Bigger budget, more staff, and increased testing: inside Lidl-Trek's transformation into a super team

By 2028 the American team wants to win one of cycling's three Grand Tours, and be firmly among the sport's leading elite

Lidl-Trek

The talk is big, the grandest it could be, but are Lidl-Trek walking the walk? Are the American team really set on becoming the undisputed best men’s and women’s team in cycling?

Last June, European supermarket giant Lidl invested a significant amount into the team, increasing their annual budget to around €40m - placing them among the richest outfits in the sport.

Revolutions don’t happen overnight, but the plan from the outset was unambiguous: within five years, they would become the men’s and women’s number one ranked UCI team, and win a men’s Grand Tour.

If the task for the men’s team is daunting - not least because of the presence of UAE-Team Emirates and Visma-Lease a Bike, but also because of the team’s current forte being the Classics - then the challenge for the women’s outfit is also complicated, with the all-conquering SD Worx in their way.

2024 has started positively, though, with 19 victories shared between the teams, and Mads Pedersen, new signing Jonathan Milan, Elisa Balsamo and Ellen van Dijk all regularly winning.

So what have been the changes behind the scenes in the nine months since Lidl came on board? “ We’ve been able to sign a lot of good riders , leaders like Tao [Geoghegan Hart] and [Jonathan] Milan, as well as other strong guys, so that’s an improvement,” says Bauke Mollema, a rider with the team since 2015.

“There’s also been an investment in more coaches, data analysts, and nutritionists, a desire to try to improve everything because those marginal gains are so important these days.”

Previously, the team’s coaching department did all the data analysis, but now they have specialists in place who have been pivotal in more riders spending more time in the wind tunnel and working on aerodynamic improvements on the track. There has also been a recruitment drive in other departments, including two new chefs, as well as a new 14-rider men’s development team.

“The team’s goals are bigger, and what the team has done really well is to get everybody on board with that goal really quickly,” says Amy Cameron, a team press officer. “You can feel like everyone is wanting and trying to step up.”

Lidl-Trek

Despite the new flow of cash, developing meaningfully but steadily is the plan, according to lead sports director Steven De Jongh. “We have more budget now so it makes things easier,” he says.

“But what’s been good is that we’ve kept our DNA. Ok, we’ve hired a lot of people, but at the winter training camps it still felt like it was us, Trek, and that’s a good sign.

“You can choose to grow explosively, hire people straight away, but it’s better to do it step by step. The culture we have is really good and we should take care of that. We have this sponsorship now and we have time to grow towards the goals in a good way. We’re now in the transition of becoming a GC team - it’s just a matter of time.”

Lidl-Trek

Key to making the partnership work is a close working relationship between Lidl and the team, and Cameron says that “there is a constant back and forth between Lidl, Trek and the team. It’s a real partnership, everyone is fully invested."

She adds: "We did store visits before the team’s launch in Bilbao, and again before the Vuelta last year. At Milan-Sanremo, in La Gazzetta dello Sport, there were Lidl adverts with our riders in their stores, so you can see that we’re part of their marketing as well. We are a tool for them just as much as they are a tool for us.”

The team have high hopes in the current spring Classics , principally through Pedersen, Balsamo and Elisa Longo Borghini, but once full attention turns back to multi-day racing, there is one clear mission. “To fight with the biggest teams in the world,” says Mollema. “Visma and UAE are ahead right now, but our goal is to be the number one team in the coming years.”

Lidl-Trek sends strong signal leading up to Tour of Flanders: "Not afraid of Van der Poel and Van Aert"

S eventh in Omloop Het Nieuwsblad (Jasper Stuyven), second in Strade Bianche (Toms Skujins), fourth in Milan-San Remo ( Mads Pedersen), fifth in the Classic Brugge-De Panne (Simone Consonni), second in the E3 Saxo Classic (Stuyven) and victory in Gent-Wevelgem (Pedersen). The classics project of Lidl-Trek has so far been a tremendous success, especially since those results were achieved with various key players. Particularly noteworthy was the way Pedersen won in Wevelgem. IDLProCycling.com spoke about it with team director Grégory Rast!

After an extremely entertaining race, Pedersen managed to win in a sprint-à-deux against Mathieu van der Poel. The world champion made the race a pleasure to watch, but eventually had to admit defeat in a long sprint against the fast Danish rider. "It was grueling. I definitely carried a bit of Friday's race into today. But Mads participated in that race too, so it's no excuse. The strongest rider simply won today," MVDP commented sportingly after the race.

Offensive racing earned Pedersen sprint victory against Van der Poel

Lidl-Trek also made their presence known throughout the day, with their numerical advantage in an elite group - which had formed after a strong wind passage in De Moeren - being especially notable. Indeed, alongside Pedersen, Jasper Stuyven and Jonathan Milan were also working hard for the American WorldTour team. From this leading group, Lidl-Trek aimed to make things as difficult as possible for Van der Poel. "We tried to push Mathieu to his limit," the eventual winner shared.

"Was this the plan? We definitely wanted to race aggressively. Actually, we had agreed that we wanted to race offensively starting from the first ascent of the Kemmelberg. To do that, we had to be at the front. However, we might have expected the race to be a bit tougher. More groups, a bigger battlefield," explains the 44-year-old Rast, who himself competed for what is now Lidl-Trek for many years. "Sometimes we thought that the large group might come back. However, we made sure to keep racing offensively, which meant Mathieu had to do a lot of work. As a result, Mads could win the sprint, since Mathieu had a few less watts left in the tank. This is really a victory for the team, because everyone contributed in some way."

Rast was not surprised by Pedersen's strength

And so, logically, Rast is full of compliments about what his protégés have done this weekend. "I am happy with the way we rode. It was aggressive and thus according to plan, although I did not see Jonathan's solo attempt coming. That was a bit of a surprise in the team car, haha! However, it worked out well since our competitors had to do a lot of work, and Mads was able to save more energy and rest. That definitely helped him in the sprint."

When we ask Rast whether he was surprised by Pedersen's level, his answer is clear. "Certainly not. We knew he is in good form and prefers the longer races. More than the shorter races, where the climbs are much quicker in succession." And so, the follow-up question is naturally about the Tour of Flanders, where we seem to have a new top favorite. "In the Tour of Flanders, the hills are even a bit tougher. Mathieu and Wout might have a slight advantage there. Mads will have to anticipate. He will definitely do that. However, we are optimistic about the Tour of Flanders. This result shows that he is ready for it. He has already finished third there, so that gives us hope," says the Swiss.

Pedersen is not afraid of Van der Poel or Van Aert

"Did Mads get a mental boost from this? Maybe," we continue to chat about the 28-year-old golden boy. "But Mads is definitely not afraid of Mathieu or Wout. Never. Mentally, Mads was completely ready for this race in particular. Together with Paris-Roubaix, this is the race that suits him best."

The victory in Gent-Wevelgem is certainly highly valued at Lidl-Trek. "It ranks high on the list. We know that the shorter classics don't really suit Mads. He is more suited for this kind of racing work. Here in Gent-Wevelgem, he is now winning for the second time and has proven his class in races like this. He is really very focused on these races, so it's definitely also a mental thing," the affable team director shares with us in conclusion.

Pedersen, too, faced In the Leader's Jersey among others, elaborated on the coming week, which is, after all, a bit of a course of truth. 'Flanders is a different course. I still think Gent-Wevelgem suits me better. The condition is nevertheless very good,' Pedersen sounded mostly positive. 'Last year I did finish third in the Ronde, but I was far from victory.' Pedersen also does not rule out a served role in Vlaanderens Mooiste in advance. 'We can always do that, too. We ride as one team and as one block. We like to fight for each other. With such a strong group, we don't have one specific leader. After all, an awful lot can happen too. The team pays my salary, so I will definitely do what they ask me to do.'

Hoole talks about team spirit at Lidl-Trek: "Jasper and Mads at their best level ever"

Daan Hoole, who also rode a significant part of the important spring classics, also speaks of a perfect team spirit at Lidl-Trek. "We're on a super good vibe. In the first echelon, there was immediately three of us. That's really nice," he says in an interview with NOS . "Behind that, we also had four other guys. So when everyone came back together, those guys could also do their job."

"The team spirit has been there for a long time. It just didn't always fall into place," continues the 25-year-old Dutchman. "In my opinion, Jasper and Mads are both at their best level ever. And then, of course, we also have Jonathan. In short, a tremendously strong team. This is absolutely the way to tackle the Tour of Flanders. But then there will be more hills. and they are closer together. Yet, the Tour of Flanders is better for us than, for example, the E3, since that's even shorter. That's really intense. Flanders is a longer race, and that's to our advantage," he confirms what his team director told this website.

Lidl-Trek Team Talk: Consistency was rewarded but is there more to come?

In a season when most squads struggled to complete against the super teams, Lidl-Trek found a way to thrive

Lidl-Trek recorded their highest ever win tally in 2023

American men's team Lidl-Trek , formerly Trek-Segafredo at the outset of 2023, are an outfit that specialise in consistency and balance. Their squad is as rounded as they come, designed to challenge on as many fronts as possible. Against the increasingly powerful super teams who dominate the sport, it is probably a wise approach that helps to spread out wins, and it has paid dividends over recent seasons through a consistent year-on-year win return.

Continuing this trend in 2023 was always going to be difficult, but post-season reflection highlights the sheer scale of the challenge. Jumbo-Visma exerted a vice-like stranglehold over the Grand Tours and stage races, while UAE Team Emirates and Alpecin-Deceuninck reduced the Monuments to a two-team battle.

That left little room for anyone else to thrive, stifling even established top-tier teams like Ineos Grenadiers. Admirably, Lidl-Trek emerged from the season with their record of consistency intact, but more importantly still, with the best win tally in their history. They’ve shot up to fifth in the UCI rankings as a result.

Much of this success was driven by tried-and-tested riders like Mads Pedersen and Giulio Ciccone , and then added to by rising stars Mattias Skjelmose and Thibau Nys . The question is, can they use this talent – along with the fresh investment from their new sponsorship – to build on 2023 and cement their position in the top third of the UCI rankings?

GCN ’s 2023 review

On paper, Lidl-Trek had the best season in their history in 2023, amassing 27 victories to edge out their 26 in 2011, the previous biggest haul. That’s impressive, although eight of those did come at national championships. Whether you believe they should count towards the win tally or not, victories at nationals come with a significant amount of UCI points, which, in these times of three-year relegation cycles, are a welcome boost to anyone’s tally.

Beyond the national championships, stages races proved to be the happiest of hunting grounds for the team. Quinn Simmons got the team off to a flying start with a stage victory at the Vuelta a San Juan in January, and things never slowed down from there. Only April, September and October failed to deliver any wins at stage races, at times of the year when one-day races take precedence.

Chief protagonist, as is often the case, was Mads Pedersen who has developed a healthy knack for triumphing in Grand Tours. His Grand Tour win tally for 2023 ended on two, starting out with victory on stage 6 of the Giro d'Italia, before he edged out Jasper Philipsen in a sprint at the Tour de France.

Mads Pedersen won stage 8 of the Tour de France

Those were Lidl-Trek’s only Grand Tour wins in 2023, but they were supplemented by Pedersen and his teammates at stage races throughout the season, most notably at the Tour de Suisse where Mattias Skjelmose triumphed in the general classification. That proved to be a high point for the 23-year-old in a season that returned seven wins, while Giulio Ciccone added three extra victories, including on stage 8 of the Critérium du Dauphiné, plus the best climber's jersey at the Tour de France. Both riders have fully taken on the mantle from Bauke Mollema , whose results waned in 2023.

In the Classics, the team didn’t fare quite as well, at least as far as wins are concerned. It wasn’t a season devoid of Classics success, but the only three came at smaller one-day races, including the Grand Prix of Aargau Canton, BEMER Cyclassics and Maryland Cycling Classic. Victories at larger races proved to be more elusive, but a closer look at results sheets repeatedly throws up Pedersen’s name in the top placings.

The Dane had arguably his best Classics season to date, finishing in the top five throughout the major races, including third at the Tour of Flanders and fourth at Paris-Roubaix. Considering the might of Mathieu van der Poel and Tadej Pogačar during this period, with the talent of Wout van Aert added into the mix, that seems like a fair return. Pedersen also had to take on more of the burden as Jasper Stuyven struggled to deliver the top-10 finishes we've become accustomed to.

Giulio Ciccone won the mountains classification at the Tour de France

Giulio Ciccone won the mountains classification at the Tour de France

Dig a little deeper beyond Lidl-Trek’s wins and Pedersen’s Classics consistency was replicated by the whole team throughout the season. Telling a tale of consistency and strength in depth, this delivered 217 top-10 finishes, putting them in the ballpark of Ineos Grenadiers, Jumbo-Visma and Soudal Quick-Step. Only UAE Team Emirates completely outshone the rest, surpassing 300, which goes some way to explaining how they topped the UCI rankings, beyond the obvious Pogačar factor. Lidl-Trek also ranked sixth for top-three finishes.

Plenty of encouragement can be drawn from this, not least because it means that they’re constantly in the mix at races. It’s also rewarded with lots of UCI points and Lidl-Trek already find themselves far beyond the worries of a relegation battle. It would always have taken a disastrous few years for them to ever have found themselves in such a situation, but now they have the space to breathe and focus on maintaining and building on their consistency over the next few years, which is arguably their biggest victory of all.

GCN’s rating: 8/10

With a record win tally, consistent top-three finishes, and a sharp rise up the UCI rankings, the only thing missing from Lidl-Trek’s season was a big win in the Classics.

Ins & outs.

Sometimes a team’s revolving door can rotate without a clear strategy, but that can’t be said for Lidl-Trek, who have added to their already strong stage-racing potential with a plethora of multi-day talent.

Headlining the influx of new riders is Tao Geoghegan Hart who arrives from Ineos Grenadiers with strong Grand Tour pedigree, having won the Giro d’Italia in 2020. For all of their stage wins, Lidl-Trek have struggled to challenge for the overall podium at cycling’s 21-day races and they’ll hope that the Brit can change this trend. That will be dependent on Geoghegan Hart reigniting his 2020 form, having endured a torrid time at Grand Tours since taking his Giro victory. There were sparks of potential, verging on fireworks, in 2023 as the Brit podiumed at a succession of stage races before winning the Tour of the Alps, but his season was ultimately curtailed after a bad crash at the Giro.

Can Tao Geoghegan Hart rediscover his form after fracturing his hip at the Giro d'Italia?

Can Tao Geoghegan Hart rediscover his form after fracturing his hip at the Giro d'Italia?

Alongside Geoghegan Hart, Lidl-Trek have also bolstered their stage racing core through the arrivals of Patrick Konrad from Bora-Hansgrohe, Carlos Verona from Movistar and Sam Oomen from Jumbo-Visma. All three are valuable domestiques and strong climbers within their own right, and will strengthen the team’s roster. The team can also now call upon arguably the best rouleur in the business in the form of Tim Declercq , who will at least ensure that Lidl-Trek’s jersey will get good coverage on the front of the peloton.

In terms of wins, the arrival of Jonathan Milan could be their biggest coup. Still only 23, the Italian has bags of potential and has already proven that he can mix it in Grand Tour sprints, winning a stage at the Giro d’Italia in 2023. He’ll be joined by another young Italian, Andrea Bagioli , who shone at the Autumn Italian Classics, finishing second at Il Lombardia after winning Gran Piemonte.

It’s a strong transfer window for Lidl-Trek, made more impressive as the team have retained their best riders for 2024. Among the most notable departees, Kenny Elissonde and Tony Gallopin ’s experience will be missed, while Filippo Baroncini takes a wealth of talent with him to UAE Team Emirates.

Where Lidl-Trek’s wins will come in 2024

As always, Lidl-Trek should be able to challenge on multiple fronts in 2024. Mads Pedersen will hope to at least be an ever-present in the top five at the major Classics, although the Dane arguably needs to add wins to that consistency. Even if a Classics victory remains elusive, he’s almost guaranteed a stage win at a Grand Tour, and usually supplements that at other stage races throughout the season.

Mattias Skjelmose Jensen will hope to add to his nine career victories in 2024

Mattias Skjelmose Jensen will hope to add to his nine career victories in 2024

Aiding the Dane in this stage racing quest will be Giulio Ciccone and Mattias Skjelmose, who shouldered their GC ambitions in 2023. Skjelmose was the more successful of the two, winning the Tour de Suisse, and is their best bet for more overall victories, while Ciccone’s wins have been rarer.

The duo will be able to share stage race responsibilities with Tao Geoghegan Hart, who adds another option to the team’s burgeoning stage race roster. 2023 showed that, with unhindered preparation, the Brit can mix it with the best, but question marks still remain over his full and true potential.

Thibau Nys and the newly arrived Jonathan Milan provide sprinting talent, as well as more Classics ability in the case of the former. If Andrea Bagioli can replicate his late-season form for his new team, the Italian could also start racking up wins.

Able to rely on so many different avenues, the American outfit are well prepared to match their 2023 exploits.

Lidl-Trek’s next breakout rider

Mattias Skjelmose, Jonathan Milan, Andrea Bagioli, Quinn Simmons… Lidl-Trek’s squad is littered with talented young riders who have proven their ability at World Tour races.

Picking a breakout rider is difficult, but we’re going to highlight Thibau Nys. It’s a slightly easy pick, especially considering his flying start to the cyclo-cross season, but the Belgian is the joint youngest rider in the team’s squad and is yet to fully prove himself in WorldTour races on the road.

Thibau Nys has been one of the stars of the cyclo-cross season so far

Thibau Nys has been one of the stars of the cyclo-cross season so far

There have been glimpses of his undoubted potential, not least at the Baloise Belgium Tour where he finished second behind Mathieu van der Poel on a Classics-esque stage 4. He followed it up the day after with a third-place finish in the sprint behind Fabio Jakobsen and Jasper Philipsen. Over those two days, Nys rubbed shoulders with the best riders in the world, while highlighting his versatility at the same time.

Considering his year-on-year improvements in cyclocross, we’d expect the young Belgian to show further improvements in 2024 and to build on his two pro road victories, both taken in 2023.

Team presentation 2024: Lidl – Trek climbs to the next level

Filed Under: cycling news , road cycling Tagged With: Lidl-Trek , News , team introduction , Team presentation 2024 , Trek Segafredo

18 December 2023 by Michael Behringer Leave a Comment

Cycling: Trek – Segafredo became the Lidl – Trek team over the course of last season. In 2024 the name will stay the same, but the squad will change a lot. Despite a good 23 season, the American team is now moving to the next level of development.

Lidl – Trek lands on the podium 83 times

With 27 wins this season and 56 additional podium finishes, the American team Lidl – Trek can be very satisfied with the 2023 season. Especially the development of Mattias Skjelmose needs to be highlighted. The Dane won seven races, including the overall Tour de Suisse and the national championship. Once again, his fellow countryman ensured the team's greatest successes Mads Pedersen. Among his seven victories this season, the stage victories at Paris – Nice, the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France should be mentioned. He also won the Bemer Cyclassics in Hamburg. However, when it came to their ambitions in the overall ranking of a Grand Tour, the professionals from Lidl-Trek were not completely convincing. Julius Ciccone However, he set his sights on the mountain jersey at the Tour de France and was allowed to wear it all the way to Paris.

2024: A clear winner of the transfer phase

Many teams have significantly rebuilt their roster for the 2024 season. But with no team can we speak of such a clear improvement as with Lidl - Trek. The American team gave up, among other things Antwan Tolhoek, Emils Liepins, Kenny Elissonde and Tony Gallopin. Well-known professionals, but they haven't really provided any tangible success for a long time. Of the many top drivers that the team already had in the 2023 squad, not a single one was given away. Instead, Lidl – Trek has strengthened itself again for 2024.

Lidl – Trek has a bright future

With Tao Geoghegan Hart A former Giro winner joins the team, who also competed for overall victory in 2023 - until he fell. In addition to the Brit, we can be particularly proud of the Italian's commitment jonathan milan be. The sprinter made his breakthrough this season. He is now one of the fastest men in the peloton. Tim Declercq and Andrea Bagioli change from Soudal – Quick-Step to Lidl – Trek. While the Belgian is one of the toughest pacers in cycling, the Italian is one of the rising stars of the year. Both professionals will strengthen the American team enormously, especially on flat and hilly terrain. Also Patrick Conrad can be called reinforcement. The Austrian feels comfortable in the mountains and will be an important helper for Ciccone and Geoghegan Hart, among others - just like the Spaniard Charles Verona and the Dutchman Sam Omen. The list of additions is completed by the South African Ryan Gibbons and the two Italians Fabio Fellina and Simone Consonni. They have also already made a name for themselves in the cycling circus. They are fast at the end and can handle one or two hills well before a sprint finale. This makes them the perfect complement to Mads Pedersen. All in all, the transfer period for Lidl – Trek must be described as extremely successful.

Lidl-Trek establishes development team, announcing first 8 riders

lidl trek team car

Markel Irizar is heading up the initiative to develop Lidl-Trek's next-gen stars

Lidl-Trek has undergone a seismic shift in the last month and a half, bringing on Lidl as a new sponsor, and along with it new kits, a new name and even greater ambitions in the WorldTour.

But beneath the surface, the operation isn’t changing much. The same world-class performance management team will oversee a strong and balanced group of men’s and women’s riders, and the team will still build around a culture of camaraderie and development. If anything, the team is doubling down on what has made it successful for years.

Today, Lidl-Trek is announcing the first eight riders to take part in its newly-established development team, with more riders to be announced at a later date. Those eight riders are:

  • Tim Torn Teutenberg (Germany, 20 years old)
  • Mats Wenzel (Luxembourg, 20 years old)
  • Axandre Van Petegem (Belgium, 21 years old)
  • Kristian Egholm (Denmark, 19 years old)
  • Nils Aebersold (Switzerland, 20 years old)
  • Louis Leidert (Germany, 18 years old)
  • Liam O’Brien (Ireland, 18 years old)
  • Patrick Frydkjaer (Denmark, 18 years old)

The development team was one of the road program’s biggest priorities after Lidl became its new partner. The devo team will allow Lidl-Trek to bring in some of the most promising young riders in the world and raise them under a patient, guiding hand at second- and third-tier events. In turn, when those riders are ready for their WorldTour call-ups, they will have already spent plenty of time among their big-name teammates and sports directors to slide into the faster peloton relatively seamlessly.

The team will be registered at Continental level and will be based in Deinze, Belgium, where the Trek Factory Racing service course is located. And accommodations will be made for the young riders, including an option to stay at an apartment in Girona, Spain, where they can enjoy pristine training roads.

The devo team will be managed by Markel Irizar, who has headed up Lidl-Trek’s talent scouting operation since retiring as a rider in 2019. He will be in charge of recruiting and signing young riders to the squad, as well as overseeing their mentorship and performance. The new role is a major promotion for Irizar, and highlights the incredible confidence Lidl-Trek leadership has in his abilities.

lidl trek team car

Markel Irizar entertaining the crowd in Basque Country at the Tour de France.

The devo team will fundamentally change Irizar’s role with Lidl-Trek. Before, if he wanted to sign a young rider he had scouted, he had to be very sure that they were ready to step directly into the WorldTour, both physically and mentally. With the devo squad, he’ll be under less pressure to bring in polished prospects. Instead, he’ll be able to take in riders who may require significant training and guidance, but who have incredible potential if all goes right.

Irizar explains his role as any good Basque native should: Through cooking.

“In the Basque Country, we have a big cooking culture. Very big,” Irizar says. “In this case, I know that we have very good chefs. A very good kitchen. My job is to go to the market, and I buy very good fish. And if I am able to buy the best meat, I know that my chefs, they’re gonna make something amazing.”

I'm gonna be the chain between the devo team and the World Tour team. ... We need to have the resources that the team will need in the future. - Markel Irizar

The devo team will help Lidl-Trek make sure it can sustain success well into the future. It currently has a solid core of young WorldTour riders like Mads Pedersen (27 years old), Giulio Ciccone (28) and Mattias Skjelmose (22), who were all developed within the program. But the devo team will make sure there’s depth behind them as those riders age, or in case the team finds itself deficient in any area due to unforeseen circumstances like injuries.

Wherever there’s a hole in the WorldTour roster, the hope is that there will be a devo team rider ready to fill it.

“I’m gonna be the chain between the devo team and the World Tour team,” Irizar explains. “If [Lidl-Trek general manager] Luca [Guercilena] tells me, ‘Markel, do we have a super good climber?’ I can say, ‘We have it.’ If he says ‘I need someone who can pull, do you have a strong rider with 80 kilos who can pull for five hours?’ I can say, ‘We have it.’ We need to have the resources that the team will need in the future.”

Irizar is well-suited to lead the devo squad. He’s a recently retired rider who understands how to thrive within the modern peloton. He also has a deep respect and passion for what Lidl-Trek represents as a former 10-year Trek athlete, not to mention a bottomless well of energy.

Irizar has spent the last three-plus years meeting young athletes and their managers alongside race courses and in their homes to assess their fit as Lidl-Trek riders. In his new role, Irizar will spend a little less time on the recruiting trail, and more time mentoring and evaluating riders who are already under the Lidl-Trek umbrella.

He wants riders who can perform well, of course. But just as importantly, Irizar wants riders who appreciate the opportunity to race, and who are eager to be good teammates.

lidl trek team car

“We need the performance and we want to win races, of course. But it’s super important that we need ambassadors of the values of the brands that are sponsoring the team,” Irizar says. “I want riders that come ready to learn everything. When we win, we enjoy it, but we respect that there are others that aren’t so happy. And when we don’t win, we don’t find excuses. We need to know that we are here because of the fans.”

Irizar will also be involved in recruiting young women’s riders as part of his ongoing development as a scout and DS. Neither he nor Lidl-Trek are done evolving. And with legends like Guercilena lending a hand, Irizar believes the devo team could become one of the most important initiatives of the burgeoning Lidl-Trek era.

“When you are able to buy something fresh and of good quality, with the know-how we have, with the chefs we have, with the kitchen we have, we should have no problem,” Irizar says. “We are gonna cook.”
