Mount Kenya Safari Club. The 1960s Club For The A-List Is Among The Grand Old Kenyan Addresses Recapturing Past Glories.

Mt Kenya Safari Club. The 1960s Club For The A-List Is Among The Grand Old Kenyan Addresses Recapturing Past Glories.

Mount Kenya Safari Club: Having stayed there myself, it is truly a time capsule; a Tardis to an era of bygone luxury and romantic decadence. Nothing can prepare you for the magic and memories that you will experience when you visit Mount Kenya’s Camelot. From its front gate to its sprawling 100 acres the Safari Lodge Club is an expedition in itself.

The Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club isn’t just a glamorous old-school Hollywood hangout, it’s got a huge heart too. In 1967, once-owner William Holden and some friends set up a conservation reserve and animal orphanage on the property, embarking on an ambitious breeding program to save the critically-endangered mountain bongo. Today, where these large white-striped antelope were once even more sought after among trophy hunters than the Big Five, there are now 64 safe and sound in the reserve. You can meet, feed and even pet some of them amongst a multitude of other exotic creatures being cared for at the orphanage. Think African lynx, porcupine, forest cats, cheetahs, and a couple of llamas over from Peru – not quite an authentic safari but certainly a meaningful Fairmont-funded cause.

Here you can spend your mornings horseback riding across the hills and through the ancient woodlands of Mount Kenya National Park, spotting white zebras en route. You can spend your afternoons fishing for trout in the lake alongside pre-historic looking marabou stork and peacocks. Dog-lovers can even explore the Club’s vast grounds which house an actual maze, some tennis courts and a spa currently undergoing a big facelift, accompanied by two young Labradors – an unusual hotel amenity by anyone’s standards.

mt kenya safari club owner

If you wander into the bar at the Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club these days, you’ll not see Ernest Hemingway telling tall tales from a day’s big-game hunting. Neither will you see Ava Gardner downing gimlets in an attempt to forget her failed marriage to Frank Sinatra; nor will you have to fight pet leopards for a seat. The whole place just drips with memorabilia.

WHWF - History

But in the club’s heyday in the 1960s all these things were commonplace, when Hollywood heartthrob William Holden (Bridge Over The River Kwai, Network) and his partners, oil billionaire Ray Ryan and Swiss financier Carl Hirschmann, ran the place as the most elite private members’ club in the world. Membership was by invitation only and members included Bing Crosby, David Lean, Charlie Chaplin, Steve McQueen, Conrad Hilton, Winston Churchill, and the Maharaja of Jaipur. Stefanie Powers and John Hurt still keep houses adjoining the club.

Holden, who fell in love with Kenya on hunting safaris in the ’50s (he died in LA in 1981), was known for his practical joking in the bar, such as snakes hidden in the bottom of a peanut tin. He was also a very hands-on manager, keeping an eye on the bar and its goings-on via telescope from his private villa.

But there is more to this idyll in northern Kenya, once the private home of jet-set couple the Prudhommes, than just the Hollywood magic dust left behind by years of raucous carousing. It is the sheer beauty of this stretch of land that sits at the base of Africa’s second-highest mountain.

Mount Kenya Safari Club review: Hollywood in the wilds

“Bill Holden said, when he saw the place: ‘This is the most beautiful place in the world’,” recalls expatriate American Don Hunt, Holden’s close friend and chairman of the Mount Kenya Game Ranch, a conservation project set up next door to the club. “I agree and I think that every time I drive into my front gate.”

The club’s beauty includes sweeping highland forest that leads into dense thickets of bamboo, while rich clusters of birdlife and herds of waterbuck roam nearby.

The new owners have transformed the one-time Hollywood haunt since it took over the property four years ago. The 200-kilometre journey from Nairobi is nowhere near as challenging as it used to be when Ray Ryan built an airstrip so A-list guests could avoid the trek. However it’s still a long haul, past makeshift shops, roadside towns, and hectares of the country’s famed coffee plantations.

There is still little to give away the beauty that awaits when we turn right past an electricity substation on a dust-choked road from the nearest township, Nanyuki, with only a family of warthogs trotting alongside us for company. A few minutes later, however, at the imposing iron gates embroidered with the Mount Kenya Safari Club logo of two elephant heads, we can see what captivated Holden and Hunt.

Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club - An Equatorial Paradise! - Trippy Passports

Manicured lawns sweep down to a pool, past flower-filled ponds and then on to the slopes, where they climb for kilometres to the snow-dusted peak, known locally as Kirinyaga.

The club is built directly on the equator its line cutting straight through the main bar, following the curve of the national park before running straight along the seventh hole of the club’s petite nine-hole golf course.

William Holden with friends and a snake at the Mount Kenya Safari Club

Having been greeted in the northern hemisphere by the hotel’s general manager, Philippe Cauviere a gregarious Frenchman with “hospitality in his blood” we’re shown to our rooms on the southern side of the equator.

The club’s 120 rooms are imposing and royally decorated, many with gargantuan fireplaces lit each evening to stave off the crisp mountain cold.

Cauviere’s stated aim is “to bring back the passion and the glamour to the club as well as the tradition”. And he is sparing no detail in his quest. “My dream is to bring back the white peacocks that used to roam the grounds,” he says later over coffee. “As well as the zebras and even the cheetahs.”

He also aims to restore the spirit of the club not only as a destination but also as a place that supports its staff. He believes the Kenyan people have a “natural hospitality”. We see this day in, day out; not only at the resort but on our entire trip.

Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club - 5 star Hotel in Nanyuki | ALL - ALL

Still, for me, the Mount Kenya Safari Club even has a unique luxe take on wildlife spotting. On our first day at the club, a surprise call from the front desk suggested we take the following morning’s breakfast at the base of the mountain. Three choices of transport were provided: car, foot, and horse. And damn it, if the spirit of the place didn’t get the better of me and we found ourselves bouncing around on the back of amiable horses, striding across the grounds where William Holden used to career around on his motorbike with his two pet gibbons, Rudi, and Margot, clinging to the bike for dear life.

Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club - 5 star Hotel in Nanyuki | ALL - ALL

After reaching the airstrip we trotted to our table, a lavish affair set with silverware. There we sat, dwarfed by the mountain, as armed rangers watched over us and club staff Peter and Joyce whipped up a multi-course extravaganza of bircher muesli, smoked salmon, scrambled eggs, and sweet, plump, locally grown pineapples, topped off with a Kenyan coffee.

On the return journey, as we rode past Holden’s villa, I was sure that if he were watching through his telescope now, he would be pleased with how his pet project had turned out.

How Italian Mafia became a part of Mt Kenya Safari Club history

Mt Kenya Safari Club

The Mt Kenya Safari Club’s history is a sharp contrast with the prestigious facility set up in the foothills of Mount Kenya in Nanyuki, Laikipia County. Mount Kenya Safari Club Owner

The club is over five decades old and it never lost its allure after being set up. But with it are tales of mafia and sinful practices that went down the hotel.

However, before all this happened, there is a wonderful story of Mt Kenya Safari Club’s history. Here is more.

Who Started Mount Kenya Safari Club?

Hollywood sensation William Holden together with oil billionaire Ray Ryan and Swiss banker Carl Hirschmann founded the club. They made it the world’s most exclusive private members club.

The likes of Winston Churchill, Conrad Hilton, Charlie Chaplin, Bing Crosby, and Steve were all members. But how the celebrated trio started this club in the 1960s remains a fairy tale.

Holden, Ryan, and Hirshchmann arrived in Kenya during the colonial era and traveled up north for hunting escapades. It was a fantastic destination for intrepid travelers – soldiers much so – and despite the colonial war then, they were ready to stay in Kenya.

There were soldiers of fortune, intrepid explorers, hunters, and settlers in Kenya around the turn of the 20th century. Nanyuki, a charming village nestled in the foothills of Mount Kenya, with a wide main street was the place that intrigued the trio founders.

It was a hive of activity, with a burgeoning populace engaged in all manner of business and trade. William and his party already a favorite place to stay in Nanyuki, Kenya.

The town in the scenic Laikipia County has forests and gardens to the north and south of it. It sits on the equator on a mountain slope . Just a few kilometers outside Nanyuki, there was this vast coffee farm that would later become part of Mt Kenya Safari Club history.

Holden and his partners got a good deal when the owner of the coffee farm sold it due to crop failure in 1960. The three acquired it and renamed it the Mount Kenya Safari Club.

The transformed the coffee firm into a revered establishment in the world. Mt Kenya Safari Club history has it that the hotel started as an inn then a stunning East African hotel.

Due to Mount Kenya Safari Club’s unusual location, it became a haven for renowned visitors. Hollywood stars, celebrities, royalties, and heads of state visited the club.

The colonial architecture of this historic club offers a glimpse of Kenya’s past.

Hitherto, there are twelve identical cottage suites, each named after Holden, the club’s founder. They represent the charm and history of the building’s original dwelling. They have large living areas with lovely stone fireplaces, private lawns with views of the mountain, and five-piece ensuite bathrooms.

They’re classy, too with luxurious apartments for two couples or a family featuring adjoining bedrooms for privacy and comfort.

How Did Mt Kenya Safari Club Become a Mafia Hideout?

During the 1960s and 1970s, Ryan carved the Mt Kenya Safari Club history. He allowed the Italian Mafia, or “Mob,” to use the high-class safari lodge as a refuge for their African operations.

Catena, Tommy Eboli, Pasquale Eboli, and Gerardo “Jerry” Catena are among the alleged members of the Genovese crime syndicate. They had membership in the Order of St. Michael and St. George. Sleaze, sex, and vice were all part of Ryan’s daily routine.

The Chicago Outfit, a gambling death squad originally commanded by famed Chicago criminal leader Al Capone, was the link to the Italian mafia in the 1920s until he was imprisoned at the age of 33.

Al Capone, one of America’s most infamous gangsters of the 20th century, was freed from prison early due to a combination of syphilis and gonorrhea that had ruined his brain.

Because of his reputation, Johns Hopkins University Hospital allegedly refused to put him in the new penicillin medicine trials.

However, the Chicago Outfit continued to operate even after Al Capone’s death, and Ryan was well-connected throughout its ranks. Among them was Marshall Caifano, a prominent member of the Chicago Outfit whose notoriety and extortion allegedly compensated for his diminutive physique.

As a member of the Mt Kenya Safari Club, these gangsters had access to all of the club’s facilities . A court in California requested records from Kenya-registered Ryan Investments Ltd and Mawingu Limited in 1969 in order to investigate the club’s Mafia ties.

It found Ryan guilty of changing corporate papers to conceal evidence that he provided members of the Mafia free membership at the club in July 1970.

Who is the Mount Kenya Safari Club Owner?

Humphrey Kariuki, a Kenyan billionaire, now owns the Mt Kenya Safari Club. Kariuki has a vast interest in Kenya’s hospitality industry and owns several high-end hotels spread throughout Kenya.

Loved the stay: great facilities, room, and service was superb.

We loved our stay and it exceeded our expectations in many ways. The service was superb and made it very special. I would recommend giving guests free access to sauna and steam facilities as this is the norm and we were a little disappointed in it being chargeable and then time bound to only 30 mins. We understand other services to be charged, but it's not normally the case for sauna a stream rooms. Thanks for everything! C.

Disappointing

Disappointing stay at a hotel we have frequented several times and usually have a great experience. Being given no option than to book on full board, then the hotel realizing they can’t accommodate all guests in the restaurant and making a cheap make-shift tent outside is really not what you expect from a Fairmont.

Ami Doshi Shah revisits the interesting history of one of Kenya’s oldest hotels, Mount Kenya Safari Club, once an exclusive playground for Hollywood’s rich.

In 1959, Hollywood actor,William Holden, infamous oil and property tycoon, Ray Ryan, and Swiss financier, Carl Hirschmann were visiting Mawingu Hotel, precursor of the Mount Kenya Safari Club. A modest but beautiful 100 acre hunting lodge, Mawingo sat at the foothills of Mt Kenya nestled in an intermittent haze of cloud. One fine day, the three went out on a hunting trip, perhaps hoping to catch an innocent impala, lion or majestic ‘tusker’ if they were lucky.

On that day, it seemed that luck was on the side of the four-legged creatures and Ryan suffered a cut in the eye from the recoil of his rifle. In solidarity, the three influential men decided to nurture their growing ‘bromance’ by staying at Mawingu while Ryan recuperated. In time, their love for this place grew and they subsequently approached Mawingu’s owner. The three made offer to hotelier Abraham ‘Tubby’ Block of Block Hotels, bought Mawingu and renamed it Mount Kenya Safari Club.

A Hollywood haven

Holden spent a considerable amount of time at the Safari Club between filming Paris. Movies such as Sizzles (1964) with Audrey Hepburn, The Wild Bunch (1969), The Network (1976) and handful of other Hollywood blockbusters. Over these years, Holden and his partners cultivated an incredible network of potential ‘members’ for the Club. The likes of Winston Churchill, Bing Crosby, John Travolta, the Aga Khan and Charlie Chaplin were guests. It was said that Holden would continue to ‘monitor’ activities at the bar using his trusty telescope from the comfort of his cottage.

The Club continues

In 1981, Holden died. Not in a hunting accident, but rather tripping and knocking his head on the side of a table, while heavily intoxicated. Some would call it a strangely unglamorous way for such a charismatic and extravagant individual to pass away. The Mount Kenya Safari Club nevertheless persevered. After changing ownership a couple more times, it was bought by the Fairmont Group of hotels. Extensive, multimillion dollar renovations have breathed new life into the time-riddled property.

While it still maintains an air of luxury, the sense of cliquish exclusivity has gone. The Cape Dutch architecture is preserved as are historical mementos captured in sepia tones and nearing a century.

The rooms are a palette of beige and dark wood interiors plus a warm fire and plush bath robes. Magnificent morning views of Kirinyaga (Kikuyu for Mt Kenya) are common, when the clouds have cleared from its ominous peaks.

Animal Orphanage

The Animal Orphanage within the estate is one of William Holden’s lasting legacies of conservation. Here you’ll find endangered, doe-eyed and caramel coated bongo antelopes. Raucous primates from Colobus to Sykes monkeys literally eat out of your hands. It is an incredible chance to experience a pocket of the animal beauty that charmed Holden in the 100-acre wilderness.

After the end of colonialism, Daniel Arap Moi, Kenya’s second president, was one of the first locals to gain membership. Previously the Club was predominantly a rich white man’s playground. Now, the chance to experience the history, natural beauty and luxury is not dictated by race or power. A willingness to travel, explore and perhaps a little bit of coin are the main criteria. This is an interesting mark of our country’s own post-colonial evolution. It’s also settling to know that someone with a telescope won’t be watching how many drinks you’re downing.

Activities include: horseback riding, golfing, nature trails and fishing

Guests can dine at their Colobus Grill Restaurant or Tusks Restaurant, or alternatively, they can opt for specialised dining.

The Colobus Grill Restaurant is an open grilled kitchen restaurant with live stations where guests get to watch chefs as they prepare meals.

Hotel Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club is owned by billionaire businessman, Humphrey Kariuki.

He kicked off his career at the Central Bank of Kenya as clerk when he was nineteen.

He soon discovered that employment and being submissive to his superiors was not his cup of tea and went into entrepreneurship.

He started importing and traded vehicles, a business that opened up his eyes to the immense possibility that lied in business.

After accumulating a considerable bank balance and accompanied with his experience from traveling around the world, he went into the hospitality industry.

He developed Green Corner Restaurant in Nairobi’s Central Business District which soon became the option of choice for most professionals in the city.

Kariuki also entered into the alcoholic beverages business by forging partnerships with liquor producers in Europe and North America to ship in and sell their products.

He then moved to the oil sector and started off at the National Oil Company of Kenya (NOCK) where his work was to distribute the products within Kenyan borders.

He later founded the Dalbit Petroleum company that distributes oil across Southern and East Africa and the Great Lakes Africa Energy company.

Kariuki later purchased the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy and Animal Orphanage in his efforts to continue with its predecessors’ legacy of preserving endangered wildlife.

In 2007, Fairmont was acquired by Fairmont Hotels and Resorts group, which operates it to this day on behalf of Kariuki.

Breakfast was great, location is beautiful and serene

mt kenya safari club owner

This hotel was a superb start to our honeymoon I'm Kenya. Everything about it from the welcome to the room to the food to the safari was perfect. We were with our 9 month old so everyone was very accommodating & we found it a comfortable stay for all of us. Bonus for our room was the fireplace & having it lit every night & hot water bottles in our room. The hotel is beautiful with gorgeous grounds & they're very organised for the game drives. Many thanks to Samson who we communicated with. & there's an animal orphanage on site. Kamata our driver was fantastic & we really enjoyed the game drive who did his best for us to see lions & giraffes! We did a closer & half day game drive as more suitable for baby. All the staff in the restaurant were great, special mention, Angelique. Definitely visit again if we go back to that part of Kenya again.

mt kenya safari club owner

Everything. It is situated at a most lovely location, with Mount Kenya in the background. The service was excellent.

mt kenya safari club owner

Quite, peaceful ,tranquil environment with great views of Mt Kenya. Excellent breakfast experience, lunch and dinner fabulous . Large open spaces ,large pool .

mt kenya safari club owner

Amazing setting and grounds , fantastic rooms, and great service, going out of their way to accommodate our needs

mt kenya safari club owner

Grounds are magnificent with plenty of activities at the hotel and close proximity to amazing safaris. Rolling hills with the stunning Mount Kenya in the background combined with roaming wildlife and activities make the hotel worth staying at for at least part of the trip rather than spending all day at safaris.

mt kenya safari club owner

Its heavenly, i love everything about it, from the experience, the ataff, the atmosphere, the cleanliness, the response time , the comfort, the food and much more.

the location was outstanding and perfect. The view of Mt kenya and few animals coming till the lobby and kids enjoying it was fabulous
