The nostalgic execution of its themes, style, and action should remind everyone how Disney films once were before the likes of Pixar. The 4K image with HDR10 looks amazing and the Dolby Atmos track sounds fantastic. The hour's worth of bonus material is light-hearted and fun too . Highly Recommended!

Storyline: Our Reviewer's Take

It's no secret that Disney attractions and rides transfer to the big screen really well. Just take a look at the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise. Their next action-adventure blockbuster would be Jungle Cruise and when they added Dwayne The Rock Johnson and Emily Blunt to the mix, they knew they had a hit on their hands. Having a horror and Liam Neeson action filmmaker helm this family-friendly project was also the correct way to go, which brought those older and nostalgic elements from previous Disney live-action movies and used them in this new film that is fun for the entire family.

The amount of thrills, action and even romance just blossoms from its first frame till its last and is a remarkably good time. There's a lot of heart and soul in this Disney film, something that was frankly missing from every Pirates movie. Even the comedy and jokes in Jungle Cruise stand out and mix well with its scarier elements in a great way. Let's all hope Disney makes a sequel here.

Video Review

Jungle Cruise comes with a fantastic 2160p 4K UHD transfer with an aspect ratio of 2.39:1 that is an upgrade from its 1080p Blu-ray counterpart. This is a great-looking live-action Disney action-adventure film that covers the entire color spectrum.

The color palette boasts a ton of different greens in the trees along the river along with their brown branches and dirt banks that back up to the water. The sandy locales along with the forest-like landscapes look beautiful and are rich with natural earthy tones. The costumes, especially that of the villain pops right off-screen with more primary colors of red and purple. A lot of the wardrobe consists of whites and variations of brown, but Dwayne's red neck scarf always looks excellent in all different types of lighting. The blue skies above are amazing as well that coincide with the amber filters down below that give the film its unique rustic appeal. The black levels at night time and in dark tunnels look exquisite and inky and the skin tones are rather natural if not a tiny bit on the amber side.

HDR10 enhances those detailed colors in the darker sequences, revealing more greens, browns, and reds at all times. This 4K image is a bit darker than the Blu-ray version but also gives way to better natural-looking colors that don't shine brightly as they would in 1080p. This 4K presentation is definitely the better option for viewing. The detail is sharp and vivid as well, revealing closeups that show individual hairs and stubble on the actor's faces, makeup effects, wrinkles, facial pores, and more. The textures in the wardrobe have great stitching and material that can be seen easily and even wider shots of the boat and forest showcase their natural splinters and textures of nature. Even Dwayne's feline pet looks incredible in all modes of lighting with its CGI appearance, never looking soft. There were also no instances of banding, aliasing, or video noise on this 4K image.

Audio Review

This release delivers an astonishing Dolby Atmos track that sounds better than most previous Disney audio options on recent titles. Usually with Disney releases, one would have to adjust the volume up a few points for normal listening quality, but that's not the case here. Sound effects are robust and loud at all times and provide some excellent directionality. One of the first scenes inside a library of books and artifacts provides some wonderful noises that zip and zoom across the entire speaker system with ease. This transitions into a bigger sound palette of explosions, gunshots, and more that provide more than enough bass on the low end of things. There's a great rumble to these larger moments that is completely satisfying.

The underwater submersion sequence has all the necessary acoustics and sound effects that create total underwater immersion. The boat chases and big attacks on the village are ripe with sounds that come from everywhere that never have an overbearing sound to them. The height speakers deliver with rain, thunder, and other natural elements from above on a consistent basis. The dialogue is clean, clear, and easy to follow along with in addition to all the action. This is atop notch audio option here.

Special Features

There are about 66 minutes of bonus features included in this set, most of which is EPK fluff, but since it's Emily and Dwayne - it's a ton of fun to watch. There is also a cinematic mode where a text trivia track pops up and plays during the film.

  • Expedition Mode - Play the film with this mode selected and receive a pop-up trivia text track during the movie that reveals some of the details behind the production.
  • It's A Jungle Out There (HD, 13 Mins.) - An EPK of sorts that covers the Disney attraction ride, the characters, the plot, basic production, casting, and more.
  • Dwayne And Emily (HD, 5 Mins.) - A funny look at both actors and how much fun they had on set.
  • Creating The Amazon (HD, 15 Mins.) - Visual effects, set design, and more are covered here, which is pretty fascinating. Easily the best featurette.
  • Once A Skip, Always A Skip (HD, 14 Mins.) - The real-life Disney ride employees talk about their stories and experiences working on the ride and at Disney.
  • Deleted Scenes (HD, 16 Mins.) - A handful of short deleted scenes that were edited out for pacing and time. Nothing of note here.
  • Outtakes (HD, 3 Mins.) - The standard montage of missed cues, flubbed lines, laughter, and dancing on set.

Final Thoughts

Jungle Cruise is a ton of fun. Full Stop. This movie brings back that nostalgic adventure sense that older Disney movies once had and with The Rock no less. It's action, romance, and comedy are all what. makes Disney great and fun for the whole family. What a wonderful movie. This 4K image is stunning and the Dolby Atmos track is excellent. the extras are fun as well if they're mostly fluff pieces. Highly Recommended!

Cruise Control

For a time, Jungle Cruise draws on the classic cinema luxury of an African Queen – a boat, foreign waters at wartime, and two of Hollywood’s attractive leads on the run as they veer toward romance. Movies are glossier now though. Jungle isn’t jungle, or even a backlot. Everything is digital, even the fantasy.

Jungle Cruise requires the charisma of its leads to elevate the routine plotting, from which Disney is hoping for another Pirates of the Caribbean ; Jungle Cruise is not that. Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt have fun on this trip, running into cliches like waterfalls and (tasteful) natives. It’s naturally fun to see pompous rich people lose their comfort as they usually do in these stories. There’s also a villainous German worth hating, setting up a stock confrontation during the finale as both groups rush toward mythical treasure.

Little of Jungle Cruise will survive in memory when it’s over

Even as light escapist fantasy though, the stakes feel low, and the visuals artificially sterile. Johnson and Blunt stand around blank sets, surrounded by fake forests, occasionally fighting fake creatures or resurrected Conquistadors. The result is action that appears aimless the longer it goes. The few twists land with a thud because the drama never established itself. Jungle Cruise stays strictly playful in tone, even when stiffly spilling expository (and loosely historical) background context.

Not to say African Queen wasn’t produced with commercial aspirations, but the likes of Bogart command a specific presence that lends adventures a gravitas. Johnson’s playful banter, much as his impeccable muscular bulk screams, “movie star leading man,” doesn’t convey the same attitude. That gives Jungle Cruise limitless levity, and Blunt capably gives the personal barbs right back. Any energy stems from their bickering, and the standard trope of placing a cultured woman with a rugged man who lives on the sea.

Some credit goes to the screenwriters who do well in avoiding racist cliches form the 1930s and ‘40s. Undoubtedly, that’s a studio requirement, but given the setting and homages, it’s easy to slip up. They don’t, placing the outmoded jungle natives into the story via misdirection, then allowing the scope to open for a hearty finale. Little of Jungle Cruise will survive in memory when it’s over, yet the takeaway (hopefully) is killing the garbage racial symbology that persisted over decades.

jungle cruise 4k review

Rudimentary digital video benefits primarily from the source’s natural clarity. A spot of noise isn’t a bother. Sadly, that doesn’t amount to much. The constant CG drops Jungle Cruise down to 2K, and the upscale process isn’t outstanding in any particular way. Wide shots of jungle vistas appear muddy more than refined. Lagging resolution reduces fidelity in close too as facial definition softens. Jumping to 4K introduces little over HD, and if anything, likely makes the inherent faults more obvious.

Although lush on occasion (greens, notably), Jungle Cruise chooses a vintage sepia tone suited to the early 1900s aesthetic. The warmth swells, if oddly keeping flesh tones somewhat leveled when compared to the rest. Primaries sag toward yellow-ish hues otherwise.

If there’s a save, that’s the HDR. Sunlight across the skyline shimmers aggressively. Jungle Cruise glows in the best way; fearful of brightness this disc is not. Black levels hit a consistent, stable depth too, capturing impressive density. The temptation to fade shadows to suggest aged visuals is avoided, choosing the glossier route from most modern blockbusters.

Disney mixes Jungle Cruise on the lower side, requiring a volume bump more akin to their earlier 4K output. Thankfully, the range isn’t pinched after the adjustment, producing tight bass as required. Action scenes find use for the subwoofer frequently, elevating punches and Dwayne Johnson’s muscled pro wrestling moves. Boat engines rumble, and so do river rapids. It’s satisfying, then more so when gunfire starts factoring in.

Given the setting, Atmos effects run rampant as animals fly overhead. Ambiance remains high in crowds, keeping the soundstage consistently filled. Imaging maintains precise motion and flow, following the visuals accurately. Channel transitions are smooth and organic, hitting all the right points.

A generic making of begins the Blu-ray’s bonuses (only on the Blu-ray) and runs 12-minutes. Johnson and Blunt take over the next short featurette as they discuss their characters. A look at the sets and effects reaches 15-minutes. The ride itself comes into focus over 14-minutes in a fun piece that’s mostly marketing, if enjoyable. The disc closes shop over deleted scenes and outtakes.

Jungle Cruise

Passably old fashioned while drenched in modern visual effects, Jungle Cruise is little more than acceptable, one-off escapism trying to recapture Disney’s Pirates gold.

Jungle Cruise - 4K UHD Blu-ray Review

Jungle Cruise

Not much has changed since 1955 when the Jungle River Cruise ride was introduced.

The romance of the swashbuckling adventure yarn returns courtesy of the chemistry between Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt in Jungle Cruise .  Is it perfect?  Nope.  But watching them come together in this tall tale is pretty fun and really, in a fairly lackluster summer of releases, that’s probably all we can expect from the Walt Disney Company who, bucking trends, manages to make another successful movie based on a theme park ride.

Jungle Cruise is a fun throwback to the yesteryear of action flicks as we get one rousing set piece after another on our way to a mystical denouement that is both unexpected and not fully embraced for its sheer ridiculousness.  The film starts out in epic fashion, but runs out of steam as the effects take over and a bit of the magic is lost.  Is this adventure Pirates Of the Caribbean quality?  Not quite, BUT Jungle Cruise does seem to use The Curse of the Black Pearl as its framework as we travel through the rivers of South America by steamboat and watch a very dangerous jungle pass by on our way to an expected sequel.

Jungle Cruise , directed by House of Wax ’s Jaume Collet-Serra , is all about the ghost of Johnny Depp ’s Jack Sparrow as his spirit is poking around in almost every frame of this freewheeling, logic-bending, and wisecracking tale of cursed Spanish conquistadors in South America who fall victim to the legend of a mythical tree whose pink petals can cure any illness.  It’s 1916 and we are thick in a Brazilian rain forest with a very punny Dwayne Johnson as our guide.  He’s a lot like a normal version of Jack Sparrow . . . except with a whole lot of muscles and a different style of captain’s hat.

Jungle Cruise , when it comes down to performances, is probably Johnson ’s best movie.  His performance is everything it needs to be.  And, honestly, that’s probably why it works more often than it doesn’t.  We have a swashbuckling hero in Frank Wolff ( Johnson ) who is both mysterious and charming.  He doesn’t take life too seriously.  He’s also not afraid of anything and that has little to do with his massive size.

Jungle Cruise

We also have a damsel in not-so distress thanks to Blunt ’s portrayal of Dr. Lily Houghton, a Botany graduate who is in possession of an ancient arrowhead which may lead to the mythical tree and confirm her theories on The Tears of the Moon myth.  Lily calls Frank “Skippy” and he refers to her as “Pants” due to her avoidance of dresses.  That’s right.  She sticks out like a ore thumb in this time period.  She (a) wears pants and (b) only needs saving from herself thanks to her willingness to explore even at her and her brother, MacGregor Houghton’s ( Jack Whitehall ) peril.

And, much like The Curse of the Black Pearl , we also have supernatural bad guys in the form of quasi-possessed conquistadors and a German aristocrat who takes his submarine down the river after the good guys.  Yes, he wants the Tears of the Moon, too.  What follows is a game of cat-and-mouse through the jungle, the river, and a bunch of fake cannibals who are led by a woman named Trader Sam ( Veronica Falcón ), who winds up unexpectedly helping them escape some crazy attacks from these cursed conquistadors.

Co-starring Édgar Ramírez, Dani Rovira, Quim Gutiérrez, Andy Nyman , and a sorely underused Paul Giamatti, Jungle Cruise will annoy some viewers with its groan-inducing jokes and its maddening middle (after the epic feel of the rousing opening fades away) and will please others with its Indiana Jones -like swagger, its nods to the original Disneyland ride, and its use of Metallica ’s “Nothing Else Matters” .

Jungle Cruise might lose some steam along its route in this cinematic take on Adventureland, but, much like the ride it is based on, it remains FUN .  Jungle Cruise is now playing in theaters and available on Disney+ .

Color. There's a lot of it in Jungle Cruise and it is absolutely gorgeous in 4K with this beautifully rendered 2160p 2.40:1 HDR10 transfer. In addition to brightly colored scenes, lush green foliage, and the deepest blue skies you've ever seen, there's a lot of darkness. And the details in the blacks of the night scenes and dimly lit caves hold up wonderfully with no crush while also maintaining intricate details perfectly.

This is a release that any 4K UHD fan would be proud to add to their collection. It also helps that its a pretty good movie as well.

Dialogue is always robust and clearly audible, while numerous sound effects and directional noises work across and around the room. Your system will stay busy throughout, with the sub rarely ever taking a rest. Of particular note are the heights that come to life thanks to the Atmos track. Pay particularly close attention during the storms as rain, thunder and lightning provide a lifelike representation of being in a real storm.

Jungle Cruise (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

jungle cruise 4k review

Seeking an ancient tree with healing abilities, Dr. Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt) and wisecracking skipper Frank Wolff (Dwayne Johnson) team up for the adventure of a lifetime on Disney’s Jungle Cruise, a rollicking ride down the Amazon. Amidst danger and supernatural forces lurking in the jungle, secrets of the lost tree unfold as their fate – and mankind’s – hangs in the balance.

Jungle Cruise seeks adventure in the vein of films like 1999’s The Mummy and another Disney ride to turned movie Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl . It has that lighthearted, throwback style of the adventure films of the 1930s and 1940s. Characters are done with that type in mind and a modern spin added to them for a fun take. While like the two films I mentioned, Jungle Cruise oddly borrows some story cues from that series in parts and feels at times like a jigsaw puzzle of other films instead of charting its own course.

Buffing up the film is the absolutely knock out star power of the two leads. Emily Blunt is one of the finest leading actors in the business and its nice to see her finally headlining successful blockbusters or ones with big aspirations like this, A Quiet Place and Mary Poppins Returns after years of films that weren’t quite getting there. She’s dynamite again here and plays wonderfully off her co-starts. Dwayne Johnson of course gives you what you ask of him and its certainly adds an angle to the film. I personally enjoyed that they keep with the spirit of the ride and have him deliver nonstop “dad jokes” throughout the movie. As an appreciator of the fine arts of puns, especially the eye rolling ones, it kept me entertained.

Somewhere along the line in the plotting, Jungle Cruise hits a fast start and then slogs its way through to its third act. There’s a lot of stop offs and mythology that bog down the film. Much of it we are told is important but never feels that way. Edgar Ramirez has a part in the movie that you’d think would be much more because he’s cast, but unfortunately it comes off as only some fancy decoration for the supernatural side of villainy. The human side of the coin has Jesse Plemmons hamming it up, which is fine. But it almost feels like there is too much going on in this adventure in terms of adversity for our heroes that keeps this from being more fun and swift. Perhaps there is too much, perhaps its how they juggle it. But from just the sheer challenges of rickety boat and the jungle, Paul Giamatti’s gangster, the Germans, the tree people, indigenous tribes…and probably more I’m forgetting…its a lot for one little blockbuster to handle.

There’s surely a lot of family fun to be had in Jungle Cruise , one just wishes it was a little neater and tighter. There’s some bloat in the boat that does threaten to sink it. Its luckily balanced out by the charm of its stars as well as some rather fun swashbuckling action sequence. I did forget to mention there is a weird (obviously) CGI tiger in here, too.  At the end of the day, the film proves fun enough for one time time getaway on the trip, but doesn’t quite hit the heights to be a modern adventure classic like many probably hoped going in.

Disclaimer: Screen captures used in the review are taken from the standard Blu-ray disc, not the 4K UHD Blu-ray disc.

Encoding : HEVC / H.265

Resolution : 4K (2160p)

Aspect Ratio : 2.39:1

Layers:  BD-66

Clarity/Detail : Jungle Cruise arrives on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray as a natural 4K title from what I am able to gather from technical materials available. As expected, its a nice, crisp and sharp picture rife with detail and texture. It moves very wonderfully with plenty of depth. The standard Blu-ray proves pretty impressive, but this is able to cosmetically improve it to a good enough degree, though some may find it negligible.

Depth:  The film’s scale shows of quite well in this 4K image. The camera movements come across confident in the transfer and allows the viewer to see the spacing and pushback on display. Movements are smooth and natural with no motion distortions.

Black Levels : Blacks are deep and natural able to see an increase over the standard blu-ray with much more saturation and nuance. Information is fine even in the darkest corners of the frame. No crushing witnessed.

Color Reproduction : Color is pretty vivid here with a lot of pop. The skies in this movie are beautiful and the film’s climactic action sequence really bursts with a nice HDR glow on it. Many of the clothing outfits and such feature good strong color and the rustic colors like browns and grays even have some nice dimension and strength to them.

Flesh Tones : Skin tones are natural and consistent from start to finish of the film. Facial features and textures are pretty radiant and you get clean, sharp detail in any given frame.

Noise/Artifacts:  Clean.

Audio Format(s) : English Dolby Atmos, English 2.0 Descriptive Audio, French 5.1 Dolby Digital, Spanish 7.1 Dolby Digital Plus, Japanese 7.1 Dolby Digital Plus

Subtitles : English SDH, French, Spanish, Japanese

Dynamics : Jungle Cruise arrives on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray with Disney’s rather standard approach to Dolby Atmos. While this isn’t terrible, there’s always the quiet nature with which these are mixed holding it back. There is good variation and balance, but some of the action and effects you’ll want to hit better. So as per usually, roll up your volume a little higher, see if you can’t increase your subs intensity and then sit back and enjoy Jungle Cruise.

Height:  There’s a lot that happens in this movie that comes from above and the speakers do a great job of translating that action and traveling it around or dropping it down.

Low Frequency Extension : There could be a bit more boom, but the subwoofer does do an adequate job with rumbling engines, bursts of magic, punches, gunfire, roaring waters, splashes, explosions and more.

Surround Sound Presentation : Sounds are well thought out and full around the room. Many of the big sequences see all channels coming together in concert to toss around the room and play with your senses here and there.

Dialogue Reproduction : Vocals are clear and crisp.

Jungle Cruise has all the ingredients for a new adventure classic but sorta falls just shy. Disney’s 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray release for the film features a pretty solid presentation that could be nit picked at, but its rather fine. The extras here a bit fluffy and by the numbers but manage to inform and entertain. If you’re looking for the best edition to own of the film, than this disc is easily the answer.

4K Blu-Ray Review: Disney’s “Jungle Cruise” Features Hours of Bonus Features

One of the top 10 highest grossing films at the box office in 2021, Jungle Cruise  stands out as the family-freindly summer blockbuster of 2021. Audiences embraced the Dwayne Johnson/Emily Blunt romantic comedy adventure on both the big and small screen (via Disney+  Premier Access) and while the film is now streaming for all Disney+ subscribers, those that want to own the film forever can now do so with the 4K, Blu-Ray, DVD  and Digital release of the film.

(Disney)

A down-on-his-luck wisecracking skipper (Dwayne Johnson) is hired to take Dr. Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt) and her brother (Jack Whitehall) down the rivers of the amazon. They’re in search of a legendary healing tree at the center of a legendary curse and skipper Frank Wolff is the only one daring enough to accept the assignment. The journey will be full of perils, from piranhas and wild cats to restless natives who may or may not be cannibals. What could go wrong?

Inspired by the classic Disneyland  attraction of the same name, Jungle Cruise  captures the spirit of the ride while creating something new around it. While leaning too heavily into formulas established by the Pirates of the Caribbean  franchise, the plot is a bit predictable and pacing is erratic, but nonetheless fun. With a sequel already on the way, fans will certainly want to revisit it again before the next voyage around the rivers of the world.

With hours of bonus features, the home video release of Jungle Cruise  gives fans a nice look at the making of both the film and the classic Disneyland attraction. The 4K UHD release offers superior video quality over streaming capabilities, while any of the disc options provide consistent video quality in their respective formats for movie buffs with inconsistent internet speeds.

Bonus Features:

  • Expedition Mode (2:07:16) – Watch the film with pop-up trivia about the attraction and filming locations, historical context about the scenes, and jokes in the style of the classic ride.
  • It’s a Jungle Out There: Making Jungle Cruise (12:58) – Director Jaume Collet-Serra and stars Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Jack Whitehall and more discuss adapting a classic theme park attraction into a comedy summer blockbuster.
  • Dwayne and Emily: Undoubtedly Funny (5:10) – Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt discuss working with each other and why they get along so well.
  • Creating the Amazon (15:14) – From location shoots to elaborate sets and digital characters, the world of Jungle Cruise  required a lot of talented artists to bring it to life.
  • Once a Skip, Always a Skip (14:00) – Four Cast Members who have been skippers at the original attraction in Disneyland share their experience going around (and around) the rivers of the world.
  • Outtakes (2:25) – The cast goof off and make mistakes in this short blooper reel.
  • MacGregor Drives the Boat
  • MacGregor Water Skis
  • Joachim and Nilo on the Dock
  • Frank Talks to Proxima & Lily’s Nightmares
  • Sub Gets Stuck
  • Proxima Surprises MacGregor
  • Frank Gets the Cold Shoulder
  • Trader Sam and Lily Walk in the Jungle
  • MacGregor and Trader Sam Say Goodbye
  • Frank Makes Tea for Lily
  • The Backside of Water

Final Thoughts:

Disney’s Jungle Book  is an exciting fantasy adventure film starring two of the biggest names in film and based on a beloved attraction that’s “World famous.” With heart and humor, the film is on-brand for Disney and the home video release offers a more robust assortment of bonus features than most modern films receive.

Bonus Features: ‘Jungle Cruise’ sails home on 4K and Blu-ray

jungle cruise 4k review

When the box office needs a jumpstart, give it a little Dwayne Johnson. The Rock is always able to work some magic – even in a pandemic – and “Jungle Cruise” was no exception.

The summer blockbuster co-starring Emily Blunt brought the classic Disneyland ride to life in a swashbuckling, action-packed treasure hunt. Following in the footsteps of its fellow ride-to-screen film, “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Jungle Cruise” channels the same playful and thrilling quest for adventure that made “Pirates” such a hit.

Now, “Jungle Cruise” is sailing home on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital, after already making its way to Disney Plus on Disney+ Day .

Review: ‘Jungle Cruise’ adaptation is a welcome change of pace for the modern blockbuster

Review: ‘Jungle Cruise’ adaptation is a welcome change of pace for the modern blockbuster

“Jungle Cruise” finds Dr. Lily Houghton (Blunt) and wisecracking skipper Frank Wolff (Johnson) teaming up for the adventure of a lifetime as they search through the Amazon for an ancient tree with healing abilities. Amidst danger and supernatural forces lurking in the jungle, secrets of the lost tree unfold as their fate – and mankind’s – hangs in the balance.

The home release comes loaded with bonus features, including a whopping 11 deleted scenes. Rather than a traditional director’s commentary track, the Blu-ray offers “Jungle Cruise Expedition Mode,” which will be a hit with Disney-lovers as it points out Easter Eggs and trivia nods to the original ride, as well as other fun facts throughout the film.

Let’s take a look at everything this home release has to offer!

Special Features on Blu-ray and Digital

  • Jungle Cruise Expedition Mode  – Climb aboard a ramshackle tramp steamer (or your own couch) to learn fun facts, discover Easter eggs and catch some pop-up trivia throughout the movie.
  • It’s A Jungle Out There: Making Jungle Cruise  – Director Jaume Collet-Serra, the cast and crew discuss the importance of the film’s elements, from casting to makeup to the use of an ancient indigenous language, in creating the world that honors one of Disneyland’s most beloved rides.
  • Dwayne And Emily: Undoubtedly Funny  – Go on-set with the two stars, whose newfound friendship helped them project a natural onscreen chemistry. Although their characters challenge each other throughout the film, the actors make each other laugh. A lot!
  • Creating The Amazon  – Explore the cinematic artistry involved in creating the world of “Jungle Cruise,” including how Frank’s boat coursed “dangerous” water in a tank in Atlanta, how a town was built in Kauai, and how a ferocious jaguar came to life, among other amazing effects.
  • Once A Skip, Always A Skip  – Join a panel of “Skippers” at the Disneyland Resort as they reminisce about the rewards, challenges and surprises they’ve experienced while helming the world-famous “Jungle Cruise” attraction, and hear their advice to aspiring skippers everywhere!
  • Outtakes  – Step behind the scenes of the production to catch the cast in a series of flubs, falls, foibles – and a whole lot of laughter.
  • MacGregor Drives The Boat
  • MacGregor Water Skis
  • Joachim And Nilo On The Dock

jungle cruise 4k review

Now streaming on:

In the pantheon of Disney movies based on Disney theme park rides, "Jungle Cruise" is pretty good—leagues better than dreck like "Haunted Mansion," though not quite as satisfying as the original "Pirates of the Caribbean."

The most pleasant surprise is that director Jaume Collet-Serra (" The Shallows ") and a credited team of five, count 'em, writers have largely jettisoned the ride's mid-century American colonial snarkiness and casual racism (a tradition  only recently eliminated ). Setting the revamp squarely in the wheelhouse of blockbuster franchise-starters like " Raiders of the Lost Ark ," " Romancing the Stone " and "The Mummy," and pushing the fantastical elements to the point where the story barely seems to be taking place in our universe, it's a knowingly goofy romp, anchored to the banter between its leads, an English feminist and adventurer played by Emily Blunt and a riverboat captain/adventurer played by  Dwayne Johnson .

Notably, however, even though the stars' costumes (and a waterfall sequence) evoke the classic "The African Queen"—John Huston's comic romance/action film starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn ; worth looking up if you've never watched it—the sexual chemistry between the two is nonexistent, save for a few fleeting moments, like when Frank picks up the heroine‘s hand-cranked silent film camera and captures affectionate images of her. At times the leads seem more like a brother and sister needling each other than a will they/won’t they bantering couple. Lack of sexual heat is often (strangely) a bug, or perhaps a feature, in films starring Johnson, the four-quadrant blockbuster king (though not on Johnson’s HBO drama "Ballers"). Blunt keeps putting out more than enough flinty looks of interest to sell a romance, but her leading man rarely reflects it back at her. Fortunately, the film's tight construction and prolific action scenes carry it, and Blunt and Johnson do the irresistible force/immovable object dynamic well enough, swapping energies as the story demands.

Blunt's character, Lily Houghton, is a well-pedigreed adventurer who gathers up maps belonging to her legendary father and travels to the Amazon circa 1916 to find the Tears of the Moon, petals from a "Tree of Life"-type of fauna that can heal all infirmities. She and her snooty, pampered brother MacGregor (Jack Whitehall) hire Frank "Skipper" Wolff (Johnson) to bring them to their destination. The only notable concession to the original theme park ride comes here: Wolff's day job is taking tourists upriver and making cheesy jokes in the spirit of "hosts" on Disney Jungle Cruise rides of yore. On the mission, Johnson immediately settles into a cranky but funny old sourpuss vibe, a la John Wayne or Harrison Ford , and inhabits it amiably enough, even though buoyant, almost childlike optimism comes more naturally to him than world-weary gruffness.

The supporting cast is stacked with overqualified character players. Paul Giamatti plays a gold-toothed, sunburned, cartoonishly “Italian” harbor master who delights at keeping Frank in debt. Edgar Ramirez is creepy and scary as a conquistador whose curse from centuries ago has trapped him in the jungle.  Jesse Plemons plays the main baddie, Prince Joachim, who wants to filch the power of the petals for the Kaiser back in Germany (he's Belloq to the stars' Indy and Marion, trying to swipe the Ark). Unsurprisingly, given his track record, Plemons steals the film right out from under its leads.

Collet-Serra keeps the action moving along, pursuing a more classical style than is commonplace in recent live-action Disney product (by which I mean, the blocking and editing have a bit of elegance, and you always know where characters are in relation to each other). The editing errs on the side of briskness to such an extent that affecting, beautiful, or spectacular images never get to linger long enough to become iconic. The CGI is dicey, particularly on the larger jungle animals—was the production rushed, or were the artists just overworked?—and there are moments when everything seems so rubbery/plasticky that you seem to be watching the first film that was actually shot on location at Disney World.

But the staging and execution of the chases and fights compensates. Derivative of films that were themselves highly derivative, "Jungle Cruise" has the look and feel of a paycheck gig for all involved, but everyone seems to be having a great time, including the filmmakers.

In theaters and on Disney+ for a premium charge starting Friday, July 30th.

COMMENTS

  1. Jungle Cruise (4K UHD Review)

Jungle Cruise is Disney's latest attempt at adapting one of their world-famous theme park attractions into a motion picture. Much success was previously had with the Pirates and the Caribbean series, and bringing on a director like Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan, The Shallows) with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in the lead, it seems like a nice recipe for something enjoyable. Unfortunately ...

  2. Jungle Cruise (Disney+) Movie Review

Despite its bells and whistles, Jungle Cruise is likely to struggle in keeping the attention even of its target market. The experience is not dissimilar to having to sit through a sales pitch for a product you immediately decided you probably didn't want. It feels rehearsed, rehashed, forced and insincere.

  3. Jungle Cruise
