Inducted: 1996

By playing pure and simple rock & roll without making an explicit issue of her gender, Joan Jett became a figurehead for several generations of female rockers. Jett’s brand of rock & roll is loud and stripped down, yet with overpowering hooks – a combination of the Stones’ tough, sinewy image and beat, AC/DC chords and glam-rock hooks. As the numerous covers she has recorded show, she adheres both to rock tradition and breaks with it – she plays classic three-chord rock & roll, yet she also loves the trashy elements (in particular, Gary Glitter) of it as well, and she plays with a defiant sneer. From her first band, the Runaways, through her hit-making days in the ’80s with the Blackhearts right until her unexpected revival in the ’90s, she hasn’t changed her music, yet she’s kept her quality control high, making one classic single (“I Love Rock-n-Roll”) along the way.

Jett was born in Philadelphia, PA; her family moved to Los Angeles when she was 12 years old. By the time she was fifteen, she had formed her first band and was performing around town. Kim Fowley, a Los Angeles record producer, discovered the band at one of their gigs and became their manager; soon, he renamed the all-female group the Runaways and secured them a contract with Mercury Records. The band released three albums that never had much commercial success in America, yet were very popular in Japan; the group were popular in both the Los Angeles hard-rock and punk scenes, which led to Jett’s production of the Germs’ first record, G.I.

The Runaways group broke up in 1980 and Jett moved to New York to begin a solo career. Teaming up with producer/manager Kenny Laguna, Jett independently released her self-titled debut album in 1980 in America, since no labels were interested in signing her. The record was a more traditional rock & roll record than the punky Runaways, yet it retained her previous band’s defiant attitude. The record sold very well for an independent release, leading to a contract with Boardwalk Records, who reissued the album under the title Bad Reputation; it soon climbed to number 51 on the American charts.

Jett formed the Blackhearts between Bad Reputation and her second album, 1981’s I Love Rock-n-Roll; the group included guitarist Ricky Byrd, bassist Gary Ryan, and drummer Lee Crystal. Released at the end of 1981, I Love Rock & Roll became her greatest success, sending her into the Top Ten. Originally the B-side of an Arrows single, the title track was an enormous success, spending seven weeks at number one in the spring of 1982. The follow-up single, a version of Tommy James & the Shondells’ “Crimson and Clover,” went Top Ten as well; a single of Gary Glitter’s “Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah),” taken from the Bad Reputation album reached number 20 in the summer of 1982. Album, released in 1983, went gold yet it had no hits that compared with either “I Love Rock & Roll” or “Crimson and Clover.”

Jett starred in Paul Schrader’s 1987 film Light of Day, which featured the Top 40 title song, yet she didn’t have another Top Ten hit until 1988, when “I Hate Myself for Loving You,” taken from the Up Your Alley album, hit number eight; the album became her second platinum record. After the album’s success, her career had another slow period, with 1990’s all-covers album The Hit List making it to number 36 and 1991’s Notorious failing to chart. Between Notorious and 1994’s Pure and Simple, a new generation of female rockers came of age and everyone from hard alternative rockers like L7 to the minimalist, riot grrl punk rockers like Bikini Kill claimed Jett and the Runaways as an influence. As a consequence, Pure and Simple received more press and positive reviews than any of her albums since the mid-’80s. In 1995, Jett recorded the live album Evilstig with the remaining members of the Gits, a Seattle punk rock band whose lead singer, Mia Zapata, was raped and murdered in 1993. Jett reunited with the Blackhearts for the 1999 album, Fetish.

1982 Summer Concert Guide

By Erik Hedegaard

Erik Hedegaard

Even though last year was financially disastrous for rock & roll tours, promoters and booking agents are gearing up for what they hope will be one of the most successful summers for concerts in years. Buoying their hopes is the larger than usual number of big-name acts hitting the road, including Elton John , Queen , Foreigner , Eric Clapton , Journey, the Clash, Ted Nugent, the Police, Fleetwood Mac, Genesis, the Doobie Brothers, Asia, REO Speedwagon, Rush, the Steve Miller Band and Crosby, Stills and Nash.

“It’s going to be amazing,” says Barry Fey of Denver’s Feyline Productions. His enthusiasm and that of other promoters around the country is based not only on the sheer quantity of artists making the rounds but also on the ever-increasing number of tours being booked into such popular outdoor facilities as Detroit’s Pine Knob, Denver’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Chicago’s Poplar Creek Music Theater and Cleveland’s Blossom Music Center. At the 8500-seat Red Rocks Amphitheatre, for example, bookings have increased from forty-one shows in 1981 to sixty-two this summer, according to Fey. And at the 7800-seat Starlight Theatre in Kansas City, Fey says, “I think we might end up having more shows in a three-month period than we usually have there during the entire rest of the year.”

These amphitheaters — which range in capacity from 7500 to 20,000 and sell tickets priced, on the average, from $8.50 to fifteen dollars — are gaining in popularity primarily because booking agents have finally realized that the teenagers who made stadium-sized shows a safe bet during the Sixties and early Seventies are now in their late twenties and early thirties and no longer in the market for a daylong boozy bash in a sun-scorched stadium or an evening spent in the distant rows of a cavernous arena.

“The people who won’t go to a Forum show or a Madison Square Garden show would definitely go see the same act in a more romantic setting, with picnic baskets and things like that,” says Tom Ross of International Creative Management (ICM), one of the country’s largest booking agencies.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

The Beach Boys, Chicago, Jimmy Buffett, Bonnie Raitt, Elton John and Crosby, Stills and Nash have all been booked into summer theaters. And though pop acts are the main staple of these venues, such hard rockers as REO Speed-wagon and Rush will also be playing them this summer. But on the whole, those groups with a large teenage audience stand as good a chance of making big bucks at a large arena like Madison Square Garden as they do at an amphitheater. “Your hard rockers — your AC/DC audience — would just as soon be inside,” says Ross.

Yet just because the amphitheater appears to be the venue of the future, large outdoor stadium shows — another vestige of the Woodstock years — have not gone completely the way of the dinosaur. In fact, some promoters think that since there have been so few large shows in recent years, they’re sort of like gold: a rarity and, thus, bankable. “When you’re talking about an outdoor show,” says promoter Jim Rissmiller of Los Angeles’ Wolf and Rissmiller, “it’s such a special event that traditional problems are thrown out the window.”

Larry Magid of Philadelphia’s Electric Factory Concerts says it takes either a package of big-name groups, one supergroup like the Rolling Stones or something very unusual to sell out a show in a place the size of Philly’s 90,000-seat JFK Stadium. His plans for JFK this summer include a $15.75-per-ticket extravaganza with Foreigner, the Kinks, Loverboy, Joan Jett and Huey Lewis and the News on June 19th. He will put on three other concerts at JFK, one of which will feature black artists and be headlined by Rick James.

“I have a good feeling about it,” says Magid of the James show. But citing the federal government’s cutback of summer jobs, he adds, “I would be crazy to say I envision 90,000 people showing up.”

Other large outdoor events planned for this summer include several of Bill Graham’s Days on the Green at the Oakland Coliseum. The first, on June 26th, will feature Journey and Santana; the show will cost $16.50, up $1.50 from last year.

Package shows are one device promoters and agents are using to try to combat the slump that hit the touring business last year, when many established artists found themselves playing to half-empty arenas. Queen, for example, will tour all summer with Billy Squier; Foreigner will do some dates with Loverboy, as well as play two 40,000-seat outdoor dates with both Squier and Loverboy; Elton John is teaming up with Quarterflash; and Journey will have Sammy Hagar on its bill for a few dates.

Lou Gramm on Foreigner's Long-Awaited Rock Hall Induction: 'Justice Has Been Done'

See elton john play 'the bitch is back' — as a hornet — for the first time in 1974, what a no-show concert can teach a brand about crisis management 101.

“The continuation of packaging will definitely help business,” says New York promoter Ron Delsener, who will again present a series of outdoor concerts in Manhattan this summer. “You’ve got to double up.” Furthermore, says ICM’s Ross, a package bill “will justify a higher price [in most cases, a dollar more], give the kids a better show and safety-valve the careers of both acts.” Indeed, one of Ross’ most successful tours last year was a tandem package with Jefferson Starship and .38 Special.

Joan Jett is an American rock singer, guitarist and song-writer, best known for her work with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. She is considered a musical icon, often cited as being the Queen of Rock and Roll.

Jett formed the Blackhearts by placing an ad in the LA Weekly, stating that she was looking for ‘three good men’. Her search eventually led her to a local bass player called Gary Ryan, guitarist Eric Ambel and drummer Danny "Furious" O'Brien. The band began performing in the US, playing gigs in places such as the Golden Bear in California and The Whisky a Go Go in Hollywood. They soon embarked on a European tour, performing in countries such as the Netherlands and England. Upon returning to the US, Jett, Ryan, and Ambel moved to Long Beach, New York. O’Brien stayed in England and was soon replaced by drummer Lee Crystal.

After a year of recording, and another member replacement, the band released an album entitled ‘I Love Rock 'n' Roll’ for their new label Boardwalk Records. The album was a hit and the first single from the album, ‘I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll’ was number one for an incredible seven weeks in a row. The song has sat among the Billboard's top 100 of all time.

A string of hits followed, all of which made it into the Top 40. The band also headlined a number of tours, all of which sold out due to high popularity. Collaborative tours with legends such as Aerosmith, Queen and The Police have reiterated the band's success.

Live reviews

It says a lot about Joan Jett’s standing that she was one of four singers invited to play with Nirvana on their induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this year; relative to the other three performers, it was obvious which role she was filling. Lorde’s selection spoke to the band’s pop sensibilities, St. Vincent’s to their eccentricity and creative potency. Kim Gordon, having toured with Nirvana many a time in the early nineties, was the alternative icon amongst the four, but Joan Jett? She was the good, old-fashioned, no-strings-attached rock icon; that’s how the music world views her these days. She’s showing no signs of slowing down, either, continuing to tour with the Blackhearts as her backing band. She plays as mean a guitar as ever, but perhaps the most impressive aspect of her sheer endurance is that her voice, if anything, sounds better than it ever did; more than you can say for many of her contemporaries. Set-wise, the classics are all present and correct - ‘Cherry Bomb’, ‘Bad Reputation’ and ‘I Love Rock and Roll’ included - and a hefty selection of covers are currently making the cut, too, from the obscure - their current closing number is a take on Sly and the Family Stone’s ‘Everyday People’ - to the possibly ill-advised - Gary Glitter’s ‘Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)’.

The issue I had wasn't even the concert at Fremont Street Experience, but the lack of knowledge of the location, stage-wise, and exact time she would be playing there! The sponsoring casino told me that she would be there between 6 and 7 pm, as I was there at 5:45...and I ended up seeing two high school (house) rock bands play for an hour, and that was it!

I ended up finally locating the correct stage, and, because of the misdirection, was put WAY BACK in the general admission standing room only area, thanks to this mistake...and the F S E SECURITY told me someone was selling half-price 'passes' to stand up front to see her right at the stage...which I also could not locate and left the Fremont Street staging area very upset with this lack of co-ordination between those setting it up, and Joan Jett, who I MISSED ENTIRELY due to this error!

Anything that could be done, an autograph, t-shirt, souvenir, something maybe showing that I made a valiant attempt at trying to meet and greet Joan for 52 years (yes, I'm that old!), would be appreciated, and well worth the time to smooth out these overlooked issues!

What can I say for sure? I love Joan Jett. Literally I have been listening to her music since I was in the womb and I never turned back. Last night was the 7th time I have seen her in concert and I have never been disappointed with Joan Jett and The Blackheart's live performances.

Her stage presence and charisma create a bubble between her fans and the world when she is playing and it's an amazing feeling.

She did the crowd lover's songs including "I Love Rock and Roll, "Crimson and Clover", as well as Bad Reputation, and The Mary Tyler Moore theme song.

I had the best seats ever because I asked my Mom kindly if I could pay the rent late to buy better seats. She agreed, and I was ever so grateful when I say we were only about 10 rows back.

I met and saw many interesting and groovy people, her concerts never cease to amaze me.

This will be my 3rd Joan Jett concert. I admit it has been 25 yrs since my last, but I can NOT GET OVER that her performance is that of a 30 yr old. She rocks now as much as she did when I last saw her. I have seen many "bigger" names, but as I have told people before....she puts on the best show ! I am so glad that I went. I can not get over how hard she works. I would have expected a slower pace song such as Little Liar to help catch her breath and conserve energy but it never came. Must admit, I missed that song. But, she never slowed down. Trust me, I am a renewed Joan Jett concert goer. I am looking forward to my next. JOAN RULES !

The old Runaway still rocks. Of course she got everyone up and grooving with Bad Reputation and I Love Rock and Roll. The tunes from way back were real highlights.

Victim of Circumstance was a perfect way to open the rockin' show. Dougie Needles can rip the guitar as good as anyone.

Her choice of songs to cover is right on the mark too. Standard covers of Crimson and Clover and Do You Want to Touch Me were solid. The choice to include Sly Stone's Everyday People was an off the charts great choice. Especially given the times we are living in. Jam On Joan.

A lot of these old rockers are simply touring nostalgia acts, giving boomers and early X-ers an evening of recalling their glory days, without all of the fire and passion that the bands once possessed. That is not Joan Jett. She still brings the heat. Her band plays hard and fast and is tight as hell. For someone who has been on the scene for over 42 years, she doesn't appear to be tired, worn out, or in any hurry to slow down. Joan still delivers stripped down, honest, no holds barred, without pretension or sentimentality. Highly recommended.

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts killed it! They played all the big hits from Joan Jett's career, and cool b sides as well. They we're opening for Boston at this show, and they were great as well. We saw this show at the Ironstone Amphitheatre, and purcahsed our tickets off of Groupon. We were told at the door that our tickets were not ligit, and made us walk arround the ENTIRE VENUE to the other line, were the ticket lady just let us in. Joan Jett and Boston were great, but the experience leading up to it was not.

Called "rock royalty" by her fans, Joan Jett proved to her Northern California audience that she has got what it takes to put on an amazing show. Both her new songs like TMI and her standards brought fans to their feet. She has a tight, responsive band that made classics like I Love Rock and Roll come alive. After last night's show I will definitely be purchasing her new CD and won't miss an opportunity to catch this punk princess again.
