Reach Jwalamukhi Shaktipeeth Temple

Jwalamukhi Temple is a famous temple and very popular shaktipeeth near Chintpurni Mata.

Jwalaji or Jwalamukhi Devi is the only temple in the world, where no Pindi, Murti, etc is worshipped, Mother is worshipped in the form of Holy Flame

Jwalaji is the sidha peetha of Mother Dhumavati, one of the 10 Mahavidyas. 10 Mahavidyas hold supreme place in Tantra philosophy. Mother Dhumavati is very kind and compassionate. Anyone worshipping her with devotion and love gets the boon – I Dhumavati will never visit your family… means the Bhakta is free from poverty, child death and sufferings and remains happy in life.

Jwalaji (flame) or Jwala Mukhi (flame mouth) is  most ancient temple besides Vaishno Devi. It is mentioned in the Mahabharata and other scriptures.

There is a natural cave where eternal flames continue to burn. Some say there are seven or nine flames for the seven divine sisters or the nine Durgas. It is here that Sati’s tongue fell which can now be seen in the form of the flame.

Vist Gorakh Dibbi in Jwalamukhi

Guru Gorakhnath was so powerful in his tapasya that Mother appeared before him and asked for a boon. Guru Gorakhnath asked her to give him khichri. With Jwalaji’s power the cold water started boiling and Guruji asked mother to wait for him till he comes back. After this Guru left Jwalaji and never returned… so that Shakti remains there as per her promise.

Gorakh Tibbi (wrongly spoken as Dibbi) is the place where that cold water is boiling. A Nath sadhu will show the small pit where water is boiling and is cold. This is due to the fact that gas is bubbling out from the water and it looks like boiling. Then the Nath Sadhu will put a burning flame on the surface of water and with a booom, the blue flame comes out of water and goes upto roof

Great significance to tantriks and attracts thousands of believers and skeptics. The temple is Guarded and cared for by the fierce-looking followers of Gorakhnath — who is known to have been blessed with miraculous powers — the spot is no more than a small circle of about three feet in circumference.

Since time immemorial, people from all walks of life have been visiting this temple for a darshan of Maa Naina Devi (Mother Goddess). They come with hope -chanting Jai Mata Di, and pray to get their wishes fulfilled and Mata Naina Devi blesses everyone who comes to this temple.

Live Darshan

The ‘Darshan’ (Vision) of BhagwatiMaaDurga is in the form of bright mesmerizing light. It is believed that in ‘Sawan’ (Monsoon) MaaJwalaji and MaaChintpurni Ji visit Maa Shri Naina Devi Ji, the ‘Jyotayen’ (Cold Fire Flames) amidst the lightening are visualized by the ‘Pandits and many devotees, a splendid spiritually transporting sight. In the bank of the main temple, in front of the Mahakali temple, the first natural light is seen on the iron trident installed on the rear grill. After that, as soon as the devotees raise their hands with flowers in their hands, on their fingers, flowers and ‘Peepal leaves, and in the sanctum sanctorum, Goddess Durga is seen in the form of light. Herein there is no shortage of any kind so as to speak off. The food offered in the prayers of the Goddess has the divine taste. Devoted devotees experience ecstasy after receiving ‘Bhog.’ In spite of the narrow entrance of the Goddess’s Holy Cave, the devotees easily cross that path and get ‘Darshan’ of the Goddess established in the cave.

Brahma Pindi is established in the root of the tree. This ‘Pindi’ has been there since times immemorial and people move salvation after visiting it.

In this HawanKund, the Hawan is started by the chief priest of the temple in ‘Brahmmuhurta’ (Early Morning). After that, the Hawan is continued by all the devotees who have come to visit the shrine. The temple is located in Distt Bilaspur and it is one of the 51 Shakti peethas, where the eyes of Sati fell, after Lord Vishnu cut her body into 51 pieces to save the Earth from Shiva's wrath. A large crowd of pilgrims and devotees from different parts of the country visit this holy place to seek blessings of Maa Durga. The temple witnesses a huge crowd, especially during Shravan Ashtami and in the Navratras of Chaitra & Ashwin.

Naina Devi Temple in Bilaspur, HP

Naina Devi Temple is a highly revered Hindu shrine located in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh. This temple is dedicated to Naina Devi, a form of Goddess Shakti, and attracts thousands of devotees every year from different parts of the country. The temple is situated at an altitude of around 1100 meters and offers mesmerizing views of the surrounding hills and valleys. In this article, we will explore the rich history, architecture, and significance of the Naina Devi Temple.

Table of Contents

History of Naina Devi Temple

The history of Naina Devi Temple dates back to several centuries back.  According to legend, a cow herder named Naina was passing through the hills of Bilaspur when he noticed a stone that was emanating a divine glow. Intrigued, he dug up the stone and found a beautiful idol of Goddess Naina Devi. Another story says the same cow herder Naina while  grazing his cattle observed that a white cow was showering her milk on a stone. He saw the same thing for next several days. The shepherd boy told about the entire incident to the King of Bilaspur Raja Bir Chand. When the king also saw it happening, he built a temple on that spot and named the temple after Naina the boy.

Over the years, the temple gained popularity among the locals and devotees started flocking to the shrine to seek the blessings of Naina Devi. The temple underwent several renovations and additions over the centuries and stands today as a testament to the faith and devotion of millions of people.

Mythology and Significance of Naina Devi Temple

According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Sati’s eyes fell at this very spot where the Naina Devi Temple now stands. The legend says that Lord Shiva carrying the body of his wife, Sati, performed the Tandava dance. Naina Devi is believed to be one of the 51 shaktipeeths where limbs of Goddess Sati fell on earth. It is believed that worshipping at the temple fulfills the wishes of the devotees and bestows them with divine blessings. The temple is considered to be one of the 51 Shakti Peethas in India.

Sati and Shiva Story

Sati was the consort of Lord Shiva and daughter of King Daksha.  Once king Daksha performed a yagna where he invited all except Sati and Lord Shiva . Goddess Sati however went to the yajna (the fire worship and offerings) despite Lord Shiva telling her not go there.  At the yajna Daksha insulted Lord Shiva and Sati which saddened Sati so much that she killed herself.  When Lord Shiva came to know of this he severed the head of Daksha from his body.  This however did not calm him and picking up the body of Sati whom he loved so much, he started the dance of destruction called Tandav.  All the Gods approached Lord Vishnu for help as Shiva was hell bent on destroying the world.  To save the world Lord Vishnu threw his sudarshana chakra and cut the body of Sati into 51 pieces that fell on different parts of the Earth.  These 51 places are called Shaktipeeths and Naina Devi in Bilaspur is considered one of the places.  It is also believed Lord Shiva assumed the form of Bhairava and at every shaktipeeth there is a Shiva idol who is there to protect the devi.

Architecture of Naina Devi Temple

The architecture of the Naina Devi Temple is a blend of traditional and modern styles. The temple complex is spread over a large area and lush green hills and valleys from a height.  The temple is built in a pagoda style in the centre and has a beautiful white marble facade. The main entrance of the temple is adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures of various Hindu deities. The temple has several halls and rooms, each dedicated to different gods and goddesses.

Festivals Celebrated at Naina Devi Temple

Naina Devi Temple is known for its grand celebrations of several Hindu festivals. The temple hosts a 9-day Navratri festival every year, during which thousands of devotees visit the shrine and offer prayers to the goddess. The temple also celebrates the festivals of Diwali, Holi, and Janmashtami with great enthusiasm. To go to the temple, while a lot of people prefer to trek till the top of the hill on which the temple is located, chanting Jai Mata Di, many take Palkis for a comfortable ride.  Facilities for rest and refreshments are available on the way, where tourists can relax for some time and have refreshments.

Naina Devi Cave Bilaspur

Among the Hindus, the Shakti peethas of Devi Sati are very significant religious sites. Generally, these are considered the centre of spirituality and various forms of Hindu rituals. One of these Shakti peethas is the famous Naina Devi Temple. Naina Devi is the main deity of the temple and believed as the form of Devi Sati. This popular goddess temple is located in the Nainital town of Uttarakhand. If you are a spiritual person, then you might have a deep desire to visit the temple. To know the complete way to visit, keep reading the blog till the end.

Naina Devi Mandir Overview:

Naina Devi Mandir is a significant Hindu religious site dedicated to Goddess Naina. It’s one of the most visited sites in Nainital. Almost all of the tourists, who come here, begin their vacation after getting Darshana of the Naina Devi. According to Hindu beliefs, it’s one of the 51 Devi  Shakti Peethas  and it’s the main reason behind the faith of pilgrims in this temple.

Temple Architecture:

The Naina Devi temple is designed in very attractive and unique architecture. The temple complex is beside the Naini Lake and spread into a moderate area. The roofs of the temple appear sharp and resemble the peak. It doesn’t look like an ordinary North Indian temple. The red and white colours are dominant in the exterior walls, as a result, it reflects the combo vibrations of energy and peace. According to colour psychology, red colour is known for energy and white for peace. From the temple balcony, you can enjoy the mesmerising lake view. Often the tourists love to click pictures from this balcony area.

Why is Naina Devi Mandir famous:

Now, let’s know about the reason behind the popularity of Naina Devi Mandir. Mainly, we are going to find that, why a great number of people visit this temple. The most important reason is the wonderful geographical location of this site. If we talk about the altitude then the temple is located at approximately 2085 m. Because of is located at a high altitude, the surrounding atmosphere is cold and foggy. In simple words, the weather around the temple is pretty pleasant and suitable to enjoy. That’s one of the reasons, why pilgrims prefer to come here in masses.

Secondly, as we have mentioned Naina Devi Temple is resided in the Nainital town. Nainital is one of the most preferred hill stations in India. Because of that, tourists come to Nainital for a family vacation, honeymoon, college tour, or solo trip, firstly they come to Naina Devi Mandir and seek the blessings of the goddess. In a nutshell, Naina Devi Mandir is important because of being Shakti peethas. But it receives large numbers of pilgrims because of being located in the famous hill station.

Naina Devi Temple Story:

The scriptures unveil that when Lord Shiva was roaming here and there with the body of her beloved wife Devi Sati, in his arms. He was feeling extremely emotionally weak and was unable to bear the loss of her wife. At that time, the Lord Vishnu decided to handle the situation and left his Sudarshana Chakra to cut the body of Devi Sati. Following this, the organs of Sati Maa had fallen in 51 different places. Each of these 51 places is considered an abode of sacredness and spirituality. They say that one of the eyes of Devi Sati has fallen in this location and that’s where the Naina Devi Temple is located. For your better understanding, you should know that the word Naina refers to the eye.

Location of Naina Devi Temple

This temple is located on the north side of Naini Lake. Geographically, the temple is amid hills that are mostly covered with dense fog and beside the Nainital Lake, which is the centre of attraction in the town. There are two ways to reach the Naina Devi temple. Firstly, you can walk through the mall road and reach the temple’s doorstep. According to Hindu mythology, the temple is built on the spot where Goddess Sati's eyes fell when Lord Vishnu cut her body into 51 different parts.

Inside the Naina Devi Temple, you will find the two eyes on the roof, depicting Goddess Naina Devi, placed in the centre; with the statues of Goddess Kali and Lord Ganesha surrounding it. The city of Nainital got its name from the Naina Devi Temple. As you climb the hill to reach the temple, various shops selling prasad and other essential puja items will greet you on the way.
