  • Wander22268036041 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A wonderful evening, great food & entertainment Had a wonderful evening out with my wife. The service was excellent. We were seated timely near the stage. Ethan our waiter was attentive and provided excellent suggestions for our meals which we both really enjoyed. The portions were plenty and very tasty. The Hooley show was very entertaining with the 4 piece band providing high quality music and some comedic value as well. The dancers too were great and helped top off a great date night for our anniversary evening! Highly recommend! Read more Written April 25, 2024
  • TracyJhb 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fabulous evening out at Johnny Fox We took my family visiting from South Africa for an evening out. And what a wonderful evening we had. We were seated right alongside the stage, and had to almost dodge the flying feet of the super talented dancers. The evening progressed perfectly, and the servers were very attentive. The food service began on time, and we were finished our desserts before the dancing began. The food was delicious and plentiful, and there were no delays whatsoever with anything. The music and musicians were fabulous. We had such a fun night out and would highly recommend it! Read more Written April 25, 2024
  • A7166UBannek 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Big disappointment- terrible seating The food was very good. The show would have been good if we had the opportunity to enjoy it. We sat against the back wall and s side wall blocking our view.. Three in our party faced the wall. The food was served to us as the show started so the three what faced the wall couldn’t turn around because they were eating. They turned their chairs for the dancing even though they didn’t finish dessert. The next issue was the servers constantly walking back and forth in front of us . Except for one other table next to us all the other tables were in front of us. The space between us and those tables was the walkway for the servers and guests going to the bathroom. We told the manager what our issue was. He offered us a space in the front corner that had chair and couch seating. The reason it was empty is that your view from their is from behind the dancers. We spent over $500 for a very disappointing evening. We booked Johnny Fox’s 2 months ago only to be seated at a table that should not be used fo watch the show. This was supposed to be our big night out on our visit to Ireland A positive: the shuttle bus in all respects was top notch. Read more Written April 24, 2024
  • megana320 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent fun with a taste of Irish heritage Took my Scottish mother to the Hooley to celebrate her 70th and we all had a great time. Staff were friendly and attentive. They had little lights on the table to flip over when you needed service, which worked great didn't wait long at all. Food was excellent quality pub food. The lamb shank fell of the bone and all fish items were delicious. My step father particularly loved the music being a musician himself and requested a couple of songs, which the band happily played. All in all, it was a great evening and would definitely take visiting friends again. Read more Written April 23, 2024
  • johnfB6656NA 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles A Rip Off and Disgraceful Service Attended the Holley on Friday night. Service disgraceful and food of “canteen quality”. Ordered bottle of Chablis wine and waitress “Mary” brought bottle of cheaper and not Chablis and tried to persuade me it was Chablis After 3 visits from other staff with same message a manager arrived to confirm that the bottle was not in fact Chablis as ordered. We waited 1 hour 45 minutes for main course. Music was OK. Food quality was no more than “canteen” standard. 0verall the visit was a disaster and never again. Read more Written April 13, 2024
  • linah454 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Great entertainment, poor logistics and meals from the restaurant. The pub had misplaced our booking (which we had already paid a € 100 deposit on), so they squeezed us in at the middle of a narrow table. We had also given the pub our allergies, which were not followed up since they didn’t have our booking.. The food was alright, however the portions were too big. Non of us in our company of 3 could finish any of our meals. The meals were simple with the same sides to all the meals (mash potatoes, boiled vegetables, gravy and the protein). A bit overpriced. The entertainment however was worth the poor meal experience. The river dance was an amazing show! They all had a glint in their eye and made the guests join in the experience. • CheshireDancingqueen 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Just fabulous at Johnnie Fox’s We have been into this lovely establishment for a drink on a few occasions and always said we should give the Hooley night a go, this time we did and had a fantastic evening. We booked return transfer from the centre of Dublin. Very reasonable and well worth it, completely takes the hassle out of driving along dark narrow winding lanes. Very efficient pick up and drop off by our very friendly driver. Taking into account that the Hooley night is very touristy, it was really well organised. You are warmly welcomed and shown to a communal table, I was wearing a boot and using a crutch and the team were very attentive to make sure I was comfortable. With so many people sitting on long tables they have a clever light on tables that you leave ‘white’ to show that all is ok and then turn to ‘red’ when you need to order drinks etc. Our food was good, we both had prawn salad to start and then roast chicken with mash and roasted vegetables, followed by banoffee pie and apple pie. All good sized portions and served piping hot. The entertainment was very good, the band were excellent, Geoff, Mags, Jenny and Ray were fabulous. Followed by some excellent Irish dancing. All the dancers were very good, very polished, although I did wonder what the young gentleman and lady were saying to each other whilst still maintaining a smile. It was then back to more music by Geoff and Ray to finish the night, the last few songs were more ‘crowd pleasers’ to allow a good old sing along. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening and the star of the show was our waitress Lily May. What a delightful young lady, so friendly and genuine, an absolute credit to the establishment. Highly recommend a visit. Read more Written April 2, 2024
  • johnkY4264IR 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Great place, rude server Excellent restaurant. Have been here many times over the years and the food is always fantastic. Despite not booking a table on Saturday and were welcomed fully at the door and sat at a nice table away from the music when we asked to move. Food and atmosphere was exceptional. Although, my wife was left embarrassed when our server asked us how much we would like to tip. We would have gladly tipped but I found it very rude that he would ask especially after mixing up our order, but this could have been due to the language barrier. We found him exceptionally rude because we could hear how he spoke to other staff members ordering them around, if he was my manager I wouldn’t be working there long. Overall, disappointing service but brilliant otherwise. Read more Written April 2, 2024
  • smilerm 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great craic & ceol I love this place and usually go to the Hooley night when I am home. I went with my boyfriend, Mam & Dad on our last night of our holidays back home. This was an especially great visit! We got there a little bit early which is always awkward especially when it's cold out so really don't arrive early would be my advice.... but after having our drinks we made our way into the Hooley room and were greeted warmly by a lovely girl (didn't get her name because my mother was gushing about her being a Saoirse Ronan lookalike and was very starstruck...) we got great seats at the front and were welcomed by our waitress Lily May. She was our star of the evening, really fantastic, very efficient, super nice and most importantly a bit of craic. We really really appreciated how attentive she was all night and we didn't go thirsty at any stage. The food was delicious, we had mussels and prawn cocktail starters, 4 x lamb shank for mains and whiskey cake & banoffi for desserts... all delicious as usual. The band were phenomenal as always although different from last time (except Ray), it was Ray, Caoimhe, Paddy & Claire.... all really fantastic and a great bit of craic.... the Irish dancing was the best it has ever been ... really enjoyable with highly skilled talented dancers.... I can't speak to the transfer as my Dad drove us this time again but it was another really great night and I will of course be back again when I am next home!! Read more Written March 27, 2024
  • 662erikaj 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Do some more research! For starters, they charged us for our food when I thought that was included in the price. The food was not great, very bland with minimal flavor. Be prepared to sit for 3+ hours in a chair that’s uncomfortable to say the least. If you don’t like tight spaces / crowded places, reconsider. We left after the live songs and didn’t get to stay for the dancers because we were very hungry and uncomfortable so we opted to leave. I think the concept / idea is great and full of local culture. However, the show is very long, compacted space, and uncomfortable. Read more Written March 25, 2024

Scottie Scheffler's run conjures memories of Tiger Woods and the Desert Fox, Johnny Miller

johnny foxes tour

Who will Scottie Scheffler follow?

Tiger Woods or Johnny Miller?

One of the two or three best golfers of all time (yes, Tiger). Or merely a great golfer, Hall of Famer in fact, who still seemed to have underachieved, given how great he was at his best (Johnny).

Or maybe somewhere between?

Scheffler recently won his second major championship, which was his ninth career PGA Tour victory, and followed it up with this past week’s win in Hilton Head to continue his current streak of head-turning greatness: Four wins and a runner-up in his last five starts.

We can go back 25 years (Tiger) and 50 years (Johnny) to find similar post-WWII streaks, as well as two eventual career paths that suggest you just never know what happens next.

1999: Tiger Woods begins his run of steady dominance

Tiger Woods was an established star within the golf world before he even turned pro. A few early wins confirmed that his golf would transfer well to the play-for-pay game, but then came the 1997 Masters, where he lapped the field and became much more than just a “golf world” star.

He would play 10 more majors without a victory (and win just once in 1998) until the 1999 PGA Championship, which was his second major and 10th overall PGA Tour win. Similar mileposts to Scheffler's, though at 23, Tiger was four years younger than Scottie today.

In ’99, after winning the PGA and finishing 37th the following week, Tiger would win his last four starts of the Tour season, as well as the season-ending World Cup of Golf. He’d also open the next season with wins in his first two official PGA Tour starts.

Scheffler’s streak of four wins in five starts is now on hold as he goes home to Texas to await the birth of his first child. His next start will be the third week of May at the PGA Championship in Louisville.

His tee-to-cup brilliance in this extended stretch hasn’t been seen since any number of great stretches Tiger put together during his unmatched run from 1999-2009. It’s one thing to get wins in bunches, but quite another to have a bunch of bunches, as Tiger did.

Fifty years ago, another future Hall of Famer won in bunches — a couple of times, in fact. But Johnny Miller’s career arc never stretched too far without a detour, and serves as a cautionary tale that no matter the brilliance of the maestro, you never know when the music might stop playing.

1974: The Desert Fox threatens the Golden Bear’s reign … for a while

Johnny Miller’s third professional win came in his fifth season and was the first of his two majors — the 1973 U.S. Open, where he shot an unthinkable 63 at beastly Oakmont on Sunday.

Three years later he won his 18th Tour event and his second major, the British Open. It would be his last win of the decade. Shaky putting strokes have ruined many a golf game at all levels, but this time they derailed one of the great runs of golf in PGA Tour history.

Unlike Tiger on many occasions and Scheffler of late, where lengthy streaks of great play and victories encompassed various types of golf courses, Miller’s domain was the western United States, particularly the Desert West.

Along with the old Bing Crosby Pro-Am at Pebble Beach, near Miller's Northern California hometown, Johnny ruled in Tucson, Phoenix and Palm Springs. He won his first three starts of ’74 and three of his first four the next year, shooting a cumulative 49 under par at Phoenix and Tucson and winning those two tournaments by a total of 25 strokes.

Through his golfing exploits and that Sears line of Johnny Miller Menswear, he was becoming the new face of golf, and at times making it look easier than anyone should. He was the first "Next Jack Nicklaus."

“For his next trick,” Dan Jenkins wrote during the early-’74 blitz, “Miller will win a tournament by mail.”

Johnny won two of his first four starts in ’76 — Tucson and Palm Springs, naturally — but showed signs of considerable cooling that was interrupted in July by his second major, the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. And that was it for three years.

The ugly word is “yips,” the age-old malady that can affect folks in various walks of life, particularly athletics. Whether it’s shooting a free throw, throwing the ball to first base or, in this case, making a 3-foot putt, the seemingly mundane becomes daunting because the brain-to-hands wiring has short-circuited.

Johnny battled them, made some headway, and in the 1980s he won sporadically, including a 1987 win at Pebble Beach after a four-year winless drought. That was surely it, everyone assumed, but in one of the most unlikely wins ever, he won Pebble again seven years later with a putting stroke that belonged on a pipefitter.

How improbable was it? Well into his NBC broadcasting career, Miller had made just five Tour starts between 1990-94 before that last win.

Which way for Scottie Scheffler?

Scheffler’s roll call of wins is somewhat similar to Miller’s: Over the past 26 months, he’s won four tournaments twice each — The Masters, Phoenix, Bay Hill and The Players Championship.

He also dealt with a balky putter last year, though those issues have subsided enough for him to flourish. He’s currently 93rd on Tour in “shots gained: putting,” which doesn’t sound great, until you recall he was No. 162 last season.

Injuries and perhaps personal issues can hamstring a career, as they did with Tiger, but an ill-wired putting stroke can send it flailing. Keeping peace with those gremlins will likely be key to Scheffler’s future path.

Read more Written 25 April 2024
Read more Written 25 April 2024
Read more Written 24 April 2024
Read more Written 23 April 2024
Read more Written 13 April 2024
Read more Written 2 April 2024
Read more Written 2 April 2024
Read more Written 27 March 2024
Read more Written 25 March 2024
