Best Of Egypt - 5* Cruise
This trip was AMAZING!! It exceeded my expectations and was everything I could have asked for. What truly made it special was our guide, Ray! He was so knowledgeable and answered any questions we had. If we needed to get in contact with him, he was always reachable. The overall organization of the trip was very good. I liked how we started in Cairo, traveled down to Aswan and then made our way slowly back to Cairo. It was a lot of traveling and the first few days were a lot but it was totally worth it! My favorite part of the trip was The Valley of the Kings. We were there for a little over 2 hours and I feel like I could have been there for days. It was just so beautiful! I can confidentially say I saw the Best of Egypt! Overall I would recommend this tour & trip to anyone! HUGE shoutout to Ray for everything -- If you are looking to take this tour you should see if he can be your guide!

Nile Jewel - 5* Cruise
Mina was an incredible tour guide - so friendly and knowledgeable. He is such a kind hearted man who made our trip so special.
8 Days Pyramids and Nile Cruise Aswan - Abu simbel - Luxor - Hurghada
We had a wonderful time learning about ancient Egyptian history, connecting with other people in the group and with our tour guides Nur and Anas. Anas went above and beyond ensuring we were well taken care of and was a delightful person to be around. My favorite part of the tour was the balloon ride in Luxor, Komombo temple, and Hurghada.
Nile Adventure - Felucca cruise
Nile Adventure - Felucca cruise (An Remarkable Experience) - March 2024 Experience Our adventure through Egypt was nothing short of extraordinary, thanks to the impeccable planning and coordination by our exceptional tour guide, Remon (Timeless Tours). From the majestic Pyramids of Giza to the tranquil banks of the Nile River all through to the unique experience of Abou Simbel and the awe experience at the Luxor Temple, every moment of our adventure was meticulously crafted to provide us with an unforgettable experience steeped in history and culture. Remon's expertise and passion for Egyptology shone through at every turn, as he expertly guided us through the country's iconic landmarks, sharing captivating stories and insights that brought ancient legends to life before our eyes. Beyond his wealth of knowledge, Remon's genuine care and hospitality truly set our tour apart. His attention to detail ensured that every aspect of our journey, from accommodations to dining experiences, was seamless and enjoyable. His warm demeanour and unwavering dedication to our satisfaction made us feel not just like tourists, but like cherished guests, creating a sense of camaraderie and connection that made our time in Egypt truly unforgettable. Would I be returning to Egypt – 100 “yes”! So If anyone is seeking an immersive and enriching adventure in Egypt, this is adventure is recommended.
10 Day Egypt Experience Tour (Domestic flight)
Thanks to Ibrahim, our funny and informative tour guide! This tour is an amazing chance to discover the wonders along the Nile. You'll get to see lively bazaars, meet local families, and admire the ancient Egyptian pyramids and temples. It's a quick-paced journey that explores a lot in a short time. To get the most out of it, be ready with what you want to see at each stop.

8 Days Nile Jewel, Cairo & Nile Cruise (Superior Hotels)
In our tour group, there were four of us initially. We were joined by another group of four who were on the same tour but with an extension to Hurghada. Our travels took place during Ramadan, so we began early to avoid the heat and the early closures of tourist sites. The tour was a success, thanks to the excellent organization by the entire team, particularly our wonderful tour guide Bassem.
9 Days Nile Jewel (Cairo, Cruise, Hurghada) Superior hotels
Facilities were excellent. The tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly. Using foreign Wi-Fi can be tricky, get a local SIM card. Hotel taxis are expensive; try Uber instead.
Best of Egypt
Eating lunch with locals and learning about the culture. But just being in egypt and exploring how beautiful the country is, is so amazing!
Egypt: Boats & Bazaars
This trip was amazing - it had just the right amount of cultural and historical sightseeings, but also offered a great taste of the local culture (especially food!). I would definitely recommend this tour and, overall, Egypt. Mudi, our CEO, ensured we made the most from this unforgettable week.
Legends of Egypt
The knowledge of our Egyptologist was amazing. The sites have improved in the 17 years we were there. Our drivers were professional and courteous and the hotels were excellent. It has changed in that time but the history and grandeur of those ancient times still had us in wonder.
Egypt Adventure
This tour packs in a lot and is so reasonably priced. Our tour guide Mohamed Ebrahim was very educated about all the sites and went above and beyond for everyone on the tour including getting 3 of us that had birthdays that week a beautiful cake! If you can book a tour with Mohamed, you will be taken care of excellently!
Cairo and Nile Cruise Tours - Included Internal Flights
The tour went very well. As positive aspects, I would highlight the guides' knowledge of the history of Egypt. The accommodation in Cairo is very good, and on the Nile cruise, although it wasn't the most modern ship, it met expectations. The food on the cruise was very good, with a wide variety of products available each day. The only negative aspects are the absence of open wifi on the ship, available only at reception and for a fee, and the intensity of the tour. There were days when we arrived very late to see the temples, almost without any light. A shame.

Cairo-Luxor-Aswan-Abu Simbel 9 Days with tour guided - domestic Flight
We did our web research and selected Egypt Direct for the following reasons: 1. Dates were convenient 2. Pricing was more than excellent 3. Hotel was 4* and Nile Cruise category was 5* 4. Totally Guided Tour Post trip .. 5. Trip met our expectations, 6. They had a Guide and a Security to help the mini van and usher the group 7. The Van’s had water, drinks 8. Guides did not miss any location and adjusted with the situation. 9. Guides helped in taking some beautiful pictures 10. We were in Abu Simbel on Feb 22 and witnessed the unique solar alignment with the sun rays reaching the sanctum sanctorum and lighting the statues. This was amazing!
Egypt Nile Jewel
Medhat was great- saw everything and more.
What people love about Fully Guided Tours in Egypt
What a wonderful experience to be in Egypt . The guide was perfect and helpful
Husband & I enjoyed a 14 night trip to Hurghada & then a Nike Cruise. George was our cruise tour guide. We found him to be considerate & knowledgeable. He spoke excellent English & had a depth & breadth of knowledge on Egyptian history that only a person with a passion for their subject could have. George was an amazing guide & I would recommend him & the tour company 100%
A great tour. If you get Wael as your tour guide you are in luck. I have done tours around the world and he was one of the top guides I have ever had. The whole experience was well organized. The boat on the Nile was not great. The food on the boat was not great. The air conditioning was not great. But the bed was ok. I think the transport was great, but as I say Wael was the best tour guide. And he helped us with lots of stuff besides guiding. Currency exchange. Transport. He picked good hotels for us. I will use tour radar again. I was impressed!

The perks of solo travel in Egypt with Intrepid
Ready-made friends
Call us biased, but we think one of the best parts of travelling is making new memories with people who are just as hungry for adventure as you are. That's the beauty of a small group tour. There'll be plenty of time to do your own thing if you want to, but you'll always have someone to snap a photo of you with the Pyramids, grab a coffee or chat with on an overnight sleeper train from Cairo to Aswan.
A local leader
Egypt's history is that rich, it can be hard to know where to start. With a local leader by your side, you'll have an on-tour history expert ready to answer your burning questions and help you uncover the mysteries of the Pyramids, Sphinx and the Valley of the Kings. They'll also introduce you to locals, show you hidden spots that you won't find on Google and give you top-notch recommendations for your free time.
Egypt is generally a safe place to travel to, as long as you keep your wits about you and adhere to the status quo. Crime rates are low, but be aware of scam artists and pickpockets which can be common in busy souqs and tourist hotspots. Your local leader knows the areas and tourist traps to avoid, will get you from A to B smoothly and will let you know the do's and don'ts when it comes to local customs.
Logistics and convenience
Anxious about local bus rides or sleeper trains? Not sure about how to go about organising a felucca cruise (traditional Egyptian sailing boat)? No worries. When you travel with us, we'll take care of all the planning and logistics so you don't have to (there's enough admin to do in everyday life, right?). All you need to do is rock up – with your camera and a sense of adventure!

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip in egypt.
Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards
From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.
Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Will I have my own room?
It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organised on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.
For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.
On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.
How does group time work?
Whether you’re travelling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.
Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling in Egypt?
You sure do. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their tour. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Are Intrepid's Egypt trips accessible for travellers with disabilities??
Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. However, we’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Our solo travel safety guide
Share your itinerary.
Good advice for us all, but particularly for people travelling solo. Make copies of your itinerary, contact details, passport and travel insurance, then email them to yourself and to one or two friends/family at home. Check-in on social media when you can so people can keep track of where you are.
Remember the little things
If you’re arriving late in a city by yourself, book a hotel with a front desk or concierge service (many hotels also offer private transfers that don’t cost the earth from the airport or train station). If you're travelling with us, we can help you organise an arrival transfer. Read your maps before you head out for a walk (you can use a map app on your smartphone – or take screenshots of where you’re going if you don’t want to use up your precious data). If you need to check your map when you’re out and about, duck into a shop or café to do it. Leave the blingy jewellery, wedding rings and designer clothes at home, and aim to dress like the locals do – hit up the local markets if you haven’t packed the right outfits. Aim to keep track of travel times, so you’re not caught out after dark.
Roam if you want to
Most mobile/cell providers now offer travel passes to help manage your international roaming costs (which, let’s face it, are expensive!). For a few dollars a day, you’ll have access to data, which means you can log into your apps (like Skype, email and WhatsApp) when you’re out of WiFi zones and quickly get in touch with someone – a friend at home, someone in your group, or the police – if you need to. It might also be worth checking out the local cell/mobile providers as these can be quite cost effective.
Fare's fair
Solo travellers are way more likely to be ‘taken for a ride’ at the airport by unscrupulous taxi drivers, so do your research before you arrive. Make sure you get a cab from the airport/station taxi rank – if you’re not sure where to go, just head to the information desk for help. Touts tend to hang out in the arrivals area and promise cheaper rates, but can often be dodgy. When you get to the cab rank, ask the driver to use the meter or request a cost estimate before you hop in the car – if it’s way higher than it should be, pick another vehicle. A lot of airports have train stations attached as well, so consider public transport if you want to save a dollar or two.
Stick together
It’s one of the advantages of travelling solo on a group tour: safety in numbers. The big, 50-person bus groups stand out on the road, but a small Intrepid group of eight or nine people, with a local leader showing the way – including areas to avoid and getting around safely – won’t draw much attention. Plus, it’s a great way to see parts of the world you may feel uncomfortable exploring on your own. If you want to do things on your own, consider a day tour to familiarise yourself with a city and get to know the local way of life.
Trust your instincts
Solo travel is all about confidence. If you’re relaxed and self-assured on the street, you’re more likely to blend in. When you meet new people, don’t assume they’re all out to get you, but be sensible too and trust your gut. If it feels wrong, it probably is. Remember: the popular tourist areas are often the most well-lit and secure, but they’re often a juicier target for pickpockets and scammers. Just use your common sense; half of travel safety is simply being aware of your surroundings.

How to plan the ultimate adventure in Egypt, from Cairo to the Red Sea
Feluccas drifting down the River Nile, ancient wonders found in dusty temples, warm waters filled with tropical fish: Egypt remains one of the world’s most atmospheric destinations.
With millennia-old pyramids, hallowed temples and intricately painted tombs worthy of an art gallery, Egypt has a mindboggling amount of history on show. Some of the first threads of human civilisation started here over 5,000 years ago, and Egyptians still call their country umm al dunya — mother of the world.
Egypt offers the opportunity to time-travel like few other places. The past seems to keep careful watch over the present. The Pyramids of Giza — the last survivor of the original seven wonders of the ancient world — overlook cacophonous Cairo , the third-largest metropolis in Africa and the biggest in the Middle East. South along the River Nile, a temple built more than 3,400 years ago stands in the centre of the modern city of Luxor, which was once ancient Thebes.
The Nile flows through the hearts of most of Egypt’s major cities. This blue-green ribbon keeps the ever-encroaching biscuit-coloured desert at bay, coaxing lush plant life amid the Saharan sands. Fly in a hot-air balloon over the west bank of Luxor to see just how abruptly the desert reasserts its dominance over riverbanks lined with date palms and green grasses. Or travel like royalty, following in the footsteps of legendary pharaohs and their armies and merchants, on a scenic multi-day cruise along the Nile, making the temples and tombs between riverside Luxor and Aswan easily accessible.
( A practical guide to travelling in Egypt. )
Egypt’s extensive pharaonic history takes centre stage for most travellers, but even more adventure awaits on a different waterfront, to the east along the Red Sea in the Sinai Peninsula. The three Abrahamic faiths — Christianity, Islam and Judaism — put great credence in stories said to have unfolded in the mountains of the Sinai. Most famously, Moses is supposed to have received the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai, and listened to God at the burning bush, where he was instructed to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.
These high peaks make a stunning backdrop for surfacing snorkellers and for scuba divers returning from explorations of the Red Sea. Beneath the water’s surface, a bountiful aquarium of sea turtles, sharks and neon-bright fish dart around flourishing coral reefs that sprout along the sea floor and scale the vertical walls. Witnessing the wildlife of the Red Sea is one of the world’s great underwater experiences, and pairing it with a Nile cruise allows travellers to experience the broad range of Egyptian adventures.
Itinerary 1: The Nile Valley
Start point: Cairo End point: Abu Simbel Distance travelled: 725 miles Average length: 10 days
Herodotus, the 5th-century BCE Greek historian, famously called Egypt the ‘gift of the Nile’, but perhaps that description doesn’t go far enough. Egypt would be almost nothing without it. The river, the longest in the world, isn’t simply a watery artery stretching nearly 1,000 miles across the length of the country — it’s a genuine lifeline, and one of the world’s earliest civilisations wouldn’t have started here without its life-giving properties.
Ancient Egypt’s major temples and cities were located along the Nile’s fertile banks, called Kemet (‘the black land’) by its inhabitants. The fact that the river flows from south to north was key to the Egyptians’ worldview, with its focus on the daily journey of the sun between the horizons. The desert fringes on the Nile’s west bank — symbolically associated with the land of the dead — are where you’ll find most of the country’s tombs and pyramids. The ancient Egyptian idea of paradise, the ‘Field of Reeds’, was but a heavenly version of the real-life abundance of greenery along the Nile. Today, some 95% of Egyptians still live within a few miles of the water.
This itinerary, following the Nile’s course upriver on a boat cruise, has been travelled since the days of the pharaohs, and it remains the most popular way to explore Egypt, hitting all of the country’s major historic sites. To escape the crowds, slow down — linger longer in Luxor, dig deeper in Cairo and relax in Aswan. Egypt hides many more treasures beyond the Pyramids of Giza and the Valley of the Kings for travellers who take the time to seek them out.
Highlights along the Nile Valley
1. Cairo Dive into Egypt’s chaotic capital. The Pyramids of Giza are the stars of the show, and the nearby Grand Egyptian Museum will be a blockbuster when it finally opens. For now, marvel at the 20 royal mummies at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization and find the gold death mask of Tutankhamun, housed in the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square until the GEM is ready.
2. Luxor Take the train (around 10 hours, daytime or sleeper) to Luxor, built atop the ancient capital of Thebes. Big-hitters at this UNESCO site include the Luxor Temple and religious complex of Karnak, and the tombs of pharaohs in the Valley of the Kings outside town. Other nearby sites include the Ramesseum, whose giant statues inspired the poem ‘Ozymandias’, and the temple of the female pharaoh Hatshepsut.
3. Edfu Board a cruise boat in Luxor and spend the best part of the day sailing the Nile, with scenes of desert dunes and a shoreline punctuated with date palms unspooling outside your cabin. The standard first stop 70 miles upriver is Edfu, a tiny town with a well-preserved temple.
4. Kom Ombo The Nile crocodile takes centre stage at Kom Ombo, another 40 miles or around five hours’ sailing from Edfu. Half of the unique ‘double’ temple is dedicated to Sobek, the crocodile-headed god of pharaonic power and fertility, and an intriguing museum of mummified crocodiles awaits at the end of your visit.
5. Aswan All cruises dock at Aswan, after two nights on board en route from Luxor. The Nile is at its most fascinating here. Take a felucca (small sailboat) to Gharb Soheil, a brightly painted village home to a few thousand Nubians, an Indigenous group that has lived in the region since pharaonic times. For sunset, have a drink on the terrace of the Old Cataract Hotel , made famous by Agatha Christie, who wrote part of Death on the Nile here.
6. Abu Simbel Abu Simbel sits on the shore of Lake Nasser, created by the construction of the Aswan High Dam in 1970. The temples were rescued from rising waters by moving them stone by stone to higher ground. Twice a year, the sun still illuminates the figure of Ramses II and two of the three gods in the temple’s inner sanctum.
Itinerary 2: The Red Sea & Sinai
Start point: Sharm el-Sheikh End point: Nuweiba Distance travelled: 250 miles Average length: 7 days
Egypt’s best-known body of water is a river, but the Red Sea that stretches along the country’s eastern coast guarantees some thrilling aquatic adventures of its own. Suitable for all levels of underwater explorers, from snorkellers to advanced scuba divers, the Red Sea is a technicolour dream world beneath its surface. There are a huge number of endemic fish — including species of elegant highlighter-yellow butterflyfish, neon parrotfish and shy clownfish lingering in finger-like anemones — and thriving coral reefs.
Sprawling resorts have taken up much Red Sea real estate around Sharm el-Sheikh, but the development and crowds thin out as you travel north. Just a few miles inland from the coast, Sinai’s interior reaches for the sky, a sacred land of pilgrimage and revelations still lived in by long-established Bedouin tribes. Hiking trails climb to mountain summits and wind through valleys carved with centuries of graffiti left by visitors from the Nabataeans (of Petra fame) to the Crusaders, leading to secret wild swimming pools and small waterfalls.
This itinerary hits Egypt’s superlative highs and lows — from the country’s loftiest peaks to its deepest dive sites — as it traces the eastern edge of Sinai and traverses the peninsula’s biblically connected mountains.
Highlights on the Red Sea and Sinai
1. Sharm el-Sheikh When you need a break from sun, sand and snorkelling, Sharm has a couple of worthy distractions. The Sharm el-Sheikh Museum — the only such collection on the peninsula — has a digestible assortment of artefacts that span Egypt’s history from the pharaohs to the Bedouin. At the heart of the Old Market, which, despite its name, is quite new, the Sahaba Mosque looks like it could have come from the drawing board of Gaudí, with spiralling brick columns and honeycombed minarets.
2. Ras Mohamed National Park At the southernmost tip of Sinai, Egypt’s first national park is blessed with incredible dive sites. Vertical reef walls have names that hint at the types of species scuba divers and snorkellers can see: Jackfish Alley, Eel Garden, Shark Observatory and Anemone City. Divers with advanced certifications can check the shockingly large concentration of shipwrecks and the contents that have spilled out on the sea floor. Sleep in a canvas tent on the beach within the park boundaries at Bedouin-owned Bedawi Eco Camping .
3. Dahab A chilled hangout spot for a curious mix of nomadic types — of both the digital and Bedouin varieties — Dahab is Egypt’s most laid-back destination. Whitewashed cafes draped with colourful Bedouin-style rugs line the crescent-shaped bays, where flippered snorkellers waddle past remote workers clacking away on laptops. North of town, the Blue Hole is infamous for its underwater tunnel, the Arch, which has seen a number of fatalities over the years; it is a safe and popular spot for responsible snorkelling and diving outside of that.
4. St Catherine Sacred to Christians, Jews and Muslims, the UNESCO-listed area around St Catherine’s contains the world’s oldest continuously lived-in Christian monastery, watched over by majestic mountains that are some of the tallest in the country. No matter your religious beliefs, join a night-time pilgrimage, arriving to witness sunrise from the summit of Mt Sinai , or Jebel Musa (Mt Moses) in Arabic. Add on a day or more to walk with the local Jebeliya Bedouin through the neighbouring valleys that few outside visitors make time to see.
5. Nuweiba A small town with a laidback vibe and quiet golden beaches, one of Nuweiba’s main attractions is Dar Jan . A passion project by a couple who left the big smoke of Cairo, the nine-acre organic farm north of town is unlike elsewhere on the peninsula. Travellers can join creative workshops, including organic agriculture and outdoor survival skills, and spend artsy afternoons of pottery, meditation and mosaic-making. You can stay overnight, too.

6 Last-Minute Travel Tips for the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse
I n less than a month, people will look to the sky as the moon passes between the sun and the Earth in a celestial event known as a total solar eclipse . The phenomenon is set for April 8, 2024, and the next one that can be seen from contiguous United States will be August 2044 , so it's unsurprising that eclipse fever has gripped the nation. Between 1 and 4 million people are predicted to travel to the path of totality, joining the 31 million people already living within it.
Among the tours, cruises, hotels, and even scenic flights offering their own spin on the total solar eclipse experience, here are six tips that last-minute planners should keep in mind for the special day.
1. Figure out where you want to go
There are 13 U.S. states on the path of this year's eclipse: Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine (small parts of Tennessee and Michigan are also in the path). Among all of these states, totality will occur in two national parks-Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas and Cuyahoga National Park in Ohio-and they're expected to get crowded. Instead, consider one of the more than 100 state parks along the path, some of which are more off the radar. If you're more of a city dweller, you can also experience totality in big cities, including San Antonio, Austin, Cleveland, and Rochester.
Consider the weather, too. According to NOAA 's past weather records, April weather seems to bring more chances of rain-meaning more potential for cloud coverage-in the Northeast than in the South.
2. Consider the length of totality
Aiming for a destination in the path of totality is a no-brainer, although the amount of totality you'll get depends on where you go. The closer to the center of the path of totality an area is, the longer the total eclipse lasts. Take Austin and Dallas: While both are on the path of totality, Austin will get 1 minute and 46 seconds of totality, while Dallas will get 3 minutes and 52 seconds of totality. The longest duration you can get for totality is about 4 minutes and 30 seconds. Particularly traveler-friendly spots to maximize your time in the dark are Texas Hill Country towns like Kerrville (which will receive around 4 minutes and 24 seconds of totality and is partnering with NASA) and Fredericksburg (which is set to get 4 minutes 23 seconds of totality). Texas Hill Country is also one of AFAR's best places to go in 2024 .
3. Consider camping
If you want a solar eclipse experience surrounded by nature rather than people, camping may suit you better. But booking developed campgrounds at state parks and well-known nature spots will likely be difficult at this point. As an alternative, check for privately owned land through platforms like Hipcamp or look for dispersed camping sites in a national forest, like Ozark National Forest or Green Mountain National Forest . While backcountry spots may not have amenities, they can be perfect for those seeking solitude.
In addition, be sure to check the capacity of a park when it comes to handling the influx of visitors for April 8. As an example, Erie's tourism board is discouraging visits to Presque Isle State Park to prevent bottleneck traffic from its one entry and exit point.
4. Look into a town, festival, or last-minute tour
Plenty of places within the path of totality are putting their own spin on the solar eclipse with dedicated festivities. Get an educational experience at Rochester Museum & Science Center's ROC the Eclipse Festival , a three-day event that includes talks titled "Frontiers of Plasma Physics" and "The Search for Earth-Like Planets" from science experts. Or lean into grandeur at the four-day Texas Eclipse Festival in Burnet, Texas; its lineup includes music performances, yoga sessions, and immersive art experiences. (If you're heading to Texas for the eclipse event in general, check out this interactive map of special activities happening across the state.)
If the mere thought of navigating trip logistics brings a headache, check for the availability of some solar eclipse tours. Some tours still have availability, like Holland America Line's whopping 22-day Solar Eclipse cruise tour through North America. Others, like Travel Quest's Mexico's Copper Canyon Total Solar Eclipse tour , only have wait-list spots. But don't give up hope: As last-minute cancellations roll in, a quick call could secure you a place.
5. Try to get a last-minute spot at hotels in the path of totality
Hotels are leaning into the solar eclipse experience too, and properties are throwing celebrations and dedicated solar eclipse events just for the event. Miraval Austin Resort and Spa is hosting a viewing session with its astrologer, while Hôtel Swexan in Dallas is offering solar eclipse wellness activities on the evening of April 8 that includes meditation, a sound bath, and a Reiki healing session.
Keep in mind that a last-minute booking may cost a premium. Properties all across the band of totality are recording sky-high prices -even budget hotels . Similar to booking tours, do your due diligence and call to check for a cancellation.
6. Come prepared
Of course, you should wear solar eclipse glasses to prevent permanent damage to your eyes. If you're going to an event, check to see if they will be provided or if you'll need to bring your own. If you don't want to buy them, you can use household materials like cardboard to make your own pinhole projector , a contraption that allows you to see the sun change shape as the moon crosses in front of it.
In addition to bringing materials for the day of the event, anticipate what happens next. The length of totality is less than five minutes, but the traffic afterwards may disrupt your plans for hours. If you're coming from a crowded park or city, be on the safe side and come prepared with extra snacks and water.

Last-Minute Memorial Day Travel Deals
Book a dreamy weekend getaway for less with cheaper prices on flights and other vacation costs.
The unofficial kickoff to summer is almost here.
Technically, the season doesn’t start in the U.S. until June 20. But for most Americans, the sight of red, white and blue flags snapping in the breeze on Memorial Day marks the start of summer .

If you’re thinking about traveling over the three-day weekend , experts say it’s not too late to find travel deals.
Memorial Day flight deals
Christie Hudson, senior public relations manager for Expedia Group, says Memorial Day flights tend to cost about $50 less than flights around July 4.
Hudson suggests booking flights departing on the Thursday or Friday morning before Memorial Day (May 27) and returning on Sunday or Tuesday to avoid holiday crowds.
Travel agent Angela Hughes, CEO of Trips & Ships Luxury Travel agency, says flying midweek is a good way to save on airfare. “I also suggest packing light and doing carry-on only . You’ll save money, and you don’t have to worry about the airline losing your bag.”
Hudson says New York , Los Angeles and Miami are popular Memorial Day weekend destinations that have more affordable airfare. “Average ticket prices [are] under $500.”
Memorial Day weekend travel deals
Although accommodations are on the more expensive side during this time, some hotel brands offer deals specific for the long weekend .
ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER ADVERTISEMENT
Vacations by Marriott is promoting weekend trip packages for destinations around the world. Westgate Resorts has deals at several properties across the country, including in New York City, Orlando , Florida, and Williamsburg, Virginia. In addition to considering discounted rates, Hughes advises vacationers to compare perks at properties before booking to save money. “Look for free hotel amenities like free parking, free Wi-Fi or free breakfast. I also suggest being a member of hotel loyalty programs and maybe using your points.”
Memorial Day destinations for deals
Thinking of traveling outside the country? Hudson says Memorial Day weekend is a good time to visit Mexico and the Caribbean before temperatures get too hot. “Cancun is one of Expedia’s top destinations with average ticket prices under $500 for the long weekend.”
Holland America Line
Up to $200 onboard credit on select cruises
Before booking, make sure you research travel advisories issued by the U.S. Department of State. The agency may recommend reconsidering travel — or not traveling at all — to some places in Mexico and the Caribbean.
Travelers looking for an island getaway a little closer to home may want to consider a trip to Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket in Massachusetts, Hughes says. Both islands open for the season during the holiday weekend and offer a mix of luxury accommodations and affordable things to do. On Martha’s Vineyard, the 29th annual Vineyard Artisans Festivals are free and feature new artwork from island artists, plus demonstrations and activities for kids. In Nantucket, the free Memorial Day parade winds throughout the historic downtown and ends with a ceremony at Prospect Hill Cemetery.
Here are more destinations to consider to observe Memorial Day on a budget.
Museums and music in Fredericksburg, Texas
The National Museum of the Pacific War , a Smithsonian Affiliate, pays tribute to those who fought in Pacific Ocean battles during World War II ($24; $16 for people 65 and older; WWII veterans free). The on-site Memorial Courtyard and Japanese Garden of Peace are free to visit. You’re a 15-minute drive from the legendary country music community of Luckenbach, where you can hear live music for free and enjoy the casual (OK, ramshackle) surroundings.
Stay: The Comfort Inn and Suites is a pet-friendly hotel with an outdoor pool. Rooms start at $175. Also consider: Full Moon Inn Bed & Breakfast.
Sandy beaches and hula dancing in Honolulu
Although a trip to the island of O‘ahu is going to be on the pricier side, it’s free to enjoy the gorgeous beaches of Waikīkī . There’s a free hula show at the Kūhiō Beach area of Waikīkī every Tuesday and Saturday night.
No trip to O‘ahu is complete without a visit to Pearl Harbor National Memorial to pay your respects to fallen war heroes. Admission is free.
Stay: Prices are high in Hawai‘i , so Hughes recommends booking off the beach in Waikīkī to save money. The Vive Hotel is three blocks from the beach and includes breakfast, Wi-Fi and beach gear rental. Rates start at $252. Also consider: The Courtyard by Marriott Waikiki Beach.
Free fireworks on a Great Lake in Chicago
The Windy City has museums, memorials and attractions to celebrate America’s military. Navy Pier, opened in 1916 as Municipal Pier, was renamed in 1927 to honor naval veterans of World War I and served as a training center for the Navy during World War II.
Chicago has a series of beautiful beaches along Lake Michigan. Or take an architectural boat tour on the Chicago River to see the city’s skyline. For a true taste of the town , try a Chicago hot dog (a beef dog with mustard, onions, relish, a pickle spear, sport peppers, tomato and celery salt; no ketchup allowed).
Chicago’s free annual summer fireworks series begins May 25. Head to Navy Pier and the lakefront early to get a spot to see the show.
Stay: The Whitehall Hotel is part of the Best Western Premier Collection and half a block from shops and restaurants on Michigan Avenue. Rates start at $202. Also consider: Hotel Versey Days Inn by Wyndham.

Israeli offensive in rafah targets egypt border crossing after hamas tried to change terms of cease-fire.

Israel launched an offensive into the final Hamas stronghold of Rafah on Monday — and a major target appeared to be the key border crossing with Egypt — the only way in or out of the Gaza Strip that Israel does not control.
The assault on the southern city — where more than 1 million Palestinians have taken refuge from war elsewhere in the territory — came after Hamas made a last-ditch ploy for a cease-fire.
However, Hamas changed the language in the deal — allowing the terror group to count the bodies of dead hostages among the 33 Israelis they had agreed to turn over in exchange for a temporary stop to the fighting, according to Israel’s public broadcaster KAN TV.
Hamas made major headlines when it said it approved a cease-fire deal Monday afternoon. But the Hamas deal had major differences from previous iterations put forward my Israel.
In addition, Hamas continued to demand an end to the war, which has been a non-starter for Israel as it has vowed to eradicate the terror group.
Israel’s ground offensive launched shortly after the Jewish state called out and rejected the Hamas cease-fire proposal as nothing more than deception.
A Palestinian security official and Egyptian official both said Israeli tanks had entered the southern Gaza city and were as close as 250 yards from the crossing.
The IDF wants to control the Palestinian side of the crossing to review any aid flowing into Gaza, a source with direct knowledge told Axios’ Barak Ravid.
Israeli leaders believe that by taking over the crucial Rafah crossing, it will greatly damage Hamas’ claim that it is still ruling Gaza, the source added.
The world’s eyes are now trained on Rafah. President Biden told the Israelis the US would not support a military operation there.
“The president was consistent again this morning that we don’t support ground operations in Rafah,” White House national security spokesman John Kirby told reporters prior to the advancement.
As the IDF entered Rafah, Hamas said it fired rockets at the Israeli city of Sderot, Nir Am and other areas near the Gazan border.
The IDF confirmed that the missiles were intercepted by the Iron Dome defense system, with one home damaged by falling shrapnel from the attack.
The announcement came shortly after Israel’s war cabinet unanimously voted to proceed with the attack on Hamas’ final stronghold in an effort to apply military pressure on the terror group, “with the goal of making progress on freeing the hostages and the other war aims,” Netanyahu’s office said.
The prime minister also slammed Hamas’ latest truce officer as “far from Israel’s obligatory demands.”
Following Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh’s announcement that the terror group had accepted a cease-fire deal, Israeli officials told multiple outlets that the deal presented to the terror group was a “softened” version of what was really on the table and is not being taken seriously by Jerusalem.
One official told Reuters that the announcement was a clear ruse by the terror group to create backlash against Israel for refusing a deal, and officials told public broadcaster KAN TV that the announcement of a cease-fire agreement was a “Hamas deception.”
Hamas’ announcement triggered celebrations across Gaza, where Palestinians cheered and chanted “Allahu Akbar” in the streets — though the celebration was short-lived.
Despite criticizing Hamas’ move, Netanyahu’s office said Israel is still sending a negotiation team to Cairo “to exhaust the possibility of achieving an agreement on terms that are acceptable to Israel.”
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres echoed the need for negotiations and called on Israel and Hamas “to go the extra mile needed to make an agreement come true and stop the present suffering.”
Hamas’ announcement triggered celebrations across Gaza, where Palestinians cheered and chanted “Allahu Akbar” in the streets.
But as the Rafah offensive began, families and supporters of the hostages in Gaza began demonstrating outside Netanyahu’s home accusing the prime minister of putting the war above the hostages’ lives.
“Bibi is abandoning the hostages!” the demonstrators shouted, according to The Times of Israel.
Israel has repeatedly rejected any cease-fire deal that calls for an end to the war, with Netanyahu saying that the conflict will only end once Hamas has been eradicated and Gaza proves to no longer be a threat to the Jewish State.
Thousands of Palestinians are fleeing parts of Rafah after Israel issued warnings it was planning to start military action.
Prior to the Israeli military’s attack on Hamas position in Gaza, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk warned that a battle in southern Gaza’s most populous city would quickly become a humanitarian nightmare.
“Gazans continue to be hit with bombs, disease, and even famine. And today, they have been told that they must relocate yet again as Israeli military operations into Rafah scale up,” Volker Turk said in a statement.
“This is inhumane,” he added. “It runs contrary to the basic principles of international humanitarian and human rights laws, which have the effective protection of civilians as their overriding concern.”
IDF spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said the more than 100,000 Palestinians who were told to flee eastern Rafah on Monday were instructed to stay in humanitarian zones for the rest of the night, while others were told to run to Al-Mawasi or Khan Younis.
“There they will receive a full humanitarian response, where water, food, medical equipment and shelter will be provided,” Hagari said in a statement.
Netanyahu has agreed to keep the Kerem Shalom crossing open to allow humanitarian aid to go through after closing the passage over the weekend following Hamas’ attack.

10 Things You Should Never Wear on a Plane — and What We're Replacing Them With From $6
Shop comfy sneakers, cozy layers, and more essential items to best prepare you for your next flight.
People / Madison Woiten
Packing for a trip is stressful enough, but choosing the right outfit to wear on the plane is a land mine for potential mistakes that can throw your flight into flux. No matter if you’re dressing for comfort or style , there are quite a few no-no’s of air travel that should be avoided in order to ensure a smooth trip — but don’t worry, we’re here to help.
No matter how long your flight is or where you’re headed, we’ve outlined the 10 most common fashion mistakes that travelers make and the easy swaps to try along the way. From trading in open-toed shoes for a more sensible option to always having a cozy layer on hand , here’s how to ace your next flight with Amazon essentials starting at just $6.
Don't Wear: Open-toe Shoes
Wear this instead: comfy walking sneakers.
Leaving your toes exposed during a flight is not ideal. After all, sandals lack support and warmth, plus it’s unlikely that the floor of the plane has been cleaned in a while. These supportive Puma sneakers are an excellent alternative because not only will they get plenty of wear on vacation, but they also keep your feet insulated and protected. Plus, they’re on sale for 30 percent off at Amazon right now.
Don't Wear: Pajamas
Wear this instead: a versatile loungewear set.
You may be tempted to wear pajamas to maximize comfort, but when you’re traveling you want to make the most of your wardrobe — and anything you wear on a plane, you shouldn’t also wear into your clean sheets. A cozy alternative is this stylish two-piece set that can be styled in multiple ways throughout your trip, all while keeping you as comfy on your next long-haul flight. The half-zip sweatshirt is a great layer to easily take on and off during your travels, while the drawstring pants are the picture of sleek loungewear. Not to mention, it’s available in 21 gorgeous colors, like hot pink and green .
Don’t Wear: Your Engagement Ring
Wear this instead: an affordable alternative.
From theft to loss, there are too many things that can go wrong when wearing your engagement or wedding ring while traveling. With that in mind, it’s worth picking up a simple band that won’t draw attention to your jewelry, like this basic tungsten ring that’s only $17. The material is scratch-resistant, hypoallergenic, and comfy to wear, while coming in a wide range of sizes to fit all travelers.
Don’t Wear: Fragrance Deodorant
Wear this instead: unscented deodorant.
When you’re spending an extended amount of time in an enclosed space such as an airplane, there’s an unspoken rule to avoid strong scents such as perfume or deodorant to keep you (and other people on your flight that may be sensitive to smells) comfortable. This long-lasting, natural deodorant from Native offers an impressive 72 hours of odor control, plus it’s aluminum- and baking soda-free. You can still feel as fresh as the moment you left your house once you de-plane, just without the overwhelming traditional deodorant scent.
Don’t Wear: an Open-top Purse
Wear this instead: a zippered bag.
The chaos of boarding the plane and getting settled leaves far too many opportunities for your purse to spill over, so it’s not advisable to travel with an open-top tote that can’t safely be stowed under your seat. Instead, try investing in a zippered, anti-theft purse that will serve you well throughout the duration of your travels, all while keeping your belongings safe and secure from takeoff to landing. This shopper-loved option from Travelon is fitted with several reliable zippered pockets alongside an RFID-blocking pocket, providing peace of mind in the form of a wearable and sleek bag. The adjustable crossbody strap and convenient magentic snap flap are just icing on the cake.
Don’t Wear: Ankle Socks
Wear this instead: compression socks.
Inflammation and swelling are incredibly common during air travel, and if you often find yourself struggling with discomfort, you’ll benefit from swapping traditional ankle socks for a pair of these best-selling compression socks . Made from a high-quality spandex blend, these socks are lightweight and breathable, promoting healthy circulation in your legs for lessened fatigue and swelling during your trip. In fact, flight attendants have even called them “perfect” for air travel.
Don’t Wear: Stiff Denim or Trousers
Wear this instead: slacks with an elastic waistband.
There’s nothing wrong with wanting to look your best on a flight. However, you’ll never regret prioritizing your comfort during longer trips, and these elastic waistband trousers are the perfect alternative to traditional denim. Still effortlessly stylish without digging into your skin, these flowy, cropped pants feature deep pockets, a trendy crop, and they’re made from 100 percent cotton. Did we mention they’re just $30 at Amazon?
Don’t Wear: Claw Clips
Wear this instead: a soft scrunchie.
Ever tried getting comfortable against a headrest while wearing a claw clip? Well, if you haven’t yet, we certainly don’t recommend starting now. Claw clips may be stylish, but they’re not the most comfortable headwear to sport on a plane. Instead, pick up a pack of these satin scrunchies that keep your locks healthy and luscious without causing creasing or breakage. At just $8 for a pack of five, the scrunchies are just under $2 apiece.
Don’t Wear: a Tank Top
Wear this instead: a comfy layer.
Even if you’re headed to a warm weather destination, make sure to pack an extra layer. Airplane cabin temperature is notoriously fickle, quickly oscillating from hot to cold, so don’t forget to keep a cozy cardigan tucked into your carry-on suitcase. We like this sleek open-front cardigan that’s currently 54 percent off thanks to an on-site coupon. The cardigan is equipped with deep pockets and has a breathable, airy design that’s practically made for traveling.
Don’t Wear: an Underwire Bra
Wear this instead: a bralette or sports bra.
Longhaul flights are tedious enough, why make them worse by wearing an underwire bra that’s guaranteed to dig into your skin throughout the entire duration of the trip? Of course that doesn’t mean that you have to entirely forego support, and this Hanes seamless bralette is a far more comfortable choice. The breathable, ribbed material keeps you cool regardless of the temperature on your flight, and the smooth and supportive fit will immediately have you trading in your underwire bras. Best of all, it’s even available in sizes ranging from XS to 2XL, with a major discount bringing the price down to just $6.

CIA director may travel to Israel for more cease-fire and hostage negotiations
CIA Director William Burns may travel to Israel for more cease-fire and hostage release talks after holding discussions on Sunday in the Qatari capital, Doha, a source with knowledge of the matter told NBC News.
Burns, whose schedule remained fluid amid uncertainty over the outcome of the talks, has emerged as a key figure in the negotiations. The CIA director had previously been in Cairo, where Hamas stated that cease-fire discussions concluded Sunday following “in-depth and serious discussions.”
The militant group reiterated key demands that Israel again rejected. After earlier signs of progress, the outlook appeared to dim as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to resist international pressure to halt the war.
Israel closed its main crossing point for delivering badly needed humanitarian aid for Gaza after Hamas attacked it. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant claimed Hamas wasn’t serious about a deal and warned of “a powerful operation in the very near future in Rafah and other places across all of Gaza .”
Early Monday, the Israeli military urged civilians in eastern Rafah to evacuate. The southernmost Gaza city, on the border with Egypt, is where more than half of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents now seek shelter from Israeli attacks.
Follow live updates here.
Israel didn’t send a delegation to the talks mediated by Egypt and Qatar. Egyptian state media reported that the Hamas delegation went for discussions in Qatar, where the group has a political office, and will return to Cairo for further negotiations on Tuesday.
A senior Arab negotiator directly involved in the talks with Israel and the United States said that the negotiations are not over and have not collapsed.
Separately, an Israeli official said that Burns' presence in the region was an indication that there are still ongoing discussions. Burns was in the Qatari capital Doha for talks on the subject yesterday.
However, another threat to talks came as Israel ordered the local offices of Qatar’s Al Jazeera satellite news network to close , accusing it of broadcasting anti-Israel incitement. The ban did not appear to affect the channel’s operations in Gaza or the West Bank.
Netanyahu, under pressure from hard-liners in his government, continued to lower expectations for a cease-fire deal, calling the key Hamas demands “extreme” — including the withdrawal of Israel forces from Gaza and an end to the war. That would equal surrender after the Hamas attack on Oct. 7 that triggered the fighting, he said.
Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh said in a statement earlier that the militant group was serious and positive about the negotiations and that stopping Israeli aggression in Gaza is the main priority.
But Israel’s government again vowed to press on with a military operation in Rafah, a key entry point for aid.
Kerem Shalom , now closed, is another. The Israeli military reported 10 projectiles were launched at the crossing in southern Israel and said its fighter jets later struck the source. Hamas said it had been targeting Israeli soldiers in the area. Israel’s Channel 12 TV channel said 10 people were wounded, three seriously. It was unclear how long the crossing would be closed.
The head of the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees, Philippe Lazzarini, called for an independent investigation and “accountability for the blatant disregard of humanitarian workers.” He also said Israel this week denied him entry to Gaza for a second time.
The closing of Kerem Shalom came shortly after the head of the U.N. World Food Program asserted there was a “full-blown famine” in devastated northern Gaza, one of the most prominent warnings yet about the toll of restrictions on food and other aid entering the territory. The comments were not a formal famine declaration.
In expanded remarks as the full NBC News interview was released Sunday, WFP chief Cindy McCain said famine was “moving its way south” in Gaza and that Israel’s efforts to allow in more aid were not enough. “We need more ability to be able to get more trucks in,” she said. “We have right now a mass on the outside border, about enough trucks and enough food for 1.1 million people for about three months. We need to get that in.”
Gaza’s vast humanitarian needs put further pressure on the pursuit of a cease-fire . The proposal that Egyptian mediators had put to Hamas sets out a three-stage process that would bring an immediate six-week cease-fire and partial release of Israeli hostages taken in the Oct. 7 attack, and it would include some sort of Israeli pullout. The initial stage would last for 40 days. Hamas would start by releasing female civilian hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
Netanyahu claimed that Israel has shown willingness to make concessions but said it “will continue fighting until all of its objectives are achieved.” That includes the stated aim of crushing Hamas. Israel says it must target Rafah to strike remaining fighters there despite warnings from the U.S. and others about the danger to civilians.
An Israeli strike Sunday on the al-Attar family house in an urban refugee camp near Rafah killed four children, including a baby, and two adults, according to Abu Youssef al-Najjar Hospital.
In a fiery speech for Israel’s annual Holocaust memorial day , Netanyahu added: “I say to the leaders of the world, no amount of pressure, no decision by any international forum will stop Israel from defending itself. If Israel is forced to stand alone, Israel will stand alone.”
The Hamas cross-border attack on Oct. 7 killed 1,200 people, and 250 others were taken hostage. Israel says militants still hold around 100 hostages and the remains of more than 30 others. Netanyahu is under growing pressure from some hostages’ families to make a deal to end the war and get hostages freed.
Israeli’s air and ground offensive has killed over 34,500 people, according to Palestinian health officials, who don’t differentiate between civilians and combatants but say women and children make up a majority of those killed.
Israel blames Hamas for civilian deaths, accusing it of embedding in residential and public areas. The Israeli military says it has killed 13,000 militants, without providing evidence to back up the claim.
