15 Best Travel Backpacks for Women in 2024

If you’re seeking the best travel backpack for women, this round-up of travel bags was created specifically for the female travelers out there.

15 Best Travel Backpacks for Women in 2024

Even if you’re new to travel, you likely already know that having a good backpack is crucial. And while it may seem convenient to lug around that old-school bag you’ve been using since the 8th grade, it’s not always the most practical choice. In my experience, a good travel backpack makes your travels a lot smoother.

There’s lots to consider. For example, security is a standard in good backpacks nowadays—does yours have anti-theft measures built-in? Does it fit comfortably? Is it ideal for hiking?

When I first started traveling I had no idea what I was doing, and ending up wasting money on the wrong backpacks for the wrong adventures. This list of the best travel backpacks for women will help you avoid the same mistakes.

Here are my top picks for the best travel backpacks for women, from weekend travel bags to one-bag travel carry-ons.

Cotopaxi Allpa 35L : Best Women's Travel Backpack Overall

Cotopaxi Allpa 35L

While it isn’t specifically designed as a women’s backpack, the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L is a popular choice for women looking for a good carry-on backpack for travel. It’s durable, stylish, and impressively functional.

This versatile backpack features a clamshell opening that makes it super easy to access anything in the main compartment without needing to dig. There are several zippered mesh compartments inside to keep everything organized. I’ve found I don’t really need packing cubes in this well-organized travel backpack.

The Cotopaxi Allpa is also impressively durable. It’s made from a burly 1000D polyester with a thick TPU coating that adds water and abrasion resistance. The YKK zippers are beefy and confidence-inspiring. I expect this to last much longer than a traditional backpack.

I love the external laptop pocket which makes it super easy to pull out my device for airport security. I hate having to dig through the main compartment to get to my laptop, so this is a welcome feature in this travel backpack.

The Allpa is also surprisingly comfortable with its padded hip belt, generously curved shoulder straps, and air mesh back panel.

I think the 35L size is perfect for most trips, and it’s especially good if you’re on the short side and need a backpack with a smaller torso length. If you need extra space, there’s a slightly larger 42L size . On the other end of the spectrum, the 28L version is perfect for super light packers and is small enough to fit under an airplane seat and count as your personal item on most flights.

  • Pros & Cons
  • Technical Specs
  • Easy packing with clamshell opening
  • Great internal organization
  • Impressive durability
  • Not many external pockets
  • A bit small for extended trips (the Allpa 42L will be better for some)

REI Co-op Ruckpack 40 Recycled Pack : Best Budget Travel Backpack for Women

REI Co-op Rucksack 40

REI is well known for its affordable yet awesome gear, and the REI Co-op Ruckpack Recycled Pack is no exception.

The design of this bag is built to fit women, with narrower straps and a larger hip belt for distributing weight better. Compression straps help pack down your gear and lift the load off your back more easily. The sternum strap even has a whistle for your extra security.

The REI Co-op Recycled Pack is versatile: it can function as a backpacking bag or as an outdoor backpack. There’s a daisy chain to attach more items, as well as trekking pole attachments and two water bottle holders. The padded hip belt and shoulder straps make for great comfort while hiking. This bag is way more versatile than most travel packs!

One thing it does lack is a well-padded laptop compartment, so keep this in mind if you’re planning to work on the road.

For a 40L, the price tag on this one is more than reasonable. Not only are you getting the best bang for your buck, but the REI Co-op Ruckpack Recycled Pack is also eco-friendly: it’s made with recycled materials that are bluesign® approved, helping you cut down on waste.

  • Designed for a women’s fit
  • Eco-friendly recycled materials
  • Great weight distribution
  • Comfortable shoulder straps
  • Side pockets keep water bottles and snacks accessible
  • Enough space for one-bag travel or trekking
  • The laptop sleeve lacks padding
  • Doesn't have many inner pockets
  • Less stylish than many travel packs

Aer Travel Pack 3 Small : Best Carry-On Backpack for Women

Aer Travel Pack 3

This is a bag jam-packed with organizational features that pair well with your busy day-to-day life, but is also perfect for taking along as a carry-on bag. It’s incredibly durable, great for keeping your belongings neat and tidy, and it counts as a personal item on most flights while still providing enough space for a week-long trip, as long as you travel light.

The design team created the Aer Travel Pack with the best of the best materials, like ballistic nylon. The material on this travel backpack is guaranteed to stand up to the test of time.

You can squeeze quite a few items into this bag for its small 28L capacity. The main compartment can lie flat when opened completely, which you’ll find very useful for quickly finding small items. Easy access is key for travel backpacks, and this little backpack definitely excels over a more traditional backpack design.

Other nifty organizational features include the easy-access laptop compartment and shoe pocket (that fits up to a men’s size 13). This bag is also chocked full of nifty storage pockets for your accessories, and the padded shoulder and side straps do a good job of easing the weight of the bag.

One downside to this bag: it has a whole lot of compression straps, which makes the bag quite bulky. There is a hip belt, but you have to buy it separately. That’s a small price to pay, though. Even at full capacity, the Aer Travel Pack 2 is ideal as a carry-on.

For more information check out our full Aer Travel Pack review or see our top picks for the best carry-on backpacks .

  • Easy access pockets and a main storage compartment that lies flat
  • Can handle 3-7 days worth of packing
  • Ultra-durable materials
  • Well-padded shoulder straps
  • Lots of straps
  • Hip belt is separate

Timbuk2 Impulse Travel Duffel Backpack : Most Large Travel Backpack for Women

Timbuk2 Impulse Travel Backpack Duffel

The designers at Timbuk2 made the  Impulse Travel Duffel Backpack  with road warriors in mind—this bag is meant to endure a lot . It’s water resistant, made with incredibly durable materials, and can switch between a duffel and a backpack within seconds.

You can easily store or locate all your tech items thanks to the clever storage system and clamshell shape of the bag. It has a plethora of pockets and storage compartments for your accessories and there is a dedicated padded laptop compartment too. Interior compression straps help pack down your clothing so you can fit more in.

This bag is great if you want to save on baggage fees because you can pack everything you need for a long weekend in it. You can even turn it into a duffel bag for when you’re going to be gone for extended periods of time.

There’s an impressive harness system too, making it easy to carry long distances if necessary.

If you’re in the market for a duffel, check out our full round-up of carry-on duffel bags .

  • Fits a 17″ laptop
  • Clever organization
  • Can turn into a duffel bag with a clamshell opening
  • Built-in shoe compartment keeps your dirty shoes separate
  • Doesn’t have a traditional shoulder strap
  • Zippers tend to be sticky and hard to maneuver

NOMATIC Travel Pack : Best Travel Laptop Backpack for Women

Nomatic Camera Backpack

The design team at NOMATIC named this backpack the “most functional travel pack ever.” I agree, and that’s why it’s my top pick for the best laptop backpack for women.

When you are using this bag as a carry-on, effortlessly slip the pass-thru shoulder straps onto your main luggage handle and wheel it along. The organization is fantastic. There’s a quick-access laptop compartment that also has space for a tablet. Then there is the main compartment, which you can compress by 50% when you don’t need to pack much.

The NOMATIC Travel Pack is also made with weather-resistant material, and the zippers are waterproof. This bag will keep out rain much better than most travel backpacks.

The one downside to this bag? The straps aren’t as padded as many other travel backpacks. They don’t have sufficient padding to make a long journey with this bag on your back comfortable, particularly in the 30L size.

Our NOMATIC Backpack review has more info.

  • Great functionality features, including pass-thru straps to attach to your wheeled luggage
  • Weather-resistant
  • More organized than most laptop backpacks
  • Not enough padding in the shoulder straps
  • Small for a travel backpack

Monos Metro Backpack : Most Stylish Backpack for Women

MONOS Metro Leather Backpack

The Monos Metro backpack is a real eye-catcher—its sleek, minimalistic design makes it one of the best stylish backpacks on the market.

This backpack has two options when it comes to materials: nylon twill with vegan leather accents or full ultra-microfibre vegan leather. The nylon twill and vegan leather are water-repellent and scratch-resistant.

My favorite thing about this backpack is the storage system. The Monos Metro’s clamshell design allows the main compartment to open and lie completely flat. No more fishing for loose socks at the bottom of your bag!

There is also a dedicated compartment for your laptop (maximum of 15”). The location of the laptop sleeve in the middle of the pack is great —it distributes the weight evenly throughout the bag. It’s also sandwiched between water-repellent and waterproof materials, so your gear stays good and protected.

Monos Metro bags come standard with the new QuickSnap™ Modular Kit System . This is a magnetic system that fixes the interchangeable Metro Kit to the backpack, which allows for fast detachment and easy re-attachment. This means you can store all your day-to-day essentials in there and grab them quickly when you’re on the go. Need to brush your teeth in-flight? Just unsnap the Metro Kit and go.

  • Water-repellent & scratch-resistant
  • Storage space opens up completely
  • Quicksnap system is included
  • Not much padding in the shoulder straps

Pacsafe Venturesafe Travel Pack 45L : Best Anti-Theft Backpack for Women

Pacsafe Venturesafe EXP 45

If you’re anything like me, safety is a top priority when it comes to traveling. Luckily, the team who designed the Pacsafe Venturesafe Travel Pack took most travel safety concerns into account. It’s one of the TravelFreak top picks for anti-theft backpacks . Seriously, this is the bank vault of travel backpacks.

Firstly, there’s the eXomesh Slashguard technology that protects the contents of your travel backpack’s front pocket. It’s basically a stainless steel wire mesh frame to stop flyby attacks (otherwise known as cut-and-runs).

There is also a Roobar Deluxe locking system in place, which is appealing for anyone who travels with lots of gear. This system allows you to secure your zips and anchor cable on a single lockdown point.

Other safety features of this travel backpack include ToughZip zippers, which are puncture-resistant and prevent luggage tampering, and a locking cable to attach your bag to a fixture.

The storage system is nifty and organizes your stuff well. It boasts a 45L capacity, which is more than enough for a carry-on. Its dimensions are also small enough to fit onto most planes as a carry-on.

You can use this bag on your everyday commute and not worry about your belongings. If you are looking for a long-lasting, versatile bag, then the Venturesafe Travel Pack 45L is your best bet.

  • Plenty of safety features to prevent theft
  • Effective storage system
  • Durable materials
  • When packed to the brim, it can be difficult to fit on your shoulders
  • Heavier than many travel backpacks

Kodiak Leather Katmai : Best Leather Backpack for Women

Kodiak Katmai Leather Backpack

There’s something special about leather travel backpacks. Probably because the materials are organic, and the design ends up being one-of-a-kind (and even looks better with age).

Kodiak uses premium cowhide leather for the Kodiak Leather Katmai , from its base to its reinforced support handle. The inside of the bag features black nylon which gives this travel backpack a smooth look.

This travel backpack boasts a 15” padded laptop pocket at the back, which fits a MacBook Pro very snugly. There are three zippered pockets (small, medium, and large) on the front of the bag. The main large pocket has individual pouches for wallets, phones, and pens.

Apart from the obvious productivity benefits, I like this travel backpack because it just looks great. The leather comes in a variety of stylish colors and adds some edge to your look.

If you’re someone who likes high-quality products that have personality, then the Kodiak Leather Katmai is a great fit for you. If you’re curious about other leather options, check out this round-up of leather backpacks.

  • It will last a lifetime if looked after properly
  • Made with high-quality leather
  • Lightweight
  • Not suitable for long periods of travel
  • Lacks padding in the shoulder straps

Tortuga Travel Backpack 40L : Best Digital Nomad Backpack for Women

Tortuga Setout Women's

Travel backpacks are the ideal solution for any busy professional who works while on the road, and the Tortuga Travel Backpack 40L is an excellent travel backpack for anyone who wants to travel with a carry-on only and skip the hassle of baggage claim.

The Tortuga Setout has a sturdy lockable zipper to protect your gear while you’re on the move. If you’re city hopping and doing lots of urban travel, this bag will keep you well organized (and your gear well protected) while you’re in transit.

It’s a compact bag that has a (surprisingly large) main luggage cavity and a few small compartments. The luggage compartment’s simple dividing system makes it easy for you to find items in a pinch. This bag likes to keep things simple, and that’s why I love it. Nothing is overdone. It’s a great balance between a simple rucksack and overly complicated travel backpacks that leave you wondering which pocket you put your passport in.

The shoulder straps are comfortable with plenty of padding as well. This is one of the best carry-on travel backpacks for comfort and support, in my experience. That’s especially helpful if you’re carrying heavier loads for an extended trip.

The Tortuga Travel Backpacks come in two sizes: the 30L and the 40L. 30L is toward the small end for travel packs, so unless you’re a really light packer, I don’t think you can go wrong with the 40L, which fits carry-on size restrictions around the world.

If you’re still not sure if this is the best carry-on backpack option, take a lookat our Tortuga Travel Backpack review . You can also check out more travel packs for carrying your computer on the go in our list of the best laptop backpacks .

  • Compact design great for carry-on
  • Simple storage system
  • 17’’ laptop compartment
  • Not suitable for outdoor use
  • The 45L bag may not be suitable for international airlines
  • More expensive than most travel packs

Osprey Fairview 40 : Best Carry-On Hiking Backpack for Women

Osprey Fairview 40 in black

The Osprey team created the Osprey Fairview 40 to fit a woman’s frame specifically, creating a hardy travel bag that will last you forever thanks to its durability and handy lifetime guarantee. Unlike many travel backpacks that are tailored for urban use, this one feels right at home on the trail.

This backpack comes in two sizes: XS/S and S/M. Both options are suitable if you’re shorter than six feet, and it has two adjustable front-compression straps to keep it compact against your back. The suspension system keeps the weight of the bag evenly distributed as well.

The Osprey Fairview travel packs come in two standard color schemes: rainforest green and misty grey. I love a darker color scheme because it tends to conceal dirt if you’re doing any trekking, unlike lighter colors.

Apart from looking great, this bag fits great too, and it has better support than most travel backpacks. As soon as you sling this backpack over your shoulders, you’ll notice how lightweight it feels. The straps are nice and narrow and feature a curved design for a comfortable fit.

I love the clamshell opening, padded laptop pocket, and variety of storage pockets, too. All in all, it’s a perfectly well-rounded backpack for any woman on the go.

  • Functional colors
  • Incognito strap system can be tucked away
  • Great suspension system
  • Works for both travel and hiking
  • Not suitable for women taller than six feet
  • Less stylish than more urban-themed travel backpacks

Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L : Best Digital Nomad Travel Backpack for Women

Peak Design Travel Backpack

I love this Peak Design Travel Backpack because it does it all: I can proudly carry it with me on work trips, it’s great for multi-day travel, and it’s also super organized for all my gear. It balances business function with a look that’s easy on the eyes. To me, it’s one of the most stylish travel backpacks on the market and will give you an ultra-professional look.

The organization of the Peak Design Travel Backpack is nothing short of genius, and it blows other travel packs out of the water. You can find a compartment for every one of your essentials and they’re all easy to reach via top, side, front, and rear access. Most travel backpacks have good organization, but the Peak Design Travel Backpack puts the rest of them to shame.

The whole bag is also made with a weatherproof nylon canvas shell that’s ideal for protecting your tech gear. The weatherproof zippers on the external storage pockets are another nice touch that give this bag one more advantage over other travel packs.

You can tuck away the shoulder straps for a more streamlined look and then you can grab the side handle to carry it like a briefcase. And, of course, there’s a well-padded laptop sleeve. If you need a bag to keep up with your diverse lifestyle, this is it. Read more about it in the full Peak Design travel bag review .

If you’re a light packer, you may opt for the smaller 30L Travel Backpack . It’s on the small end for travel packs, which is perfect if you don’t need much space.

  • Sleek and professional appearance
  • Top, rear, front, and side access
  • Tuckable straps
  • Lifetime guarantee
  • Comes with storage pockets for all your accessories
  • Side handle’s placement throws off the weight distribution if you carry sideways

Osprey Aura AG 65 : Best Backpacking Backpack for Women

Osprey Aura AG 65

If you’re looking for a backpacking bag that’ll accompany you on your travels for years to come, then the Osprey Aura AG 65 is for you. This is definitely a step up from most travel backpacks in terms of durability and comfort in the outdoors.

You’ll always stay comfortable and dry thanks to this bag’s plush yet breathable shoulder straps, ventilated waist belt, and breezy back panel. If you’re traveling in the summer months or to more tropical environments, you’ll appreciate these extra touches.

The key feature of this backpack is the Anti-Gravity (AG) suspension design. The new AG suspension technology does a great job of distributing the weight of the pack evenly.

This bag also boasts 65L of luggage capacity, which is more than enough for standard backpacking trips. However, its accessibility is what really sets it apart. I love all the large pockets because they allow you to access your essential items quickly and easily.

This bag has a main compartment and also a storage area for other gear, like camping gear. You can even turn this backpack into a daypack by removing the lid and taking away some of the storage space. It’s this versatility that makes it my top pick for a backpacking backpack!

  • Anti-Gravity suspension
  • Tons of padding in the shoulder straps
  • Supportive hip belt
  • Great for long backpacking trips
  • Detachable daypack
  • Plenty of storage pockets
  • Heavier than other travel packs
  • Too big for carry-on

Osprey Kyte 48 : Best Hiking Backpack for Women

Osprey Kyte 48

Osprey has never let me down when it comes to durability and functionality (it’s by far my favorite brand for outdoor and travel packs), and the same goes for the Osprey Kyte 48 .

This bag is a proper workhorse with tons of useful features. It comes with an integrated rain cover that’s very easy to attach and detach. A lot of travel packs don’t include a rain cover, so it’s great to see that this bag has one included.

Other awesome features include trekking poles and sleeping mat/hiking tent attachments, plus lots of pockets and organizational features to make this bag an outstanding bag for hikers.

The LightWire frame suspension system distributes most of the weight to your hips, so it feels very light while you’re walking. However, this bag uses the old-school back panel that fits tightly to your back, which doesn’t allow for great breathability if it’s hot.

This bag does well for overnight hikes of two to four days and it also passes as a carry-on at most airlines. However, if you are looking to pack a lot of food and extras, then you might struggle to fit everything into this pack.

This hiking backpack will be your lifelong hiking partner, thanks to Osprey’s lifetime guarantee. For other options, check out this article on the best hiking backpacks .

  • Great organizational features and storage pockets
  • Robust suspension system
  • Built-in rain cover
  • Attachments for sleeping gear and trekking poles
  • Lifetime guarantee
  • Very comfortable shoulder straps
  • Not enough room for multi-day hikes
  • The back panel is not very breathable

WANDRD PRVKE : Best Photography Backpack for Women

WANDRD PRVKE 41

The WANDRD PRVKE is the ultimate backpack for photographers. It has waterproof Tarpaulin material and ballistic nylon to ensure that the contents of your bag stay dry and safe from abrasions. You won’t have to worry about your camera gear (or any other gear) getting wet while you’re out in the field taking photos.

The organization of the bag is what really stands out to me compared to most travel backpacks. The optional camera cube fits nicely into the main compartment and you can grab it in a pinch. The laptop sleeve is strategically placed at the back so that, no matter how full it is, you can access your laptop easily too.

There are also pockets upon pockets in this bag so that you can store all your bits and bobs. This bag also comes in three sizes, depending on your luggage needs.Aesthetically, it comes in three stylish colors: black, Wasatch green, and Aegean blue. This bag really stands out from the crowd of same-old same-old travel packs.

The only real downside to this bag is that, at a standard weight of 3.7 pounds for the 41L option, it’s heavy when fully loaded. However, the materials used in this bag are top-quality, so this is a fair trade-off, in my opinion. For a more detailed breakdown, check out the WANDRD PRVKE review.

  • Camera-ready features
  • Waterproof and ultra-durable materials
  • Comfy shoulder straps
  • The camera cube costs extra
  • No hip belt

Patagonia Black Hole 25L : Best Daypack for Women

Patagonia Black Hole 25L

At first glance, the Patagonia Black Hole 25L doesn’t look like anything special. But it’s a sturdy bag that you can take everywhere with you on day adventures, whether that’s hiking, running errands, or meeting some friends at the park.

This backpack is technically water-resistant and not waterproof. That being said, the materials used in this bag are extremely water-resistant, so unless you drop the bag in the ocean or a giant puddle, your belongings are quite safe here.

The organizational features on this bag are good too. It has a compartment for your laptop and plenty of storage pockets to keep you organized.

If you are looking for a versatile daypack with great functionality without breaking the bank, then this backpack is worth checking out.

  • Weather-resistant and durable
  • Great organization
  • The laptop pocket is not easy to access and lacks padding

What to Look for in a Travel Backpack for Women

There isn’t much of a difference between travel backpacks for men and women, so the essential things you look for in a travel bag remain the same (like materials and durability, for example). There are, however, some things that make certain travel bags a better fit for women.

Is it a Good Fit for Women?

There’s more to a travel backpack than design, volume and features. A comfortable fit is absolutely the most important consideration for travel packs. When it comes to fit, you want to consider the shoulder straps and hip belt.

These features are usually designed to fit a women’s body better. The straps will usually have more padding and are narrower at the shoulders. The hip belt is usually larger too, to distribute the bulk of the weight to this area. This keeps the load lighter on your frame.

Is it a Fashionable Backpack for Women?

Fashion essentially boils down to the design and colors of the bag, and your own personal preference. I suggest going for bags that are sleek and low-profile so as not to draw additional attention to yourself, but honestly, I’ve never been caught up in how things look. Functionality is way more important here.

I will say that I much prefer dark colors, though. Colors like black and dark greens or blues are always great options for travel packs because these will show less dirt and scuff marks as you’re on the move.

Final Thoughts on the Best Travel Backpack for Women

I’ve included quite a selection of best women’s travel backpacks here, but now you’re more equipped to choose the right one for you. It really boils down to how you prefer to travel, and what you’ll be spending your time doing.Maybe that means hiking or city-hopping, or doing more work-oriented travel. Whatever the case, take some time to think about it—this bag should last you for a very long time.

If you tend to overpack (or do a lot of shopping on vacation), an expandable backpack offers added flexibility. Not only does this one offer extra space, but it also comes with functional details like a key leash, laptop sleeve, trolley sleeve, and water bottle pockets.

Fjällräven Kånken Water Resistant Backpack

Kånken Water Resistant Backpack

This Scandinavian backpack was originally produced in the 1970s for Swedish schoolchildren, but has since become iconic around the world thanks to its stylish yet practical design. The water-resistant material makes it durable, and the foam insert and cheerful color makes it a piece you'll be reaching for often.

What to look for when buying travel backpacks for women

✔️ Durability: A travel backpack is an investment piece that you'll hopefully get a lot of use out of, so there are several factors to consider before buying. The primary question to ask yourself is how you plan to use it, and whether it's important to buy something that you can use in a variety of settings. To get the most value out of your purchase, we recommend looking for features that offer versatility and durability, such as high-quality, water-resistant material.

✔️ Support and comfort: Additionally, whether or not you have back issues, it's important to consider the level of support a backpack offers. Opting for lightweight packs, with cushioned back panels, and ergonomic straps will protect your shoulders (and will also make for a much more pleasant wearing experience.)

✔️ Style and special features: Lastly, taking into account your personal style and any must-have features will help narrow down the many options available. Take time to think about if the aesthetic is a top priority, or if a different aspect such as organizational capabilities or eco-friendly manufacturing is more important to you. The good news is that if you're really having difficulty deciding, there's always the option to purchase more than one backpack for different occasions.

  • Why is a travel backpack helpful? Rolling luggage certainly makes transporting your heaviest items easier, but it does require the use of one or both hands. Especially if you're traveling lighter, or for transit that occurs after those initial trips to/from the airport, a backpack allows you to move about hands-free, while still carrying more than you could with a smaller bag or purse.
  • What size backpack can I bring on a plane? If you're using the backpack as your primary piece of carry on luggage, the maximum dimensions are typically 22 inches long, 14 inches wide and 9 inches high. If you're using it as a personal item stowed under the seat in front of you, it shouldn't exceed 18 inches long, 14 inches wide and 8 inches high.

best travel backpacks for women

If you’re going travelling for a long period of time, you need a decent backpack. So I’ve collected top tips from some of my favourite travel bloggers to bring you this round-up of the best travel backpacks for women.

This post is specifically aimed at female travellers. Because we’re often a different size and shape to men, our needs when it comes to choosing a backpack can be different.

I’ve also included my guide to choosing the right travel backpack for you, as well as lots of tips for what to look out for, and features that will make living out of a backpack a bit easier.

After spending several years travelling constantly, living as a “digital nomad” for a time with nothing BUT my backpack, and taking hundreds of trips both long and short, I know exactly how important a decent travel backpack is.

But I also know that all travellers are different, so what I deem the best travel backpack won’t necessarily suit all women. This is why I’ve asked some fellow travel bloggers to share their tried-and-tested recommendations – including smaller bags for those light-packing “hand luggage only” gals, bigger packs, and even wheeled backpacks.

Use the contents list below to skip ahead to the section you need, or just read through the whole post for inspiration. And feel free to reach out in the comments if you want more tips about women’s travel backpacks – or to share a recommendation of your own…

How to choose a travel backpack – checklist.

Some of the backpacks included below were gifted to me or to the bloggers who recommended them, and some brands have paid for placement on this list. But all opinions are 100% honest – as always!

best backpacks for female travellers

When it comes to choosing the best backpack for you, it all depends on a few factors. First of all – YOU. The best backpack for you depends on your size, shape, height, strength… all kinds of things. So the BEST way to choose the perfect backpack is to try a few on , preferably in-store with an expert to help you.

Since the prices online are often cheaper, though, you could always order several backpacks and try them all, decide which is best, then send the others back. That way you can fill them up with a bunch of clothes and try them on to see how they’ll actually feel on the road . Make sure you check the returns policy before you buy, though!

Here’s what to look for when trying on a backpack…

Big thanks to the experts at Mountain Warehouse for these top tips for choosing a backpack that’s right for you…

Size – The first step when choosing a backpack is to decide on the size. Smaller capacity backpacks (40-55L) are perfect for shorter trips, travelling in warm/hot climates as you won’t need to pack bulky clothes, or just someone who prefers travelling light. Also, most airlines will allow this size bag on the plane free of charge. However, if you are visiting somewhere more chilly or need to pack more belongings, you might want to consider a large backpack.

RELATED POST: Craghoppers Kiwi Classic Bags Review

Fit – Next thing is to ensure the backpack will sit comfortably on the hips. Look for the one with a soft but rigid hip belt that’s at least 10cm wide. Also look for an adjustable back system which will allow you to fix the backpack frame to fit your torso and help to divide the weight between your shoulders, back and waist.

Features you NEED from a Travel Backpack

Although everyone’s needs are different, when it comes to choosing the perfect backpack for travel, there are a few key features that can make life easier. All the awesome women’s backpacks nail most, if not all, my favourite features…

1 – A pack that opens all the way around . Traditional backpacks like the ones designed for hiking tend to open at the top only, which means you have to unpack everything to reach stuff at the bottom. That’s fine on short trips or if you’re mostly staying in one place, but if you’re going to be packing and unpacking every few days on a long-term backpacking trip it’ll drive you crazy. Look for a backpack that unzips all the way around at the front – it’ll make life so much easier.

2 – Great organisation.

3 – Plenty of space .

4 – Durability . You want a backpack that will go as far as you do, and not suddenly break halfway around the world. I’ve seen it happen and it’s a massive pain! Durability is key in a backpack for long term travel.

5 – A great fit . The only way to find the right fit for you is to try your backpack on (and look for the features mentioned in the section above.). Make sure the hip belt is comfy and the back system can be adjusted to suit your frame.

6 – Female-specific straps . Since men and women tend to have slightly different body shapes, it’s worth looking for a backpack that was designed with the female frame in mind. The best ones have put a lot of thought and research into creating a fit that works best with the female body.

Best Big Women’s Travel Backpacks

Larger backpacks are perfect for longer trips, especially if you’re headed to multiple countries and need to pack for more than one climate.

My tip, though, is never to fill them completely – too full and your pack will be annoyingly heavy, which is not fun for a long trip! These travel backpacks are perfect for female travellers hearing RTW…

Pros : Long-lasting and super durable. Unzips at the front. Great value. Huge!

Cons : Can be a bit too tall for some. Heavy when over-packed. Not specifically for women.

Price : From £59.99 / $69.99 – check the latest prices here (or HERE if you’re in the USA ).

14 of the Best Travel Backpacks for Women [2024]

For almost 5 years, the Mountain Warehouse Traveller Rucksack followed me around the world. It survived multiple months-long trips, hundreds of flights, and countless bus rides. I dropped it all the time, dragged it along airport floors, sat on it while waiting for trains to show up, and generally put it through hell! And in the end, it was only replaced when I got sent a newer backpack. Poor thing!

Read my review in full here .

I’d be happy to wholeheartedly recommend this pack just for its supreme durability. But more than that, it’s a lovely big backpack that’s perfect for long-term travel. Especially if you’re heading to multiple climates or timezones and need to pack quite a lot.

The downside is that it’s quite bulky, and when it’s stuffed it can be on the too-heavy size. So don’t overpack it! It also comes with an extra 20L daypack that can be zipped to the main bag to create an 80L monster (I don’t recommend it). Great space, really easy to pack/unpack and organise, and seriously hard-core. I love this backpack.

Pros : Female-specific frame. Unzips at the front. Super durable.

Cons : Bulky / possibly too big for some. Not very rigid which makes packing trickier.

Price : From £49.97. Click here to check the latest prices .

This 60L backpack from Berghaus is pretty big, so it looks a little daunting. But the super-adjustable female-specific straps mean that you can make it really comfortable. So if you pack right and don’t overfill it the bag is ideal.

It’s made from a thick, durable feeling material, and lasted ages. In fact, I sold it so it’s probably still going strong for some other traveller.

The size of the Berghaus Motive is great. You can fit tons in, and opens at the front so everything is easily accessed. Weirdly, the zip opens around the strap side which means you have to pack the bag “upside-down” so to speak. It’s not an issue, but feels strange! And the sides aren’t rigid, so the bag feels kind of like a sack – it makes packing difficult but if you use packing cubes it should be easy to keep everything in place.

Pros : Fits very comfortably. Lots of pockets. Very colourful!

Cons : None!

Price : From £250. Check the latest prices here .

best travel backpacks for women

Recommended by Claudia from My Adventures Across the World :  Osprey Ariel 65 is a great backpack for long-term travellers. It has plenty of pockets where to fit everything that is needed for a backpacking trip. The main body of the backpack completely opens, allowing easy access to everything inside, thanks to a zip that goes almost completely around it.

The two side pockets are perfect to carry shoes or flip flops. However, the best thing about Ariel 65 is the way it perfectly fits to the body, so that regardless of its weight, it is easy and comfortable to wear and to carry, even on the messy streets of India.

Best Carry-On Travel Backpacks for Women

There are a lot of benefits to taking a hand-luggage sized backpack. If you never have to check it in, then you cut out the wait times at airports – and you lose the risk of an airline losing your bag. Plus a smaller, lighter backpack is easier to manage.

Personally, though, I can’t pack that light – and I like taking full-sized bottles of shampoo etc. Carry-on-sized backpacks aren’t for everyone, but if you’re a pro at minimalist packing this could be for you. Check out these top-rated carry-on-sized travel backpacks for women…

READ MORE – I also have a list of 16 incredible carry on backpacks for women , which features a lot more recommendations.

Pros: Made from recycled plastic. Opens all the way around in the middle, with storage on both sides like a suitcase. Massive capacity. TONS of pockets! Very comfy to carry.

Cons: Might be a touch too big for some airlines’ carry on allowance (but you can use the compression straps to get it down to size).

Price: £195

The Adventure Bag from Stubble & Co has recently become my favourite carry on size backpack, thanks to its huge 42L capacity and awesome organisational hacks.

Although not specifically designed for women, this awesome travel backpack is super adjustable so you can fit it to your frame – and includes an all-important removable waist strap, as well as big, padded straps and a padded back. So it’s comfy to carry even over long periods of time.

My favourite feature, though, is that the bag opens out from the middle with storage space on both sides – like a suitcase – with dividers for added organisation. This is the ultimate travel backpack for keeping organised. There are five extra pockets, including a small hidden one, a laptop sleeve, and a card pocket built into the strap.

flat lay photo of a black backpack open with an orange interoior, one side is closed with a black mesh cover and the other side contains a camera, pink sunglasses, and a white wash bag

Another brilliant touch is the trolley sleeve, which means you can attach The Adventure Bag to your suitcase’s handle for easy transportation.

The Adventure Bag is super durable, built to last, weighs just 1.8kg, and folds down small for storage when you’re not using it. Oh, and it’s made from recycled plastic! What more could you ask for?

Pros : Super comfortable for long wear. Plenty of pockets and on-the-go loops to attach things to. Space for a hydration water pack. Great value

Cons : Can only access the contents of the bag from the top (no bottom zip). It has so many pockets you forget where you put things!

Price : From £150 Click here for the latest prices .

best travel backpacks for women

Recommended by Samantha from The Wandering Wanderluster: I purchased the Osprey Tempest 30 for my month-long walk on the Camino de Santiago . For long hikes such as these, it is better to have a backpack that is not too big and not too heavy.

The Osprey Tempest 30 is lightweight, had plenty of pockets that you can easily reach while on the go and its adjustable straps and backrest was great to modify the bag to suit your height and body shape. And the best part is that you can take it on a flight with you, since its small size means you don’t have to check it in!

Pros: Large foam-padded laptop sleeve for optimum protection. Ultra organised – 26 pockets! Super durable and sturdy. Fits a lot in.

Cons: A little on the smaller size – great for budget weekend trips, not suitable for long-term travels.

Price: £129.99 – get 10% off with my LEVEL8 discount code: emilyluxton10.

blonde girl in yellow jumper standing in field wearing a black travel backpack

Although not specifically designed for women, this fab carry-on travel backpack is ideal for gals who need to keep organised. The LEVEL8 Atlas Laptop Backpack is especially handy for anyone travelling for work, as there’s a roomy laptop compartment that’s protected with foam padding to keep everything safe.

The heavily padded back and straps mean it’s comfy to wear, and the straps can be adjusted to suit your frame. I particularly love the super-strong top handle which is reinforced with a metal cable.

But the best thing about this bag is its organisation! It’s been designed with business travellers in mind so it’s perfect when I’m on a work trip. There’s a roomy front pocket with multiple internal dividers, a large top pocket for travel docs and valuables, two zipped side pockets for water bottles or umbrellas etc, and more. Plus the laptop compartment has multiple sections within it, so you can also take a tablet or e-reader etc.

At 31L capacity, this backpack is a little on the smaller side, but would be great for overnight breaks or short trips. And it’s so durable and protective that it’s absolutely perfect for bloggers travelling with laptops and camera gear etc.

READER DISCOUNT: Use the code emilyluxton10 for 10% off.

Pros : Opens out like a suitcase. Supportive straps. Straps foldaway. Laptop pocket. European hand luggage size.

Cons : A bit pricey. Can exceed hand-luggage size if overfilled!

Price : From £121.99. Click here to check the latest prices .

14 of the Best Travel Backpacks for Women [2024]

Recommended  by Rohan from Travels of a Bookpacker:  The Osprey Farpoint 40 is the perfect backpack for a range of trips. The padded straps and waist belt give good support and make it super comfortable to wear for long periods. The straps also fold away if you want to check it in as hold luggage.

Read Rohan’s review of the Osprey Farpoint here!

There’s a good range of pockets, from the small outer pocket to the padded laptop pocket and a netted internal pocket. There are also compression straps inside and out to keep everything safe and as small as possible. The zips are all lockable and it comes in a variety of colours. This hand-luggage-sized backpack is all you need for long or short trips!

UPDATE: A newer addition from Osprey is the Fairview , which is a women’s-specific version of the Farpoint. More or less the same backpack, but designed with a woman’s shape in mind.

Pros : Holds a surprising amount of stuff! Plenty of external pockets. Super comfy. Designed with a woman’s shape in mind.

Cons : Not small enough to count as a carry-on for many of the budget airlines in Europe. No place to tuck away the straps when checking bag.

Price : From £127.99. Click here to check the latest price .

14 of the Best Travel Backpacks for Women [2024]

Recommended by Toccar from Forget Someday : After doing a lot of research on women’s backpacks, I came to the conclusion that the Kelty Women’s Redwing 40-Liter Backpack was the right pack for me! And after travelling round the world for 20 months, turns out I made the right choice! This is definitely one of the best travel backpacks for women.

This pack holds a surprisingly large amount of items. My eBags packing cubes fit perfectly, allowing me to keep my backpacking essentials nice and organized throughout our travels.

The pack has padded back shoulder and waist straps, comfortably designed with a woman’s shape in mind. I really appreciated the non-obtrusive metal spine and padded laptop sleeve that kept my valuables protected during travel. I like that it is a (mostly) front-loading backpack, which makes packing and unpacking the contents a breeze!

Pros : Easy-to-use design and functionality.

Cons : A little boxy.

Price: $350 USD (£277)

Recommended by Katie from Study Hard Travel Smart:  I have been using my Tortuga Travel Backpack for several years, and it has served me well on short weekend trips as well as multi-week backpacking excursions. It’s carry-on sized, and I’ve never had trouble getting it through an airport and onto the plane.

The best thing about this backpack is that it opens like a suitcase, so that you can open it all the way to see what’s inside. It also has a zipped compartment on the top which provides easy access to the laptop storage compartment, but I’ve found this also makes it easy to access items quickly without having to unzip the whole thing.

The shoulder straps can be stored in a zipped compartment if you want to check the bag, which prevents any damage to the loose parts. I’m also a fairly short female traveller (about 5’4”), and this travel backpack is the perfect height for me! I have yet to find a better, more intuitive, or more conveniently designed backpack; this one has been the perfect one for me.

Pros : Very comfortable. Perfect size even for low-cost airlines. Great looks

Cons : Not fully waterproof.

Price : From £95 (or the classic CabinZero 44L from £65).

best backpacks for female travellers

Recommended by Veronika from Travel Geekery : This backpack has been a game-changer for me. I’ve had packing issues for ages and have always overpacked. Carrying a weekend load on my back seemed impossible to do and I usually ended up dragging a wheeled suitcase everywhere. But with the CabinZero bag, I finally made it. It helped the bag pack in more than it appears to – the shape exactly copies the carryon limits of all airlines, including low cost carriers.

The back is padded and yet it’s very lightweight. My laptop fits well into a separate pocket inside. I can easily pack a 5-day load in it, but I imagine packing pros can travel long-term with it.

Read Veronika’s full review of the CabinZero Military here .

The bag is comfortable to carry around for several hours. And I shouldn’t forget the looks – I think it looks great to any outfit. I wear it with skirts and dresses too and my boyfriend still finds it manly enough as well.

There’s a tracking tag sewn in and if the bag gets checked in and lost, you can track its position online. All in all, CabinZero is now my loyal companion on all short trips around Europe!

Pros : Anti-theft features. Smart design (good for business travel). Opens like a suitcase.

Cons : Less comfy to wear than a trekking backpack.

Price : From £249. Check out the latest prices here .

14 of the Best Travel Backpacks for Women [2024]

Recommended by Kathi from Watch Me See : I travel a lot for uni and usually only take a carry-on with the essentials. I use a 45L Pacsafe backpack rather than a small suitcase, because I love having my hands free!

The bag easily fits all my stuff, has a padded laptop sleeve and is compatible with the size of my packing cubes. It looks much more sophisticated than a regular backpack, which is great if I have to bring it to a conference venue or business hotel. But even as a backpacker is super handy, because it has several anti-theft features and all the right pockets for my valuables. I like that it’s such an all-rounder bag that works for quick getaways as well as longer journeys!

Best Backpacks with Wheels

Perhaps you’re not quite the “carry all my stuff on my own back” type, or you fancy yourself more of a flashpacker. Why not consider a backpack with wheels? They tend to be a little heavier, which makes them annoying if you do ever have to carry them on your back. But I have one which I’ve taken on several trips and have never had to pick it up!

If you’re not going to be hiking with all your gear, chances are you’ll only need to get your backpack from airport carousels to a taxi, or from a bus to a hostel – which means you probably won’t have to pick it up. Here are some top tips for wheeled travel backpacks for women to help you choose…

Pros : Light-weight. Durable. Removable backpack straps.

Cons : Comes with a lame daypack which shares the same backpack straps. Only one outside pocket on main pack.

UPDATE: The DoubleBack is now the Gear Warrior Convertible Carry On ($299 USD – roughly £235).

14 of the Best Travel Backpacks for Women [2024]

Recommended by Christine from Grrrl Traveler : The Eagle Creek Doubleback 22 is a killer convertible backpack carry-on with wheels. Being a female solo travel blogger and YouTuber, I juggle a lot of gear in my day pack, so I like to stay light and mobile with my luggage. I love that this is aircraft carryon compliant, allows me to fit into tight spaces and it forces me to pack smart. It’s rugged, durable and takes a beating, but it’s stylish enough to “fit in at hotels”.

Mostly, I love that I have the option to add on removable straps to transform it into a backpack if I’m running for a train, collapse it to wheels if I’m tired or carry it by a strap. It’s a speedy process. The only con is it comes with a bit of a flimsy zip-on day pack (which I don’t use) as it also shares the same straps. Once you have it, you won’t go back to a backpacker’s backpack.

Click here to read Christine’s review of the Eagle Creek Doubleback 22 and watch her video to get a better view of the backpack.

Osprey Sojourn 60

Pros : Tons of space. Unzips all the way around. Really durable. It has wheels!

Cons : Probably too heavy when full to actually carry on your back.

Price : From £330 GBP ( check latest prices here )

Osprey Sojourn 60 Review

Read my review of the Osprey Sojourn 60 for more info.

I absolutely LOVE the Osprey Sojourn 60 wheeled travel backpack – which is perfect for women who want to pack a lot and don’t always want to carry it! A wheeled backpack gives you the best of both worlds. You can wear it on your back when you need to, or drag it behind you when you don’t.

Although if I’m being honest I don’t think I’ve ever carried mine on my back. The big, super sturdy wheels are like “off-road” wheels when compared to the ones you normally get on wheels suitcases – perfect for adventurous travellers.

It’s got tons of space, loads of pockets (including a handy top pocket for easy access), and it’s super durable. What more could you want?

Pros : It has wheels and backpack straps so it’s perfect for people who prefer a wheeled case but might need to carry it occasionally.

Cons : It isn’t the lightest or comfiest to carry due to the wheels but it’s fine for carrying it short distances.

Price : From £270 (the Fast Track is no longer available, but the newer Sky Master 70L Wheeled Travel Pack looks very similar. Check the latest prices here . )

14 of the Best Travel Backpacks for Women [2024]

Recommended by Monica from The Travel Hack : The Caribee Fast Track Wheeled Backpack is a great option for anyone who isn’t sure if they’ll need a backpack or a suitcase because this bag is both.

I’m not a fan of backpacks and would always rather wheel my case but there are times when I need to carry it so this is great. Handy compartments and a detachable daypack mean your stuff is always organised and it’s great quality so it’ll see you through a lot of adventures!

Deuter has one of the best backpacks for females. Virtually each of their trekking, hiking, and mountaineering packs have an SL (short length) version that is specifically designed for the female anatomy. ?

Ah I’ve heard good things about Deuter from some German backpackers I met recently! But dot hey have ones that open in the front or is it just hiking backpacks?

They have models that open in the front. :) They have different kinds of backpacks–hiking, trekking, biking, etc. And they have other packs designed for school use, travel, urban/lifestyle, etc.

Deuter is an excellent brand. :)

I always go to heavy when buying a backpack. Mine has lasted a good 4 years now so happy with that one :)

I always go too heavy when packing my backpack haha! But my new Fairview from Osprey is super light, I love that about it :)

This post is a handy summary. I am currently looking for a backpack for my wife’s birthday present and this has helped focus my selection process. Thank you!

Oooh that’s awesome news!! I can really recommend the Fairview range from Osprey, I have the big one and another blogger recommended the carry on size :)

This is SO HELPFUL. I’m considering a CabinZero 44L for a few upcoming trips, so it’s good to know a bit about it from a traveller’s actual perspective.

Awesome!!! So good to hear you’re considering one of the backpacks on the list. I personally really struggle with carryon sized luggage but I’ve heard from a few bloggers that this one makes it much easier to downsize!

Hi, my name is Lily Rose i am a journalist and always carry my laptop from one place to another place for reporting, but I have no right backpack for my laptop and camera. my question is that can we use these backpacks for the camera and laptop, or you have written any post on those types of bags please guide and inform me. thanks

These are all luggage-sized backpacks, designed to fit a lot of gear for long-term backpacking and travel. So your laptop and camera would fit in any of them. A few that specifically mention being good for laptops are Osprey Farpoint / Fairview, Pacsafe Venturesafe, and Kelty Women’s Redwing. All of those have padded laptop pockets. The Tortuga Travel Backpack and CabinZero also mention being good for laptops. Hope that helps :)

Wow, It is a great collection of backpacks with amazing designs and colors. As I am planning to go on a long trip so I need the perfect backpack badly. From the above list, I would love to have Osprey Ariel 65 backpack as it plenty of pockets, quality fabric, and my fav red color that make it the best fit for me. Incredible traveller backpacks for women! Thanks for giving us an opportunity to go through such a great collection.

Thanks for reading!!

Shopping for a backpack was fun the first two shops I went in but after trying on what seemed like 30 backpacks and none of them fitting the novelty wore off. Luckily I took my Dad along an apparent backpack expert, although I tried men’s backpacks as well there was no way they were gonna fit, plus my Dad had this great fear that I would keel over backward and worse maybe onto a road! lol In the end I had to special order in a women’s backpack specifically for apparently very very short people! (I didn’t realize I was that abnormally short!)

Men’s vs Women’s backpacks as long as it can be adjusted to fit your body then your all good!

Adjustability is SO important! But women are often shorter/smaller than men, so women’s backpacks are usually going to be a better fit! Plus they often have a more curved back, I guess women have curvier figures than men?! My Osprey women’s backpack is the best and comfiest I’ve ever used!

Wonderful edit of womens backpacks. Perfect backpacks to carry our stuff easily and make a fashion statement.

Thanks Cairin!

Hello Emily, I found your post on the best backpacks for women travelers very informative and helpful. As a female backpacker myself, I understand how important it is to find the right backpack that fits well and meets our specific needs. I have been thinking about purchasing the Osprey Aura AG 65 backpack, and your review has convinced me that it would be a great investment for my next trip. Thank you for sharing your expertise on this topic. Looking forward to reading more of your posts.

Thanks so much for commenting Cairi – hope you like the backpack! So glad this post was helpful in narrowing your choice down :)

Hi Emily – What is your ‘go-to’ backpack if you go to Paris for a long weekend? Thank you

To be honest, I’d usually take a hard shell cabin suitcase on a long weekend. But I do love my Osprey Fairview (the women’s version of the Farpoint mentioned above). It opens right out and the straps are super comfy and supportive.

If you’re travelling super light with just the under-seat “personal” item that comes free, then Cabin Max have some great, reasonably priced options. Their Travel Hack backpack is the perfect size and really pretty: https://thetravelhack.com/suitcase/the-travel-hack-backpack/

Best travel backpack for women, carry on size: 30-40 litre packs.

Hynes Eagle Carry On Backpack

Hynes Eagle Carry on Backpack 38L Large Travel Backpack for Women Flight Approved Weekender Bag Laptop Backpack Men 15 inches Black Grey

If you don’t feel like spending hundreds of dollars on a backpack, then this is one of your best options.  The Hynes Eagle Carry-On is a unisex backpack , with a price tag of around $50. The exact price depends on the color that you want to pick up.

It’s very affordable, and you will get amazing value for money. The backpack is made from polyester and features a padded and ventilated backpanel. The shoulder straps are also covered with breathable mesh, and they are stowable.

The durability of this backpack is not really premium – you will notice some wear and tear sooner than you would on an Osprey backpack. However, that’s to be expected of a backpack that’s this affordable.

You have to compromise on something; with Amsterdam, you are getting a carry-on with a large capacity, lots of pockets for organization, and multiple compartments.  But you’re compromising on durability.

The pack features  a laptop sleeve that will easily fit 15.6” laptops, and can even fit some slimmer 17” laptops. It opens up suitcase-style, which allows for easy packing. And the  internal straps will hold all your clothes in place . There are also external compression straps, which allow you to reduce the size of the pack when it is not at full capacity.

Another thing worth noting is that this pack features  an organizational panel in the front compartment. It has a large sleeve that can easily fit your tablet and several smaller slip and zip pockets for all your other necessities.

  • Great value for money
  • Adjustable and stowable backpack straps
  • Good organizational features
  • Durability of materials could be improved

Monos Metro Backpack

Monos is known for creating high-quality modern luggage and their Metro backpack is no exception. If you want a sleek and stylish bag for travel, this is one of the top options. It’s even a great choice for travel in Europe, because the backpack is small enough to fit under the seat with most carriers.

The Monos Metro bag is made from nylon or vegan leather , for a sleek but luxurious look and feel. It’s got a 15” laptop compartment, multiple internal and external pockets, and even a luggage strap in the back so you can mount it on top of your suitcase.

The front of the backpack has an attachment point for the Metro Folio kit . This is a small organizer that you attach to the front of the backpack and that looks just like a regular backpack front pocket. It’s a good item to have if you need an organizer, but it’s worth noting that it’s quite expensive for what it is.

The same could be said about the Metro backpack alone – it’s a more expensive option but if you want a premium bag and you don’t mind paying for quality, Monos Metro might just be the bag you’re looking for.

  • High-quality construction
  • Multiple internal and external pockets
  • Padded laptop sleeve
  • No breathable mesh on the back system
  • Dimensions: 11.5" × 16.5" × 6"
  • Weight: 2.4 lb (nylon) / 3 lb (vegan leather)
  • Capacity: 18 liters

The North Face Router

THE NORTH FACE Router Backpack Tnf Black One Size

The TNF Router  is an amazing travel backpack. It’s  remarkably versatile – with multiple compartments, loads of pockets, and a few attachment points, this is a backpack you will feel comfortable with both in the air and on the trail.

It is  a unisex laptop backpack though, so there are no women’s specific features on it. However, it is a super popular all-rounder daypack that is great for city trips or even a day out hiking

This backpack features a TSA-friendly 17″ laptop compartment in the back, with thick padding for great shock absorption.

The  main compartment is very spacious and has an internal zippered pocket.  It’s large enough to fit clothes for a weekend trip, and you can fit everything else in the front compartment and the five external pockets. That front compartment features an organizer panel with a tablet sleeve, smartphone pocket, and a bunch of other smaller slip and zippered pockets.

The Router is equipped with the FlexVent suspension system, for excellent carrying comfort. Both the back panel and harness are very breathable, and the ventilation of this backpack is really great. It is even endorsed by the ACA (American Chiropractic Association), so there’s no doubt that it will feel really comfortable on your back.

The only downside of this travel backpack is the hip belt – it’s rather thin, so it might cut into your waist a little bit if you carry it for too long.

  • Great for organization
  • TSA friendly laptop (17”) compartment
  • Endorsed by ACA
  • No padding on the hipbelt
  • No color or size variety
  • Dimensions: 21” x 13.75” x 8”
  • Weight: 3lbs 4.91oz
  • Capacity: 35 liters

SWISSGEAR 1900 Scansmart TSA Laptop Backpack

SwissGear 1900 Scansmart TSA 17-Inch Laptop Backpack, Black

If you’re primarily looking for a functional carry-on, then this  SwissGear  backpack  is a good option. It has some features that will make your life easier, especially if you tend to travel with lots of electronics. Even when compared to its close relative, the 1923 .

The backpack features a dedicated TSA-friendly compartment for those electronics. The laptop sleeve is padded and has a zipper closure.  It can fit most 17” laptops,  which is pretty great. There’s also a floating tablet sleeve in this compartment.

The  ergonomic shoulder straps are adjustable, and padded, and feature a loop attachment point for your sunglasses . There is also padding in the  Airflow back panel , which promises great carrying comfort.

The travel backpack has awesome organizational features. The main packing compartment is very spacious and has a media pocket with a headphone port. In addition to that, there is also a large zippered pocket in this compartment, as well as a smaller slip pocket – perfect for organizing all your chargers and cables.

The laptop backpack also features four additional zippered pockets, one of which has an organizer panel for all your smaller items. There are also two water bottle pockets that are just the right size to hold water bottles.

  • Excellent organizational features
  • TSA friendly laptop compartment
  • Airflow backpanel is comfortable
  • No hipbelt or sternum strap
  • Not a good replacement for a suitcase – small capacity
  • Dimensions: 18.5" x 13.5" x 9"
  • Weight: 3.2 lbs (shipping weight)
  • Capacity: 31 liters

40-50 liters (Medium)

In this section, I will show you some of the best backpacks for women that have a capacity between 40 and 50 liters. A couple of them are small enough that they will be accepted as carry ons, despite their large capacity.

Fjallraven Travel Pack

Fjallraven Women's Travel Backpack, Green, One Size

Fjallraven is known for the very simple and stylish Kanken , but this stylish backpack is packed full of travel features – The Fjallraven Travel backpack . It is  made from recycled polyester and organic cotton, and it is coated for excellent water resistance. This backpack is very durable, and you will be able to use it for a really long time.

The Travel Pack features a padded laptop compartment (fits 15” laptops) with additional pockets for your tablet, documents, etc. That compartment is all the way in the pack, and it can be fully opened. This allows you to get through TSA checkpoints very quickly.

The  main compartment of the pack opens up clamshell-style, and it is divided into several packing compartments. The bottom side features a large packing compartment with a zippered divider, and the top side of the pack is divided into two smaller compartments.

All of this allows for easy organization, which is pretty important for travel. You also get  two external pockets on the front panel  that you can use for any items you would want to have handy at all times.

This Fjallraven backpack is  a women’s specific design.  It’s a bit smaller than the men’s version, and the shoulder straps are slightly shorter. The  harness is covered with breathable mesh, for great ventilation . Additionally, the shoulder straps are stowable, and the back looks rather sleek when you put them away.

Unfortunately, you won’t have a great back panel on this backpack, which is one downside.

Being a Fjallraven, also means it is a more fashionable travel backpack that is more suited to ladies. On top of that, its small size means it is perhaps the best travel backpack for petite females.

  • Clamshell opening for easy packing
  • Backpanel is not ventilated
  • Pretty pricey
  • Dimensions: 18 in x 12.5 in x 10.5 in (45.7 x 31.8 x 26.7 cm)
  • Weight: 3.65 lb (1.7 kg)

Kroser Laptop Backpack

KROSER Laptop Backpack 15.6 Inch Stylish Backpack Doctor Bag Water Repellent College Casual Daypack with USB Port Travel Business Work Bag for Men/Women-Black

The Kroser laptop backpack is excellent if you want something fashionable and stylish but affordable. It’s one of the cheapest backpacks featured in this review, but by no means is that a bad thing.

This backpack is suitable for women who need a smaller bag to carry all the items they want to have easily accessible during travel. It’s got a 15.6” laptop sleeve , a smaller tablet sleeve, and a bunch of open pockets, in addition to the roomy main compartment.

The backpack also has a USB port so that you can charge your phone on the go, as well as quite a wide opening, so that all your items are easily accessible at first glance. You could pack for a shorter trip in this backpack – it’s small enough to pass as an underseat bag on most airlines, with budget carriers excluded.

The Kroser backpack is made from quality leather for a sleek and modern look. It’s got padded shoulder straps , but it’s necessary to point out that the carrying comfort you experience with this pack is not the best. You are sacrificing comfort and durability for affordability, so keep that in mind.

  • Very affordable
  • Small enough to pass as an underseat bag on most planes
  • Padding in the back system could be thicker
  • No breathable mesh on back panel
  • No hip belt or sternum strap
  • Dimensions: 16.9" x 11.15" x 7.5"
  • Weight: 1.82 lbs
  • Capacity: Not specified

In this section we have some great women’s backpacks for women with a capacity between 40 – 50 liters. A few might bit tiny enough for carry-on, but most will struggle to fit in the tester!

Osprey Fairview 40

The Osprey Fairview backpack is a specifically designed travel backpack for women. It has ergonomically shaped backpack straps and a torso that’s shorter than the one on the men’s version ( Osprey Farpoint ).

Not only that, but it is available in three different sizes, and only the smallest backpack can be used as a carry-on.

This is  a front-loading backpack, with laptop and tablet sleeves inside the main packing area. It is similar to many other travel backpacks like the Tortuga Setout but obviously women-specific.

It is lightweight and built from really sturdy materials;  the exterior of the backpack is made from 210D Nylon which is water-resistant  even without any additional coating.

The  harness of this backpack is fully adjustable and stowable. This means you can put everything away if you have to check it in, which is a big plus.

The back panel and the harness are both padded and covered with breathable mesh for excellent ventilation. The LightWire Frame Suspension includes a strong peripheral frame that ensures your backpack never loses its shape, and that helps transfer the load of the pack away from your shoulders and onto your hips.

Of course, you will need to use the hip belt in order for that to be effective. But that shouldn’t be a problem, since t he hip belt is padded, ventilated, adjustable, and just really comfortable to wear. It ticks all the boxes!

The Fairview features multiple external mesh pockets and scratch-free pockets for sunglasses/smartphones.  That’s in addition to several internal pockets, all of which allow for easy organization.

See our full Fairview 40 review

  • Carry-on sized
  • Laptop and tablet sleeves
  • Backpanel and harness are padded and ventilated
  • A bit heavy due to frame
  • Dimensions: 21” x 14” x 9”
  • Weight: 3.16 lbs
  • Capacity: 40 liters

Cotopaxi Travel Backpack

The Cotopaxi Travel Backpack is a colorful backpack/travel bag hybrid. It’s made from very sturdy materials – water-resistant 600-denier repurposed nylon.

It is designed from the ground up to be a travel backpack with a clamshell opening like a suitcase. Not only that but there are three easy-to-open zippered compartments for simple packing. And, you can access the main compartment through a handy side pocket which we loved!

The backpack has padded and ventilated back panel and shoulder straps with load bearing to make it extra comfy to carry. The hip belt is also quite low slung making it easy to load on the hips instead of your back. However, there is no sternum strap included, which is a shame for such a potentially heavy pack.

Another handy travel feature is that you can tuck away the shoulder straps and turn this into a duffel/carry-on bag. They hide away behind the back panel making carrying with the shoulder strap easy peasy.

Another cool feature is the 15-inch laptop sleeve i n the back panel, along with a place for your tablet and accessories. We found it a shame that is the largest laptop it can fit given its size.

Yes, there are also a few other pockets like the side water bottle pockets, a well-sized top organizer pocket. And there are four handles to carry it when it’s all set for travel-mode.

All in all, a unique travel pack that ticks all the boxes for the ladies, including style!

Timbuk2 claims that this backpack is carry-on sized. However, with a height of 22.8”, not all airplanes will allow you to bring this inside the cabin. So, it’s going to depend on the carry-on size restrictions that individual airlines have. And a little bit on your luck.

There is no dedicated TSA-friendly laptop sleeve on this travel bag, and that’s one downside.

But,  you can easily fit a 15” laptop inside the Wander – as long as you have your own laptop sleeve, it should be pretty safe.  The main packing area of the bag is very spacious, and it opens up just like a duffel bag. It features a large zippered pocket and internal straps that will keep all your clothes in place.

The travel bag has  several pockets, for easy organization.  That includes  a dedicated shoe compartment that doubles as a wet pocket.  And there’s also a small compartment with an organizer panel, on the top of the backpack.

The Wander is equipped with external compression straps that help cinch in the backpack when it’s not at full capacity. And which can also help you reduce its size so that it’s more likely to be accepted as a carry-on.

  • Great packing options
  • Transforms into a duffle bag
  • Made from durable materials
  • Water-resistant
  • Heavy before you are packed
  • No TSA friendly laptop sleeve
  • Dimensions: 21.5 x 13 x 9 inches
  • Weight: 4 lbs. 3 oz.
  • Capacity: 42 liters

50+ liters (Large)

In this section, I will show you backpacks that have a capacity of a minimum of 50 liters. All of the backpacks you see here can fit enough clothes for at least a week of traveling, and some of them are a great option for backpacking.

Of course, if you are not a fan of carrying your large backpack around you might want to consider a wheeled backpack  instead!

Osprey Porter 46

The Porter 46  is a good choice if you want a medium-sized travel backpack. The 46-liter version is  too big to be a carry-on with most airlines, but some will actually accept it inside the cabin.  Be sure to check their requirements for in-cabin luggage, to avoid any surprises.

The backpack features HDPE Framesheet suspension, with thick padding on both the backpanel and the harness.  However, there’s no ventilation on the backpack –  the harness is stowable and the back is completely smooth ,  similar to the Fjallraven’s Travel Pack. The hip belt is padded though, and it is pretty comfortable to wear.

This is  a front-loading backpack – the cover of the main compartment unzips nearly all the way so that the entire packing area is exposed when you open up the backpack. This allows you to easily pack your backpack just like you would a single-compartment suitcase.

The Porter  is also equipped with  a front compartment with an organizer panel,  for all the items you would like to have easily accessible. And it features  a couple of external pockets,  for everything you don’t want to put in the main  packing area .

The Straightjacket compression allows you to tighten up the backpack when it’s not filled to capacity. And when you want to put it away, this really reduces the size of the backpack and the space it takes up.

The Porter pack also features a padded laptop sleeve all the way in the back, which will keep all your electronics safe. This pack is often  compared to the Osprey Farpoint/Fairview (mentioned above) and for good reason. They are similar and worthy travel companions. If you like Osprey, they are both a great buy.

See our full Osprey Porter review

  • Multiple compartments and lots of pockets
  • Comfortable hip belt
  • Dedicated laptop sleeve
  • A bit heavy
  • Backpanel and harness not ventilated
  • Dimensions: 23” x 15” x 13”
  • Weight: 3.40 lbs
  • Capacity: 46 liters

Gregory Mountain Products Tribute 40

Gregory Mountain Products Proxy 45 Liter Women's Travel Backpack

The Tribute 40 is a women’s backpack by Gregory Mountain Products – a high-end brand that makes travel and outdoor gear. They are known for making travel gear that is high quality, durable, and very well built.

This backpack is no exception; it is made from 100% water-resistant Nylon . The pack features  a women’s specific air mesh harness with a sternum strap , which stows into its own compartment for air travel. The  entire harness is easily adjustable , so you should be able to make this backpack fit your body perfectly.

The dimensions listed below are the dimensions of the backpack at full capacity. If you don’t fill it to the brim, you could reduce its size with the straps, and then you might even be allowed to bring it inside the cabin. There is also a Tribute 50L , and a Tribute 70 with daypack if you want it for check-in luggage.

The  main compartment of this pack opens up like a suitcase, for easy packing. It is very spacious and you can easily fit clothes for a week of travel inside it. It has not only space, but also a specific pocket for dirty clothes, and a zippered mesh panel for other stuff.

In addition to that, there is also a front compartment, which features an organizer panel (great for travel accessories and a tablet) and a padded laptop sleeve.

The sleeve can fit most 15.6” laptops,  and the panel below it features pockets for both your tablet and smartphone.

The Proxy also features  a zippered top pocket , for all items you would like to have easily accessible. And with the  lockable zippers, you don’t have to worry about the safety of your belongings.

  • Multiple compartments inside & out
  • Comfortable and adjustable harness
  • Very durable exterior
  • Rain/Travel cover included
  • Laptop sleeve is not TSA friendly
  • Too tall to be a carry on when packed
  • Dimensions: 22 x 12 x 11.5 inches

  • Capacity: 40 liters (50 & 70L available)

AmazonBasics Carry-On Travel Backpack

Amazon Basics Carry-On Travel Backpack - Navy Blue

The AmazonBasics backpack is a really great affordable option .  If you’re looking for a backpack with a large capacity but can’t afford to spend a lot of money, this is probably one of the best packs you could buy.

The best thing about it is that  it is carry-on sized, even with a capacity of 50 liters. And it is surprisingly well built, considering its price point. The backpanel and the shoulder straps feature thick padding and breathable mesh, for great carrying comfort.

The pack also  has a sternum strap and a hipbelt,  which help transfer its weight away from your shoulders and onto your hips.

The main compartment of this travel bag is very spacious, and it features two compression straps that will hold your stuff in place. There is also a large zippered pocket on the top cover of it that allows for some decent organization. Additionally, the  capacity of the bag is expandable,  which allows you to pack pretty much all you can carry.

When the AmazonBasics travel backpack is not at full capacity, you can always use the external compression straps to reduce its size and tighten it a bit.

And there is even  an organizer panel in the front compartment . It features  several slip pockets, including a couple of pen holders . That is in addition to the external zippered pocket, and the dedicated laptop sleeve.

The laptop compartment is unfortunately not TSA friendly, but it is all the way in the back. So, it will be pretty easy to take out your laptop – easier than packing it in the main compartment anyway.

  • Expandable capacity
  • Durability could be better (expect some loose threads)
  • Dimensions: 15” x 6.5” x 20.1”
  • Weight: 3.64 lbs
  • Capacity: 50 liters

Kelty Redwing 50

The Kelty Redwing is a unisex hiking backpack, and it’s one of the best affordable options out there. The backpack is available in two sizes – the 50 liters version that I will be talking about here, and a smaller 44-liter version . Neither of them is small enough to be expected as a carry-on travel backpack.

This is an amazing backpack because it is  very versatile . Even though it’s supposed to be a hiking backpack, its size and capacity actually make it an excellent travel companion. The  top-loading main packing area is very spacious  and can fit enough gear for a week or two of traveling (including all those travel accessories).

The Redwing features a Dynamic AirFlow back panel, with spaced-out foam ridges covered in breathable mesh . Because of that, both the comfort and ventilation you get out of this backpack will feel premium.

In addition to the spacious main compartment, this backpack also features a front compartment with an organizer panel . It’s great for all items you would like to have handy while you’re traveling, and there’s even space inside the compartment for your tablet.

The main packing area has a dual-use sleeve – it is designed for either a laptop or a hydration bladder. And there are lots of other pockets on this backpack – a quick stash pocket on the top of the pack, stretch side pockets, zippered side pockets, and a front stretch pocket. Additionally, there are several attachment points for any bulkier gear on the exterior of the backpack.

See our full Kelty Redwing 50 review .

  • Comfortable and ventilated backpanel
  • Very versatile backpack
  • Not available in carry on size
  • No hipbelt pockets
  • Dimensions: 26” x 16” x 12”
  • Weight: 3.69 lbs

Osprey Aura AG 65+

If you want  a really big pack for backpacking,   the Aura AG  is one of the best women’s specific hiking backpacks around . The AG in the name stands for anti Gravity – the technology of the harness and back panel. They are both covered with suspended air mesh, which makes the backpack remarkably breathable and very comfortable to wear.

The  entire harness is adjustable, so it should be rather easy to make this huge backpack fit you well. And considering how big it is, it’s actually pretty lightweight at only 4.26 lbs. Even the hip belt padding is adjustable on the Aura 65, and it can extend up to 6” for the best fit.

This is a top-loading hiking backpack, with a rather huge main compartment, and can easily fit enough clothes for a couple of weeks inside this beast. The backpack features  a floating pocket  –  the top lid can be removed and used as a daypack . There’s an integrated  FlapJacket cover, for lidless use of the pack.

This pack is designed for backpacking, so get features like a hydration sleeve, ice axe loops, and trekking pole attachment points. However, those are very versatile and you can use them however you like – the hydration sleeve can always double as a laptop sleeve.

The Aura AG features dual hip belt pockets, stretch side pockets, a stretch mesh pocket on the front, and dual zippered top lid pockets. All of this allows for  easy organization , which is very important with backpacks that are this big.

  • Best for long trips
  • Comfortable and ventilated suspensions system
  • Adjustable harness and backpanel
  • Not available in a smaller size
  • Dimensions: 31” x 15” x 16”
  • Weight: 4.26 lbs
  • Capacity: 65 liters

Thule Landmark Travel Pack

Thule Landmark 70L Women's Travel Pack, Dark Bordeaux

In case you’re looking for a really large backpack, the Thule Landmark is a good option.  It is  a women’s specific backpac k   with an overall capacity of 70 liters.  The Landmark actually  consists of two backpacks – the main backpack with 50 liters and the detachable day pack with a capacity of 20 liters.

The daypack will really come in handy if you’re going backpacking – it allows you to leave most of your luggage in the hotel room, and go exploring only with a small basic daypack on your shoulders.

The Landmark has  a comfortable and ventilated back panel and harness.  It features a  sternum strap and a hip belt, for your carrying comfort. And the s houlder harness is easily adjustable  – pretty important for a backpack this size.

Even though it’s pretty huge, it won’t be difficult to organize your belongings in it. For one thing, you have  two main compartments  to pack in. And then you also have  a ton of smaller pockets and other compartments. There’s the dedicated laptop sleeve, multiple internal pockets, a zippered side pocket, and a top pocket with an organizer panel and a key clip.

Another great feature of this backpack is that you can attach the daypack to the shoulder straps of the main pack, kangaroo-style. This makes takes some load off your back and is a little more secure when you’re walking through unknown cities.

Overall, if you’re in need of a really big pack for backpacking, the Landmark is without a doubt one of your best options.

  • Detachable daypack
  • Multiple pockets and compartments
  • Dimensions: 19.3” x 13” x 24.8”
  • Weight: 4.56 lbs
  • Capacity: 70 liters

Women’s Travel Backpacks Comparison Table

What to look for.

The following are some of the most important things you should look at when exploring all the travel backpacks for women. The exact things that are important are obviously specific to you, however, these should help you get started narrowing down your choice.

Women’s Vs. Unisex

Ladies, I’m sure you’re well aware by now just how many various companies try to take advantage of us by selling us “women-specific” products. Razors, shower gels, lotions, and so many other items tend to be more expensive for us than they are for men. Which is ridiculous.

But that’s not always the case. When it comes to these backpacks, there are certain palpable differences between the men’s and women’s versions.  The backpacks that are designed for women tend to be a couple of inches narrower and have a shorter torso.  The  shoulder straps are also shaped a bit differently, to better fit the contours and curves of a female body.

In addition to that,  the backpacks that I will show you here are priced exactly the same for both ladies and gents.  And that’s a huge bonus – and also a clear sign that they’re not trying to take advantage of you by selling you a pink version of the same thing for more money.

I will also show you some unisex backpacks – these don’t have any gender-specific features and are always thoroughly adjustable.  You can shorten the torso if you need, and tighten all the straps as much as it suits you.

So, if you really care about getting a backpack designed for women, check the mini-reviews to see whether it’s a lady’s version or a unisex pack.

Backpack Size And Capacity

Anything can be a travel backpack.  A good small daypack can easily be your favorite carry-on, and a large hiking backpack can be a great option for backpacking through Europe.  But I will mostly focus on showing you proper packs for travel – at least when it comes to the smaller sizes.

In general, women’s travel backpacks are usually medium in size. They are small enough that they can pass as carry-on luggage, and have just enough capacity for all your travel necessities. Most of them have at least a laptop sleeve, and some will even feature dedicated pockets for your tablet and smartphone.

If this is exactly what you are looking for, you will find several options in the first section of this review. There I will show you  smaller packs that are great for shorter trips, or just as carry-ons.  Some of the packs will have a women’s specific design, and others will be unisex.

And then  there are also big packs, with much larger capacities.  These backpacks are great for ladies that are ready to give up on their suitcases and carry all of their luggage on their back. Most of these packs are designed for backpacking, but some are also very versatile hiking backpacks.

These packs are great if you’re going away for a really long time and you need something large for all of your travel gear. But because they are not proper travel backpacks, I won’t focus on them too much.  You will find a couple of great options in the last section of the review.

Extra Features

There are a few other features you might care about, so be careful to check for those in each of the backpacks you like the looks of. Things like external mesh pockets (for drink bottles), organization pockets for all your travel accessories, a rain cover for carrying your stuff in wet weather, and perhaps whether the straps are stowable (which makes for easier travel).

Best Travel Backpacks For Women: The Top Options

Well, that was a lot of backpacks. And if you’re having a hard time choosing just one, you can just go for our top options. Here are three of the best travel backpack for women that we always include in our top travel tips newsletter.

Out of all the carry-on backpacks, I think that The North Face Router is easily your best option. It has a large capacity for a carry-on and  several different compartments and pockets that allow you to organize your stuff.

The laptop compartment is TSA-friendly , and it will help you breeze through checkpoints. And it is comfortable to wear, thanks to the  FlexVent suspension system and all the padding in the back panel and harness

If you need something a bit bigger, go for the Osprey Fairview . It’s a long-time favorite of travelers and for very good reasons. It is still carry-on sized with its 40-liter capacity, and it is made from very durable, water-resistant materials.

The pack has sleeves for both your tablet and laptop, in addition to  several pockets and a very spacious packing compartment.  And with the  peripheral frame and padded and ventilated back panel and harness , it feels very comfortable on your back.

Osprey Packs Fairview 40 Travel Backpack, Misty Grey, X-Small/Small

  • Large, lockable U-zip duffel-style access to main compartment - 40L total volume
  • Meets carry-on size restrictions for most airlines (Size X-Small/Small: 19.3H X 13.8W X 8D inches)

Maybe you’re looking for  a large backpack; something you can easily use for backpacking?  In that case, I suggest   the Thule Landmark .  The pack has  a total capacity of 70 liters, which is divided between the main pack and the detachable daypack .

The harness and the back panel are padded, ventilated, and adjustable  throughout, which promises great carrying comfort. Additionally,  both packs have loads of pockets and several compartments that allow for easy organization of your belongings.

  • An extended-travel adventure backpack with a women's-specific fit
  • SafeZone compartment protects a phone, sunglasses and small valuables

And those would be our top three picks for travel backpacks for women on any trip. But you can honestly grab any one of the packs in this review – all of them are rated very highly by happy travelers. Head over to Amazon to check out the prices of all the packs featured here.

In case you’re not really happy with the packs I showed you, check out our related posts. Maybe you’ll find the right backpack for you in one of them.

The Best Carry-On Travel Backpacks

A person standing outside in a light blue short sleeve shirt wears the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L backpack, in black with a gray llama-head logo and aqua accents.

By Kit Dillon

Kit Dillon is a writer focused on bags and travel gear. He has worked for Wirecutter for a decade and lost count of the number of bags he has tested.

When you open up your favorite carry-on travel backpack, it should feel like you’re opening the door to a well-organized closet or sitting down at a clean desk, with everything in the right place and easy to reach.

This is your moment to center yourself, no matter how chaotic the journey.

What we considered

A 45-liter bag maximizes overhead space but can get heavy when fully packed; 35-liter bags tend to be more manageable.

A bag with a clamshell design opens like a book and is the easiest to pack, but a bag that opens traditionally tends to have more structure.

Ideally, a travel backpack has handles on all sides—especially the bottom—so you can pull it out of overhead bins or from under seats.

Some internal pockets are useful, but major organizing is better managed with packing cubes.

The Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack and the larger Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L offer the best combination of features, quality, and durability. Both bags are exemplary carry-on travel backpacks that are designed for comfort, durability, and organization. Though these backpacks are great as companion bags for any trip, they’re designed to ultimately replace all of your other luggage and become your exclusive bag as you travel.

This style of packing is not for everyone, but once some people try it, they’re forever hooked. Finding the right bag is a personal choice, though, and no single bag will appeal to everyone. That’s why we also have picks that are great for people who travel for work , others that are designed to be carried over long distances , and a bag that’s basically luggage on your back .

The research

Why you should trust us, who this is for, best small carry-on bag for most situations: cotopaxi allpa 35l travel pack, best large bag for most situations: peak design travel backpack 45l, best mobile office: patagonia black hole mlc 45l, best bag for long journeys on foot: osprey farpoint 40 and fairview 40, best bag if you need a large suitcase on your back: tortuga travel backpack pro 40l, other good carry-on travel backpacks, how we picked and tested, the competition.

I’ve been covering aspects of luggage and travel bag design for Wirecutter for nearly a decade, and I have personally researched, tested, and compared hundreds of bags in that time. I personally try to do most of my travel with a single backpack, whenever possible. I spent nine months roaming around Hawaii with not much more than that, and I spent another six months nomadically couch-surfing in New York City.

I reached out to writers who specialize in traveling the world carrying everything they need in a single bag: Eytan Levy, the owner and operator of the Snarky Nomad travel website; James Feess, founder of The Savvy Backpacker ; and Sharon Gourlay, of the Where’s Sharon? travel website. I also spoke with moderators of Reddit’s r/onebag and r/heronebag forums, as well as with Chase Reeves, bag fanatic, reviewer, and owner of Matterful .

We researched and tested bags designed for those who want to travel light and stay flexible while flying, without the burden of checking luggage. For some people, the challenge of cutting down a packing list is intimidating. But if you can get past that initial hurdle, traveling with a single bag is a revelation. With fewer items, you have more time to concentrate on and appreciate the journey.

  • When you’re not loaded down by heavy luggage, it’s easy to remain more mobile. And it’s easier to adjust your plans mid-trip. If you’re willing to do laundry on the road, then one bag is all you need to travel indefinitely. At its heart, one-bag travel allows you to discover more—not just about the places you’re going but also about yourself and what you really need day to day.
  • Size and weight still matter. If you desire more creature comforts or more gear, or if you plan to be away for a long time across multiple climates, you’ll want a bigger travel backpack . These larger bags tend not to be carry-on-friendly, however, especially in Europe, so be prepared to check them.
  • No single backpack is perfect for everyone. Before you make any purchase, consider some basic points. How much can you carry? And where do you usually visit: the city or outback? Travel gear should feel like a welcome companion—there to support you when you need it but unobtrusive when you don’t.

45-liter bag vs. 35-liter bag

A graphic comparing the difference in capacity between a 45-liter and a 35-liter backpack.

Cotopaxi Allpa 35L

A versatile small pack for a week or a weekend.

This durable bag’s clamshell design makes it easy to organize your stuff. And due to its strap design, this bag can be worn on your back or carried in your hand while you’re on the move.

Buying Options

The Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack is an easy-to-organize, comfortable-to-carry bag for getaways lasting just a few days or a whole week.

It’s one bag that can do it all. This is a great all-around bag for any traveler who’s dedicated to packing light, or for a smaller person who wants less to carry. There are handles on all four sides of this bag, so it’s easy to grab no matter where you’ve stowed it. It’s also protected by a full lifetime warranty, and it has the build quality to back that up. After more than four years of testing, this single backpack (plus a personal item ) has replaced nearly every travel bag or piece of luggage I use.

It comes in various sizes, but we think the middle-of-the-road version is the best. Cotopaxi also makes the Allpa in 28-liter and 42-liter sizes. But for us, the 35-liter bag is the best option. At 42 liters, this bag becomes heavy for most people to carry when it is fully packed, and we’d prefer that it had a more-robust hip belt. At 28 liters, the bag becomes a touch small for most people, and its internal organization feels fussy for shorter trips, such as an overnight. Cotopaxi also makes a hip pack , which is designed to fit snugly into the Allpa bag’s front top compartment. It’s a neat little addition to the bag, and it is worth getting if you like wearing fanny packs while you travel.

It’s organized, easy to pack, and easy to carry. The Allpa bag has a clamshell design, so it opens like a hard-sided suitcase—a large YKK zipper runs around three sides of the bag, allowing it to fall open into two halves when unzipped. On the right side is a deep compartment, spacious enough for two large packing cubes or half a suitcase’s worth of clothing (which you access through a mesh zippered flap). On the left, there’s space for one more medium-size packing cube behind a zippered flap. Above that there are two smaller pockets with high-visibility backing—useful when you’re looking for hard-to-differentiate personal items.

The packed Cotopaxi Allpa Travel Pack, shown fully open so that the contents are accessible.

It’s secure but still accessible. The Allpa pack has two side-access zippers—great for on-the-go access, especially when the bag is hanging from your shoulder. One of these reveals a flat computer pocket with a padded false bottom; so if you drop the bag, it won’t land on the corner of your computer. The other reveals a “secret” pocket with a hidden zipper and access to the main compartment. All of the main compartment zippers are protected by security loops, which you thread the zipper through at the end of its run. This prevents anyone from subtly or quickly grabbing a zipper and opening your bag when you aren’t paying attention.

It’s comfortable to carry. The Allpa bag’s hip belt—which can be removed while the bag is on your back—is substantial enough that it’s comfortable to wear when you need it. With or without the hip belt, the Allpa bag is comfortable to carry over long distances. However, folks who have longer torsos (over 19 inches) may find that the waist belt sits a little high off the hips, unless you fully extend the shoulder straps. Speaking of shoulder straps, unlike the ones on our other picks, the Allpa bag’s straps are contoured to fit people who have large or small chests. It’s not a specifically gendered design, but our female tester noticed the improvement right away.

The Allpa pack is made with 1680-denier ballistic nylon, similar to the Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 . (Denier is a measure of a fabric’s fiber thickness.) It feels similar to a strong canvas, but it has a more prominent weave. This is the type of bag that’s as easy to toss into an overhead compartment as it is into the back of a rusty pickup truck. And it also includes a rainfly, which is unique in this category.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Though this pack is well organized for packing, it’s less ideal as a mobile office. The Allpa pack has a minimal amount of administrative organization—places to keep pens and papers, spaces to hold tickets, and so forth. This is where a good personal item comes in handy. However, if you want to travel with just this one bag, there are a few nooks you can hide things in. The front organizer is deep enough that you can also fit several small organizing pouches, if you want, or the aforementioned fanny pack.
  • We prefer the model without the TPU front. Cotopaxi does enjoy playing around with fabrics and colors. Sometimes the company has released the Allpa pack without the TPU-lined front panel. The TPU panel improves water resistance, but after many years of traveling with our bag, we’ve found that the TPU layering can begin to flake in spots.

Capacity: 35 liters Weight: 3 pounds 5 ounces Main compartment access: clamshell opening Style: adventurous Colors: assorted

A person stands by a wooden fence outdoors while wearing the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L, our larger pick for the best carry-on travel backpack.

Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L

An easily customizable large bag for long trips and expensive gear.

This bag was built with photographers in mind. Yet most travelers will appreciate its easy accessibility, clever tuck-away straps, and the elegant way the bag expands and contracts. The accessory cubes cost extra, though.

The Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L is a good choice for those carrying more expensive gear—especially camera gear. It’s also great for those who prefer a large, backpack-based packing system.

One bag provides many configurations. Some bags in this category are built to do one thing extremely well—be carried on your back. But the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L is built to adapt. It’s the Swiss Army knife of backpacks: adjustable, customizable, and (if you spring for the extra cubes and organizers) an almost perfect system for a photographer or gearhead on the move. Most bags’ expanding mechanisms aren’t worth the extra zipper they’re built on, and they look about as attractive as a boiled ham splitting out of its plastic packaging. That’s not the case with the Peak Design: This bag looks just as good fully packed at 45 liters as it does compressed to a 30-liter daypack.

It’s expandable, with clever folds and zippers. You can access the bag through a back panel (which doubles as a computer and tablet pouch) as well as a front one (if you unzip the pass-through divider). You can also get into the main compartment via two wing-like trapezoidal flaps, which run along each side of the pack. In its natural shape, the Travel Backpack holds 35 liters, but an expansion zipper lets the bag swell to 45 liters. If you want to use the bag as a daypack, you fold in the top corners and snap them down, reducing the bag’s volume to a slim 30 liters. In this configuration, it will still feel larger than a normal daypack, but we think that’s a small compromise for being able to use one backpack as both your travel bag and your daily explorer. The bag itself consists of 400-denier nylon and polyester fabrics. It feels tough but not as tough as some other bags we’ve tested, such as the Cotopaxi Allpa.

It has fold-away straps, for easier storage. The Peak Design lets you tuck its shoulder and hip straps away when you’re not using them. But unlike any other bag we’ve ever tested, this pack has magnetic flaps on the back panel that open and close with an almost magical snap. Once you’ve played with them, you’ll wonder why every backpack doesn’t have something similar. A small, childish part of me still gets excited about tucking away the straps when I put the Peak Design into an overhead bin. Although the straps are thin, they’re still comfortable. The hip belt isn’t quite as plush as the one on the Tortuga pack; still, even when the Peak Design is fully loaded, the belt doesn’t pinch or dig into the body.

It’s great for carrying expensive gear. If you travel with a camera, you don’t have to use Peak Design’s camera cubes , but they do make carrying that gear a whole lot easier. The cubes come in five sizes. And if they’re situated properly in the bag with the provided clips, they line up with the Travel Backpack’s side-access flaps for quick access. Caleigh Waldman (a photographer for this piece and, full disclosure, my spouse) took this bag across the country for a wedding shoot. “I want this backpack,” she said after three weeks of travel. “I want to travel with it everywhere. With my cameras. Without my cameras. It doesn’t matter. I want to travel with it.”

  • It’s expensive—especially if you commit to the entire system of packing and camera cubes.
  • More complexity means more things that can break. The adjustable design and multiple zippers do add complexity, and complexity adds potential weaknesses. Peak Design covers all of its bags with a lifetime warranty , which should alleviate most people’s concerns. But if you’re particularly hard on your gear and still need to carry as much as possible, you might consider the Tortuga bag instead.

Capacity: 45 liters Weight: 4½ pounds Main compartment access: back-panel loader Style: minimalist and unobtrusive Color: black, sage

The Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L, our also-great pick for the best carry-on travel backpack, is held in midair by a person wearing a plaid shirt.

Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L

Combines more organization with a simple interior.

This bag’s split interior makes organizing easy. Those who travel for work will appreciate this bag’s dedicated panels for organizing tech, books, papers, and assorted miscellaneous items.

If you travel often for business and prefer a bag that’s much easier to work out of than most of our other picks, you may like the Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L . This bag has a front panel and assorted pockets that make it feel like a small traveling office.

It’s built like luggage but organized like your office. Of all the bags we recommend, the MLC (short for Maximum Legal Carry) comes closest to being a suitcase on your back, due to its large size, simple interior, and minimal external features. The MLC is also one of the simplest bags we tested, divided into two leaves (imagine a book with only one page), with a main compartment for packing and a second compartment for document organization and tech storage. The MLC has a built-in laptop compartment that fits 17-inch laptops and is situated close to your back; this protects the computer and keeps its weight closer to your body.

Despite its size, it’s comfortable enough to carry. Most carry-on backpacks of this size, without frames, become somewhat unwieldy when fully packed. Thankfully, the Black Hole MLC bag, like the Cotopaxi Allpa, is a welcome exception to this rule. The MLC has two shoulder straps, a hip belt, and an optional shoulder strap, for easy carrying. When they're not in use, or when you’re checking your bag, all of the straps can be stowed away easily. When fully loaded, the bag was pleasant to carry—not as comfortable as the Peak Design or the Osprey, but decent enough. I wouldn’t want to carry it all day across a city, but I wouldn’t mind carrying it through an airport to a car and to a hotel.

It’s built from high-quality materials, with durability in mind. This pack is made from recycled polyester, and the fabric is woven in a cross-weave that’s very similar to what Patagonia uses in its long-lasting Black Hole series of duffle bags . This is a material I’ve come across a bunch with Patagonia gear, and I’ve tested it thoroughly; it’s very tough. The front of the bag is coated in a weather-resistant TPU, for extra protection from the elements. The bag has large YKK zippers (the industry leader) and smaller YKK zippers throughout. Unlike the Cotopaxi Allpa pack, the Black Hole MLC bag has no security loops.

It comes with one of the best repair programs and a lifetime warranty. Similar to our other picks, the MLC is backed by an excellent lifetime warranty , and we’ve always found that Patagonia’s repair program goes above and beyond other comparable companies.

  • We wish the Maximum Legal Carry (despite the name) came in a few more sizes. The 45-liter capacity may be intimidating for some people, and there is no alternative.

Capacity: 45 liters Weight: 3 pounds 10 ounces Main compartment access: clamshell Style: retro Colors: tan, black, olive, green

The Osprey Farpoint/ Fairview 40 Travel Pack, one of our also-great picks for the best carry-on travel backpack, shown in black.

Osprey Farpoint 40

For long distances on foot.

A great starter option for one-bag travel, this bag is easy to pack, adaptable to most situations, and sturdy enough to take with you as you travel the world.

lady travel backpack

Osprey Fairview 40

For long distances and smaller torsos.

A scaled-down version of the Farpoint, this bag has shoulder straps that are slightly lower, to keep the bag’s bulk more aligned with smaller torsos.

Updated in 2023, the Osprey Farpoint 40 and Fairview 40 packs are both built around a hiking backpack frame that’s easy to carry over long distances.

It’s built for travel but designed for hiking. The Farpoint 40 bag is well made, easy to pack, and comfortable to carry over most mid-length distances—such as walking across a city for an afternoon. (For simplicity’s sake, everything we say here about the Farpoint bag also applies to the Fairview bag.) Osprey makes excellent backpacks for hauling around, and its lifetime warranty is renowned within the industry . The Farpoint pack also has an optional messenger bag–style strap, which offers some flexibility when you’re maneuvering tight spaces like subways or crowded city centers.

View of the straps on the reverse of the Osprey travel backpack.

It’s simple to pack, but not as spacious as it seems. Opening the bag reveals a clamshell design; it’s deep enough to accommodate most large items, yet you won’t have to fumble awkwardly with zippers once it’s time to close up the bag. The feeling you get is not unlike when you’re packing a bit of sturdy luggage, and that’s something we love about bags like this one—especially when you use packing cubes . Osprey says this bag, when fully packed, can carry 40 liters. But after using the Farpoint bag for a few years, we’ve decided that its rounded shape seems to cut into that theoretical packable space more than other bags do. In practice, the Farpoint pack’s available space is closer to—but still less than—that of the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L .

It’s the easiest bag to carry among our picks. Like all Osprey bags, the Farpoint 40 has very comfortable shoulder straps. The years of design and consideration Osprey has put into its hiking backpacks are quite evident in the Farpoint 40. After more than seven years of long-term testing this bag, we’re still surprised by how great it feels to wear when fully packed. Crucially, the straps of the Farpoint 40 stow away neatly behind a zippered panel. However, when you’re using the shoulder straps, the design forces you to also use the hip straps. Though this isn’t a huge issue, if you prefer a sleeker look or would rather have the option of using shoulder straps without hip straps, the Cotopaxi Allpa pack is more flexible, and it lets you hide the waist straps while the bag is on your back.

The Fairview 40 has the same features, in a scaled-down size. The Farpoint 40 and the Fairview 40 packs basically have the same design, but the Fairview pack is made for someone with a more-diminutive torso. It’s also slightly lighter. However, it has the features and durability of the Farpoint bag. It also has the same hip belt and adjustability. On both, the chest-strap clip is also equipped with a small security whistle that’s surprisingly loud. It’s a handy feature for anyone traveling in unfamiliar environments.

  • For a smaller carry-on travel backpack, this one has little to not like. However, we do wish Osprey would trade some of the sleeker contours for a little more interior space.

Capacity: 35 liters Weight (Farpoint): 3 pounds 3 ounces Weight (Fairview): 3 pounds 2 ounces Main compartment access: front-panel loader Style: active Colors (Farpoint): green (Gopher), gray (Tunnel Vision), blue (Muted Space), black Colors (Fairview): blue (Winter Night), red (Zircon), blue (Night Jungle), black

The Tortuga Travel Backpack 40L, our also-great pick for the best carry-on travel backpack.

Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L

A suitcase to carry on your back.

For dedicated single-bag travelers, this water-resistant, durable bag is easy to pack and to travel with. And it’s comfortable to wear over endless miles—as long as you don’t mind the heavier weight.

The Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L maximizes packing space in a bag that’s durable, water-resistant, and customizable to fit most torso lengths (there’s also a 30L version ), with plenty of organizational features to suit any digital nomad.

It’s like a suitcase, with backpack straps. The Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L is built to occupy the maximum carry-on space available. It’s a nearly perfect blend of backpack and luggage. On the outside, its tear-resistant sailcloth and sealed zippers provide ample protection from sharp objects and the elements. Opening the main clamshell zipper reveals a cavernous interior and a few organizational features that make the bag a cinch to pack. The front panel is a particular standout, great for keeping track of electronics and chargers. Of all the bags we tested, the Tortuga strikes the closest balance between the carrying comfort of a hiking backpack and the space and organization of a piece of luggage.

The Tortuga Backpack Pro shown with the front clamshell lid in the open position.

It’s as easy to pack as luggage. When it comes to packing, the Tortuga pack has a soothingly minimal interior, as any good suitcase should. In addition to the bag’s cavernous main pocket, its interior lid has a large vented panel. The panel is too narrow to hold additional packing cubes, but it’s great for holding light jackets or doubling as a dirty-laundry bag (if you’re really committed to one-bag travel). The Tortuga is available as a 40-liter pack (the maximum space for a carry-on bag), which we tested; there is also a 30-liter version, which is compliant with some intra-European flights. The more-diminutive version is a decent choice for weekend travel or for minimalist travelers—but for those uses, we prefer the space-saving profile and extra internal organization of the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L bag.

It’s very customizable. The Tortuga pack is the most adjustable model we tested, thanks to its adjustable torso length, shoulder straps, and waist-belt system. The adjustable strap system lets you manipulate the location of the shoulder straps (video) to fit a wider variety of body sizes, in both the 30- and 40-liter versions. Of the packs we’ve tested, this one (with its included load-adjuster straps at the top, to prevent the bag’s weight from sagging toward your lumbar region) is the best at distributing its weight (4½ pounds when empty—roughly 1½ pounds more than most of our other picks, except the Peak Design ). The hip straps are removable if you need, but the shoulder straps are not stowable.

  • Its straps don’t stow away. Some people, especially those who are hard on their gear, may consider not being able to remove or stow the shoulder straps (as they can with our other picks, like the Cotopaxi Allpa ) a disqualifying factor. But after years of testing, traveling with, and occasionally checking our bag, we haven’t had an issue. However, if these mysteries beneath the airport also make you nervous, you might prefer our picks with easy-to-stow straps, such as the Peak Design.
  • It's heavy. We’ve fielded complaints from some testers who said that older models of this bag were too heavy for them to carry, even with the padded hip belt and adjustable straps. The additional padding does add weight. At 4½ pounds, this latest Tortuga bag is more than half a pound lighter than it used to be (the difference is noticeable), and it weighs the same as the equally large Peak Design pack. We are currently testing a new, lighter, and less-expensive version of this pack—aptly named the Travel Backpack Lite 40L —and will report back soon.  In the meantime, if you think you would struggle carrying the Tortuga, we strenuously encourage you to consider one of our more-manageable picks, like the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L.

Capacity: 40 liters Weight: 4½ pounds Main compartment access: clamshell opening Style: minimal, with a rigid construction Color: black

If you want to travel like a backpacker but also fit in at a board meeting (and you have the budget for it): Consider the Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 . This bag’s reputation for durability, adaptability, and a low-key aesthetic make it a favorite among many dedicated one-bag travelers. And after testing it, we think it’s a great bag too. That said, for the bag to really stand out against other backpacks—and to take full advantage of its carrying adaptability—you need to buy the internal frame , the hip belt , and (if you’re traveling with a suit or jacket) the shoulder strap . On a bag that already costs $330, all of this adds up. Everything about the Tom Bihn bag (the fabric, the zippers, the quality of construction) feels like an upgrade from other bags, but it’s simply too pricey, and its design is too rarified and specific for most people. The biggest flaw, from our perspective—apart from the price—is that the Tom Bihn bag lacks a dedicated laptop pocket. In its place, the company sells laptop sleeves (a fine version if you don’t have one) that clip into the bag’s central compartment. Not everyone needs a dedicated laptop pocket, but we prefer the more secure feeling of bags that do.

If you want a budget pick (but only when it’s on sale): The eBags Mother Lode Travel Backpack (our former budget pick) is still your best budget option, if you can catch it on sale for at least half off the list price. It’s not comfortable enough for trekking long distances on foot, but there are plenty of external pockets for organization, a laptop sleeve (which holds the weight of your computer high up on your shoulders), and an easy-to-access main compartment. This pack also has the largest capacity of any bags we tested, expanding to 65 liters—well beyond any airline’s regulated 45-liter limit. However, the bag’s casual-to-basic looks might not be to everyone’s taste. In 2024, eBags raised the price of the Mother Lode to $200. We have seen it on sale for $100, and in our opinion it’s worth getting only at the sale price.

We’ve narrowed our specifications for a great bag to the following list of features, ordered from most relevant to least:

  • Front- or back-panel loader or clamshell opening, for the main compartment: As with any good piece of luggage, with this type of bag, you should be able to open it and see everything you’ve packed. When you have a bag with a panel-loading or clamshell design—rather than a traditional, top-opening design—you can pack and unpack it just as you would a suitcase.

A graphic illustrating a clamshell bag opening

  • Backpack strap comfort and design: You never know when you’ll be walking farther with your bag than you’d intended. The more comfortable and well designed the straps are, the easier traveling will be. “Ideally, you want a bag’s shoulder straps to adjust to the angle of your shoulders,” said Eytan Levy of Snarky Nomad. “Good shoulder straps are the difference between an easy trip and a hard trip.”
  • Hip-belt comfort and design: A hip belt transfers heavy loads from your back and shoulders onto your hips, letting your legs—not your back—bear the brunt of the weight. Just having a waist belt is a plus, but having a padded and sculpted one—especially on bags with over 40 liters of volume—makes a world of difference.
  • Material quality: Durability is critical for any type of luggage, but especially for a backpack that will be your only bag. Most bags worth considering are made of nylon, which resists abrasion more than polyester fabrics of similar density. Spending more, however, can get you exotic, light, and strong materials, such as Dyneema or sailcloth.
  • Weight: Once the bags arrived, we weighed each one ourselves. Most of the bags weighed within a few pounds of one another. But unless you’re very strict with yourself, by the time you’re packed for a two-week journey, all bags are going to feel equally massive, even if one is just 2 pounds heavier than another when empty.
  • Stowable straps: These are nice to have, but they aren’t absolutely necessary. “The more often you need to check a bag, the more often you need to hide away the straps,” Levy said. “But if the straps are tough enough, it doesn’t matter.”
  • Accessory pocket layout and design: Some people will love an accessory pocket that has a specific space for everything; others may find that feature constricting and unadaptable. We prioritized bags with simple designs that guided our packing without constraining us.
  • Style: This is purely subjective. We preferred bags that had a minimalist exterior style, but not all of our picks will please everyone. Most of the people we spoke with, however, preferred not to stick out like a tourist wearing a large, colorful backpack, if they could avoid it.

During testing, we flew across the country with these bags, took weekend trips to nearby cities, lived out of them on extended trips, and tried them locally in our daily routines. We also packed and unpacked each bag, using a standardized set of weeklong travel necessities and accessories, to see how well the internal organizational features (or lack thereof) aided or got in the way of efficient packing.

This is not a comprehensive list of all of the carry-on travel backpacks we have tested. We have removed any models that have been discontinued or that no longer meet our criteria.

The Away Outdoor Convertible Backpack 45L is a rare miss from the Away team. This bag is resoundingly average for the price. Although it’s made from excellent materials, the bag is let down by its overall design, which lacks any kind of structure or attention to comfort. There are better options.

The cheap, no-frills Cabin Max Metz bag is intriguing for the price. Any bag at this price should almost be considered disposable. That said, if you need a simple bag that costs less than a seat upgrade, this might be the way to go—unless you can pick up the eBags Motherlode bag for under $100, which we think is a better deal at that price.

The GeniusPack Travel Backpack is the only model we came across that tried to fit a suit into a travel backpack. Though some people might need that, we think those who have to travel with a suit (or clothes that require pressing) would be better off with a piece of carry-on luggage . GeniusPack now offers a second version of this bag, but our conclusion hasn’t changed.

For certain people, the GoRuck GR3 is almost worth the cost. It’s strong and simple and covered by an iron-clad repair guarantee. The removable hip belt is comfortable to wear, and it’s good at displacing the weight of a 45-liter backpack. This is a decent bag. After testing it, however, we weren’t thrilled with the internal Velcro lining for compatible Velcro packing cubes. Velcro isn’t great: It wears out, it’s difficult to keep clean, and it clings to dirt. That might seem like a small thing, but for the price, this bag should feel perfect.

The Minaal Carry-On 2.0 was designed to be a backpack for business people. But if you’re carrying it for business, you’re probably wearing at least a blazer, so you wouldn’t use a backpack in any case. If you’re a business traveler who falls more on the casual end of the business-casual spectrum, and you’re not on a budget, this is a well-thought-out pack. But we think our picks are more versatile for world travel, and they come at a better price. Minaal has since introduced a 3.0 version of this bag ; our thoughts about it remain the same.

The Osprey Sojourn Porter 46L is a slightly larger sibling of the Farpoint pack. The Sojourn Porter bag is about 2 inches longer, and it pushes right up to most airline limits. If you don’t mind possibly having to check your bag at the last minute, this would be an excellent alternative to the Farpoint pack.

Best travel backpack for women.

June 9, 2023 by Joslyn Leave a Comment

TravelBackpacksForWomen

One of my very favorite things to do is travel. When I first started traveling I was not well equipped with quality travel bags or items to make traveling easier . In fact, I didn’t even have rolling luggage that was my own. I was notorious for “borrowing” my parents luggage and using my high school basketball bag as my carry on backpack. Thankfully, as I got older and started traveling more, I spent the necessary time researching the best rolling suitcase and asked for it as a Christmas gift. Once I received this new travel bag I realized that traveling (and packing to travel) could be so much easier and less time consuming. My next step was to find the best travel backpack for women so that I could move on from my high school basketball bag that I had been using for so many years.

Once I finally decided on and purchased a travel backpack, I realized all that I was missing out on. Many ask, “Does it really make that much of a difference?” In my opinion, it does. Having a backpack specific for travel makes my life so much easier during long travel days. I never have to go searching for my headphones or my passport again, since my travel backpack has a designated spot for each. After putting so much time into researching the best travel backpacks for women, I wanted to share my results so that others can experience the difference of having a quality (and stylish!) backpack made especially for women who travel.

My Favorite Travel Backpacks for Women

MATEIN Backpack

MATEIN Travel Laptop Backpack ($29.99)

Dimensions: 7.8 x 12 x 18 inches (Fits 15.6 inch laptop) Weight: 1.63 pounds Features: USB Charging Port, Spacious Compartments (including laptop pocket), Durable, Luggage Strap, Anti-Theft Pocket, Lightweight backpack, water resistant The MATEIN Travel Laptop Backpack is one of the top-rated travel backpacks on Amazon. This travel bag comes in at 4.7/5 stars from over 84,000 ratings. The MATEIN unisex backpack has many great components that are made for those who travel often. To start, the backpack is made of water resistant anti-scratch fabric that is extremely durable. This is important because when people travel they are often hard on their personal bags. I start to think about just one trip of mine, and how many times I am setting my backpack down in the airport (especially going through the TSA machines), on the airplanes, in trains, Ubers, in the hotels, etc. In just one day, my bag really does go through a beating. Thankfully, backpacks that are made of durable material and that have metal zippers can handle these tough trips. The MATEIN backpack is extremely lightweight compared to the other travel backpacks. It also has the capability to turn into a school or work backpack very easily. The MATEIN backpack features a built in USB Charger for a convenient way to charge your phone without having to find a plug in the airport or airplane. Pockets are very spacious in this backpack, including a main compartment that fits at least one change of clothes and a front zipper pocket that has a keyfob hook for your keys. It also features a padded laptop pocket to protect your laptop or tablet. One feature that this backpack does not have is a sternum strap, so if that is a non-negotiable for you then this bag would not fit the bill. In my opinion, this is the overall best travel backpack for women.

Taygeer Backpack

Taygeer Travel Backpack for Women ($29.89)

Dimensions: 7 x 11 x 17 inches Weight: 2.31 lbs Features: Hideaway padded shoulder straps, 180 degree zipper closure, Weekender Bag, Laptop Sleeve The TAYGEER travel backpack for women is my favorite weekend bag. Unlike the MATEIN bag mentioned above, this backpack has a large compartment that opens up like a carry on suitcase. The compartment is big enough for at least two days worth of lightweight clothes, shoes, and personal essential items. This function makes the TAYGEER backpack perfect or those who take short business trips and pack light. The TAYGEER stylish women’s travel backpack even features a wet bag to separate wet items from dry items, or dirty shoes that you don’t want touching your clothes. The shoulder straps have the ability to hide away and there is a luggage strap on the back to easily attach to your suitcase (if you have one with you). The front of this backpack has a laptop compartment that holds a 17inch laptop while also featuring 9 other pockets to organize your small items. The TAYGEER travel backpack is very comfortable to wear. This is due to its adjustable straps and fits in the overhead compartment and under the seats of the plane. This is a great backpack for women looking for a weekender bag.

COOWOZ Large Travel Backpack for Women ($36.99)

backpack

Dimensions: 17 x 31 x 42 inches Weight: 2.2 lbs Features: Shoe compartment design, wet bag, made from waterproof durable polyester, Laptop compartment

Coming in third on my list of the best travel backpack for women is the COOWOZ Large Carry on travel backpack . This bag comes in many different color options to choose from. The main pocket design is very spacious and includes a wet bag and a separate shoe compartment. The COOWOZ backpack is known for its breathable polyester that keeps you cool while you carry it and has many different zippered pocket options. It also comes with a sternum strap that you can clip across your chest for weight distribution. It also relieves pressure off of your shoulders. The COOWOZ has a USB charging port and a padded laptop sleeve that holds up to a 14 inch laptop. Unlike the previous two bags, this bag does not have any mesh water bottle pockets to hold your beverage. This missing feature could be a “game-changer” for some. Coming in at 2.2 pounds, this is definitely one of the bigger travel backpacks on my list of “The best travel backpacks for women.”

VenturePal Lightweight Hiking Backpack ($26.99)

VenturePalBackpack

Dimensions: 9 x 8.5 x 4 inches Weight: 0.7 lbs Features: Lightweight, foldable, large capacity, tear-resistant nylon material for travel gear The Venture Pal is one of the best hiking backpack(s) and best carry on backpack on the market. This versatile bag has 31,000 ratings on Amazon and holds an impressive 4.6/5 star rating. The Venture Pal is made of high-quality tear and water resistant fabric with heavy duty zippered pockets. Weighing in at only 1 pound, this travel backpack can fold into its own pocket for storage and easily unfold when you need it. This is one reason it is so highly rated and named one of the best carry on backpacks. The breathable mesh shoulder straps have a chest clip that helps with weight distribution to keep the bag steady. Although this hiking backpack is smaller than others on this list, it still holds 40L of storage and has zippered pockets to ensure you don’t lose your valuables. If you are in the search for a hybrid, lightweight carry on at an affordable price point, the Venture Pal is a great women’s travel backpack for you.

LOVEVOOK Stylish Travel Backpack ($44.98)

LOVEVOOK Backpack

Dimensions: 12 x 17 x 7.5 inches Weight: 1.7lb Features: Many color options, Stylish travel backpacks, USB Port, 4 compartments/17 pockets If you are on the hunt for a fashionable backpack that has ample storage space and a padded pocket for your laptop, the LOVEVOOK Stylish travel backpack is a great option. This sleek backpack can be used for many different purposes such as college, travel, business, and everyday use. Although it doesn’t have as many travel specific qualities as some of the other bags on this list, it is one of the best if you are looking for a stylish women’s travel backpack. The LOVEVOOK tote bag features convenient charging with a USB Port, padded shoulder straps, and 17 pockets for storage. The laptop compartment has a padded sleeve that protects a 17 inch computer. It also has an additional padded laptop sleeve that fits a 12.9 inch iPad. The exterior pockets on the LOVEVOOK backpack feature gold hardware that is sleek and classy. I would recommend this travel bag if you are looking for a multipurpose backpack with a classy design and ample storage compartments. This is truly one of the most stylish travel backpacks on the market.

VGCUB Large Women’s Backpack ($46.99)

lady travel backpack

Dimensions: 16 x 9 x 6 inches Weight: 2.92 lbs Features: Waterproof materials, Independent shoe storage space, sternum strap, anti theft backpack, padded straps The VCCUB travel backpack truly has it all. It is a larger bag that is heavier than its competitors. However, it is heavier for good reason! This flight approved ladies backpack is unique because it has an independent shoe storage pocket at the bottom of the bag, and even has holes for air circulation. The front of the travel backpack consists of a wet/dry bag to keep your items separated. The main compartment is the largest area that can hold your clothes and other personal belongings, and the back of the bag features a laptop pocket that is padded to keep your technology safe. The breathable shoulder straps make this water resistant travel backpack very comfortable to carry. The VCCUB has multiple external pockets, including a front zipper pocket and internal zipper pockets, and comes with a toiletry bag at no extra cost. Although this bag is heavier in weight and larger in size than other travel backpacks I have mentioned in this article, it is extremely versatile and one of the best women’s travel backpacks to buy in 2023.

Solo New York Re:Claim Backpack Made with Recycled Materials ($46.90)

lady travel backpack

Dimensions: 6.81 x 6.02 x 0.87 inches Weight: 1.45 lbs Features: Made from recycled PET bottles, water resistant, laptop bag, velcro carry handles The Solo New York re:claim backpack is an extremely structured bag that is very water resistant. This is the most environmentally friendly women’s travel backpack in this article. The Solo New York has padded shoulder straps and a velcro handle. It’s luggage trolley strap allows you to attach it to a rolling suitcase for convenience while you travel. The re:claim women’s travel backpack has a softly padded laptop compartment that protects your technology on-the-go. Although you can’t tell from the outside, the backpack does have multiple interior pockets to keep your essentials organized. If you are looking for a compact, environmentally friendly travel backpack, this would be the carry on that I choose.

Whether you are traveling out of the country or just visiting for a weekend, it is so helpful to have a great women’s backpack that holds your personal items and makes life easier on you. A few of my favorite features that many travel backpacks have and other bags don’t include a removable hip belt, laptop compartment, breathable shoulder straps, and wet/dry pockets. When I finally converted from an old basketball duffel bag to a travel backpack, I actually wanted to travel more because it made my life that much easier. I hope this article helped you find the best women’s backpack that you can take on your next adventure.

Every woman I know has her own unique traveling style, and an arsenal of bags to suit every occasion. Some prefer feature-packed backpacks to sleek rolling carry-on suitcases, and others never leave the city without a stylish weekender. Then there’s the dog parent who’s always on the lookout for the ultimate airline-approved pet carrier, the mom who needs practical pockets to toss everything and anything into, and the diva who loves to make a statement with a luxurious hatbox.

After road-testing and reviewing dozens of travel bags for ladies over the years, I’ve come to the conclusion that no matter how stylish or practical, no single piece will ever satisfy all my traveling needs, and neither will do yours. Of course, functional design, quality materials, and efficient, customizable packing space are paramount to a successful travel experience, but so are style and comfort.

Whether you’re a fashion-forward explorer or a pragmatic packer, you might want to check out my guide to the best travel bags for women – it’s full of wanderlust-worthy choices as unique and vibrant as you are.

BÉIS Weekender Bag

Best Weekender Bag for Women

Ladies, if what you’re seeking is a chic weekender bag with shoe compartment to take with you anywhere – from staycations and city breaks to road trips and beach escapes – you’ve found it!

Envisioned by actress Shay Mitchell, the BÉIS Weekender Bag is blissfully adaptable to your vacation needs and packed with features you’ll love, like the zip bottom compartment designed to keep your shoes and other travel essentials separate, or the smart back pocket, which converts into a trolley sleeve for easy navigation through the airport. Its spacious interior is lined with water-resistant fabric and filled with pockets, and the wide opening enables smooth access to the items inside.

The size, the looks, the price, everything about this tote just seems right!

Monos Carry-On Pro

Cute travel suitcase

The stylish looks, well-thought-out design, and smart details put this cabin case on top of our list of the best carry-on luggage.

Constructed with aerospace-grade polycarbonate, the Monos Carry-On Pro rolls on high-end Japanese 360° spinner wheels and sports an insanely practical padded front compartment for easy access to a 15″ laptop and other travel essentials.

Lined with soft 350D anti-microbial fabric, the interior includes a built-in compression pad for efficient packing, as well as complimentary laundry and shoe bags for keeping your items organized. A release button cleverly hidden underneath makes the multi-stage telescopic handle more natural to use, and the color-coordinated YKK reverse coil zippers add security while maintaining the case’s pristine appearance.

Oh, and did I mention that the outer shell colors range anywhere from sleek Desert Taupe to a limited-edition Terrazzo print that brings to mind ancient Venetian palaces?

Bric’s Firenze 22″ Cargo Duffle Bag

Favorite weekender bag for women

Although I’ve tested countless travel bags over the years, the Firenze 22″ Cargo Duffle holds a special place in my heart. Handcrafted with embossed, leather-like PVC and accented with vegetable-tanned leather trimmings, I’ve been absolutely in love with this bag since I first laid my hands on it. It’s chic and roomy, and the waterproof interior lining adds to its practicality. In its signature cream color, it stands out elegantly yet effortlessly, making it one of my all-time favorite weekender bags .

Bellroy Tokyo Tote

Travel tote

Say hello to your new favorite tote! Whether you’re headed to the beach or the office, this stylish, versatile carryall can do both.

Made with water-resistant recycled fabric and detailed with premium, environmentally certified leather details, the Bellroy Tokyo Tote is spacious enough for all your daily essentials. The interior is cleverly designed with a padded laptop sleeve for devices up to 13” and foldable pockets at each end to stash your shoes, umbrellas, or water bottles. An external zip pocket on the front allows for quick access to valuables such as phone and keys, and the strong shoulder straps with non-slip backing make it comfortable to carry all day long.

Paravel Grand Tour Duffle

Best travel bag for women

Made from 17 upcycled plastic water bottles, the Grand Tour Duffle is all at once practical, elegant, and eco-friendly. Built from Paravel’s signature Ecocraft Canvas and adorned with stylish eco-certified leather detailing and premium hardware, it’s as suitable for a quick fall escape in the Catskills as it is for an epic 7-day trip to Barcelona.

At 20″ × 10″ × 11″, the sophisticated duffel is roomy enough to handle extended trips without having to check it in at the airport, and could easily compete with any item in our best carry-on bags list. Two zip interior pockets and two roomy exterior pockets will keep your small essentials organized on the go, and there’s also a removable shoulder strap for easy carrying. Each lightweight getaway bag is protected by a silicone coating to prevent stains and increase durability.

Chic weekender bag for women

A timeless, feminine design makes Cuyana’s Triple Zipper Weekender a stylish pick for quick jaunts out of town. This chic weekender bag for women is handcrafted in Turkey from durable, textured native canvas and decked out with sleek gold metal hardware and top handles in premium Vachetta leather. A detachable leather crossbody strap facilitates carrying, and there’s also room for a few pairs of shoes in the large slip pockets inside.

Peak Design 35L Duffel

Travel duffle bag for women

If a tough, versatile duffel bag is what your heart desires, Peak Design has the perfect product for you. Wrapped in 100% recycled 400d nylon canvas and adorned with aluminum hardware, their Travel Duffel 35L is not only good-looking but also lightweight, weatherproof, and insanely practical.

What sets this bag apart from competitors is its smart design. With a wide opening main compartment for easy packing/unpacking and just the right amount of pockets inside and out, it fits in almost any situation. Conceived with comfort and portability in mind, it comes with a melange of straps – all padded and removable, allowing you to carry it by hand, over the shoulder, and even like a backpack when you need it.

Whether used as a duffel, overnighter, gym bag, or companion carry-on for longer trips, this cabin-sized carryall makes a wonderful addition to any luggage collection.

I’ve been using this bag for a couple of years on all kinds of trips, and it’s still one of my favorite pieces of luggage. A remarkably well-made duffel with spectacular storage space!

SteamLine Luggage Hunter Green Hatbox

Hat box

Made popular in the 19th century, hat boxes are having a comeback of sorts. Practical, feminine, and wonderfully decorative, they are among the most stylish and beautiful pieces of luggage.

An ideal accessory for traveling fashionistas, this vintage-inspired caddy from SteamLine Luggage keeps your hats pristine and your style intact while on the road.

Detailed with British brown leather straps and gold stud accents, the Hunter Green Hatbox sports the same lightweight, durable hard shell as the brand’s gorgeous Diplomat suitcases, and is fitted out with two elegant buckle clasps and an adjustable shoulder strap for hands-free carrying. The roomy, luxurious interior is fully lined and features a handy accessory pocket.

When not in use, the case makes a delightful home decor piece while storing all your favorite Trillbys and Fedoras.

RIMOWA Never Still Weekender

RIMOWA Weekender

Part of RIMOWA’s first-ever soft bag collection, the Never Still Weekender is refined, sophisticated, and sized just right so that you can carry it on a plane or take it on a short two-day trip.

Made in Italy using only premium materials, it sports the brand’s signature groove pattern in durable, water-repellent canvas and is accented with full-grain leather details for an extra touch of class. Inside, two spacious zipped compartments and a series of clever pockets accommodate everything needed for a short getaway or business trip, including your laptop and smartphone.

Pair all these with a removable shoulder strap, a convenient luggage sleeve, and a complimentary leather address tag, and Rimowa’s luxury weekender becomes a no-brainer investment for your stylish weekend escape.

Wild One Travel Carrier

Travel pet carrier

Traveling with your furry friends is never easy, let alone flying with them. The only thing that will smooth the ride, for both of you, is a really, really good pet carrier.

Designed with your companion’s well-being in mind, this soft-sided Travel Carrier from Wild One is not only airline-approved but also comfy, lightweight, and easy to move around.

Breathable mesh windows throughout allow for both ventilation and visibility, while the foldable interior cushion converts into a dog bed, keeping your furry friend cool & comfortable throughout the trip. Once you arrive at the destination, the carrier’s shoulder strap doubles as a leash.

Everlane ReNew Transit Weekender

Affordable travel bag for women

Although designed to go into any overhead compartment, Everlane’s ReNew Transit Weekender can fit more than you might think. Made from water-resistant recycled canvas, this dapper travel bag for women features handy water bottle holders, a padded laptop sleeve, plus one external zip pocket for grab-and-go essentials.

The simple, practical shape and minimalist design give the weekender bag a stylish, sporty touch. Its clean interior compartment is the perfect size for about two changes of clothes, an iPad, and other travel necessities, while the combination of top handles and an adjustable shoulder strap only adds to this piece’s versatility. If you want a great affordable weekender, look no further!

Dagne Dover Landon Carryall Bag

Crossbody travel bag for women

Ideal for gym trips, moms on the go, and all kinds of last-minute travel, this chic and lightweight neoprene travel bag features a spacious main compartment along with a tone of interior and exterior pockets, pouches, and sleeves for keeping smaller items organized, as well as a removable strap so you can also wear it as a crossbody when needed.

You have five different sizes to choose from, but the medium Landon Carryall Bag is ideal for short trips and overnight stays, and it also conveniently fits into the overhead bin of a plane when flying. On top of that, this crossbody travel bag for women is constructed from an innovative material (available in a variety of colors) that’s water-resistant, hand-washable, and shock-absorbent.

Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L

Travel Backpack

When you travel for a living, like I do, investing in versatile luggage is a must. Of course, you need a quality rolling suitcase for that big trip away or a stylish, practical duffel for weekends on the go, but most of all, you need a bag that adapts to as many situations as possible. That’s where the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L steps in.

Crafted from recycled weatherproof nylon canvas, this bag is exceptionally engineered to protect your gear, maximize storage space, and keep you organized on the road. Its quality is outstanding (think 400D weatherproof material, DWR-impregnated, PU-coated interior, and weatherproof, lockable zippers), and so is its versatility. In default 35L configuration, it meets most international carry-on standards, but it also folds down into a 35L daypack, perfect for urban escapes, and expands to haul 45 liters of gear comfortably when needed.

With its streamlined aesthetics, multiple access points, clever tucked-away straps, and endless carry options, it is by far one of the best backpacks for travel that I have ever used. And I used it a lot, either as a travel bag for my trips throughout Spain, a daypack for short hikes in the mountains, or as a carry-on bag on flights around Europe.

For added organizational convenience, Peak Design offers a variety of accessories designed to fit neatly within the backpack. These include camera cubes, packing cubes, and tech organizers, all of which are sold separately.

Besides being gloriously customizable, this durable multi-purpose bag is also loaded with separate compartments and thoughtful pockets inside and out.

As far as one-bag travel goes, I can’t think of a better piece of luggage for the job than the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L.

Monos Metro Duffel

Vegan leather travel bag for women

For all those situations where a wheeled suitcase is too much, you need a duffel with just the right balance of style and practicality.

And although there are tons of chic duffle bags to choose from these days, we’re partial to this beautiful, sustainable pick from Monos. Crafted in water-resistant vegan leather, the Metro Duffel ticks all the right boxes – good-looking, splendidly functional, and made to last.

At 17.5″ × 10.6″ × 9.6″, it’s compact enough to carry with your hand, yet roomy enough to fit a weekend’s worth of travel essentials. The interior is masterfully thought out to fit a 15” laptop and keep your items organized in pockets, while outside, a unique trolley sleeve designed to secure the bag to your suitcase handle converts into a roomy pocket when not in use.

Saving the best for last, the contemporary bag comes with the brand’s proprietary QuickSnap Modular Kit System, a sleek pouch that easily attaches (and detaches) to the exterior of any Monos duffel and backpack.

Samsonite Ascentra Wheeled Underseater

Small Underseater

Today is all about traveling in style, but also in comfort. With its functional design and subdued business-ready looks, the Ascentra Wheeled Underseater embodies both, making for a handsome, practical addition to your luggage collection.

Designed to fit under the seat of most airplanes, this bag may be small, but it packs a punch thanks to its brilliant organizational features. To name a few, there’s a removable padded sleeve for 15″ laptops or tablets, an integrated side pocket with USB cord pass-through and battery pouch for charging your devices on the go, and a removable mesh zipper pocket with attached WetPak which doubles as a divider panel for the main compartment.

The smooth oversized wheels and ergonomic trolley handle with multi-stop adjustments allow for effortless navigation, while the interior lining – made from 100% post-consumer recycled PET bottles – can be removed and washed for a fresh, clean trip every time.

Bellroy Weekender Plus

Functional bag by Bellroy

If both practicality and aesthetics are important to you, then look no further than the Bellroy Weekender Plus . Meant for the modern explorer, this brilliantly functional weekend bag by Bellroy is crafted from durable, water-resistant woven fabric and finished with environmentally certified leather accents for a chic, refined look.

Its casual, harmonious design will definitely complement many looks, and the spacious interior, which includes a padded laptop sleeve and a pair of pop pockets for shoes/water bottles, will ensure you can fit everything you need for a few days away.

And the bag’s clever features don’t stop here: an organizational ‘tool belt’ facilitates access by keeping internal pockets and zips at the same height, a spacious front zip pocket holds toiletries and travel documents, while a luggage pass-through slides over the handle of your wheeled suitcase for easy mobility.

Hook & Albert Women’s Nylon Twill Garment Weekender Bag

Women's Nylon Twill Garment Weekender Bag

If you’re looking to splurge, the Women’s Nylon Twill Garment Weekender Bag from Hook & Albert is totally worth the investment.

An excellent choice for traveling professionals, this practical, lightweight bag exudes subtle luxury and sports an ingenious garment section that accommodates long dresses and a pair of shoes in perfect condition. With a sliding shoulder strap designed for carrying comfort and zip exterior pockets for storing your accessories, it can easily pass as one of the best garment bags for travel .

At 20″ × 13″ × 9.5″, the smart duffel meets all major airline carry-on requirements, and, when not in use, folds flat for easy storage.

With its durable yet refined nylon exterior and premium gold hardware accents, this piece will add a touch of class to any trip, business or pleasure.

Ted Baker Alainie

The 14 Best Backpacks for Women of 2024 That Are Actually Chic

They’re nothing like what you wore in elementary school.

What to Keep in Mind

Your questions, answered, why shop with us.

The trusty backpack is a staple in everyone’s lives, whether you carry fond memories of a monogrammed Lands’ End backpack from fourth grade, you rely on a basic black option to schlep to and from work a few times a week, or you’re hauling gym bags back and forth from exercise classes. “Backpacks are unique in that they are a universally utilitarian product designed to be used by anyone ages two to 102,” says author and stylist Heather Newberger . While there are plenty of basic options out there for everyday use, Newberger says she looks for standout features such as unusual zipper pulls, and specific materials like quilted leather or neoprene that offer interesting textures. “Bonus points if it converts into a tote for happy hour,” she adds.

Our team of fashion editors scoured the latest drops and newest releases of popular bags to find the best, highest-performing backpacks, whether you need one for travel, work, hiking, or wherever else the day takes you. Strap in — these are the best backpacks for women, according to fashion editors.

Best Overall

Dagne dover dakota backpack.

Dagne Dover

What We Love: It fits literally everything.

What We Don’t Love: The neoprene material can crease if not taken care of properly.

Size: Medium

For a fits-everything, lasts-forever, comfortable-to-wear backpack, look no further than Dagne Dover’s Dakota backpack. The neoprene bag comes in three sizes — small, medium, and large — but for everyday use, we suggest the medium, which can hold everything from a pair of gym shoes (it has a dust bag to keep them separate!), a laptop, a water bottle, to all the various little items you carry with you, too. It even features a sleeve in the back to comfortably fit over your suitcase in case you plan to travel with it.

Even though it’s extremely durable, the neoprene can crease if not taken care of properly — meaning, never lay it flat or under anything heavy. If you wash it, only do so by hand and reshape it before letting it dry.

Dimensions: 5 (W) x 17 (H) x 11.5 (D) inches | Material: Neoprene, performance air mesh, recycled Repreve | Weight: 2 pounds | Capacity: Medium | Colors: 9 | Padded Straps: Yes

Best Splurge

Cuyana leather backpack.

What We Love: The chic design comes in two sizes to fit your laptop and includes safety features to keep your valuables protected on your commute. What We Don’t Love:  There aren’t many pockets.

You’ll feel like a true professional strolling into work wearing this refined leather backpack that would pair well with business-casual or more formal office attire. While many backpacks can be work-friendly, this Cuyana one is particularly work-appropriate thanks to its built-in safety features. Take its interior sleeve for your laptop, for instance. Choose between the 13-inch or the 16-inch, then rest easy that your laptop is protected against all the other items in your backpack that could damage it. (Keys are usually the culprit.) Another large slip pocket keeps your phone, wallet, and other valuables safe, too. The hook closure and magnetized flap also add another level of protection.

Dimensions: 9.6 (W) x 13.3 (H) x 7.2 (D) inches | Material: Leather | Weight: 1.75 pounds | Capacity: Medium | Colors: 3 | Padded Straps: No

Best Travel

Tah commuter backpack.

What We Love: Use this one as a backpack or a shoulder bag. Either way, this travel-friendly bag allows you to be hands-free.

What We Don’t Love: Be patient while you wait for your order to arrive — the bags are made to order.

Designer Alyson Eastman raves about the TAH Commuter Backpack, and it’s easy to see why. The full-grain leather bag easily transforms between a backpack and a shoulder bag with a convertible strap. Simply remove the adjustable strap from the solid brass circle rings to convert it to a shoulder bag. Voila! It has room for everything you need to fit in it — a laptop, phone, charger, too many lipsticks, you name it — as well as an outside pocket that fits all your must-haves that you need within close reach.

Eastman opted for the easy-to-style black, but it’s also available in a slew of other colors, including red, fuschia, navy, and blush. “I love to wear it with jeans and a white tee or a cute summer dress ,” she says. It’s the care that goes into each piece that she particularly loves though. “Everything is made locally in Portland, Oregon from beautiful leather,” Eastman says. “It’s made in small batches so it creates little to no waste.”

Dimensions: 12.5 (W)  x 12.5 (H) x 8 (D) inches | Material: Leather | Weight: Not listed | Capacity: Medium | Colors: 5 | Padded Straps: No

Best Leather

Parker clay drawstring backpack.

Parker Clay

What We Love: The luxe leather is equally lightweight and luxurious.

What We Don’t Love: The drawstring close could benefit from a magnetized feature to hold the flap down.

Size: Small

From the second you unwrap this backpack and get a good whiff of the sumptuous leather, there’s no denying how high-quality it is. Crafted from premium Ethiopian full-grain leather (and only leather, except for the brass rings and zipper pulls), it’ll last for years to come, only getting better with age. The fact that it’s a sophisticated shape that’ll always be in style? All the better.

This unlined backpack is on the petite side, and so lightweight you may forget you’re wearing it. You won’t fit a laptop in this backpack, but you will have plenty of room for your other everyday essentials like snacks for an easygoing hike or your phone and wallet to hit up happy hour. You don’t need us to tell you this, but we’ll remind you anyway: remember that leather is a natural material, so each individual backpack will vary slightly in tone, texture, and grain variations. Consider it one-of-a-kind.

Dimensions: 5.5 (W) x 13 (H) x 11.5 (D) inches | Material: Ethiopian full-grain leather | Weight: Not listed | Capacity: Small | Colors: 3 | Padded Straps: No

Best College

Stoney clover classic backpack.

Stoney Clover

What We Love: It blends fun and functional.

What We Don’t Love: The design could benefit from a few more interior pockets.

Be the talk of your college campus (or office) with this oh-so-fun backpack that is available in an array of standout colors. You don’t have to be nose-deep in a philosophy textbook to wear this backpack though. Clara Lago , Miami-based founder and CEO of resort wear brand pÍtusa , loves it too. “As a mom, I'm always looking for convenience, but as a designer, I also need my accessories to be fun and stylish,” she says. What’s not to like? It’s a comfortable price point (at least compared to other backpacks out there), comes in 25 radical colors, and its material is a breeze to take care of.

“It's made of nylon, so it's easy to clean,” says Lago. “And as I usually dress in vibrant colors in Miami, it's the perfect backpack to take with me to yoga class, the beach, or as my diaper bag for a playdate with my boys. It's super lightweight and I personally love the gold hardware.” One downside is there aren’t any interior pockets to keep items from colliding together, but the interior is spacious enough to store plenty of zippered bags.

Dimensions for Medium: 13.7 (W) x 16.5 (H) x 5.25 (D) inches | Material: Nylon | Weight: Not listed | Capacity: Medium | Colors: 15 | Padded Straps: Yes

Best Budget

Herschel classic backpack.

What We Love: It’s a timeless, durable backpack strong enough to take a beating and still look good through it all. What We Don’t Love: There’s no outside pocket for our water bottles.

We could carry the Herschel backpack on our shoulders with us at every stage of life — college, work, outdoor activities — and it would fit right into all of them. The backpack’s curved edges and flat bottom not only lend it a cool, egg-adjacent style, but it's convenient to tuck this ergonomic-shaped pack in narrow spaces like gym lockers and under airplane seats. Beyond that, its unique material makeup features a sturdy synthetic fabric constructed from recycled water bottles — score one for the environment — that cleans off easily and can take a lot of abuse without showing wear and tear. And, except for an outside water bottle pocket, it’s loaded with functional features like prusik zipper cords for easy access to the outside zipper pockets and a stitch line at the bottom of the interior laptop sleeve to protect devices when we carelessly shrug the pack off on a hard surface.

Dimensions: 12 (W) x 17 (H) x 6.5 (D) inches | Material: Recycled synthetic fabric | Weight: 1.43 lbs | Capacity: Medium | Colors: 10 | Padded Straps: Yes

Best Rainproof

Rains backpack.

What We Love: This waterproof backpack will stylishly spare all your belongings from getting soaked.

What We Don’t Love: The smooth material is distinctly raincoat-like and may feel odd to carry on sunny days.

If you live in a climate that constantly threatens to rain (looking at you, Pacific Northwest), it’s smart to invest in a rainproof backpack. There’s no one we’d trust more with rain gear than the Danish, including Denmark-based rain gear company RAINS. Known for its sleek yet utilitarian styles, Rains offers this rainproof backpack — simply called The Backpack — that will keep your items safe from Mother Nature.

It has everything you need: an internal laptop pocket, a hidden external phone pocket, and a spacious main compartment to stash your raincoat when the drizzle ends, all in a durable, waterproof fabric and oversized modern square shape. RAINS’ signature waterproof fabric is soft to the touch, lightweight, and available in five neutral colors, and two wild cards — a shocking cobalt blue and pistachio green — that’ll stand out under gray skies.

Dimensions: 11.8 (W) x 18.9 (H) x 4.7 (D) inches | Material: Polyester with polyurethane coating | Weight: 2 lbs | Capacity: Large | Colors: 7 | Padded Straps: No

Fjällräven Backpack

What We Love: It’s cute, compact, and available in dozens of colors.

What We Don’t Love: Colors can vary slightly from the online images.

Whether for a little kiddo or as a petite backpack for yourself, this one is a winner. It’s available in 37 colors — best of luck narrowing down a favorite — with long, adjustable shoulder straps. Every detail has been thoughtfully designed. Take, for instance, the main compartment, which has a large zipped opening, intended to make it easy to pack and unpack. Then there’s the included foam seat cushion, which is stored in the interior back pocket, preventing whatever poky items you stuff in there from digging into your back. It’s also created out of a weather-resistant vinylon fabric that can withstand dirt and moisture. Win-win.

Dimensions: 7.9 (W) x 11.4 (H) x 5.1 (D) inches | Material: Vinylon | Weight: 0.49 lbs | Capacity: Small | Colors: 37 | Padded Straps: No

Best Backpack Purse

Latico backpack crossbody.

What We Love: It’s a backpack and a crossbody and chic as can be. What We Don’t Love: The addition of a side pocket would be handy.

Small but mighty — that’s how you can describe both stylist Liv Schreiber and her favorite backpack, Latico’s Baxter design. It blends utilitarian with fashionable, with plenty of interior and exterior pockets that’ll organize all of your must-haves. Wear it as a backpack or switch the strap into crossbody mode. Either way, it’s a beautiful bag. “The best part,” Schreiber says, “is the padded, secure section for my laptop inside.” Other hidden features include four interior credit card slots and another section where Schreiber stuffs her sunglasses. “What you can’t see from a picture is the hidden magnetic snap pocket located behind the front pocket, perfect for tucking away my phone and sunnies,” she says.

Dimensions: 11 (W) x 13.5 (H) x x 4.5D) inches | Material: Leather | Weight: Not listed | Capacity: Medium | Colors: 4 | Padded Straps: No

Best Hiking

Rei co-op trail 25 pack.

What We Love: This backpack doesn’t sacrifice style when you’re out on the trails. What We Don’t Love: It only has one interior zipper pocket.

Size: XS–XL

The features checklist of a hiking backpack varies widely from the more fashion-forward categories on this list. It won’t have to coordinate with your happy hour outfit, for one. Still between its punchy-colored hues and non-bulky design, the REI Co-op Trail pack ensures you look good while you’re out enjoying nature.

Most importantly, however, its sturdy water-resistant nylon material withstands weather obstacles; the removable hip and chest belts fasten the pack securely to your back; and it’s sturdy and spacious enough to store everything you need. There’s only one zippered interior pocket, but we’d rather be able to easily reach and securely store everything we need in the abundance of exterior pockets, which there are plenty of, anyway.

Dimensions: 18 (W) x 13 (H) x 8 (D) inches | Material: Nylon, polyester | Weight: 1 pound, 13 ounces | Capacity: Large | Colors: 5 | Padded Straps: Yes

Best for Work

Hobo fern backpack.

What We Love: Quality leather and a slender silhouette give this backpack a professional look and it stores way more than you’d believe. What We Don’t Love: There are only two colorways.

The smooth, pebble leather Hobo Fern Backpack boasts a corporate look that seamlessly slips in with your most luxe work bags and has all the functional design details you need for a 9 to 5 too. Despite its slim silhouette, it features plenty of sneaky organizational facets like a small back opening for your phone and an exterior back zipper pocket. Plus, its interior is surprisingly roomy — you could comfortably fit a 13-inch laptop, water bottle, and several smaller bags inside and it remains structured and elegant looking. But, its design is far from the hum-drum corporate life. Though the brand only offers it in two colors, this backpack will stand among a sea of other neutral-toned carryalls between the half-moon-shaped foldover closure, delicate gold accents, and tassel accruements.

Dimensions:   11.5 (W) x 12.5 (H) x 4 (D) inches | Material: Leather | Weight: Not listed | Capacity: Medium | Colors: 2 | Padded Straps: No

Best Laptop

Tumi voyageur halsey backpack.

What We Love: Plenty of pockets line the inside and outside of this good-looking backpack to keep pesky wires and chargers organized.

What We Don’t Love: It can be difficult to adjust the straps.

From its shiny gold hardware to the leather-trimmed soft nylon fabric, the Tumi Voyageur may just be the sexiest way to store your tech. It makes an ace travel partner, too, because the protective leather padded sleeve fits a 15-inch laptop, there’s an easy-to-reach exterior phone pocket, and its open slip pocket allows you to place it over suitcase handles for hands-free movement. Plus, the smaller interior pockets expertly store chargers so you can easily reach for them without producing a tangled rat’s nest of cords.

The overall design is small and compact, down to the water-resistant bottle pocket placed thoughtfully on the inside of the pack to cut down on exterior bulk. And, it’s complete with the brand’s signature Tracer technology that assigns a special number to each pack, ensuring if you lose it you have a better chance it’ll make its way back to you. Considering all of the thoughtful details that you can incorporate into your daily life it makes the price more palatable — we only wish the straps were a little easier to adjust.

Dimensions: 11.5 (W) x 14.5 (H) X 5.5 (D) inches | Material: Nylon | Weight: 1.6 pounds | Capacity: Large | Colors: 1 | Padded Straps: Yes

Best Designer

Mansur gavriel soft lady bag.

Mansur Gavriel

What We Love: Finally, an everyday backpack that doesn’t come in only neutral colors.

What We Don’t Love: A zipper for extra security would be nice.

Affordable luxury brand Mansur Gavriel curried favor with fashion aficionados thanks to the unofficial repeat endorsements from Taylor Swift and Gigi Hadid. It remains in good faith with buyers (and us!) once they experience the supremely soft Italian leather and each bag’s durable, well-constructed design.

Like many of its handbags, The Soft Lady Bag backpack introduces a new shape to our everyday wardrobe, giving us a reprieve from our well-worn recycled silhouettes, and offers the bag in several saturated colorways, including a pleasant sky blue and deep forest green. Its drawstring closure further softens and adds femininity to the rounded silhouette. While it may not fit a laptop, you can neatly stow away an iPad and other smaller essentials into the gorgeous suede lining. Although we’re confident that the foldover closure keeps items inside secure, if you’re still worried about spillage you can tuck more valuable items into the small interior zipper pocket.

Dimensions: 11 (W) x 8 (H) x 3.5 (D) inches | Material: Leather | Weight: 1.45 lbs | Capacity: Small | Colors: 8 | Padded Straps: No

Best for Everyday Use

Graf lantz bedford merino wool felt backpack.

What We Love: The three-and-one design allows you to wear it whenever, wherever.

What We Don’t Love: It may be a tight squeeze to fit larger tech in here.

“I love this felted backpack for the feels, but also its versatility to act as both a backpack and a tote depending on where life takes you,” says Newberger. The removable and adjustable straps transform the carryall into a backpack, tote, or shoulder bag — hear, hear for innovation. She’s particularly fond of the smoky gray Charcoal color, but there are eight brilliantly bright, color-blocked, and neutral tones to choose from.

Additionally, its strong merino wool fabric not only adds interesting texture to the look, but it’s also surprisingly resilient and low-maintenance. Seriously, the fabric can withstand the everyday rough and tumble and then some, especially since it's specially treated to be odor, stain, and heat-resistant. And, depending on your laptop’s size you may be able to eek one in there — just be sure to double check dimensions if this is a dealbreaker.

Dimensions: 14 ( W) x 16 (H) x 4 (D) inches | Material: Leather  | Weight: Not listed | Capacity: Medium | Colors: 8 | Padded Straps: No

  • Storage: What good is a backpack if it doesn’t comfortably hold all your must-haves? (No good.) Keep a close eye on the dimensions of a backpack you’re considering clicking “add to cart” on, making sure that it’ll fit your laptop or whatever else you intend to carry. Bigger isn’t necessarily better, though. Instead, look for a backpack with a spacious main compartment that you can easily access — whether through a drawstring or a zipper — and several smart pockets, interior and exterior. That way you’ll never be digging around, swearing your phone is in here somewhere.
  • Material: The material not only sets the tone of a backpack’s style, but also how it’ll age. “Intentionality is the backbone of style, and you want a backpack that you can throw around,” says Newberger, who adds “I like leather in this instance because it’s durable, but also refined, and gets softer as it patinas.” However, if you’re buying a backpack for hiking or other activities, she suggests nylon, because it's easier to clean.
  • Fit: Comfort is everything when it comes to backpacks. Otherwise, the chances of you reaching for it on a day-to-day basis are slim to none. In general, a backpack should hit just above your hips, and the wider the straps, the more comfortable they’ll be. Adjustable straps are also key. They’ll help you get the closest fit to your back that doesn’t sway side to side, no matter what you’re wearing that day.

What makes a versatile backpack?

If you’ve ever lugged around a heavy-as-bricks purse, you and your sore shoulder know why a backpack might be a better option for carrying your essentials to work. Ultimately, a backpack offers better support than a purse since the weight is distributed more evenly across your shoulders and back.

The more you haul back and forth from work and home — a laptop, a packed lunch, and gym shoes, for starters — the more you should consider switching to a backpack. Your back will thank you. “ If I’m using a backpack, it’s likely because what I want to bring with me (wherever, whenever) is larger than my largest purse, so size is key,” says Newberger. “I always make sure my backpacks are larger than my laptops, and offer ample room for all the other things I’d like to bring with me or collect en route.”

Are backpacks professional?

Backpacks can read as professional, but you need to be thoughtful about their material and shape. In general, avoid slouchy looks and synthetic fabrics, like nylon, that can look too casual. Go upscale, with a leather backpack in a structured shape. That’ll pair perfectly with all of your favorite work outfits, from an oversized blazer with menswear-inspired trousers to a breezy sundress.
