Milford Sound Cruises: Will I get sea sick?

Skip forward, understanding sea sickness, milford weather & sea conditions, likelihood of getting sick, combating sea sickness, embracing the adventure.

Milford Sound, a sparkling jewel in the crown of New Zealand's South Island, beckons countless explorers each year with its majestic fjords and stunning natural beauty. Cruises are the popular choice for traveler's, promising an unforgettable journey through the serene waters of the Sound. However, the fear of getting sea sick can often cast a shadow over the anticipation of the journey. But fear not! This quick guide will equip you with all the knowledge you need to enjoy your two hour voyage without the worry of sea sickness.

Understanding sea sickness.

Before we delve into specifics, it's crucial to understand what sea sickness is. Essentially, it’s a form of motion sickness characterised by a feeling of nausea and, in extreme cases, vertigo experienced when one is out at sea.

Sea sickness occurs when there's a conflict between what your eyes see and what your inner ears, which help with balance, perceive. If your inner ear senses the motion of the waves but your eyes don't see it (usually when you're in a cabin without windows), you can start feeling sea sick.

Milford Sound weather and sea conditions.

The weather conditions in Milford Sound can vary quite dramatically, which can impact the sea conditions. The Sound is a fjord, meaning it's a narrow arm of the sea bordered by steep cliffs.

Typically, the waters within the Sound are calm, almost mirror-like. However, the Sound opens up into the Tasman Sea, where the sea conditions can be more unpredictable with long sea swells. Most cruises venture just far enough into the Tasman to offer a view back to the mouth of the Sound.

This part of the journey usually lasts about 30 minutes or less, depending on the weather. In the event of very rough weather, cruises are careful and stay within the Sound to ensure passenger comfort and safety.

Likelihood of getting sea sick on Milford Sound cruises.

Milford sound cruise, will I get sea sickness

The good news is that most traveler's report little to no sea sickness while on Milford Sound cruises. Given that the majority of the cruise takes place within the sheltered waters of the Sound, the boat does not sway excessively.

However, sensitivity to sea sickness varies from person to person. Some people may feel nauseous at the slightest hint of motion, while others might not be affected at all. If you're prone to motion sickness, you might experience some discomfort when the cruise ventures into the Tasman Sea.

How to combat sea sickness.

Before the cruise..

If you know you're prone to sea sickness, it's best to take precautions. One of the most effective ways to combat sea sickness is by taking anti-motion sickness medication, such as 'Sea-Legs', before you set sail. These non-prescription medications can control the symptoms of motion sickness and are generally most effective if taken at least one hour before your cruise.

Another tip is not to consume a heavy meal before your cruise. A full stomach can increase the chances of feeling nauseous. Opt for a light meal or snack instead, and avoid alcohol, which can exacerbate sea sickness.

During the Cruise.

Once on board, there are several strategies you can employ to minimise the chance of sea sickness:

Choose a good spot: If possible, stay in the middle of the boat, where the motion is usually at a minimum. If you're inside, try to sit near a window so you can maintain a visual connection with the horizon.

Fresh air: If you start to feel queasy, get outside in the fresh air if you can.

Focus on the horizon: Fix your gaze on the horizon. This can help your brain reconcile the discrepancy between the motion your body is feeling and the stillness it is seeing.

Avoid eeading: Reading can make motion sickness worse, so it's best to avoid it while the boat is in motion.

Hydrate: drink plenty of water to keep hydrated, as dehydration can exacerbate feelings of nausea.

Choosing a reputable cruise operator.

For those concerned about sea sickness, choosing a reputable cruise operator can make a difference. For example, the company we partner with for our cruise leg of the Luxe Tours Milford Sound day trip , RealNZ, is a well-regarded choice for Milford Sound cruises, noted for their attentive crews and comfortable boats. They prioritise passenger safety and comfort, ensuring that the journey is as smooth as possible, especially during rough weather.

I'm very sensitive to motion sickness. I think I'll be ok on the portion of the cruise that's in the fiord per se, but am concerned about sailing in the Tasman Sea. Is there a difference betwen the day cruises vs. the overnight cruises ? It seems both sail to the end of the fiord to the Tasman Sea and back. Any comments/recommendations on this?

Also, how bumpy are the plane rides to Milford Sound? The planes look small. I know the flights are cancelled in bad rather but how bumpy are the rides when the planes fly?

Any comments on this would be appreciated.

Hard to say with motion sickness, Some people only have to look at a boat and they are sick.

Generally there is no big problem within the Sound. It's an inland waterway, and if there are waves they tend to be short, and the boat doesn't move around much. Once you get out into the Tasman you get the long sea swells which are more likely to cause sea sickness. These are there all the time. Sometimes larger than others, but there is always a swell. The boats don't go far into the Tasman, just far enough so you can see back to the mouth of the Sound. Usually you would be in the area exposed to the swell for 30 minutes or less. If it is very rough they stay within the Sound. THe crew dislike seasick passengers even more than the passesngers do, all that mess to clean up.

milford sound cruise seasick

I was ok in the Sound as you are looking at land all the time but it was not pleasant in the open sea and I did feel unwell. That said it is only for a short time and I find if I stay outside I'm usually ok- which I was in this case.

I wouldn't not do the Cruise because of this. It is really worthwhile and beautiful and the turn around in the Tasman would be less than 30 min max and once back in the Fiord all is well again.

Maybe purchase some sea sickness bands (you wear these on your wrists and they look like a watch band). Put them on before you even get near the boat.

The overnight anchorage is always in Harrisons Cove, and it is always calm.

The suggestion of seasick bands, or perhaps tablets, is a good one. Even if they don't work, you can always convince yourself that it would have been worse without them.

Only you can decide how this will affect you, but if you can stand the motion in a car or coach, I don't think you would have any trouble on Milford Sound, and it would be a great pity to miss out on this fabulous experience.

This cruise was an AWESOME adventure-one of the highlights of my time in NZ!!

We saw quite a few dolphins swimming with the boat at one point! You'll also get to see some beautiful waterfalls!

They have a few kayaks that you can use. I went for my first kayak ride while on the cruise . It was amazing to be in the small kayak, looking out at the HUGE mountains surrounding you on both sides-an amazzzing experience!!!!

Just in case, you might want to get the wrist bands as recommended by other people on here.

The Magic of Milford Sound

Once described by Rudyard Kipling as the ‘ eighth wonder of the world ‘, Milford Sound has a mystique and allure that transcends mere landscapes.

It’s not just a fjord; it’s an experience, a testament to the sublime power of nature and the stories she whispers to those who listen.

Historical Significance

Before the influx of eager tourists and wanderlust-filled travelers, Milford Sound was known as Piopiotahi in Māori lore.

The name is derived from the piopio bird, which is now sadly extinct, and tells a tale of heartbreak, where a young hero named Maui tried to win immortality for his beloved but perished in the attempt.

Piopiotahi thus represents the tears shed by the native bird for Maui. Such myths and legends add depth to the fjord, making it more than just a visual marvel—it’s a significant emblem of New Zealand’s rich cultural tapestry.

Natural Beauty and Wonders

Milford Sound’s topography is the stuff of dreams. The fjord was sculpted over millennia by glacial activities, resulting in dramatic cliffs plunging straight into dark emerald waters.

The peaks, like the famed Mitre Peak, soar 1,692 meters skyward from the water’s edge—a sight that has left many travelers spellbound.

And then there are the waterfalls. Whether it’s the ethereal Lady Bowen Falls or the towering Stirling Falls, the cascades here dance with life, especially after a bout of rain, which, by the way, is frequent and only adds to the Sound’s charm.

But what makes Milford Sound genuinely magical is its living tapestry. Seals bask on rocky outcrops, pods of playful dolphins weave through the waters, and if you’re exceptionally lucky, you might even spot the shy Fiordland crested penguin.

As we delve deeper into this guide, remember that Milford Sound is more than its physical attributes. It’s a symphony of history, culture, and natural beauty, waiting to be explored and cherished.

Best Time to Cruise Milford Sound

Milford Sound, with its ever-shifting moods and capricious weather, is enchanting year-round. However, depending on what you seek from your voyage, certain seasons might hold a special allure.

Let’s navigate through the calendar to discover the ideal times to set sail on this iconic fjord on a New Zealand cruise .

Overview of New Zealand’s Seasons

Located in the Southern Hemisphere, New Zealand’s seasons are a delightful flip from what many are accustomed to:

  • Summer (December to February) : Warm and bustling with tourists.
  • Autumn (March to May) : Cooler temperatures and a riot of fall colors.
  • Winter (June to August) : Crisp air, snow-capped peaks, and fewer visitors.
  • Spring (September to November) : Blooming flora and cascading waterfalls in full force.

Peak vs. Off-Peak Seasons

Summer is the most popular time, and for good reason. Longer days mean more time to soak in the sights, and the weather is generally pleasant. However, expect larger crowds and slightly elevated prices.

Winter , on the other hand, offers an intimate, serene experience. The snow-kissed peaks contrast beautifully with the dark waters, making for stunning photographs.

It’s also an ideal time if you’re on the lookout for budget-friendly deals.

Weather Considerations

Rain is a frequent visitor to Milford Sound, often gracing the fjord over 200 days a year. But far from being a spoiler, the rain dramatically transforms the landscape. Waterfalls multiply, and the entire Sound gets wrapped in a mystical mist.

If you’re after dramatic photography or simply want to experience Milford Sound in its raw, untamed glory, don’t shy away from a rainy forecast.

Choosing the Right Cruise

Milford Sound’s magic is undeniable. But, like any spellbinding story, the narrative changes depending on the storyteller. In this case, the ‘storyteller’ is the type of cruise you choose.

The right cruise not only ensures you’re treated to the fjord’s best views but also aligns with your personal travel style, budget, and desires. Here’s how to navigate the plethora of cruise options available.

Different Types of Cruises

The majesty of Milford Sound is indisputable. Yet, the difference between a good cruise and an unforgettable one often lies in the details. Here are some insider tips and tricks to elevate your Milford Sound journey, ensuring every moment is soaked in wonder.

Opt for a Dawn or Dusk Cruise

While the fjord is magnificent at any time, there’s a certain magic during the golden hours. The soft light paints the cliffs and waters in hues of pink and gold, making for dreamy views and exceptional photographs.

Positioning on the Boat

While everyone rushes to the top deck, consider the bow (front) of the boat. Not only will you have unobstructed views but also feel the full force of the wind and mist, especially when approaching waterfalls.

Engage with the Crew

The crew isn’t just there to sail the ship; they’re a treasure trove of stories, facts, and insights about the fjord. Engage with them, ask questions, and you’ll leave with a richer understanding of Milford Sound.

Embrace the Rain

Many travelers hope for sunny skies, but rain in Milford Sound is a blessing in disguise. It amplifies the number of waterfalls, with hundreds appearing out of nowhere, cascading down the cliffs.

Dress in Layers

We’ve touched on this before, but it’s worth reiterating. The weather can fluctuate dramatically during a single cruise. Dressing in layers ensures you can adjust accordingly, staying comfortable throughout.

Milford Sound bird

Pre-Book Key Amenities

If you’re keen on specific amenities, like a gourmet meal or a guided tour, book in advance. Not only does this secure your spot, but pre-booking often comes at a discounted rate.

While it’s tempting to live-stream your journey or stay glued to your camera, take some time to simply be present. Feel the mist on your face, listen to the sounds of nature, and let the beauty of the fjord sink in. There’s no better memory than the one etched in your heart.

Post-Cruise Exploration

After disembarking, don’t rush off. Explore the immediate surroundings, like the Milford Sound Visitor Centre or the short Foreshore Walk. These spots offer additional perspectives and information about the region.

Reveling in the Majesty of Milford Sound

Steeped in natural beauty and cultural history, Milford Sound is a place where words often fall short and emotions take the lead. As we’ve journeyed through the depths of what this magical fjord has to offer, it’s evident that it’s not just about the scenic boat rides or the majestic waterfalls—it’s about the stories that intertwine with every ripple of water, the song of every bird, the whisper of ancient Maori legends in the wind.

With the towering Mitre Peak standing sentinel and the inky waters reflecting the dance of clouds and sun, every corner of this sanctuary tells a tale of time, nature, and the delicate balance between man and the environment.

As you prepare or reminisce about your journey, remember the importance of sustainable travel, ensuring this untouched paradise remains pristine for generations to come. Arm yourself with the insights, tips, and knowledge shared, but also keep an open heart, ready to embrace the unexpected delights that Milford Sound invariably brings.

Are there any age restrictions for cruisers?

Most cruises in Milford Sound are family-friendly and welcome guests of all ages, from infants to seniors. Some might offer discounted rates for children.

Milford Sound is actually not a sound at all, but a fjord, and the most renowned of its kind in Fiordland National Park, New Zealand. These fjords were shaped by glacial erosion over millions of years.

Originally named Piopiotahi by the Māori over a millennium ago, European settlers later coined it “Milford Sound.” While both sounds and fjords are valleys filled with seawater, the term “sound” typically refers to a valley formed by river flooding, whereas fjords result from glacial valleys.

Today, Milford Sound is one of New Zealand’s top tourist attractions , drawing nearly 900,000 visitors in 2019 before the pandemic. With its lush native forests, countless waterfalls, and abundant wildlife, it’s easy to see why.

This is one of those must-see places that lives up to its reputation, making it an essential stop on your South Island itinerary .

Will you be visiting both islands on your trip? We also have a 2-week North Island itinerary that you can copy!

English language note: In this article, we’ll be using “fjord” and “fiord” interchangeably.

Milford Sound New Zealand

No matter which company you book with, your boat will follow the same basic route from the ferry terminal to the mouth of the Tasman Sea and back. Below are a few of the incredible sights you can expect to see on your cruise.

Bowen Falls

Bowen Falls Milford Sound New Zealand

At a whopping 162 meters (531 feet), Lady Bowen Falls is the highest waterfall in Milford Sound and the first major landmark you’ll see on your cruise.

Tucked out of sight from the port, rounding the corner to see this dramatic falls is sure to take your breath away. Stand out on the deck of your Milford Sound cruise and you just might be kissed by the ethereal mist.

But Bowen Falls isn’t just an awe-inspiring tourist attraction; she’s also an important resource – this mighty cascade provides power and hydro for the local township.

Fun Fact: Of the many waterfalls in Milford Sound, only two are permanent – Bowen Falls and Stirling Falls. The rest come and go depending on rainfall.

Fairy Falls

Though smaller than some of its neighbors, Fairy Falls is no less breathtaking. The cliffs here are covered in plush moss, creating a verdant backdrop for the tumbling water that contrasts with the imposing rock settings of other Milford Sound waterfalls.

Fairy Falls and neighboring Bridal Veil Falls are best seen after (or during!) a rainfall, as the falls will be bigger and more active.

Seal Rock

Seal Rock Milford Sound New Zealand

Get your camera ready to capture the playful antics of native New Zealand fur seals !

Most of Milford Sound is walled by sheer cliff faces, but there’s one large rock that provides a perfect spot for seals to rest in the sunshine and out of reach of predators.

The aptly named Seal Rock is a favorite among visitors to Milford Sound. It offers an opportunity to see these endearing marine mammals in their natural habitat, napping and sunbathing on the rock or frolicking in the water nearby.

Stirling Falls

Stirling Falls Milford Sound New Zealand

From a distance, your eyes might trick you into thinking Stirling Falls isn’t that big, as the scale is masked by the dramatic mountainous backdrop . But don’t be fooled; over 150 meters (492 feet) tall, Stirling is Milford Sound’s second-highest waterfall.

The majestic Stirling Falls is known for its sheer drop into deep water that allows boats to get close to the base of the cascade. Getting up close and personal with the roaring, pounding falls is a total rush!

Insider Tip: When you head back to your car after the cruise, be sure to check out this scenic lookout. Located behind the parking lot near the information center, it’s an easy 10-minute return walk to a stunning view of Mitre Peak.

There are tons of tour operators offering similar cruises with minor differences (e.g. boat size, food options). Then there are tours that offer additional experiences, such as kayaking or helicopter rides . Some also include transportation to and from Te Anau or Queenstown.

The tour you choose will depend on where you’re staying, how much time you have, your budget, and your interests. Below are some of our top picks for tours that include a Milford Sound scenic cruise.

Doubtful Sound Fiordland National Park New Zealand

Adventurous souls looking for an alternative to Milford Sound can book a tour to the far more remote (and far less crowded) Doubtful Sound.

The Māori named it Patea , meaning “place of silence”, so Doubtful is also sometimes called “The Sound of Silence” ( cue Simon & Garfunkel! ). But again, this is a fjord, not a sound.

Whereas Milford is heavily trafficked by tourists, Doubtful Sound is an untouched wilderness that has barely changed since it was discovered. There’s no settlement here and no way to self-drive, so many travelers skip it.

But those who make the trip are handsomely rewarded with a tranquil escape where you can marvel at the awe-inspiring landscapes while listening to birdsong echoing off the cliffs.

Do it yourself:

The only way to visit Doubtful Sound is to join a tour departing from Queenstown, Te Anau, or Manapouri. There are lots of options to choose from, all with varying prices and inclusions. Click the button below to find a tour that works for you.

Our personal pick: This overnight Doubtful Sound cruise sounds magical! It is on our list for our next NZ trip! Our Director of Content, Amanda, did this exact cruise when she visited New Zealand with her family and raves about the experience.

Milford Sound cruise New Zealand

Now that you have our recommendations for a Milford Sound cruise, here are some other things to consider as you plan your trip.

How long is the Milford Sound cruise?

There are tons of tour options that vary drastically in length depending on what else is included, but the cruise itself usually takes about 2 hours.

How much does a Milford Sound cruise cost?

Milford Sound cruise New Zealand

If you’re JUST looking at the cruise itself, the cost is usually around $80-90 USD per person. Again, if you choose a tour with more to it (e.g. transportation, kayaking, helicopter ride, etc.), you’ll need to budget more.

Also, keep in mind that you may need to buy lunch or pack your own if it isn’t included in your tour.

Psst! Check out our money-saving tips for traveling New Zealand on a budget .

Will the cruise still run if it’s raining?

Milford Sound cruise New Zealand

Absolutely! In fact, locals say that Milford Sound is even better in the rain.

A good rainfall can create hundreds, if not thousands, of temporary waterfalls tumbling down the cliffs surrounding the fjord. Plus, the extra mist adds an ethereal, otherworldly quality to the experience.

That said, some tours may be affected by weather conditions – especially those that include airplane or helicopter flights.

Fun Fact: The heavy rainfall in Fiordlands creates a unique effect in Milford Sound. Rainwater collects tannins as it runs through the forest into the fjord, making it darker. Because the fresh water is less dense than the seawater, it sits on top, forming a dark layer that blocks light and creates an environment usually only found in the deep ocean.

Do cruise ships go into Milford Sound?

Currently, yes. However, the New Zealand government initiative Milford Opportunities has recommended that cruise ships be banned from entering the fjord in an effort to help relieve stress on this delicate environment.

Is Milford Sound really worth it?

Milford Sound cruise New Zealand

YES. Milford Sound is more than just “doing the thing in the place”. It is truly a bucket-list experience and photos don’t do it justice.

If you can swing it, we’d recommend doing something more immersive than just the cruise, like this tour that combines a boat cruise and kayaking.

Insider tips for booking your Milford Sound cruise

Milford Sound cruise New Zealand

Here are a few tips and tricks that will be helpful when booking your Milford Sound cruise:

  • Book your tour in advance . Whether you’re just doing the cruise or a longer tour, book as early as you can to avoid disappointment.
  • There’s only one ferry terminal , and it’s shared by all the cruise operators. Each company has its own check-in desk inside.
  • The public car park is 300 meters from the terminal , so be sure to give yourself an extra 15-20 minutes before your check-in time to walk down.
  • Lunch may or may not be included. Be sure to double check with your tour provider so you know if you need to pack or buy lunch.
  • Wear layers, particularly a rain jacket. This is one of the rainiest places on Earth and even if it looks like a gorgeous day, the weather can change on a dime. Plus, you might get wet in the mist from the falls.
  • The best views are on the upper deck , but if you want or need to be able to sit, arrive early so you can claim a good seat.

South+Island+New+Zealand+Itinerary+Road+Trip+Milford+Sound

Milford Sound is one of those places you just have to visit when you’re in New Zealand. And even though it’s on most NZ itineraries , it is worthy of the hype.

I personally think a Milford Sound cruise is an absolute must-do .

The only way to really experience Milford Sound and see its nooks and crannies and hidden waterfalls is by boat. Plus, the boat tours are really affordable, considering where you are.

I’ll be honest and say there wasn’t anything too memorable about the boat, the crew, or the tour itself. The scenery is what you come for.

Now, the majority of boat tours are more or less the same. The biggest difference is the size of the boat. We’d recommend booking a smaller boat if it works with your budget and timeframe.

Our biggest regret is that we didn’t do more than the boat tour.

I would have loved to do a kayaking tour of Milford Sound as well. I’ve heard incredible things and on our next visit (yes, there will be a next visit!) , we will definitely do a kayaking tour too.

Do yourself a favor and book a Milford Sound cruise if it is at all of interest to you. This is the one we’d choose because it combines a boat cruise with a kayak tour – the best of both worlds!

We also think this overnight cruise in Doubtful Sound looks incredible. Further off the tourist path than Milford Sound, this would feel like discovering a hidden gem of sorts. Plus, the tour includes a 3-course dinner and earns rave reviews.

Can you imagine waking up in a place like this?! Definitely a splurge-worthy experience that is on our personal bucket list!

Milford Sound

In our opinion, the best time to visit Milford Sound is in November. Deciding on when to take your Milford Sound cruise can be tricky, but here’s why we think November is the sweet spot:

  • Temperatures are comfortable. This is the shoulder season between New Zealand’s spring and summer, so things are starting to warm up and the days are getting longer.
  • You’ll avoid peak tourist season. December to February is New Zealand’s summer, which sees bigger crowds and higher prices.
  • You have a better chance of seeing wildlife , as marine life such as penguins and seals are more active in the spring and fall.
  • You actually want some rain. That’s right, with atmospheric mists and too many waterfalls to count, Milford Sound is at its best in the rain! The South Island’s west coast is notorious for rain at all times of year, but December and January are the wettest months.

We would personally avoid visiting during peak tourist season (December to February), when Milford Sound will be at its most crowded and huge cruise ships might be coming into the fjord. We would also avoid visiting in the winter (June to August), when you may be faced with icy driving conditions and closures on Milford Road.

For an in-depth guide on the regional seasons, weather patterns, and other factors, check out our complete guide to the best time to visit New Zealand .

How to get to Miford Sound

Milford Sound Cruise New Zealand

While some tours include transportation to and from Te Anau or Queenstown, you might be driving to Milford Sound yourself if you’re renting a car or doing a campervan road trip . There’s only one way in, and it’s pretty freakin’ spectacular: the Milford Road.

From Te Anau

Milford Road New Zealand

Distance: 118 km / 73 miles

Time: 2.5 hours minimum

The section of State Highway 94 from Te Anau to Milford Sound is known as the Milford Road . The route is straightforward since you’ll be staying on 94 the whole time, but there are some important things you need to know before making this drive:

  • Give yourself more time than Google Maps says. Traffic will be heavy as everyone makes their way to Milford Sound for their cruises. Plus, this drive is so astonishingly beautiful that you’ll want to stop at landmarks along the way. Trust me.
  • There are no services on this road. Make sure you have a full tank leaving Te Anau, as well as snacks, water, and anything else you need for the drive.
  • There’s also no cell service , so download your maps before heading out. This article  explains how to download offline Google Maps if you’re not familiar with the process.
  • It can be dangerous in the winter , and the road will close if there’s an avalanche advisory. Check conditions before leaving and bring emergency gear, including snow chains.

From Queenstown

Devil's Staircase Queenstown New Zealand

Distance: 288 km / 179 miles

Time: 4.5 hours minimum

Though it may look closer on a map, there’s no route to Milford Sound from Queenstown as the crow flies, so you’ll still need to go through Te Anau.

Take State Highway 6 out of Queenstown, heading south along the shores of Lake Wakatipu. In Lowther, turn right onto Highway 97. Turn right again in Mossburn onto Highway 94, which you’ll stay on all the way to Milford Sound. Don’t forget to stop in Te Anau for gas and supplies .

Before you attempt this drive, make sure you read our road trip from Queenstown to Milford Sound guide. You’ll thank us later!

Staying in Queenstown? You’ll definitely want to check out our list of the best things to do in this adventurous city!

What to wear and pack for a Milford Sound cruise

Milford Sound Cruise New Zealand

  • Wear layers
  • Waterproof rain jacket: choose one that also works as a windbreaker if possible, as it can get very windy
  • Sunscreen: one of the most important things to know about New Zealand is there is a hole in the ozone layer above the country, meaning you’ll likely burn more quickly than you’re used to
  • Snacks (there aren’t many food options in Milford Sound)
  • Battery bank : to keep your phone charged
  • Gloves and a beanie: these are nice to have if you’re doing an early morning Milford Sound cruise
  • Pressure point bands to prevent seasickness
  • Travel insurance : We NEVER travel without it!

What is Milford Sound & why is it so popular?

Milford Sound, located in Fiordland National Park on New Zealand’s South Island , is the most famous tourist destination in all of New Zealand and often heralded as the 8th Wonder of the World!

This magnificent natural oasis is known for tall mountain peaks, the tallest (Mitre Peak) stands at 1692 m (5551 ft) above sea level, and cascading waterfalls that only double in power when it rains – which it does often! Milford Sound is one of the wettest places in the world seeing almost 7000 mm (275 in) of rain a year.

Despite its name, Milford Sound isn’t actually a sound. It’s a fiord, formed by eroding glaciers, and is the only fiord accessible by road in New Zealand. Over 1000 years ago, Maori people would hunt, fish and collect precious rock in Milford Sound. Europeans discovered the area in 1823 and named it Milford Sound in honour of Milford Haven in Wales.

Milford Sound’s remote location, icon status (it’s part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and undeniable beauty have made it popular amongst locals and tourists in New Zealand . The best way to experience the area is a cruise in Milford Sound, allowing you to explore all 16 km (10 miles) of the fiord, witness Lady Bowen Falls and other waterfalls up close, and keep an eye out for resident dolphins, seals and penguins!

How do you get from Queenstown to Milford Sound?

The journey from Queenstown to Milford Sound takes about 4 hours by car/bus or 40 minutes by plane . You can self-drive, join a bus tour or take a scenic plane ride. You can check out the bus and plane Milford Sound tour options below!

In my opinion, the journey from Queenstown to Milford Sound is actually part of the Milford Sound experience. While long and winding, there are so many scenic stops to make along the way that will make the four hours zoom by. Check out all of the best places to stop along the road from Queenstown to Milford Sound .

Milford Sound tour options

There are many Milford Sound tour options to choose from to suit your time, budget and preferred mode of transportation. First, you’ll have to decide how long you want to be on the water:

  • Day cruise (usually 2-3 hours)
  • Overnight cruise

Next, you’ll need to decide how you want to arrive:

  • Self-drive with a rental car
  • Bus to Milford Sound
  • Fly to Milford Sound

Most bus and flight tours will include transportation from Queenstown to Milford Sound and back, plus most will include your day cruise when you arrive and stops along the way. There are also extras you can add on, like a kayak Milford Sound tour , Milford Track guided hike or a helicopter glacier landing . You can also choose to take a bus tour to Milford Sound from Te Anau instead of from Queenstown.

There are pros and cons to each tour option. Obviously a Milford Sound overnight cruise will give you more time on the fiord, but it will also cost you more money and time than a day cruise. Self-driving allows you to make lots of stops along the way and avoid the crowds following the tour bus schedule, but is not as relaxing as sitting back on a bus or plane. Flying, while the most expensive way to get to Milford Sound, is also the fastest and, from what I hear, the most beautiful.

When we visited Milford Sound in April 2023, we opted to self-drive and go on a day cruise . For us, self-driving made sense as we had already picked up a rental car from Queenstown and would need it for the next leg of our trip to Wanaka and Aoraki Mt Cook .

Plus, by that point, Colin had driven all around the North Island and felt confident driving to Milford Sound. Self-driving also allowed us to make lots of scenic stops along the way, which was half the fun of visiting Milford Sound. And we opted for a day cruise on Milford because we had decided to splurge on the overnight Doubtful Sound cruise .

When is the best time of day to visit Milford Sound? When is the best time of year?

They say the best time of day to visit Milford Sound is first thing in the morning when the light is shining beautifully on the fiord and the crowds from Queenstown haven’t descended yet.

And while I’m sure morning is a great option, I’d also recommend visiting in the afternoon and taking the last boat of the day . That way, you have all day to drive to Milford Sound, making lots of stops along the way. You also miss the tour bus crowds, who will be leaving as you arrive, and you get to enjoy a bit of sunset on the water.

In terms of seasons, it’s best to visit Milford Sound in early autumn or late spring when you have decent weather, manageable crowds, and the best shot of seeing penguins and seals.

Keep in mind that as one of the wettest places on earth, you will likely experience rain in Milford Sound regardless of when you visit. In fact, summer is actually the rainiest time in Milford! But in summer, you’ll also be fighting for a good view with everyone else on their holidays. And in winter, sometimes the road to Milford closes due to extreme flooding, avalanche warnings and other weather events.

waterfalls seen on our Milford Sound cruise in New Zealand

That being said, you can cruise in Milford Sound year-round and as long as you can get there safely, there isn’t a bad time to visit. Each season offers something different for visitors, whether that be snowcapped mountains, rain-fuelled waterfalls, better wildlife viewing or fewer crowds.

Don’t forget: If you’re coming from the northern hemisphere, the seasons are reversed in Aotearoa New Zealand! So the busy and rainy summer season is from December to March.

What should you wear for a cruise in Milford Sound?

Like most of New Zealand, the dress code is comfortable, casual and weather-appropriate in Milford Sound. Average temperature in Milford Sound ranges from 4-18C (39-64F) year round, so dress for the season you’re visiting in but pack a few extra layers in case it gets cold on the boat.

You’ll want a waterproof outer layer so you can stand on the boat deck in the rain – or under a misting waterfall! Even if it’s not raining, a waterproof outer layer also makes good wind protection. And for the rare sunny days, sunscreen and sunglasses are always a good idea.

How much time do you need in Milford Sound?

How much time you need in Milford Sound will depend on the length of your cruise. Most day cruises are 2-3 hours in length , but you’ll want to budget more time in Milford Sound than just that. For starters, you’ll need time to get to Milford Sound via car, tour bus or flight. The route there is very scenic, with lots of stops you’ll want to make. There are also one lane roads, such as the Homer Tunnel, which can slow you down.

Once you reach Milford Sound, you’ll want to give yourself lots of time to park (and pay!), use the restroom and check in early for your cruise. There is also a cafe and gift shop, as well as walking trails and viewpoints to enjoy. I’d suggest arriving about an hour before your cruise to make the most of the area, and to give yourself a healthy buffer in case your drive there takes longer than anticipated.

waterfall and sunset on Milford Sound, New Zealand

So if you’re self-driving from Queenstown to Milford Sound , you’re looking at 4+ hours to get there, an hour to park and check in, and 2-3 hours of cruising. Because the road there has so many stops, including a lunch break you’ll probably want to take in Te Anau, I’d actually give yourself 5 hours for the drive. So all in, that’s 7-9 hours to get from Queenstown to Milford Sound and enjoy your Milford Sound cruise .

Because it’s such a long day, I highly recommend staying overnight (more on that below!) and not trying to drive back to Queenstown. You can dedicate a few days of your New Zealand trip to the Fiordland area discovering Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, Te Anau and other natural wonders nearby.

If you’re short on time, opt for a bus tour where someone else is responsible for the 8+ hours of driving to get there and back. Or if you’re really short on time, choose a flight tour which gets you to Milford Sound in under an hour!

Of course, if you’re going on an overnight cruise in Milford Sound or wanting to walk part or all of the Milford Track, you’ll need even more time in the area! Plan on a couple of nights to give you time to get there, enjoy your activities and get back.

Milford Sound lodging: Where to stay at Milford Sound

Unfortunately, Milford Sound lodging options are limited. There is only really one place to stay right at Milford Sound and freedom camping is prohibited. If you want to stay at Milford Sound, you’ll need to check into the luxurious Milford Sound Lodge and stay in one of their beautiful chalets with a view. Alternatively, they have a campervan park if you’re travelling in a self-contained vehicle (no tent camping).

Many people choose to stay in Te Anau when visiting Milford Sound, where there are more lodging options. Keep in mind that Te Anau is still a two hour drive from Milford Sound without stops (and you’ll want to make stops!).

If you have the budget for it, I’d highly recommend staying at the Milford Sound Lodge. I haven’t stayed myself but have watched videos and read reviews and it truly looks like a stunning experience. Plus, staying at the lodge would allow you to make the most of your time in Milford Sound since you won’t have to drive hours away to your accommodation. You’ll also get to enjoy the waterfront long after all the day trippers have left.

Eglinton Valley Camp cabin room in Te Anau Downs in Fiordland National Park, affordable Milford Sound lodging, New Zealand

However, if you don’t have the budget for the Milford Sound Lodge and don’t want to drive all the way back to Te Anau or Queenstown, there is another option. We stayed at Eglinton Valley Camp , just an hour outside of Milford Sound, and I highly recommend it.

We were in one of their self-contained cabins and it was spacious, comfortable and cozy with our own kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. It was also affordable – less than half what a chalet would cost you at Milford Sound Lodge – and an easy drive from Milford.

My cruise in Milford Sound experience

Our cruise in Milford Sound started when we pulled into the Milford Sound Tourism car park. Many have complained about the steep cost to park; it was previously $25 NZD for five hours of parking but as of June 2023 it’s $10 NZD/hour (credit or debit only).

If that’s too steep, there is free parking available at Deepwater Basin, but it will require you to walk for about 30 minutes to reach the Visitor Terminal. If you do opt for paid parking, don’t forget to pay! There are parking metres throughout the lot and two in the Visitor Terminal. If you forget, you’ll be ticketed and suddenly $20-30 won’t seem so bad!

After parking, we followed the trail to the Visitor Terminal where all of the cruise ships depart from. There, each company has a desk where you can check in for your cruise. You can also use the restroom, buy souvenirs, and read up about the history and wildlife in the area. If you need more extensive souvenir or snack options, these are located back where you parked your car.

Riana from Teaspoon of Adventure posing at Milford Sound, New Zealand

Once we checked in, we headed out to where the ships were docked. Colin and I walked out onto the bluff to take some photos and get ready for our cruise. Our cruise in Milford Sound was with Mitre Peak Cruises and was the last cruise of the day, giving us the entire fiord to ourselves.

When boarding started, Colin and I raced to the second level to secure seats on the open deck, as it was a rare sunny afternoon. We sat on the left (facing the Visitor Terminal) but I would recommend sitting on the right, as the views seemed to be slightly better.

As we started cruising, I was pretty immediately blown away by what we were seeing. Our boat got up close to the mountains on either side of the fiord, and it was so interesting to study the rock faces and see the vegetation growing on them. It was wild to see trees almost growing sideways and plant life that looked more similar to what I’d find in a salad bowl than on the side of a mountain.

Turning around and seeing how the steep mountains fell into the water was postcard perfect!

cruise in Milford Sound, Fiordland, New Zealand

Unfortunately the waterfalls in Milford Sound were not at their full power, but that’s the trade-off for getting a sunny day. On rainy days, the rain adds to the water running off the mountains, creating tons of waterfalls and mist along the fiord. But we were still able to see a few small waterfalls on the way out.

On our way back to the harbour, our cruise in Milford Sound stopped under one of the largest permanent waterfalls so we could witness its power up close. We felt the mist but I’ve seen videos of this same waterfall on a rainy day and people get soaked!

Our cruise in Milford Sound also went out to the Tasman Sea, but lucky for me, it was only a short visit. Compared to the calm fiord waters, the Tasman Sea was rocky and windy, which isn’t great for those of us who get seasick. Our captain had hoped we could see a colony of seals or penguins from out there but sadly, we did not.

However, we did have one incredible wildlife encounter! The highlight of our cruise in Milford Sound was when a pod of dolphins swam along our boat. The captain explained that families of dolphins live in the fiord and are used to the boats coming out. They swam right up to us and dove alongside our boat for a few minutes. It was so cool to see dolphins up close in the wild and luckily, it happened on the side of the boat where we were sitting!

Check out a video of the dolphins we saw on our Milford Sound cruise below!

Milford Sound tour review

Our cruise in Milford Sound was with Mitre Peak Cruises and I really enjoyed the experience. We booked the last cruise of the day, 3:55 pm, and it seems like Mitre Peak Cruises is the only company that has a boat going out at this time. That meant we had the entire fiord to ourselves with no other boats! If we had booked an earlier cruise, we’d likely have five or six other boats out there as it seems like most companies have sailings in the morning and early afternoon.

The boat itself was nice and not too crowded. It wasn’t a huge cruise ship, and so didn’t take a ton of people, but it still felt full. Because we were some of the first people on and headed straight to the top deck, Colin and I were able to secure seats in the outside area with the best views. But even people who boarded later still had plenty of room to stand outside or sit inside.

The only time it felt a bit too crowded was when something exciting happened, like a pod of dolphins swimming by, and everyone wanted to take photos.

Mitre Peak Cruises boat pulling into the harbour at Milford Sound, New Zealand

Throughout the boat tour there was supposed to be an audio guide explaining what we were seeing, the history of the area, local wildlife, etc. I say “supposed” because while the audio guide did technically happen, the speakers on the outside deck were so poor that we could barely make out what the speaker was saying. Honestly, it didn’t bother me too much, as I mostly wanted to cruise in Milford Sound for the views. But if you’re someone who loves a guided audio tour, I’d suggest sitting elsewhere in the boat with better speakers.

We paid $69 NZD ($56 CAD/$42 USD/€38/£33) per person for our two hour Milford Sound tour cruise in April 2023. Compared to the cost of some of our other activities in New Zealand , I think $69 was super reasonable for the incredible experience we had seeing Milford Sound up close (though we did snag a discount, I would have gladly paid more!). I’d highly recommend our tour or any cruise in Milford Sound. Even if you go on a different boat, pay a little more or sail earlier in the day, I think you’ll have an amazing time experiencing Milford Sound!

Conclusion: Enjoy your cruise in Milford Sound

Hopefully I’ve convinced you to add a cruise in Milford Sound to your New Zealand bucket list! Honestly, this cruise experience was one of the highlights of our time in Aotearoa and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting New Zealand. Whether you drive, bus or fly there, whether you have two hours or two nights on the water, and whatever the weather, I know you’ll appreciate the magic of Milford Sound!

An amazing experience and the natural beauty of this part of the country takes your breath away. The Captain provided great commentary and an 'optical illusion' when looking up which was magical. All crew were helpful even offering to take photos. This boat holds up to 230 people but due to being in 'red traffic light' covid framework there were only 22 people on board. You can see how much these tour company must be struggling at the moment. We parked in the 'free parking' area which then takes a 25min walk to the terminal which is absolutely doable on a great day, may not be do great on a wet day. Read more Written February 6, 2022

Sights of Elektrostal, Moscow region

2024 Author : Harold Hamphrey | [email protected] . Last modified: 2023-12-17 10:06

In the Moscow region there is a small cozy town Elektrostal. Its sights for the most part have no historical value due to the fact that the city has a relatively small history. But for a visiting tourist or city dweller, they will be of interest. There is something to see, where to go to have an exciting leisure time.

Today the population of the city is 158 thousand people. Until the beginning of the 20th century there were several small workers' settlements here. After the opening of the electrometallurgical and equipment factories, the place began to be called the natural boundary of Calm. The construction of the railway made this settlement accessible, and workers and families flocked here to earn money. In 1925, the station was named Elektrostal, and the rapid increase in population allowed the village to receive the status of a city.

The founder of the city is a prominent Russian industrialist Nikolai Vtorov. It was he who opened the plant here, creating, in fact, a city-forming enterprise that is still operating. In Soviet times, it was a closed facility, and it was not easy to get to work here.

Today Elektrostal is a promising industrial city with a great future and a heroic past. It bears the proud name "City of Military and Labor Glory".

You can learn about the sights of Elektrostal with descriptions and photos here. There are places for walking, outdoor activities and cultural development.

sights of the electric steel of the Moscow region

Those who come to the city by train are met by a monument to the metallurgist. It was installed in November 2017 for the 100th anniversary of the Elektrostal plant. The attraction is made in the style of constructivism. The monument quickly won the love of the townspeople, because this city is supported by ordinary workers.

Elektrost altsy and the founding father of the plant, Nikolai Vtorov, are honored. In 2002, a monument was opened in honor of him, which became a landmark of the city of Elektrostal. The bronze sculpture is installed on the site where once stood a monument to the leader of the world proletariat, V. I. Lenin. Times change, characters change. Today, the plant, founded a century ago, is the largest in Russia. Vtorov himself, whose fortune was estimated at 60 million rubles in gold, according to Forbes magazine, was the owner of the largest capital at the beginning of the century. He was a banker, an industrialist, an entrepreneur, a man of action.

The monument was erected byinitiative of the townspeople who wished to perpetuate the monument to the great man.

One of the popular places for spending weekends and evenings among citizens and guests of the city is the Park of Culture and Leisure. Here you can ride attractions for children and adults, play slot machines, rollerblade or bike. The park is divided into two zones. Fans of unhurried walks in the fresh air make a promenade on the Quiet Alley, and those who prefer outdoor activities flock to the Entertainment Alley. The park has a summer stage, where concerts and cafes are regularly held.

Elektrostal attractions

Until 1999, there was no central museum among the attractions of Elektrostal in the Moscow Region. The expositions were exhibited in schools, the house of culture, in factory museums. The city was closed, so there was no large influx of tourists and visitors. The appearance of the historical and art museum made it possible for residents and guests of the city to learn a lot of useful information about their native land, the formation of the production process, and the difficult years of the war. The exposition consists of paintings by local artists, historical artifacts, household items, documents, books and much more. The collection is updated regularly. It also hosts outdoor exhibitions, which are always popular with the townspeople.

One of the main attractions of Elektrostal, the photo of which is available to almost every resident or visitor, is the Main Alley. On herpassers-by like to stroll along shady paths, townspeople rest by the fountain after a hard shift at the plant. Flower beds are the decoration of the alley. In 2006, a flower festival was held here for the first time, which has become traditional. Each enterprise of the city and private individuals give residents a real composition of fresh flowers, which pleases with bright colors all summer long. A riot of colors, aromas and a flight of fantasy reigns here. Walking through the park, you can see Snow White with a basket, a bright well, a multi-tiered cake made from fresh flowers, hearts of lovers or a fabulous house. It is almost impossible not to take a photo against the background of these compositions.

There is a cultural center in the city. It hosts performances by local creative teams and visiting stars, performances and circus performances.

In 1971, the ice palace "Crystal" was opened in the city. Almost immediately, a children's and youth hockey team was organized, which gained sports fame. This is the home sports arena for the Elektrostal hockey team. Matches of different levels are held on the ice.

There are sections for children who go in for hockey or figure skating. Citizens come here with their families to cheer for their favorite team or go ice skating.

Elektrostal is a city with a heroic past. During the war years, more than 12 thousand citizens came to the recruiting station and went to the front to defend their homeland. Almost 4 thousand of them did not return from the battle. To these heroesdedicated to the memorial complex with the inextinguishable Eternal Flame, opened in 1968

But the electricians took part in the war in Afghanistan and Chechnya. By decision of the city authorities, their memory is also immortalized in the memorial complex.

It has become a good tradition for newlyweds to lay flowers at this monument.

attractions of the city of Elektrostal

In 1999, a museum and exhibition complex was opened in the city, where, in addition to the exhibition hall, there are numerous circles for children, classes for young people, and a creative workshop. Various festivals, exhibitions, city holidays and other events are held within the walls and on the territory of the complex, which attract many spectators.

Elektrostal attractions

Listing the sights of Elektrostal, it is impossible not to mention the temples. There are several of them in the city: the church of St. John of Kronstadt, St. Andrew's Church, the hospital church of St. Panteleimon. Another new church is being built. In appearance, the temples look ancient, monumental, in the Novgorod style. But they were all built at the end of the 20th century.

Let there be no ancient artifacts among the sights of Elektrostal. But on the other hand, all of them are connected with the history of the city, with everyday work and military exploits of ordinary residents.

  1. Milford Sound Cruise- Ok for people who get seasick?

Milford Sound is a protected waterway and it doesn't usually get very rough. The larger boats don't usually move around much. If it's very rough the skipper will stay inside the fiord, but of course his idea ...

As a rule the overnight cruise spends about the same amount of time in the Tasman as the day cruise. However the overnight cruise is far less structured, and the captain & crew can pretty much please themselves what they do to keep the passengers entertained. In some instances this MAY include fishing, and as the whole of Milford Sound is a marine sanctuary this has to be outside the sound.

Those prone to seasickness might feel a bit unwell if you cruise as far as the Tasman Sea - however the duration is short and the motion is slight.
