The Global Tourism Economy Forum (GTEF) 2023 will be held on 20 – 23 September 2023 in Macao SAR, China.

Designed to promote the sustainable development of the global tourism sector, the Global Tourism Economy Forum (GTEF) has become a leading international platform over the past decade. Since 2012, the GTEF has brought together policy makers, academics, corporate leaders, and entrepreneurs from around the world to explore opportunities and challenges in the global tourism economy.

This year the Forum will look forward to welcoming leaders from across the public and private sectors back to Macau to celebrate the 10th Edition of the GTEF. Thanks to the continuing support of the host city of Macao, the Supporting Units, Partners, and Speakers which have all contributed to GTEF becoming an influential global platform.

GTEF 2023 features the theme “Destination 2030: Unlocking the Power of Tourism for Business and Development.”As GTEF commemorates its first decade, leaders from across the sector and beyond, will explore opportunities for tourism’s sustainable growth and development and the path towards a more resilient sector. GTEF 2023 will bring to the forefront the potential of the sector to balance the needs of people and the planet, while at the same time contributing to prosperity.

This year, the organizing committee is proud to feature Italy, as the Partner Country, and highlight its distinct art, architecture, gastronomy, heritage, and design and showcase how its tourism economy has successfully intertwined with local culture and the creative industries. The organizing committee is also honored to present Shanghai as the Featured Chinese City. Both Italy and Shanghai present vivid examples of destinations with innovative visions for the future of the global tourism economy. Bringing together global thought leaders in tourism and from other sectors, GTEF 2023 provides an ideal platform to spur investment and promote the global tourism economy.

GTEF 2023 also provides an opportunity to see how Macau is unlocking the power of tourism for business and development with its “1+4 policy”. Advancing the city’s diversification, Macau is strengthening tourism and leisure through the merging of industries, such as big health, hi-tech, modern finance, and conventions and exhibitions including culture and sports.

10th Global Tourism Economy Forum, Macao 2023 concludes with a successful summit

Header image courtesy of Global Tourism Economy Forum

Since its first edition in 2012, the Global Tourism Economy Forum (GTEF) has had one goal in mind— to promote the sustainable development of the international tourism industry. Throughout the four-day event at the Galaxy International Convention Centre in Macau from 20 to 23 September 2023, the topics of sustainability and international cooperation were raised as possible strategies for tourism’s recovery in Macau and beyond. Here’s a recap of what happened at the forum.

The opening ceremony kicked off the conference with speakers and an audience of prominent executives, ministers, industry leaders, scholars, and more joining from Macau and around the world. Themed “Destination 2030: Unlocking the Power of Tourism for Business and Development,” GTEF 2023 tried to find new ways of reviving global tourism with sustainability as a guiding principle. Keynote speeches, fireside chats, and seminars attended by industry experts discussed topics such as post-pandemic trends and practical solutions and strategies for a better tourism.

At the “Towards Destination 2030: Investing in People, Planet, and Prosperity” talk, speakers explored sustainable development and growth in the tourism industry, while “Tourism in the Next Decade: China and the World” focused on domestic tourism, niche trends, and how regional tourism is shaping the future of the industry. Other discussions centred on sustainable growth, the potential of rural and urban tourism, as well as international tourism patterns for Macau and Asia-Pacific.

Notably, “Sustainability in Focus: Navigating the Future of Tourism in Asia,” focused on sustainability and development goals in the international tourism industry and dove into Asia’s contributions to these transformations; “A Renewed Vision: Reshaping Tourism in Europe” explored ways in which cities can revamp regional and global travel in order to sustainably re-energise their respective tourist economies; while “Bridging Nations through Art and Culture”—led by international TV anchor Martina Fuchs—addressed a pressing demand to steer tourism away from financially-based activities in response to an increasing interest in regional cultural and artistic tourism.

With the world now almost completely dependent on technology, it seems fitting that the “Shaping the Future of Travel: The Transformative Power of Technology” panel discussion addressed such issues to talk about how advanced technology and tourism can both benefit one another.

GTEF 2023 also saw the return of its anticipated “Investment and Financing” conference. This year, the panel focused on Macau’s hospitality industry and the new investment opportunities the city offers, followed by presentations and meetings with tourism investment institutions from all around the world to explore investment and cooperation between international and local parties.

To celebrate the anniversary of GTEF and its decade-long contribution to the tourism industry’s development, a birthday lunch was held at the Wynn Palace, with officials taking to the stage to share their dedication to the forum, and the importance of international cooperation in tourism, economy, culture, and more. As the summit drew to a close, the success of the 10th Global Tourism Economy Forum is a testimony to its role and worldwide recognition in the tourism industry.

A-Ma Temple, with a history of over 500 years, is the oldest temple among the three ancient temples in Macau (The other two are Kun Iam Temple and Lin Fong Temple). This temple is dedicated to Matsu, the goddess of seafarers and fishermen.

The name Macau is thought to be derived from the name of the temple. It is said that when the Portuguese sailors landed at the coast just outside the temple and asked the name of the place, the native replied “Jyutping”. The Portuguese then named the peninsula “Macao”. In 2005, the temple became one of the designated sites of the Historic Center of Macau enlisted on UNESCO World Heritage List.

On the way out you will cross a gallery of aquariums showing a riverbed, the harbour waters, a coral reef and last of all the seabed with the remains if an ancient shipwreck. Macao’s tourism industry must prioritise diversification, industry leaders say

New generations seek new tourism products, according to speakers at the Global Tourism Economy Forum.

Diversification is the name of the game when it comes to the future development of tourism in Macao, delegates at the Global Tourism Economy Forum were told today.

Speaking at a morning session entitled “Redefining City Tourism For The Next Decade,” the president of Sands China, Wilfred Wong, said “ We believe integrated resorts must be multifaceted and diversified. Not only hotels and casinos, but also shopping centres, theatres [and] entertainment venues.”

He added: “We understand the new generations seek experiences in tourism. They want memorable products with great value. I think this is something we have been working towards.”

Daisy Ho, the managing director of SJM Resorts, agreed. “We hope in the next 10 years we can attract different kinds of tourists to Macao,” she told delegates.

Ho said: “We need to have [different] projects to attract visitors. We [must] pay attention to different projects and programmes in different areas,” such as sporting events, gastronomy and culture.

She said that the market had also changed. “Since the end of Covid pandemic, we’ve seen an upgrade of the expectations of tourists. In the past, they wanted luxury. Now, they want comprehensive offerings.”

The GTEF is jointly organised by the Macao government and the United Nations World Tourism Organization, with the support of the China Chamber of Tourism and the Macao Government Tourism Office.

An affiliated event, the GTEF Investment and Financing Conference , wraps up today.’
