Most browsers today have variants for desktop and mobile devices alike. A single browser can perform well on one platform and not so well on another, so we’ll see which one is the best browser for Android.

Since the advent of smartphones, web browsers are no longer just for desktop computers. Browsers usually come in multiple forms, with apps for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS and sometimes Linux. In this article, we’ll take a look at five browsers and see which is the best browser for Android.

Key Takeaways:

  • The best web browsers can differ in features and quality in various formats.
  • Good Android web browsers should have device sync to keep browsing data between your desktop computer and Android phone consistent.
  • Puffin is both the most secure and the fastest browser for Android.

We’ll evaluate each browser with our usual set of criteria — features, ease of use, speed, privacy and security — but we’ll focus on just the Android version of each. Not all browsers are created equal, as the same browser can excel on one platform and fall short on another.

Out of these five Android browsers, we believe Puffin is the best Android browser. Its innovative “streaming” security model puts its security far ahead of all other browsers, and it’s the fastest Android browser as well. Vivaldi is our all-time favorite browser and earned a spot on this list, but it’s not as well adapted to Android as it is for desktop computers.

Fresh rewrite; removed Tenta, added Vivaldi, added Microsoft Edge to honorable mentions, and updated new features in Puffin.

What Makes the Best Browser for Android Phones & Tablets?

Naturally, good Android browsers need to be available for Android, which means Safari and Internet Explorer are already disqualified.

Next, we need to evaluate the browser’s suite of features. Device sync is one of the most important features for Android browsers so that users can transfer bookmarks, browsing history, settings and other browser data between devices.

Performance is another major consideration, and so are privacy and security. Strong privacy features keep your data from being collected by third parties or the browser developer itself. Security pertains to the browser’s defenses against external threats like malware and phishing.

  • Puffin — The fastest and most secure Android browser
  • Brave — A fast and private browser with built-in ad blocking
  • Vivaldi — A feature-rich browser that’s great for power users
  • Firefox — Easy to use, private and fast
  • Chrome — User-friendly; comes with Android devices by default

The 5 Best Android Browsers

We put Puffin at the top of the list for having the best security and speed. Brave and Firefox are good runners-up for privacy and security as well. Vivaldi was selected for its customizability and features, and Google Chrome is Android’s default browser.

puffin-android

  • Innovative security model
  • Fastest Android browser
  • Desktop app requires subscription
  • Ads on free mobile version

Puffin’s Android variant is a major advancement from its desktop browser. Puffin is the best all-around web browser for security, but its desktop version suffers from slow speeds and a lack of features. Fortunately, that’s where the Android browser makes a major improvement.

Puffin for Android is significantly faster than its desktop counterpart, and the fastest web browser on this list. It’s already a fast browser with its default settings, but it also includes a data saver mode that compresses web pages and frees up bandwidth for faster speed. There are sliders in the settings menu for adjusting exactly how much you want to compress images and streaming quality.

Puffin gained extra points from us by recently adding a sync feature. Its ranking suffered in past reviews for not having one, but now Puffin for Android is catching up to its feature-rich competitors.

Cloud-Based Security

Puffin’s claim to fame is its innovative security model. All web pages are loaded on the company’s servers and “streamed” to the user’s device. That means malware will never make it to your device if you navigate to a malicious website. The usual criteria for browser security is irrelevant here, which would involve things like safe browsing databases and script blocking.

Puffin for Android is a major step up from Puffin for desktop. There’s a lot to cover on this one-of-a-kind browser, so we suggest reading our full Puffin review .

brave mobile

  • Built-in ad-blocker & tracking protection
  • Privacy-based ads
  • Infrequent updates

Brave is a Chromium-based browser with a focus on privacy that frequently makes our “best of” lists. Brave includes a built-in blocker for ads, trackers, device fingerprinting and other privacy-violating practices common on the web. It’s uniformly fast in all of its versions too.

Brave’s sync feature is noteworthy for relying on one-time QR codes instead of an account. That means none of your synced data is associated with your identity, and it’s a simpler method of synchronization too. Brave used to only allow you to sync bookmarks, but now you can sync settings, history, open tabs, extensions and other kinds of browser data.

Built-In Privacy Controls

Brave was designed to be a privacy browser from the beginning. Brave’s ad blocker and pop-up blocker are enabled by default, and it also blocks trackers, device fingerprinting, scripts and cross-site cookies. It offers varying levels of severity for blocking privacy-violating behavior, ranging from moderate blocking to aggressive blocking. The latter can cause some websites to malfunction.

brave browser shields

Privacy is Brave’s specialty, but it ranks highly in all categories of our criteria. Check out our full Brave review for a closer look at this well-regarded privacy browser.

Vivaldi android version

  • Great for power users
  • Customizable
  • User interface is somewhat awkward on mobile

Vivaldi was created with enough built-in features to reduce the need for installing extensions. Its Android variant is no exception to this rule, as it contains a variety of useful tools that can be mixed and matched to your exact preferences.

The Android version is lacking many of the advanced features of the desktop version, but it still includes a wide range of tools and settings.

The Web Browser for Power Users

Vivaldi for Android includes a tab bar at the top of the page — which is unusual for most mobile browsers — and allows you to stack tabs within a single window. There is also a separate panel for taking notes, which are included alongside your bookmarks and search history.

Device sync comes in handy for such a customizable browser. Logging in with your Vivaldi account enables the synchronization of data across devices, including tabs. It can take time to get your personal customization just right, so it’s helpful to keep the same setup on both desktop and Android.

The abundance of customizable features is also its drawback for Android. The interface can get easily crowded with multiple tabs and windows and become awkward to use, whereas its interface is more manageable on a larger desktop monitor. It’s not a deal-breaker, but it’s less than ideal.

vivaldi tab stacking

This is only a sliver of what Vivaldi can do. Check out our comprehensive Vivaldi review for more detail on its other features.

firefox android add ons

  • Good privacy policy
  • Mobile extensions
  • Not the fastest browser

Mozilla Firefox is the oldest browser on this list and yet it keeps up well with modern browser trends. In fact, Firefox excels as a mobile browser because it’s one of the few that includes extensions.

Only 17 extensions are available for Firefox Android, but most browsers have zero. They include useful tools such as an ad blocker, a password manager, HTTPS Everywhere and more.

Mozilla Firefox includes cross-device synchronization for your settings, history, bookmarks, open tabs and more. Its performance is good enough for fast web browsing, sending emails and streaming HD videos with little to no latency.

Good Privacy Record

Mozilla’s privacy policy makes it one of the best browsers for privacy. It’s a nonprofit company that doesn’t make its money from collecting and selling user data for targeted advertising, unlike Google. Mozilla states that the only data Firefox collects on its users is technical and interaction data that isn’t associated with your name or email address.

mozilla privacy policy

Firefox has a long history behind it, and it’s changed a lot over time. Take a look at our Firefox review for the full picture.

google chrome android

  • Default Android browser
  • User-friendly
  • Not private
  • No extension support

Most Android phones already have Chrome installed as the phone’s default browser, so there’s no need to download it from the Google Play Store. Chrome is a fast and simple browser that all Android users should have an easy time using.

It can do just about everything the desktop version can except install extensions. This is a shame since Google operates the largest collection of extensions in the world. Without extension support, Chrome is somewhat bare, so it falls behind the rest of the browsers on this list when it comes to features.

Sync All Google Account Data

Fortunately, Chrome for Android phones include good cross-device sync capability. On your Android device, sign in to your Google account to unify your bookmarks, history, settings and other data across your devices for a consistent web browsing experience.

Unlike Brave and Firefox, Chrome’s biggest problem is privacy. Google is an advertising company that makes its money by collecting user data for the creation of targeted ads, and Chrome is one of its primary tools for gathering user data. There are ways to limit Google’s data collection practices, as you can read about in our guide on how to erase your Google history .

google chrome sync

If you don’t use Chrome, there’s a good chance you’re using a browser based on its design. You can read our full Chrome review for more information on the world’s most popular browser.

Best Android Browsers: Honorable Mentions

Although these aren’t the best Android browsers ever, they fell just short of our top five. Here are some other Android browsers worth taking a quick look at.

opera speed dial

The Opera browser is a useful Android browser even though it didn’t make the cut. The Opera browser for Android includes a few extra features that would usually be downloaded as extensions for most other browsers, including a built-in VPN, an ad-blocker, a crypto wallet and night mode.

Night mode changes the theme to a dark mode and reduces the amount of blue light from the screen in order to reduce eye strain.

The Opera browser isn’t very private. It collects user data and shares it with third parties, so its private browsing mode won’t be of much help. Furthermore, it was acquired by the Chinese company Qihoo 360 in 2016, raising questions about the potential for surveillance from the Chinese government. Read our full Opera review , Opera vs Chrome and Opera vs Firefox for more information.

Microsoft Edge

edge desktop

Microsoft Edge went through a major overhaul when it was redesigned with Chromium in 2020. That gave it a huge boost in speed and regularly put it in first or second place in most of our speed tests , so we thought it was worth mentioning. Read our Microsoft Edge vs Chrome review to see how the two compare.

Aside from that, Microsoft Edge doesn’t differ too much from Chrome or other Chromium-based browsers. You can read more about it in our full Edge review .

Final Thoughts: Best Android Browsers

There are dozens of Android browsers on the market, but we believe these five are the best Android browsers. Chrome is pre-installed on all Android devices by default, and although it’s a good browser, it’s not the only one.

We think Puffin is the best Android browser because its security and speed are unmatched. Firefox and Brave are great browsers for privacy and security as well. Vivaldi is good for power users, and Chrome is a simple but effective browser for everyday internet use.

Ultimately, your personal needs will determine which of these Android browsers will be the best for you, but hopefully we’ve helped you make an informed decision.

What do you think is the best Android web browser? Do you like fast Android browsers like Puffin, or do you need something as customizable as Vivaldi? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below. As always, thank you for reading.

There are many good browsers for Android, but we think the best Android browser is Puffin.

Puffin is the fastest Android browser we’ve come across.

Not only is Puffin the fastest Android browser, but it has the best security protection too.

I’m a bit of a novice but review very helpful

Brave and Firefox are very good choices and Vivaldi’s Android browser has greatly improved since these reviews were posted. However, I would suggest no longer considering Opera since it is funded (if not owned) by a Chinese company.

I would always choose Chrome over any other browser, simply because it’s in the habit now and working with Google apps is so easy there.

Why is Chrome browser still deemed private? It’s owned by Alphabet/Google, the world’s biggest data mining and search engine oligarchy.

Privacy is built in.

Online privacy isn’t just something you should hope for — it’s something you should expect. That’s why Safari comes with industry-leading privacy protection technology built in, including Intelligent Tracking Prevention that identifies trackers and helps prevent them from profiling or following you across the web. Upgrading to iCloud+ gives you even more privacy protections, including the ability to sign up for websites and services without having to share your personal email address.

Intelligent Tracking Prevention

latest safari browser for android

Safari stops trackers in their tracks.

What you browse is no one’s business but your own. Safari has built‑in protections to help stop websites and data-collection companies from watching and profiling you based on your browsing activity. Intelligent Tracking Prevention uses on‑device intelligence to help prevent cross‑site tracking and stops known trackers from using your IP address — making it incredibly difficult to learn who you are and what you’re interested in.

Privacy Report

Safari makes it simple to see how your privacy is protected on all the websites you visit. Click Privacy Report in the Safari menu for a snapshot of cross-site trackers currently prevented from profiling you on the website you’re visiting. Or view a weekly Privacy Report to see how Safari protects you as you browse over time.

Customization

Safari is more customizable than ever. Organize your tabs into Tab Groups so it’s easy to go from one interest to the next. Set a custom background image and fine-tune your browser window with your favorite features — like Reading List, Favorites, iCloud Tabs, and Siri Suggestions. And third-party extensions for iPhone, iPad, and Mac let you do even more with Safari, so you can browse the way you want across all your devices.

Safari Profiles allow you to separate your history, extensions, Tab Groups, favorites, cookies, and more. Quickly switch between profiles for topics you create, like Personal and Work.

Web apps let you save your favorite websites to the Dock on Mac and to the Home Screen on iPhone and iPad. A simplified toolbar and separate settings give you an app-like experience.

Surf safe and sound.

Strong security protections in Safari help keep you safe. Passkeys introduce a safer way to sign in. iCloud Keychain securely stores and autofills passkeys and passwords across all your devices. Safari also notifies you when it encounters suspicious websites and prevents them from loading. Because it loads each web page in a separate process, any harmful code is always confined to a single browser tab so it won’t crash the entire application or access your data. And Safari automatically upgrades sites from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS when available.

Passkeys introduce a more secure and easier way to sign in. No passwords required.

Passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and safe from phishing and data leaks, and they are stronger than all common two-factor authentication types. Thanks to iCloud Keychain, they work across all your Apple devices, and they even work on non-Apple devices.

Apple Pay and Wallet make checkout as easy as lifting a finger.

Apple Pay is the easiest and most secure way to shop on Safari — allowing you to complete transactions with Face ID or Touch ID on your iPhone or iPad, with Touch ID on your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, or by double-clicking the side button on your Apple Watch.

With AutoFill, you can easily fill in your previously saved credit card information from the Wallet app during checkout. Your credit card details are never shared, and your transactions are protected with industry-leading security.

Same Safari. Different device.

Safari works seamlessly and syncs your passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs, and more across Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch. And when your Mac, iOS, or iPadOS devices are near each other, they can automatically pass what you’re doing in Safari from one device to another using Handoff. You can even copy images, video, or text from Safari on your iPhone or iPad, then paste into another app on your nearby Mac — or vice versa.

When you use Safari on multiple devices, your tabs carry over from one Apple device to another. So you can search, shop, work, or browse on your iPhone, then switch to your iPad or Mac and pick up right where you left off.

Save web pages you want to read later by adding them to your Reading List. Then view them on any of your iCloud-connected devices — even if you’re not connected to the internet.

iCloud Keychain securely stores your user names, passkeys, passwords, and credit card numbers and keeps them up to date on your trusted devices. So you can easily sign in to your favorite websites — as well as apps on iOS and iPadOS — and quickly make online purchases.

Designed for developers.

Deep WebKit integration between Mac hardware and macOS allows Safari to deliver the fastest performance and the longest battery life of any browser on the platform, while supporting modern web standards for rich experiences in the browser. WebKit in macOS Sonoma includes optimizations that enable even richer browsing experiences, and give developers more control over styling and layout — allowing for more engaging content.

The 7 Best Android Browsers of 2024

Find the best web browser for your Android device

latest safari browser for android

  • Swansea University, Staffordshire University

latest safari browser for android

  • Southern New Hampshire University
  • Switching from iOS

Your Android may have a web browser built into it, but that doesn't mean it's the best Android browser. Many far superior options ensure your browsing experience is faster, more reliable, stable, and more secure. Here's a look at the best Android web browser for any situation.

Most Stable Browser: Firefox

Very reliable.

Easy to use.

Can slow down phone.

Need to use Firefox on PC/Mac for full benefit.

A popular name over the years, Firefox for Android is very stable regardless of the age of your Android phone, so you'll rarely experience a freeze or crash. It's also designed with privacy in mind, with tracking protection that automatically blocks parts of web pages trying to track browsing activity.

Additionally, its search tools intuitively guess what you might be looking for based on past searches, and there are plenty of easy shortcuts already implemented.

That said, to enjoy browsing syncing, you'll need to use Firefox on your desktop or laptop and that's not as good a browser as some alternatives.

Best VPN Browser: Opera

Built-in VPN.

Built-in ad blocker.

Safe to use.

Speed issues depending on device used.

If you want a feature-rich browser that still manages to be pretty speedy, Opera is a good choice to pursue. It has a built-in ad blocker that effectively gets rid of intrusive ads while maintaining your privacy, and has a built-in VPN that further enhances your privacy and security while browsing.

Elsewhere, there's a personalized news feed providing AI-curated news tailored to your interests. There's also a night mode for easier browsing at night, as well as other accessibility settings, such as being able to adjust text size. For a general all-around browser, Opera has mostly everything.

Fastest Android Browser: Chrome

It's fast.

Google Translate built-in.

Quite a large install for older phones.

Frequently pre-installed on Android phones due to it being a Google product, the Chrome browser for Android is also the fastest browser out there. It's a browser you're probably already used to due to its prevalence on PCs and Macs, which makes Chrome for Android even better, as it easily syncs to other devices.

Chrome also offers personalized search results, autofill, incognito browsing, and safe browsing. The latter means Google keeps an eye open if you happen to be browsing any sites it deems dangerous, giving you a warning and blocking you from accessing them. There's also Google Translate built into it, enabling you to quickly translate entire websites.

Best VR Browser: Samsung Internet Browser

You can browse the internet with VR.

Optimized for Samsung phones.

Can't sync with other browsers.

Samsung phones may have Samsung Internet Browser already installed, but odds are you're already debating whether it's worth it over more reputable names like Chrome. It kind of is, at least if you have a Gear VR headset.

Place your phone into a Samsung Gear VR headset when you're viewing a web page and it opens up in fairly immersive virtual reality. It's a cool gimmick that makes it worth having Samsung Internet Browser installed.

For everyone else, it's not a bad app. It has anti-tracking capabilities, secure browsing that gives you a heads up on nefarious websites, and a content blocker. For everyday use, there are advantages, like the ability to save all images on a site at the same time, along with a competent download manager.

Best Gesture Driven Browser: Dolphin

Gesture driven interface.

Many useful add-ons.

Ad-blocker.

Not the most stable of browsers.

Not the fastest.

Dolphin approaches web browsing differently from most other Android web browsers, which makes it worth considering if you want to use something unique. For one thing, it uses gestures to allow you to browse websites. For instance, you can draw the letter B to use Bing or draw the letter D to go to Duckduckgo. It's down to you how you set up these gestures.

Dolphin also allows you to talk your way around the internet. You can speak to it to search online or share content on Facebook and other social networks. Elsewhere, there's support for Flash, an ad-blocker, as well as incognito/private browsing. Multiple add-ons can also be installed such as easier ways to browse Dropbox or Pocket.

It's not the fastest browser out there, and it has some issues with stability, but when it works, it has a plethora of great options.

Most Charitable Browser: Ecosia

Trees are planted in exchange for your use.

Fewer features than some other browsers.

We all know we should be doing more for the world, but knowing how to help can feel tricky. Ecosia is a web browser for Android that also helps reforest the planet while you search via it. Through the money Ecosia makes from searches, it funds reforestation in a bid to empower communities around the world. It has a transparent policy that proves it does this, too.

Besides that, it's a capable browser in its own right, as it's based on Chromium , much like Chrome. It's fast and secure and offers tabs, a private mode, bookmarks, and a history section. While other features are a little thin, the majority of users will be more than happy with what Ecosia Browser provides.

Most Simple Android Browser: Naked Browser Pro

It'll run on any age of Android phones.

Minimalist user interface.

Not very accessible to inexperienced users.

Very plain.

Isn't free.

If you need an internet browser for Android that's incredibly simple and basic, while still being useful, Naked Browser Pro is for you. There's a learning curve to it thanks to its extremely minimalist user interface, but if you're keen to get a bit more technical with things for the sake of speed and efficiency, it's worth it.

Naked Browser Pro is very simple looking, but that means it uses very little memory and there's no risk of it tracking anything. That's ideal for both the security-conscious, and those users with aging Android phones who need to worry about memory and disk space.

Naked Browser Pro still offers some useful features, such as tabs, and the ability to restore where you were in case of a crash. Mostly, though, this is a browser designed for the most minimalist of needs. It costs $5.95.

latest safari browser for android

Safari is a popular web browser developed by Apple for its products such as the iPhone, Mac, and iPad. However, when it comes to Android devices, you may be wondering if it is possible to install the Safari browser on them. Unfortunately, the answer is no.

Apple has never made Safari available for Android, and it is highly unlikely that they will do so in the future. Safari is a proprietary software that is exclusive to Apple devices, and the company has never shown any indication of releasing it for Android.

If you are looking for a web browser for your Android device, there are plenty of alternatives to Safari that are available on the Google Play Store. Popular options include Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Microsoft Edge.

These browsers offer similar features and functionality to Safari, such as tabbed browsing, bookmarks, and the ability to save passwords and autofill forms. They are also regularly updated with security patches and performance improvements to ensure a smooth browsing experience.

In addition to these popular browsers, there are also several niche options available on the Google Play Store. These may include browsers that are specifically designed for privacy, speed, or accessibility. While they may not be as well-known as the top browsers, they can still offer a unique and useful experience for users.

In conclusion, if you are an Android user, you cannot install Safari on your device. However, there are plenty of alternatives available that offer similar features and functionality. It is worth exploring different browsers on the Google Play Store to find the one that best suits your needs and preferences.

Brave Private Web Browser, VPN

Brave Browser is one of the newer Android browsers. It came out in 2016 and has a variety of features. There is an ad blocker built-in. Additionally, it can block third-party cookies and block scripts, and it even has HTTPS everywhere. It also boasts optimizations for speed and battery life improvements.

You can even keep track of all the stuff that it blocks. In real-world use, it is highly functional and even occasionally fun to use. It also has most of the basic features, like bookmarks, history, extensions, and a privacy (incognito) mode . The app is entirely free, with no in-app purchases or ads.

Price: Free

Dolphin Browser has seen a lot of success on Android. It has a decent set of features as well. That includes theming, flash support, ad-block, incognito mode, and some tertiary features like gesture controls. There is also add-on and extension support if you need that, along with a native adblocker. While it may not hold the same level of engagement as it did in the past when locating a quality browser was a challenge, it remains on this list because it still exceeds the criteria necessary for inclusion.

DuckDuckGo screenshot

DuckDuckGo Privacy Browser is a reasonably good alternative for folks who value privacy. It has a lot of the basic stuff, like forced HTTPS, a private search, and a close button that deletes your browsing data and closes all of your tabs. Additionally, the app gives each website a privacy grade (on an A-F scale), so you can see exactly how bad any given site is. Of course, it blocks trackers and stuff like that as well. It doesn’t have some super useful features like password syncing (like Firefox and Chrome), but it’s otherwise a great mobile browser.

Ecosia: Browse to plant trees.

Ecosia is an environmentally friendly mobile web browser. It features all of the usual stuff like bookmarks, multiple tabs, a private browsing mode, and downloads. It pulls from Chromium’s open-source project. Thus, it looks and feels a bit like Chrome as well. The big draw here is the cause. The browser donates up to 80% of its profits to plant trees. That isn’t a browser feature, but it’s definitely worth it. This one is good for those who don’t need to browse the web often but still want something that works well. The tree thing is a bonus. It’s also free.

Firefox Browsers

Firefox Fast & Private Browser

There are two really good Firefox browsers. The first is the standard Firefox browser. It features cross-platform syncing, a rock-solid browsing experience, tracking protection, a built-in password manager, and more. It is Google Chrome’s primary rival, and there’s little difference between the two in terms of features and capabilities. The second good Firefox option is Firefox Focus, a privacy browser with a ton of security and privacy features. You can find the standard Firefox browser at the button below, or check out Firefox Focus here . They are both excellent Android browsers.

Google Chrome

Of course, we give the obligatory nod to the most popular Android browser. Many people have this pre-installed on their devices and opt to just keep using it. That’s a perfectly reasonable thing to do. It features syncing with Google Chrome on desktop, along with the latest Material Design, unlimited browsing tabs, deeper integration with Android, and plenty of other features for both basic browsing and power users.

There are four total Chrome browsers. In descending order of stability, you have the regular Google Chrome, Chrome Beta, Chrome Dev, and Chrome Canary. Choose at your own risk. Google Chrome almost always has the latest Android features before other browsers as well.

Kiwi Browser - Fast & Quiet

Kiwi Browser is one of the newer Android browsers. It uses chromium as a base. Thus, you may recognize a lot of its visual elements and settings options. It also loads pages pretty well. Some of the other features include native ad blocking, a pop-up blocker, a night mode with a 100% contrast mode for AMOLED screens, and crypto jacking protection. There are some user interface tweaks as well, such as the address bar resting on the bottom of the app instead of the top. It’s delightful to use, although we do miss the desktop syncing available on the big-name browsers. If you don’t need that, this is definitely one of the best options.

Waterfox: Privacy Web Browser

Waterfox is a fairly good browser based on the Gecko engine. The user interface of this browser will remind you of the early days of Firefox. The design is minimalistic, which gives the browser a good vibe overall. It also comes with stuff like anti-tracking; by using Oblivious DNS, the browser will ensure that you’re not being spied on. You can launch private tabs. There’s also a container tabs feature that lets you categorize your tabs according to your preferences and even color-code them, which is pretty neat. It also claims to collect minimal data to ensure a rigid policy of no telemetry collection. There’s also stuff like add-ons, customizable settings for history, cookie deletion, and much more. The only downside is that this one still needs to be a bit more optimized for Android. There are occasional bugs and UI disturbances here and there.

Price: Free /In-app purchases ($20.00 per item)

Microsoft Edge: AI browser

Microsoft Edge is a surprisingly decent mobile web browser. It competes favorably with Chrome and Firefox in terms of functionality. You can sync passwords, bookmarks, and history if you want to. Plus, you can continue browsing on the desktop version from the mobile version, and vice versa. This used to be an original browser from Microsoft. However, the company switched to a Chromium base, so it works a lot like Chrome with some light user interface changes. You use a Microsoft account to sync instead of a Google account in this browser.

Opera’s browsers

Price: Free /In-app purchases ($8.00 – $48.00 per item)

Opera browser with AI

Opera has a few different Android browsers. The first is their flagship browser, Opera Browser ( Google Play ). It features cross-device syncing with the desktop version, support for multiple platforms, autofill, and a native adblocker. Next comes Opera Touch (linked at the button below), a mobile browser with modern mobile features like tracker blocking and ad-blocking. The third is Opera Mini ( Google Play ), a lighter browser with the ability to save up to 90% of your data while using it. It also has an ad blocker, an offline reading mode, and more. Finally, we have Opera GX ( Google Play ), a gaming browser that includes a lot of the same features as the others but also includes a gaming news feed and theming, syncing between the desktop and mobile versions, and more. You can go with any of the four browsers, depending on your tastes.

Samsung Internet Browser screenshot

Samsung Internet Browser is surprisingly good. It features swipe gestures, plug-ins, a quick menu, and some Material Design elements. Some of the plug-ins even allow for ad-blocking. There are also features for things like Amazon shopping, online shopping in general, and support for 360-degree video. This is likely the browser many Samsung phone owners see before they make Chrome their default. The app is labeled beta. However, it’s more stable than some non-beta browsers, even on this list.

Stargon Browser screenshot

Stargon Browser is a bit of a wildcard on this list. It has a bunch of features and it seems to work pretty well in our testing. The features includes a gesture control system, custom fonts, a DNS VPN for International folks, a built-in translation service powered by Google Translate, and a video downloader function. There is even a dark mode. Stargon lacks a lot of the big browser features like bookmark syncing, but it does everything else quite well. Even its secret incognito mode is pretty good. The app is entirely free without ads.

Price: Free /In-app purchases ($0.99 per item)

Surfy Browser - best android web browsers

Surfy Browser has a hipster name and not the biggest following. However, it’s a surprisingly decent browser. It features the usual niceties like bookmarks, history, multiple search providers, and things like that. You also get another layer of power-user features like an ad block, theming, and surprisingly fun toolbar customizations. The app’s claim to fame is the text-to-speech feature that reads website pages to you if you want it to. It’s not a bad way to go if you need something like this.

Tor Browser for Android

Tor Browser for Android is probably the best browser for privacy. It connects to Tor’s proxy network and hides what you’re doing from your ISP and, basically, everybody else. It surfs the web fairly well, and it also blocks trackers, defends against surveillance, and includes multi-layer encryption. The app is in the very early stages of development at the time of this writing. It requires Orbot to use Tor’s network. However, future versions of this browser will be able to connect to Tor’s proxy network on their own. We’re comfortable enough putting this on here despite its early age. We do only recommend this for people who are serious about their privacy and power users who understand how this works.

Vivaldi Browser - Fast & Safe

Vivaldi is the newest browser on the list. It’s a reasonably decent browser with a surprisingly decent number of features. They include cross-platform syncing with the desktop version, a built-in note function, full-length website screenshots, a privacy browser mode, and the ability to quickly change search engines. The app’s developers are former employees of Opera, so they know a thing or two about browsers. The app is in open beta at the time of this writing, but it should be stable enough for most people.

It's super fast and easy to use with a convenient navigation bar at the bottom and includes a host of cool features. You'll find a video assistant that makes watching videos a breeze, a built-in tracking blocker to ensure your browsing is safe and private, and compatibility with third-party ad blockers.

Emerging from the ashes of Internet Explorer is Microsoft Edge. It's nice having the navigation buttons at the bottom, especially using taller screens, making it much easier to open new tabs and quickly add articles to your reading list. Always remember you've got options

One of the best parts of owning an Android phone is the ability to customize the default apps to fit your needs, so if you've switched from a Samsung phone to a Google Pixel and miss the streamlined functionality of the Samsung Internet Browser, you can download and set Samsung's browser as your default.

I have switched over to Brave as of late because I appreciate the ad and tracker blocker functionality, and I get a kick out of tallying up BATs using the Brave Rewards program. It's still dubious as to whether they hold actual value or not, and I haven't yet used them to contribute to a site I enjoy, but I love the premise.

Beyond Chrome and Brave, I'd have to recommend the Microsoft Edge browser strongly. The last time I used Edge for PC it still wasn't my cup of tea, but Edge for Android works remarkably smoothly and is a solid pick especially if you do use Edge on your computer, as there's excellent back-and-forth integration between the mobile and PC versions.

What chrome for android needs to learn from safari.

Apple’s iOS browser does some things better than Chrome for Android

Google Chrome is one of the best browsers on Android — and elsewhere. This makes sense, as Google puts a ton of resources into ensuring that it stays the top-dog in terms of market share. However, when you look at Chrome for Android , you might notice that it feels a little long in the tooth. Sure, the browser may have recently received a Material You theme overhaul, but other than that, the basic way that you interact with it has stayed the same for years. Things are different on iOS, and Apple keeps its pre-installed browser Safari feeling fresh with significantly improvements.

These days, I much prefer to use Safari on a day-to-day basis, and I’m not happy with Chrome whenever I’m using some of my favorite Android phones .

Bottom-based interface

Apple took a leap of faith and decided to switch Safari over to a bottom-based interface. The step was initially met with criticism from loyal Apple fans, so the company added an optional screen-top interface, but the default way to use Safari is with the address bar and most control elements at the bottom. This makes Safari great for one-handed and ergonomic use. Typing in another address or reaching the tab switcher doesn’t involve overstretching your thumbs all the way across the screen and forcing you to adjust the grip on your phone. Sure, you still need to tap some options at the top, but the majority of interactions happen at the bottom.

Compare that to the state of Chrome on Android. Google experimented with a bottom-based interface for a long time, but ultimately decided to scrap the “Chrome Duet” experiment altogether (the codename under which Chrome’s bottom-based interface was developed). The decision was met with an immediate outcry from the enthusiast crowd that was already using this bottom interface through hidden Chrome flags, but Google has so far stood its ground. It’s a shame, because handling Chrome is a significantly less ergonomic experience than Safari. To open new tabs, type in an address or search term, or to get to the overflow menu, you always need to stretch your thumb to the top of the screen.

What makes this more infuriating is the fact that Chrome for iOS puts a lot of options in a bottom bar that simply doesn’t exist on Android. On iOS, Chrome offers backwards and forwards buttons at the bottom, along with the tab switcher, a new tab button, and the overflow menu. The address bar remains up top, but this is already so much more than what Chrome users get on Android.

That’s not to say that Safari’s interface is perfect, nor always intuitive. To reach the important overflow menu that gives you options like page zoom, website translation, and other website settings, you need to tap a nondescript “aA” button in the left of the address bar. It’s true that Android’s vertical ellipsis isn’t much more descriptive than that, but at least Google and third-party developers consistently use it throughout apps to denote a menu that lists more options. The unintuitive, weird “aA” menu is pretty much exclusive to Safari on iOS.

Some of my complaints here are easily enough resolved by switching to a third-party browser on Android. Virtually all other popular browsers for the OS add at least some buttons and tools to the bottom of the screen, even if most retain the address bar at the top by default. Come on, Google, there is definitely proof that people are interested in using an interface like this.

All the smooth gestures

Another aspect where Safari takes the crown is gestures. Once you know your way around Safari using them, you might never need to tap a button again for dealing with your tabs. Safari lets you switch between tabs by swiping left or right on the address bar. It even has a clever trick to teach you how to use this feature. The browser shows a small preview of the next tab’s address bar to the left or right of the one for the currently active tab (depending on how many tabs you have opened and which one you’re looking at). This indicates that you can just swipe left or right to open it, making it easy to compare two websites on the fly, without having to use split-screen or any other tricks like it.

My favorite gesture is probably the one for opening a new tab. Once you’ve reached your right-most tab, you can just swipe one more time, like you’d want to open a tab to the right of it that doesn’t yet exist — Safari will then open a new tab. I find this much faster and more convenient than long-pressing the tab switcher and hitting New tab or opening the tab switcher to do this, which are options available on both Chrome and Safari. Safari also lets you quickly access your tab overview by swiping up from the address bar, and you can close tabs you don’t need anymore from this view with a swipe to the left.

Chrome, to its credit, is capable of most of these gestures, too. You can swipe left and right on the address bar to switch between tabs, and you can swipe down from the address bar to open the tab switcher — you can even swipe away tabs you no longer need. However, the gestures feel a lot less fluid and appear more tacked-on — plus, there aren’t similarly clever indicators that you can switch tabs in this manner, not like what we get on Safari. Combined with the bottom navigation, the way Safari handles gestures is once again more ergonomic than what Chrome does.

This may be sound like nitpicking, but smooth animations and clear transitions between pages make it easier to interact with technology. Not everyone knows their way around their phone as well as people in the tech bubble, and fluid, logical animations help a great deal in helping users understand shortcuts and how their phone’s navigation functions. Plus, I also have some gripes with Safari in this category. For some reason, it’s not possible to close tabs in the tab overview by swiping to the right — left is the only way to go.

Extension support

One final thing that Safari has going for it is extension support. Given how Apple is known to love its walled garden, this actually feels like quite the surprise. Safari for iOS supports a whole range of extensions that also work on its desktop counterpart, like password managers, ad and tracking blockers, CSS tweakers, couponing services, reading services, new tab customizers, grammar and spell checkers, and more.

To find out what’s hindering Google from adding extension support, we talked to Vivaldi CEO Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner. He told us that in the open-source Chromium code (which Vivaldi also uses for its browsers) instructions concerning extensions are commented out for mobile. This means that it’s theoretically possible to enable extension support if the will were there. That’s also how browsers like Kiwi are able to support Chrome extensions on Android, though for third-party Chromium browsers like it, this support comes at a cost. For every single update, the developers have to ensure compatibility by checking if any of the extension code has broken — which is a significant hurdle in fast adoption of security patches and feature updates within Chromium code.

It’s possible that Google’s main motivation behind not allowing mobile extensions is ad blocking concerns. As long as Chrome remains the most-used browser on Android, Google doesn’t have much incentive to add features that could hurt its bottom line, even if there are more than enough ad blockers on Android. These are just a tad more complicated to use than a browser extension, though, which likely means that fewer people take advantage of these solutions than they might on desktop browsers.

Good artists copy, great artists steal

Chrome and its Chromium rendering engine may be unrivaled today, with the browser routinely winning benchmarking races. But that’s not all there is to a good browser. If Google wants to woo its users with features again, rather than just relying on its position as the default browser on Android, it needs to innovate on the feature front. Like we said, Safari isn’t the only browser that offers good ideas, so it’s time for Google to start looking at the competition — and downright steal what makes sense.

Safari Browser

Safari is a browser for iOS that’s now available for Android. It has most features of the original and functions the same way. You get Dark Mode, Private Browsing, and other minor options. The speed is still there almost no load times between pages.

Security-wise, there’s no way to tell if it retains the level of protection of iOS. The settings are very limited. You have the basic setup like cookies and history management. Nothing your Firefox or Chrome can’t already do. There are no special utilities that entice you to replace your default.

Lightning-fast speed

The best thing about Safari is its speed. It’s lightning-fast. You can say it rivals even Chrome when it comes to loading time. Download time is also great, but not as fast as the iOS version. Switching between pages and tabs are seamless.

The interface is very clean and easy to use. You don’t have that many adjustment options to choose from, but then again, that’s the whole point. The design is to keep things as simple as possible. They may have gotten carried away on simplicity. The Android version doesn’t retain the sophistication of its iOS counterpart.

Too few choices make the whole app look empty and dated.

Doesn’t use many resources

Safari comes in a small size, which makes sense, considering it doesn’t have any plugins. It uses less data than mainstream Android browsers like Firefox and Internet Explorer. The app is also lenient on your RAM. So, you can run more programs alongside it, no problem. Having multiple tabs doesn’t slow down your process, either.

All tabs are interconnected

There are no indications that Safari protects Android users from data collection or malicious sites. It doesn’t handle each tab as a separate instance like Chrome. This means if one tab crashes, so do the others. That says enough about the lack of security. You also don’t have the restore previous session option after a crash.

Other than the built-in Dark Mode, this browser doesn’t offer any other extensions. You can still sync your Google account, but it wouldn’t carry over the addons you had. You will have to use specific plugins for Safari, and there aren’t many of them for this version.

Fast but not secure

The app has good overall qualities and is reliable when it comes to speed. Unfortunately, that’s the extent of its advantages. If all you do is browse the internet, Safari is the way to go.

For more sensitive tasks, stick with your default. There is nothing this browser offers that your main one doesn’t already do. It also doesn’t retain the level of protection that the iOS version has. There’s no guarantee that you’ll be safe as it claims.

How to Access Safari Browser on Android

Safari Browser is primarily designed for Apple devices and is not officially available for Android. However, if you still want to experience Safari on your Android device, you can try alternative methods to access it:

  • Open the Google Play Store on your Android device.
  • Search for third-party browsers that offer a Safari-like browsing experience. Look for browsers that mention Safari compatibility or a similar user interface.
  • Install the Safari-like browser of your choice from the search results.
  • Once the installation is complete, locate the newly installed browser on your home screen or app drawer.
  • Tap on the newly installed browser to open it.
  • The browser’s interface and features may resemble Safari, but it is important to note that it is not the official Safari Browser developed by Apple.
  • Start browsing the web using the address bar or search bar provided by the Safari-like browser.
  • Explore the features and customize the settings according to your preference.
  • You can open multiple tabs in the browser to browse multiple websites simultaneously, similar to Safari.
  • To close the Safari-like browser, simply press the home button or navigate to the app switcher and swipe it away.

Keep in mind that while these alternative browsers may provide a similar experience to Safari on Android, they may not have all the features and optimizations of the official Safari Browser. It is essential to read user reviews and check the compatibility of the browser with your specific Android device before installing.

Remember, Safari is primarily designed for Apple devices, and if you have an Android device, there are many other great browsers available on the Google Play Store that are specifically designed for Android and offer a seamless browsing experience.

Troubleshooting and Common Issues

While Safari is a reliable and user-friendly browser, you may encounter occasional issues or glitches. Here are some common troubleshooting tips for addressing Safari-related problems:

  • Clear Cache and Cookies: If Safari is loading pages slowly or displaying outdated content, clearing the cache and cookies can often resolve the issue. Go to Safari’s preferences, select the “Privacy” tab, and click on “Manage Website Data” to clear the cache and cookies.
  • Disable Extensions: Browser extensions can sometimes conflict with Safari and cause performance issues. Temporarily disable or remove any unnecessary extensions to see if that resolves the problem.
  • Update Safari: Keeping your browser up to date is essential for optimal performance and security. Check for updates in the App Store (for iOS and macOS) or in the Microsoft Store (for Windows) to ensure you’re using the latest version of Safari .
  • Restart your Device: Sometimes, a simple restart can solve temporary glitches or issues with Safari. Close the browser, restart your device, and then open Safari again to see if the problem persists.
  • Reset Safari Settings: If Safari is still acting up, you can try resetting its settings to default. Go to Safari’s preferences and select the “Advanced” tab. Click on “Reset” and choose the options you want to reset, such as history, bookmarks, and extensions.
  • Disable Pop-up Blocker: If certain websites or web pages are not loading properly, it may be because Safari’s pop-up blocker is preventing the content from appearing. Go to Safari’s preferences and select the “Websites” tab. In the left sidebar, select “Pop-up Windows” and make sure the desired websites are not blocked.
  • Check Internet Connection: Slow or unstable internet connectivity can affect Safari’s performance. Ensure that you have a stable and reliable internet connection by checking your Wi-Fi or cellular data settings.

If the above troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, it may be helpful to seek assistance from Apple Support or consult online forums and communities dedicated to Safari users. Remember, these suggestions are general troubleshooting tips, and more specific solutions may be required depending on the nature of the problem.

In conclusion, Safari Browser offers a seamless and user-friendly browsing experience across various devices. Whether you’re using a Mac, iPhone, iPad, or even a Windows PC, Safari provides a range of features and benefits that make it a top choice among internet users.

Safari’s new update can tell which websites have tracked you in the past

Shubham Agarwal

Apple didn’t publicly release MacOS’s next big update alongside the launch of iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 . But you won’t have to wait for that to experience one of the MacOS Big Sur’s best features : Safari 14. Apple is now rolling out Safari 14 as a standalone update for existing MacOS Catalina and Mojave users.

Unlike other app updates, you can’t download Safari 14 from the App Store on your Mac. Instead, the update will be available under System Preferences > Software Update.

The new Safari update offers a host of both visual and under-the-hood improvements across the board. One of its highlights is a new privacy tool that lets you investigate which websites have tried to keep tabs on you with cross-site trackers. You can access it from the Safari dropbox > Privacy Report.

  • Here’s why I finally gave up on using Safari on my Mac
  • 7 key settings in macOS Sonoma you should change right now
  • This dangerous new Mac malware steals your credit card info

Safari’s landing page has been redesigned as well. In addition to a visual refresh, you will also find a shortcut for Privacy Report on the homepage and options for setting a custom background image — similar to Google Chrome. Plus, you can now choose to have a number of other sections right on the start page like Siri Suggestions and Reading List.

Further, Safari 14 adds a handful of long-overdue upgrades to the bar which shows all of your open tabs. It now displays favicons by default and a preview of the website when you hover over its active tab. Another notable new feature is the addition of 4K HDR resolution support for YouTube videos .

On top of that, Apple has, at long last, discontinued support for Adobe Flash for better online protection. Flash apps are notorious for their lax security and are often misused to deceive users. Competitors such as Google Chrome have long abandoned Flash. Safari 14 is also expected to let you log in to websites that support Fast Identity Online (FIDO) with Face ID and Touch ID on iOS, iPad OS, and MacOS but it remains unclear whether that is available yet.

MacOS Big Sur is still in its beta phase and Apple has not shared an exact launch date for it, stating a “Fall 2020” release window. It could announce its public launch at its forthcoming event where the company will also unveil its next line of iPhones .

I'm not a typical Windows or Mac user. Where most people choose one operating system and stick with it, I use both Windows 11 and MacOS regularly, going back and forth daily depending on my workflow. And it's easier to do than you probably think.

I have a fast Windows 11 desktop with three 27-inch 4K displays, and I use that for all my research-intensive work that benefits from multiple monitors. But for writing simple copy, and for personal tasks, I use a MacBook Pro 14 M1 Pro simply because I like it so much. It's not MacOS that draws me to the machine, but its battery life, cool yet quick operation, excellent keyboard and touchpad, and awesome HDR display. To stay sane, I've worked out a few tricks and techniques to make the constant switching bearable. Here's what I've learned. Adjust to your keyboards

Installing apps on a Mac is generally considered to be safer than doing so on Windows and open-source software is usually benign but there are exceptions to both of these assumptions that can do untold damage to your privacy and security.

A recent discovery by Trend Micro provides a startling example of this risk. An open-source app designed to help Mac owners with iPhone and iPad app signing has been altered to include a nasty hack that steals your Apple Keychain data. The original app is called ResignTool and it’s available for free on the popular open-source site, GitHub. The app is six years old and both the code and the ready-to-run app can be downloaded from GitHub. That isn’t the problem.

Apple just launched a new website that's dedicated to macOS and iOS security and there are already two blog posts that provide examples of what to expect, one providing a deep dive into memory allocation within the XNU kernel at the heart of all Apple devices, and another discussing the improved security bounty process.

The new website will undoubtedly become a critical resource for Apple security researchers, both providing information and serving as a hub for submitting bounties. The Apple Security Research website is also where you can apply for an official Apple Security Research Device (SRD) to help with identifying vulnerabilities by providing special access to what are normally protected areas of iOS.

5 New Mobile Browser Alternatives to Chrome and Safari

Look beyond Chrome and Safari. There are other mobile browsers out there that can completely change your gateway to the internet.

Your smartphone comes loaded with a browser and you probably use that without ever changing it. But that might mean you are missing out on a much better web experience if you never tried other browser apps.

For a lot of people, Google Chrome is the default mobile browser. The latest Chrome 66 update has introduced a new UI and changed the media player. You can do a lot more with Chrome on Android than you think, and the iOS version is an excellent alternative to Safari .

But look beyond Chrome. There are other mobile browsers out there that can completely change your gateway to the internet.

1. Smooz (Android, iOS): One-Handed Browsing With Gestures

Usually, browsing on your smartphone requires two hands. You hold your phone in one, and you swipe with the other. Most browsers don't enable a good one-handed experience where your thumb does all the work. Most browsers aren't Smooz either.

Smooz uses smart gestures for the most common tasks in a browser. For example, tap and hold a link to open it in a new tab. Swipe to switch from one tab to the next. Pin tabs with a custom gesture so you don't accidentally close it or browse away from it. It's quite intuitive, and you'll love the experience.

Of course, you'll need to type with one hand too. For that, use Gboard keyboard on Android with its one-handed mode, or learn how to type with one hand on the iPhone .

2. Cake (Android, iOS): Better Search Experience With Quick Loading

Cake reckons that the current mobile browser is a miniaturized version of the desktop browser. So, the team set out to build a browser made for the smartphone. It focuses more on helping you find and browse things easily.

Cake is unique in offering to change how search works on the browser (Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, or any other). Instead of the usual search results page, it opens the first organic search result automatically. Swipe right to go to the next page, already opened. Behind the scenes, Cake takes care of pre-loading the fastest sites so that it's a smooth, fluid experience.

The browser also offers deep customization. You can use different search engines for different purposes, like Google for web search, Giphy for images, YouTube for videos, and so on. Plus it has ad-blocking, popup-blocking, and many of the other features in the best modern mobile browsers .

3. Internet by Amazon (Android): Light, Fast Browser With News Feed

Android users who run out of space and need faster lightweight apps , there's a new browser for you. And it's made by Amazon, of all people.

It's called internet and takes less than 5MB of storage space. It is quick to launch as well and behaves like most common browsers. There is even a "private mode" which some other light browsers lack. And Amazon has included something to make it feel more like Google's Chrome: a news feed.

Open the app and you are greeted with a page that is exactly like Chrome on mobile, with your most frequently visited sites followed by recent news about topics you are interested in.

Amazon also claims this is a private browser, but it's unclear how or why that is. The app still asks for permission to your photos/media/files, your memory storage, and full network access. Granted, it's not as intrusive as Chrome, but take the "private" tag with a pinch of salt as Amazon has some issues with privacy .

The browser is currently available only in India, but you can download and install the APK by sideloading it.

4. Samsung Internet Browser (Android): A Weird but Interesting Choice

Generally, our advice has been to replace Samsung apps with better alternatives . But in this one case, you should consider replacing your regular browser with the Samsung internet browser instead.

Samsung internet is a Chromium-based browser, so most features are what you'd get in Google Chrome. But use it once and you'll immediately notice the speed difference. Samsung internet feels much faster. It is also better at a lot of the things that you might find limiting in Chrome, like the download manager. And in a surprise move, the Samsung internet browser actually uses much less battery than Chrome too.

Finally, Samsung has done something that Chrome still hasn't: extensions. There isn't a huge number of extensions yet, but the ones that are there prove useful.

5. DuckDuckGo Privacy Browser (Android, iOS): Privacy First, Browsing Second

This is a time when everyone is worried about how much we are being tracked online. DuckDuckGo has made a name for itself as a privacy-focused search engine . Now it has new browsers to protect you while surfing the web.

By default, the DuckDuckGo Privacy Browser will ensure you are on an encrypted connection with the site, and it blocks common malicious trackers as well. Each website gets a privacy grade according to this, so you know if you're on a site that can compromise your data. At any point, you can tap the "Fire" logo to clear all your browsing data.

Apart from that, it's a simple web browser that offers everything that big browsers like Chrome have. If you want to know more, read about how DuckDuckGo's new apps keep you safe .

Apple to introduce new Safari browser assistant for iPhones with iOS 18

The upcoming ios 18 is poised to be the most significant advancement in iphone's evolution yet with a new safari browsing assistant being one of the key features..

Listen to Story

Safari

Interestingly, the hint at the integration of a browsing assistant in Safari is in line with ongoing speculations about new generative AI features slated for release on the iPhone with iOS 18. If it's true, the AI assistance will be similar to the feature. It's worth noting that AI capabilities are already present in several, such as Microsoft Edge, which includes a Copilot feature powered by GPT-4 and Arc Search.

In addition, lvarez spotted a function named "Encrypted Visual Search" in the code, but its specifics are still unclear.

Apart from the rumoured AI assistant improvements, iOS 18 is expected to bring several significant updates. We can anticipate AI integration across various iOS applications.

For example, Apple Music might curate personalised playlists based on your listening habits, while stock apps like Mail and Notes could gain AI-powered features for improved functionality. Siri, once sluggish, is set for a substantial upgrade with the integration of large language models (LLMs). This will transform it into a comprehensive "ultimate virtual assistant" with improved conversational capabilities and deeper Shortcuts integration.

iPhone users might finally be able to ditch the limitations of iMessage and enjoy features like enhanced video quality and read receipts when messaging Android users through rumoured RCS support. iOS 18 might also grant you more control over the home screen just like an Android phone. Speculations suggest the ability to create blank spaces and customise icon arrangements for a truly personalised experience.

Apple might introduce "Adaptive Voice Shortcuts" and potentially allow adjustable font sizes across more apps with iOS 18. The AirPods Pro could even gain functionality similar to hearing aids. Apple Maps might become more competitive with features like custom route planning and potentially the addition of topographic maps for outdoor enthusiasts.

While Apple hasn't officially confirmed which iPhones will support iOS 18, rumours suggest a wide range of devices, including many models from 2018 and later, could be eligible. This could potentially include the iPhone XS and XR, although that remains uncertain.

Apple details how superfast Safari upgrades help developers make web apps bigger and faster than ever before

Safari is now faster than ever.

Search in Safari on an iPhone

Apple might have finally agreed to allow things like game streaming apps into the App Store but there are still plenty of apps that are only available via web-based alternatives in Safari. Those apps need to be bigger and faster than ever before and making that possible means being at the forefront of web-based technology and performance. Safari has historically been pretty quick, especially on the iPhone, and now the team behind it has detailed some recent speed improvements.

Safari is based on the WebKit web browser engine and it's the WebKit team that has detailed some changes that have been made to the underlying technology to enable web developers to build the kinds of experiences that they wouldn't normally be able to do.

Specifically, the Apple WebKit team says that it has been able to improve performance by around 60% of late, although it did take multiple different updates to the Safari app over the course of months in order to make that happen. Regardless, the upshot is the same — Safari is now faster than ever, and that's good news for developers and users alike.

Faster than fast

According to the blog post on the WebKit website, the speed improvements were made thanks to the introduction of the Speedometer 3.0 benchmarking system which in turn allowed WebKit developers to get a better understanding of how its software performs.

Discussing the tool, the WebKit team said that "these tooling improvements allowed us to quickly identify bottlenecks" with those bottlenecks then giving the team something to aim for.

The blog post then continued to detail what Apple was able to do including building a "shared understanding of web performance so that improvements can be made to enhance the user experience."

So how successful was it? As it turns out, pretty successful. "With all these optimizations and dozens more, we were able to improve the overall Speedometer 3.0 score by ~60% between Safari 17.0 and Safari 17.4," the post explains. "Even though individual progressions were often less than 1%, over time, they all stacked up together to make a big difference." The post continued, adding that the team is " thrilled to deliver these performance improvements to our users allowing web developers to build websites and web apps that are more responsive and snappier than ever."

It's important to note that the improvements to performance when using Speedometer 3.0 don't just mean a better score for those running the tests, but rather real-world improvements that users of web apps across the world — and across Apple's platforms — can expect to be of benefit when running real apps.

It's also worth noting that outside the EU, all web browsers available for download via the best iPhone and iPad App Stores use the same WebKit browser engine at their core. That should ensure that these speed improvements will also benefit those who use other browsers on their devices, no matter which company makes them.

The best secure browsers to protect your privacy online in 2024

charlie-osborne

Web browsers have become flooded with ad-sponsored content, making browsers a key battleground for end-user privacy. While Chrome is the most widely used browser in the world, there are alternative browsers and ways to improve your security available to help you stay anonymous online.

Data is one of today's key ingredients for generating revenue. Online advertising companies can use web browsing histories to fingerprint individual browsers over time, creating shadow user profiles to reveal information including a user's interests, product searches, and more -- which can lead to targeted advertising. When you look for a privacy-focused browser, you will want to investigate how advertising trackers and cookies are managed, whether or not search histories are stored or shared, and whether or not the browser developer has a transparent privacy policy in place.

Also:   The best VPN services (and why you need one to protect your privacy)

What is the best secure browser for privacy in 2024?

ZDNET experts have kept a finger on the pulse of the secure browser market for decades and many of us have tried and tested different options throughout the years. Brave is our top pick for the best browser for privacy based on its approach to user privacy, ad tracking prevention, privacy settings, usability, and speed.

Below, you will find other recommendations for secure browsers that can protect your privacy -- not only from cyberattacks, but also from businesses that scrape, store, and sell your data.

Best secure browsers for privacy in 2024

Best browser for privacy overall.

  • Not in the traditional online ad business
  • Privacy-focused by default
  • Chromium challenger
  • Some users report compute resource issues

Brave f eatures: Chromium-based | Blocks third-party ad trackers | Blocks cookies | Incognito windows | Onion routing | VPN | Off the record browsing

Brave is a Chromium-based browser that blocks ads, fingerprinting, and ad trackers by default.

Brave supports millions of users worldwide. The organization's business model relies on privacy-protecting ads that pay publishers and users when users pay attention to ads. The company is transparent about this revenue stream, and it is optional -- with users rewarded in crypto tokens if they opt in to ad viewing.

Brave has several privacy-enhancing settings, including options to block third-party ad trackers, upgrade unsecured connections to HTTPS, as well as block cookies and fingerprinting. Invasive ads and trackers are disabled, which the company says then improves loading times on desktop and mobile.

Also: The best web hosting services for building your dream website

Brave  removed Google code  from its Chromium to improve user privacy, including some account integration, background sync, and inline extensions. There is also a "Tor mode" available for use, which provides anonymized onion network routing.

The browser developer also offers a VPN and firewall service which protects sessions even outside of the browser. Many users say the browser exceeds expectations, although others find some functionality, such as VPN connectivity, could use improvement.

Brave also offers a feature called " Off the Record " (OTR) for users who may be victims of intimate partner violence. The browser developer says the feature "aims to help people who need to hide their browsing behavior from others who have access to their computer or phone."

Mozilla Firefox

Most secure browser for tracking protection.

  • Enhanced tracking prevention
  • Focus on accessibility
  • Trusted by millions of users
  • Strict tracking protection may break websites
  • May require heavy PC resources

Mozilla Firefox f eatures: Enhanced tracking protection | Firefox Focus for mobile | Strict privacy standards |   DNS queries sent to a secure resolver service | Focus on accessibility | Encrypted Client Hello

Firefox is a must-have for individual browser privacy across multiple devices.

One of Firefox's most important privacy features is enhanced tracking protection. Mozilla has borrowed Tor techniques to block browser fingerprinting, and Firefox developers are constantly seeking to improve tracking-prevention features.

Firefox is rich with choices to customize the browser for privacy. It blocks social media trackers, cross-site tracking cookies, tracking in private windows, crypto miners, and fingerprinting scripts. There is a "strict" mode, too, that might break some sites when trackers are hidden in content -- but there are ways to allow enhanced tracking protection for trusted sites. Furthermore, a recent improvement is the introduction of Encrypted Client Hello (ECH).

Users enjoy Firefox's privacy focus but note that it can be a resource hog.

The other option for Firefox fans is Firefox Focus , a privacy-focused browser for iOS and Android that blocks trackers and has a built-in ad blocker.

Mozilla also offers a VPN , with the option to connect up to five devices to over 500 servers in 30 countries.

The Tor browser

Best for anonymous browsing.

  • High levels of anonymity
  • DuckDuckGo integration
  • Constant updates and improvements
  • Learning curve to use
  • Can be slow

The Tor browser f eatures : Onion routing | DuckDuckGo integration | Access to websites outside of the clear web

Another great choice for improving your privacy on the web is the Tor browser, a non-profit project focused on anonymizing users online.

Its proprietary web browser disguises a user's IP address and activity by relaying it through a network of servers (nodes) run by volunteers. Bouncing your information around makes it exceptionally difficult to track, which is great if you don't want your ISP or anyone else spying on your online activity.

Tor can be a crucial tool for whistleblowers, journalists, activists, and people avoiding censorship. The Tor browser is also a popular choice for accessing the deep web: A collection of websites and pages that are inaccessible through traditional means, like search engines, in what is known as the "clear" web.

Also:  How to use Tor browser (and why you should)

The Tor browser's default search engine is DuckDuckGo, which will not log or store your search queries.

While it isn't a mainstream choice, the Tor browser is a well-regarded browser for people who don't want to be tracked across the web, and it gets updated frequently by  the Tor Project . Users applaud the network's tough approach to privacy but note slow speeds and occasional problems with Captchas.

Page loads in the Tor browser can be slower and some sites might not work well due to the architecture of the Tor network. Nonetheless, the Tor browser is a privacy-preserving browser worthy of consideration.

Best browser for private searches

  • Available across different operating systems
  • Solid commitment to user privacy
  • Email protection settings
  • Bland browser design

DuckDuckGo f eatures: Chrome and Firefox supported | Mobile and desktop private browser | Does not collect user data | AI experiments | No search engine query trackers

When it comes to DuckDuckGo, user privacy comes first.

The privacy-focused search engine and browser is a vocal supporter of consumer privacy rights and now handles millions of user search queries daily.

There is a growing appetite for privacy-focused alternatives to tech giants like Facebook and Google. DuckDuckGo's Privacy Essentials extension for Chrome , Firefox , and Microsoft's Edge  has also proven popular. Its reputation is built on the idea that it does not collect user data but can provide the same search results as those that do.

DuckDuckGo used to be a search engine rather than a full browser, but then released a mobile-friendly browser app and, now, a desktop version. The organization's browser provides a private search, website protection and blockers, web encryption, and more.

DuckDuckGo is experimenting with AI-assisted technologies to improve the search experience and has recently upgraded its browser . Users appreciate the firm's privacy focus, although some complain of censorship -- a concept DuckDuckGo staunchly denies .

Mullvad Browser

Best for use with a vpn.

  • Two heavyweight privacy developers
  • Fingerprint, tracker blocks
  • Tor-based privacy features
  • New, so less thoroughly tested

Mullvad Browser f eatures : Fingerprint masking approach | Removes online identifiers | Private mode enabled by default | Blocks trackers, cookies

Mullvad is a relatively new entry to the secure browser market.

Not to be confused with the Tor browser, the Mullvad Browser is marketed as the "Tor Browser without the Tor network." The browser is built by the Tor Project team and distributed by Mullvad, a respected Swedish virtual private network provider.

The idea behind the browser is to emulate the Tor network by creating a similar fingerprint for all users, improving anonymity. Furthermore, the browser comes with a private mode out of the box, tracking and cookies are blocked, and online functions used to extract information from visitors -- such as device identifiers -- are prevented.

You can use the browser as a standalone product, or you can combine it with Mullvad VPN . Users have given generally positive reviews, although you may find yourself signing up for the VPN for the best setup -- and it's not the cheapest on the market.

However, you should keep in mind that Mullvad was  subject to a search warrant by the National Operations Department (NOA) of the Swedish Police in 2023. Mullvad staff said that as the customer data did not exist, law enforcement was left with nothing (and no customer information).

What is the best browser for privacy?

Brave is our top pick for the best browser for privacy based on its approach to user privacy, ad tracking prevention, the wide range of privacy settings on offer, usability, and speed. However, no browser is perfect, so you must decide which option suits you best.

Which is the right browser for privacy for you?

Not one size fits all, so be sure to reference the table below to better understand which browser suits your use case.

Factors to consider when choosing a secure browser

When you are switching to a more secure browser, there are some important factors to consider:

  • Online identifiers : You should check to see if the browser tracks any of your activities, visits, or search queries. This data can be used to create profiles for targeted advertising and may be used to track you across different websites.
  • Audits : The best secure browsers will conduct frequent security audits and have consistent patch releases to fix vulnerabilities and bugs that could expose users to risk.
  • Speed vs. security : Some browsers will route your traffic through a number of servers to vastly reduce the likelihood of you being tracked. However, you will need to decide how slow you're willing the connections and browsing to be.
  • VPN : If you want to use a VPN, consider whether or not the browser works well with one -- or if the browser offers a built-in solution.

How did we choose these browsers for privacy?

While investigating the best browsers for privacy in 2024, we compared each of these browsers and extensions to determine what makes them different and which is best for different use cases.

  • Balance : The balance between managing user privacy and funding a business can be a tricky one for companies to manage, but as we've shown, many developers are willing to wave the security flag on behalf of users over potential opportunities to generate more revenue.
  • User experience : We reviewed customer feedback to ensure that the majority of users find the browsers easy to install and use.
  • Features : We like to see additional privacy-enhancing features, like onion routing. We chose providers who offer more than standard browsing experiences.
  • Platform support : We selected browsers offering a range of support for different operating systems and platforms, as well as mobile coverage.

How does a privacy browser work?

A privacy browser works by automatically erasing your browsing and search history and cookies. It also may limit web tracking, and some even help hide your location (IP address). Privacy-focused browsers may also promote virtual private network (VPN) usage and may include features designed to bypass censorship blocks and keep users as anonymous as possible, such as access to onion routing and refusing to log site visits or web searches.

Do I need a privacy browser?

If you are concerned about your online privacy, you should install a privacy browser or at least an extension. We have to take responsibility for our own privacy online these days, and you can't rely on companies to do the job for you.

Also:  How to delete yourself from internet search results and hide your identity online

We can recommend a few basic steps to take: Download one of the privacy-first browsers listed above that doesn't log your queries and activities, install a VPN, and use messaging apps with end-to-end encryption.

Does using a private browsing window hide my IP address?

If you're using Chrome, an incognito window doesn't hide your IP address. It simply doesn't store your browser history, information you've entered into forms, or what permissions you've given to sites you've visited. Microsoft Edge, Firefox, and Opera all use a similar form of "anonymous" web window for browsing, but they aren't truly hiding your online identity.

Also:   The best VPN services (and whether it's worth trying free VPNs)

If you want to block your IP address from being viewed or tracked, you can download a VPN , which masks your IP address so your service provider (or anyone else, for that matter) can't see what you're doing.

What is the most common personal web security risk?

Honestly? Putting your personal or contact information on social media. If you have your full name, phone number, address, or place of work anywhere on your social media, someone can use it to wreak havoc on your personal accounts.

To prevent this, avoid using your real name online where possible, turn off location tracking, and don't post about your place of work if you can help it. All it takes is a single piece of personal information for someone with very bad intentions to get ahold of your entire online presence -- and so if you're posting photos of you away from home and on holiday, for example, you're letting people know your home is vulnerable.

Also:  The best security keys

Those innocent-looking name generator memes are another big issue; the ones that have you type out your first pet's name and your childhood street name (or something similar) to make up a gnome (or whatever) name. These are answers to common password recovery questions, so by letting the world know that your Christmas elf name is Fluffy Elm Street, you could be handing over all of your personal accounts to internet criminals.

Are there other browsers worth considering?

Online privacy and security are hot topics today. The amount of data quietly collected on each and every one of us is staggering -- and beyond targeted advertisements, you may not realize it.

The browsers we've recommended above can help tighten up your defenses against tracking and online monitoring, but as no browser is a perfect solution, you may also want to consider the alternatives below:

Third-party growth in the EU proves iPhone browser choice should come to the US

latest safari browser for android

If you buy through a BGR link, we may earn an affiliate commission, helping support our expert product labs.

Consumer choice is important and, while it’s easy to search through the App Store and find a browser that isn’t the built-in Safari app, it feels like you should be presented with all of the options when you’re setting up your iPhone or Android phone, right?

The Digital Markets Act took effect on March 7th and, one month later, third-party browser growth is surging in the European Union. As reported by Reuters , the Cyprus-based Aloha, one of the third-party browsers now featured when setting up an iPhone, said users in the EU jumped 250% in March. Aloha CEO Andrew Frost Moroz said in an interview “Before, EU was our number four market, right now it’s number two.”

DuckDuckGo, Opera, Vivaldi, Ecosia, and Brave have all also reported accelerated user growth for their browsers since the Digital Markets Act went into effect last month. Jan Standal, vice president at Opera, said in a statement “We are experiencing record user numbers in the EU right now.”

Browser choice needs to come to the United States

I’m not saying the current implementation is perfect. As the report explains, “On iPhones, users can see the choice screen only when they click Safari, and then users are shown a list of browsers with no additional information,” said Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner, CEO of Norway’s Vivaldi. “The process is just so convoluted that it’s easiest for (users) to select Safari or potentially some other known name.”

Mozilla, which owns Firefox browser, estimates that only 19% of iPhone users in the region received an update in a roll-out that appeared much slower than previous software updates, the company said.

Despite those issues, third-party browsers are still experiencing growth — and record growth, in some cases. The EU has proven that these kinds of options need to exist for everyone, whether they live in the EU or not. And that choice needs to extend beyond browsers — search engines, voice assistants, and many more should be choices that consumers are educated on to make informed decisions.

I hope that this is just the start of something much bigger and more widespread.
