Loki's most ambitious scheme begins in 'Journey Into Mystery by Kieron Gillen: The Complete Collection Vol. 1'

Loki’s most ambitious scheme begins in ‘Journey Into Mystery by Kieron Gillen: The Complete Collection Vol. 1’

This book is just as good as it’s hyped up to be.

journey into mystery 15

From 2011 to 2015, readers across Marvel were granted something that only comes around on the rarest of occasions: a complete and emotional character arc, with a beginning, middle, and end. From Journey into Mystery through Young Avengers until the final issue of Loki: Agent of Asgard , Thor’s reborn brother sought to make something different of himself, and succeeded. And yes, it’s disappointing that we didn’t get to see a continuation of this story after the line-wide relaunch after Secret Wars , but over just a handful of years, Loki became Marvel’s most engaging and well-written character. And it all started with the contents of this collection.

Journey Into Mystery by Kieron Gillen: The Complete Collection Vol. 1

Marvel Comics

Right off the bat, Journey Into Mystery feels unlike what you’d expect from a Marvel comic in 2011. The first few pages are dedicated to a myth-like opening, telling of magpies and a fatal journey through all the realms. And right away, Gillen makes it clear that we’re not just getting some old Thor-style mythological story. Because Loki is not where he’s supposed to be — he’s off arguing with people on the internet who are calling him a troll.

Kieron Gillen, writer of works like The Wicked + The Divine,   Phonogram,  and Young Avengers, is notably well-versed in the modern internet-infused culture. He’s not the youngest person in the world, and can’t lend a real authenticity to the voice of a teenage Zoomer, but he’s able to capture the voices of these ancient beings who are still children incredibly well. Loki and Leah are a delightful pair, whose banter both with each other and with the adults around them would be able to carry the book even outside of its strong plotting.

But of course, it doesn’t have to — the plot makes sure that you need to read the next issue, which is an especially strong feat when the entire front half of the collection is event tie-ins. It’s really strange, honestly — the first eight issues are all Fear Itself tie-ins, but we never actually read the main story of Fear Itself . So a lot of the actions the characters take and a lot of the events they react to are implied, which I’m sure would lead to a little bit of a disorienting experience to someone not expecting it. I can’t really speak to that experience, though, because I knew how it’d be going in. It helps that there’s a little recap page to start the collection that explains the inciting events of Fear Itself , but there are still events like Thor’s death that are not depicted and instead just mentioned in passing. It’s in no way a fault of Gillen’s writing itself, but it’s one of the very few negatives of this collection.

Journey Into Mystery by Kieron Gillen: The Complete Collection Vol. 1

The only other partially negative facet of this book is the art team and stylistic shift. We start off with Doug Braithwaite’s beautiful artwork that makes everything seem larger than life and mythological, but before the first arc ends we’re treated with a replacement in Whilce Portacio — who’s not a bad artist on his own, but stylistically clashes with Braithwaite. There’s also an issue drawn by Mitch Breitweiser, which is… uncomfortable in 2021, as his very blatant Comicsgate leanings are hard to ignore. But again, that’s not a fault of this book at the time it was created, and understanding that Breitweiser hadn’t gone full mask-off when he drew for Journey Into Mystery lets me personally appreciate his artwork in this specific book.

At the end of all of this, though, the book still holds up, which isn’t a huge surprise — Gillen’s only become a bigger deal in the decade since this run started. This run isn’t some underrated hidden gem or anything — it’s one of Marvel’s surprise hits that had a legitimate and noticeable effect on the comics they produced for years after it finished, and this Complete Collection is the most convenient way to read it (or it will be when the second volume comes out).

Loki's most ambitious scheme begins in 'Journey Into Mystery by Kieron Gillen: The Complete Collection Vol. 1'

Search Guide

Journey Into Mystery

Journey Into Mystery went through a couple of different incarnations before the much fabled issue #83 - which brought the world the introduction of one of the most iconic of Marvel superheroes... The Mighty THOR !

Beginning in 1952 after Timely Comics had given up it's superhero titles which made them popular in 1940's, and had trasitioned to the mantle of Atlas Comics, JIM was initially a suspense/horror title.

Many creative holdovers from the Timely era contributed to the book (Carl Burgos, Bill Everett, Syd Shores), along with many future and established superstars (Russ Heath, Joe Maneely, Reed Crandall, Gray Morrow).

Later, around issue #50 or so, in the lead up to the revival of Marvel Comics, the book became a sci-fi/monster comic, and many members of the famous "bullpen," (Joe Sinnott, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Dick Ayers, Don Heck - and of course Stan Lee) gradually started finding more and more work in JIM's pages.

Finally, after the success of the re-launch of the superhero genre with the Fantastic Four , Spider-Man , etc., THOR was debuted in August of 1962 and would be the main attraction for the duration of the book's life (issue #125, February 1966).

Thor would immediately go on to have his own long-running title, but it was in Journey into Mystery that he first came into prominence, with a whole universe being created around Thor, whose earthly guise was partially lame Dr. Donald Blake, and would be established as a "God on Earth" - a popular and recurring Marvel theme - with many elements from Norse mythology being prominent, and many supporting characters being drawn from that well.

It was Journey where we first saw his mythical homeland, Asgard, encountered Loki - Thor's brother and arch nemesis - and father Odin (among many others).

And of course it wouln't be Marvel if your main character was not subject to many personal conflicts, like Don Blake's ongoing tentative relationship with nurse Jane Foster. Additionally, Thor would encounter many Earth-bound baddies, such as Radioactive Man, Lava Man, Mister Hyde, The Cobra, Grey Gargoyle, Absorbing Man... and also epic encounters with Hulk and Hercules!

Thor in Journey Into Mystery set the pace for all future "God" books, and most of the issues are worth some money, depending on condition...see some going prices for your issues here, in Quality Comix's online price guide!

What's Journey Into Mystery #11 worth in 2024?

The top grade available for this issue is a VF+ 8.5 with no sales data on file. The single VF 8.0 below it set the top price of $5,201 in 2013. That's an impressive value for the top end considering that a FN 6.0 goes for $900 in today's market! Other grades for this issue showed flat growth, though it's important to note it has a limited market with only 21 registered copies available.

What's Journey Into Mystery #12 worth in 2024?

The single copy of this issue graded at VF+ 8.5 set the historical high with a sale of $460 back in 2002. The current market for lower grades is catching up to that 2002 value, suggesting potential for future sales at that high end. FN 6.0 tripled in value from $100 in 2010 to today's $300, while VG/FN 5.0 provided a net of $100 from $120 in 2012 to today's $220.

Story by Carl Wessler, who would go on to be a key writer for the Tales From the Crypt series.

What's Journey Into Mystery #13 worth in 2024?

There are sixteen registered copies of this book on file, and the only data available is for three sales! VG 4.0 set the top price of $300 in 2015. A year earlier in 2014, 5.5 FN- went for a lesser value of $290. In between, VG+ 4.5 sold for around $70. Given the value we've seen for other early issues in this series, it could be a great buy low opportunity in a blind market.

This issue features pencils by John Forte, best known as the key artist for the early Legion of Super-Heroes series.

What's Journey Into Mystery #14 worth in 2024?

This could make you think the $2,100 sale was an outlier, but the market suggests otherwise. FN 6.0 rocketed from $90 in 2003 to today's value of $925 for an increase over 900% and a net close to $1,000!

What's Journey Into Mystery #16 worth in 2024?

Like other issues at this time period for the series, #16 returned plenty of profit. The top sell price of $1,912 was set by a FN- 5.5 issue in 2015. This sale rocketed past the 2007 price of $359 for the much higher graded FN/VF 7.0! At the lower VG 4.0 grade, a 2011 price of $60 moved to today's $500 for over 700% profit! The three highest grades have no sales history available, suggesting some serious value potential at the top end market.

The "Vampire Tale" story in this issue is written by Stan Lee.

Like other issues at this point in the series, the very top grades are much lower in price than higher quality grades thanks to the passing of time. Lower grades showed lots of fluctuation, stabilizing at overall flat growth in the current market.

What's Journey Into Mystery #118 worth in 2024?

It was likely a good day for someone in 2007 when a NM+ 9.6 Journey Into Mystery #118 sold for $3,884. The value dropped and leveled off a few years later. An FN 6.0 copy is probably not a collector’s first choice, since the selling prices ranged from a low of $31 in 2007, to a high of $86 in 2018. Although no GD 2.0 sellers offered a copy recently, the GD/VG 3.0 books that sold ranged in price from a high of $45 in 2016 to the 2019 low of $38.

This issue is the first time that we are introduced to the Destroyer, and to Odinsleep. Thor’s hammer and strength initially have no effect on the Destroyer, likely keeping readers in suspense. The series of events and hope of the Destroyer to kill Thor are not enough to keep up the value on this issue.

Loki Recap: Which One of Us Are You?

journey into mystery 15

Well, readers! Sometimes one must admit when one is wrong. While it certainly seems likely that we’ll never see Hunter C-20 again, Hunter B-15 did indeed survive the climactic brawl of last week’s episode . Even more surprising, Mobius lives as well!

This week’s episode is titled after the comic book that started it all for Marvel’s iteration of Norse mythology. Thor first appeared in Journey Into Mystery No. 83 , cover dated August 1962, and Loki himself showed up only a couple of months later, in No. 85.

journey into mystery 15

Marvel’s Asgardian exploits continued in that book until No. 126, when it was officially renamed Thor , and Loki of course continued to guest star there throughout. Loki would eventually star in his own Journey Into Mystery (affectionately shortened to JiM ) series in 2011, which laid much of the groundwork to modernize him. As an episode title, “Journey Into Mystery” makes a charming nod to the character’s history.

In last week’s episode, Loki awoke after being “pruned” (TVA parlance for erasing a variant from the timeline) to find three — excuse me, four other Lokis before him. Classic Loki, resembling the art above, was played by Richard E. Grant, Boastful Loki by DeObia Oparei, and Kid (or rather, King) Loki by Jack Veal. The fourth, a Loki who is also an alligator, was added digitally, but does have a real-life counterpart:

Pruning, it would seem, is not immediately fatal for Loki (any of them). In fact, it’s not immediately fatal for anyone , technically; this episode reveals that when a person or place is pruned, they are sent to a place at the end of time called The Void, a broken wreck of a world preyed upon by a large, hungry cloud monster known as Alioth (pronounced similarly but not exactly like goliath). Alioth consumes variants that are sent to The Void, devouring them and leaving behind only battered wrecks of metal and stone. Because Alioth is a singular, if very large, creature, this predation is not perfect. One can flee Alioth and continue to do so, scrambling across the wreckage of the The Void, if one is smart and lucky. Lokis are generally both of those things, and so, as of this episode, we have not just four additional Lokis, but many .

When these first four rescue our Loki, they decamp to Kid Loki’s throne, located in a bunker underground. There, the others share their stories. Boastful Loki is the most Thor-like of them, boisterous and loud, telling stories of his exploits. Classic Loki is a sadder, somber figure, having spent untold ages living in isolation rather than continue the vicious cycle of plot and failure that our Loki has slowly been awakening to. Kid Loki, styled as a King here, killed his version of Thor. We do not, unfortunately, learn how Alligator Loki came to be; he’s treated largely as a sight gag, with the idea that one simply shouldn’t question it — of course there’s an Alligator Loki. Why wouldn’t there be? At any rate, Loki attempts to hatch a plan to kill Alioth so that they can all escape. The others, having been in The Void longer, laugh him out of the room, and so he sets off away from them to do the job himself, only to run into the rest of the Lokis.

MCU teaser footage has always been great at a bait and switch. We’ve known that we would see a version of Loki known as President Loki since before the show started, and those teasers certainly made the idea seem prominent! Here we learn the truth: that Loki (also played by Hiddleston) is the leader of a splinter faction of Lokis stranded in The Void, who arrive to challenge Kid Loki for the throne, such as it is. This results in a brawl that Classic Loki, Kid Loki, Alligator Loki, and our Loki escape from, before subsequently encountering both Mobius and Sylvie, who has recently pruned herself, after extracting the truth of pruning from Ravonna Renslayer.

Ah, Renslayer. First, can we just take some time to appreciate what a great name that is? It just rolls off the tongue. Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays the character delightfully throughout the series, and this episode is no exception. She’s a staunch authoritarian at every turn, continually trying to play even the most dire situations to her advantage. Even when the Timekeepers are revealed to be robotic fakes, she holds true to her ideals, using the power of the TVA at her fingertips to maintain order so that she can figure out what the truth is. She’s a fine foil for any Loki, really, every bit as crafty and capable as they are.

I particularly liked the scene with her and Hunter B-15 in this episode. As B-15 points out that she and Sylvie are aiming to uncover the same truths, she tells Renslayer that Sylvie will win. When asked why, she says because Renslayer only wants to know the truth, but Sylvie needs to. It’s a question of priorities — Renslayer isn’t willing to let go of the power she wields in order to single-mindedly chase that truth, while Sylvie pointed the business end of a Hunter weapon at herself in order to find it. It’s also a move that says something about Sylvie as a character, since Renslayer pruned her entire home when she was a child. Single-minded revenge would’ve meant Renslayer dying on the spot last episode, but instead Sylvie kept her alive, pumped her for information, and fled, chasing the true goal, the mystery of the Timekeepers, beyond The Void.

This brief scene is all we see of B-15 this episode, but she did indeed survive, which is important. Given that Mobius leaves The Void for the TVA, it’s a fair bet both of them will play a role in the series finale next week.

Back in the Void, the team of surviving Lokis hatch a plan. Sylvie believes she can enchant Alioth, who is essentially functioning as a guard dog between The Void and whatever future the Timekeepers are weaving beyond it, and thus gain access to that future. Of course, Alioth is very large, and very hungry. Loki attempts a distraction, waving a flaming short sword given to him by Kid Loki, but it’s not enough; Alioth continues to pursue Sylvie. It very nearly becomes a disaster, but for the last-minute save of Classic Loki, who specializes in illusion magic. He weaves a massive image of Asgard before Alioth, presenting a target entirely too tempting, if ephemeral.

This allows our Loki to reunite with Sylvie, who points out that as a Loki, he can do everything she can, even if his specialties are different. It’s a cute bit, and it sort of recalls the fact that he has used enchantment before, albeit with one of the Infinity Stones. At any rate, there is a final scene of dramatic, paired magic-working, and the two of them are able to take control of Alioth, causing the flaming-orange smoke monster to turn a brilliant emerald. It’s unfortunately too late for Classic Loki, but it’s an impressive scene all the same, as the smoke parts to reveal the final destination of Loki, Sylvie, and the series: a journey into the mystery of an unknown future.

Synopsis [ ]

Loki tries to escape The Void , a desolate purgatory where he meets variant versions of himself.

Loki in the void

Loki has landed in the Void , a mysterious realm inhabited by an aggressive storm-like entity known as Alioth . He joins fellow Variants Classic Loki , Kid Loki , Boastful Loki and Alligator Loki in a run from the amorphous beast. At the Time Variance Authority , Sylvie Laufeydottir interrogates Ravonna Renslayer in her courtroom as to the agency's origins, but finds Renslayer is also clueless. Renslayer reveals to Sylvie that Loki is still alive in a void at the end of time, where the contents of branched realities are sent.

Sylvie prunes herself

As the five Lokis traverse through the temporal wasteland, Loki attempts to devise a plan to escape back to the TVA, suggesting they intentionally cause a Nexus Event. However, he is shut down by the others. They eventually come across a hatch and descend towards the bunker underground. Meanwhile, Renslayer directs Miss Minutes to retrieve classified information about the agency's origins. As the end of time remains to be determined, Sylvie realizes that no one can cause any Nexus Events in the Void. When Sylvie proposes to go through the Void, Miss Minutes begins to "search" for fake files regarding a "Void Timecraft," but actually summons a team of Minutemen . Renslayer betrays Sylvie. When prompted by Renslayer to surrender herself into confinement in a Time Cell , Sylvie prunes herself instead.

Mobius driving crazy

In the bunker, the Lokis socialize, sharing their origins, when Loki abruptly leaves to escape the Void by killing Alioth. The other Lokis, knowing such a feat is impossible, erupt in laughter. Loki encounters President Loki and his army of Loki Variants upon opening the exit hatch. They enter the bunker. Elsewhere, Sylvie lands in The Void near Alioth; while fleeing, she receives a vision of an uncharted citadel after coming into contact with the beast. Mobius M. Mobius arrives in a pizza delivery car to retrieve her. Believing that heading toward Alioth would be the only way out of the Void, Sylvie convinces Mobius to turn the car toward the beast.

Journey Into Mystery 12

Boastful Loki reveals that he has led President Loki and his army to the bunker in exchange for the Void's throne. However, President Loki reveals that he deceived Boastful Loki, attempting to keep the throne and army. In turn, President Loki's army turns on him, and Alligator Loki bites his hand off, leading to a brawl for power. Classic Loki conjures illusions of himself, Loki, Kid Loki, and Alligator Loki while leading them outside via portal. Classic and Kid Loki subsequently agree to help Loki approach Alioth. On the way, they witness a crewed ship materialize in Alioth's path, which swiftly turns it into a pile of scrap, leaving no survivors. The four then encounter Mobius and Sylvie and plan to deal with Alioth using Sylvie's enchantment.

Renslayer approaches a captive Hunter B-15 inside a Time Theatre, wanting to learn what influences Sylvie's campaign. B-15, knowing Renslayer and Sylvie both seek the TVA's origins, reveals to her that revenge against the agency is the driving factor behind it. Leaving the room, Renslayer contacts Miss Minutes and asks her to retrieve all files surrounding the beginning of time and the agency's origins.

Journey Into Mystery 03

Loki and Sylvie sit beside each other, bonding in preparation for their trek to Alioth, and the uncertainty of the aftermath. Loki assures Sylvie that he will not betray her, having moved beyond the narcissism behind his prior betrayals. As for the aftermath, Loki proposes they venture through it together. As they approach the storm, Sylvie hands Loki a TemPad to return to the TVA, but he insists on accompanying her. He passes the device to Mobius. Classic, Alligator, and Kid Loki decide to remain as well. Loki receives a blade from Kid Loki, and shares a heartfelt parting hug with Mobius as he passes through a Timedoor , pledging to destroy the TVA. Classic, Kid, and Alligator Loki begin to walk away.

Loki and Sylvie wait for a branching timeline to occur to distract Alioth, allowing Sylvie to enchant the storm. However, they soon adopt a new strategy: Loki runs sideways, attempting to make himself the distraction, ultimately proving futile when Alioth prepares to devour Sylvie. Sylvie is saved when Classic Loki returns, using his powers to generate a massive illusion of Asgard . Witnessing the potency of Classic Loki's magic, the duo discerns that they are stronger than they realize. Sure enough, Alioth attacks the false Asgard, giving Loki and Sylvie time to gain contact with the storm; Classic Loki is devoured in the process.

Journey Into Mystery 11

The storm, now neutralized, reveals a portal to the realm where the Citadel at the End of Time stands. Loki and Sylvie approach it together.

Synopsis for "The Vengeance of the Thunder God!"

Thor was in the middle of a fight with the Absorbing Man , Crusher Creel, when he was alerted by Balder the Brave of the danger to Jane Foster ; she had been kidnapped by Loki and brought back to Asgard . Meanwhile, the Absorbing Man had wandered off to cause trouble without the hindrance of Thor. The Thunder God immediately went to face his scheming half-brother, Loki . The two fought and exchanged insults, while Foster looked on in wonder and fear, not sure why she was the pawn in their fight.

Back on Midgard , reporter Harris Hobbs , helps the police in their search for Crusher Creel, the Absorbing Man , and explains to them what his powers are. Creel has in the meantime found a house in the suburbs, needing sleep and food, and walks in to take what he needs. Back in Asgard , Thor and Loki battle on, Loki tries to freeze the air around Thor, but he breaks out immediately, "The rage in my heart, the justice of my cause, the strength in my sinews, these are the spells which shall defeat the master of evil!!" At that moment, Odin causes an explosion of rock between them, and scolds them for engaging "in private conflict which hath not the approval of Odin". Loki then tries to blame the fight on Thor, claiming that he brought his mortal love, Jane Foster to Asgard to make her immortal as well, just as she faints, the strain of the ordeal too much. Odin is not sure who to believe, knowing that Loki is a trickster. He then calls for a "Trial of the Gods!" Thor then asks his father for 48 hours, to return Foster to her home and to defeat the Absorbing Man. After Foster is safely back in her home, Thor uses his powers to make her forget what she saw in Asgard.

Back on Earth, Creel is imposing his will on a couple in the Suburbs. They try to make him leave, but it is no use. Nearby, the police are closing in on him, while Thor arrives to help. The police find the house that Creel entered, while Thor tries to convince them not to try to take him down without his help. The reporter Hobbs then goes into the house and taunts him into smashing through the wall, and out of the house. Creel then finds himself surrounded by police, as Thor takes command of them and orders them not to fire. Thor then throws his hammer at him, causing him to absorb its strength and power. Thor realizes that he must not use his brute strength, but instead his power over the elements, and makes a trap of heat around him. Creel absorbs the heat, just as the police fire a grenade at him, which explodes and stuns Creel for a moment. Thor gives him one more chance to stop and give up, while Creel boasts that he is the strongest, and he is about to finish off the Thunder God by touching the ground and becoming a colossus made of multiple elements at once. Thor waits a moment for a reply, but when none is forth-coming, Thor whirls his hammer faster than a mortal eye can see, changing the air around Creel to Helium, causing him to absorb the properties of that element, and become a gas, and float into the atmosphere, and no longer a threat to humanity. The reporter, Hobbs, then tells Thor that he has realized that he is not the "conceited, costumed, show-off".

The Thunder God then takes off, having to take care of a few things before he is summoned back to Asgard for the Trial of the Gods. He flies back to take one last look at his beloved Jane Foster , for if he fails, it could be his last look at her. As he does so, Odin calls him back to Asgard , "whatever my fate, I shall face it, like a God!".

Synopsis for "Tales of Asgard - A Viper in Our Midst"

Thor was leading a band of Asgardian warriors, who were riding out to stop Ghan , "the most deadly of Storm Giants", on his way to attack Asgard. Loki was, of course, resentful of Thor, thinking that he should be leading the warriors. As the battle begins, Ghan hurls a boulder at Thor, who blocks it with his hammer, causing it to shatter. Loki does not enter the battle, claiming that "the cunning Loki is far too clever to take needless chances!" and stays back in safety to plot the defeat of Thor. He then uses his magic sword to weave a spell to give Ghan the final victory. Before the spell can work, Ghan is driven back by the Asgardian's arrows. As the Storm Giant is being driven further back, they let loose their catapult, using a missile containing sleep fumes, to incapacitate him. The Asgardian task force go to where the giant should be sleeping, but find nothing. The rest of the party leaves, but Loki remains behind, saying he wanted to search more. He then "makes a mystic gesture" causing an eagle soaring nearby to return to the its natural form of the giant Ghan, saving him from the wrath of Thor. The giant then pledges his debt to Loki, and in return the Trickster reminds him not to forget it, "the day will come when I order you to repay this debt!" This was the first of many alliances with the forces of evil for Loki, as he plans and schemes to overthrow Asgard and destroy Thor.
