19-Deck Cruise Ship as Long as Eiffel Tower Is High Makes New Home in Brooklyn

Nyc becomes msc cruises' third u.s. homeport, allowing the cruise line to offer year-round sailings from the northeast for the first time, by nbc new york staff • published april 21, 2023 • updated on april 21, 2023 at 3:04 pm.

The world's third-largest and fastest-growing cruise line, as MSC Cruises describes itself, sailed into New York City's Brooklyn Cruise Terminal this week with a glamorous megaship offering year-round excursions to select destinations.

MSC Meraviglia, a 1,036-foot long (France's Eiffel Tower is 1,083 feet high, and only if you include the tip), 213-foot-tall, 19-deck floater capable of holding more than 5,700 guests is a vacation in its own right, the cruise line says.

Fortunately, it will also take you from Brooklyn to a number of (warmer) locations. Not all options will be available immediately. Find the list of itineraries and start dates at the bottom of this page from MSC Cruises.

New cruise ship MSC Meraviglia arrives at Brooklyn Cruise Terminal

Crystal Cranmore Image

RED HOOK, Brooklyn (WABC) -- A brand new cruise ship has made a grand entrance into the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in Red Hook.

The MSC Meraviglia, Italian for wonder, arrived at its new home port on Thursday morning, and is ready to launch year-round sailings from Brooklyn.

The boat will be the first cruise ship here all year long. Officials say the ship will bring more than 10,000 full time-equivalent jobs to the terminal.

The ship will soon offer trips to the Bahamas, Florida, Bermuda, and Canada, among other destinations.

City leaders say this ship will bring job and tourism opportunities for thousands in New York City. The mayor is expecting an economic boom of $102 million a year in spending from tourists.

"We're anticipating 219,000 passengers arriving in NYC per year," Mayor Adams said. "Anytime we have international travelers, spend money, spend money, spend money."

The news of the ship is exciting for many, but the terminal itself was the subject of controversy when migrants were first moved there as a temporary shelter.

Just last month, the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal was used to house asylum seekers .

The hope was to ease the strain on city shelters, but some advocates were not happy with the conditions . They were compared to detention centers.

At one point, Adams stayed at the terminal overnight on one of the coldest night's of the year to show the temporary setup was warm enough.

Officials say their plan was always to move the men when cruise season started. Those migrants went to new relief centers in Bushwick and Times Square.

The ship's first voyage from Brooklyn is Saturday.

"The uniqueness of New York City really lies in our waterways and our harbors that bring people in and out," Adams said.

One of the world’s biggest cruise ships is now anchored in Brooklyn

The 19-story boat is as long as the Eiffel Tower is high.

Melissa Kravitz Hoeffner

A floating city has made its way to Red Hook —and it’s taller than many Brooklyn apartment buildings.

The MSC Meraviglia, a new ship by MSC Cruises, docked at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal over the weekend and will use the port as its home base for itineraries between The Bahamas, Florida, Canada, New England and Bermuda.

The ship itself is like an extra neighborhood: Accommodating over 5,700 guests (plus staff), the cruise ship is 1,036 feet long, as high as the Eiffel Tower, and has 19 decks standing at 213 feet tall. Inside, the ship hosts a 985-seat Broadway-style theater, a 6,000-square-foot gym, plus 20 bars, 12 restaurants and a handful of pools and hot tubs.

Like most cruise lines, MSC is headquartered overseas, in Geneva, Switzerland, but the local docking is still predicted to influence New York’s local economy. So far, 150 New Yorkers have been hired to facilitate terminal operations and the ship itself has 10,000 full-time-equivalent jobs to fill.

MSC Cruises

Those who want to set sail from New York can choose from multiple itineraries, ranging from 5 to 11 nights. Upcoming trips include sailings to The Bahamas and Florida, August voyages to Bermuda and a fall New England trip to Newport, Boston and Portland in the U.S and Saint John, Halifax, Charlottetown, and Sydney in Canada. Trips start at $609 per person, for a week at sea with free wifi and unlimited food and drinks. Honestly, that's a whole lot cheaper than dining in New York.

“When we chose New York as the next step in our North American expansion, we knew that MSC Meraviglia would be the perfect ship, given her versatility and offerings for a wide variety of climates," said Rubén Rodríguez, President of MSC Cruises USA. "She’s big and innovative, she offers something for everyone, and now she’s more accessible than ever for our guests in and around New York. We’re thrilled to give guests from the Northeast a direct link to our private destination—Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve—which is part of our fantastic itineraries to The Bahamas. As the year goes on, they’ll have other options like spending several days exploring Bermuda, or heading north for the breathtaking fall foliage in Canada and New England."

One of the World’s Largest Cruise Ships Is About to Come to Brooklyn. So Will Its Toxic Exhaust.

In December, Mayor Eric Adams announced to great fanfare MSC Cruise’s forthcoming year-round operations from the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal (BCT). The ships, the mayor said, would bring thousands of tourist dollars to New York City.

But the vessels will also bring toxic diesel exhaust to the local community.

Over the course of a single day, a docked and idling cruise ship powered by diesel fuel can emit as much pollution as 34,409 long-haul trucks idling for that same time, according to one analysis .

The Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in Red Hook is the only port on the east coast with a solution to that problem: shore power. By plugging into the city’s electric grid, cruise ships docked there should be able to keep running without burning diesel.

But because of the terminal’s shore power design and the lack of a regulatory mechanism to compel adoption, the system hasn’t been fully used since its 2016 installation.

In 2022, just about a third of the ships visiting the port have plugged in, according to the EDC. The rest have continued to burn fuel.

That will certainly be the case when the MSC’s Meraviglia, one of the largest cruise ships in the world, first launches from Red Hook this coming April. It won’t be able to plug in because of where its connector is located, leading it to spew pollution into Red Hook’s air.

In April 2021, when Adams was still Brooklyn Borough President, he pledged funds to buy the equipment necessary to fix the terminal’s shore power system, so more ships could use it.

That hasn’t happened yet, though Jeff Holmes, a spokesperson for the Economic Development Corporation, which administers the BCT, said ordering is in the works, with installation expected by the end of the year.

“That’s a very big timeframe,” said Councilmember Alexa Aviles, who represents the neighborhood. “It’s something that is certainly important to the Red Hook community because we all really know how polluting cruise ships that are burning fossil fuel are.”

Adam Armstrong, a musician who lived near the docks for almost two decades and became an activist against ship pollution , questioned why the work hadn’t been done.

“To bring ships into Brooklyn that can’t plug in and subject the population to unnecessarily dangerous diesel fumes — it’s just wrong… It’s worse than embarrassing because it’s actually having a public health impact and a climate impact,” said Armstrong, who now lives in Bay Ridge. “I raised my kids in the shadow of those cruise ships. I still wonder what the health effects on them have been after being exposed to all that stuff.”

The Plug Won’t Fit

Diesel emissions can be especially harmful to the respiratory health of people who live in coastal areas where cruise ships often visit . Exposure to the pollution can cause or exacerbate conditions like asthma, as well as heart and lung disease.

Though carbon emissions from marine vehicles amount to a small fraction of the city’s total transportation emissions , they contribute to the warming of the planet, which is making extreme storms worse.

BCT’s $21 million shore power system was meant to eliminate roughly the same amount of carbon dioxide as getting nearly 300 cars off the road for a year, according to a 2011 press release from the Bloomberg administration — as well as 95 tons of nitrous oxide and 6.5 tons of particulate matter.

But as the New York Times reported in 2019, there’s no regulatory mechanism that compels ships to plug into the system — and that’s if they are able to.

msc cruise line brooklyn ny

At BCT, the shore power crane’s sockets align with the electrical sockets on the Queen Mary 2, run by Cunard, and some of the smaller cruise ships run by Princess — all of which have docked in Red Hook. But other ships don’t align, as is the case for MSC’s Meraviglia.

In order to allow more ships to plug into the system, EDC plans to make $1 million worth of upgrades over the next year as part of a $30 million capital investment, Holmes said. That $1 million includes the $750,000 Adams committed in 2021 to pay for a “cable positioning device” to facilitate ships’ connections.

A spokesperson for EDC said the agency is in the process of ordering that equipment and plans to install it by the end of the year.

“We would like shore power because we have a strong sense that it will … minimize emissions, partially combustible hydrocarbons and other associated diesel combustion-related emissions from on-ship generators,” said Hildegaard Link, chair of the Resilient Red Hook committee.

Until then, the ships that are set up to connect to shore power but aren’t compatible with what’s at BCT will burn fuel while idling.

That’s true for MSC’s Meraviglia, which, according to the EDC, has a connection located on the side of the vessel that won’t be closest to the pier when it docks — making it unable to plug in. MSC Cruises did not respond to requests for comment.

Briana Latter, a spokesperson for Princess Cruises, said all 15 ships in the company’s fleet are set up to connect to shore power, but until EDC upgrades the system, its larger cruise ships cannot use it.

Latter said the company’s policy is to connect to shore power “as often as possible, providing that the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal shore power connection points are suitably positioned to connect our vessels.”

A spokesperson for Cunard said it uses shore power but did not answer a question about how often.

What About Manhattan?

Also affecting the use of shore power at BCT is the availability of electricity from the grid, according to a 2022 report on the technology by the Environmental Protection Agency. During times of high electrical demand — like during heat waves — the shore power system, which has no backup, may not work.

Con Edison, the electric utility serving New York City, has received no requests for system redesigns or upgrades at BCT, spokesperson Jamie McShane told THE CITY.

While cruise ships are expected to visit BCT 66 times in 2023, they’re due to be at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal 141 times this year, according to the NY Cruises schedule.

Earlier this month the Economic Development Corporation allocated $15 million in capital funds originally earmarked for the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal to the Manhattan Cruise Terminal, as THE CITY recently reported . But so far none of that money is earmarked for shore power there.

msc cruise line brooklyn ny

In the same 2022 report, the EPA concluded the Manhattan location’s complex local grid would result in high costs for shore power and the “constrained” nature of the terminal itself would make installing shore power challenging.

The EDC will undertake a feasibility study to determine what it’d need to install shore power there.

Not Just Cruise Ships

Air pollution is an issue that’s top of mind for Red Hook locals and the officials that represent them, as they’ve been working to control the proliferation of e-commerce warehouses in the community, which deliver traffic as well as packages.

“We’ve got all these trucks coming down Van Brunt Street now and then we’re going to have the additional pollution from the cruise terminals,” said Jim Tampakis, who runs the maritime supplier Marine Spares International in Red Hook. “It would be nice if we can start looking into each one of these headaches that we have here in the neighborhood.”

The city does not conduct air monitoring in Red Hook itself, which has been something Aviles, the Council member, has been pushing for.

The expansion of the cruise terminal — increasing its ability to accommodate more and larger ships — without a shore power system that works for all ships has added to some feelings of frustration and mistrust toward EDC.

Carolina Salguero, executive director of the nonprofit PortSide — which helped to build a playground that EDC evicted in September — said she wants “to see the EDC’s promise of shore power fulfilled plus all the other EDC promises,” as well as “things they haven’t promised but that would make them effective at economic development and not just extractive in their relationship to Red Hook.”

There is only one pier for cruise ships to dock at BCT.  The exact address is 72 Bowne St. Brooklyn

Called MSC and they gave us 210 Clinton Wharf, Brooklyn NY Pier 12 as the address.

Clinton wharf looks like the pier for the NY water taxi/ shuttles, but the ship will be about 50 yards away. This is the address I gave our driver:140 W 24 Street Brooklyn.

MSC really needs to improve their terminal facilities 🤣

Jut kidding… this is close to the port but is definitely an industrial garage in Red Hook, not the terminal address.

Also, W 24th Street in Brooklyn is in Coney Island. Not close to Red Hook or the cruise terminal at all.

I have seen the 210 Clinton Wharf address in several places, including under Embarkation info in the App (click Profile, then My Cruise, then look under Embarkation info.).

When your eTicket becomes available it is on the page that says "Main Steps for Embarkation" .... it was page 16 for me.

That's why the correct address for your drivers is Clinton Wharf. Drop off/pickup is in the "loop" there at the end of Clinton Wharf.

If we didn’t have to transfer ferries, we 100% would be taking the ferry from our neighborhood to Red Hook for our January sailing. Knowing we’d have to do an outdoor wintertime transfer in lower manhattan, with bags, we’ll probably just do an uber/lyft.

We plan on taking the ferry from Wall Street/Pier 11. My wife and I will each have a large checked bag. I don't see anything on the ferry website about bringing bags on the ferry, although I do see language about bringing folding bikes. Any help on whether bringing large bags/suitcases is an issue?

It’s a bit like the subway… there’s no prohibition about bringing big bags on the train, but it’s certainly an acquired skill if you’re not used to it, and you might be an annoyance to the regulars.

That said, ferry use in NY is way lower than the subway, so you’re much more likely to have plenty of space near your seat to tuck your bags away. Wall St - Red Hook isn’t exactly a booming route.

Hi everyone,

I'm new to Cruise Critic and I apologize if I'm not in the right spot for this question.  We are cruising on MSC Meraviglia from this port in January and wondering if there are  any hotels that offer Park and Cruise packages?

I haven't been able to find any. There are some hotels near the airport that offer park & fly and you could always get your own ground transportation from those to the cruise terminal. But it does not appear that there are any hotels in the area that offer included ground transportation to the Brooklyn cruise terminal, only Manhattan or Cape Liberty.

72 Bowne was the original 2006 street address of the Red Hook Pier 12 on Buttermilk Channel on the south side of the Atlantic Basin at Pioneer and Imlay Streets. The main gate for Pier 12 is  Bowne and Imlay Streets hence you get that address. Converted from a 1954 freight terminal and was earlier site of the Atlantic Basin Iron Works.

That's the address I used for all my Princess cruises prior to NYC Ferry arriving.

When they built the Ferry slip, they changed the street name to 210 Clinton Wharf. The gate at Bowne and Imlay Streets is left LOCKED when a cruise ship is calling. If you use Bowne Street as the address some GPS' will bring you to that locked gate. Use 210 Clinton Wharf and you won't go wrong.

Hi! We're also from Canada (Ottawa). There are no park & cruise hotels in Brooklyn, but there are several in NJ. We are staying at the SureStay by Best Western for our December cruise. One night with 8 nights of parking was about $300.

Was that cruising out of the Brooklyn cruise terminal? I couldn't find any with a shuttle to the Brooklyn cruise terminal.

Ah, I missed the shuttle part! No it isn’t. We plan on using the water taxi system. 😀

Yes, I have the Rome2Rio app and it indicates this is possible. Am I being mislead? 😆

Wowza! This new New York-based cruise ship is bigger than the city's biggest hotel

Gene Sloan

What's the biggest hotel in New York City?

If you guessed the famously massive New York Marriott Marquis near Times Square, with its 1,971 rooms, you would have been right ... on Wednesday.

But as of Thursday, there's a new giant in town, albeit one that you won't be able to access every day. It'll be coming and going.

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter

It's the MSC Meraviglia, the first cruise ship from fast-growing MSC Cruises to be based in in the Big Apple. One of the biggest cruise ships in the world, it has a whopping 2,224 rooms — edging out the New York Marriott Marquis' room count by a comfortable margin.

We know MSC Meraviglia is not a "hotel" in the strictest definition. But cruise ships essentially are just hotels that float. When MSC Meraviglia is docked at its new home base in New York City, something that will happen every few days year-round, it'll be hard to argue it's not the biggest lodging establishment in the Five Boroughs.

Eighteen decks high and more than 1,000 feet long, MSC Meraviglia can hold about 5,700 passengers with every berth filled, and it sails with 1,500-plus crew members. That means that, on any given day, it could have more than 7,000 people on board.

The arrival of MSC Meraviglia in New York City marks a significant milestone for MSC Cruises, a Europe-based brand that, until now, has only offered sailings in North America out of the Port of Miami and Port Canaveral . MSC Meraviglia has been based out of Port Canaveral until now.

The arrival comes as the battle for cruisers in the New York area heats up, with rival lines such as Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line deploying some of the newest and biggest ships to the market.

Related: New Norwegian Prima to sail from New York, Texas and Florida

MSC Meraviglia will depart Saturday on its first sailing from New York — a seven-night voyage to Florida and the Bahamas. It'll then run a year-round schedule of six- to 11-night voyages to the Caribbean, Bermuda, New England and Canada.

When it's in New York, the ship will dock at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, which is in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn.

The new MSC Cruises sailings out of New York will include:

  • Seven- and eight-night voyages to the Bahamian port of Nassau and Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, the line's private island in the Bahamas.
  • Six-night trips to Bermuda that feature three days docked at King's Wharf.
  • Ten and 11-night sailings to New England and Canada that bring calls at Boston; Portland, Maine; Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; Halifax and Sydney, Nova Scotia; and Saint John, New Brunswick. The 11-night itinerary also includes a stop at Newport, Rhode Island.

MSC Cruises is joining Royal Caribbean and Norwegian in basing ships in the New York area year-round for sailings to the above regions. Other lines that sail regularly out of New York-area ports on a seasonal basis include Carnival Cruise Line , Disney Cruise Line and Celebrity Cruises . Cunard Line also has a major presence in New York City with regular transatlantic sailings from New York to the United Kingdom.

MSC Cruises has been rapidly building its footprint in North America in an effort to woo more Americans. In 2017, MSC Cruises only had a single vessel based in North America. It now has two vessels based in Miami, one based in Port Canaveral and one based in New York.

All of the North America-based ships are marketed heavily to Americans.

Founded in 1989 in Naples, Italy, and now based in Switzerland, MSC Cruises in recent years has been building big, resort-like vessels that compete with the biggest ships from the likes of Royal Caribbean and Norwegian. It currently operates seven of the 20 biggest cruise ships in the world.

The line is also in the midst of building the largest cruise terminal in North America, at PortMiami. It'll be able to accommodate three of the line's largest ships at once.

Note that MSC Meraviglia isn't the first cruise ship with more rooms than the New York Marriott Marquis to dock in New York City. On days when Norwegian's Norwegian Epic is in town, for instance — something that will happen just once this year — it surpasses the New York Marriott Marquis in size. Norwegian Epic has about 2,100 rooms.

In addition, MSC Meraviglia will be eclipsed in size among cruise ships sailing out of the New York area on May 7 when Royal Caribbean's giant Oasis of the Seas returns to the city for a short-term series of sailings through October. The giant ship, which has more than 2,700 rooms, began sailing seasonally out of New York in 2021 .

Swing ride 160 feet above the water coming to MSC Cruises' new ship in 2025

msc cruise line brooklyn ny

MSC Cruises’ new ship will have a swing set on board – but not the kind you’d find on a playground.

Cliffhanger, a new ride launching on forthcoming U.S. flagship MSC World America next year, will allow guests to swing out over the ocean 160 feet above the water, the cruise line revealed Tuesday. The four-seat ride uses mechanical arms to lift guests beyond the 22-deck ship’s edge, where they are propelled back and forth.

The line is billing the attraction as the only over-water swing ride at sea. MSC Cruises USA President Rubén A. Rodríguez said Cliffhanger is a “natural next step,” following attractions on its other ships like Seascape’s Robotron .

“It’s the first time we’re taking thrill-seekers out past the deck and over the water, and we know they’ll love it,” he told USA TODAY in an email. There will be an added charge for the ride, but pricing details were not yet available.

Cliffhanger will be part of Family Aventura, one of seven districts on the 2,614-stateroom ship. The area also features The Harbor, an outdoor park area with a high ropes course, a playground inspired by the lighthouse at the line’s private Bahamas destination Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve and more.

Other districts on the ship include Galleria, home to dining venues, shopping and games “at the heart of the ship,” and Zen Area, an adults-only zone at the vessel’s stern where guests can enjoy music, catch some sun and take a dip in twin pools, according to an earlier news release .

Short vs. long cruises: Which one is right for you?

World America will debut in April 2025 and spend its inaugural season sailing Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises from Miami.

6 Top Transatlantic Cruises for 2024

T ransatlantic cruises are unique when you compare them to traditional cruises most people book for family trips and romantic getaways. These voyages tend to be longer in general, and they have more built-in days at sea and offer a lot more time on board as a result. Repositioning cruises that include a transatlantic crossing tend to attract more retirees and travelers who just want to relax and enjoy their ships' amenities, especially since fewer days in port means fewer excursions and more time doing nothing at all.

That said, the fact that transatlantic cruises can last as few as seven nights means they may fit in your plans more easily than you may think. There are also some benefits to transatlantic crossings that may not be obvious, including lower nightly rates, more onboard credit, and more time to kick back and relax at a floating luxury resort in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

If you're curious which transatlantic cruises are best for 2024, here are six top picks with different cruise lengths, itineraries and unique destinations to explore.

Explore cruises on GoToSea , a service of U.S. News.

Cunard Line

Date: Departs May 5, 2024

Departure port: Brooklyn, New York

Starting price: $2,449 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 7 to 18 nights

In May of 2024, Cunard's Queen Mary 2 vessel will offer three different transatlantic crossings of various lengths. Choose from a seven-night sailing from Brooklyn, New York , to Southampton, England; a nine-night sailing to Hamburg, Germany ; and an 18-night round-trip sailing that departs from Brooklyn and crosses the Atlantic twice on the way back to its starting point. This unique combination of itineraries lets you cross the sea and tailor your trip to how long you want to be away from home.

The 18-night itinerary is especially interesting, since it lets you depart from the United States and arrive back in Brooklyn in the end with stops in both England and Germany, as well as plenty of sea days in between. Luxury cruise line Cunard is known for its elegant design, lush amenities and upscale feel, and the Queen Mary 2 is one of the line's most luxurious ships. Highlights on this exclusive vessel include the Royal Court Theatre, a casino, gala evenings, an onboard spa and a vast library. The Queen Mary 2 holds up to 2,691 guests with 1,173 crew to cater to your every need.

Seabourn Cruise Line

Date: Departs March 24, 2024

Departure port: Miami

Starting price: $5,949 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 21 nights

Seabourn is offering a 21-night transatlantic cruise from Miami on Seabourn Quest in March 2024 that offers a diverse range of ports of call before ending its voyage in Las Palmas in Spain's Canary Islands . Departure from Miami is followed by nine days at sea. Then, you'll enjoy multiple stops in the Canary Islands – including Santa Cruz de La Palma and San Sebastián de La Gomera – as well as stops in Praia and Mindelo the Cape Verde archipelago.

This journey with Seabourn makes it possible for travelers to see some of the most beautiful and remote tropical islands in the world. The Canary Islands are known for their white sand beaches , volcanoes and lush greenery; similar landscapes can also be found in Cape Verde's coastal towns and villages. Seabourn Quest, a smaller ocean vessel, accommodates just 229 guests.

MSC Cruises

Date: Departs Nov. 8, 2024

Departure port: Southampton, England

Starting price: $769 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 16 nights

The MSC Virtuosa from MSC Cruises is repositioning from Europe to the Caribbean in November 2024, which gives travelers the chance to enjoy a lengthy transatlantic crossing with plenty of unique ports. This sailing departs from England with eight sea days plus stops in France, the Azores of Portugal, St. Maarten , Antigua and Barbuda, and Martinique . The ship ends its journey in Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe.

The MSC Virtuosa is a larger cruise vessel that boasts an impressive grand promenade with a LED dome ceiling, dedicated clubs for children and teens, an onboard spa, a lavish casino and the luxurious MSC Yacht Club section of the ship. This vessel holds a maximum of 6,334 passengers at once.

Raw HTML : Tips on Trips and Expert Picks

Princess Cruises

Date: Departs July 5, 2024

Departure port: New York City (Manhattan or Brooklyn)

Starting price: $4,098 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 31 nights

Princess Cruises also offers its share of transatlantic sailings on various vessels. Its 31-night crossing from New York to Barcelona, Spain , on Island Princess in July 2024 is jam-packed with exciting destinations to explore. This lengthy transatlantic voyage has only 13 sea days with planned stops in Canada's Newfoundland, Greenland, Iceland, Scotland, England, Spain, Portugal and Morocco before the journey ends in Barcelona.

This intriguing sailing experience with Princess takes passengers to eight different countries in the span of a month. Island Princess is a nice ship for a long sailing because of its smaller size, with just 2,200 passengers and 900 crew. But the ship is also large enough to have a huge selection of included and specialty dining options, a Vegas-style casino, a sports court, a large central atrium for gathering, and several pools and hot tubs to enjoy.

Celebrity Cruises

Date: Departs April 11, 2024

Departure port: Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Starting price: $760 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 12 nights

Celebrity Cruises is offering a 12-night sailing on Celebrity Equinox in April 2024 that starts in Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and ends in Lisbon, Portugal – making it possible for travelers to enjoy eight relaxing days at sea. What's interesting about this sailing is its stops along the way, which include the Royal Naval Dockyard in Bermuda; Porta Delgada in Portugal's Azores archipelago; and Porto in mainland Portugal.

The Celebrity Equinox accommodates a maximum of just 2,852 passengers at once, so this Celebrity vessel is a solid choice for travelers who want just the right size ship instead of a smaller vessel or a megaship. There are also plenty of onboard features to keep you happy and entertained as you float across the Atlantic Ocean, including The Casino, The Lawn Club with outdoor games like bocce ball and croquet, The Martini Bar, the adults-only Solarium and more.

Royal Caribbean International

Dates: Departs Oct. 24, 2024

Departure port: Barcelona, Spain

Starting price: $876 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 14 nights

Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas is hosting a transatlantic voyage in October 2024 that departs from Barcelona, Spain, and ends in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This vessel will make stops in Palma de Mallorca, Valencia, Cartagena and Málaga in Spain, then spend eight days at sea. After that, enjoy a day in Nassau in the Bahamas before the cruise drops passengers off in sunny Florida.

Interior staterooms on this Royal Caribbean sailing start at just $876 per person (plus port taxes and fees), which works out to around $60 per night, per person. The Oasis of the Seas megaship can hold a total of 6,771 guests and 2,109 crew, so it's an enormous vessel – to put it mildly. This size may not be ideal for travelers who want a more intimate cruising experience, but it's perfect for cruisers who want plenty of space to spread out and endless activities to take part in. Oasis of the Seas boasts 20 different restaurants and cafes, 11 bars and lounges, a variety of pools and whirlpools, a rock climbing wall, the AquaTheater diving and entertainment venue, mini-golf, a casino and plenty more.

MSC Cruises' Latest Sale Has Voyages Starting at $179 — When to Book

The sale is running until April 18.

msc cruise line brooklyn ny

MSC Cruises is offering monumental savings on sailings to warm weather destinations starting at less than $200 per person.

The sale, which was extended and must be booked by April 18, offers cruises starting at just $179 per person, according to MSC. The sale rate is based on double occupancy and does not include the taxes, fees, or port expenses.

Travelers who take advantage of this deeply-discounted rate can sail on three and four night journeys from Miami for just $179, or from Orlando starting at just $189, MSC shared with Travel + Leisure .

“It’s a great opportunity, whether you’re curious about cruising for the first time or you’re an avid cruiser looking to book your next sailing,” Koreen McNutt, the senior vice president and commercial sales officer for MSC Cruises USA, told T+L. “These quick getaways let guests discover everything we have to offer from world-class onboard entertainment and outstanding family programming to a variety of delicious dining venues and wonderful amenities. Plus, these short cruises all visit our private island in The Bahamas, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, with beautiful white-sand beaches and pristine water brimming with vibrant marine life.”

The sale also includes MSC’s cruises from Galveston , which the company plans to introduce as its newest homeport in the United States in 2025. The cruise line expects to sail 7-night trips to Mexico and Central America on the MSC Seascape out of Galveston, which start at just $459 per person during the sale.

In addition, MSC is offering savings on its newest ship, the MSC World America , which the company plans to launch next year complete with a thrilling over-water swing ride, 13 different restaurants, an 11-deck-high dry slide, and more. Cruises on this ship start at just $649 per person as part of the sale.

“Cruising offers an unbeatable value proposition for vacations and we’re offering more itinerary options from a larger selection of embarkation ports than ever before, which makes it even easier for more people to discover what MSC Cruises is all about,” McNutt added.

Beyond the cruise fare, MSC is offering the option for travelers to add a drink package and Wi-FI to their booking starting at just $329.
