Jurassic World Live Tour adding two elements to canon, including a new dinosaur

Jurassic World Live Tour

Before Colin Trevorrow ’s third Jurassic World movie stomps into theaters in the summer of 2021, Feld Entertainment and NBCUniversal (owner of SYFY Wire) are taking the franchise on the road in a revolutionary live show that blends real actors with state-of-the-art animatronics .

While the production brings back all the fan favorites, like the T. rex, velociraptors, and Indominus rex, there are also a number of surprises that longtime fans of the franchise may not be expecting.

Today, SYFY WIRE attended a behind-the-scenes demonstration for  Jurassic World Live Tour  and learned more about the plot and its central dinosaur hero, a Troodon named Jeanie. This particular specie of dinosaur, which lived during the Cretaceous period and is considered to be the smartest that ever lived, is a brand-new addition to the  Jurassic Park canon.

"She’s slightly smaller in size than, say, a raptor, but she can still go toe to toe with a raptor. Very intelligent, she conveys a lot of emotion and inquisitiveness," said project manager Corey McCourt at the event.

"They’re that far advanced, and it’s believed that if the dinosaurs didn’t go extinct, that [they] would have actually evolved and still be around today," added Associate Producer Chris Nobles.

Jeanie actually showed up in the scaly flesh to interact with the gathered members of the press.

"This is a new bit of technology that translates dinosaur thoughts and emotions into human language, so we can determine whether a dinosaur feels happy or sad or angry or scared," said Ross Nicholson, one of the production's co-directors.

While fans may be curious why we haven't seen Jeanie or Kate in the franchise before, Nobles said that they've always been there in the background, just not essential to the story of Owen Grady (Chris Pratt), Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard), and the rest of the characters we already know.

"[Kate] has her own lab just like Owen has his lab. It’s just that camera shift of ‘What’s going on over here?’ And she’s working with the Troodons, just to work on their brain activity and to see what’s going on in their heads."

Of course, no Jurassic World event would be complete without a guest appearance from Blue herself, the raptor trained by Owen. Just like Jeanie, she also showed up to take selfies, snarl a bit, and look generally menacing.

To perfectly capture the look and feel of the live-action movies, the production got plenty of consultation from Steven Spielberg , Colin Trevorrow, and Frank Marshall .

"The thing that Steven Spielberg said to us [is that] he wanted us to really make sure that we had that humor in our show," Nicholson said. "So, we’ve been really careful in our script to make sure that we really bring that out. All the key hallmarks of the franchise [are on display]: the awe and wonder, the action-adventure, the thrills, and above everything else, the humor."

Nicholson's co-director, Dan Shipton, added:

“Steven was also telling us about when he was making Jurassic Park , that his dream was make a full-sized T. rex, but he never got around to it. He obviously did what he did, and it made an incredible film. So, when he went back to it and CGI had moved on, they just jumped the animatronic part and made the T. rex with CGI. He’s so excited that we’re getting a real, full animatronic T. rex on the stage, and that’s something that he had dreamed of and was excited that we’re actually making that dream come true for him.”

An insider's view of the Jurassic World Live Tour

Carlos Caraballo, a performer for the Jurassic World Live Tour, said the cast members have multiple roles throughout the show. They sub in and out for each other.

Caraballo’s primary role is “dinoteer.” He's one of the performers inside the 100-plus-pound Jeanie, a Troodon dino who is one of the main characters.

He said people who attend the show can look forward to a new angle on the Jurassic World universe, and compared it to a movie from beginning to end but without the screen.

Caraballo, an Arizona native from Chandler, is excited to perform in his home state.

“I get to come back to actually do a show in downtown,” Caraballo said. “Plus, I am born and raised in Arizona, so Phoenix Suns have been my favorite team since I was a kid and getting the chance to go really to the arena they play in and then I get to perform is something pretty special.”

It was hard for him to choose his favorite part of performing. He said if he had to narrow it down, he'd say it’s the live show experience.

“There's something really special about doing something live and hearing the reactions of the crowd immediately,” Caraballo said.

‘it was nuts:’ ‘jurassic world live tour’ actors speak about new show making grand entrance in orlando, show runs till jan. 20 at amway center.

Landon McReynolds , Producer

ORLANDO, Fla – If you’re familiar with “Jurassic Park” and “Jurassic World,” get ready for a whole new adventure.

The new show, "Jurassic World Live,” is set to transport audiences to the pre-historic island Isla Nublar from the popular dinosaur franchise.

The show wowed hundreds of people Friday night at the Amway Center.

'Jurassic World Live Tour' performs at Amway Center Friday night

“Whats really exciting is it’s very authentic to the franchise. Our story is a brand new story that falls in between ‘Jurassic World’ and ‘Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom.' There are references, Easter eggs, prop details all throughout the show,” said Madison Embrey, who plays Dr. Kate Walker in the show.

The producers said the show features a backdrop of captivating scenery and 24 life-sized dinosaurs, including the fan-favorite velociraptor, Blue, and the monstrous 40-foot long Tyrannosaurus Rex.

“It was nuts. She (Tyrannosaurus Rex) made her grand entrance and it was spectacular. I remember I was facing the front of the stage, and wasn’t focusing on what was happening behind me, and someone had gotten her close and I turned around, and I screamed because of how terrified I was of her,” Embrey said.

Along with the dinosaurs, fans will see the moment real gyrospheres roll through dense jungle valleys as scientists work to unravel a corrupt plan and save an all-new dinosaur, a Troodon named Jeanie, from a terrible fate.

With scale, speed and ferocity, the animatronic and performer-operated dinosaurs deliver colossal, edge-of-your-seat, live entertainment unlike any other dinosaur experience, tour leaders said.

“Prior to this, I actually worked at Universal as ‘Blue’ the velociraptor,” said Austin Paz, a “dinoteer” for the show.

During Wednesday’s media preview, Paz said “as a 'dinoteer,’ we basically bring the puppets to life, that help bring the show to life."

Paz, who is one of four actors in the show from Central Florida, said the entire team goes through endless hours of leg, core and strength training to make sure their performances are given 150%.

“We practice walking, and doing a lot of strengthening. We have our weighted vests that we put on. They only weigh 60 pounds. Most of our dinosaurs weigh between 120 and 140 pounds. We’re literally running around with that on stage,” Paz said.

Both actors said audiences are surprised by the technology of the show and appear to be in awe while watching it.

“If you’re a fan of ‘Jurassic Park’ and “'Jurassic World,’ you’re going to be very, very happy," Embrey said.

10 invincible voice actors that could play their characters in live-action too.

Invincible has a variety of fantastic voice actors who would be the perfect candidates to reprise their roles in the live-action adaptation.

  • Lauren Cohan could expertly bring War Woman to life in the live-action Invincible movie despite her busy schedule.
  • Seth Rogen's brand of humor has made Allen the Alien a fan favorite, making him a fitting choice for the live-action project.
  • Sterling K. Brown's ability to portray both soft and aggressive elements makes him the perfect candidate to play Angstrom Levy in the movie.

Invincible 's stacked voice acting cast has led to the animated show becoming one of Amazon's biggest hits, but there are plenty of actors who could reprise their roles for the live-action project. While details have been limited, a live-action Invincible movie is supposedly in the works and will likely cash in on the success of the animated series. The popularity of the show means Invincible 's live-action movie will face some challenges , but there is still a lot of potential for the film to succeed and allowing some voice actors to reprise their roles in the project could be beneficial.

Despite how natural many of Invincible 's cast are at voicing their characters, they also have plenty of live-action experience as well. There are some huge names attached to Amazon's superhero show, many of who Kirkman has worked with on The Walking Dead , proving their live-action capability. Unfortunately, Steven Yeun is unlikely to play Mark in the Invincible movie , given the substantial age gap. Most of the teenage characters suffer this same issue as they are played by older actors, but there are a number of names who could seamlessly transition their role from animation into live-action without any issues.

10 Lauren Cohan as War Woman

Lauren cohan would expertly bring the guardian of the globe member to life.

War Woman may have a relatively short role in Invincible , but Lauren Cohan could comfortably portray this superhero in a live-action format. Although Cohan is busy with her Walking Dead spinoff, War Woman's shorter role is something she could likely fit into her schedule and make work. War Woman is one of the original Guardians of the Globe members in Invincible but is killed off at the hands of Omni-Man. Cohan already has the voice cues down to a tee, but she has also shown her ability to play a strong and brave character in live-action through The Walking Dead .

Her role as Maggie sets her up perfectly to play War Woman, and while being an actual superhero would be new to her, Cohan is more than capable of pulling it off. The actress has proven she can get aggressive while maintaining heroic characteristics, which will be perfect for War Woman's big fight against Omni-Man. Given Cohan has worked with Robert Kirkman both in live-action and in the animation scene, there is no reason not to let her reprise her Invincible role.

9 Seth Rogen as Allen the Alien

Allen the alien has become synonymous with seth rogen's brand of humor.

Given how pivotal Seth Rogen has been to Invincible 's animated series, it is only fitting that he would bring Allen the Alien into live-action. Rogen has an impressive film resume, both in acting and producing, meaning he would be no stranger to the big screen. His role as an executive producer on Invincible suggests he will likely be a part of the live-action project in some capacity, and reprising his role as Allen the Alien seems like a no-brainer. Rogen's brand of humor has made Allen a fan favorite, which he can confidently bring to the film.

While he may not be the perfect physical match to play Allen, there will likely be some use of CGI or props to make the character resemble both his comic and animated counterparts. Rogen's humor may be great, but the actor can also get serious, which is crucial since Allen the Alien is one of Invincible 's strongest characters. Outside of providing comedy, Allen is pivotal to the overall story, and with Rogen already balancing humor and drama in the show, his movie experience suggests he can replicate this in live-action as well.

Live-Action Invincible Movie: Confirmation & Everything We Know

8 sterling k. brown as angstrom levy, sterling k. brown can nail angstrom levy's soft & aggressive elements.

Sterling K. Brown plays one of Invincible season 2's main antagonists, and he could continue this role in the live-action project. Angstrom Levy was a key part of Invincible season 2's finale and was crucial in transforming Mark Grayson's character. Levy's death weighs heavily on the protagonist's mind and Brown would be fantastic at portraying the villain once again. Angstrom Levy has both a soft, good-hearted nature to him as well as a completely twisted side, and Brown did a great job of capturing both in the animated show.

Brown has enough similarities to convincingly pull off Levy's more pacific elements in a live-action format, and with the use of make-up and prosthetics, he could bring his eviler nature to life. Levy was terrifying in the finale thanks to Brown's impressive range, and there is no reason he couldn't repeat this in the movie. The actor's flexibility means he is the ideal choice to show both sides of Levy's character in Invincible , regardless of the format, and should be allowed to play this part in the live-action outing.

7 Clancy Brown as Damien Darkblood

Invincible needs clancy brown's curious performance as damien darkblood.

Although there is no guarantee Damien Darkblood will be part of the Invincible movie, if he is included, Clancy Brown has to play him once again. Brown is an extremely underrated actor and plays both Damien Darkblood and General Kregg in the Amazon show, proving he is a prominent cast member. His powerful and intimidating voice works well for Kregg, but mixing this with a more curious side is what makes Damien such a fascinating character despite his limited screen time.

Brown has even rocked a somewhat similar aesthetic to Damien in live-action through his performance as Burg in The Mandalorian . Burg has red skin with horns, showing that Brown is open to portraying these outlandish characters in a live-action setting. The actor's openness to these sorts of roles, alongside his previous experience playing Damien, confirms he would be the ideal candidate to play the character in Invincible 's live-action film.

6 Mahershala Ali as Titan

Mahershala ali has proven he can play complicated villains in the past.

Mahershala Ali is an Oscar-winning actor, making him a necessity to have in a live-action Invincible project. His role as Titan provides the show with one of its most interesting villains and while he only has one appearance, "That Actually Hurt" is among Invincible 's best episodes. Ali makes the most of his screen time and ensures Titan is a character worth investing in since it's hard to truly know what his intentions are. Although Titan is much stockier than Ali, the actor is in good shape and would still be convincing in this role.

Ali's performance as Uncle Aaron in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse gives an idea of what kind of villain Titan may become, and while that was an animated project as well, Ali's live-action accomplishments speak for themselves. He has been part of both the drama and superhero genres in live-action projects before, emphasizing he knows exactly how to make a character like Titan work in such an environment. As long as Ali can find a way to be as physically imposing as Titan in the live-action movie, he has to be the number one choice to play him.

5 Khary Payton as Black Samson

Khary payton is comfortable playing motivational heroes.

Black Samson continues The Walking Dead and Invincible crossover as the character is voiced by Khary Payton, who plays Ezekiel on Kirkman's zombie show. His charisma and distinctive voice are great at capturing audiences' attention and would arguably work even better in live-action, proving he would be a great fit for the film. His Invincible character, Black Samson, is one of the leaders of the new Guardians of the Globe, often acting as the voice of reason and attempting to dissolve his teammates' conflicts.

The hero's ability to motivate and inspire those around him mimics his Walking Dead role in a lot of ways, which is likely why Kirkman cast him in the first place. This makes it clear that he can put in this kind of performance regardless of whether the project is animated or live-action, indicating he would have no problems bringing Black Samson to the big screen. Payton is an incredibly likable actor and his acting experience would help improve the Invincible movie, which suggests he should be given the opportunity to reprise his role.

4 Mark Hamill as Art

Art needs mark hamill's decades worth of acting experience in the invincible movie.

The legendary Mark Hamill is both an icon in the world of animation and live-action, proving he can once again play Art Rosenbaum in Invincible 's movie. Hamill has become synonymous with roles like the Joker and Fire Lord Azai in the animated world, while his performance as Luke Skywalker remains relevant nearly 50 years after he first appeared in Star Wars. While Luke Skywalker has proven that Hamill can be a cinematic icon, the role of Art requires him to offer more of a supporting role.

Hamill has had no issues doing this smaller role in Invincible and could easily pull this off again in its movie form. He works well as the wise, experienced costume-maker and would be a great mentor figure for whatever young actor plays the role of Mark Grayson. Hamill's legacy is already cemented, but putting his decades' worth of skills into a live-action version of Art would raise the quality of Invincible 's movie that little bit more, and Kirkman should work hard to keep him involved with the franchise.

3 Ross Marquand as The Immortal

Ross marquand is one of the most versatile actors around & is perfect as the immortal.

Invincible wouldn't be Ross Marquand's first live-action superhero film, but his role as The Immortal would be a huge change from Red Skull. Marquand played Red Skull in Avengers: Infinity War and while he wasn't nearly as evil as Hugo Weaving's version of the character in Captain America: The First Avenger , he still did an excellent job. It is proof he knows how to operate in the live-action superhero genre and, like Cohan and Payton, he has experience of playing a key character in The Walking Dead , which ensures he knows exactly what Kirkman's projects require.

With The Immortal expected to have a big storyline in Invincible season 3 , Marquand will continue to deliver his impressive performance as the character and could easily do so again in live-action. The Immortal needs someone capable of portraying the hero's stoic nature alongside his dark and troubled side and Marquand has already proven he can do this. His live-action work only helps cement him as an ideal choice for the character and there are even some visual similarities between Marquand and The Immortal that suggest he is destined to reprise this role.

2 Walton Goggins as Cecil Steadman

Walton goggins masterfully brings out cecil's cold & calculated personality.

Walton Goggins may be one of the most underrated actors around, and his Invincible character, Cecil Steadman, is one of the show's unsung heroes. Cecil is a complicated character, as while he has good intentions, he isn't against being cold and manipulative to get what he wants. Donald's cyborg twist in Invincible season 2 proves that Cecil will do what is best for America, regardless of the personal impact it has on individuals. Portraying such a complex character is a difficult task, but Goggins has mastered it like he has so many other roles.

Goggins has been acting since the 90s and has had a variety of memorable roles since then. He has been part of huge live-action shows like The Shield , Sons of Anarchy , and most recently, Fallout . Alongside this, he has worked with Quentin Tarantino on multiple occasions and even appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, showcasing his decades of experience. His seemingly unlimited versatility means that playing someone like Cecil is a fairly simple task for such a successful actor; therefore, Goggins is the best option to play him in the Invincible movie.

10 Invincible Scenes That Won't Look As Good In The Live-Action Movie

1 sandra oh as debbie grayson, sandra oh is irreplaceable as one of invincible's central characters.

While Invincible often focuses on the violent and bloody nature of being a superhero, a character like Debbie Grayson is essential to keeping the series grounded and Sandra Oh does this perfectly. Being the wife and mother of two powerful superheroes is hard enough without having powers of her own, but after Omni-Man's brutal betrayal in season 1, Debbie's role becomes so much more complicated. Oh does an incredible job at showing Debbie's vulnerabilities and struggles while still playing a strong mother for Mark.

Sandra Oh has been part of thrillers, dramas, horrors, and comedies, indicating that there are very few roles that would phase her. Taking Debbie into a live-action setting is something she is more than capable of doing and there won't be any CGI or superhero costumes involved in playing Debbie. Instead, she just has to bring her iconic acting skills and replicate her performance as Debbie on the big screen, and as long as she is interested in the role, there is no one more suited to play Debbie in Invincible 's live-action movie than Sandra Oh.

Invincible season 2 is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

Based on the comic book character by Robert Kirkman, Invincible follows Mark Grayson,  a seventeen-year-old who leads a seemingly average life save for the fact that he lives behind the shadow of his superhero father, Omni-Man. Mark goes on to develop superhuman abilities, but he must also learn that his father's legacy isn't as glitzy and glamorous as he's been led to believe.
