Fashion Test Drive: Longchamp Le Pliage Xtra S Travel Bag

As a chronic over-packer, I even had room to spare.

We love discovering the most covetable pieces for the upcoming season. And to help you determine if you should go ahead and indulge, we've gone one step further and taken them for a  Test Drive . Let's get you acquainted with Longchamp's classic Le Pliage Xtra S Travel Bag.

There's an undeniable satisfaction in a comeback story: the underdog coming up from behind, emerging triumphant, and accepting the championship trophy to thunderous applause. In fashion's forever game of popularity, luxury leather goods brand Longchamp is proving to be quite the dark horse. Fashion technology and shopping platform Lyst reports in its Index Q2 Report that "searches for Longchamp, driven by the iconic Le Pliage bag , have increased 56 percent in the last three months." The French label is successfully fighting its way through 2023's over-flooded fashion landscape to rank alongside brands like Bottega Veneta and Loewe, both of which routinely top the trending charts. It's by no means a meager feat.

Of course, a heritage brand like Longchamp has never really been benched. Since its launch in 1948, Longchamp has remained a household name for its high-quality leatherwork and craftsmanship, namely with its refined handbags and luggage . There's a high chance you carried your own Pliage tote bag throughout high school. But courtesy of TikTok (surprise, surprise), the brand's experiencing an unforeseen surge of interest in 2023 propelled by a younger crowd: The brand's eponymous hashtag boats 311.8 million views and counting, while the more specific #LongchampLePliage reflects over 95.9 million views. Millennials were already intimately familiar with Longchamp's luxury, but now the brand's caught the eyes—and wallets—of Gen Z as well.

I myself am a Zoomer, but I've loved the label for years: a miniature Pliage pouch was my go-to purse throughout my teen years (I can still hear the resounding snap of its top button.) To pay homage to the illustrious label, I revisited the iconic tote bag. This time, however, I opted for a supersized model with more of a mature feel: Longchamp's Le Pliage Xtra S Travel Bag. Here's how the large weekender travel bag fared on my recent three-day getaway, courtesy of Mercedes-Benz's partnership with Auberge Resorts Collection's Wildflower Farms.

"Philippe Cassegrain, son of Jean Cassegrain, the founder of Longchamp, created Le Pliage, a line of foldable canvas bags trimmed with cowhide leather bags after a trip to Japan, where he was inspired by the art of origami," Longchamp shares with Marie Claire over email. "Since the 1993 launch, there have been countless variations of the Le Pliage silhouette"—including the Xtra, which "comes in 11 silhouettes, from a small phone case crossbody to our popular travel bag." We, of course, are talking specifically about a variation on the latter style.

Here are the design particulars: It's made of all-over, genuine cowhide leather, is lined with polyamide and recycled woven jacquard polyester, and features dark silver metallic hardware. The overall effect is sleek and nondescript—two words I've never used to describe a travel bag before (my previous duffels and carry-alls have been boring, conspicuous, or, somehow, simultaneously both.). I opted for the iteration in black, although Longchamp also offers the silhouette in smokey gray and deep navy.

My weekend itinerary at Wildflower Farms featured various activities, each necessitating a different sartorial vibe. I fed the barn animals, necessitating a "city girl meets humble farm hand" outfit. I dined at the resort's farm-to-table restaurant, so, of course, I had to bring my best cottagecore dress. And lastly, my favorite activity while staying on the property: I took a cherry red Mercedes-Benz SL Roadster for a spin, and to match the convertible's sleek design and 60-mph-in-3.8-seconds acceleration, I needed a speedy, sporty, sports car-worthy look.

In total, I packed five outfits, three pairs of shoes, two sets of  pajamas , toiletries, my laptop, my best sunscreen , sunglasses , and my current summer read. The bag's dimensions come in at 17.7 inches in length, 13.8 inches in height, and 9.1 inches in width—which meant I had room for my goods and some space to spare.

The Utilities

The capacious travel bag comes with an adjustable and removable shoulder strap, so you have the choice of carrying it on your shoulder or in your hand. (Considering my aforementioned extensive packing list, I opted for the former throughout my weekend to spare my wrists the weight.) With the bag's snap button and zip closure, all my goods remained safe and sound, which made for one less thing to worry about throughout the weekend.

With an $810 price tag, Longchamp's Le Pliage Xtra S Travel Bag is admittedly a splurge. But its all-over leather fabrications and details that speak to thought-through practicality make it an astute investment you'll appreciate with every trip you take. Review: Longchamp Weekender—Le Pliage Expandable Travel Duffel Bag

I am a reformed overpacker. My natural inclination toward procrastination, coupled with general forgetfulness, also ensures that I always pack at the last minute, which inevitably leads to my forgetting something (always minor but inevitably causes anxiety). But if adulthood has taught me anything about travel, it’s that nothing is indispensable aside from ID-money-phone-charger-glasses-jacket-and-comfortable shoes .

When traveling for leisure, I cram (somewhat ungracefully) everything into either a backpack or my trusty weekender , both of which will fit under airplane seats (albeit tightly; in the event that there’s no overhead compartment space) and no flight attendant has ever forced me to check them. Needlessly waiting around is the bane of my existence and I avoid it whenever possible. And the wait at baggage claim, surrounded by overtired (so understandably grouchy) travelers, is an experience I dread. So my only criteria for choosing a carry-on: it must be flexible and small enough to stow under the seat in front of me.

I have been curious about the Longchamp Le Pliage Expandable Travel Duffel for about a year now. The expandable aspect is appealing to me because the volume of my load changes considerably over the course of my trips, showing a downward trend as I demolish perishables and exhaust toiletries. The bag then gets refilled with snacks for the return trip, though I often wish for extra room so I can shop more freely.

QUALITY I, the owner of several Le Pliage Totes (reviewed here ), know just how reliable Longchamp’s quality is. I never worry that I would have to contend with broken zippers, no matter how much force I exert when trying to close an overpacked bag.

The water-resistant nylon is highly durable, though I always warn  new users that Le Pliage bags wear heavily in the corners.

DETAIL The bag is designed with double handles (4″ drop) and a removable adjustable canvas shoulder strap (16″-25″ drop; pictured here on the shortest setting), to allow for some flexibility in how the bag can be carried.

PRICE The bag retails for $255, which is far from inexpensive but is relatively reasonable compared to like items. Seasonless Longchamp colors for the Le Pliage (“folding bag”) style are almost never discounted, though seasonal colors often go on moderate sales. If you are after one of the seasonless colors (e.g., black, navy, red, bilberry, gunmetal, tan), you can consider waiting for one of Neiman Marcus’s $50 off $200 events , which comes around every month or so (usually mid-month) and lasts between 2-3 days.

CAPACITY I knew this bag would become my new favorite travel bag when recently, as I was running out the door and already 20 minutes behind schedule, I decided I must pack my trusty blowdryer into the already full bag, a quick unzipping of the duffel made it possible without making any adjustments. This bag obviated what is normally an agonizing process of making mental cost/benefit analyses of forgoing some other item to accommodate my hair dryer.

The bag has three states: (1) pouched , (2) zipped , and (3) unzipped . (1) The bag can be folded into a small pouch when completely empty, which makes it easy to store and also painless to bring as an incidental item. (2) The bag measures 17.75″W, 14″T, and 9″D in a zipped state but (3) expands to 20″T when unzipped. In the zipped state, it has the capacity of a standard duffel bag (very slightly roomier than the Madewell Transport Weekender ). Unzipped, the bag has about 1.5 times as much volume as a regular duffel bag.

My strategy for using this bag (and I am sure I’ll have other revelations as I get better acquainted with it) is to pack as though it only exists in the zipped state and to reserve the space in the unzipped state for unintended or forgotten items. But a packing strategy is only as good as the person who came up with it, so I won’t belabor my approach.

I’m not saying this bag is perfect, because it isn’t. The expandable aspect is undeniably useful but it’s so easy to overload the bag when it’s fully expanded. The bag weighs about 1.5 pounds empty but at capacity can easily weigh 20 times that. I am not a weak person but it is not easy (or pleasant) to haul a 30-pound bag around.

Additionally, aside from a small interior wall pocket, there is no other division built into the bag so it can be difficult to locate an item after you’ve packed it. It may be worthwhile to invest in luggage organizers .

MZ Wallace's Nik duffel bag is a new favorite of senior commerce editor Madison Flager —she's used it as an overnight bag when dog-sitting, as a personal item when flying to Florida for a cruise, and for a weekend trip to Boston. Thanks to its quilted fabric, it's incredibly lightweight at just over two pounds. On the bag's exterior, there are two deep zippered pockets for small items you'll want to grab easily during transit, like your wallet or passport. Made from 100 percent recycled fabric, Patagonia's weather- and abrasion-resistant duffel is one of the most durable on our list. It's also is one of our largest options, holding 70 liters of gear. The padded and removable ergonomic shoulder straps let you carry this duffel like a backpack and detach them when not in use. Senior features editor Rebecca Misner easily packed enough clothes for a two-week road trip from San Fransisco and says it held up beautifully—even after constantly throwing it around the back of her car. And it wicks water, so the unexpected shower that came when she was unpacking the car in Portland, Oregon, was no big deal. Another Paravel favorite: This lightweight fold-up duffel, which packs down to next to nothing. Senior editor Megan Spurrell is a fan, and has used it for overnighters—she says it fits as much as her other duffels, and has held up over the years—and regularly brings it along as a just-in-case bag to carry home souvenirs on longer trips. “I've used it for a couple staycations where I just need to throw things in a bag for a night or two,” she says. “It's nice that it doesn't have a solid structure and is only as big as what you've put inside.” If you’re gifting this bag, include a personal touch with a monogram, which can be added on for $15.

And, in our case, an abundance of pajamas, towels, and home comforts—think portable fan, slippers, a sound machine, and framed photos of family and our pet cat—for a long hospital stay,” she says. There's a handy bottom compartment that can hold two to three pairs of shoes (or your dirty clothes) that also features a removable padded tray that can be washed as needed. Kramer did note that because of its generous size and ample storage, this bag can hold a lot of weight. However, the padded messenger strap made of memory foam does take the comfort level up a notch.

We're big fans of Baboon's indestructible bags—they will stand up to any cargo bin, overhead compartment, or car trunk they're tossed in. The detachable, adjustable shoulder straps are a nice touch, too. While it's a great option for two to four days away, we wouldn't recommend this as a true backpacking bag because of its fabric, which can feel a little stiff.

Everlane's ReNew Transit weekender has become a go-to for Spurrell, ever since she first brought it on a weeklong trip to Egypt . “This makes a fantastic, roomy personal item to top your carry-on for a trip when you probably should check a bag but refuse to. It’s also perfect for a casual one-nighter when you just want to throw pajamas, an outfit or two, and some other essentials inside,” she says. The bag features a wider bottom than top, which is great for filling it to the brim without dealing with items spilling out in the back seat. “It’s quite comfy on the shoulders, even in sleeveless clothes with which other straps might dig in, though the padded section of the strap doesn’t sit on your shoulders unless you extend the length quite a bit (I prefer to keep the straps short so the bag sits right under my arm),” says Spurrell.
