Confession: I’m a big fan of travel agents (whoops, sorry, travel advisers ), even though I could technically book all my trips through websites and apps. And despite the fact that many of us might consider this industry old-fashioned and out-of-date, research shows that travelers, and millennials in particular, are once again turning to these specialists to help plow through TripAdvisor detritus. If you’re wondering: how much does a travel agent cost, and why would I book with one anyway? Read on.

How to Know If You Need a Travel Agent

Once you’ve come around to the idea of hiring a travel agent, ask these three questions before booking:

  • Is this a domestic trip or one that involves traveling to a part of the world you’ve never been? If it’s the former you don’t need a travel agent.
  • Can I get a better deal by using a travel agent? (This question requires you pricing out your trip with and without one.)
  • Is this a big-budget, special-event kind of trip? If the answer is yes, go with a travel agent.

The Pros of Using a Travel Agent

They can find crazy deals..

This is literally their job. If they have been in the travel business for many years, they likely have supplier relationships in place that can help leverage better deals for you. Many travel agents specialize in locations (i.e., cruise vacations in Europe). Some travel agents offer package deals, with more savings passed on to you then booking the trip on your own—that is good news to your wallet.

They will be your advocate.

One of the best ways to utilize a travel agent is as an advocate should something derail on your trip. They can help you with lost luggage, in the case of natural disasters, if you get stuck in a location before your trip, etc. They are there to help you get your trip back on track.

They’ll take care of the little things.

I love my travel agent, and I love all the extras she provides when we use her services for a trip. For instance, when we traveled to the Bahamas, she made sure there was a nice bottle of champagne and strawberries in our room on our arrival, and she also upgraded our room free of charge. While this certainly is not a guarantee when you use a travel agent, there are a lot of added-value extras you can expect when you use a travel agent. Why? Because travel agents know you don’t have to use them to book your trip, and they want to say thank you.

They’re true experts.

Most travel agents have been working in the industry for years now, and it’s their job to stay on top of travel trends and upcoming hot destinations. When I spoke with my travel agent about a trip to Europe recently, she offered a few alternate destinations. Most travel agents cannot score discounted flights, and many travel agents will not even bother. Follow these tips on how to find the cheapest flights possible , instead.

They’re not you.

This may seem obvious, although it’s still important to consider. A travel agent not only finds you the best deals, but they also offer suggestions for activities, restaurants, and more. This is great if you’re someone who doesn’t like to research these things, but you run the risk of working with someone who doesn’t get your personal preferences (maybe they lean toward road tours rather than technical singletrack). Do your own research first, and come up with a list of activities that you want to do. Once you have that list, pass it along to your travel agent to see if they can rustle up any deals as they book.

How to Find a Great One

One of the best ways to find a reputable travel agent is to get referrals from your friends and family. Anyone that has used that travel agent for a previous trip and enjoyed their service is someone worth checking out. As with anything, I always suggest talking to at least two different travel agents to see who you feel most comfortable with. Remember, they are there to work for you.

Know your travel budget before you reach out to a travel agent. Likely, this will be the first question they ask you and will help steer them toward the best destinations for that budget. If you are traveling somewhere that’s specialized, like going on that once-in-a-lifetime African safari , find a specialist that knows that region inside and out. They will usually have the best deals and relationships with hotels and activity companies in that area.

How Much Does a Travel Agent Cost?

Usually, the cost of hiring a travel agent to organize a trip for you is fairly minimal. Many agencies charge a flat fee of around $100, and others may charge a certain small percentage of your trip. Most of their take-home profits come from the hotels, wholesalers, resorts, and businesses they work with, but be sure to as your travel agent about fees upfront and before you start working with them to plan your next dream vacation. First, what exactly is a travel agency?

As more people travel, suppliers (such a hotels and cruises) are more likely to offer perks that travel agencies and advisors can offer their clients. 1. Understand the travel industry, conduct market research & identify a niche

Before you ever touch a business plan, it is important that you learn the ins and outs of the travel industry. This means understanding the triangular relationship between suppliers — such as hotel brands and rental-car services — travel advisors and clients. It’s then critical to know the exact products and services you’ll be selling. This includes hotel reservations, tours, cruises… you get the idea. 

Next, it’s important that you know your competition, and this will rise and fall depending on the audience you’re seeking. For example, it’s generally easier to get your foot in the door at the local level than to start on an international field, where all the major players have already found their market share. 

On the flip side, while there may be less competition the smaller you scale, there may also be exponentially less demand for your agency’s services. Ultimately, it's all a balancing act.

To do all of this, you’ll need to enroll in travel supplier training courses, conduct market research and perhaps ideally, find a niche to exploit.

2. Create a business plan, register your business, make a financial plan & secure startup costs

After you get a handle on the industry, you have to understand the more technical aspects of starting a travel agency. 

This includes creating a business plan, registering your business with all local, state and federal entities (requirements varies by country), pitching a financial plan to investors and securing your startup costs, which could be anywhere from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands of dollars and beyond — the exact number relies on many more factors than can reasonably be listed here. But generally, the larger your target market, the larger the initial investment needs to be. 

This isn’t a one-time ordeal either, as you’ll need to secure investments to fund regular business operations until you start turning a profit.

3. Understand your tax obligations

Another technical aspect of starting a travel agency, or any business, is understanding your tax obligations. 4. Acquire all the necessary licenses & registrations for your travel agency (local, state, international…)

In addition to ordinary business licenses (i.e., the licenses you need to run any business), you may also need to register as a seller of travel. Exact license requirements change with your location — and the specifics get convoluted fast. Moreover, you may also need licenses in select areas before you can sell travel within their borders (e.g. California).

5. Create a website & set up your office (online and / or brick-and-mortar)

On the famous Arbat street, time-worn, wooden storehouses and century-old churches are squashed up against grey, soviet blocks which are then towered over by 21st century office-blocks. Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Worst travel agent ever, originally did a group booking for a wedding in DR just so it will be easier for the people that are not good with technology and also not having a million ppl asking us questions, but it quickly became the worst thing that can happen to us. the price was a $1000 more per person, ask her about it she said they don't price match, lucky we had insurance on the trip so we had to cancel our reservations lost $300 but still saved $700, thinking everything is all set and done but now get a call from Lynn saying that we didn't meet the requirements of 5 rooms because some of our guest did not get insurance so they can not cancel and if we don't meet it the price was going to go up 250 person which was never told to us, and also she is saying that if we book 10 rooms we get a free room, which was never told to us because if we had known that then we wouldn't had canceled our reservations because we actually have a total of 17 rooms book and with the free room our cost would had been cheaper than what we booked online. Every time I talk to her it's a different story stay far away from this place never even once showed us anything in writing. Also reach out to the company she used which is jet fun they told me that once a reservation is book they send a email to Agent to send to us where it says there is a 5 room requirement which we did not receive. Stay away from this place and if you decide to do business with make sure you ask for everything in writing.

If you're thinking of starting a travel agency from home, you're in luck. The cost to become a travel agent is relatively low and there are plenty of opportunities for someone with the passion to sell travel. Not only that, but starting a travel agency from home is becoming the most popular route to become a travel agent .

Want to throw your hat into the ring and start your own travel agency? We'll walk you through the steps you need to take to start a travel agency from home. Starting any business is no walk in a park, but it certainly helps if you have someone to advise you and lay out a path. We're here to help support you and answer your questions as you start out on your new entrepreneurial journey!

One quick note: If you use a host agency , it will make the process of starting a travel agency waaaaay easier (especially if you're a total newbie!). Roughly 95% of new advisors coming into the industry go through a host agency.

10 Steps to Starting Your Travel Agency From Home

  • Find your travel agency niche: Finding a travel agency niche is a great way to hone in on what about travel you're most passionate about. If you develop a niche, you'll be building your travel agency business on a strong foundation of your strengths, interests, and personal networks. Not only that, it will help you give direction as you start (and grow) your agency!
  • Choose your travel agency name: This is often a step advisors struggle with, but don't skip it! Travel vendors need a travel agency name for their records. Make sure you have one ready so you can start selling travel.
  • Choose a Travel Agency Business Structure: Most new-to-industry advisors will be choosing between a sole proprietorship or a Limited Liability Corporation (LLC). It's a matter of balancing host requirements (if you go with one), business protections, your agency model, and your budget.
  • Create a Travel Agency Business Plan: A travel agency business plan is a document that will help you cat herd all your amazing ideas for your business. It helps you define your mission and goals, helping you think through the process on how to get there. Best yet? We have a free 15-page travel agency business plan template you can use!
  • Register Your Travel Agency with the State + Feds : This is a critical step so to legitimize your travel agency. You can register your LLC through the Small Business Administration (SBA) resource to find the steps to get registered with your specific state. Here are the steps to take to start your travel agency from home:

1. Find a Travel Agency Niche

A niche is your friend. When you start your home-based travel agency, a niche will help you establish your brand, create your travel agency name, and allow you to focus your energies. Starting a travel agency without a niche is like traveling without a compass (or, let's be honest, a smartphone). Are you going to be focusing on a destination? Maybe you'll be like Andres Zuleta, who specializes in Japan tours:

Whatever your niche, it's the first problem to solve when you're starting your travel agency! We have a free brainstorming exercise to help you find niches that you're passionate about.

2. Choose Your Travel Agency's Name

Vendors will need a travel agency name for their records so have one ready before you start selling travel.

Whether you go with a host agency or choose to go independent, you're going to need a name for our agency. The vendors (hotels, cruise lines, airlines, etc) will need a travel agency name for their records so have one ready before you can start selling travel. Having a niche already picked out can help you as you decide on your travel agency's name .

Starting your travel agency (from home or otherwise) is a lot of work. The last thing you want as your travel agency opens its doors is a letter saying you've infringed on someone else's trademark! We help you through the things you need to consider when choosing a name for your agency. Are their any competitor's with similar names that will make it harder for you to pull up at the top of the search engines? Are the URLs available? Are their any copyrights? Is it too long to neatly fit on marketing materials? We go through this and a whole lot more, so dig in!

3. Choose a Travel Agency Business Structure

You can change your business structure as your needs evolve.

A base step in starting your travel agency from home is deciding on a business structure. There's a lot that goes into what is the best fit for you. Do you have personal assets like a house or car that you want to make sure are protected? How much money do you want to spend?

We help you understand the different business structure options for your new travel agency : Sole proprietor, partnership, LLC, S Corp.

As you're starting your travel agency, you may feel like the low cost of a sole proprietor makes the most sense for you. It's important to know that you can change your business structure as your needs evolve.

As your business grows and you're making more bookings (which exposes you to more liability), you can always move to a structure that gives you more personal liability protection, like the LLC. While it's more expensive, and may not be feasible for everyone as they're starting their travel agency, the protection it offers to your personal assets is incredibly important as your business grows.

And what the heck is an S Corp anyhow? Don't worry, we'll give you the scoop and let you know when that should be a consideration for you.

4. Create Your Travel Agency Business Plan

Next step in starting your travel agency? A business plan!

While a travel agency business plan isn't technically required to start an agency, it is something I highly recommend. I didn't write a business plan when I started this site but I also knew online marketing, SEO, and the travel industry front and back. I also had the industry connections to make it work. Most people starting a travel agency from home either don't have experience in starting a company or they don't have experience in travel. This is where a business plan can help.

What a business plan does for you is it forces you to think through each different area of your business and come up with a plan. Will you stick to that plan 100%? Definitely not. But it gives you something to refer back to and helps you organize your thoughts. Plan to take a chunk of time to work on it as it's not something you want to do willy-nilly.

Not only that, but we made it really easy with our free 15-page travel agency business plan ! All you need to do is download our template and adapt it to your agency.

That's helpful because you can use some of the data and ideas in there on your travel agency's business plan.

That was good stuff, right? So let’s get started on the business plan for your travel agency. We’ll start by having you download the travel agency business plan template (an editable version of the one you just looked at above).

5. Register Your Travel Agency with the State ... and Feds!

You're doing great! Starting a travel agency from home isn't as tough as you thought, is it? When you have a road map, it's easier much easier to navigate the start-up process.

Registering with the State

Ok, now that you've nailed down your niche, come up with your name, and settled on a business structure. The next step is letting the state government know you've got a company. The Small Business Administration (SBA) website shows   how to register your company's name by state . If you are an LLC, the SBA also has a state-by-state guide on how to register your LLC .

A word of warning: When doing a DBS, your businesses, even though they have different names are still legally considered the same entity.

Registering your company with the state is an important step because you will need this proof to open a business bank account and other random things (running FB business ads, getting a loan) as your business grows. Do yourself a favor and when those certificates come in, keep them handy in a file for your company's legal documents.

When you start your travel agency, you may have registered it as Margarita Travel. But over time, that might change. Let's say you fell into becoming the local destination wedding expert that everyone turned to. Margarita Travel works, but you want to have a more romantic name for those clients and different branding. So you create a new brand, Beach Romance, that specializes in destination weddings. Do you need to let the state know about this new company, even though it's really your same company? Yuppers.

You'll need to file a DBA with the state. DBA is an acronym for "Doing Business As." It's also sometimes referred to as a fictitious name, trade name, or assumed name. Your DBA is essentially saying, 'My formal company is Margarita Travel, but I also go by Beach Romance.'

To help you get a feel for the pros/cons of a dual-brand, listen to Andrey Zakahrenko's story of how his agency evolved into two brands: (This was our first ever podcast so please forgive the horrible sound quality!)

The one thing to know about DBAs is that they don't create a separate entity, it allows you to legally operate under different names. A word of warning: When doing a DBA, your businesses, even though they have different names are still legally considered the same entity. That means if someone sues Beach Romance for a honeymoon gone wrong, Margarita Travel is also being sued since it's the same company.

Registering with the Financial Crimes enforcement network

And can we talk about the Feds for a moment? They're doing their part to cut down on money laundering. (Score!) And... since money laundering happens through businesses, you're going to have to do a little paperwork with them. (Boo!)

You'll fill out the Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) form to make sure you're on the up and up. :) Don't worry, it's not too painful despite the fact the they name of the entity you're sounds like they're going to send a SWAT team into your home at any moment.

6. Get an FEIN (Optional, but Recommended)

A Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) is like a social security number for your company. It's a number to identify your business. Technically, you do not need an FEIN if you're a sole proprietor or a single-member LLC with no employees since you can use your social security number to file taxes.

However, I personally prefer not to give out my social security number if I don't have to. I also like to get my pencils lined up from the get-go. It's free to get an FEIN , takes just a few minutes and, if you move to a business structure that requires an FEIN, you won't have to worry about changing out your SS# for an FEIN on legal documents or other places that require a business identification number.

In general, I would recommend getting an EIN when starting a travel agency. Also, make sure to check in with your tax professional when it's tax filing time—for certain business structures, you may still file under your SS# even though you have an FEIN. Confusing, I know. That's why you go to the professionals! 😊

7. Set Up Your Travel Agency Financials  

Like the FEIN, when starting a travel agency, you don't need a separate business bank account or credit card if you're a sole proprietor, but you'll have wished you'd had set one up come tax time! Here's the reason it can take a while to start seeing the cash flow (especially when you're starting a travel agency from home):

  • It takes a while to build a client base and develop your brand
  • Even when you do make your first bookings, you're not paid commission until after your client completes their travel (or after final payment for some vendors). So, if you make seven bookings in January but the clients aren't traveling until November, you can see how your first-year money might be tight.
  • Travel is something most people only do 1-2 times a year. Even with referrals and repeat clients, it can take a lot longer to build a steady business compared to a new restaurant or other service industries.

Expect Turbulence Ahead as State AGs and DOT Join Forces to Investigate Airlines and Travel Agencies

Last week, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) announced an Airline Passenger Protection Partnership with state AGs (Partnership), which is the latest example of how AGs continue to expand their regulatory reach through collaboration with their federal counterparts. The announcement comes in response to growing frustration among certain AGs regarding their inability to investigate passenger complaints and enforce state consumer protection laws against airlines after efforts to urge Congress to pass legislation that would vest AGs with enforcement authority over airlines had limited success. With the Partnership’s announcement, the participating AGs will not only be empowered to investigate complaints they receive against airlines but also will have access to complaints filed directly by consumers with DOT against airlines and travel agencies. Airlines and other sellers of air transportation should brace themselves for an influx of consumer complaints and proceed with caution in responding to those complaints.

AGs Have New Authority To Investigate Complaints Against Airlines

Federal preemption has generally protected the airline industry from AG regulatory scrutiny. Such preemption prevents state and local governments, as well as private parties, from bringing claims under state consumer protection statutes or other state laws "related to a price, route, or service of an air carrier." 1 This prohibition, in turn, has historically been interpreted as a limitation on the AGs’ ability to investigate consumer complaints against airlines (but not travel agencies). As of this writing, 18 AGs have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with DOT, with seven additional AGs expressing similar interest in joining the MOU. Significantly, the MOU not only encourages AGs to investigate consumer complaints about airlines and travel agencies, but it also effectively deputizes the AGs to make a preliminary determination as to whether the complaints indicate a potential violation of federal aviation consumer protection laws enforced by DOT. If such a preliminary AG determination is made and forwarded to DOT, or if the airline or travel agency is not responsive to the AG’s inquiries, DOT will prioritize its review. Where that DOT review indicates an apparent violation, DOT will issue a letter of inquiry to the airline or travel agency, provided the AG referral includes more than five similar consumer complaints or DOT determines it is in the public interest to do so. DOT will include AG staff on the letter of inquiry, and if DOT determines a violation has occurred, consult with AG staff before determining what steps to take next.

DOT has also agreed to grant the AGs access to DOT’s new complaint database, thereby assisting the AGs in their assessment of whether a violation has occurred and providing the AGs with additional insight into national complaint trends. If the past is prologue, those airlines and travel agencies with the greatest complaint volume will be most at risk for multistate investigations and coordinated enforcement activity. Under federal law, most airlines are already required to respond to written consumer complaints in a timely manner.

Nevertheless, every airline or travel agency regulated by DOT ( e.g. , U.S. airlines, foreign airlines that provide flights to or from the United States, and travel agencies that market flights to, from, or within the United States to U.S. consumers) should expect an increase in investigation letters from AGs that have entered into the MOU with DOT. Pennsylvania AG Michelle Henry’s press release lauding the Partnership contemplates a spike in complaint volume: "At a time when passenger concerns about air travel are climbing and just as we are about to enter the busy summer travel season, airlines must be attentive to consumer comfort and inform the Department of Transportation about major issues." Connecticut AG William Tong called the MOU " a powerful breakthrough " that "explicitly authorizes attorneys general to participate in the enforcement of federal airline consumer protection laws." The AGs are, in all likelihood, actively informing their constituents about this recently announced Partnership and inviting consumers to file complaints with their offices. DOT-regulated entities must be prepared to respond—not only in form but also in substance.

How Can Airlines and Travel Agencies Prepare?

Complaints are the canary in the coal mine of regulatory enforcement. Timely resolutions will undoubtedly help mitigate regulatory scrutiny, as explained in our Expert Analysis for Law360: " How Consumer Complaints Can Help Companies " (subscription required). We find that businesses that have systems in place to efficiently track the resolution of complaints are best equipped to handle AG inquiries. Airlines and travel agencies should ensure that there is an efficient and clear workflow to evaluate, escalate, and respond to complaints, as well as periodically update and audit compliance with their policies and procedures. It is important that such entities also understand How State AGs Process and Prioritize Consumer Complaints to appreciate the differences in how AGs evaluate and escalate complaints. In addition to evaluating their own complaint trends, businesses should also stay current on consumer complaint trends as reported by DOT.

Customer relations teams should pay heed to the warnings above and ensure they are appropriately resourced to handle the expected influx of complaints. In addition to understanding and addressing the top causes of consumer complaints, businesses should closely follow DOT’s rulemaking activities, including two recently-released final rules addressing:

  • refunds for flight irregularities, significantly delayed bags, and ancillary services when not provided, as well as travel credits for certain consumers affected by a serious communicable disease; and
  • enhanced transparency of airline ancillary service fees displayed in response to online flight searches. These final rules are in addition to ongoing DOT initiatives to eliminate so-called family seating fees and to specify amenities that must be provided by airlines during flight irregularities within their control.

The expansion of state AG collaboration with federal co-enforcers is not new. As we have previously reported , AGs frequently partner with the FTC, CFPB, and DOJ, leveraging the force-magnifying effect of co-enforcement power to investigate and bring enforcement actions against businesses for a variety of consumer protection, antitrust , and data privacy violations. With AGs now having their hands on DOT’s regulatory steering wheel, airlines and travel agencies should expect increased regulatory scrutiny as AGs and DOT join forces on consumer protection issues in the aviation sector.

American Airlines has multiple travel advisors up in arms after it announced plans to restrict AAdvantage Miles earnings for certain booking agencies.

The airline behemoth  announced  in February that flyers hoping to earn AAdvantage miles for their flights will have to do so directly through American, their airline partners, or preferred travel agencies recognized by the company.

The change will take effect on May 1, but American has yet to reveal which agencies will be included in its “preferred agencies.”

The change comes as part of the airline’s effort to minimize costs for agencies using older technology booking systems.

The airline has tried to convince agencies using the older booking systems to upgrade to newer platforms like the one American uses on its website.

While American  announced  a list would be shared in “late April,” agencies unsure if they’ll make the cut are expressing their distaste for the major change.

The American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA), Association of Canadian Travel Agencies and Advisors (ACTA), Foro Latinoamericano de Turismo (FOLATUR), and World Travel Agents Associations Alliance (WTAA) emphasized that any plans to restrict their clients’ earning miles could be detrimental to their agencies.

“It’s clear from the consensus among WTAAA, ACTA and FOLATUR, representing travel professionals around the world, the detriment that American’s decision will have on the travel industry globally,” President and CEO of ASTA, Zane Kerby, told  Travel and Tour World .

American has yet to reveal which agencies will be included in its “preferred agencies.”

Kerby called out American for “operating in bad faith” and was “looking to pad its bottom line at the expense of our valued clients and the millions of consumers who rely on their trusted travel advisor.”

Henry Harteveldt, president of the travel industry market research firm Atmosphere Research Group, told  Fodor’s Travel  the move is a “very inward-looking” perspective on American Airlines.

“It’s not a very consumer-friendly approach, and American is being a bit of a bully here,” Harteveldt explained — adding the move will put loyalty airline members in the crossfire of the company’s dispute with agencies.

The change comes as part of the airline's effort to minimize costs for agencies using older technology booking systems.

Harteveldt believes the move is also being monitored by the company’s competitors, who may adopt the change if it’s a success or whose sales teams may swoop in to poach any American flyers unpleased with the new method.

“As risky as American’s actions are, a lot of airlines are watching to see if it works out well for them, because if it does, I would not be surprised to see United and Delta copy it in certain ways,” he told the outlet.

While the airline is deadset on the change, Brett Snyder — author of the popular travel industry blog Crankyflier and CEO of the travel assistance service Cranky Concierge — said the move could cause “confusion” for the company’s flyers who already are trying to navigate their “frequent changes.”

American Airlines said they change is set to take effect May 1.

“The biggest impact will likely be on business travelers who may not have a choice of where to book depending upon company policy,” Snyder told the outlet.

“The fact that American still hasn’t told everyone who is or is not preferred adds more to the confusion.”

As the airline industry waits to hear who American will list as their “preferred agencies,” occasional travelers may also feel the weight of the change, Snyder explained.

He worries that some agencies may not disclose that to their customers during the booking process.

World Travel Agents Associations Alliance calls itself the global voice of the travel agency distribution channel.

Also, the move could affect cruise lines that book airfares as part of their packages, who may opt against using certain agencies not listed as one of American’s preferred agencies.

The changes will only affect travelers who collect AAdvantage Miles for their flights on American.

Flyers using corporate accounts with American will continue to earn miles for their flights no matter which booking channel they use unless they book a Basic Economy fare.

Travelers collecting miles from other Oneworld partners—the global airline alliance American is a member of with 13 other Airlines, such as British Airways, Qatar Airways, and Malaysia Airlines—will continue to earn miles for American Airlines flights regardless of booking channel.
