Maui For Foodies: The Best Maui Food Tours, Tastings & Events

Maui logo

Trendy celebrity-chef restaurants, sprawling food truck villages, iconic fish houses, and roadside Hawaiian BBQ stands? YES, please! If you love food and drink, Maui will not disappoint. The island offers an astounding range of food choices and a variety of unique products that gastronomes will adore (pineapple wine or sugar cane vodka, anyone?) Maui also hosts some of Hawaii’s finest annual food & beverage events. Here are our recommendations for the best Maui food tours and experiences. This is Maui for foodies!

***We’re heartbroken after a devastating wildfire tore through our historic town of Lahaina on August 8, 2023, burning down 5 square miles of local homes and businesses. The rebuild will take years, and we’re monitoring the situation closely to keep our readers as best informed as possibly can. West Maui is open to responsible, mindful, and respectful visitors starting October 8, 2023***

MAUI FOR FOODIES: UNIQUE MAUI FOOD TOURS & TASTINGS

There are plenty of opportunities to explore how some of Maui’s top products are made. Here are some of our favorite Maui tours and tastings.

OCEAN VODKA

Ever been to a vodka farm? Hawaii Sea Spirits Organic Farm and Distillery is located in Upcountry Maui. A 30-minute tasting tour will give you an inside look at Hawaii Sea Spirit’s 80-acre operation and allow you to sample some of their premium products— Ocean Organic Vodka Included. The property is also home to a cafe, which serves craft cocktails, local-inspired eats, and flatbreads. Relax on the expansive lawn while you eat and take in a stellar Upcountry sunset. (Hot tip: last call for food and drink is at 6:45, while the sun doesn’t set until after seven in the summer. For the best sunset views, plan a winter visit.) There is no admission fee to visit the farm, gift shop, or cafe; there is a fee for the half-hour tour.

Maui For Foodies: two goats at Maui's Surfing Goat Dairy

SURFING GOAT DAIRY

Just down the road from the vodka farm, this charming certified-humane goat farm produces more than 30 delicious (and national award-winning) goat cheese products— including aged soft cheese, chevre, and quark. There is no admission fee, so you can stop by anytime to sample the products. But three guided tours are available for purchase, and I personally love the 2-hour Grand Dairy Tour offered on Saturdays. Fun and informative! You can feed and milk the goats, learn about the cheese-making process, and enjoy a very generous tasting of the dairy’s gourmet goat cheeses. Come hungry!

Maui for Foodies: entrance to Maui Wine in Ulupalakua, Upcountry Maui

Situated on a historic estate in Ulupalakua (Upcountry Maui), surrounded by trees that are well over 150 years old, MauiWine’s tasting room and gift shop could not be located in a more picturesque setting. The winery (formerly known as Tedeschi Winery) started in 1974 and now produces a range of unique pineapple wines as well as traditional estate wines. Wander the lovely grounds and stop by the tasting room to sample these wonderful handcrafted wines. Guided tours of the grounds are complimentary; there is a fee for wine tasting.

Maui for Foodies: Maui Brewing Kihei tap room

MAUI BREWING COMPANY

Maui Brewing Company, Hawaii’s largest craft brewery, offers 45-minute guided tours of its gleaming brewery facility in Kihei, ending with a tasting (for a fee). If you want to enjoy a meal along with your brewsky, you can dine at the large new signature restaurant that opened on the premises in 2018. Even if you’re not a beer drinker, it’s a great restaurant— and there’s plenty of cocktail and non-alcoholic options on offer as well (psst, try the Maui Brewing root beer).

maui food and wine tours

MAUI PINEAPPLE PLANTATION & DISTILLERY TOUR

The Maui Pineapple Tour is an authentic 90-minute tour of a working pineapple plantation in Hali’imaile (near Makawao). You’ll learn about “all things pineapple” and go right into the pineapple fields to sample fresh-picked Maui Gold pineapple, an extra sweet variety. Plus, you’ll leave with your own pineapple, boxed and ready for travel (included in the tour price). You can also choose to include a 30-minute distillery tour of Hali’imaile Distilling Company.

MAUI FOR FOODIES: SPECIALTY MAUI FOOD & BEVERAGE EXPERIENCES

Maui for foodies: two champagne glasses and an ocean view

CHAMPAGNE HALE AT THE CLIFF HOUSE

Champagne Hale is a seasonal pop-up event hosted by the Montage Kapalua Bay. The event takes place at one of Maui’s most epic venues: the Kapalua Cliff House, perched above the waters of Namalu Bay. Guests can enjoy bubbly glasses of Veuve Clicquot champagnes served alongside gourmet appetizers. The champagne isn’t cheap, but for upscale travelers (or a special splurge), this is an exquisite way to enjoy a Maui sunset.  Check the Montage’s website for dates.

O'o Farm

O’O FARM GOURMET LUNCH AND FARM TOUR

O’o Farm in upcountry Maui offers a genuine “farm to fork” experience. The experience kicks off with a tour of the 8.5-acre farm, during which you will harvest the produce for your meal. Then, relax and enjoy a chef-prepared gourmet lunch incorporating the farm-fresh products, set on the slopes of Mount Haleakala with stunning views of the island.  Also offered is a similar O’o Farm experience for breakfast that includes a coffee farm tour: The Seed to Cup Gourmet Breakfast and Tour.

MAUI FOR FOODIES: OUTSTANDING MAUI LUAUS

A luau provides a great introduction to the music, dance, and food of Polynesia! Most luau menus feature traditional Hawaiian dishes like kalua pork, poi, and Molokai sweet potatoes (a local purple variety), plus many other local foods . No one leaves a luau hungry! There are lots of great luaus to choose from, but in my opinion, the following three Maui luaus truly stand above the rest for doing something extraordinary with the food and show. Both are highly recommended — especially if the culinary experience is a top priority for you at a luau.

Maui for Foodies: Grand Wailea Luau fire dancer

GRAND WAILEA LUAU at Grand Wailea  Resort  (South Maui)

The Grand Wailea Luau (formerly Aha’aina Luau) reopened in January 2021 and has been reinvented to meet necessary COVID health protocols. No more long luau tables with guests brushing shoulders; no more serve-yourself buffet lines. Now your party is seated at your own individual table and you are served there, dining by candlelight. Enjoy excellent food, and one of the most creative luau shows shows on the island— featuring Hawaiian hula and Polynesian dances, fire dancers (pictured), a graceful aerial dancer who dangles from the palm trees, and a mesmerizing “cloud goddess” hula.

Maui for Foodies: Feast at Mokapu

FEAST AT MOKAPU, at Andaz Wailea  (South Maui)

The Feast at Mokapu is a reimagined luau experience with a hint of luxury. Traditional luau fare gets a gourmet twist— the menu was curated by Andaz executive chef Isaac Bancaco and dishes are plated rather than served buffet style. Guests can also take advantage of an open bar that pours craft cocktails throughout the night. The entertainment is second to none and tells authentic stories of the Polynesian voyagers that eventually settled on Maui’s shores.

MAUI FOR FOODIES: ANNUAL MAUI FOOD FESTIVALS AND EVENTS

Maui For Foodies: Hawaii Food and Wine Festival

HAWAII FOOD & WINE FESTIVAL

This statewide event takes place over three weeks on multiple islands in the fall, showcasing Hawaii’s locally grown foods and featuring a roster of internationally known master chefs and culinary personalities. Hawaii Food & Wine Festival events occurs on Maui each year (usually in October) in the Kaanapali Beach Resort area. Details & Future Dates   (Stay nearby at these Kaanapali accommodations )

KAPALUA WINE & FOOD FESTIVAL

The Kapalua Wine and Food Festival is one of the granddaddies of Hawaii food events! This longstanding (four decades and counting) Maui food festival features wine tasting seminars, cooking demos, and fabulous Grand Tasting event. Join renowned winemakers and celebrity chefs for this delicious weekend in Kapalua. It usually takes place in June. Details & Future Dates   (Places to stay in Kapalua )

Maui For Foodies: Wailea Restaurant Week table setting

WAILEA RESTAURANT WEEK

Twice a year, in spring and fall (usually May and November), Wailea’s fabulous, world-renowned restaurants celebrate Restaurant Week with three-course, pre-fixe menus ranging from $29 to $59 per person. This is an excellent opportunity to experience these acclaimed restaurants at a value price and support a worthwhile cause while you’re munching — a portion of the proceeds is donated to the Maui Food Bank. Details & Future D ates   (Here are some great Wailea  condos to stay at)  Notice: Wailea Restaurant Week has been canceled for 2022 and 2023. We hope to see it return in 2024.

maui food and wine tours

MAUI COUNTY FAIR

Okay, this isn’t a foodie event per se, but the Maui County Fair is where it’s at if you’re keen on trying local fare. When the fair comes to town in September/October, the food court takes over nearly an acre of fairgrounds, lined with booth after booth. Almost every popular local dish is served here— chicken katsu, chow fun, kalua pork, shoyu chicken, dry mein, loco moco, mochi, malasadas… I’m getting hungry just thinking about it. Plus, booths are usually operated by school groups, churches, canoe clubs, and sports teams trying to raise money, so it’s a great way to support the local community. Stay in Maalaea , only 15 minutes from the fairgrounds in Wailuku! Details & Future Dates   Notice: the Maui County Fair has been canceled for 2022 and 2023. It will return in 2024.

Go on a primal yet sophisticated culinary adventure with an open-fire chef who happens to be one of the island’s top sommeliers.

Join Yeshua Goodman, owner of Kiawe Outdoor and an advanced sommelier, on a next-level Maui tour of tastes and tales. Goodman has partnered exclusively with Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea to create a Fire & Wine experience set on an estate that dates back to the rule of King Kamehameha III.

Your journey begins with a helicopter flight that departs from Wailea Golf Club and follows the dramatic topography of Maui – waterfalls, rainforests, Mount Haleakala and the rugged North Shore coastline – to the village of Haiku, off the beaten path on the island’s North Shore. Your destination: the enchanting grounds of Haiku House, a former sugar cane plantation that’s now a 20-acre expanse of botanical history where you can stroll. Here, an expert from the Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum will lead you on a private tour, offered only to Four Seasons guests, regaling you with stories passed down through the estate’s line of locally renowned and influential owners.

Step back into the here and now with a personalized multi-course meal that connects you to the elements. Goodman – a Maui local, fisherman, spear diver and hunter – locally sources the ingredients for your dinner, which he cooks over an open flame. Participate in the cooking yourself, if you like, before the fare comes out of the fire. You will already have chosen wine pairings in an interactive blind tasting led by Goodman.

End the evening with an imaginative dessert demo prepared by a Four Seasons pastry chef, and return to the Resort by private car.

This experience has a 72-hour, 100% cancellation policy.

The Maui News

KAHULUI–Following the impact of the Lahaina Wildfires in August 2023, Maui Chocolate Tour will reopen its immersive cacao farm experience this month. Guests can once again enjoy a captivating journey through the Maui Ku’ia Estate cacao farm and the largest chocolate factory in Hawaii where tours are available daily. For $85, guests can book their guided cacao farm tour by visiting mauichocolatetour.com.

Led by an expert guide, visitors will be transported to the private cacao farm situated in the serene foothills of the West Maui mountains. Spanning more than 20 acres of lush cacao trees, the tour provides a comprehensive journey from “farm to bar” through the chocolate-making process. Engaging activities include interactive and educational sessions that showcase cacao tree insights, hands-on harvesting techniques, culminating in an indulgent and exclusive 9-piece tasting of Maui Ku’ia Estate’s award-winning chocolates.

In addition to the farm tour, a new behind-the-scenes offering will be launched called “The Chocolate Factory Experience.” The 90-minute tour offers a look inside the Maui Ku’ia Estate Chocolate factory and how Lahaina-grown cacao is turned into chocolate, led by Founder and CEO Dr. Gunars Valkirs himself.

With a rich history spanning back to the planting of the first cacao trees in 2013, Gunars has meticulously overseen every detail of the company’s growth, including the design and construction of the state-of-the-art factory where their acclaimed chocolates are crafted today. Exclusive to VIP groups of chocolate enthusiasts, this 90-minute experience delves deep into the art and science of chocolate production, from bean to bar.

Guests will witness each step of the intricate process and savor samples from intermediate stages, not available for purchase elsewhere. Following the factory tour, guests ascend to an open-air pavilion for a self-guided tasting featuring three varieties from Maui-grown beans and a choice of four additional selections. Guests can enhance their tasting with optional alcoholic beverage pairings from the café menu, all while enjoying a continuous video presentation detailing the farm-to-factory journey. As a token of appreciation, guests receive a $25 gift card for use in the cafe or store, ensuring a sweet memory to take home from this delectable experience. For ages eight and up, patrons can book their Chocolate Factory Experience for $125 at mauichocolatetour.com. Every Sunday, a different Maui nonprofit will be featured for a special “Maui Nonprofit Chocolate Factory Experience.” 100% of the proceeds from the Sunday Factory Experience will be donated to a local Maui nonprofit.

“After months of working towards recovery in our community following the wildfires that devastated our beloved Lahaina town, I am excited to announce that we are now reopening the Maui Chocolate Tour with our partners at Maui Ku’ia Estate Chocolate,” said Mary Britton, chief operating officer of Hawaii Farm Project. “We are grateful for the opportunity to reopen one of Hawaii’s most distinctive and enjoyable farm tours, as well as debut a brand new chocolate experience, made possible by the support of both the community and through the dedication of our incredible staff and guides.”

Maui Chocolate Tour is located at 78 Ulupono Street Suite 1, Lahaina, HI 96761. For more information, visit mauichocolatetour.com.

Hawaii lawmakers take aim at vacation rentals after Lahaina wildfire worsens Maui housing crisis

A single mother of two, Amy Chadwick spent years scrimping and saving to buy a house in the town of Lahaina on the Hawaiian island of Maui. But after a devastating fire leveled Lahaina in August and reduced Chadwick’s home to white dust , the cheapest rental she could find for her family and dogs cost $10,000 a month.

Chadwick, a fine-dining server, moved to Florida, where she could stretch her homeowners insurance dollars. She’s worried Maui’s exorbitant rental prices, driven in part by vacation rentals that hog a limited housing supply, will hollow out her tight-knit town.

Most people in Lahaina work for hotels, restaurants and tour companies and can’t afford $5,000 to $10,000 a month in rent, she said.

“You’re pushing out an entire community of service industry people. So no one’s going to be able to support the tourism that you’re putting ahead of your community,” Chadwick said by phone from her new home in Satellite Beach on Florida’s Space Coast. “Nothing good is going to come of it unless they take a serious stance, putting their foot down and really regulating these short-term rentals.”

The Aug. 8 wildfire killed 101 people and destroyed housing for 6,200 families, amplifying Maui’s already acute housing shortage and laying bare the enormous presence of vacation rentals in Lahaina. It reminded lawmakers that short-term rentals are an issue across Hawaii, prompting them to consider bills that would give counties the authority to phase them out.

Gov. Josh Green got so frustrated he blurted an expletive during a recent news conference.

“This fire uncovered a clear truth, which is we have too many short-term rentals owned by too many individuals on the mainland and it is b—,” Green said. “And our people deserve housing, here.”

A general view shows the aftermath of a devastating wildfire in Lahaina, Hawaii, Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2023. Maui residents consider the unthinkable: Las Vegas, the ‘ninth island’

After Maui’s wildfire, with tourism down and Hawaii home prices already high, some are making mainland moves, with California and Las Vegas in their sights.

Aug. 29, 2023

Vacation rentals are a popular alternative to hotels for those seeking kitchens, lower costs and opportunities to sample everyday island life. Supporters say they boost tourism, the state’s biggest employer. Critics revile them for inflating housing costs, upending neighborhoods and contributing to the forces pushing locals and Native Hawaiians to leave Hawaii for less expensive states .

This migration has become a major concern in Lahaina. The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement, a nonprofit, estimates at least 1,500 households — or a quarter of those who lost their homes — have left since the August wildfire.

The blaze burned single family homes and apartments in and around downtown, which is the core of Lahaina’s residential housing. An analysis by the University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization found a relatively low 7.5% of units there were vacation rentals as of February 2023.

Lahaina neighborhoods spared by the fire have a much higher ratio of vacation rentals: About half the housing in Napili, about seven miles north of the burn zone, is short-term rentals.

Lahaina residents begin returning to sites of homes destroyed by deadly wildfire

Some Lahaina residents are returning to their devastated properties for the first time since the historic Hawaiian town was destroyed by wildfire.

Sept. 25, 2023

Napili is where Chadwick thought she found a place to buy when she first went house hunting in 2016. But a Canadian woman secured it with a cash offer and turned it into a vacation rental.

Also outside the burn zone are dozens of short-term rental condominium buildings erected decades ago on land zoned for apartments.

In 1992, Maui County explicitly allowed owners in these buildings to rent units for less than 180 days at a time even without short-term rental permits. Since November, activists have occupied the beach in front of Lahaina’s biggest hotels to push the mayor or governor to use their emergency powers to revoke this exemption.

Money is a powerful incentive for owners to rent to travelers: a 2016 report prepared for the state found a Honolulu vacation rental generates 3.5 times the revenue of a long-term rental.

State Rep. Luke Evslin, the Housing Committee chair, said Maui and Kauai counties have suffered net losses of residential housing in recent years thanks to a paucity of new construction and the conversion of so many homes to short-term rentals.

“Every alarm bell we have should be ringing when we’re literally going backwards in our goal to provide more housing in Hawaii,” he said.

In his own Kauai district, Evslin sees people leaving, becoming homeless or working three jobs to stay afloat.

The Democrat was one of 47 House members who co-sponsored one version of legislation that would allow short-term rentals to be phased out. One objective is to give counties more power after a U.S. judge in 2022 ruled Honolulu violated state law when it attempted to prohibit rentals for less than 90 days. Evslin said that decision left Hawaii’s counties with limited tools, such as property taxes, to control vacation rentals.

Lawmakers also considered trying to boost Hawaii’s housing supply by forcing counties to allow more houses to be built on individual lots. But they watered down the measure after local officials said they were already exploring the idea.

Short-term rental owners said a phase-out would violate their property rights and take their property without compensation, potentially pushing them into foreclosure. Some predicted legal challenges.

Alicia Humiston, president of the Rentals by Owner Awareness Assn., said some areas in West Maui were designed for travelers and therefore lack schools and other infrastructure families need.

“This area in West Maui that is sort of like this resort apartment zone — that’s all north of Lahaina — it was never built to be local living,” Humiston said.

One housing advocate argues that just because a community allowed vacation rentals decades ago doesn’t mean it still needs to now.

“We are not living in the 1990s or in the 1970s,” said Sterling Higa, executive director of Housing Hawaii’s Future. Counties “should have the authority to look at existing laws and reform them as necessary to provide for the public good.”

Courtney Lazo, a real estate agent who is part of Lahaina Strong, the group occupying Kaanapali Beach, said tourists can stay in her hometown now but many locals can’t.

“How do you expect a community to recover and heal and move forward when the people who make Lahaina, Lahaina, aren’t even there anymore?” she said at a recent news conference as her voice quivered. “They’re moving away.”

McAvoy writes for the Associated Press.

The Complete Guide to New Haven Pizza

Get to know one of the world’s best pizza traditions as it nears its 100th anniversary.

Adam H. Callaghan is an editor and writer who has worked across digital and print for 10 years, covering food and drink, travel, lifestyle, and sustainability. His work has appeared in Wine Enthusiast, Lonely Planet, Atlas Obscura, and Eater, among others.

It’s been 99 years since Frank Pepe and his wife, Filomena, opened Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana on Wooster Street in New Haven, Connecticut, establishing one of the best pizza traditions in the U.S. Pepe’s (as fans call the pizzeria) created New Haven-style apizza, which is pronounced ah-beets — one of the tradition’s many quirks. Apizza, with its gorgeously charred thin crust and unique toppings, boasts celebrity supporters from Paul Giamatti to Michael Bolton and has inspired imitators in locales as far-flung as Chicago , Oregon , and Tokyo .

The Holy Trinity

The legacy of New Haven pizza is inseparable from the Big Three, aka the Holy Trinity of old-school pizzerias that defined the style and continue to be its most famous purveyors: Pepe’s, Modern Apizza , and Sally’s Apizza .

Frank Pepe opened his seminal pizzeria in 1925, and it remains in the family, now with 17 East Coast restaurants from Massachusetts to Florida. Modern was established in 1934 on State Street, not too far from Pepe’s, and went through several ownership changes before ending up in the hands of William Pustari in 1988. Sally’s Apizza, which came under new ownership in 2017 and has since been in expansion mode, was founded in 1938 by Frank Pepe’s nephew, Salvatore “Sally” Consiglio, just a block down Wooster Street from Pepe’s, making for an epic double-dinner opportunity.

Like the Yankees and Red Sox, these three pizzerias inspire fierce loyalties among locals, who often grew up going to just one. No matter which you choose for dinner, don’t expect to saunter in, as they all command long lines. That said, you might get lucky at Pepe’s secondary location, set back from its main pizzeria on Wooster Street. Frank’s daughters bought this unassuming building in the 1970s and named it The Spot, but those in the know recognize it as the original home of Pepe’s until the business moved next door in 1937.

"It's not burnt, it's charred"

Pepe, an immigrant born near Naples, Italy, was inspired by Neapolitan pizza. The major difference is that while Neapolitan is baked for about a minute in a blazing-hot wood-fired oven, New Haven apizza traditionally bakes for closer to 10 minutes in the high, dry heat of a coal-fired oven.

This results in another hallmark of apizza, “a slightly charred crust that imparts a delightful crispness,” explains Kevin Gagliard, director of operations for Pepe’s. That delightful char can surprise newcomers, particularly when the darkness of the crust ends up all over their fingertips.

“We always ask as soon as they sit down, ‘Have you been to a Sally's Apizza before?’” says Bret Lunsford, executive chef and culinary director of Sally’s, which is in expansion mode. “If they haven't, then we explain what New Haven apizza is, starting with, ‘It's not burnt, it's charred.’”

Pepe’s and Sally’s are the only apizza places that still use coal, but other pizzerias work to achieve the trademark blackened crust with ovens powered by gas, electricity, or oil, as in Modern’s case since it moved on from coal in the late ’60s.

There's nothing plain about good ingredients

The pizza that Pepe was selling at the start had a simple topping of tomato sauce, pecorino cheese, garlic, oregano, and olive oil. This “plain” or “tomato pie” remains the foundation for apizza, showcasing the bright, bold flavors of high-quality ingredients. Minimalism tends to be a throughline for apizza toppings, which means even mozzarella, or “mootz,” doesn’t come standard — you have to order it like an extra ingredient.

Another notable topping is clam, which shows up on garlicky white pies. Beginners should try Sally’s, which features finely chopped bivalves seasoned beautifully, helpful for winning converts to the unusual pizza topping. Clam pie aficionados, however, also flock to West Haven for Zuppardi’s , which features whole clams, fresh-shucked. It’s the only pizzeria outside of the city limits that locals count among the pantheon of true apizza places for two reasons: It originated in New Haven in 1932, and it’s just that good.

Other popular toppings include potato — served mandolin-thin with aromatic rosemary at Sally’s or mashed alongside bacon at the downtown brewpub/nightclub BAR — and eggplant, sliced thin, breaded, and fried to perfection at Modern.

Beyond apizza

Of course, not all New Haven pizza is New Haven-style pizza. Noteworthy outliers include Yorkside Pizza Restaurant , an old-school Greek pizzeria downtown frequented by Yale students; Gioia , a hip new Italian restaurant and cocktail bar across from Pepe’s, where you’ll find the city’s only square grandma-style pies; and Zeneli , which serves classic Neapolitan-style pizza next door to Gioia.

But most New Haven pizzerias take fairly direct inspiration from the Big Three, tending toward thinner pies cooked at high heat till charred. Ernie’s Pizzeria in Amity eats like New Haven meets New York, extra cheese and all. Da Legna at Nolo on State Street is apizza if it were wood-fired and maximalist. The term that the East Rock neighborhood’s Atticus Market uses could describe all these pizzerias and more: “New Haven-ish.”

“Going in, I think we were probably the harshest critics of the idea of how we were going to do pizza in New Haven,” says CEO Charles Negaro, Jr., who also runs New Haven icons Atticus Bookstore Cafe and wholesale Chabaso Bakery , both founded by his father. “People have such strong loyalties to their spot.” Case in point: Atticus pizza began with Negaro and a friend trying to replicate the flavors of Sally’s in the backyard for fun.

When Atticus Market opened in 2021, the passion project became a business prospect, evolving into its own unique take that launched later that year: an electric oven-fired sourdough pizza featuring regional whole grains and local, seasonal toppings like charred herb pesto or koji-roasted mushrooms. Like so much of New Haven’s apizza scene, it blends respect for tradition with unparalleled good taste.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
