:   With seven to eight hours of daily sunshine July is one of the rainiest months in the Maldives. The average temperature in Maldives in July ranges between 27 to 30 degrees Celsius, while the nights are relatively cooler at 25 degrees. The downpours are unpredictable but don't last more than a 30-minutes and the wind speed varies between 11 and 14 knots.

Things to Do:  The sea temperature is 28 degrees Celsius in July, making it pleasant for swimming and other water activities.

Diving & Snorkeling:   During June to November is the southwest monsoon when the currents move easterly through the channels. During this time Hanifaru Bay offers some of the best sightings of mantas and whale sharks. They come to the area to feed on plankton that has been built up from the southwest monsoon. The visibility is also much better on the western side during this season. The wind picks up during this time and the sea can get a bit rougher. There is still many sunny days but for the most part can be quite cloudy. The surface swells during this time can get to about 1-2m especially during June and July which is the main rainy season.

Highlights:   The Maldives Independence Day (26th July) is celebrated in style each year, with various festivities taking place, including parades and performances.

Visiting the Maldives in August

Weather:   Weather: Still hot and sunny August in the Maldives is humid, with an average 7 hours of sunshine each day and short heavy downpours. Expect a some showers, wind and storms, 27 - 31°C (average 29°C).

Hotels:   August is vacation time therefore, from August 1, hotel prices rise again by 45% and keep this way until September

Things to Do:  This is a great time for experienced sailors to charter a monohull if the primary goal is to challenge the wind. Otherwise, families, groups, and couples who plan to spend time relaxing on a boat will benefit from a catamaran, known for their stability, space and comfort despite windy conditions.

Diving & Snorkeling:   Scuba divers trade reduced visibility (caused by an abundance of plankton) for an increased chance to spot mammoth sea creatures like mantas and whale sharks and enticing offers mean this is still a popular time to visit.

Weather:   With the southwestern monsoon winds dominated, the weather in Maldives in September is a culmination of the wet season with frequent monsoon showers, skyrocketing humidity and slightly low temperatures in the day. A maximum day temperatures of 30°C, and there’s still an average 7 hours of sunshine each day, but rain is more likely and there is a risk of storms.

Weather:   October is the last month of the low season, that marks the end of the wet monsoon, but you can still expect severe storms and highly unpredictable weather. Highlights:   National Day in the Maldives commemorates the day Mohammed Thakurufaanu and his men overthrew the Portuguese on Male in 1578 in a mutiny that saw the islands regain independence.

Visiting the Maldives in November

Weather:   The Maldives' end of the wet season November is shoulder season, when prices start to grow again, although weather is still unpredictable and can rain for days, even though it's hot and humid. Expect short showers in the afternoons and otherwise bright, sunny days with an average maximum temperatures of 30°C.

Things to Do:  Manta ray season comes to an end at Hanifaru Bay.

Diving & Snorkeling:   The visibility of the water begins to clear of the plankton, making for good scuba-diving and snorkeling.

Highlights:   A historical event, which in the Maldives is usually called Victory Day (November 3). Republic Day (November 11) is an event of national importance in the Maldives when the re-formation of the republic of the islands is celebrated. Like Independence Day, Republic Day is celebrated with marches and parades. In addition, in the evening, official events turn into songs and dances, widespread noisy and vibrant festivities.

Food festival is dedicated to World Food Day, which is also celebrated in the Maldives.

Visiting the Maldives in December

Weather:   An excellent choice for some winter sun, the weather during December is warm with long periods of sunshine, but there is an increased likelihood of rain and storms. The latter part of the month is considerably dry with warm and pleasant days.

Hotels:  Hotels usually continue great offers until just before the Christmas peak, so earlier in the month is a good value time to travel. In contrast to the off-season (September-October), luxury resort prices in December are about 50% higher, and from December 22nd prices lifts 95% one more time with the highest offerings for Christmas and New Year eve

Diving & Snorkeling:   December starts the northeastern monsoon season in the Maldives. This time of year offers the best visibility and plankton-rich currents draw in a variety of marine life. With tons of shark action, December is the best month for diving in the far southern atolls of the Maldives. Found at these remote islands, you’ll see pelagic species making their way through channels and around pinnacles.

Why Time Is Running Out Across the Maldives’ Lovely Little Islands

To live in the Maldives is to live in one of two worlds. Either you belong to the capital — Malé, a micro-Manhattan in the Indian Ocean — or you are out in “the islands,” among the quietest and most remote villages this side of the Arctic tundra.

It is in these places — far from the archipelago’s walled-garden resort atolls, where no Maldivians actually dwell — that the country is picking between two visions of its future, like much of the rest of Asia, but more so.

The outer islands are steadily depopulating, as the appeal of making a life through tuna fishing and coconut farming along their crushed-coral seashores shrinks. The splendid isolation may be what attracts visitors, but it seems incompatible with islanders’ aspirations in a nation modernized by global tourism.

As Maldivians give up on island life, the government feels compelled to keep building up Malé, the country’s one real city. But Malé is already pressed up hard against the limits of human habitation. By some measures, it is the most densely populated island on earth, with over a third of the country’s 520,000 people on a landmass that can be crossed by foot in about 20 minutes.

If more Maldivians are going to move there, its physical structure will need to be radically reworked. In the meantime, it is sprawling outward wherever it can: The government is surrounding Malé with sea bridges to artificial islands packed with housing projects financed by China and India .

On Jan. 22, President Mohamed Muizzu announced his otherworldly vision for an undersea tunnel between Malé proper and a land-reclamation project where Chinese investors will help build 65,000 housing units on what is now barely a sandbar.

Mr. Muizzu, a civil engineer by training, said the tunnel would “provide beautiful views of the sea” as commuters passed through it. (Feasibility to be determined.)

Humay Ghafoor, a researcher who campaigns against environmental degradation, said that “nobody does any assessments” before commissioning “massive infrastructure” projects. This allows an airport, for instance, to be built over a mangrove, destroying a whole island’s freshwater supply.

The Maldives consists of a thousand islands stretched along a 550-mile axis, each one a bit of exposed coral that grew from the rims of a prehistoric range of undersea volcanoes. These form rings called atolls — a word that comes to English from the native Dhivehi language. Most of the 188 inhabited islands have fewer than 1,000 residents.

The resorts — those airy villas floating over turquoise seas — are all on technically “uninhabited” islands. The guests are foreign, and most of the staff is, too, mainly from India and Bangladesh. In some ways, the resorts are like offshore oil rigs, pumping out nearly all of the country’s income. By design, they are divorced from Maldivian culture and abstracted from their South Asian location.

The typical inhabited island is likewise rich in sunshine and warmth and has access to a shallow lagoon, palm trees and maybe a mangrove forest. The inhabitants are highly literate, many are English-speaking and they are connected to the rest of the world by the internet, mobile data and long ferry routes.

Their traditions survive, still. Perhaps every island except Malé has a holhuashi, a covered seating platform at its harbor, sometimes circled by hanging woven chairs. Men gather to rest at midday and exchange gossip.

There is little doubt that climate change will eventually bring doom to this country, most of which is just a meter or two above sea level. But that catastrophe is thought to be a century or more away.

Instead, Maldivians are leaving the islands for the sake of their children, looking to Malé and the world beyond. When it comes to education and health care, there is no substitute for city life.

Nolhivaranfaru, a fishhook-shaped bit of powdery white sand, with a green and fertile core between its beaches, is like many of the Maldives’ inhabited islands. Flowering frangipani stand over an Islamic cemetery near its piers, centered around a centuries-old shrine to an Arab pilgrim. It takes 25 minutes by speedboat to reach the nearest landmass and two airplanes from there to get to neighboring India.

That is a journey that Maryam Asima, a 30-year-old mother of twins, made at great cost and personal hardship. She and her husband, the captain of a tourist yacht that docks 175 miles away, near Malé, had been unable to conceive. Two years ago, Ms. Asima and her sister, who was in a similar position, traveled to Kochi, India, a city of 2.1 million, where they made do on their own during 11 months of IVF treatment.

Health care remains rudimentary even on the better connected of the outer islands. Staff at the local clinic scoff at the idea of someday providing IVF. They say quietly that even most emergency care is beyond them: Any patient who needs a ventilator must be flown hundreds of miles away.

Ms. Asima, now back on the island with her 6-month-old twins, says she is satisfied with the results of her ordeal. Her sister has given her a nephew, too. With her encouragement, two other women from the island have become pregnant in the same way. The government has started offering $500 subsidies and the possibility of free air travel for families that need to go abroad for IVF.

She likes the “home feeling” of her island and hopes to send her children to school there, even if they need to travel to a nearby island to see a pediatrician. But this is not her first home: Ms. Asima was born on an even smaller island, Maavaidhoo, which was abandoned after being swamped by the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004.

Many Maldivians have been on the move for a generation or more, leaving smaller communities for larger ones. More than anywhere else, those who can afford it go to Malé.

Thirty years ago, it was not unusual for families to send unaccompanied minors on long ferry journeys, of 20 hours or more, to live in Malé. They would stay with distant relatives or even strangers and work as pint-size housekeepers to pay for their room and board as they attended one of the country’s better schools.

Island families still send their children to study in Malé, but usually now they travel as teenagers; better primary schooling is available even in remote places.

The cramped conditions of the capital are the first challenge they face. A compact grid of streets jams pedestrians, motorbikes, workshops and luxury perfumers together like a miniature version of central Hong Kong. One-bedroom apartments rent for five times the starting salary of a government office worker.

Ajuvad, a nervous, soft-spoken 23-year-old, came to Malé at 16 to join his older siblings, six people crammed into three bedrooms. They are all professionals, with jobs as teachers and technicians. But they were raised in another world, a 36-hour ferry ride away. There, the beach was a five-minute walk away with no roads and no motorbikes, and their home was a four-bedroom house that their father, a fisherman, built himself. Their mother made fish paste and sold it to neighbors.

Ajuvad, who asked that his last name be withheld to protect his privacy, remembers the transition as being “quite a challenge.” Having to live without his parents, and without an inch of space to study alone in quiet, he said, “I thought my world had collapsed.”

Ahmed Abbas, a 39-year-old hardware salesman, had an easier time moving into Malé’s urban sprawl from a distant southern island 12 years ago. His family of six shares a two-bedroom apartment in a complex built by Chinese developers, across a sea bridge from the city proper. They spend only half of their income on rent, and he drives to the city, 25 minutes each way, twice a day.

Mr. Abbas studied and worked around South India for many years before settling down. He has seen enough of the world to appreciate his family’s perch, which they share with two love birds: Small, exotic pets are a big business in little Malé.

But he still misses the island life. Back home, it was “nice because the people are nice,” he said, “normal country people, all smiling.”

Bryce Canyon National Park

When May comes around in Bryce Canyon National Park, the snow is nearly gone, which means the park's main road and popular trails are likely to be open. Highs are typically in the 60s during the day, too – ideal conditions for hiking and biking this Utah park's paths. Visitor numbers start to ramp up this month, but it's still early enough in the season that you're unlikely to have to jostle for a view at the popular Bryce Point, which overlooks Bryce Amphitheater, a landscape of otherworldly rock spires (called hoodoos).

This Portuguese island chain in the Atlantic Ocean offers a little bit of everything for active travelers, from geoparks and waterfall hikes to paragliding. Though the weather here is always a bit unpredictable, the chances of wind and rain are lower in May. The water temperature also begins to warm up for must-do activities like snorkeling or swimming with dolphins, and with fewer swells than the winter months, beginner surfers will feel more comfortable trying to hang ten. As an added bonus, the biggest festival in the Azores – the Feasts of Santo Cristo dos Milagres – typically occurs in May.

Travelers looking for a vacation filled with unique and heart-pumping activities should set their sights on Cappadocia. This mountainous region in central Turkey is home to a UNESCO-listed national park, centuries-old underground cities, ancient cave dwellings, magnificent rock formations and more. Plus, thanks to average temperatures in the 60s and 70s in May, activities like soaring high above the Göreme Valley on a hot air balloon tour and driving a four-wheel-drive vehicle past fairy chimneys couldn't be more pleasant.

As one of the warmest and driest times of year in Palawan, May welcomes travelers with open arms. Take advantage of the minimal rainfall by experiencing all of the outdoor activities and attractions that this Philippine island has to offer –spoiler alert, there are a lot. Spend time relaxing on Palawan's white sand beaches, island-hopping or even swimming with gentle whale sharks. Water sports are popular in this destination as well, from diving Tubbataha Reef to kayaking El Nido's Big Lagoon.  

Visiting Granada, Spain, in May is a no-brainer. Average temperatures in the mid-70s, blooming flower displays (at Generalife Gardens) and a full roster of events make this Andalusian city a must-visit in the spring. Día de la Cruz and Feria del Corpus Christi, two of the city's most popular celebrations, are both held in May, and travelers won't want to miss seeing Granada come alive with music, flamenco dancers and more. Save time during your trip for a guided tour of the Alhambra and strolling through the Albaicín neighborhood.

May falls within this Peruvian city's winter season, though you probably wouldn't notice thanks to its consistently mild temperatures (highs hover in the 60s). This month rarely sees rain showers, and you'll encounter fewer tourists at archaeological wonders like La Catedral – which sits in the restaurant- and coffee shop-filled Plaza de Armas – and Machu Picchu – a bucket list destination and UNESCO World Heritage Site located about 50 miles northwest of Cusco. If you're up for a challenge, hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. This difficult trek through the area's towering mountains takes about four days to complete.

With 33 beaches, this eastern Caribbean island is a sun worshipper's dream, and May temperatures in the upper 70s and 80s are perfect for basking on its white sands . Spend warm days venturing to offshore cays, exploring fishing villages and watching yacht races during the Anguilla Regatta, typically held every May. Since this is the start of the island's rainy season, the weather can be wetter and more humid than the winter months, but visitors will be rewarded with cheaper accommodations. 

May is a great time for a trip to this seaside Spanish city before the heat and humidity become unbearable. Can't-miss architectural marvels to check out include Antoni Gaudí's whimsical Park Güell and the Gothic-style Sagrada Família. Budget time for visiting some of Barcelona's highly regarded museums, such as the Picasso Museum, and relax at Barceloneta beach before stopping at a nearby seafood restaurant for some of the best paella in the city. What's more, the city plays host to a number of events come May, including film and music festivals

Craggy coastline views, a world-famous aquarium and a superb farm-to-table dining scene draw tourists of all types to Monterey, California. Though temperatures here remain in the 60s for most of the year, rainfall drops significantly in May. Popular festivals also make this a great time of the year to visit. Come early in the month for the Pacific Grove Good Old Days Street Festival, which showcases local artisans and craft vendors, plus a variety of food booths. And near the end of the month, the three-day California Roots Music & Arts Festival celebrates reggae artists.

Visit Laguna Beach for a perfect sunny-and-70, laid-back beach vacation. May is part of this Southern California town's spring shoulder season, so you'll find fewer people on popular stretches of sand like Main Beach and Crescent Bay Beach. Plus, the quieter month is ideal for relaxation-focused activities, such as outdoor yoga and hiking. When travelers need a break from reconnecting with themselves or nature, they can check out Laguna Beach's thriving art scene, which includes hundreds of galleries, studios and public works of art.

Bright turquoise water, gorgeous white sand and lush green vegetation await vacationers in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Composed of 32 islands and cays, this Caribbean archipelago is perfect for a tropical getaway. May falls between the country's peak winter season and its hurricane-prone low season, making it an ideal time for scuba diving and snorkeling in the Tobago Cays Marine Park, swimming and soaking up some rays at Canouan's beaches and hiking to beautiful waterfalls like Dark View Falls. Travelers will also want to check out the country's 20-acre Botanical Gardens, the oldest available in the Western Hemisphere.

Victoria, British Columbia's capital city, sits on the southern portion of Vancouver Island. Not only does this Canadian destination boast comfortable highs in the low 60s in May, it is just a short ferry ride from Seattle (less than three hours), making it perfect for a quick weekend getaway . Spend your visit strolling through the 55-acre Butchart Gardens, which are bursting with colorful tulips and cherry blossoms come May, then get out on the water on a whale watching tour. Before heading home, don't forget to shop for souvenirs along Government Street.

Considered the birthplace of democracy and drama, Athens boasts a historical legacy that is hard to top. The main reason to visit is to see the ancient city's impressive ruins, which you'll find at the Acropolis and Ancient Agora. For an additional look at Athens' past, check out the incredible Greek artifacts on display at the National Archaeological Museum and the Benaki Museum of Greek Culture. May vacations are especially enjoyable thanks to comfortable daytime temps hovering in the mid-70s.

By late May, most of Yellowstone's trails and must-see attractions are open, welcoming eager nature enthusiasts seeking a breath of fresh air. The average 50-degree temperatures provide a brisk but comfortable atmosphere for a hike on one of the Old Faithful area's trails or a kayaking excursion on Yellowstone Lake. For a glimpse of wildlife, head to Lamar Valley to view wolf pups emerging from their dens. Keep in mind that if you visit during Memorial Day weekend, you'll likely run into crowds.

With warm weather year-round (average temperatures sit in the 80s), there's never a bad time to visit Singapore. But in May, this Asian city-state on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula welcomes events such as the Singapore Cocktail Festival, the Singapore International Festival of Arts and the Singapore HeritageFest. When you're not enjoying your time at one of Singapore's cultural events, check out top attractions like Gardens by the Bay, a futuristic nature park that is home to the Supertree Observatory and the Cloud Forest.
